The results from muon spin relaxation experiments on the non-centrosymmetric intermetallic superconductor LaNiC$_2$ are reported. We find that the onset of superconductivity coincides with the appearance of spontaneous magnetic fields, implying that in the superconducting state time reversal symmetry is broken. An analysis of the possible pairing symmetries suggests only four triplet states compatible with this observation, all of which are non-unitary. They include the intriguing possibility of triplet pairing with the full point group symmetry of the crystal, which is only possible in a non-centrosymmetric superconductor.
We report first principles calculations of the electronic structure and electron-phonon coupling in the non-centrosymmetric superconductor LaNiC$_2$. These show that the material is a conventional electron-phonon superconductor with intermediate coupling. There are large contributions to the coupling by two low frequency C non-bond-stretching modes, one of which has strong Kohn anomalies. Since LaNiC$_2$ lacks inversion symmetry, the pairing is of dominant s-wave type with some mixture of p-wave character. This will give exponential decay in the specific heat.
We present a discussion of superconductivity in non-centrosymmetric superconductors with spin-orbit coupling. A general expression for the quasiparticle excitation energy is derived. The superconducting states for the point group C2v are classified by symmetry in the limit of weak spin-orbit coupling. A non-unitary triplet pairing gap function can account for observations of broken time-reversal symmetry and nodes in the superconducting state of LaNiC2; however such a gap function also has a gapless branch and requires vanishing spin-orbit coupling.
We study the superconducting properties of the non-centrosymmetric compound LaNiC$_2$ by measuring the London penetration depth $Δλ(T)$, the specific heat $C(T,B)$ and the electrical resistivity $ρ(T,B)$. Both $Δλ(T)$ and the electronic specific heat $C_e(T)$ exhibit exponential behavior at low temperatures and can be described in terms of a phenomenological two-gap BCS model. The residual Sommerfeld coefficient in the superconducting state, $γ_0(B)$, shows a fast increase at low fields and then an eventual saturation with increasing magnetic field. A pronounced upturn curvature is observed in…
We report a $μ$SR investigation of a non-centrosymmetric superconductor (LaNiC$_2$) in single crystal form. Compared to previous $μ$SR studies of non-centrosymmetric superconducting polycrystalline and powder samples, the unambiguous orientation of single crystals enables a simultaneous determination of the absolute value of the magnetic penetration depth and the vortex core size from measurements that probe the magnetic field distribution in the vortex state. The magnetic field dependence of these quantities unambiguously demonstrates the presence of two nodeless superconducting energy gaps. …
Muon spin rotation and relaxation experiments on the centrosymmetric intermetallic superconductor LaNiGa$_2$ are reported. The appearance of spontaneous magnetic fields coincides with the onset of superconductivity, implying that the superconducting state breaks time reversal symmetry, similarly to non-centrosymmetric LaNiC$_2$. Only four triplet states are compatible with this observation, all of which are non-unitary triplets. This suggests that LaNiGa$_2$ is the centrosymmetric analogue of LaNiC$_2$. We argue that these materials are representatives of a new family of paramagnetic non-unita…
We present a relativistic symmetry analysis of the allowed pairing states in the noncentroymmetric superconductor LaNiC$_2$. The case of zero spin-orbit coupling (SOC) is discussed first and then the evolution of the symmetry-allowed superconducting instabilities as SOC is adiabatically turned on is described. In addition to mixing singlet with triplet pairing, SOC splits some triplet pairing states with degenerate order parameter spaces into non-degenerate pairing states with different critical temperatures. We address the breaking of time-reversal symmetry (TRS) detected in recent muon spin …
The nature of the pairing states of superconducting LaNiC$_2$ and LaNiGa$_2$ has to date remained a puzzling question. Broken time reversal symmetry has been observed in both compounds and a group theoretical analysis implies a non-unitary triplet pairing state. However all the allowed non-unitary triplet states have nodal gap functions but most thermodynamic and NMR measurements indicate fully gapped superconductivity in LaNiC$_2$. Here we probe the gap symmetry of LaNiGa$_2$ by measuring the London penetration depth, specific heat and upper critical field. These measurements demonstrate two-…
