Zero and longitudinal field muon spin rotation (muSR) experiments were performed on the superconductors PrPt4Ge12 and LaPt4Ge12. In PrPt4Ge12 below Tc a spontaneous magnetization with a temperature variation resembling that of the superfluid density appears. This observation implies time-reversal symmetry (TRS) breaking in PrPt4Ge12 below Tc = 7.9 K. This remarkably high Tc for an anomalous superconductor and the weak and gradual change of Tc and of the related specific heat anomaly upon La substitution in La_(1-x)Pr_xPt_4Ge_(12) suggests that the TRS breaking is due to orbital degrees of freedom of the Cooper pairs.
We study magnetization reversal in a $φ_0$ Josephson junction with direct coupling between magnetic moment and Josephson current. Our simulations of magnetic moment dynamics show that by applying an electric current pulse, we can realize the full magnetization reversal. We propose different protocols of full magnetization reversal based on the variation of the Josephson junction and pulse parameters, particularly, electric current pulse amplitude, damping of magnetization and spin-orbit interaction. We discuss experiments which can probe the magnetization reversal in $φ_0$-junctions.
We propose a mechanism that helps stabilize a superconducting state with broken time-reversal symmetry, which was predicted to realize in a d-wave superconducting film [A. B. Vorontsov, Phys. Rev. Lett. 102, 177001 (2009)]. In this superconducting phase, the time-reversal symmetry breaking is accompanied by spontaneous breaking of the translation symmetry along the film surface. We examine how the normal-superconducting phase boundary in the thickness-temperature phase diagram of the film is modified depending on the Fermi surface shape. In particular, the nonuniform superconducting phase is f…
We discuss the phase diagram and phase transitions in $U(1)\times \groupZ{2}$ three-band superconductors with broken time reversal symmetry. We find that beyond mean field approximation and for sufficiently strong frustration of interband interactions there appears an unusual metallic state precursory to a superconducting phase transition. In that state, the system is not superconducting. Nonetheless, it features a spontaneously broken $\groupZ{2}$ time reversal symmetry. By contrast, for weak frustration of interband coupling the energy of a domain wall between different $\groupZ{2}$ states i…
Elemental rhenium exhibiting type-II superconductivity has been previously reported to break time-reversal symmetry in the superconducting state. We have investigated an arc-melted sample of rhenium exhibiting type-I superconductivity. Low temperature zero-field muon-spin relaxation measurements indicate that time-reversal symmetry is preserved in the superconducting state. Muon diffusion is observed, which is due to quantum mechanical tunneling between interstitial sites. The normal state behavior is characterized by the conduction electrons screening the muons and thermal broadening, and is …
Comment on "High Resolution Polar Effect Measurements of Sr2RuO4: Evidence for Broken Time-Reversal Symmetry in the Superconducting State" by J. Xia et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 97, 167002 (2006).
Polar Kerr effect in the spin-triplet superconductor Sr2RuO4 was measured with high precision using a Sagnac interferometer with a zero-area Sagnac loop. We observed non-zero Kerr rotations as big as 65 nanorad appearing below Tc in large domains. Our results imply a broken time reversal symmetry state in the superconducting state of Sr2RuO4, similar to He3-A.
The antisymmetrised two-electron functions are constructed for the point group T$_{h}$, i.e. the symmetry group of unconventional superconductor PrOs$% _{4}$Sb$_{14}$., and its subgroup D$_{2h}$.The nodal structure of these function depending on the wavevector group is investigated. Theoretical nodal structure of these functions made possible to explain the experimental nodal structure PrOs$_{4}$Sb$_{14}$. as a result of time-reversal symmetry violation.
In this paper we study the order parameter and density of states near a grain boundary between two $d_{x^2-y^2}$ superconductors. We examine broken time reversal symmetry near the interface. In particular we show that, under suitable circumstances, time reversal symmetry must be broken even when the order parameter is purely $d_{x^2-y^2}$ everywhere in space.
