We generalise the definition of a group algebra so that it makes sense for non-locally compact topological groups, in particular, we require that the representation theory of the group algebra is isomorphic (in the sense of Gelfand-Raikov) to the continuous representation theory of the group, or to some other important subset of representations. We prove that a group algebra if it exists, is always unique up to isomorphism. From examples, group algebras do not always exist for non-locally compact groups, but they do exist for some. We define a convolution on the dual of the Fourier-Stieltjes algebra making it into a Banach *-algebra, we prove that a group algebra if it exists, can always be embedded in this convolution algebra, and we find sufficient conditions for a subalgebra to be a group algebra. When the group is locally compact, we obtain a new characterisation of its group algebra which does not involve the Haar measure, nor behaviour of measures on compact sets.
We give some new characterizations of exactness for locally compact second countable groups. In particular, we prove that a locally compact second countable group is exact if and only if it admits a topologically amenable action on a compact Hausdorff space. This answers an open question by Anantharaman-Delaroche.
We study universal properties of locally compact G-spaces for countable infinite groups G. In particular we consider open invariant subsets of the β-compactification of G (which is a G-space in a natural way), and their minimal closed invariant subspaces. These are locally compact free G-spaces, and the latter are also minimal. We examine the properies of these G-spaces with emphasis on their universal properties. As an example of our resuts, we use combinatorial methods to show that each countable infinite group admits a free minimal action on the locally compact non-compact Cantor set.
A theorem is presented on existence and uniqueness up to the topological *-isomorphism of universal locally C*-algebra for an arbitrary locally JB-algebra.
In the present paper we obtain an intrinsic characterization of real locally C*-algebras (projective limits of projective families of real C*-algebras) among complete real lmc *-algebras, and of locally JB-algebras (projective limits of projective families of JB-algebras) among complete fine Jordan locally multiplicatively-convex topological algebras.
The purpose of this paper is to study property (RD) for locally compact Hecke pairs. We discuss length functions on Hecke pairs and the growth of Hecke pairs. We establish an equivalence between property (RD) of locally compact groups and property (RD) of certain locally compact Hecke pairs. This allows us to transfer several important results concerning property (RD) of locally compact groups into our setting, and consequently to identify many classes of examples of locally compact Hecke pairs with property (RD). We also show that a reduced discrete Hecke pair $(G,H)$ has (RD) if and only if …
Let $\G$ be a unimodular type I second countable locally compact group and $\wG$ its unitary dual. Motivated by a recent pseudo-differential calculus, we develop a positive Berezin-type quantization with operator-valued symbols defined on $\wG\times\G$.
We discuss a very general Kirillov Theory for the representations of certain nilpotent groups which gives a combined view an many known examples from the literature.
The theory of measured quantum groupoids, as defined by Lesieur and myself, was made to generalize the theory of quantum groups made by Kustarmans and Vaes, but was only defined in a von Neumann algebra setting; Th. Timmermann constructed locally compact quantum groupoids, which is a C*-version of quantum groupoids. Here, we associate to such a locally compact quantum groupoid a measured quantum groupoid in which it is weakly dense; we then associate to a measured quantum groupoid a locally compact quantum groupoid which is weakly dense in the measured quantum groupoid, but such a locally comp…
In this paper we complete in several aspects the picture of locally compact quantum groups. First of all we give a definition of a locally compact quantum group in the von Neumann algebraic setting and show how to deduce from it a C*-algebraic quantum group. Further we prove several results about locally compact quantum groups which are important for applications, but were not yet settled in our paper "Locally compact quantum groups". We prove a serious strengthening of the left invariance of the Haar weight, and we give several formulas connecting the locally compact quantum group with its du…
We study class $\mathcal S$ for locally compact groups. We characterize locally compact groups in this class as groups having an amenable action on a boundary that is small at infinity, generalizing a theorem of Ozawa. Using this characterization, we provide new examples of groups in class $\mathcal S$ and prove unique prime factorization results for group von Neumann algebras of products of locally compact groups in this class. We also prove that class $\mathcal S$ is a measure equivalence invariant.
