Disks around young stellar objects (YSOs) consist of material that thermally emits the energy provided by a combination of passive heating from the central star, and active, viscous heating due to mass accretion. FU Ori stars are YSOs with substantially enhanced accretion rates in their inner disk regions. As a disk transitions from standard low-state, to FU Ori-like high-state accretion, the outburst manifests through photometric brightening over a broad range of wavelengths. We present results for the expected amplitudes of the brightening between $\sim$4000 Å and 8 $μ$m -- the wavelength range where FU Ori type outburst events are most commonly detected. Our model consists of an optically thick passive $+$ active steady-state accretion disk with low and high accretion states.
EX Lup is the prototype of the EXor class of eruptive young stars. These objects show optical outbursts which are thought to be related to runaway accretion onto the star. In a previous study we observed in-situ crystal formation in the disk of EX Lup during its latest outburst in 2008, making the object an ideal laboratory to investigate circumstellar crystal formation and transport. This outburst was monitored by a campaign of ground-based and Spitzer Space Telescope observations. Here we modeled the spectral energy distribution of EX Lup in the outburst from optical to millimeter wavelength…
We report the discovery of a massive protostar M17~MIR embedded in a hot molecular core in M17. The multiwavelength data obtained during 1993--2019 show significant mid-IR (MIR) variations, which can be split into three stages: the decreasing phase during 1993.03--mid-2004, the quiescent phase from mid-2004 to mid-2010, and the rebrightening phase from mid-2010 until now. The variation of the 22\,GHz H$_2$O maser emission, together with the MIR variation, indicates an enhanced disk accretion rate onto M17~MIR during the decreasing and rebrightening phases. Radiative transfer modeling of the sp…

In recent years, dramatic outbursts have been identified toward massive protostars via infrared and millimeter dust continuum and molecular maser emission. The longest lived outburst ($>6$ yr) persists in NGC6334I-MM1, a deeply-embedded object with no near-IR counterpart. Using FORCAST and HAWC+ on SOFIA, we have obtained the first mid-infrared images of this field since the outburst began. Despite being undetected in pre-outburst ground-based 18 $μ$m images, MM1 is now the brightest region at all three wavelengths (25, 37, and 53 $μ$m), exceeding the ultracompact HII region MM3 (NGC6334F). Co…
We report the dramatic mid-infrared brightening between 2004 and 2006 of HOPS 383, a deeply embedded protostar adjacent to NGC 1977 in Orion. By 2008, the source became a factor of 35 brighter at 24 microns with a brightness increase also apparent at 4.5 microns. The outburst is also detected in the submillimeter by comparing APEX/SABOCA to SCUBA data, and a scattered-light nebula appeared in NEWFIRM K_s imaging. The post-outburst spectral energy distribution indicates a Class 0 source with a dense envelope and a luminosity between 6 and 14 L_sun. Post-outburst time-series mid- and far-infrare…
We report the discovery of a mid-infrared outburst in a Young Stellar Object (YSO) with an amplitude close to 8 mag at $λ$$\approx$4.6 $μ$m. WISEA J142238.82-611553.7 is one of 23 highly variable WISE sources discovered in a search of Infrared Dark Clouds (IRDCs). It lies within the small IRDC G313.671-0.309 (d$\approx$2.6 kpc), seen by the Herschel/HiGal survey as a compact, massive cloud core that may have been measurably warmed by the event. Pre-outburst data from Spitzer in 2004 suggest that it is a class I YSO, a view supported by observation of weak 2.12 $μ$m H$_2$ emission in an otherwi…