Recent experimental and theoretical interest in the superconducting phase of the heavy fermion material URu$_2$Si$_2$ has led to a number of proposals in which the superconducting order parameter breaks time-reversal symmetry (TRS). In this study we measured polar Kerr effect (PKE) as a function of temperature for several high-quality single crystals of URu$_2$Si$_2$. We find an onset of PKE below the superconducting transition that is consistent with a TRS-breaking order parameter. This effect appears to be independent of an additional, possibly extrinsic, PKE generated above the hidden order…
We consider a Rashba spin-orbit coupled nanowire with anisotropic spin-singlet superconducting pairing and time-reversal-invariant symmetry. We explore the evolution of the topological superconducting phases of this system due to geometric deformations for the representative case of a wire bent in a semielliptical shape. We find that when the system is in its topological superconducting phase, strong inhomogeneities in the profile curvature can produce a pair of localized eigenmodes, which can be attributed to a nonuniform topological phase. The curved geometric profile also allows to tune the…
We demonstrate that films of unconventional (d-wave) superconductor at temperatures $T\lesssim 0.43 T_c$ can exhibit unusual superconducting phases. The new ground states beside the broken gauge and the point group symmetries can spontaneously break (i) continuous translational symmetry and form periodic order parameter structures in the plane of the film, or (ii) time-reversal symmetry and develop supercurrent flowing along the film. These states are result of the strong transverse inhomogeniety present in films with thickness of several coherence lengths. We show a natural similarity between…
Odd-frequency superconductivity describes a class of superconducting states where the superconducting gap is an odd function in relative time and Matsubara frequency. We present a group theoretical analysis based on the linearized gap equation in terms of Shubnikov groups of the second kind. By discussing systems with spin-orbit coupling and an interaction kernel which is symmetric under the reversal of relative time, we show that both even- and odd-frequency gaps are allowed to occur. Specific examples are discussed for the square lattice, the octahedral lattice, and the tetragonal lattice. F…
We solve the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations self-consistently for d-wave superconductors with [110] surfaces. We find spontaneous breaking of time-reversal symmetry (TRS) caused by the spontaneous occurrence of a complex order parameter with an extended s-wave symmetry along the [110] surfaces. In the TRS-breaking phase, the d-wave order parameter itself becomes complex. We also show that vortex-antivortex pairs can appear along the [110] surfaces of nanoribbons. These pairs are detectable with surface sensitive probes.
We investigate the nature of the time-reversal breaking pairing state in the hole-doped monolayer MoS$_{2}$ on the basis of the realistic three-orbital attractive Hubbard-like model with the atomic spin-orbit coupling. Due to the multi-band features arising from the Mo $d$ orbitals in the noncentrosymmetric crystal structure, the Lifshitz transition takes place upon hole doping. Across the Lifshitz transition point, the sign of the relative phase between the Cooper-pair components drastically changes, leading to the emergence of the time-reversal breaking phase with complex gap functions. It i…
We consider different effects that arise when time-reversal symmetry breaking superconductors are subjected to an external magnetic field, thus rendering the superconductor to be in the mixed state. We focus in particular on two time-reversal symmetry breaking order parameters which are believed to be realized in actual materials: $p+ıp'$-wave and $d+ıs$- or $d+ıd'$-wave. The first order parameter is relevant for Sr$_2$RuO$_4$, while the latter order parameters have been suggested to exist near surfaces in some of the high-$T_c$ cuprates. We investigate the interplay between surface states and…
We report the results of a zero-field muon spin relaxation (ZF-muSR) study of superconducting Ba1-xKxFe2As2 (0.5 < x < 0.9) in search of weak spontaneous internal magnetic fields associated with proposed time-reversal-symmetry breaking mixed pairing states. The measurements were performed on polycrystalline samples, which do not exhibit the mesoscopic phase separation previously observed in single crystals of Ba1-xKxFe2As2. No evidence of spontaneous internal magnetic fields is found in any of the samples at temperatures down to T ~ 0.02 K.