We extend the classical Stone duality between zero dimensional compact Hausdorff spaces and Boolean algebras. Specifically, we simultaneously remove the zero dimensionality restriction and extend to étale groupoids, obtaining a duality with an elementary class of inverse semigroups.
We introduce the construction of induced corepresentations in the setting of locally compact quantum groups and prove that the resulting induced corepresentations are unitary under some mild integrability condition. We also establish a quantum analogue of the classical bijective correspondence between quasi-invariant measures and certain measures on the larger locally compact group.
It has been established by Inoue that a complex locally C*-algebra with a dense ideal posesses a bounded approximate identity which belonges to that ideal. It has been shown by Fritzsche that if a unital complex locally C*-algebra has an unbounded element then it also has a dense one-sided ideal. In the present paper we obtain analogues of the aforementioned results of Inoue and Fritzsche for real locally C*-algebras (projective limits of projective families of real C*-algebras), and for locally JB-algebras (projective limits of projective families of JB-algebras).
The crossed products of locally C*-algebras are defined and a Takai duality theorem for inverse limit actions of a locally compact group on a locally C*-algebra is proved.
The Haar measure on some locally compact quantum groups is constructed. The main example we treat is the az+b-group of Woronowicz. We also briefly consider some other examples (like the ax+b-group). We get the first examples of a locally compact quantum group where the Haar measure is not invariant with respect to the scaling group.
This is a short survey on idempotent states on locally compact groups and locally compact quantum groups. The central topic is the relationship between idempotent states, subgroups and invariant C*-subalgebras. We concentrate on recent results on locally compact quantum groups, but begin with the classical notion of idempotent probability measure. We also consider the `intermediate' case of idempotent states in the Fourier--Stieltjes algebra: this is the dual case of idempotent probability measures and so an instance of idempotent states on a locally compact quantum group.
We introduce and study locally AW*-algebras (Baer locally C*-algebras) as a locally multiplicatively-convex generalization of AW*-algebras of Kaplansky. Among other basic properties of these algebras, it is established that: {\bullet} A locally C*-algebra is a locally AW*-algebra iff there exists its Arens-Michael decomposition consisting entirely of AW*-algebras; {\bullet} A bounded part of a locally AW*-algebra is an AW*-algebra; {\bullet} The Spectral Theorem for locally AW*-algebras.
In this paper we study the unitary equivalence between Hilbert modules over a locally C*-algebra. Also, we prove a stabilization theorem for countably generated modules over an arbitrary locally C*-algebra and show that a Hilbert module over a Frechet locally C*-algebra is countably generated if and only if the locally C*-algebra of all ''compact'' operators has an approximate unit.
We introduce and investigate using Hilbert modules the properties of the Fourier algebra A(G) for a locally compact groupoid G. We establish a duality theorem for such groupoids in terms of multiplicative module maps. This includes as a special case the classical duality theorem for locally compact groups proved by P. Eymard.
In this paper, by analogy with the case of C*-algebras, we define the notion of induced representation of a locally C*-algebra, and then we prove a imprimitivity theorem for induced representations of locally C*-algebras.
We generalize the representation theorem of Junge, Neufang and Ruan [A representation theorem for locally compact quantum groups, Internat. J. Math. 20(3) (2009) 377-400], and some of the important results which were used in its proof, to the case of actions of locally compact quantum groups on von Neumann algebras.
We show a classification theorem for locally compact separable abelain group actions on factorsw with the Rohlin property. This is a generalization of Masuda and Tomatsu's work.
Equivariant T-duality triples of locally compact abelian groups are considered. The motivating example dealing with the group $\R^n$ containing a lattice $\Z^n$ comes with an isomorphism in twisted equivariant K-theory.
In this short note we introduce a notion called "quantum injectivity" of locally compact quantum groups, and prove that it is equivalent to amenability of the dual. Particularly, this provides a new characterization of amenability of locally compact groups.
