We calculate the K-theory of the Cuntz-Krieger algebra ${\cal O}_E$ associated with an infinite, locally finite graph, via the Bass-Hashimoto operator. The formulae we get express the Grothendieck group and the Whitehead group in purely graph theoretic terms.
We consider the category of finite (black-and-white, bi-directed) subgraphs with certain graph homomorphisms and construct a continuous functor to abelian groups. In this category $K_0$ is an inductive limit of $K$-groups of finite graphs, which were calculated in \cite{MM}.
In the case of an infinite graph with the finite Betti number we obtain the formula for the Grothendieck group $K_0({\cal O}_E)= {\mathbb Z}^{β(E)+γ(E)},\,$ where $β(E)$ is the first Betti number and $γ(E)$ is the valency number of the graph $E$. We note, that in the infinite case the torsion part of $K_0$, which is present in the case of a finite graph, vanishes. The Whitehead group depends only on the first Betti number: $K_1({\cal O}_E)= {\mathbb Z}^{β(E)}$. These allow us to provide a counterexample to the fact, which holds for finite graphs, that $K_1({\cal O}_E)$ is the torsion free part of $K_0({\cal O}_E)$.
We give a construction of a family of locally finite residually finite groups with just-infinite C*-algebra. This answers a question from [2]. Additionally, we show that residually finite groups of finite exponent are never just-infinite.
A theorem is presented on existence and uniqueness up to the topological *-isomorphism of universal locally C*-algebra for an arbitrary locally JB-algebra.
We consider functors from the category of locally convex algebras to abelian groups and prove invariance under smooth homotopies for weakly J-stable algebras, where J is a harmonic operator ideal. This applies in particular to negative algebraic K-theory. We develop the technology of Kasparov modules in an algebraic setting in order to obtain the results. The article also includes a computation of the first algebraic K-theory of harmonic operator ideals.
We give a vertex set description for basic, graded, regular ideals of locally-convex Kumjian-Pask Algebras. We also show that Condition (B) is preserved when taking the quotient by a basic, graded, regular ideal. We further show that when a locally-convex, row-finite k-graph satisfies Condition (B), all regular ideals are graded. We then show the same things hold for gauge-invariant, regular ideals in locally-convex k-graph C*-algebras.
In the present paper we obtain an intrinsic characterization of real locally C*-algebras (projective limits of projective families of real C*-algebras) among complete real lmc *-algebras, and of locally JB-algebras (projective limits of projective families of JB-algebras) among complete fine Jordan locally multiplicatively-convex topological algebras.
It has been established by Inoue that a complex locally C*-algebra with a dense ideal posesses a bounded approximate identity which belonges to that ideal. It has been shown by Fritzsche that if a unital complex locally C*-algebra has an unbounded element then it also has a dense one-sided ideal. In the present paper we obtain analogues of the aforementioned results of Inoue and Fritzsche for real locally C*-algebras (projective limits of projective families of real C*-algebras), and for locally JB-algebras (projective limits of projective families of JB-algebras).
The crossed products of locally C*-algebras are defined and a Takai duality theorem for inverse limit actions of a locally compact group on a locally C*-algebra is proved.
We introduce and study locally AW*-algebras (Baer locally C*-algebras) as a locally multiplicatively-convex generalization of AW*-algebras of Kaplansky. Among other basic properties of these algebras, it is established that: {\bullet} A locally C*-algebra is a locally AW*-algebra iff there exists its Arens-Michael decomposition consisting entirely of AW*-algebras; {\bullet} A bounded part of a locally AW*-algebra is an AW*-algebra; {\bullet} The Spectral Theorem for locally AW*-algebras.
In this paper we study the unitary equivalence between Hilbert modules over a locally C*-algebra. Also, we prove a stabilization theorem for countably generated modules over an arbitrary locally C*-algebra and show that a Hilbert module over a Frechet locally C*-algebra is countably generated if and only if the locally C*-algebra of all ''compact'' operators has an approximate unit.
In this paper, by analogy with the case of C*-algebras, we define the notion of induced representation of a locally C*-algebra, and then we prove a imprimitivity theorem for induced representations of locally C*-algebras.
