We present a comprehensive study of the symmetries of the generating functionals of generic Langevin processes with multiplicative colored noise. We treat both Martin-Siggia-Rose-Janssen-deDominicis and supersymmetric formalisms. We summarize the relations between observables that they imply including fluctuation relations, fluctuation-dissipation theorems, and Schwinger-Dyson equations. Newtonian dynamics and their invariances follow in the vanishing friction limit.
In this letter, we develop a mode-coupling theory for a class of nonlinear Langevin equations with multiplicative noise using a field theoretic formalism. These equations are simplified models of realistic colloidal suspensions. We prove that the derived equations are consistent with the fluctuation-dissipation theorem. We also discuss the generalization of the result given here to real fluids, and the possible description of supercooled fluids in the aging regime. We demonstrate that the standard idealized mode-coupling theory is not consistent with the FDT in a strict field theoretic sense.
A random multiplicative process with additive noise is described by a Langevin equation. We show that the fluctuation-dissipation relation is satisfied in the Langevin model, if the noise strength is not so strong.
The Langevin equation with multiplicative noise and state-dependent transport coefficient has to be always complemented with the proper interpretation rule of the noise, such as the Ito and Stratonovich conventions. Although the mathematical relationship between the different rules and how to translate from one rule to another are well-established, it still remains controversial what is a more {\it physically} natural rule. In this communication, we derive the overdamped Langevin equation with multiplicative noise for Brownian particles, by systematically eliminating the fast degrees of freedo…
We have discussed the dynamics of Langevin model subjected to colored noise, by using the functional-integral method (FIM) combined with equations of motion for mean and variance of the state variable. Two sets of colored noise have been investigated: (a) one additive and one multiplicative colored noise, and (b) one additive and two multiplicative colored noise. The case (b) is examined with the relevance to a recent controversy on the stationary subthreshold voltage distribution of an integrate-and-fire model including stochastic excitatory and inhibitory synapses and a noisy input. We have …
An overdamped system with a linear restoring force and two multiplicative colored noises is considered. Noise amplitudes depend on the system state $x$ as $x$ and $|x|^α$. An exactly soluble model of a system is constructed due to consideration of a specific relation between noises. Exact expressions for the time-dependent univariate probability distribution function and the fractional moments are derived. Their long-time asymptotic behavior is investigated analytically. It is shown that anomalous diffusion and stochastic localization of particles, not subjected to a restoring force, can occur…
We consider the Langevin lattice dynamics for a spontaneously broken lambda phi^4 scalar field theory where both additive and multiplicative noise terms are incorporated. The lattice renormalization for the corresponding stochastic Ginzburg-Landau-Langevin and the subtleties related to the multiplicative noise are investigated.
Usually discussions on the question of interpretation in the Langevin equation with multiplicative white noise are limited to the Ito and Stratonovich prescriptions. In this work, a Langevin equation with multiplicative white noise and its Fokker-Planck equation are considered. From this Fokker-Planck equation a connection between the stationary solution and the Tsallis distribution is obtained for different orders of prescription in discretization rule for the stochastic integrals; the Tsallis index $q$ and the prescription parameter (λ) are determined with the drift and diffusion coefficient…
We discuss the use of a Langevin equation with a colored (correlated) noise to perform constant-temperature molecular dynamics simulations. Since the equations of motion are linear in nature, it is easy to predict the response of a Hamiltonian system to such a thermostat and to tune at will the relaxation time of modes of different frequency. This allows one to optimize the time needed to thermalize the system and generate independent configurations. We show how this frequency-dependent response can be exploited to control the temperature of Car-Parrinello-like dynamics, keeping at low tempera…
The multi-dimensional non-linear Langevin equation with multiplicative Gaussian white noises in Ito's sense is made covariant with respect to non-linear transform of variables. The formalism involves no metric or affine connection, works for systems with or without detailed balance, and is substantially simpler than previous theories. Its relation with deterministic theory is clarified. The unitary limit and Hermitian limit of the theory are examined. Some implications on the choices of stochastic calculus are also discussed.
