We prove spectral and dynamical localization for the multi-dimensional random displacement model near the bottom of its spectrum by showing that the approach through multiscale analysis is applicable. In particular, we show that a previously known Lifshitz tail bound can be extended to our setting and prove a new Wegner estimate. A key tool is given by a quantitative form of a property of a related single-site Neumann problem which can be described as "bubbles tend to the corners".
We give a detailed survey of results obtained in the most recent half decade which led to a deeper understanding of the random displacement model, a model of a random Schrödinger operator which describes the quantum mechanics of an electron in a structurally disordered medium. These results started by identifying configurations which characterize minimal energy, then led to Lifshitz tail bounds on the integrated density of states as well as a Wegner estimate near the spectral minimum, which ultimately resulted in a proof of spectral and dynamical localization at low energy for the multi-dimens…
This paper is devoted to the study of the random displacement model on $\R^d$. We prove that, in the weak displacement regime, Anderson and dynamical localization holds near the bottom of the spectrum under a generic assumption on the single site potential and a fairly general assumption on the support of the possible displacements. This result follows from the proof of the existence of Lifshitz tail and of a Wegner estimate for the model under scrutiny.
We study low-energy properties of the random displacement model, a random Schrödinger operator describing an electron in a randomly deformed lattice. All periodic displacement configurations which minimize the bottom of the spectrum are characterized. While this configuration is essentially unique for dimension greater than one, there are infinitely many different minimizing configurations in the one-dimensional case. The latter leads to unusual low energy asymptotics for the integrated density of states of the one-dimensional random displacement model. For symmetric Bernoulli-distributed disp…
We investigate spectral properties of a discrete random displacement model, a Schrödinger operator on $\ell^2(\Z^d)$ with potential generated by randomly displacing finitely supported single-site terms from the points of a sublattice of $\Z^d$. In particular, we characterize the upper and lower edges of the almost sure spectrum. For a one-dimensional model with Bernoulli distributed displacements, we can show that the integrated density of states has a $1/\log^2$-singularity at external as well as internal band edges.
I consider random Schrödinger operators with exponentially decaying single site potential, which is allowed to change sign. For this model, I prove Anderson localization both in the sense of exponentially decaying eigenfunctions and dynamical localization. Furthermore, the results imply a Wegner-type estimate strong enough to use in classical forms of multi-scale analysis.
We study a random Schroedinger operator, the Laplacian with random Dirac delta potentials on a torus T^d_L = R^d/LZ^d, in the thermodynamic limit L\to\infty, for dimension d=2. The potentials are located on a randomly distorted lattice Z^2+ω, where the displacements are i.i.d. random variables sampled from a compactly supported probability density. We prove that, if the disorder is sufficiently weak, there exists a certain energy threshold E_0>0 above which exponential localization of the eigenfunctions must break down. In fact we can rule out any decay faster than a certain polynomial one. Ou…
In this note we review some results on localization and related properties for random Schrödinger operators arising in aperiodic media. These include the Anderson model associated to disordered quasycrystals and also the so-called Delone operators, operators associated to deterministic aperiodic structures.
We prove the complete spectral and the strong dynamical Anderson localization in a two-particle random Schrödinger operators with the Poisson potential. The results apply with sufficiently weak interaction between the particle system.
We prove Anderson localization at the internal band-edges for periodic magnetic Schr{ö}dinger operators perturbed by random vector potentials of Anderson-type. This is achieved by combining new results on the Lifshitz tails behavior of the integrated density of states for random magnetic Schr{ö}dinger operators, thereby providing the initial length-scale estimate, and a Wegner estimate, for such models.
We consider a one-dimensional continuum Anderson model where the potential decays in average like $|x|^{-α}$, $α>0$. We show dynamical localization for $0<α<\frac12$ and provide control on the decay of the eigenfunctions.