The notion of Fréchet locally $C^*$-algebra generalizes the notion of $C^*$-algebra. In this paper, we first present some definitions and basic facts about locally $C^*$-algebra, and then we introduce and study the notion of ideal and weak amenability for these algebras. Also, we show that every Fréchet locally $C^*$-algebra is ideally amenable.
Using an appropriate notion of locally convex Kasparov modules, we show how to induce isomorphisms under a large class of functors on the category of locally convex algebras; examples are obtained from spectral triples. Our considerations are based on the action of algebraic K-theory on these functors, and involve compatibility properties of the induction process with this action, and with Kasparov-type products. This is based on an appropriate interpretation of the Connes-Skandalis connection formalism. As an application, we prove Bott periodicity and a Thom isomorphism for algebras of Schwar…
We study the structure of certain classes of homologically trivial locally C*-algebras. These include algebras with projective irreducible Hermitian A-modules, biprojective algebras, and superbiprojective algebras. We prove that, if A is a locally C*-algebra, then all irreducible Hermitian A-modules are projective if and only if A is a direct topological sum of elementary C*-algebras. This is also equivalent to A being an annihilator (dual, complemented, left quasi-complemented, or topologically modular annihilator) topological algebra. We characterize all annihilator $σ$-C*-algebras and descr…
Let $A$ be a simple separable unital locally approximately subhomogeneous C*-algebra (locally ASH algebra). It is shown that $A\otimes Q$ can be tracially approximated by unital Elliott-Thomsen algebras with trivial $\textrm{K}_1$-group, where $Q$ is the universal UHF algebra. In particular, it follows that $A$ is classifiable by the Elliott invariant if $A$ is Jiang-Su stable.
In the present paper the notion of a Hilbert module over a locally C*-algebra is discussed and some results are obtained on this matter. In particular, we give a detailed proof of the known result that the set of adjointable endomorphisms of such modules is itself a locally C*-algebra.
We study induced representations of Hilbert modules over locally C*-algebras and their non-degeneracy. We show that if $V$ and $W$ are Morita equivalent Hilbert modules over locally C*-algebras $A$ and $B$, respectively, then there exists a bijective correspondence between equivalence classes of non-degenerate representations of $V$ and $W$.
In this paper, we introduce the notion of a scattered locally $C^{\ast }$ -algebra and we give conditions for a locally $C^{\ast }$-algebra to be scattered. Given an action $α$ of a locally compact group $G$ on a scattered locally $C^{\ast }$-algebra $A[τ_{Γ}]$, it is natural to ask under what conditions the crossed product $A[τ_{Γ}]\times_{α}G$ is also scattered. We obtain some results concerning this question.
We prove a covariant version of the KSGNS (Kasparov, Stinespring, Gel'fand,Naimark,Segal) construction for completely positive linear maps between locally $C^{*}$-algebras. As an application of this construction, we show that a covariant completely positive linear map $ρ$ from a locally $C^{*}$-algebra $A$ to another locally $C^{*}$ -algebra $B$ with respect to a locally $C^{*}$-dynamical system $(G,A,α)$ extends to a completely positive linear map on the crossed product $A\times_{α^{}}G$.
It shown that an a locally injective surjection on a compact metric space admits a canonical locally homeomorphic extension such that the associated C*-algebras are isomorphic. This is then used in a study of the possible inverse temperatures of KMS states for a generalized gauge action.
We study the uniform Roe algebras associated to locally finite groups. We show that for two countable locally finite groups $Γ$ and $Λ$, the associated uniform Roe algebras $C^*_u(Γ)$ and $C^*_u(Λ)$ are $*$-isomorphic if and only if their $K_0$ groups are isomorphic as ordered abelian groups with units. This can be seen as a non-separable non-simple analogue of the Glimm-Elliott classification of UHF algebras. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first classification result for a class of non-separable unital $C^*$-algebras. Along the way we also obtain a rigidity result: two countable lo…
We prove that every Lie derivation on a solid $\star-$subalgebras of locally measurable operators it is equal to a sum of the associative derivation and the center-valued trace.