We study edge states of non-centrosymmetric superconductors where spin-singlet d-wave pairing mixes with spin-triplet p (or f)-wave one by spin-orbit coupling. For dxy-wave pairing, the obtained Andreev bound state has an anomalous dispersion as compared to conventional helical edge modes. A unique topologically protected time-reversal invariant Majorana fermion appears at the edge. The charge conductance in the non-centrosymmetric superconductor junctions reflects the anomalous structures of the dispersions, particularly the time-reversal invariant Majorana fermion is manifested as a zero bia…
We consider two-dimensional non-centrosymmetric superconductors, where the order parameter is a mixture of s-wave and p-wave parts, in the presence of an externally induced Zeeman splitting. We derive the conditions under which the system is in a non-Abelian phase. By considering the non-degenerate zero-energy Majorana solutions of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes (BdG) equations for a vortex and by constructing a topological invariant, we show that the condition for the non-Abelian phase to exist is completely independent of the triplet pairing amplitude. The existence condition for the non-Abelian p…
Using functional renormalization group method, we study the favorable condition for electronic correlation driven time reversal invariant topological superconductivity in symmetry class DIII. For non-centrosymmetric systems we argue that the proximity to ferromagnetic (or small wavevector magnetic) instability can be used as a guideline for the search of this type of superconductivity. This is analogous to the appearance of singlet unconventional superconductivity in the neighborhood of antiferromagnetic instability. We show three concrete examples where ferromagnetic-like fluctuation leads to…
We study Andreev bound state (ABS) and surface density of state (SDOS) of non-centrosymmetric superconductor where spin-singlet $d$-wave pairing mixes with spin-triplet $p$ (or $f)$-wave one by spin-orbit coupling. For $d_{xy} + p$-wave pairing, ABS appears as a zero energy state. The present ABS is a Majorana edge mode preserving the time reversal symmetry. We calculate topological invariant number and discuss the relevance to a single Majorana edge mode. In the presence of the Majorana edge mode, the SDOS depends strongly on the direction of the Zeeman field.
We have investigated the superconducting state of the non-centrosymmetric compound Re6Zr using magnetization, heat capacity, and muon-spin relaxation/rotation (muSR) measurements. Re6Zr has a superconducting transition temperature, Tc = 6.75 K. Transverse-field muSR experiments, used to probe the superfluid density, suggest an s-wave character for the superconducting gap. However, zero and longitudinal-field muSR data reveal the presence of spontaneous static magnetic fields below Tc indicating that time-reversal symmetry is broken in the superconducting state and an unconventional pairing mec…
We study the spin transport properties of the non-centrosymmetric superconductor with time-reversal-symmetry where spin-triplet $(p_{x} \pm i p_{y})$-wave and spin-singlet s-wave pair potential can mix each other. We show that when the amplitude of $(p_{x} \pm ip_{y})$-wave pair potential is larger than that of s-wave one, the superconducting state belongs to the topologically nontrivial class analogous to the quantum spin Hall system, and the resulting helical edge modes as Andreev bound states are topologically protected. We find that the incident angle dependent spin polarized current flows…
We report non-equilibrium magnetodynamics in the Rashba-superconductor GeTe, which lacks inversion symmetry in the bulk. We find that at low temperature the system exhibits a non-equilibrium state, which decays on time scales that exceed conventional electronic scattering times by many orders of magnitude. This reveals a non-equilibrium magnetoresponse that is asymmetric under magnetic field reversal and, strikingly, induces a non-equilibrium superconducting state distinct from the equilibrium one. We develop a model of a Rashba system where non-equilibrium configurations relax on a finite tim…
