Z CMa is a complex pre-main sequence binary with a current separation of 100 mas, known to consist of an FU Orionis star (SE component) and an embedded Herbig Be star (NW component). Immediately when the late-2008 outburst of Z CMa was announced to the community, we initiated a high angular resolution imaging campaign with VLT/NaCo, Keck/NIRC2, VLT/SINFONI, and Keck/OSIRIS which aimed at characterizing the outburst of both components of the system in the near-infrared. We confirm that the NW star dominates the system flux in the 1.1-3.8 microns range and is responsible for the photometric outburst. We extract the first medium-resolution (R=2000-4000) near-infrared (1.1-2.4 microns) spectra of the individual components during and after the outburst. The SE component has a spectrum typical of FU Orionis objects. The NW component spectrum is characteristic of embedded outbursting protostars and EX Or objects. It displays numerous emission lines during the outburst whose intensity correlates with the system activity. In particular, we find a correlation between the Brackett gamma equivalent width and the system brightness. The bluing of the continuum of the NW component along with the absolute flux and color-variation of the system during the outburst suggests that the outburst was caused by a complex interplay between a variation of the extinction in the line of sight of the NW component on one hand, and the emission of shocked regions close to the NW component on the other. We confirm the recently reported wiggling of the SE component jet from [Fe II] line emission. We find a point-like structure associated with a peak emission at 2.098 microns coincidental with the clump or arm seen in broadband polarization differential imaging as well as additional diffuse emission along a PA=214 degrees. The origin of these two structures is unclear and deserves further investigation.
Z CMa is a binary system which consists of two young stars: A Herbig AeBe component "Z CMa NW" embedded in a dust cocoon and a less massive component "Z CMa SE", which is classified as a FU Orionis type star. Recently, the system showed the largest outburst reported during the almost 90 years of available observations. During the recent outburst we detect that the Z CMa system is polarized by 2.6% in the continuum and emission line spectrum, with a position angle still perpendicular to the jet. From the high level of polarization we conclude that the outburst is associated with the dust embedd…
Z CMa is a young binary system consisting of an Herbig primary and a FU Ori companion. Both components seem to be surrounded by active accretion disks and a jet was associated to the Herbig B0. In Nov. 2008, K. Grankin discovered that Z CMa was exhibiting an outburst with an amplitude larger than any photometric variations recorded in the last 25 years. To study the innermost regions in which the outburst occurs and understand its origin, we have observed both binary components with AMBER/VLTI across the Brγ emission line in Dec. 2009 in medium and high spectral resolution modes. Our observati…
The Z CMa binary is understood to undergo both FU Orionis (FUOR) and EX Orionis (EXOR) type outbursts. While the SE component has been spectro- scopically identified as an FUOR, the NW component, a Herbig Be star, is the source of the EXOR outbursts. The system has been identified as the source of a large outflow, however, previous studies have failed to identify the driver. Here we present adaptive optics (AO) assisted [FeII] spectro-images which reveal for the first time the presence of two jets. Observations made using OSIRIS at the Keck Observatory show the Herbig Be star to be the source …
Accretion shocks have been recognized as important X-ray emission mechanism for pre-main sequence stars. Yet the X-ray properties of FUor outbursts, events that are caused by violent accretion, have been given little attention. We have observed the FUor object Z CMa during optical outburst and quiescence with Chandra. No significant changes in X-ray brightness and spectral shape are found, suggesting that the X-ray emission is of coronal nature. Due to the binary nature of Z CMa the origin of the X-ray source is ambiguous. However, the moderate hydrogen column density derived from our data mak…