We obtain a description of the C*-algebras which can occur as a simple quotient of the C*-algebra of a locally injective surjection on a compact metric space of finite covering dimension.
The paper is devoted to 2-local derivations on the algebra $LS(M)$ of all locally measurable operators affiliated with a type I$_\infty$ von Neumann algebra $M.$ We prove that every 2-local derivation on $LS(M)$ is a derivation.
We consider the locally measure topology $t(\mathcal{M})$ on the *-algebra $LS(\mathcal{M})$ of all locally measurable operators affiliated with a von Neumann algebra $\mathcal{M}$. We prove that $t(\mathcal{M})$ coincides with the $(o)$-topology on $LS_h(\mathcal{M})=\{T\in LS(\mathcal{M}): T^*=T\}$ if and only if the algebra $\mathcal{M}$ is $σ$-finite and a finite algebra. We study relationships between the topology $t(\mathcal{M})$ and various topologies generated by faithful normal semifinite traces on $\mathcal{M}$.
We introduce the notion of locally finite decomposition rank, a structural property shared by many stably finite nuclear C*-algebras. The concept is particularly relevant for Elliott's program to classify nuclear C*-algebras by K-theory data. We study some of its properties and show that a simple unital C*-algebra, which has locally finite decomposition rank, real rank zero and which absorbs the Jiang-Su algebra Z tensorially, has tracial rank zero in the sense of Lin. As a consequence, any such C*-algebra, if it additionally satisfies the Universal Coefficients Theorem, is approximately homog…
We introduce and investigate using Hilbert modules the properties of the Fourier algebra A(G) for a locally compact groupoid G. We establish a duality theorem for such groupoids in terms of multiplicative module maps. This includes as a special case the classical duality theorem for locally compact groups proved by P. Eymard.
In this series of papers, we develop the theory of a class of locally compact quantum groupoids, which is motivated by the purely algebraic notion of weak multiplier Hopf algebras. In this Part I, we provide motivation and formulate the definition in the C*-algebra framework. Existence of a certain canonical idempotent element is required and it plays a fundamental role, including the establishment of the coassociativity of the comultiplication. This class contains locally compact quantum groups as a subclass.
If $\ca_0[|\cdot|_0]$ is a $\cs$-normed algebra and $τ$ a locally convex topology on $\ca_0$ making its multiplication separately continuous, then $\widetilde{\ca_0}[τ]$ (completion of $\ca_0[τ]$) is a locally convex quasi *-algebra over $\ca_0$, but it is not necessarily a locally convex quasi *-algebra over the $\cs$-algebra $\widetilde{\ca_0}[|\cdot|_0]$ (completion of $\ca_0[|\cdot|_0]$). In this article, stimulated by physical examples, we introduce the notion of a locally convex quasi $\cs$-normed algebra, aiming at the investigation of $\widetilde{\ca_0}[τ]$; in particular, we study its…
We study multiplier algebras for a large class of Banach algebras which contains the group algebra $L_1(G)$, the Beurling algebras $L_1(G, ω)$, and the Fourier algebra $A(G)$ of a locally compact group $G$. This study yields numerous new results and unifies some existing theorems on $L_1(G)$ and $A(G)$ through an abstract Banach algebraic approach. Applications are obtained on representations of multipliers over locally compact quantum groups and on topological centre problems. In particular, five open problems in abstract harmonic analysis are solved.
In this paper an automorphism of a unital C*-algebra is said to be /locally inner/ if on any element it agrees with some inner automorphism. We make a fairly complete study of local innerness in von Neumann algebras, incorporating comparison with the pointwise innerness of Haagerup-Stormer. On some von Neumann algebras, including all with separable predual, a locally inner automorphism must be inner. But a transfinitely recursive construction demonstrates that this is not true in general. As an application, we show that the diagonal sum descends to a well-defined map on the automorphism orbits…
We introduce and investigate using Hilbert modules the properties of the {\em Fourier algebra} $A(G)$ for a locally compact groupoid $G$. We establish a duality theorem for such groupoids in terms of multiplicative module maps. This includes as a special case the classical duality theorem for locally compact groups proved by P. Eymard.
