We discuss the phase diagram and phase transitions in $U(1)\times \groupZ{2}$ three-band superconductors with broken time reversal symmetry. We find that beyond mean field approximation and for sufficiently strong frustration of interband interactions there appears an unusual metallic state precursory to a superconducting phase transition. In that state, the system is not superconducting. Nonetheless, it features a spontaneously broken $\groupZ{2}$ time reversal symmetry. By contrast, for weak frustration of interband coupling the energy of a domain wall between different $\groupZ{2}$ states is low and thus fluctuations restore broken time reversal symmetry in the superconducting state at low temperatures.
Geometrical frustration leads to novel quantum phenomena such as the spin-liquid phase in triangular and Kagomé lattices. Intra-band and inter-band Fermi surface (FS) nesting can drive unique superconducting (SC) ground states with $d$-wave and $s^{\pm}$ pairing symmetries, respectively, according to the criterion that the SC gap changes sign across the nesting wavevector. For an odd number of FSs, when multiple inter-band nesting is of comparable strength, the sign-reversal criterion between different FS sheets can leads to frustration, which promotes novel SC order parameters. Here we report…
We present a study of the basic microscopic model of an $s$-wave superconductor with frustrated interband interaction. When frustration is strong, such an interaction gives raise to a $s+is$ state. This is a $s$-wave superconductor that spontaneously breaks time reversal symmetry. We show that, in addition to the known $s+is$ state, there is additional phase, where the system's bulk is a conventional $s$-wave state, but superconducting surface states break time reversal symmetry. Furthermore, we show that $s+is$ superconductors can have spontaneous boundary currents and spontaneous magnetic fi…
Recent mean-field calculations suggest that the superconducting state of twisted bilayer graphene exhibits either a nematic order or a spontaneous breakdown of the time-reversal symmetry. The two-dimensional character of the material and the large critical temperature relative to the Fermi energy dictate that the material should have significant fluctuations. We study the effects of these fluctuations using Monte Carlo simulations. We show that in a model proposed earlier for twisted bilayer graphene there is a fluctuation-induced phase with quadrupling fermionic order for all considered param…
We study the Higgs mode in a Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) superconductor. Motivated by the observation that U(1) symmetry of the BCS Hamiltonian is not essential for the Higgs mode, we study the Ising-like Hamiltonian in the pseudospin representation. We show that the Higgs mode emerges as the lowest excited state of the Ising-like Hamiltonian due to spontaneous breakdown of $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry under the time-reversal operation $\mathcal T$ in the pseudospin space. We further predict the existence of multiple Higgs modes that have quantized energy $2(n+1)Δ_0$ ($0\le n\le N_{k_F}$), wher…
We determine the current-phase relation (CPR) of two-terminal configurations of Josephson junctions containing two-dimensional (2D) time-reversal invariant topological superconductors (TRITOPS), including TRITOPS-TRITOPS, as well as junctions between topological and non-topological superconductors (TRITOPS-S). We focus on long junctions for which several channels intervene in the tunneling coupling through the junction. We present a description of the topological edge modes for different TRITOPS models including $p$-wave pairing and the combination of $s$-wave pairing with spin-orbit coupling.…