Aims. V838 Monocerotis erupted in 2002, brightened in a series of outbursts, and eventually developed a spectacular light echo. A very red star emerged a few months after the outburst. The whole event has been interpreted as the result of a merger. Methods. We obtained near-IR and mid-IR interferometric observations of V838 Mon with the AMBER and MIDI recombiners located at the Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI) array. The MIDI two-beam observations were obtained with the 8m Unit Telescopes between October 2011 and February 2012. The AMBER three-beam observations were obtained with the…
We present a comparison of archival Spitzer spectra of the strongly variable T Tauri EX Lupi, observed before and during its 2008 outburst. We analyze the mid-infrared emission from gas-phase molecules thought to originate in a circumstellar disk. In quiescence the emission shows a forest of H2O lines, highly excited OH lines, and the Q branches of the organics C2H2, HCN, and CO2, similar to the emission observed toward several T Tauri systems. The outburst emission shows instead remarkable changes: H2O and OH line fluxes increase, new OH, H2, and HI transitions are detected, and organics are …
Context: It is hypothesized that low-mass young stellar objects undergo eruptive phases during their early evolution. The outburst of V1647 Ori between 2003 and 2006 offered a rare opportunity to investigate such an accretion event. Aims: By means of our interferometry observing campaign during this outburst, supplemented by other observations, we investigate the temporal evolution of the inner circumstellar structure of V1647 Ori We also study the role of the changing extinction in the brightening of the object and separate it from the accretional brightening. Methods: We observed V1647 Ori w…
V1647 Ori is a young eruptive variable star, illuminating a reflection nebula (McNeil's Nebula). It underwent an outburst in 2003 before fading back to its pre-outburst brightness in 2006. In 2008, V1647 Ori underwent a new outburst. The observed properties of the 2003-2006 event are different in several respects from both the EXor and FUor type outbursts, and suggest that this star might represent a new class of eruptive young stars, younger and more deeply embedded than EXors, and exhibiting variations on shorter time scales than FUors. In outburst, the star lights up the otherwise invisible…
We present optical and near-IR observations of the young eruptive variable star V1647 Orionis which illuminates McNeil's Nebula. In late 2003, V1647 Ori was observed to brightened by around 5 mag to r'=17.7. In early 2006 the star faded back to its quiescent brightness of r'~23, however, in mid-2008 it brightened yet again by ~5 mag. Our new observations, taken in early 2011, show V1647 Ori to be in an elevated photometric state with an optical brightness similar to the value found at the start of the 2003 and 2008 outbursts. Optical images taken between 2008 and 2011 suggest that the star has…
We present results of Mt Abu JHK photometric and HI Brackett $γ$ line monitoring of the eruptive YSO V1647 Orionis (McNeil's Object) during the on-going outburst phase in 2008-2012. We discuss JHK colour patterns and extinction during the outburst and compare these with the previous outburst phase in 2004-05 and the intervening quiescent period of about 2 years. Commencing from early 2012, the object shows a slow fading out in all the bands. We report brightness variations in the nearby Herbig-Haro object HH22 possibly associated with those in V1647 Ori. We also present modelling of the spectr…
The light curve of Gaia23bab (= SPICY 97589) shows two significant ($ΔG>2$ mag) brightening events, one in 2017 and an ongoing event starting in 2022. The source's quiescent spectral energy distribution indicates an embedded ($A_V>5$ mag) pre-main-sequence star, with optical accretion emission and mid-infrared disk emission. This characterization is supported by the source's membership in an embedded cluster in the star-forming cloud DOBASHI 1604 at a distance of $900\pm45$~pc. Thus, the brightening events are probable accretion outbursts, likely of EX Lup-type.