To trace the origin of time-reversal symmetry breaking (TRSB) in Re-based superconductors, we performed comparative muon-spin rotation/relaxation ($μ$SR) studies of superconducting noncentrosymmetric Re$_{0.82}$Nb$_{0.18}$ ($T_c = 8.8$ K) and centrosymmetric Re ($T_c = 2.7$ K). In Re$_{0.82}$Nb$_{0.18}$, the low temperature superfluid density and the electronic specific heat evidence a fully-gapped superconducting state, whose enhanced gap magnitude and specific-heat discontinuity suggest a moderately strong electron-phonon coupling. In both Re$_{0.82}$Nb$_{0.18}$ and pure Re, the spontaneous …
We report point contact Andreev Reflection (PCAR) measurements on a high-quality single crystal of the non-centrosymmetric superconductor Re6Zr. We observe that the PCAR spectra can be fitted by taking two isotropic superconducting gaps with Delta_1 ~ 0.79 meV and Delta_2 ~ 0.22 meV respectively, suggesting that there are at least two bands which contribute to superconductivity. Combined with the observation of time reversal symmetry breaking at the superconducting transition from muon spin relaxation measurements (Phys. Rev. Lett. 112, 107002 (2014)), our results imply an unconventional super…
Non-centrosymmetric superconductor Re$_6$Zr has attracted much interest, for its possible unconventional superconducting state with time reversal symmetry broken. Here we report the $^{185/187}$Re nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) measurements on Re$_6$Zr ($T_c$ = 6.72 K) and the isostructural compounds Re$_{27}$Zr$_{5}$ ($T_c$ = 6.53 K) and Re$_{24}$Zr$_{5}$ ($T_c$ = 5.00 K). The nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate $1/T_1$ shows a coherence peak below $T_c$ and decreases exponentially at low temperatures in all three samples. The superconducting gap $Δ$ derived from the $1/T_1$ data is $2Δ=…
The discovery of signatures of topological superconductivity in superconducting bulk materials with topological surface states has attracted intensive research interests recently. Utilizing angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and first-principles calculations, here, we demonstrate the existence of topological nodal-line states and drumheadlike surface states in centrosymmetric superconductor SnTaS2, which is a type-II superconductor with a critical transition temperature of about 3 K. The valence bands from Ta 5d orbitals and the conduction bands from Sn 5p orbitals cross each other, for…
We investigate the superconducting properties of Sc$_{5}$Co$_{4}$Si$_{10}$ using low-temperature resistivity, magnetization, heat capacity, and muon-spin rotation and relaxation ($μ$SR) measurements. We find that Sc$_{5}$Co$_{4}$Si$_{10}$ {exhibits type-II} superconductivity with a superconducting transition temperature $T_\mathrm{C}= 3.5 (1)$\,K. The temperature dependence of the superfluid density obtained from transverse-field $μ$SR spectra is best modeled using an isotropic Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer type $s$-wave gap symmetry with $2Δ/k_\mathrm{B}T_\mathrm{C} = 2.84(2)$. However, the zero-…
The non-centrosymmetric superconductor CePt$_3$Si is believed to have a line node in the energy gap arising from coexistence of s-wave and p-wave pairing. We show that a weak c-axis magnetic field will remove this line node, since it has no topological stability against time-reversal symmetry breaking perturbations. Conversely a field in the $a-b$ plane is shown to remove the line node on some regions of the Fermi surface, while bifurcating the line node in other directions, resulting in two 'boomerang'-like shapes. These line node topological changes are predicted to be observable experimenta…
The paper reviews recent work on time reversal symmetry (TRS) breaking superconductors. The family of TRS breaking superconductors is growing relatively fast, with many of its newly discovered members being non-centrosymmetric. However, many of the superconductors which possess center of inversion also break TRS. The TRS is often identified by means of the muon spin relaxation effect ($μ$SR) or/and the Kerr effect. Both methods effectively measure the spontaneous appearance of the bulk magnetic field below superconducting transition temperature. One of the systems most carefully studied so far…
We have searched for time-reversal symmetry breaking fields in the non-centrosymmetric superconductor Mg$_{10}$Ir$_{19}$B$_{16}$ via muon spin relaxation in zero applied field, and we measured the temperature dependence of the superfluid density by muon spin rotation in transverse field to investigate the superconducting pairing symmetry in two polycrystalline samples of signficantly different purities. In the high purity sample, we detected no time-reversal symmetry breaking fields greater than 0.05 G. The superfluid density was also found to be exponentially-flat as T$\to $0, and so can be f…