We statistically examine long time sequences of Brownian motion for a nonequilibrium version of the Rayleigh piston model and confirm that the third cumulant of a long-time displacement for the nonequilibrium Brownian motion linearly increases with the observation time interval. We identify a multiplicative Langevin equation that can reproduce the cumulants of the long-time displacement up to at least the third order, as well as its mean, variance and skewness. The identified Langevin equation involves a velocity-dependent friction coefficient that breaks the time-reversibility and may act as …
Efficient and accurate integration of stochastic (partial) differential equations with multiplicative noise can be obtained through a split-step scheme, which separates the integration of the deterministic part from that of the stochastic part, the latter being performed by sampling exactly the solution of the associated Fokker-Planck equation. We demonstrate the computational power of this method by applying it to most absorbing phase transitions for which Langevin equations have been proposed. This provides precise estimates of the associated scaling exponents, clarifying the classification …
The virial theorem, and the equipartition theorem in the case of quadratic degrees of freedom, are handy constraints on the statistics of equilibrium systems. Their violation is instrumental in determining how far from equilibrium a driven system might be. We extend the virial theorem to nonequilibrium conditions for Langevin dynamics with nonlinear friction and multiplicative noise. In particular, we generalize the equipartition theorem for confined laser-cooled atoms in the semi-classical regime. The resulting relation between the lowest moments of the atom position and velocity allows to me…
Power-law distributions are ubiquitous in nature. Random multiplicative processes are a basic model for the generation of power-law distributions. It is known that, for discrete-time systems, the power-law exponent decreases as the autocorrelation time of the multiplier increases. However, for continuous-time ystems, it has not yet been elucidated as to how the temporal correlation affects the power-law behavior. Herein, we have analytically investigated a multiplicative Langevin equation with colored noise. We show that the power-law exponent depends on the details of the multiplicative noise…
We discuss general multi-dimensional stochastic processes driven by a system of Langevin equations with multiplicative white noise. In particular, we address the problem of how time reversal diffusion processes are affected by the variety of conventions available to deal with stochastic integrals. We present a functional formalism to built up the generating functional of correlation functions without any type of discretization of the Langevin equations at any intermediate step. The generating functional is characterized by a functional integration over two sets of commuting variables as well a…
We study the spatial distributions of two randomly interacting species, in the presence of an external multiplicative colored noise. The dynamics of the ecosystem is described by a coupled map lattice model. We find a nonmonotonic behavior in the formation of large scale spatial correlations as a function of the multiplicative colored noise intensity. This behavior is shifted towards higher values of the noise intensity for increasing correlation time of the noise.
Stochastic bistable systems whose stationary distributions belong to the q-exponential family are investigated using two approaches: (i) the Langevin model subjected to additive and quadratic multiplicative noise, and (ii) the superstatistical model. Previously, the bistable Langevin model has been analyzed under linear multiplicative noise, whereas this paper reports on quadratic multiplicative noise, which is more physically meaningful. The stationary distribution of the Langevin model under quadratic multiplicative noise, which agrees with that derived by the maximum Tsallis entropy method,…
We have studied the finite $N$-unit Langevin model subjected to multiplicative noises, by using the augmented moment method (AMM), as a continuation of our previous paper [H. Hasegawa, J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. {\bf 75} (2006) 033001]. Effects of couplings on stationary and dynamical properties of the model have been investigated. The difference and similarity between the results of diffusive and sigmoid couplings are studied in details. Time dependences of average and fluctuations in local and global variables calculated by the AMM are in good agreement with those of direct simulations (DSs). We als…
