We search the American Association of Variable Star Observers (AAVSO) archives of the two best studied dwarf novae in an attempt to find light curves for long outbursts that are extremely well-characterized. The systems are U Gem and SS Cyg. Our goal is to search for embedded precursors such as those that have been found recently in the high fidelity Kepler data for superoutbursts of some members of the SU UMa subclass of dwarf novae. For the vast majority of AAVSO data, the combination of low data cadence and large errors associated with individual measurements precludes one from making any strong statement about the shape of the long outbursts. However, for a small number of outbursts, extensive long term monitoring with digital photometry yields high fidelity light curves. We report the discovery of embedded precursors in two of three candidate long outbursts. This is the first time that such embedded precursors have been found in dwarf novae above the period gap, and reinforces van Paradijs' finding that long outbursts in dwarf novae above the period gap and superoutbursts in systems below the period gap constitute a unified class. The thermal-tidal instability to account for superoutbursts in the SU UMa stars predicts embedded precursors only for short orbital period dwarf novae, therefore the presence of embedded precursors in long orbital period systems - U Gem and SS Cyg - argues for a more general mechanism to explain long outbursts.
The theory of General Relativity deals with very accurate measurements that show significant divergences from Newtonian predictions only with speeds near to the velocity of light. An introduction for educational purposes, based on naked eye photometry, deals with the radiation near collapsing star's shells like novae and supernovae. The theme of accuracy is drafted from entry level observations to the precision of professional data, often of public domain on the web. Thousand observations of variable stars, included the type 1a SN2014J, the Nova Del 2013 and the Nova Cen 2013, sent to the AAVS…
I report on a large-scale search for the orbital periods (P) of most known nova systems, by looking for significant, coherent, and stable optical photometric modulation in two or more independent light curves taken mostly from the large surveys of TESS, Kepler, AAVSO, SMARTS, OGLE, ASAS, and ZTF. I have discovered 31 new orbital periods. Further, I have measured new periods for 18 novae with evolved companions, to 30 per cent accuracy, as based on their spectral energy distribution. Also, I have confirmed, improved, and rejected prior claims for P in 46 novae. (As part of this effort, I recogn…
Kepler high cadence data are used to measure the orbital periods and to determine the orbital waveforms of five dwarf novae. A significant improvement of the period of V1504 Cyg is achieved, while for the other systems periods are derived which are compatible with previous determinations. The orbital waveforms of the short period systems V1504 Cyg, V344 Lyr and V516 Lyr are very nearly sinusoidal, while the longer period dwarf nova V447 Lyr appears almost to be a twin of U Gem. The unusual system KIC 9202990 exhibits distinct variations of its waveform as a function of brightness during its ou…
I report on the discovery of the orbital periods of three recurrent novae in our galaxy. V745 Sco has an orbital period of 510+-20 days with ellipsoidal modulations, based on SMARTS photometry from 2004-2008. V3890 Sgr has an orbital period of 519.7+-0.3 days with ellipsoidal modulations and a shallow eclipse, based primarily on SMARTS and AAVSO photometry from 1995-2008, but also extending back to 1899 with archival plates. In addition, a sinusoidal modulation of amplitude 0.2 mag and period 103.8+-0.4 days is seen mainly in the red, with this attributed to ordinary pulsations in the giant co…
The results of time-resolved observations of SU UMa and U Gem obtained over two-years are presented. Both stars are prototypes of different classes of dwarf novae. We studied brightness variations on different time scales: orbital, QPO and flickering. The multicolor BVRI photometry allows to distinguisch the geometrical and physical sources of these variations.
Changes in the supercycle lengths of some SU UMa-type dwarf novae have been detected by other studies, and indicate that the mass transfer rates noticeably decrease over time. We investigated the supercycle lengths of three SU UMa-type dwarf novae: AR Pic, QW Ser and V521 Peg, to determine if they have detectable changes in their supercycles. We present the results of optical spectroscopic and photometric observations of these sources. Our observations were conducted in 2016 and 2017 at the Boyden Observatory and the Sutherland station of the South African Astronomical Observatory. The quiesce…
We measure the duty cycles for an existing sample of well observed, nearby dwarf novae using data from AAVSO, and present a quantitative empirical relation between the duty cycle of dwarf novae outbursts and the X-ray luminosity of the system in quiescence. We have found that $\log DC=0.63(\pm0.21)\times(\log L_{X}({\rm erg\,s^{-1}})-31.3)-0.95(\pm0.1)$, where DC stands for duty cycle. We note that there is intrinsic scatter in this relation greater than what is expected from purely statistical errors. Using the dwarf nova X-ray luminosity functions from \citet{Pretorius12} and \citet{Byckling…
BZ UMa is a cataclysmic variable star whose specific classification has eluded researchers since its discovery in 1968. It has outburst and spectral properties consistent with both U Gem class dwarf novae and intermediate polars. We present new photometric and polarimetric measurements of recent outbursts, including the first detected superoutburst of the system. Statistical analysis of these and archival data from outbursts over the past 40 years present a case for BZ UMa as a non-magnetic, U Gem class, SU-UMa subclass dwarf novae.