We compare the low-temperature electronic properties of the centrosymmetric (CS) and non-centrosymmetric (NCS) phases of Re3W using muon-spin spectroscopy and heat capacity measurements. The zero-field muSR results indicate that time-reversal symmetry is preserved for both structures of Re3W. Transverse-field muon spin rotation has been used to study the temperature dependence of the penetration depth lambda(T) in the mixed state. For both phases of Re3W, lambda(T) can be explained using a single-gap s-wave BCS model. The magnetic penetration depth at zero temperature, lambda(0), is 164(7) and…
We propose a route to achieve odd-parity spin-triplet superconductivity in metallic collinear antiferromagnets with inversion symmetry. Owing to the existence of hidden antiunitary symmetry, which we call the effective time-reversal symmetry (eTRS), the Fermi surfaces of ordinary antiferromagnetic metals are generally spin-degenerate, and spin-singlet pairing is favored. However, by introducing a local inversion symmetry breaking perturbation that also breaks the eTRS, we can lift the degeneracy to obtain spin-polarized Fermi surfaces. In the weak-coupling limit, the spin-polarized Fermi surfa…
A detailed zero-field and transverse-field muon spin relaxation/rotation ($μ$SR) experiemnts have been carried out on the recently discovered non-centrosymmetric superconductor W$_3$Al$_2$C to speculate about its superconducting ground state. Bulk nature of superconductivity below 7.6 K is confirmed through magnetization measurements. No change in the $μ$SR spectra collected above and below $T_c$ is visible, ruling out the possibility of spontaneous magnetic field below $T_c$. This confirms that time-reversal symmetry is preserved for W$_3$Al$_2$C upon entering in the superconducting ground st…
Evidence for broken time reversal symmetry (TRS) has been found in the superconducting states of the $R_5$Rh$_6$Sn$_{18}$ (R = Sc, Y, Lu) compounds with a centrosymmetric caged crystal structure, but the origin of this phenomenon is unresolved. Here we report neutron diffraction measurements of single crystals with $R$=Lu, as well as measurements of the temperature dependence of the magnetic penetration depth using a self-induced tunnel diode-oscillator (TDO) based technique, together with band structure calculations using density functional theory. Neutron diffraction measurements reveal that…
The exceptionally low-symmetry crystal structures of the time-reversal symmetry breaking superconductors LaNiC$_2$ and LaNiGa$_2$ lead to an internally-antisymmetric non-unitary triplet (INT) state as the only possibility compatible with experiments. We argue that this state has a distinct signature: a double-peak structure in the Density of States (DOS) which resolves in the spin channel in a particular way. We construct a detailed model of LaNiGa$_2$ capturing its electronic band structure and magnetic properties ab initio. The pairing mechanism is described via a single adjustable parameter…
Quantum materials having Dirac fermions in conjunction with superconductivity is believed to be the candidate materials to realize exotic physics as well as advanced technology. Angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), a direct probe of the electronic structure, has been extensively used to study these materials. However, experiments often exhibit conflicting results on dimensionality and momentum of the Dirac Fermions (e.g. Dirac states in BiPd, a novel non-centrosymmetric superconductor), which is crucial for the determination of the symmetry, time-reversal invariant momenta and ot…
In this work, we systematically study two phases, called Andreev $π$-phase and orbital-phase, and their influence on the Josephson effect. When the system is time-reversal invariant and centrosymmetric, these two phases only appear in the odd-parity pairings. The Andreev $π$-phase has nothing to do with the specific form of the odd-parity pairings and means an intrinsic $π$-phase between the spin-triplet Cooper pairs entering and leaving CTSCs in the Andreev reflections. The orbital-phase corresponds to the phase difference between the spin-triplet Cooper pairs with opposite spin polarization …
