We prove a covariant version of the KSGNS (Kasparov, Stinespring, Gel'fand,Naimark,Segal) construction for completely positive linear maps between locally $C^{*}$-algebras. As an application of this construction, we show that a covariant completely positive linear map $ρ$ from a locally $C^{*}$-algebra $A$ to another locally $C^{*}$ -algebra $B$ with respect to a locally $C^{*}$-dynamical system $(G,A,α)$ extends to a completely positive linear map on the crossed product $A\times_{α^{}}G$.
As is well known, the equivalence between amenability of a locally compact group $G$ and injectivity of its von Neumann algebra $\mathcal{L}(G)$ does not hold in general beyond inner amenable groups. In this paper, we show that the equivalence persists for all locally compact groups if $\mathcal{L}(G)$ is considered as a $\mathcal{T}(L_2(G))$-module with respect to a natural action. In fact, we prove an appropriate version of this result for every locally compact quantum group.
Building on our previous work, we study the non-relative homology of quantum group convolution algebras. Our main result establishes the equivalence of amenability of a locally compact quantum group $\mathbb{G}$ and 1-injectivity of $L^{\infty}(\widehat{\mathbb{G}})$ as an operator $L^1(\widehat{\mathbb{G}})$-module. In particular, a locally compact group $G$ is amenable if and only if its group von Neumann algebra $VN(G)$ is 1-injective as an operator module over the Fourier algebra $A(G)$. As an application, we provide a decomposability result for completely bounded $L^1(\widehat{\mathbb{G}}…
We introduce {\it covariant structures} $\left\{(\A,\k),(\a,å),\(\ha,\haa\)\right\}$ formed of a separable $C^*$-algebra $\A$, a measurable twisted action $(\a,å)$ of the second-countable locally compact group $\G$\,, a measurable twisted action $(\ha,\haa)$ of another second-countable locally compact group $\hG$ and a strictly continuous function $\k:\G\times\hG\to\U\M(\A)$ suitably connected with $(\a,å)$ and $\(\ha,\haa\)$\,. Natural notions of covariant morphisms and representations are considered, leading to a sort of twisted crossed product construction. Various $C^*$-algebras emerge by …
In this paper, we investigate $Φ$-maps associated to a certain type of $α$-completely positive maps. We then prove a KSGNS (Kasparov--Stinespring--Gel'fand--Naimark--Segal) type theorem for $α$-completely positive maps on Krein $C^*$-modules and show that the minimal KSGNS construction is unique up to unitary equivalence. We also establish a covariant version of the KSGNS type theorem for a covariant $α$-completely positive map and study the structure of minimal covariant KSGNS constructions.
We prove two versions of Bochner's theorem for locally compact quantum groups. First, every completely positive definite "function" on a locally compact quantum group $\G$ arises as a transform of a positive functional on the universal C*-algebra $C_0^u(\dual\G)$ of the dual quantum group. Second, when $\G$ is coamenable, complete positive definiteness may be replaced with the weaker notion of positive definiteness, which models the classical notion. A counterexample is given to show that the latter result is not true in general. To prove these results, we show two auxiliary results of indepen…
We extend applications of Furstenberg boundary theory to the study of $C^*$-algebras associated to minimal actions $Γ\!\curvearrowright\! X$ of discrete groups $Γ$ on locally compact spaces $X$. We introduce boundary maps on $(Γ,X)$-$C^*$-algebras and investigate their applications in this context. Among other results, we completely determine when $C^*$-algebras generated by covariant representations arising from stabilizer subgroups are simple. We also characterize the intersection property of locally compact $Γ$-spaces and simplicity of their associated crossed products.