We have developed time-dependent models of FU Ori accretion outbursts to explore the physical properties of protostellar disks. Our two-dimensional, axisymmetric models incorporate full vertical structure with a new treatment of the radiative boundary condition for the disk photosphere. We find that FU Ori-type outbursts can be explained by a slow accumulation of matter due to gravitational instability. Eventually this triggers the magnetorotational instability, which leads to rapid accretion. The thermal instability is triggered in the inner disk but this instability is not necessary for the …
We report on the source Gaia 17bpi and identify it as a new, ongoing FU Ori type outburst, associated with a young stellar object. The optical lightcurve from Gaia exhibited a 3.5 mag rise with the source appearing to plateau in mid/late 2018. Mid-infrared observations from NEOWISE also show a $>$3 mag rise that occurred in two stages, with the second one coincident with the optical brightening, and the first one preceding the optical brightening by $\sim$1.5 years. We model the outburst as having started between October and December of 2014. This wavelength-dependent aspect of young star accr…
We present results from an optical imaging and spectroscopic monitoring campaign on the young, low-mass eruptive variable star V1647 Orionis. The star and associated nebulosity (McNeil's Nebula) were observed over the period February 2004 to February 2006 with observations commencing a few months after the original outburst event occurred. Using the Gemini North telescope, we obtained multi-band optical imaging photometry and medium-resolution long-slit spectroscopy of V1647 Ori on an approximately monthly interval. During this period, V1647 Ori remained at, or close to, peak brightness and th…
We report the detection of a large amplitude MIR outburst in the white dwarf (WD) 0145+234 in the NEOWISE Survey data. The source had a stable MIR flux before 2018, and was brightened by about 1.0 magnitude in the W1 and W2 bands within half a year and has been continuously brightening since then. No significant variations are found in the optical photometry data during the same period. This suggests that this MIR outburst is caused by recent replenishing or redistribution of dust, rather than intrinsic variations of the WD. SED modeling of 0145+234 suggests that there was already a dust disk …
An enigmatic and rare type of young stellar object is the FU Orionis class. The members are interpreted as "outbursting," that is, currently in a state of enhanced accretion by several orders of magnitude relative to the more modest disk-to-star accretion rates measured in typical T Tauri stars. They are key to our understanding of the history of stellar mass assembly and pre-main sequence evolution, as well as critical to consider in the chemical and physical evolution of the circumstellar environment -- where planets form. A common supposition is that *all* T Tauri stars undergo repeated suc…
We present a detailed study of McNeil's nebula (V1647 Ori) in its ongoing outburst phase starting from September 2008 to March 2013. Our 124 nights of photometric observations were carried out in optical V, R, I and near-infrared J, H, K bands, and 59 nights of medium resolution spectroscopic observations were done in 5200 - 9000 Ang wavelength range. All observations were carried out with 2-m Himalayan Chandra Telescope and 2-m IUCAA Girawali Telescope. Our observations show that over last four and a half years, V1647 Ori and the region C near Herbig-Haro object, HH 22A, have been undergoing …
Z CMa is a binary system which consists of two young stars: A Herbig AeBe component "Z CMa NW" embedded in a dust cocoon and a less massive component "Z CMa SE", which is classified as a FU Orionis type star. Recently, the system showed the largest outburst reported during the almost 90 years of available observations. During the recent outburst we detect that the Z CMa system is polarized by 2.6% in the continuum and emission line spectrum, with a position angle still perpendicular to the jet. From the high level of polarization we conclude that the outburst is associated with the dust embedd…