We consider Schrödinger operators in $\ell^2(\Z)$ whose potentials are obtained by randomly concatenating words from an underlying set $\mathcal{W}$ according to some probability measure $ν$ on $\mathcal{W}$. Our assumptions allow us to consider models with local correlations, such as the random dimer model or, more generally, random polymer models. We prove spectral localization and, away from a finite set of exceptional energies, dynamical localization for such models. These results are obtained by employing scattering theoretic methods together with Furstenberg's theorem to verify the neces…
We prove that, for a density of disorder $ρ$ small enough, a certain class of discrete random Schrödinger operators on $\Z^d$ with diluted potentials exhibits a Lifschitz behaviour from the bottom of the spectrum up to energies at a distance of the order $ρ^α$ from the bottom of the spectrum, with $α>2(d+1)/d$. This leads to localization for the energies in this zone for these low density models. The same results hold for operators on the continuous, and in particular, with Bernoulli or Poisson random potential.
We present a new, short, self-contained proof of localization properties of multi-dimensional continuum random Schrödinger operators in the fluctuation boundary regime. Our method is based on the recent extension of the fractional moment method to continuum models in by Aizenman et al, but does not require the random potential to satisfy a covering condition. Applications to random surface potentials and potentials with random displacements are included.
For the multi-particle Anderson model with correlated random potential in the continuum, we show under fairly general assumptions on the inter-particle interaction and the random external potential, the Anderson localization which consists of both the spectral, exponential localization and the strong dynamical localization. The localization results are proven near the lower spectral edge of the almost sure spectrum and the proofs require the uniform log-Hölder continuity assumption of the probability distribution functions of the random field in addition of the Rosenblatt's strongly mixing con…
In this paper we give a multi-scale analysis proof of \textit{power-law} localization for random operators on ${\Z}^d$ for \textit{arbitrary} $d\geq1$.
We prove Anderson localization (AL) and dynamical localization in expectation (EDL, also known as strong dynamical localization) for random CMV matrices for arbitrary distribution of i.i.d. Verblunsky coefficients.
We prove Anderson localization for the discrete Laplace operator on radial tree graphs with random branching numbers. Our method relies on the representation of the Laplace operator as the direct sum of half-line Jacobi matrices whose entries are non-degenerate, independent, identically distributed random variables with singular distributions.
A discussion of the method of multiscale analysis in the study of localization of random operators based on lectures given at \emph{Random Schrödinger operators: methods, results, and perspectives}, États de la recherche, Université Paris 13, June 2002
We prove exponential localization for the Schrödinger operator with a Poisson random potential at the bottom of the spectrum in any dimension. We also prove exponential localization in a prescribed interval for all large Poisson densities. In addition, we obtain dynamical localization and finite multiplicity of the eigenvalues.
We prove exponential and dynamical localization at low energies for the Schrödinger operator with an attractive Poisson random potential in any dimension. We also conclude that the eigenvalues in that spectral region of localization have finite multiplicity.
We study the region of complete localization in a class of random operators which includes random Schrödinger operators with Anderson-type potentials and classical wave operators in random media, as well as the Anderson tight-binding model. We establish new characterizations or criteria for this region of complete localization, given either by the decay of eigenfunction correlations or by the decay of Fermi projections. (These are necessary and sufficient conditions for the random operator to exhibit complete localization in this energy region.) Using the first type of characterization we prov…
This work establishes the Anderson localization in both the spectral exponential and the strong dynamical localization for the multi-particle Anderson tight-binding model with correlated but strongly mixing random external potential. The results are obtained near the lower edge of the spectrum of the multi-particle Hamiltonian. In particular, the exponential decay of the eigenfunctions is proved in the max-norm and the dynamical localization in the Hilbert-Schmidt norm. The proofs need the conditional probability distribution function of the random external stochastic processes to obey the uni…
We prove that certain random models associated with radial, tree-like, rooted quantum graphs exhibit Anderson localization at all energies. The two main examples are the random length model (RLM) and the random Kirchhoff model (RKM). In the RLM, the lengths of each generation of edges form a family of independent, identically distributed random variables (iid). For the RKM, the iid random variables are associated with each generation of vertices and moderate the current flow through the vertex. We consider extensions to various families of decorated graphs and prove stability of localization w…
We consider a two dimensional magnetic Schroedinger operator on a square lattice with a spatially stationary random magnetic field. We prove Anderson localization near the spectral edges. We use a new approach to establish a Wegner estimate that does not rely on the monotonicity of the energy on the random parameters.