We introduce the notion of strong Morita equivalence for group actions on locally C*-algebras and prove that the crossed products associated with two strongly Morita equivalent continuous inverse limit actions of a locally compact group G on the locally C*-algebras A and B are strongly Morita equivalent. This generalizes a result of F. Combes, Proc. London Math. Soc. 49(1984) and R. E. Curto, P.S. Muhly, D. P. Williams, Proc. Amer. Soc. 90(1984).

It is established that every derivation continuous with respect to the local measure topology acting on the *-algebra $LS(\mathcal{M})$ of all locally measurable operators affiliated with a von Neumann algebra $\mathcal{M}$ is necessary inner. If $\mathcal{M}$ is a properly infinite von Neumann algebra, then every derivation on $LS(\mathcal{M})$ is inner. In addition, it is proved that any derivation on $\mathcal{M}$ with values in Banach $\mathcal{M}$-bimodule of locally measurable operators is inner.
We construct some inverse-closed algebras of bounded integral operators with operator-valued kernels, acting in spaces of vector-valued functions on locally compact groups. To this end we make systematic use of covariance algebras associated to $C^*$-dynamical systems defined by the abelian $C^*$-algebras of right uniformly continuous functions with respect to the left regular representation.
In this paper, we introduce properties including groupoid comparison, pure infiniteness and paradoxical comparison as well as a new algebraic tool called groupoid semigroup for locally compact Hausdorff étale groupoids. We show these new tools help establishing pure infiniteness of reduced groupoid $C^*$-algebras. As an application, we show a dichotomy of stably finiteness against pure infiniteness for reduced groupoid $C^*$-algebras arising from locally compact Hausdorff étale minimal topological principal groupoids. This generalizes the dichotomy obtained by Bönicke-Li and Rainone-Sims. We a…
We generalise the definition of a group algebra so that it makes sense for non-locally compact topological groups, in particular, we require that the representation theory of the group algebra is isomorphic (in the sense of Gelfand-Raikov) to the continuous representation theory of the group, or to some other important subset of representations. We prove that a group algebra if it exists, is always unique up to isomorphism. From examples, group algebras do not always exist for non-locally compact groups, but they do exist for some. We define a convolution on the dual of the Fourier-Stieltjes a…
In this paper we complete in several aspects the picture of locally compact quantum groups. First of all we give a definition of a locally compact quantum group in the von Neumann algebraic setting and show how to deduce from it a C*-algebraic quantum group. Further we prove several results about locally compact quantum groups which are important for applications, but were not yet settled in our paper "Locally compact quantum groups". We prove a serious strengthening of the left invariance of the Haar weight, and we give several formulas connecting the locally compact quantum group with its du…
This work provides a generalization of the Gelfand duality to the context of noncommutative locally $C^*$ algebras. Using a reformulation of a theorem proven by Dauns and Hofmann in the 60's we show that every locally $C^*$ algebra can be realized as the algebra of continuous sections of a $C^*$ bundle over a compactly generated topological space. This result is used then to show that on certain special cases locally $C^*$ algebras can be used to define certain sheaves of locally $C^*$ algebras that, inspired by the analogy with commutative geometry, we call noncommutative spaces. The last sec…
In the present note we show that if A is a locally C*-algebra, and I and J are closed two-sided ideals in A, then the positive part of (I+J) is equal to the sum of positive parts of I and J.
We initiate a study of non-commutative Choquet boundary for spaces of unbounded operators. We define the notion of local boundary representations for local operator systems in locally C$^*$-algebras and prove that local boundary representations provide an intrinsic invariant for a particular class of local operator systems. An appropriate analog of purity of local completely positive maps on local operator systems is used to characterize local boundary representations for local operator systems in Frechet locally C$^*$-algebras.