Context. Z\,CMa is a binary composed of an embedded Herbig Be and an FU Ori class star separated by $\sim100$ au. Observational evidence indicate a complex environment in which each star has a circumstellar disk and drives a jet, and the whole system is embedded in a large dusty envelope. Aims. We aim to probe the circumbinary environment of Z\,CMa in the inner 400 au in scattered light. Methods. We use high contrast imaging polarimetry with VLT/NaCo at $H$ and $K_s$ bands. Results. The central binary is resolved in both bands. The polarized images show three bright and complex structures: a c…
Z CMa is a complex binary system, composed of a Herbig Be and an FU Ori star. The Herbig star is surrounded by a dust cocoon of variable geometry, and the whole system is surrounded by an infalling envelope. Previous spectropolarimetric observations have reported a preferred orientation of the polarization angle, perpendicular to the direction of a large, parsec-sized jet associated with the Herbig star. The variability in the amount of polarized light has been associated to changes in the geometry of the dust cocoon that surrounds the Herbig star. We aim to constrain the properties of Z CMa b…
We analyze the V-band photometry data of the Be star omega CMa, observed during the last four decades. The data is fitted by hydrodynamic models based on the viscous decretion disk (VDD) theory, in which a disk around a fast-spinning Be star is formed by material ejected by the central star and driven to progressively wider orbits by means of viscous torques. For the first time, we apply the model for both the disk build up and the dissipation phases. Our simulations offer a good description of the photometric variability in both phases, which suggests that the VDD model adequately describes t…
This paper presents a milliarcsecond-scale comparison of the polarised component-level v=1 J=1-0, v=2 J=1-0 and v=1 J=2-1 SiO maser emission toward the supergiant star VY CMa. These observations used the VLBA at λ=7mm and λ=3mm over two epochs. The goal is to use the relative characteristics and spatial distribution of the transitions in individual resolved maser components to provide observational constraints on SiO maser excitation and pumping models. We find that many v=1 J=1-0 and v=2 J=1-0 features overlap in the second observing epoch, at comparable sensitivity. The v=2 J=1-0 emission is…
An interferometric mid-infrared study of the eruptive star binary Z CMa with MATISSE/VLTI. I. Imaging the protoplanetary disks during the 2023 outburst
Crucial information on the mass accretion-ejection in young stars can be obtained from high spatial resolution images of jets in sources with recurrent accretion outbursts. Using the SPHERE/ZIMPOL instrument, we observed the young binary Z CMa that is composed of a Herbig Be star and a FUor object, both driving a jet. We analyse the structure of the two jets in relation with previous accretion events observed in this target. We obtained optical images in the Halpha and OI 6300A lines at the unprecedented angular resolution of ~0.03 arcsec, on which we have performed both continuum subtraction …
The visual magnitude profile of the symbiotic system Z And during the 1984-1986 activity period appears double peaked and the flux intensity is low compared to outbursts in other epochs. The detailed modeling of the observed spectra, accounting for the shells ejected by the red giant star, shows that the outburst is intrinsically single but distorted by the collision at different phases of the white dwarf wind with two close shells.
Close encounters between young stellar objects in star forming clusters are expected to dramatically perturb circumstellar disks. Such events are witnessed in numerical simulations of star formation, but few direct observations of ongoing encounters have been made. Here we report sub-0".1 resolution Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) and Jansky Very Large Array (JVLA) observations towards the million year old binary protostar Z CMa in dust continuum and molecular line emission. A point source ~4700 au from the binary has been discovered at both millimeter and centimeter wavelengths. It is l…
We report the discovery of a massive protostar M17~MIR embedded in a hot molecular core in M17. The multiwavelength data obtained during 1993--2019 show significant mid-IR (MIR) variations, which can be split into three stages: the decreasing phase during 1993.03--mid-2004, the quiescent phase from mid-2004 to mid-2010, and the rebrightening phase from mid-2010 until now. The variation of the 22\,GHz H$_2$O maser emission, together with the MIR variation, indicates an enhanced disk accretion rate onto M17~MIR during the decreasing and rebrightening phases. Radiative transfer modeling of the sp…