The synchrony and variability have been discussed of the coupled Langevin model subjected to spatially correlated additive and multiplicative noise. We have employed numerical simulations and the analytical augmented-moment method which is the second-order moment method for local and global variables [H. Hasegawa, Phys. Rev. E {\bf 67}, 041903 (2003)]. It has been shown that the synchrony of an ensemble is increased (decreased) by a positive (negative) spatial correlation in both additive and multiplicative noise. Although the variability for local fluctuations is almost insensitive to spatial…
We present a path integral formalism to compute potentials for nonequilibrium steady states, reached by a multiplicative stochastic dynamics. We develop a weak-noise expansion, which allows the explicit evaluation of the potential in arbitrary dimensions and for any stochastic prescription. We apply this general formalism to study noise-induced phase transitions. We focus on a class of multiplicative stochastic lattice models and compute the steady state phase diagram in terms of the noise intensity and the lattice coupling. We obtain, under appropriate conditions, an ordered phase induced by …
We study the role of multiplicative colored noise for different values of the correlation time $τ_c$ in the dynamics of two competing species, described by generalized Lotka-Volterra equations. The multiplicative colored noise models the interaction between the species and the environment. The interaction parameter between the species is a random process which obeys a stochastic differential equation with a generalized bistable potential in the presence of a periodic driving term, which accounts for the environment temperature variation. The bistable potential is useful to describe the coexist…
A Langevin equation with multiplicative noise is an equation schematically of the form dq/dt = -F(q) + e(q) xi, where e(q) xi is Gaussian white noise whose amplitude e(q) depends on q itself. Such equations are ambiguous, and depend on the details of one's convention for discretizing time when solving them. I show that these ambiguities are uniquely resolved if the system has a known equilibrium distribution exp[-V(q)/T] and if, at some more fundamental level, the physics of the system is reversible. I also discuss a simple example where this happens, which is the small frequency limit of Newt…
We propose a variational superposed Gaussian approximation (VSGA) for dynamical solutions of Langevin equations subject to applied signals, determining time-dependent parameters of superposed Gaussian distributions by the variational principle. We apply the proposed VSGA to systems driven by a chaotic signal, where the conventional Fourier method cannot be adopted, and calculate the time evolution of probability density functions (PDFs) and moments. Both white and colored Gaussian noises terms are included to describe fluctuations. Our calculations show that time-dependent PDFs obtained by VSG…
Finite $N$-unit Langevin models with additive and multiplicative noises have been studied with the use of the augmented moment method (AMM) previously proposed by the author [H. Hasegawa, Phys. Rev E {\bf 67}, 041903 (2003)]. Original $N$-dimensional stochastic equations are transformed to the three-dimensional deterministic equations for means and fluctuations of local and global variables. Calculated results of our AMM are in good agreement with those of direct simulations (DS). We have shown that although the effective strength of the additive noise of the $N$-unit system is scaled as $β(N)…
Using the recently developed covariant Ito-Langevin dynamics, we develop a non-equilibrium thermodynamic theory for small systems coupled to multiplicative noises. The theory is based on Ito-calculus, and is fully covariant under time-independent nonlinear transformation of variables. Assuming instantaneous detailed balance, we derive expressions for various thermodynamic functions, including work, heat, entropy production, and free energy, both at ensemble level and at trajectory level, and prove the second law of thermodynamics for arbitrary non-equilibrium processes. We relate time-reversal…
The stochastic resonance (SR) in bistable systems has been extensively discussed with the use of {\it phenomenological} Langevin models. By using the {\it microscopic}, generalized Caldeira-Leggett (CL) model, we study in this paper, SR of an open bistable system coupled to a bath with a nonlinear system-bath interaction. The adopted CL model yields the non-Markovian Langevin equation with nonlinear dissipation and state-dependent diffusion which preserve the fluctuation-dissipation relation (FDR). From numerical calculations, we find the following: (1) the spectral power amplification (SPA) e…
We derive a relation similar to the fluctuation theorem for work done on a system obeying Langevin dynamics with thermal and colored noises. Then, we propose a method of calculating the correlation function of the colored noise by using this fluctuation relation.