We have studied the electronic properties of ScS, a transition-metal monochalcogenide with rocksalt crystal structure, using magnetization, specific heat, transport, and muon spin rotation/relaxation ($μ$SR) measurements. All measurements confirm the bulk superconducting in ScS with a transition temperature of $T_{C}$ = 5.1(5) K. Specific heat together with transverse-field $μ$SR measurements indicate a full gap, while our zero-field $μ$SR study reveals the presence of spontaneous static or quasi-static magnetic fields emerging when entering the superconducting state. We discuss various possib…
We have investigated the superconducting state of the noncentrosymmetric superconductor Re6Ti (Tc = 6.0 K) using muon-spin rotation/relaxation (muSR) technique. The zero-field muon experiment shows the presence of spontaneous magnetic fields in the superconducting state, indicating time-reversal symmetry breaking (TRSB). However, the low-temperature transverse field muon measurements suggest nodeless s-wave superconductivity. The time reversal symmetry breaking further confirmed in the stoichiometric composition Re24Ti5. These results indicate that the pairing symmetry is not affected by spin-…
Noncentrosymmetric superconductors have sparked significant research interests due to their exciting properties, such as the admixture of spin-singlet and spin-triplet Cooper pairs. Here we report $μ$SR and thermodynamic measurements on the noncentrosymmetric superconductor La7Rh3 which indicate a fully established superconducting gap and spontaneous time-reversal-symmetry breaking at the onset of superconductivity. We show that our results pose severe constraints on any microscopic theory of superconductivity in the system. A symmetry analysis identifies ground states compatible with time-rev…
A topological argument is presented for nodal structures of superconducting states with time-reversal invariance. A generic Hamiltonian which describes a quasiparticle in superconducting states with time-reversal invariance is derived, and it is shown that only line nodes are topologically stable in single-band descriptions of superconductivity. Using the time-reversal symmetry, we introduce a real structure and define topological numbers of line nodes. Stability of line nodes is ensured by conservation of the topological numbers. Line nodes in high-Tc materials, the polar state in p-wave pari…
The discovery of new families of unconventional superconductors is important both experimentally and theoretically, especially if it challenges current models and thinking. By using muon spin relaxation in zero-field, time-reversal symmetry breaking has been observed in Re6Hf. Moreover, the temperature dependence of the superfluid density exhibits s-wave superconductivity with an enhanced electron-phonon coupling. This, coupled with the results from isostructural Re6Zr, shows that the Re6X family are indeed a new and important group of unconventional superconductors.
We have measured the field dependence of the Zero Bias Conductance Peak (ZBCP) of tunnel junctions prepared on (110) oriented Y1Ba2Cu3O7-d films of various thickness. We have found that the field splitting of the ZBCP, believed to be due to the Time Reversal Symmetry Breaking (TRSB) of Andreev surface bound states, is independent of film thickness. This rules out that Meissner screening currents are at the origin of TRSB. We conclude that TRSB must, instead, be due to a field-induced modification of the Order parameter. Different possibilities involving an imaginary component are discussed.
Recently, a theoretical study [Li {\it et al.},~npj Quantum Materials 6, 36 (2021)] investigated a model of a disordered $d$-wave superconductor, and reported local time-reversal symmetry breaking current loops for sufficiently high disorder levels. Since the pure $d$-wave superconducting state does not break time-reversal symmetry, it is surprising that such persistent currents arise purely from nonmagnetic disorder. Here we perform a detailed theoretical investigation of such disorder-induced orbital currents, and show that the occurrence of the currents can be traced to local extended $s$-w…
We propose a superconducting instability where microscopic supercurrent loops form spontaneously within a unit cell at the superconducting transition temperature with only uniform, onsite and intra-orbital singlet pairing. As a result of the circulating currents time-reversal symmetry is spontaneously broken in the superconducting state. Using Ginzburg-Landau theory, we describe in detail how these currents emerge in a toy model. We discuss the crystallographic symmetry requirements to realize such a state and show that they are met by the Re6X (X=Zr, Hf, Ti) family of time-reversal symmetry b…
We have performed zero-field muon spin rotation measurements on single crystals of La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4} to search for spontaneous currents in the pseudo-gap state. By comparing measurements on materials across the phase diagram, we put strict upper limits on any possible time-reversal symmetry breaking fields that could be associated with the pseudo-gap. Comparison between experimental limits and proposed circulating current states effectively eliminates the possibility that such states exist in this family of materials.
We study the impurity effect in the time reversal symmetry (${\cal T}$) breaking superconductor based on the Bogoliubov-de Gennes (BdG) equations. In ${\cal T}$-violating superconductors, spontaneous currents are induced around the impurity. The current patterns around the impurity reflect the structures of the Cooper pairs. We investigate impurity problem numerically for two kinds of ${\cal T}$ violating superconductors $(p_{x}\pm {\rm i}p_{y}$ and $d+{\rm i}s)$ and investigate the currents around the impurity. We also study the effects of the magnetic impurity in p-wave ($p_{x}\pm {\rm i}p_{…
We study the physical properties of an $s$-wave -- normal metal -- $d$-wave junction in terms of the Andreev bound states in the normal metal layer. The phase dependence of bound states with different orientations leads to superconducting states with broken time reversal symmetry for generic orientations of the $d$-wave superconductor crystal. The occurrence of such a state and the associated spontaneous supercurrent along the junction is analyzed in the framework of Ginzburg-Landau theory and by the solution of the Bogolyubov-de Gennes equations.