Context: It is hypothesized that low-mass young stellar objects undergo eruptive phases during their early evolution. The outburst of V1647 Ori between 2003 and 2006 offered a rare opportunity to investigate such an accretion event. Aims: By means of our interferometry observing campaign during this outburst, supplemented by other observations, we investigate the temporal evolution of the inner circumstellar structure of V1647 Ori We also study the role of the changing extinction in the brightening of the object and separate it from the accretional brightening. Methods: We observed V1647 Ori w…
We present an analysis of multi-epoch low-resolution spectrophotometry, complemented by the light curves provided by massive photometric surveys spanning over 100 years, of the symbiotic binary LMC S63. We showed that it is an eclipsing binary with the orbital period of 1050d. We also found evidence of outbursts in history of the white dwarf. If it was a Z-And type outburst, as is most likely, it would be a second such outburst recorded in the Magellanic Cloud symbiotic system. We confirmed that the red giant is enhanced in carbon, and estimated C/O~1.2 by fitting a model atmosphere to the SAL…
There is an increasing body of evidence that suggests that Be disks are well described by the Viscous Decretion Disk (VDD) model according to which the formation and structure of the disk depend on the kinematic viscosity of the gas. However, most observational tests of the VDD to-date were done for systems that do not display strong temporal variability. From this analysis we (1) obtain a realistic physical model of the circumstellar environment; (2) measure the viscosity parameter of the gas, both during the formation and dissipation phases of the disk; (3) obtain a reliable estimate of the …
Nova V5856 Sagittarii is unique for having remained more than nine magnitudes above its pre-outburst brightness for more than six years. Extensive visible and IR spectra from the time of outburst to the present epoch reveal separate emitting regions with distinct spectral characteristics. Permitted emission lines have both broad and narrow components, whereas the forbidden line profiles are almost entirely broad. The permitted line components frequently display P Cygni profiles indicating high optical depth, whereas the broad components do not show detectable absorption. The densities and velo…
The pulse shapes detected during multiple outbursts of SAX J1808 are analyzed in order to constrain the neutron star's mass and radius. We use a hot-spot model with a small scattered-light component to jointly fit data from two different epochs, under the restriction that the star's mass and radius and the binary's inclination do not change from epoch to epoch. All other parameters describing the spot location, emissivity, and relative fractions of blackbody to Comptonized radiation are allowed to vary with time. The joint fit of data from the 1998 "slow decay" and the 2002 "end of outburst ma…
We present near-IR imaging polarimetry of five classical FU Ori-type objects (FU Ori, V1057 Cyg, V1515 Cyg, V1735 Cyg, Z CMa) with a $\sim$0\farcs1 resolution observed using HiCIAO+AO188 at Subaru Telescope. We observed scattered light associated with circumstellar dust around four of them (i.e., all but V1515 Cyg). Their polarized intensity distribution shows a variety of morphologies with arms, tails or streams, spikes and fragmented distributions, many of which were reported in our previous paper. The morphologies of these reflection nebulae significantly differ from many other normal young…
We present the first four years of BVRI photometry from an on-going survey to annually monitor the photometric behavior of evolved luminous stars in M31 and M33. Photometry was measured for 199 stars at multiple epochs, including 9 classic Luminous Blue Variables (LBVs), 22 LBV candidates, 10 post-RGB A/F type hypergiants, and 18 B[e] supergiants. At all epochs the brightness is measured in V and at least one other band to a precision of 0.04 -- 0.10 magnitudes down to a limiting magnitude of 19.0 -- 19.5. Thirty three (33) stars in our survey exhibit significant variability, including at leas…