In this paper, we generalize Young's inequality for locally compact quantum groups and obtain some results for extremal pairs of Young's inequality and extremal functions of Hausdorff-Young inequality.
It is proved that every second countable locally Hausdorff and locally compact continuous groupoid has a Borel set of units that meets every orbit and is what is called "lacunary," a property that implies that the intersection with every orbit is countable.
The notion of Fréchet locally $C^*$-algebra generalizes the notion of $C^*$-algebra. In this paper, we first present some definitions and basic facts about locally $C^*$-algebra, and then we introduce and study the notion of ideal and weak amenability for these algebras. Also, we show that every Fréchet locally $C^*$-algebra is ideally amenable.
We develop the twisting construction for locally compact quantum groups. A new feature, in contrast to the previous work of M. Enock and the second author, is a non-trivial deformation of the Haar measure. Then we construct Rieffel's deformation of locally compact quantum groups and show that it is dual to the twisting. This allows to give new interesting concrete examples of locally compact quantum groups, in particular, deformations of the classical $az+b$ group and of the Woronowicz' quantum $az+b$ group.
We introduce and investigate using Hilbert modules the properties of the {\em Fourier algebra} $A(G)$ for a locally compact groupoid $G$. We establish a duality theorem for such groupoids in terms of multiplicative module maps. This includes as a special case the classical duality theorem for locally compact groups proved by P. Eymard.
In the framework of locally compact quantum groups, we study cocycle actions. We develop the cocycle bicrossed product construction, starting from a matched pair of locally compact quantum groups. We define exact sequences and establish a one-to-one correspondence between cocycle bicrossed products and cleft extensions. In this way, we obtain new examples of locally compact quantum groups.
As is well known, the equivalence between amenability of a locally compact group $G$ and injectivity of its von Neumann algebra $\mathcal{L}(G)$ does not hold in general beyond inner amenable groups. In this paper, we show that the equivalence persists for all locally compact groups if $\mathcal{L}(G)$ is considered as a $\mathcal{T}(L_2(G))$-module with respect to a natural action. In fact, we prove an appropriate version of this result for every locally compact quantum group.
In this paper, we introduce a new notion of representation for a locally convex partial *-algebraic module as a concrete space of maps. This is a continuation of our systematic study of locally convex partial *-algebraic modules, which are generalizations of inner product modules over C*-algebras.
We study the structure of certain classes of homologically trivial locally C*-algebras. These include algebras with projective irreducible Hermitian A-modules, biprojective algebras, and superbiprojective algebras. We prove that, if A is a locally C*-algebra, then all irreducible Hermitian A-modules are projective if and only if A is a direct topological sum of elementary C*-algebras. This is also equivalent to A being an annihilator (dual, complemented, left quasi-complemented, or topologically modular annihilator) topological algebra. We characterize all annihilator $σ$-C*-algebras and descr…
The purpose of this paper is extend the notion of morphism of groupoids introduced by Zakrzewski to locally compact $σ$-compact groupoids endowed with Haar systems and to use the extension to construct a covariant functor from this category to a category of $C^{\ast}$-algebras in the sense of Woronowicz.