We have studied dynamical responses and the Jarzynski equality (JE) of classical open systems described by the generalized Caldeira-Leggett model with the nonlocal system-bath coupling. In the derived non-Markovian Langevin equation, the nonlinear nonlocal dissipative term and state-dependent diffusion term yielding multiplicative colored noise satisfy the fluctuation-dissipation relation. Simulation results for harmonic oscillator systems have shown the following: (a) averaged responses of the system $< x >$ to applied sinusoidal and step forces significantly depend on model parameters of mag…
We have studied the synchronization induced by periodic inputs applied to the finite $N$-unit coupled bistable Langevin model which is subjected to cross-correlated additive and multiplicative noises. Effects on the synchronization of the system size ($N$), the coupling strength and the cross-correlation between additive and multiplicative noises have been investigated with the use of the semi-analytical augmented moment method (AMM) which is the second-order moment approximation for local and global variables [H. Hasegawa, Phys. Rev. E {\bf 67} (2003) 041903]. A linear analysis of the station…
We present a picture of phase transitions of the system with colored multiplicative noise. Considering the noise amplitude as the power-law dependence of the stochastic variable $x^a$ we show the way to phase transitions disorder-order and order-disorder. The governed equations for the order parameter and one-time correlator are obtained and investigated in details. The long-time asymptotes in the disordered and ordered domains on the phase portrait of the system are defined.
Fluctuation properties of the Langevin equation including a multiplicative, power-law noise and a quadratic potential are discussed. The noise has the Levy stable distribution. If this distribution is truncated, the covariance can be derived in the limit of large time; it falls exponentially. Covariance in the stable case, studied for the Cauchy distribution, exhibits a weakly stretched exponential shape and can be approximated by the simple exponential. The dependence of that function on system parameters is determined. Then we consider a dynamics which involves the above process and obey the…
Singularities in d-dimensional Langevin equations with anisotropic multiplicative noise and lack of self-adjointness in the corresponding Schrodinger equation
A coupled map lattice of generalized Lotka-Volterra equations in the presence of colored multiplicative noise is used to analyze the spatiotemporal evolution of three interacting species: one predator and two preys symmetrically competing each other. The correlation of the species concentration over the grid as a function of time and of the noise intensity is investigated. The presence of noise induces pattern formation, whose dimensions show a nonmonotonic behavior as a function of the noise intensity. The colored noise induces a greater dimension of the patterns with respect to the white noi…
We present a supersymmetric formulation of Markov processes, represented by a family of Langevin equations with multiplicative white-noise. The hidden symmetry encodes equilibrium properties such as fluctuation-dissipation relations. The formulation does not depend on the particular prescription to define the Wiener integral. In this way, different equilibrium distributions, reached at long times for each prescription, can be formally treated on the same footing.
The Langevin equation with a multiplicative Lévy white noise is solved. The noise amplitude and the drift coefficient have a power-law form. A validity of ordinary rules of the calculus for the Stratonovich interpretation is discussed. The solution has the algebraic asymptotic form and the variance may assume a finite value for the case of the Stratonovich interpretation. The problem of escaping from a potential well is analysed numerically; predictions of different interpretations of the stochastic integral are compared.