We consider mixed symmetry superconducting phases in Dirac materials in the odd parity channel, where pseudoscalar and vector order parameters can coexist due to their similar critical temperatures when attractive interactions are of finite range. We show that the coupling of these order parameters to unordered magnetic dopants favors the condensation of novel time-reversal symmetry breaking (TRSB) phases, characterized by a condensate magnetization, rotation symmetry breaking, and simultaneous ordering of the dopant moments. We find a rich phase diagram of mixed TRSB phases characterized by p…
The results from muon spin relaxation experiments on the non-centrosymmetric intermetallic superconductor LaNiC$_2$ are reported. We find that the onset of superconductivity coincides with the appearance of spontaneous magnetic fields, implying that in the superconducting state time reversal symmetry is broken. An analysis of the possible pairing symmetries suggests only four triplet states compatible with this observation, all of which are non-unitary. They include the intriguing possibility of triplet pairing with the full point group symmetry of the crystal, which is only possible in a non-…
We investigate the competition between the extended $s_{\pm}$-wave and $d_{x^2-y^2}$-wave pairing order parameters in the iron-based superconductors. Because of the frustrating pairing interactions among the electron and the hole fermi pockets, a time reversal symmetry breaking $s+id$ pairing state could be favored. We analyze this pairing state within the Ginzburg-Landau theory, and explore the experimental consequences. In such a state, spatial inhomogeneity induces supercurrent near a non-magnetic impurity and the corners of a square sample. The resonance mode between the $s_{\pm}$ and $d_{…
We report point contact Andreev Reflection (PCAR) measurements on a high-quality single crystal of the non-centrosymmetric superconductor Re6Zr. We observe that the PCAR spectra can be fitted by taking two isotropic superconducting gaps with Delta_1 ~ 0.79 meV and Delta_2 ~ 0.22 meV respectively, suggesting that there are at least two bands which contribute to superconductivity. Combined with the observation of time reversal symmetry breaking at the superconducting transition from muon spin relaxation measurements (Phys. Rev. Lett. 112, 107002 (2014)), our results imply an unconventional super…
It is argued that the $d_{x^2-y^2}$ superconductor exhibits the transition into $d_{x^2-y^2} + id_{xy}$ state in the presence of magnetic impurities in certain conditions. Linear coupling between impurity magnetization and the $d_{xy}$ component drives this transition. Violation of time-reversal symmetry and parity occurs spontaneously via the second order transition. In the ordered phase both impurity magnetization and $d_{xy}$ component of the order parameter develop and are proportional to each other.
At a (110) surface of a $d_{x^2-y-2}$-wave superconductor, superconducting order is strongly suppressed. In such a situation, ordered states that are forbidden in the bulk may arise. This problem is studied for high-$T_C$ cuprate superconductors by treating the $t-J$ model with extended transfer integrals using the Bogoliubov de Gennes method. It is found that a flux phase with staggered currents along the surface, or an antiferromagnetic state can occur near the surface. Stability of the emergent surface states is different from system to system depending on the shapes of their Fermi surfaces…
Recently, Kaminski et al. have reported that time reversal symmetry is broken in the pseudogap phase in the high temperature superconducting material Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_{2+δ} (Bi-2212). Here we examine the role of translationally invariant broken time reversal states on d_{x^2-y^2} superconductors. In particular, we determine the change in the superconducting order parameter structure. We find that the broken time reversal pseudogap state that is consistent with the experiment of Kaminski et al., gives rise to a novel mixed singlet-triplet pairing d+ip phase. This d+ip state is shown to give rise…
Competition between the vortex lattice and a lattice of asymmetric artificial defects is shown to play a crucial role in ratchet experiments in superconducting films. We present a novel and collective mechanism for current reversal based on a reconfiguration of the vortex lattice. In contrast to previous models of vortex current reversal, the mechanism is based on the global response of the vortex lattice to external forces.
The space-group approach to the wavefunction of a Cooper pair is extended to Shubnikov groups of type III and applied to newly discovered nearly ferromagnetic superconductor UTe2. A nonunitary triplet SOP (superconducting order parameter), manifested experimentally, was obtained for Shubnikov group m'm'm . The nodal structure of triplet nonunitary SOP is investigated and it was shown that in the case of Shubnikov III symmetry nodal structure of ESP (equal spin pairing) state is in some cases unstable, i.e. changes when a complex phase winding is added. The irreducible corepresentations of a Co…
We show that superconductors with broken time-reversal symmetry have very specific magnetic and electric responses to inhomogeneous heating. A local heating of such superconductors induces a magnetic field with a profile that is sensitive to the presence of domain walls and crystalline anisotropy of superconducting states. A nonstationary heating process produces an electric field and a charge imbalance in different bands. These effects can be measured and used to distinguish $s+is$ and $s+id$ superconducting states in the candidate materials such as Ba$_{1-x}$K$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$.