Near-IR data of Classical Novae contain useful information about the ejected gas mass and the thermal emission by dust formed during eruption, and provide independent methods to classify the objects according to the colour of their progenitors, and the fading rate and features seen after eruption. The VISTA Variables in the Via Lactea survey (VVV) is a near-IR ESO Public Survey mapping the MW bulge and southern plane. Data taken during 2010-2011 covered the entire area in the JHKs bands plus some epochs in Ks-band of the ongoing VVV variability campaign. We used the novae list provided by VSX/…
I report new orbital periods (P) for 13 classical novae, based on light curves from TESS, AAVSO, and other public archives. These new nova periods now constitute nearly one-seventh of all known nova periods. Five of my systems have P>1 day, which doubles the number of such systems that must have evolved companion stars. (This is simply because ground-based time series have neither the coverage nor the stability required to discover these small-amplitude long periods.) V1016 Sgr has a rare P below the period gap, and suddenly becomes useful for current debates on evolution of novae. Five of the…
We report our photometric and spectroscopic follow-up observations of the superoutbursts of three dwarf novae (GWAC\,180415A, GWAC\,181017A and GWAC\,181211A) identified independently by the Ground Wide-angle Cameras system, one of the ground-based instruments of the China-France SVOM mission. Based on a combination of our photometry and that taken from the AAVSO, our period analysis of the superhumps enables us to determine the mass ratios to be 0.0967-0.1163, 0.1879-0.1883 and 0.0981-0.1173 for GWAC\,180415A, GWAC\,181017A and GWAC\,181211A, respectively. GWAC\,180415A can be firmly identifi…
We present an analysis of the FUSE spectra of eight high-declination dwarf novae obtained from a Cycle 7 FUSE survey. These DN systems have not been previously studied in the UV and little is known about their white dwarfs (WDs) or accretion disks. We carry out the spectral analysis of the FUSE data using synthetic spectra generated with the codes TLUSTY and SYNSPEC. For two faint objects (AQ Men, V433 Ara) we can only assess a lower limit for the WD temperature or mass accretion rate. NSV 10934 was caught in a quiescent state and its spectrum is consistent with a low mass accretion rate disk.…
V476 Cyg (Nova Cyg 1920) is a bright, fast nova reaching a photographic magnitude of 2.0. Using the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) public database, I found that this nova is currently a dwarf nova with a cycle length of ~24 d. Compared to other classical novae currently in dwarf nova-type states, outbursts of V476 Cyg are rapidly rising and short with durations of a few days. Based on the AAVSO observations, this nova was probably already in the dwarf nova-type phase in 2016, 96 years after the nova eruption. I found a possible orbital period of 0.1018002(6) d using the ZTF data, which would …
We report the discovery of forty erupting cataclysmic variable stars in the OGLE-III Galactic disk fields: seventeen objects of U Gem type, four of Z Cam type, and nineteen stars showing outbursts and superoutbursts typical for SU UMa type dwarf novae. In the case of five stars we were able to estimate their supercycle lengths. The obtained lengths are in the range 20-90 d, generally between the typical SU UMa type variables and a few objects classified as the ER UMa type variables. Since there is no significant difference between the two types but a higher mass-transfer rate resulting in more…
We present results of our analysis of up to 15 years of photometric data from eight AM CVn systems with orbital periods between 22.5 and 26.8 min. Our data has been collected from the GOTO, ZTF, Pan-STARRS, ASAS-SN and Catalina all-sky surveys and amateur observations collated by the AAVSO. We find evidence that these interacting ultra-compact binaries show a similar diversity of long term optical properties as the hydrogen accreting dwarf novae. We found that AM CVn systems in the previously identified accretion disc instability region are not a homogenous group. Various members of the analys…
A periodogram analysis of 47 stars noted in GCVS as RV-type stars was carried out. The research methods applied here to RV-type stars have previously been applied to long-period variables Mira-type stars and semi-variables. Periodograms are previously classified by their shape, or rather the presence or absence of certain structures: two peaks in a 2:1 ratio, the presence of satellites at these peaks indicating the result of beats. Table 1 shows the classification groups. Examples of periodograms of stars of all three groups are shown. The study identified stars that most likely do not belong …