We present an investigation of a large sample of confirmed (N=233) and candidate (N=54) Galactic classical Be stars (mean V magnitude range of 6.4 to 12.6 mag), with the main aim of characterizing their photometric variability. Our sample stars were preselected among early-type variables using light curve morphology criteria. Spectroscopic information was gleaned from the literature, and archival and newly-acquired spectra. Photometric variability was analyzed using archival ASAS-3 time series data. To enable a comparison of results, we have largely adopted the methodology of Labadie-Bartz et …

本文报告了 V7995 Sgr 在 2024 年底达到峰值亮度的一次 FU Orionis 型爆发,基于多波段光变曲线和光谱观测,确认其由吸积盘驱动并伴有强风。
Our Solar System originated in interstellar gas and dust; the latter is in the form of amorphous silicate particles and carbonaceous dust. The composition of cometary material shows that a significant fraction of the amorphous silicates was transformed into crystalline form during the early evolution of the protosolar nebula. How and when this transformation happened has been controversial, with the main options being heating by the young Sun or shock heating. Here we report mid-infrared features in the outburst spectrum of the young solar-like star EX Lupi that were not present in quiescence.…
Abriged version for astroph: The young late-type star V1118 Orionis was in outburst from 2005 to 2006. We followed the outburst with optical and near-infrared photometry; the X-ray emission was further probed with observations taken with XMM-Newton and Chandra during and after the outburst. In addition, we obtained mid-infrared photometry and spectroscopy with Spitzer at the peak of the outburst and in the post-outburst phase. The spectral energy distribution of V1118 Ori varied significantly over the course of the outburst. The optical flux showed the largest variations, most likely due to en…
Aims: We conducted the first X-ray observations of the newly erupting FU Ori-type outburst in HBC 722 (V2493 Cyg) with the aim to characterize its X-ray behavior and near-stellar environment during early outburst. Methods: We used data from the XMM-Newton and Chandra X-ray observatories to measure X-ray source temperatures and luminosities as well as the gas column densities along the line of sight toward the source. Results: We report a Chandra X-ray detection of HBC 722 with an X-ray luminosity of LX ~ 4E30 erg s-1. The gas column density exceeds values expected from optical extinction and s…
We report Submillimeter Array (SMA) 1.3 mm high angular resolution observations towards the four EXor type outbursting young stellar objects (YSOs) VY Tau, V1118 Ori, V1143 Ori, and NY Ori. The data mostly show low dust masses $M_{dust}$ in the associated circumstellar disks. Among the sources, NY Ori possesses a relatively massive disk with $M_{dust} \sim 9 \times 10^{-4}$ $M_{\odot}$. V1118 Ori has a marginal detection equivalent to $M_{dust} \sim 6 \times 10^{-5}$ $M_{\odot}$. V1143 Ori has a non-detection also equivalent to $M_{dust} < 6 \times 10^{-5}$ $M_{\odot}$. For the nearest source …
Strong outbursts in very young and embedded protostars are rare and not yet fully understood. They are believed to originate from an increase of the mass accretion rate onto the source. We report the discovery of a strong outburst in a low-mass embedded young stellar object (YSO), namely 2MASS-J05424848-0816347 or [CTF93]216-2, as well as its photometric and spectroscopic follow-up. Using near- to mid-IR photometry and NIR low-resolution spectroscopy, we monitor the outburst, deriving its magnitude, duration, as well as the enhanced accretion luminosity and mass accretion rate. [CTF93]216-2 in…
During their formation phase stars gain most of their mass in violent episodic accretion events, such as observed in FU Orionis (FUor) and EXor stars. V346 Normae is a well-studied FUor that underwent a strong outburst beginning in $\sim1980$. Here, we report photometric and spectroscopic observations which show that the visual/near-infrared brightness has decreased dramatically between the 1990s and 2010 ($ΔR\approx10.9^{\rm m}$, $ΔJ\approx7.8^{\rm m}$, $ΔK\approx5.8^{\rm m}$). The spectral properties of this fading event cannot be explained with variable extinction alone, but indicate a drop…
We report the discovery of a large amplitude outburst from the young star HBC 722 (LkHA 188 G4) located in the region of NGC 7000/IC 5070. On the basis of photometric and spectroscopic observations, we argue that this outburst is of the FU Orionis type. We gathered photometric and spectroscopic observations of the object both in the pre-outburst state and during a phase of increase in its brightness. The photometric BVRI data (Johnson-Cousins system) that we present were collected from April 2009 to September 2010. To facilitate transformation from instrumental measurements to the standard sys…