In this PhD Thesis we study the occurrence of powerful stellar outbursts in the late phases of evolution of stars like the Sun. This is one of the most controversial topics in the field, as the extraordinary variety of shapes revealed by observations are not expected to be the result of the evolution of stars that are basically spherical all over their lives. The stellar ejecta that we study occur and develop on time-scales of years, even months. This allows us to study their evolution in real-time. A very rare opportunity in Astrophysics! To this aim, we have gathered over the years a unique …
We study the spectroscopic and ionized structural evolution of T Pyx during its 2011 outburst, and also study the variation in degree of polarization during its early phase. Optical spectroscopic data of this system obtained from day 1.28--2415.62 since discovery, and optical, broadband imaging polarimetric observations obtained from day 1.36--29.33 during the early phases of the outburst are used in the study. The physical conditions and the geometry of the ionized structure of the nova ejecta has been modelled for a few epochs using the photo-ionization code, CLOUDY in 1D and pyCloudy in 3D.…
Optical spectra of the 2006 outburst of RS Ophiuchi beginning one day after discovery to over a year after the outburst are presented here. The spectral evolution is found to be similar to that in previous outbursts. The early phase spectra are dominated by hydrogen and helium (I & II) lines. Coronal and nebular lines appear in the later phases. Emission line widths are found to narrow with time, which is interpreted as a shock expanding into the red giant wind. Using the photoionisation code CLOUDY, spectra at nine epochs spanning 14 months after the outburst peak, thus covering a broad range…

本文报告了 V7995 Sgr 在 2024 年底达到峰值亮度的一次 FU Orionis 型爆发,基于多波段光变曲线和光谱观测,确认其由吸积盘驱动并伴有强风。
We report the results of the Jansky Very Large Array (JVLA) observation of five massive protostars at 6 and 22.2 GHz. The aim of the study was to compare their current fluxes and positions with previous observations to search for evidence of variability. Most of the observed sources present the morphologies of a thermal core, hosting the protostar and exhibiting no proper motion, and associated non-thermal radio lobes that are characterised by proper motions and located away from the thermal core. Some of the protostars drive jets whose lobes have dissimilar displacement vectors, implying prec…
Simultaneous time monitoring observations of H$_{2}$O and SiO maser lines were performed toward the D-type symbiotic binary system V407 Cyg with the Korean VLBI Network single dish radio telescope. These monitoring observations were carried out from March 2, 2010 (optical phase $ϕ$ = 0.0), 8 days before the nova outburst on March 10, 2010 to June 5, 2014 ($ϕ$ = 2.13). Eight days before the nova outburst, we detected the SiO $v$ = 1, 2, $J$ = 1--0 maser lines which exhibited values of 0.51 K ($\sim$ 6.70 Jy) and 0.71 K ($\sim$ 9.30 Jy), respectively, while after the outburst we could not detect…

We report monitoring observations of the T Tauri star EX Lupi during its outburst in 2008 in the CO fundamental band at 4.6-5.0 um. The observations were carried out at the VLT and the Subaru Telescope at six epochs from April to August 2008, covering the plateau of the outburst and the fading phase to a quiescent state. The line flux of CO emission declines with the visual brightness of the star and the continuum flux at 5 um, but composed of two subcomponents that decay with different rates. The narrow line emission (50 km s-1 in FWHM) is near the systemic velocity of EX Lupi. These emission…
To better understand the LBV phenomenon, we analyze multi-epoch and multi-wavelength spectra and photometry of R71. Pre-outburst spectra are analyzed with the radiative transfer code CMFGEN to determine the star's fundamental stellar parameters. During quiescence, R71 has an effective temperature of $T_\mathrm{eff} = 15\,500~K$ and a luminosity of log$(L_*/L_{\odot})$ = 5.78 and is thus a classical LBV, but at the lower luminosity end of this group. We determine its mass-loss rate to $4.0 \times 10^{-6}~M_{\odot}~$yr$^{-1}$. We present R71's spectral energy distribution from the near-ultraviol…
We present follow-up photometric and spectroscopic observations, and subsequent analysis of Gaia20eae. This source triggered photometric alerts during 2020 after showing a $\sim$3 mag increase in its brightness. Its Gaia Alert light curve showed the shape of a typical eruptive young star. We carried out observations to confirm Gaia20eae as an eruptive young star and classify it. Its pre-outburst spectral energy distribution shows that Gaia20eae is a moderately embedded Class II object with $L_\mathrm{bol} = 7.22$ L$_\odot$. The color-color and color-magnitude diagrams indicate that the evoluti…