We present X-ray observations of novae V2491 Cyg and KT Eri about 9 years post-outburst, of the dwarf nova and post-nova candidate EY Cyg, and of a VY Scl variable. The first three objects were observed with XMM-Newton, KT Eri also with the Chandra ACIS-S camera, V794 Aql with the Chandra ACIS-S camera and High Energy Transmission Gratings. The two recent novae, similar in outburst amplitude and light curve, appear very different at quiescence. Assuming half of the gravitational energy is irradiated in X-rays, V2491 Cyg is accreting at $\dot{m}=1.4\times10^{-9}-10^{-8}M_\odot/yr$, while for KT…
We present the results of an analysis of data covering 1.5 years of the dwarf nova V447 Lyr. We detect eclipses of the accretion disk by the mass donating secondary star every 3.74 hrs which is the binary orbital period. V447 Lyr is therefore the first dwarf nova in the Kepler field to show eclipses. We also detect five long outbursts and six short outbursts showing V447 Lyr is a U Gem type dwarf nova. We show that the orbital phase of the mid-eclipse occurs earlier during outbursts compared to quiescence and that the width of the eclipse is greater during outburst. This suggests that the brig…
Here we compute detailed model spectra of recently published optically thick one-dimensional radial baundary layer (BL) models in cataclysmic variables and compare them with observed soft X-ray/extreme ultraviolet (EUV) spectra of dwarf novae in outburst. Every considered BL model is divided into a number of rings, and for each ring, a structure model along the vertical direction is computed using the stellar-atmosphere method. The ring spectra are then combined into a BL spectrum taking Doppler broadening and limb darkening into account. Two sets of model BL spectra are computed, the first of…
The observations of the two-periodic magnetic cataclysmic system EX Hya have been carried out, using the telescopes RC16 and TOA-150 of the Tzec Maun observatory. 6 nights of observations were obtained in 2010-2011 (alternatively changing filters VR). Also the databases of WASP, ASAS and AAVSO have been analyzed. Processing time series was carried out using the program MCV. We analyzed changes in the rotation period of the white dwarf, and based on our own and previously published moments of maximum. The ephemeris was determined for the maxima of the radiation flux associated with the rotation…
One very important object for understanding the nature of red novae is V1309 Sco. Its pre-outburst observations showed that, before its red-nova eruption in 2008, it was a contact binary quickly evolving to the merger of the components. It thus provided us with a direct evidence that the red novae result from stellar mergers. We analyse the spectral energy distribution (SED) of the object and its evolution with time. From various optical and infrared surveys and observing programmes carried out with OGLE, HST, VVV, Gemini South, WISE, Spitzer, and Herschel we constructed observed SED in 2010 a…
There are 15 cataclysmic variables (CVs) observed in the first two campaigns of the K2 mission. In this paper, the eight CVs showing distinct features are analyzed in detail. Among these eight, modulations during quiescence are evident at the known orbital periods in the SU UMa stars QZ Vir and RZ Leo, and at our newly determined orbital periods of 1RXS J0632+2536 and WD 1144+011. The periodogram analysis for the quiescent light curve of QZ Vir reveals multi-period modulations and the coexistence of orbital and superhump periods. The phased orbital light curves for the other 3 CVs in quiescenc…
RU Peg is a dwarf nova (DN) of the U Gem type. Our analysis of its long-term optical activity uses the data from the AAVSO database. It concentrates on investigating the properties of the individual outbursts and the time evolution of the ensemble of these events. No significant irradiation of the disc by the white dwarf was detected. In the interpretation, a variable steepness of the rising branches of the individual outbursts shows that the start of outbursts of RU Peg can occur at various distances from the disc centre without remarkable changes of the outburst recurrence time $T_{\rm C}$. …
We present an analysis of X-ray and UV data obtained with the XMM-Newton Observatory of the long period dwarf nova RU Peg. RU Peg contains a massive white dwarf, possibly the hottest white dwarf in a dwarf nova, it has a low inclination, thus optimally exposing its X-ray emitting boundary layer, and has an excellent trigonometric parallax distance. We modeled the X-ray data using XSPEC assuming a multi-temperature plasma emission model built from the MEKAL code. We obtained a maximum temperature of 31.7 keV, based on the EPIC MOS1, 2 and pn data, indicating that RU Peg has an X-ray spectrum ha…
We present a multi-color, high-cadence photometric study of a distant dwarf nova KSP-OT-201611a discovered by the Korea Microlensing Telescope Network Supernova Program. From October 2016 to May 2017, two outbursts, which comprises a super/long outburst followed by a normal/short outburst separated by $\sim$91 days, were detected in the $BVI$ bands. The shapes and amplitudes of the outbursts reveal the nature of KSP-OT-201611a to be an SU UMa- or U Gem-type dwarf nova. Color variations of periodic humps in the super/long outburst possibly indicate that KSP-OT-201611a is an SU UMa-type dwarf no…