An optical light curve of SU UMa type dwarf nova V1504 Cyg taken by Kepler was analysed in order to study fast optical variability (flickering). We calculated power density spectra and rms-flux relations for two different stages of activity, i.e. quiescence and regular outbursts. A multicomponent power density spectrum with two break frequencies was found during both activity stages. The rms-flux relation is obvious only in the quiescent data. However, while the collection of all outburst data do not show this variability, every individual outburst does show it in the majority of cases keeping…
We present mid-IR photometry and spectra of the merged binary V1309 Sco taken between 18 and 23 months after outburst. Strong mid-IR emission and a solid state absorption feature indicate the presence of a significant amount of dust in the circumstellar environment. The absence of detectable mid-IR emission before the outburst suggests this dust was produced in the eruptive merger event. Model fits to the solid state absorption feature constrain the constituent species and column density of the dust around V1309 Sco. We find the absorption feature can be reproduced by large (3 micron) amorphou…
Individual outbursting young stars are important laboratories for studying the physics of episodic accretion and the extent to which this phenomenon can explain the luminosity distribution of protostars. We present new and archival data for V2775 Ori (HOPS 223), a protostar in the L 1641 region of the Orion molecular clouds that was discovered by Caratti o Garatti et al. (2011) to have recently undergone an order-of-magnitude increase in luminosity. Our near-infrared spectra of the source have strong blueshifted He I 10830 absorption, strong H2O and CO absorption, and no H I emission, all typi…
We perform global time-dependent simulations of an accretion disc around a young stellar object with a dead zone (a region where the magneto-rotational instability cannot drive turbulence because the material is not sufficiently ionised). For infall accretion rates on to the disc of around 10^-7 Msun/yr, dead zones occur if the critical magnetic Reynolds number is larger than about 10^4. We model the collapse of a molecular gas cloud. At early times when the infall accretion rate is high, the disc is thermally ionised and fully turbulent. However, as the infall accretion rate drops, a dead zon…
The pre-main sequence star V1647 Ori has recently undergone two optical/near-infrared (OIR) outbursts that are associated with dramatic enhancements in the stellar accretion rate. Our intensive X-ray monitoring of this object affords the opportunity to investigate whether and how the intense X-ray emission is related to pre-MS accretion activity. Our analysis of all fourteen Chandra X-ray Observatory observations of V1647 Ori demonstrate that variations in the X-ray luminosity of V1647 Ori are correlated with similar changes in the OIR brightness of this source during both (2003-2005 and 2008)…
After a long-lasting period of quiescence of about a decade, the source V1118 Ori, one of the most representative members of the EXor variables, is now outbursting. Since the initial increase of the near-infrared flux of about 1 mag (JHK bands) registered on 2015 September 22, the source brightness has remained fairly stable. We estimate DeltaV about 3 mag with respect to the quiescence phase. An optical/near-IR low-resolution spectrum has been obtained with the Large Binocular Telescope instruments MODS and LUCI2, and compared with a spectrum of similar spectral resolution and sensitivity lev…
We briefly summarize the observational properties of ultra-compact binaries called AM CVn stars. We analize their outbursts originating from the thermal-viscous instability in helium accretion disc. We present our preliminary results in applying the model of Dwarf Novae outbursts to helium discs. We can calculate models of outbursts of reasonable amplitude of 2 mag with a constant alfa parameter throughout the calculation. Setting the mass transfer rate close to its upper critical value produces model lightcurves that resemble short superoutbursts.