We prove exponential and dynamical localization for the Schrödinger operator with a nonnegative Poisson random potential at the bottom of the spectrum in any dimension. We also conclude that the eigenvalues in that spectral region of localization have finite multiplicity. We prove similar localization results in a prescribed energy interval at the bottom of the spectrum provided the density of the Poisson process is large enough.
This note describes recent results on the localization properties of Random Quantum Walks on the d-dimensional lattice in a regime analogous to the large disorder regime by means of the Fractional Moments Method adapted to the unitary framework.
We consider a random Schrödinger operator on the binary tree with a random potential which is the sum of a random radially symmetric potential, $Q_r$, and a random transversally periodic potential, $κQ_t$, with coupling constant $κ$. Using a new one-dimensional dynamical systems approach combined with Jensen's inequality in hyperbolic space (our key estimate) we obtain a fractional moment estimate proving localization for small and large $κ$. Together with a previous result we therefore obtain a model with two Anderson transitions, from localization to delocalization and back to localization, …
We show that one-dimensional Schr{ö}dinger operators whose potentials arise by randomly concatenating words from an underlying set exhibit exponential dynamical localization (EDL) on any compact set which trivially intersects a finite set of critical energies. We do so by first giving a new proof of spectral localization for such operators and then showing that once one has the existence of a complete orthonormal basis of eigenfunctions (with probability one), the same estimates used to prove it naturally lead to a proof of the aforementioned EDL result. The EDL statements provide new localiza…
We consider Schrödinger operators on a class of periodic quantum graphs with randomly distributed Kirchhoff coupling constants at all vertices. Using the technique of self-adjoint extensions we obtain conditions for localization on quantum graphs in terms of finite volume criteria for some energy-dependent discrete Hamiltonians. These conditions hold in the strong disorder limit and at the spectral edges.
We prove spectral and dynamical localization on a cubic-lattice quantum graph with a random potential. We use multiscale analysis and show how to obtain the necessary estimates in analogy to the well-studied case of random Schroedinger operators.
In this paper we consider sparsely random potentials in 5 or more dimensional cubic lattice and exhibit localized and extended states. We identify also the mobility edge for a class of potentials going to infinity at infinity. Our treatment includes a large class of unperturbed selfadjoint opeartors commuting with the usual Laplacian on the lattice.
This paper studies a random differential equation with random switch perturbations. We explore how the maximum displacement from the equilibrium state depends on the statistical properties of time series of {the} random switches. We show a power law dependence between the upper bound of displacement and the frequency of random perturbation switches, and the slope of power law dependence is dependent on the specific distribution of the intervals between switching times. This result {suggests} a quantitative connection between frequency modulation and amplitude modulation under random perturbati…
We consider a two dimensional magnetic Schroedinger operator with a spatially stationary random magnetic field. We assume that the magnetic field has a positive lower bound and that it has Fourier modes on arbitrarily short scales. We prove the Wegner estimate at arbitrary energy, i.e. we show that the averaged density of states is finite throughout the whole spectrum. We also prove Anderson localization at the bottom of the spectrum.
We study a class of random block operators which appear as effective one-particle Hamiltonians for the anisotropic XY quantum spin chain in an exterior magnetic field given by an array of i.i.d. random variables. For arbitrary non-trivial single-site distribution of the magnetic field, we prove dynamical localization of these operators at non-zero energy.
We show persistence of both Anderson and dynamical localization in Schrödinger operators with non-positive (attractive) random decaying potential. We consider an Anderson-type Schrödinger operator with a non-positive ergodic random potential, and multiply the random potential by a decaying envelope function. If the envelope function decays slower than $|x|^{-2}$ at infinity, we prove that the operator has infinitely many eigenvalues below zero. For envelopes decaying as $|x|^{-α}$ at infinity, we determine the number of bound states below a given energy $E<0$, asymptotically as $α\downarrow 0$…
The spectral properties of the Laplacian on a class of quantum graphs with random metric structure are studied. Namely, we consider quantum graphs spanned by the simple $\ZZ^d$-lattice with $δ$-type boundary conditions at the vertices, and we assume that the edge lengths are randomly independently identically distributed. Under the assumption that the coupling constant at the vertices does not vanish, we show that the operator exhibits the Anderson localization at the bottom of the spectrum almost surely. We also study the case of other spectral edges.