We demonstrate that the conventional path integral formulations generate inconsistent results exemplified by the geometric Brownian motion under the general stochastic interpretation. We thus develop a novel path integral formulation for the overdamped Langevin equation with the multiplicative noise. The present path integral leads to the corresponding Fokker-Planck equation, and naturally gives a normalized transition probability consistently in examples for general stochastic interpretations. Our result can be applied to study the fluctuation theorems and numerical calculations based on the …
The mean-square displacement (MSD) is widely utilized to study the dynamical properties of stochastic processes. The time-averaged MSD (TAMSD) provides some information on the dynamics which cannot be extracted from the ensemble-averaged MSD. In particular, the relative standard deviation (RSD) of the TAMSD can be utilized to study the long time relaxation behavior. In this work, we consider a class of Langevin equations which are multiplicatively coupled to time-dependent and fluctuating diffusivities. Various interesting dynamics models such as entangled polymers and supercooled liquids can …
A Langevin equation with multiplicative noise is an equation schematically of the form dq/dt = - F(q) + e(q) xi, where e(q) xi is Gaussian white noise whose amplitude e(q) depends on q itself. I show how to convert such equations into path integrals. The definition of the path integral depends crucially on the convention used for discretizing time, and I specifically derive the correct path integral when the convention used is the natural, time-symmetric one that time derivatives are (q_t - q_{t-Δt}) / Δt and coordinates are (q_t + q_{t-Δt}) / 2. [This is the convention that permits standard m…
Langevin equation with a multiplicative stochastic force is considered. That force is uncorrelated, it has the Lévy distribution and the power-law intensity. The Fokker-Planck equations, which correspond both to the Itô and Stratonovich interpretation of the stochastic integral, are presented. They are solved for the case without drift and for the harmonic oscillator potential. The variance is evaluated; it is always infinite for the Itô case whereas for the Stratonovich one it can be finite and rise with time slower that linearly, which indicates subdiffusion. Analytical results are compared …
The friction coefficient of a particle can depend on its position as it does when the particle is near a wall. We formulate the dynamics of particles with such state-dependent friction coefficients in terms of a general Langevin equation with multiplicative noise, whose evaluation requires the introduction of specific rules. Two common conventions, the Ito and the Stratonovich, provide alternative rules for evaluation of the noise, but other conventions are possible. We show the requirement that a particle's distribution function approach the Boltzmann distribution at long times dictates that …
The asymptotic behavior of a nonlinear oscillator subject to a multiplicative Ornstein-Uhlenbeck noise is investigated. When the dynamics is expressed in terms of energy-angle coordinates, it is observed that the angle is a fast variable as compared to the energy. Thus, an effective stochastic dynamics for the energy can be derived if the angular variable is averaged out. However, the standard elimination procedure, performed earlier for a Gaussian white noise, fails when the noise is colored because of correlations between the noise and the fast angular variable. We develop here a specific av…
We propose a generalized Langevin formalism to describe transport in combs and similar ramified structures. Our approach consists of a Langevin equation without drift for the motion along the backbone. The motion along the secondary branches may be described either by a Langevin equation or by other types of random processes. The mean square displacement (MSD) along the backbone characterizes the transport through the ramified structure. We derive a general analytical expression for this observable in terms of the probability distribution function of the motion along the secondary branches. We…
A continuous approximation framework for non-linear stochastic as well as deterministic discrete maps is developed. For the stochastic map with uncorelated Gaussian noise, by successively applying the Itô lemma, we obtain a Langevin type of equation. Specifically, we show how non-linear maps give rise to a Langevin description that involves multiplicative noise. The multiplicative nature of the noise induces an additional effective force, not present in the absence of noise. We further exploit the continuum description and provide an explicit formula for the stable distribution of the stochast…
The generalised Langevin equation with a retarded friction and a double-well potential is solved. The random force is modelled by a multiplicative noise with long jumps. Probability density distributions converge with time to a distribution similar to a Gaussian but tails have a power-law form. Dependence of the mean first passage time on model parameters is discussed. Properties of the stochastic resonance, emerging as a peak in the plot of the spectral amplification against the temperature, are discussed for various sets of the model parameters. The amplification rises with the memory and is…
The Langevin system subjected to non-Gaussian noise has been discussed, by using the second-order moment approach with two kinds of models for generating the noise. We have derived the effective differential equation (DE) for a variable $x$, from which the stationary probability distribution $P(x)$ has been calculated with the use of the Fokker-Planck equation. The result of $P(x)$ calculated by the moment method is compared to several expressions obtained by different methods such as the universal colored noise approximation (UCNA) [Jung and Hänggi, Phys. Rev. A {\bf 35}, 4464 (1987)] and the…
When nano-magnets are coupled to random external sources, their magnetization becomes a random variable, whose properties are defined by an induced probability density, that can be reconstructed from its moments, using the Langevin equation, for mapping the noise to the dynamical degrees of freedom. When the spin dynamics is discretized in time, a general fluctuation-dissipation theorem, valid for non-Markovian noise, can be established, even when zero modes are present. We discuss the subtleties that arise, when Gilbert damping is present and the mapping between noise and spin degrees of free…
We present a method, based on a non-Markovian Langevin equation, to include quantum corrections to the classical dynamics of ions in a quasi-harmonic system. By properly fitting the correlation function of the noise, one can vary the fluctuations in positions and momenta as a function of the vibrational frequency, and fit them so as to reproduce the quantum-mechanical behavior, with minimal a priori knowledge of the details of the system. We discuss the application of the thermostat to diamond and to ice Ih. We find that results in agreement with path-integral molecular dynamics can be obtaine…
Stochastic resonance induced by external factor is considering to investigate the complex dynamics of tumor. The surrounding environment and the treatment effects on the tumor growth are considered as additive and multiplicative noises in growth model. The adaptability of tumor to treatment is presented by correlation of these two noises. The Fokker-Plank equation is deduced to study the probability distribution function and mean number of tumor cells in different conditions. The mean number of tumor cells can be controlled by the correlation and intensity of noises.