The Fourier-Stieltjes and Fourier algebras B(G), A(G) for a general locally compact group G, first studied by P. Eymard, have played an important role in harmonic analysis and in the study of operator algebras generated by G. Recently, there has been interest in developing versions of these algebras for locally compact groupoids, justification being that, just as in the group case, the algebras should play a useful role in the study of groupoid operator algebras. Versions of these algebras for the locally compact groupoid case appear in three related theories: (1) a measured groupoid theory (J…
In this paper we introduce a new way of deforming convolution algebras and Fourier algebras on locally compact groups. We demonstrate that this new deformation allows us to reveal some informations of the underlying groups by examinining Banach algebra properties of deformed algebras. More precisely, we focus on representability as an operator algebra of deformed convolution algebras on compact connected Lie groups with connection to the real dimension of the underlying group. Similary, we investigate complete representability as an operator algebra of deformed Fourier algebras on some finitel…
We extend the Fuglede-Putnam theorem from the algebra $B(H)$ of all bounded operators on the Hilbert space $H$ to the algebra of all locally measurable operators affiliated with a von Neumann algebra.
Given a locally convex space $(\mathcal{A},τ)$ with a Hausdorff locally convex topology $τ$ such that the following maps are continuous; $u \mapsto u^*$ for all $u \in \mathcal{A}$, $x \mapsto x\cdot y$ and $x \mapsto z\cdot x$ for every left and right multipliers of $\mathcal{A}$. In this paper we re-characterized the locally convex partial $*$-algebra $(\mathcal{A}, Γ,\cdot,*,τ)$ arising from these continuous maps in terms of convolution algebra of a Lie groupoid $Γ\rightrightarrows \mathcal{A}$. This is advantageous because the pathologies of the underlying spaces owing to their quantum mec…
The notion of an action of a locally compact quantum group on a von Neumann algebra is studied from the amenability point of view. Various Reiter's conditions for such an action are discussed. Several applications to some specific actions related to certain representations and corepresentaions are presented.
In this paper, we investigate the structure of the multiplier module of a Hilbert module over a locally C*-algebra and the relationship between the set of all adjointable operators from a Hilbert A-module E to a Hilbert A-module F and the set of all adjointable operators from the multiplier module M(E)of E to the multiplier module M(F) of F.
We prove that any derivation of the *-algebra $LS(\mathcal{M})$ of all locally measurable operators affiliated with a properly infinite von Neumann algebra $\mathcal{M}$ is continuous with respect to the local measure topology $t(\mathcal{M})$. Building an extension of a derivation $δ:\mathcal{M}\longrightarrow LS(\mathcal{M})$ up to a derivation from $LS(\mathcal{M})$ into $LS(\mathcal{M})$, it is further established that any derivation from $\mathcal{M}$ into $LS(\mathcal{M})$ is $t(\mathcal{M})$-continuous.
Given a coarse space $(X,\mathcal{E})$, one can define a $\mathrm{C}^*$-algebra $\mathrm{C}^*_u(X)$ called the uniform Roe algebra of $(X,\mathcal{E})$. It has been proved by J. Špakula and R. Willett that if the uniform Roe algebras of two uniformly locally finite metric spaces with property A are isomorphic, then the metric spaces are coarsely equivalent to each other. In this paper, we look at the problem of generalizing this result for general coarse spaces and on weakening the hypothesis of the spaces having property A.
Let $X$ be a locally compact non compact Hausdorff topological space. Consider the algebras $C(X)$, $C_b(X)$, $C_0(X)$, and $C_{00}(X)$ of respectively arbitrary, bounded, vanishing at infinity, and compactly supported continuous functions on $X$. From these, the second and third are $C^{*}$-algebras, the forth is a normed algebra, where as the first is only a topological algebra. The interesting fact about these algebras is that if one of them is given, the rest can be obtained using functional analysis tools. For instance, given the $C^{*}$-algebra $C_0(X)$, one can get the other three algeb…
The Kirchberg Embedding Problem (KEP) asks if every C*-algebra embeds into an ultrapower of the Cuntz algebra $\mathcal{O}_2$. In an effort to provide a negative solution to the KEP and motivated by the recent refutation of the Connes Embedding Problem, we establish two computability-theoretic consequences of a positive solution to KEP. Both of our results follow from the a priori weaker assumption that there exists a locally universal C*-algebra with a computable presentation.