The first results from studies of the new FU Orionis star found in the field of NGC 7000 are presented in the paper. During the year passing from the registration of outburst at fourteen papers containing data from observations of this object have been published in the astronomical journals. These publications present photometric and spectral observations of HBC 722 ranging from the far infrared to X-ray wavelength region. HBC 722 is the first FU Orionis object, whose outburst was observed from its very beginning in all spectral ranges. We expect that the interest in this object will increase …

The Z CMa binary is understood to undergo both FU Orionis (FUOR) and EX Orionis (EXOR) type outbursts. While the SE component has been spectro- scopically identified as an FUOR, the NW component, a Herbig Be star, is the source of the EXOR outbursts. The system has been identified as the source of a large outflow, however, previous studies have failed to identify the driver. Here we present adaptive optics (AO) assisted [FeII] spectro-images which reveal for the first time the presence of two jets. Observations made using OSIRIS at the Keck Observatory show the Herbig Be star to be the source …
After a quiescence period of about 10 years, the classical EXor source V1118 Ori has undergone an accretion outburst in 2015 September. The maximum brightness (DV > 4 mag) was reached in 2015 December and was maintained for several months. Since 2016 September, the source is in a declining phase. Photometry and low/ high-resolution spectroscopy were obtained with MODS and LUCI2 at the {\it Large Binocular Telescope}, with the facilities at the Asiago 1.22 and 1.82 m telescopes, and with GIANO at the {\it Telescopio Nazionale Galileo}. The spectra are dominated by emission lines of \hi\ and neu…
We extend the one-dimensional, two-zone models of long-term protostellar disk evolution with infall of Zhu et al. to consider the potential effects of a finite viscosity in regions where the ionization is too low for the magnetorotational instability (MRI) to operate (the "dead zone"). We find that the presence of a small but finite dead zone viscosity, as suggested by simulations of stratified disks with MRI-active outer layers, can trigger inside-out bursts of accretion, starting at or near the inner edge of the disk, instead of the previously-found outside-in bursts with zero dead zone visc…
We present new high-resolution infrared echelle spectra of V1647 Ori, the young star that illuminates McNeil's nebula. From the start, V1647 Ori has been an enigmatic source that has defied classification, in some ways resembling eruptive stars of the FUor class and in other respects the EXor variables. V1647 Ori underwent an outburst in 2003 before fading back to its pre-outburst brightness in 2006. In 2008, it underwent a new outburst. In this paper we present high-resolution K-band and M-band spectra from the W. M. Keck Observatory that were acquired during the 2008 outburst. We compare the…
Z CMa is a young binary system consisting of an Herbig primary and a FU Ori companion. Both components seem to be surrounded by active accretion disks and a jet was associated to the Herbig B0. In Nov. 2008, K. Grankin discovered that Z CMa was exhibiting an outburst with an amplitude larger than any photometric variations recorded in the last 25 years. To study the innermost regions in which the outburst occurs and understand its origin, we have observed both binary components with AMBER/VLTI across the Brγ emission line in Dec. 2009 in medium and high spectral resolution modes. Our observati…
The VISTA Variables in the Via Lactea (VVV) survey obtained near-infrared photometry toward the Galactic bulge and the southern disc plane for a decade (2010 - 2019). We designed a modified Lomb-Scargle method to search for large-amplitude ($Δ$Ks > 1.5 mag) mid to long-term periodic variables (P > 10 d) in the 2nd version of VVV Infrared Astrometric Catalogue (VIRAC2-$β$). In total, 1520 periodic sources were discovered, including 59 candidate periodic outbursting young stellar objects (YSOs), based on the unique morphology of the phase-folded light curves, proximity to Galactic HII regions an…
We report the results of our high resolution optical spectroscopic monitoring campaign ($λ$ = 3800 -- 8800 A, R = 30000 -- 45000) of the new FU Orionis-type object HBC 722. We observed HBC 722 with the BOES 1.8-m telescope between 2010 November 26 and 2010 December 29 and FU Orionis itself on 2011 January 26. We detect a number of previously unreported high-resolution K I and Ca II lines beyond 7500 A. We resolve the H$α$ and Ca II line profiles into three velocity components, which we attribute to both disk and outflow. The increased accretion during outburst can heat the disk to produce the …
An interferometric mid-infrared study of the eruptive star binary Z CMa with MATISSE/VLTI. I. Imaging the protoplanetary disks during the 2023 outburst
We present new results from optical photometric and spectroscopic observations of the eruptive pre-main sequence star V2493 Cyg (HBC 722). The object has continued to undergo significant brightness variations over the past few months and is an ideal target for follow-up observations. We carried out CCD BVRI photometric observations in the field of V2493 Cyg ("Gulf of Mexico") from August 1994 to April 2012, i.e. at the pre-outburst states and during the phases of the outburst. We acquired high, medium, and low resolution spectroscopy of V2493 Cyg during the outburst. To study the pre-outburst …