In this paper, we investigate a Langevin model subjected to stochastic intensity noise (SIN), which incorporates temporal fluctuations in noise-intensity. We derive a higher-order Fokker-Planck equation (HFPE) of the system, taking into account the effect of SIN by the adiabatic elimination technique. Stationary distributions of the HFPE are calculated by using the perturbation expansion. We investigate the effect of SIN in three cases: (a) parabolic and quartic bistable potentials with additive noise, (b) a quartic potential with multiplicative noise, and (c) a stochastic gene expression mode…
We study the Langevin equation with both a white noise and a colored noise. We construct the Lagrangian as well as the Hamiltonian for the generalized Langevin equation which leads naturally to a path integral description from first principles. This derivation clarifies the meaning of the additional fields introduced by Martin, Siggia and Rose in their functional formalism. We show that the transition amplitude, in this case, is the generating functional for correlation functions. We work out explicitly the correlation functions for the Markovian process of the Brownian motion of a free partic…
Fluctuation theorems based on time-reversal have provided remarkable insight into the non-equilibrium statistics of thermodynamic quantities like heat, work, and entropy production. These types of laws impose constraints on the distributions of certain trajectory functionals that reflect underlying dynamical symmetries. In this work, we introduce a detailed fluctuation theorem for Langevin dynamics that follows from the statistics of Gaussian white noise rather than from time-reversal. The theorem, which originates from a point-wise symmetry in phase space, holds individually for each degree o…
A theoretical investigation of magnetic relaxation processes in single domain particles driven by colored noise is presented. Two approaches are considered; the Landau-Lifshitz-Miyazaki-Seki equation, which is a Langevin dynamics model based on the introduction of an Ornstein-Uhlenbeck correlated noise into the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation and a Generalized Master Equation approach whereby the ordinary Master Equation is modified through the introduction of an explicit memory kernel. It is found that colored noise is likely to become important for high anisotropy materials where the charac…
The behavior of the most probable values of the order parameter $x$ and the amplitude $ϕ$ of conjugate force fluctuations is studied for a stochastic system with a colored multiplicative noise with absorbing states. The phase diagrams introduced as dependencies the noise self-correlation time vs temperature and noise growth velocity are defined. It is shown that phase half-plane $(x,ϕ)$ can be split into isolated domains of large, intermediate, and small values of $x$. System behavior in these domains is studied by the probability represented as path integral. In the region $x\ll 1$, the traje…
The generalized Langevin equation describes anomalous dynamics. Noise is not only the origin of uncertainty but also plays a positive role in helping to detect signal with information, termed stochastic resonance (SR). This paper analyzes the anomalous resonant behaviors of the generalized Langevin system with a multiplicative dichotomous noise and an internal tempered Mittag-Leffler noise. For the system with fluctuating harmonic potential, we obtain the exact expressions of several SR, such as, the first moment, the amplitude and the autocorrelation function for the output signal as well as …
