The Langevin equation with a multiplicative Lévy white noise is solved. The noise amplitude and the drift coefficient have a power-law form. A validity of ordinary rules of the calculus for the Stratonovich interpretation is discussed. The solution has the algebraic asymptotic form and the variance may assume a finite value for the case of the Stratonovich interpretation. The problem of escaping from a potential well is analysed numerically; predictions of different interpretations of the stochastic integral are compared.
The stochastic differential equation $\dot{x}(t) = ax(t) + bx(t-τ) + c x(t) ξ(t)$ with a time-delayed feedback and a multiplicative Gaussian noise is shown to be related to Kardar-Parisi-Zhang universality class of growing surfaces.
We analyze the effect of the simultaneous presence of correlated additive and multiplicative noises on the stochastic resonance response of a modulated bistable system. We find that when the correlation parameter is also modulated, the system's response, measured through the output signal-to-noise ratio, becomes largely independent of the additive noise intensity.
Agreement of the probability current with the resolving paths requires a simplified forward equation for the (unique) Ito paths. Their increments are the most probable rather than expected ones, in accordance with an existing extremum principle. The latter is also generalized.
We demonstrate that the conventional path integral formulations generate inconsistent results exemplified by the geometric Brownian motion under the general stochastic interpretation. We thus develop a novel path integral formulation for the overdamped Langevin equation with the multiplicative noise. The present path integral leads to the corresponding Fokker-Planck equation, and naturally gives a normalized transition probability consistently in examples for general stochastic interpretations. Our result can be applied to study the fluctuation theorems and numerical calculations based on the …
Analytical and numerical studies on many-body stochastic processes with multiplicative interactions are reviewed. The method of moment relations is used to investigate effects of asymmetry and randomness in interactions. Probability distribution functions of the processes generally have similarity solutions with power-law tails. Growth rates of the system and power-law exponents of the tails are determined via transcendental equations. Good agreement is achieved between analytical calculations and Monte Carlo simulations.
We present a supersymmetric formulation of Markov processes, represented by a family of Langevin equations with multiplicative white-noise. The hidden symmetry encodes equilibrium properties such as fluctuation-dissipation relations. The formulation does not depend on the particular prescription to define the Wiener integral. In this way, different equilibrium distributions, reached at long times for each prescription, can be formally treated on the same footing.
We present a new method to renormalize stochastic differential equations subjected to multiplicative noise. The method is based on the widely used concept of effective potential in high energy physics, and has already been successfully applied to the renormalization of stochastic differential equations subjected to additive noise. We derive a general formula for the one-loop effective potential of a single ordinary stochastic differential equation (with arbitrary interaction terms) subjected to multiplicative Gaussian noise (provided the noise satisfies a certain normalization condition). To i…
We present a functional formalism to derive a generating functional for correlation functions of a multiplicative stochastic process represented by a Langevin equation. We deduce a path integral over a set of fermionic and bosonic variables without performing any time discretization. The usual prescriptions to define the Wiener integral appear in our formalism in the definition of Green functions in the Grassman sector of the theory. We also study non-perturbative constraints imposed by BRS symmetry and supersymmetry on correlation functions. We show that the specific prescription to define th…
Nonlinear diffusion is studied in the presence of multiplicative noise. The nonlinearity can be viewed as a ``wall'' limiting the motion of the diffusing field. A dynamic phase transition occurs when the system ``unbinds'' from the wall. Two different universality classes, corresponding to the cases of an ``upper'' and a ``lower'' wall, are identified and their critical properties are characterized. While the lower wall problem can be understood by applying the knowledge of linear diffusion with multiplicative noise, the upper wall problem exhibits an anomaly due to nontrivial dynamics in the …
We study pattern formation processes in anisotropic system governed by the Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation with multiplicative noise as a generalization of the Bradley-Harper model for ripple formation induced by ion bombardment. For both linear and nonlinear systems we study noise induced effects at ripple formation and discuss scaling behavior of the surface growth and roughness characteristics. It was found that the secondary parameters of the ion beam (beam profile and variations of an incidence angle) can crucially change the topology of patterns and the corresponding dynamics.
Multiplicative white-noise stochastic processes continuously attract the attention of a wide area of scientific research. The variety of prescriptions available to define it difficults the development of general tools for its characterization. In this work, we study equilibrium properties of Markovian multiplicative white-noise processes. For this, we define the time reversal transformation for this kind of processes, taking into account that the asymptotic stationary probability distribution depends on the prescription. Representing the stochastic process in a functional Grassman formalism, w…
Stochastic bistable systems whose stationary distributions belong to the q-exponential family are investigated using two approaches: (i) the Langevin model subjected to additive and quadratic multiplicative noise, and (ii) the superstatistical model. Previously, the bistable Langevin model has been analyzed under linear multiplicative noise, whereas this paper reports on quadratic multiplicative noise, which is more physically meaningful. The stationary distribution of the Langevin model under quadratic multiplicative noise, which agrees with that derived by the maximum Tsallis entropy method,…
Discrete multiplicative turbulent cascades are described using a formalism involving infinitely divisible random measures. This permits to consider the continuous limit of a cascade developed on a continuum of scales, and to provide the stochastic equations defining such processes, involving infinitely divisible stochastic integrals. Causal evolution laws are also given. This gives the first general stochastic equations which generate continuous multifractal measures or processes.
Stock price change in financial market occurs through transactions in analogy with diffusion in stochastic physical systems. The analysis of price changes in real markets shows that long-range correlations of price fluctuations largely depend on the number of transactions. We introduce the multiplicative stochastic model of time interval between trades and analyze spectral density and correlations of the number of transactions. The model reproduces spectral properties of the real markets and explains the mechanism of power law distribution of trading activity. Our study provides an evidence th…
We study a stochastic multiplicative system composed of finite asynchronous elements to describe the wealth evolution in financial markets. We find that the wealth fluctuations or returns of this system can be described by a walk with correlated step sizes obeying truncated Levy-like distribution, and the cross-correlation between relative updated wealths is the origin of the nontrivial properties of returns, including the power law distribution with exponent outside the stable Levy regime and the long-range persistence of volatility correlations.
We have studied the dynamical properties of finite $N$-unit FitzHugh-Nagumo (FN) ensembles subjected to additive and/or multiplicative noises, reformulating the augmented moment method (AMM) with the Fokker-Planck equation (FPE) method [H. Hasegawa, J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. {\bf 75}, 033001 (2006)]. In the AMM, original $2N$-dimensional stochastic equations are transformed to eight-dimensional deterministic ones, and the dynamics is described in terms of averages and fluctuations of local and global variables. The stochastic bifurcation is discussed by a linear stability analysis of the {\it determi…
We investigate a generalized stochastic model with the property known as mean reversion, that is, the tendency to relax towards a historical reference level. Besides this property, the dynamics is driven by multiplicative and additive Wiener processes. While the former is modulated by the internal behavior of the system, the latter is purely exogenous. We focus on the stochastic dynamics of volatilities, but our model may also be suitable for other financial random variables exhibiting the mean reversion property. The generalized model contains, as particular cases, many early approaches in th…