We continue the investigations of Kirsch, Metzger and the second-named author [J. Stat. Phys. 143, 1035--1054 (2011)] on spectral properties of a certain type of random block operators. In particular, we establish an alternative version of a Wegner estimate and an improved result on Lifschitz tails at the internal band edges. Using these ingredients and the bootstrap multi-scale analysis, we also prove dynamical localization in a neighbourhood of the internal band edges.
In this paper we consider the localization properties of coupled harmonic oscillators in random media. Each of these oscillators is restricted to the lattice $\mathbb{Z}^d$. We show that for most states and an arbitrary choice of the random media, the long time localization for the coupled system holds in a time scale larger than the polynomial one.
We consider a d-dimensional random quantum walk with site-dependent random coin operators. The corresponding transition coefficients are characterized by deterministic amplitudes times independent identically distributed site-dependent random phases. When the deterministic transition amplitudes are close enough to those of a quantum walk which forbids propagation, we prove that dynamical localization holds for almost all random phases. This instance of Anderson localization implies that all quantum mechanical moments of the position operator are uniformly bounded in time and that spectral loca…
We consider transient one-dimensional random walks in random environment with zero asymptotic speed. An aging phenomenon involving the generalized Arcsine law is proved using the localization of the walk at the foot of "valleys" of height $\log t$. In the quenched setting, we also sharply estimate the distribution of the walk at time $t$.
We consider branching random walks in $d$-dimensional integer lattice with time-space i.i.d. offspring distributions. This model is known to exhibit a phase transition: If $d \ge 3$ and the environment is "not too random", then, the total population grows as fast as its expectation with strictly positive probability. If,on the other hand, $d \le 2$, or the environment is ``random enough", then the total population grows strictly slower than its expectation almost surely. We show the equivalence between the slow population growth and a natural localization property in terms of "replica overlap"…
We prove that a large class of $N\times N$ Gaussian random band matrices with band width $W$ exhibits dynamical Anderson localization at all energies when $W \ll N^{1/4}$. The proof uses the fractional moment method and an adaptive Mermin--Wagner style shift.
We present a family of finite-volume criteria which cover the regime of exponential decay for the fractional moments of Green functions of operators with random potentials. Such decay is a technically convenient characterization of localization for it is known to imply spectral localization, absence of level repulsion, dynamical localization and a related condition which plays a significant role in the quantization of the Hall conductance in two-dimensional Fermi gases. The constructive criteria also preclude fast power-law decay of the Green functions at mobility edges.
We study simple random walk on the class of random planar maps which can be encoded by a two-dimensional random walk with i.i.d. increments or a two-dimensional Brownian motion via a "mating-of-trees" type bijection. This class includes the uniform infinite planar triangulation (UIPT), the infinite-volume limits of random planar maps weighted by the number of spanning trees, bipolar orientations, or Schnyder woods they admit, and the $γ$-mated-CRT map for $γ\in (0,2)$. For each of these maps, we obtain an upper bound for the Green's function on the diagonal, an upper bound for the effective re…
In this paper, we prove a power-law version dynamical localization for a random operator $\mathrm{H}_ω$ on $\mathbb{Z}^d$ with long-range hopping. In breif, for the linear Schrödinger equation $$\mathrm{i}\partial_{t}u=\mathrm{H}_ωu, \quad u \in \ell^2(\mathbb{Z}^d), $$ the Sobolev norm of the solution with well localized initial state is bounded for any $t\geq 0$.
We prove long time Anderson localization for nonlinear random Schroedinger equation in $\ell^2$ by making a Birkoff normal form type transform to creat an energy barrier where there is essentially no mode propagation. One of the new features is that this transform is in a small neighborhood enabling us to treat "rough" data, where there are no moment conditions. The formulation of the present result is inspired by the RAGE theorem.
We consider $(1+1)$-dimensional directed polymers in a random potential and provide sufficient conditions guaranteeing joint localization. Joint localization means that for typical realizations of the environment, and for polymers started at different starting points, all the associated endpoint distributions localize in a common random region that does not grow with the length of the polymer. In particular, we prove that joint localization holds when the reference random walk of the polymer model is either a simple symmetric lattice walk or a Gaussian random walk. We also prove that the very …