We report K2 observations of the eclipsing cataclysmic variable V729 Sgr which covered nearly 80 days in duration. We find five short outbursts and two long outbursts, one of which shows a clear plateau phase in the rise to maximum brightness. The mean time between successive short outbursts is ~10 d while the time between the two long outbursts is ~38 d. The frequency of these outbursts are unprecedented for a CV above the orbital period gap. We find evidence that the mid-point of the eclipse occurs systematically earlier in outburst than in quiescence. During five of the six quiescent epochs…
We present Spitzer Space Telescope mid-infrared IRS spectra, supplemented by ground-based optical observations, of the classical novae V1974 Cyg, V382 Vel, and V1494 Aql more than 11, 8, and 4 years after outburst respectively. The spectra are dominated by forbidden emission from neon and oxygen, though in some cases, there are weak signatures of magnesium, sulfur, and argon. We investigate the geometry and distribution of the late time ejecta by examination of the emission line profiles. Using nebular analysis in the low density regime, we estimate lower limits on the abundances in these nova…
We present an analysis of elemental abundances of ejecta of the recurrent nova RS Oph using published optical and near-infrared spectra during the 2006 outburst. We use the CLOUDY photoionization code to generate synthetic spectra by varying several parameters, the model generated spectra are then matched with the observed emission line spectra obtained at two epochs. We obtain the best fit model parameters through the $χ^{2}$ minimization technique. Our model results fit well with observed optical and near-infrared spectra. The best-fit model parameters are compatible with a hot white dwarf s…
We report Hubble Space Telescope imaging, obtained 155 and 449 days after the 2006 outburst of the recurrent nova RS Ophiuchi, together with ground-based spectroscopic observations, obtained from the Observatorio Astronómico Nacional en San Pedro Mártir, Baja California, México and at the Observatorio Astrofísico Guillermo Haro, at Cananea, Sonora, México. The observations at the first epoch were used as inputs to model the geometry and kinematic structure of the evolving RS Oph nebular remnant. We find that the modeled remnant comprises two distinct co-aligned bipolar components; a low-veloci…
We present optical and infrared spectroscopy of V1309 Sco, an object that erupted in 2008 in a stellar-merger event. During the outburst, V1309 Sco displayed characteristics typical of red transients, a class of objects similar to V838 Mon. Our observations were obtained in 2009 and 2012, i.e. months and years after the eruption of V1309 Sco, and illustrate severe changes in the remnant, mainly in its circumstellar surroundings. In addition to atomic gas observed in earlier epochs, we identified molecular bands of TiO, VO, H$_2$O, ScO, AlO, and CrO. The infrared bands of CrO we analyse are the…
HBC 722 (V2493 Cyg) is a young eruptive star in outburst since 2010. It is an FU Orionis-type object with an atypically low outburst luminosity. Because it was well characterized in the pre-outburst phase, HBC 722 is one of the few FUors where we can learn about the physical changes and processes associated with the eruption. We monitored the source in the BVRIJHKs bands from the ground, and at 3.6 and 4.5 $μ$m from space with the Spitzer Space Telescope. We analyzed the light curves and the spectral energy distribution by fitting a series of steady accretion disk models at many epochs. We als…
Individual outbursting young stars are important laboratories for studying the physics of episodic accretion and the extent to which this phenomenon can explain the luminosity distribution of protostars. We present new and archival data for V2775 Ori (HOPS 223), a protostar in the L 1641 region of the Orion molecular clouds that was discovered by Caratti o Garatti et al. (2011) to have recently undergone an order-of-magnitude increase in luminosity. Our near-infrared spectra of the source have strong blueshifted He I 10830 absorption, strong H2O and CO absorption, and no H I emission, all typi…