The time-reversal and parity violating superconducting(SC) phase of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 induced by a magnetic field (B), reported by Krishana et al[K. Krishana et al, Science 277, 83 (1997)] over the limited field range of 0.6T < B < 5T, is examined starting with the model free-energy functional predicted by Laughlin [R. B. Laughlin, Physica C 234, 280 (1994)]. On the basis of entropy considerations we show that the passage from the normal to this field-driven SC state at a non-zero temperatures (T) is possible if kBT \leq Δ0 where the zero-temperature gap \Delta0 ~ \hbarv/lB, v is the root-mean-squ…
We present a systematic investigation of muon-stopping states in superconductors that reportedly exhibit spontaneous magnetic fields below their transition temperatures due to time-reversal symmetry breaking. These materials include elemental rhenium, several intermetallic systems and Sr$_2$RuO$_4$. We demonstrate that the presence of the muon leads to only a limited and relatively localized perturbation to the local crystal structure, while any small changes to the electronic structure occur several electron volts below the Fermi energy leading to only minimal changes in the charge density on…
URu$_2$Si$_2$ is claimed to be a chiral \emph{d}-wave superconductor with a $k_z (k_x \pm ik_y)$ time-reversal symmetry broken orbital component for the Cooper pair wave-function, which contains both nodal points and lines of nodes \cite{kasahara, kasahara2}. To study the magnetic response of such an unconventional state through a bulk, thermodynamic probe, we measured the magnetic torque $τ$ in very high-quality, well-characterized URu$_2$Si$_2$ single-crystals \cite{altarawneh,altarawneh2} at high magnetic-fields $H$ and at very low temperatures $T$. The magnetization $M(H) \propto τ(H) /H$ …
We report results of zero-field muon spin relaxation experiments on the filled-skutterudite superconductors~Pr$_{1-x}$Ce$_{x}$Pt$_4$Ge$_{12}$, $x = 0$, 0.07, 0.1, and 0.2, to investigate the effect of Ce doping on broken time-reversal symmetry (TRS) in the superconducting state. In these alloys broken TRS is signaled by the onset of a spontaneous static local magnetic field~$B_s$ below the superconducting transition temperature. We find that $B_s$ decreases linearly with $x$ and $\to 0$ at $x \approx 0.4$, close to the concentration above which superconductivity is no longer observed. The (Pr,…
We consider a buckled quantum spin Hall insulator (QSHI), such as silicene, proximity-coupled to a conventional spin-singlet, s-wave superconductor. Even limiting the discussion to the disorder-robust s-wave pairing symmetry, we find both odd-frequency ($ω$), spin-singlet and spin-triplet pair amplitudes and where both preserve time-reversal symmetry. Our results show that there are two unrelated mechanisms generating these different odd-$ω$ pair amplitudes. The spin-singlet state is due to the strong inter-orbital processes present in the QSHI. It is exists generically at the edges of the QSH…
We have studied the Zero Bias Conductance Peak (ZBCP) of the tunneling conductance measured on (1,1,0) oriented Y(1-y)Ca(y)Ba(2)Cu(3)O(7-x) thin films as a function of doping and of magnetic field. A spontaneous (zero field) split of the ZBCP was observed only in overdoped samples (either by O or by Ca). The magnitude of this split was found to be linear in doping. All samples exhibited a magnetic field splitting, also strongly doping dependent. The field susceptibility chi=d(delta)/dH diverges at the point at which spontaneous ZBCP splitting occurs, its inverse value, chi^(-1), following a li…

We present a study of the basic microscopic model of an $s$-wave superconductor with frustrated interband interaction. When frustration is strong, such an interaction gives raise to a $s+is$ state. This is a $s$-wave superconductor that spontaneously breaks time reversal symmetry. We show that, in addition to the known $s+is$ state, there is additional phase, where the system's bulk is a conventional $s$-wave state, but superconducting surface states break time reversal symmetry. Furthermore, we show that $s+is$ superconductors can have spontaneous boundary currents and spontaneous magnetic fi…
Superconductors with broken time-reversal symmetry represent arguably one of the most promising venues for realizing highly sought-after topological superconductivity that is vital to fault-tolerant quantum computation. Here, by using extensive muon-spin relaxation and rotation measurements, we report that the isostructural silicide superconductors (Ta, Nb)OsSi spontaneously break time-reversal symmetry at the superconducting transition while surprisingly showing a fully-gapped superconductivity characteristic of conventional superconductors. The first-principles calculations show that (Ta, Nb…