Let $X=(X(n))_{n \in \mathbb{Z_+}}$ be a standard subproduct system of $C^*$-correspondences over a $C^*$-algebra $\mathcal M.$ Assume $T=(T_n)_{n \in \mathbb{Z_+}}$ to be a pure completely contractive, covariant representation of $X$ on a Hilbert space $\mathcal H,$ and $\mathcal S$ to be a non-trivial closed subspace of $\mathcal H.$ Then $\mathcal{S}$ is invariant for $T$ if and only if there exist a Hilbert space $\mathcal{D},$ a representation $π$ of $\mathcal M$ on $\mathcal D,$ and a partial isometry $Π: \mathcal{F}_X\bigotimes_π\mathcal{D}\to \mathcal{H} $ such that $$Π(S_n(ζ)\otimes I…
Given a locally compact quantum group $\mathbb G$, we study the structure of completely bounded homomorphisms $π:L^1(\mathbb G)\rightarrow\mathcal B(H)$, and the question of when they are similar to $\ast$-homomorphisms. By analogy with the cocommutative case (representations of the Fourier algebra $A(G)$), we are led to consider the associated map $π^*:L^1_\sharp(\mathbb G) \rightarrow \mathcal B(H)$ given by $π^*(ω) = π(ω^\sharp)^*$. We show that the corepresentation $V_π$ of $L^\infty(\mathbb G)$ associated to $π$ is invertible if and only if both $π$ and $π^*$ are completely bounded. Moreo…
A result of Gilbert shows that every completely bounded multiplier $f$ of the Fourier algebra $A(G)$ arises from a pair of bounded continuous maps $α,β:G \rightarrow K$, where $K$ is a Hilbert space, and $f(s^{-1}t) = (β(t)|α(s))$ for all $s,t\in G$. We recast this in terms of adjointable operators acting between certain Hilbert C$^*$-modules, and show that an analogous construction works for completely bounded left multipliers of a locally compact quantum group. We find various ways to deal with right multipliers: one of these involves looking at the opposite quantum group, and this leads to …
Let $τ$ be a linear map from a unital $C^*$-algebra $\CMcal A$ to a von Neumann algebra $\mathematical B$ and let $\CMcal C$ be a unital $C^*$-algebra. A map $T$ from a Hilbert $\CMcal A$-module $E$ to a von Neumann $\CMcal C$-$\CMcal B$ module $F$ is called a $τ$-map if $$\langle T(x),T(y)\rangle=τ(\langle x, y\rangle)~\mbox{for all}~x,y\in E.$$ A Stinespring type theorem for $τ$-maps and its covariant version are obtained when $τ$ is completely positive. We show that there is a bijective correspondence between the set of all $τ$-maps from $E$ to $F$ which are $(u',u)$-covariant with respect …
Singular actions on C*-algebras are automorphic group actions on C*-algebras, where the group need not be locally compact, or the action need not be strongly continuous. We study the covariant representation theory of such actions. In the usual case of strongly continuous actions of locally compact groups on C*-algebras, this is done via crossed products, but this approach is not available for singular C*-actions (this was our path in a previous paper). The literature regarding covariant representations for singular actions is already large and scattered, and in need of some consolidation. We …
A celebrated theorem of Pimsner states that a covariant representation $T$ of a $C^*$-correspondence $E$ extends to a $C^*$-representation of the Toeplitz algebra of $E$ if and only if $T$ is isometric. This paper is mainly concerned with finding conditions for a covariant representation of a \emph{subproduct system} to extend to a $C^*$-representation of the Toeplitz algebra. This framework is much more general than the former. We are able to find sufficient conditions, and show that in important special cases, they are also necessary. Further results include the universality of the tensor al…
We study positive kernels on $X\times X$, where $X$ is a set equipped with an action of a group, and taking values in the set of $\mathcal A$-sesquilinear forms on a (not necessarily Hilbert) module over a $C^*$-algebra $\mathcal A$. These maps are assumed to be covariant with respect to the group action on $X$ and a representation of the group in the set of invertible ($\mathcal A$-linear) module maps. We find necessary and sufficient conditions for extremality of such kernels in certain convex subsets of positive covariant kernels. Our focus is mainly on a particular example of these kernels…
In this paper, we formulate and prove a version of the Stone-von Neumann Theorem for every $ C^{\ast} $-dynamical system of the form $ (G,\mathbb{K}(\mathcal{H}),α) $, where $ G $ is a locally compact Hausdorff abelian group and $ \mathcal{H} $ is a Hilbert space. The novelty of our work stems from our representation of the Weyl Commutation Relation on Hilbert $ \mathbb{K}(\mathcal{H}) $-modules instead of just Hilbert spaces, and our introduction of two additional commutation relations, which are necessary to obtain a uniqueness theorem. Along the way, we apply one of our basic results on Hil…
This work provides a generalization of the Gelfand duality to the context of noncommutative locally $C^*$ algebras. Using a reformulation of a theorem proven by Dauns and Hofmann in the 60's we show that every locally $C^*$ algebra can be realized as the algebra of continuous sections of a $C^*$ bundle over a compactly generated topological space. This result is used then to show that on certain special cases locally $C^*$ algebras can be used to define certain sheaves of locally $C^*$ algebras that, inspired by the analogy with commutative geometry, we call noncommutative spaces. The last sec…