We explore the accretion mechanisms in EX Lupi, prototype of EXor variables, during its quiescence and outburst phases. We analyse high-resolution optical spectra taken before, during, and after its 2008 outburst. In quiescence and outburst, the star presents many permitted emission lines, including typical CTTS lines and numerous neutral and ionized metallic lines. During the outburst, the number of emission lines increases to over a thousand, with narrow plus broad component structure (NC+BC). The BC profile is highly variable on short timescales (24-72h). An active chromosphere can explain …
We present low-resolution near-IR 0.8-2.5 um spectra of SN2009ip, taken immediately before, during, and just after its rapid brightening in late Sep/Oct 2012. The first epoch shows the same general spectral characteristics as the later epochs (smooth continuum, narrow H and HeI emission lines), but the IR continuum shape is substantially redder than the later epochs. The epoch 1 continuum can be approximated by reddening the peak-luminosity (epoch 3) spectrum by E(B-V)=1.0 mag, but the blue color seen in visual-wavelength spectra at the same time indicates that strong wavelength-dependent exti…
Despite both being outbursts of luminous blue variables (LBVs), SN 2009ip and UGC 2773 OT2009-1 have very different progenitors, spectra, circumstellar environments, and possibly physical mechanisms that generated the outbursts. From pre-eruption HST images, we determine that SN 2009ip and UGC 2773 OT2009-1 have initial masses of >60 and >25 M_sun, respectively. Optical spectroscopy shows that at peak SN 2009ip had a 10,000 K photosphere and its spectrum was dominated by narrow H Balmer emission, similar to classical LBV giant outbursts, also known as "supernova impostors." The spectra of UGC …

We present a sequence of eight spectropolarimetric observations monitoring the geometric evolution of the late phase of the major 2012 outburst of SN 2009ip. These were acquired with the FORS2 polarimeter mounted on ESO VLT. The continuum was polarised at 0.3-0.8 per cent throughout the observations, showing that the photosphere deviated substantially from spherical symmetry by 10-15 per cent. Significant line polarisation is detected for both hydrogen and helium at high velocities. The similarity in the polarised signal between these elements indicates that they form in the same location in t…
The recurrent nova T Pyx underwent its sixth historical outburst in 2011, and became the subject of an intensive multi-wavelength observational campaign. We analyze data from the Swift and Suzaku satellites to produce a detailed X-ray light curve augmented by epochs of spectral information. X-ray observations yield mostly non-detections in the first four months of outburst, but both a super-soft and hard X-ray component rise rapidly after Day 115. The super-soft X-ray component, attributable to the photosphere of the nuclear-burning white dwarf, is relatively cool (~45 eV) and implies that the…
We present a follow-up study on the recent detection of two X-ray flaring events by MAXI/GSC observations in soft and hard X-rays from MAXI J0709-159 in the direction of HD 54786 (LY CMa), on 2022 January 25. The X-ray luminosity during the flare was around 10^(37) erg/s (MAXI), which got reduced to 10^(32) erg/s (NuSTAR) after the flare. We took low-resolution spectra of HD 54786 from HCT and VBT facilities in India, on 2022 February 1 and 2. In addition to H-alpha emission, we found emission lines of He I in the optical spectrum of this star. By comparing our spectrum of the object with thos…
Aims. We report the discovery of a strong outburst of the embedded young stellar object (YSO), namely UKIDSS-J185318.36+012454.5, located in the star-forming region associated with IRAS 18507+0121 source and GAL 034.4+00.23 HII region. Methods. Using the archival photometric data and images we determined the amplitude and the epoch of the outburst, as well as the evolution stage and the basic parameters of the object. Results. According to the near and mid-infrared colors and spectral energy distribution, we classify the object as an intermediate-mass young stellar object (YSO) with Class 0/I …
We report on the identification of the optical counterpart to the recently detected INTEGRAL transient IGR J18245-2452 in the Galactic globular cluster M28. From the analysis of a multi epoch HST dataset we have identified a strongly variable star positionally coincident with the radio and Chandra X-ray sources associated to the INTEGRAL transient. The star has been detected during both a quiescent and an outburst state. In the former case it appears as a faint, unperturbed main sequence star, while in the latter state it is about two magnitudes brighter and slightly bluer than main sequence s…