A recent experiment reported two new non-centrosymmetric superconductors NbIr$_{2}$B$_{2}$ and TaIr$_{2}$B$_{2}$ with respective superconducting transition temperatures of 7.2 K and 5.2 K and further suggested their superconductivity to be unconventional [K. Górnicka \textit{et al}., Adv. Funct. Mater. 2007960 (2020)]. Here, based on first-principles calculations and symmetry analysis, we propose that $T$Ir$_{2}$B$_{2}$ ($T$=Nb, Ta) are topological Weyl metals in the normal state. In the absence of spin-orbit coupling (SOC), we find that NbIr$_{2}$B$_{2}$ has 12 Weyl points, and TaIr$_{2}$B$_{…
Multiband effects can lead to fundamentally different electronic behavior of solids, as exemplified by the possible emergence of Fermi surfaces of Bogoliubov quasiparticles in centrosymmetric superconductors which break time-reversal symmetry. We extend the analysis of possible pairing symmetries, the corresponding nodal structure, and the Bogoliubov Fermi surfaces in two directions: We include nonlocal pairing and we consider internal degrees of freedom other than the effective angular momentum of length $j=3/2$ examined so far. Since our main focus is on the Bogoliubov Fermi surfaces we conc…
In the recent search for unconventional- and topological superconductivity, noncentrosymmetric superconductors (NCSCs) rank among the most promising candidate materials. Surprisingly, some of them -- especially those containing rhenium -- seem to exhibit also time-reversal symmetry (TRS) breaking in their superconducting state, while TRS is preserved in many other isostructural NCSCs. To date, a satisfactory explanation for such discrepant behavior, albeit crucial for understanding the unconventional superconductivity of these materials, is still missing. Here we review the most recent develop…
In general, magnetism and superconductivity are antagonistic to each other. However, there are several families of superconductors, in which superconductivity may coexist with magnetism, and only a few examples are known, when superconductivity itself induces spontaneous magnetism. The most known compounds are Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ and some noncentrosymmetric superconductors. Here, we report the finding of a narrow dome of a novel $s+is'$ superconducting (SC) phase with broken time-reversal symmetry (BTRS) inside the broad $s$-wave SC region of the centrosymmetric multiband superconductor Ba$_{\rm 1-x…
We examine different topological phases in three-dimensional non-centrosymmetric superconductors with time-reversal symmetry by using three different types of topological invariants. Due to the bulk boundary correspondence, a non-zero value of any of these topological numbers indicates the appearance of zero-energy Andreev surface states. We find that some of these boundary modes in nodal superconducting phases are dispersionless, i.e., they form a topologically protected flat band. The region where the zero-energy flat band appears in the surface Brillouin zone is determined by the projection…
In the presence of both space and time reversal symmetries, an s-wave A1g superconducting state is usually topologically trivial. Here we demonstrate that an exception can take place in a type of nonsymmorphic lattice structures. We specify the demonstration in a system with a centrosymmetric space group P4/nmm, the symmetry group that governs iron-based superconductors, by showing the existence of a second-order topological state protected by a mirror symmetry. The topological superconductivity is featured by 2Z degenerate Dirac cones on the (1,0) edge, and Z pairs of Majorana modes at the in…
Inversion and time reversal are essential symmetries for the structure of Cooper pairs in superconductors. The loss of one or both leads to modifications to this structure and can change the properties of the superconducting phases in profound ways. Lacking inversion, superconductivity in noncentrosymmetric materials has become an important topic, in particular, in the context of topological superconductivity as well as unusual magnetic and magneto-electric properties. Recently, crystal structures with local, but not global inversion-symmetry breaking have attracted attention, as superconducti…
We introduce the concept of 3D Dirac (Weyl) superconductors (SC), which have protected bulk four(two)-fold nodal points and surface Andreev arcs at zero energy. We provide a sufficient criterion for realizing them in centrosymmetric SCs with odd-parity pairing and mirror symmetry, e.g., the nodal phases of Cu$_x$Bi$_2$Se$_3$. Pairs of Dirac nodes appear in a mirror-invariant plane when the mirror winding number is nontrivial. Breaking mirror symmetry may gap Dirac nodes producing a topological SC. Each Dirac node evolves to a nodal ring when inversion-gauge symmetry is broken. A Dirac node may…