We discuss superconductivity in a model on a cubic lattice for a $Γ_3$ non-Kramers system. In previous studies, it is revealed that $d$-wave superconductivity with $E_g$ symmetry occurs in a wide parameter range in a $Γ_3$ system. Such anisotropic superconductivity can break the cubic symmetry of the lattice. In a $Γ_3$ system, the quadrupole degrees of freedom are active and the effect of the cubic symmetry breaking should be important. Here, we investigate the coexisting states of the $d$-wave superconductivity and quadrupole order by a mean-field theory. In particular, we discuss possible c…
In many unconventional superconductors, the pairing of electrons is driven by the repulsive interaction, which leads to the sign reversal of superconducting gaps along the Fermi surfaces (FS) or between them. However, to measure this sign change is not easy and straightforward. It is known that, in superconductors with sign reversal gaps, non-magnetic impurities can break Cooper pairs leading to the quasiparticle density of states in the superconducting state. The standing waves of these quasiparticles will interfere each other leading to the quasiparticle interference (QPI) pattern which carr…
Epitaxial bilayer films of Bi(110) and Ni host a time-reversal symmetry (TRS) breaking superconducting order with an unexpectedly high transition temperature $T_c = 4.1$ K. Using time-domain THz spectroscopy, we measure the low energy electrodynamic response of a Bi/Ni bilayer thin film from $0.2$ THz to $2$ THz as a function of temperature and magnetic field. We analyze the data in the context of a BCS-like superconductor with a finite normal-state scattering rate. In zero magnetic field, all states in the film become fully gapped, providing important constraints into possible pairing symmetr…
The superconducting state of the filled skutterudite alloy series Pr$_{1-x}$La$_{x}$Pt$_{4}$Ge$_{12}$ has been systematically studied by specific heat, zero-field muon spin relaxation ($μ$SR), and superconducting critical field measurements. An additional inhomogeneous local magnetic field, indicative of broken time-reversal symmetry (TRS), is observed in the superconducting states of the alloys. For $x \lesssim 0.5$ the broken-TRS phase sets in below a temperature $T_m$ distinctly lower than the superconducting transition temperature $T_c$. For $x \gtrsim 0.5$ $T_m \approx T_c$. The local fie…
Three-dimensional line-nodal superconductors exhibit nontrivial topology, which is protected by the time-reversal symmetry. Here we investigate four types of short-range interaction between the gapless line-nodal fermionic quasiparticles by carrying renormalization group analysis. We find that such interactions can induce the dynamical breaking of time-reversal symmetry, which alters the topology and might lead to six possible distinct superconducting states, distinguished by the group representations. After computing the susceptibilities for all the possible phase-transition instabilities, we…
We study spontaneous time-reversal symmetry breaking at Josephson tunnel junctions of d-wave superconductors in the absence of subdominant components of the order parameter. For tunnel junctions, when the orientation is close to 0/45 (for which a gap lobe points towards the junction on one side and a gap node on the other), the mechanism of the symmetry breaking is the splitting of midgap states (MGS) by spontaneous establishment of a phase difference $ϕ=\pm π/2$ across the junction. This occurs for transparencies $D\ggξ_0/λ$ and temperatures $k_BT\ll DΔ_0$, where $ξ_0$ is the coherence length…
One of the mysteries of modern condenced-matter physics is the nature of the pseudogap state of the superconducting cuprates. Kaminski et al.1 claimed to have observed signatures of time-reversal symmetry breaking in the pseudogap regime in underdoped Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d (Bi2212). Here we argue that the observed dichroism is due to the 5x1 superstructure replica of the electronic bands and therefore cannot be considered as evidence for the spontaneous time-reversal symmetry breaking in cuprates.
We study the behavior of spinless fermions in superconducting state, in which the phases of the superconducting order parameter depend on the direction of the link. We find that the energy of the superconductor depends on the phase differences of the superconducting order parameter. The solutions for the phases corresponding to the energy minimuma, lead to a topological superconducting state with the nontrivial Chern numbers. We focus our quantitative analysis on the properties of topological states of superconductors with different crystalline symmetry and show that the phase transition in th…