Dana P. Williams raised in [Proc. Am. Math. Soc., Ser. B, 2016] the following question: Must a second countable, locally compact, transitive groupoid have open range map? This paper gives a negative answer to that question. Although a second countable, locally compact transitive groupoid G may fail to have open range map, we prove that we can replace its topology with a topology which is also second countable, locally compact, and with respect to which G is a topological groupoid whose range map is open. Moreover, the two topologies generate the same Borel structure and coincide on the fibres …
We introduce the notion of a quantum locally compact metric space, which is the noncommutative analogue of a locally compact metric space, and generalize to the nonunital setting the notion of quantum metric spaces introduced by Rieffel. We then provide several examples of such structures, including the Moyal plane, as well as compact quantum metric spaces and locally compact metric spaces. This paper provides an answer to the question raised in the literature about the proper notion of a quantum metric space in the nonunital setup and offers important insights into noncommutative geometry for…
Bornological quantum groups were introduced by Voigt in order to generalize the theory of algebraic quantum groups in the sense of van Daele. In particular the class of bornological quantum groups contains all classical locally compact groups. In this paper we prove that a bornological quantum group gives rise to a locally compact quantum group, in a similar way to Kustermans and van Daele's result for algebraic quantum groups. We show that the bornological quantum groups, although more general than the algebraic ones, share most of their nice properties. We also argue that bornological quantu…
Let $A$ be a simple separable unital locally approximately subhomogeneous C*-algebra (locally ASH algebra). It is shown that $A\otimes Q$ can be tracially approximated by unital Elliott-Thomsen algebras with trivial $\textrm{K}_1$-group, where $Q$ is the universal UHF algebra. In particular, it follows that $A$ is classifiable by the Elliott invariant if $A$ is Jiang-Su stable.
We study lattice operations on the set of idempotent states on a locally compact quantum group corresponding to the operations of intersection of compact subgroups and forming the subgroup generated by two compact subgroups. Normal ($σ$-weakly continuous) idempotent states are investigated and a duality between normal idempotent states on a locally compact quantum group $\mathbb{G}$ and on its dual $\widehat{\mathbb{G}}$ is established. Additionally we analyze the question when a left coideal corresponding canonically to an idempotent state is finite dimensional and give a characterization of …
In this paper, we introduce the notion of a scattered locally $C^{\ast }$ -algebra and we give conditions for a locally $C^{\ast }$-algebra to be scattered. Given an action $α$ of a locally compact group $G$ on a scattered locally $C^{\ast }$-algebra $A[τ_{Γ}]$, it is natural to ask under what conditions the crossed product $A[τ_{Γ}]\times_{α}G$ is also scattered. We obtain some results concerning this question.
We prove a covariant version of the KSGNS (Kasparov, Stinespring, Gel'fand,Naimark,Segal) construction for completely positive linear maps between locally $C^{*}$-algebras. As an application of this construction, we show that a covariant completely positive linear map $ρ$ from a locally $C^{*}$-algebra $A$ to another locally $C^{*}$ -algebra $B$ with respect to a locally $C^{*}$-dynamical system $(G,A,α)$ extends to a completely positive linear map on the crossed product $A\times_{α^{}}G$.
We combine harmonic analysis and operator algebraic techniques to give a concise argument that the left regular representation of a locally compact group is cyclic if and only if the group is first countable, a result first proved by Greenleaf and Moskowitz.
We show that there is a one-to-one correspondence between compact quantum subgroups of a co-amenable locally compact quantum group $\mathbb{G}$ and certain left invariant C*-subalgebras of $C_0(\mathbb{G})$. We also prove that every compact quantum subgroup of a co-amenable quantum group is co-amenable. Moreover, there is a one-to-one correspondence between open subgroups of an amenable locally compact group $G$ and non-zero, invariant C*-subalgebras of the group C*-algebra $C^*(G)$.
We consider functors from the category of locally convex algebras to abelian groups and prove invariance under smooth homotopies for weakly J-stable algebras, where J is a harmonic operator ideal. This applies in particular to negative algebraic K-theory. We develop the technology of Kasparov modules in an algebraic setting in order to obtain the results. The article also includes a computation of the first algebraic K-theory of harmonic operator ideals.
In this paper, we introduce properties including groupoid comparison, pure infiniteness and paradoxical comparison as well as a new algebraic tool called groupoid semigroup for locally compact Hausdorff étale groupoids. We show these new tools help establishing pure infiniteness of reduced groupoid $C^*$-algebras. As an application, we show a dichotomy of stably finiteness against pure infiniteness for reduced groupoid $C^*$-algebras arising from locally compact Hausdorff étale minimal topological principal groupoids. This generalizes the dichotomy obtained by Bönicke-Li and Rainone-Sims. We a…
