We consider a one-dimensional continuum Anderson model where the potential decays in average like $|x|^{-α}$, $α>0$. We show dynamical localization for $0<α<\frac12$ and provide control on the decay of the eigenfunctions.
In this paper we consider some Anderson type models, with decaying randomness and the free parts having long range tails. The randomness may decay at different rates in different directions, though in majority of directions we require some sort of short range decay. We show that there is pure a.c. spectrum and some pure point spectrum in such models.
This short note is a complement to our recent paper [2] where we established strong dynamical localization for a class of multi-particle Anderson models in a Euclidean space with an alloy-type random potential and a sub-exponentially decaying interaction of infinite range. We show that the localized eigenfunctions at low energies actually decay exponentially fast. This improves the results by Fauser and Warzel who established sub-exponential decay of eigenfunctions in presence of a sub-exponentially decaying interaction.
We show persistence of both Anderson and dynamical localization in Schrödinger operators with non-positive (attractive) random decaying potential. We consider an Anderson-type Schrödinger operator with a non-positive ergodic random potential, and multiply the random potential by a decaying envelope function. If the envelope function decays slower than $|x|^{-2}$ at infinity, we prove that the operator has infinitely many eigenvalues below zero. For envelopes decaying as $|x|^{-α}$ at infinity, we determine the number of bound states below a given energy $E<0$, asymptotically as $α\downarrow 0$…
We consider a one-dimensional Anderson model where the potential decays in average like $n^{-α}$, $α>0$. This simple model is known to display a rich phase diagram with different kinds of spectrum arising as the decay rate $α$ varies. We review an article of Kiselev, Last and Simon where the authors show a.c. spectrum in the super-critical case $α>\frac12$, a transition from singular continuous to pure point spectrum in the critical case $α=\frac12$, and dense pure point spectrum in the sub-critical case $α<\frac12$. We present complete proofs of the cases $α\ge\frac12$ and simplify some argum…
I consider random Schrödinger operators with exponentially decaying single site potential, which is allowed to change sign. For this model, I prove Anderson localization both in the sense of exponentially decaying eigenfunctions and dynamical localization. Furthermore, the results imply a Wegner-type estimate strong enough to use in classical forms of multi-scale analysis.
We prove the Wegner bounds for the one-dimensional interacting multi-particle Anderson models in the continuum. The results apply to singular probability distribution functions such as the Bernoulli's measures. The proofs need the amplitude of the inter-particle interaction potential to be sufficiently weak. As a consequence, the results imply the Anderson localization via the multi-scale analysis.
The methods used to prove the main result must be incorrect, as they can be used to arrive at a contradiction with previously known results. Thus the paper was withdrawn.
The fractional moment method, which was initially developed in the discrete context for the analysis of the localization properties of lattice random operators, is extended to apply to random Schrödinger operators in the continuum. One of the new results for continuum operators are exponentially decaying bounds for the mean value of transition amplitudes, for energies throughout the localization regime. An obstacle which up to now prevented an extension of this method to the continuum is the lack of a uniform bound on the Lifshitz-Krein spectral shift associated with the local potential terms.…
In this short note, we prove positivity of the Lyapunov exponent for 1D continuum Anderson models by leveraging some classical tools from inverse spectral theory. The argument is much simpler than the existing proof due to Damanik--Sims--Stolz, and it covers a wider variety of random models. Along the way we note that a Large Deviation Theorem holds uniformly on compacts.
For the weakly interacting one-dimensional multi-particle Anderson model in the continuum space of configurations, we prove the spectral exponential and the strong dynamical localization. The results require the interaction amplitude to be sufficiently small. The general strategy uses the multi-scale analysis bounds. Actually, we show that the multi-scale analysis bounds of the single particle model remain stable when passing to multi-particle systems, provided that the inter-particle interaction is sufficiently small. The common probability distribution of the i.i.d. random external potential…
We give a proof of dynamical localization in the form of exponential decay of spatial correlations in the time evolution for the one-dimensional continuum Anderson model via the fractional moments method. This follows via exponential decay of fractional moments of the Green function, which is shown to hold at arbitrary energy and for any single-site distribution with bounded, compactly supported density.
We study one-dimensional, continuum Bernoulli-Anderson models with general single-site potentials and prove positivity of the Lyapunov exponent away from a discrete set of critical energies. The proof is based on Fürstenberg's Theorem. The set of critical energies is described explicitly in terms of the transmission and reflection coefficients for scattering at the single-site potential. In examples we discuss the asymptotic behavior of generalized eigenfunctions at critical energies.
We consider the multi-particle Anderson model on the lattice with infinite range but sub-exponentially decaying interaction and show the Anderson localization consisting of the spectral exponential and the strong dynamical localization. In particular, the dynamical localization is proved int he Hilbert-Schmidt norm. The results concern very singular probability distributions such as the Bernoulli's measures.
We discuss the techniques and results of the multi-particle Anderson localization theory for disordered quantum systems with nontrivial interaction. After a detailed presentation of the approach developed earlier by Aizenman and Warzel, we extend their results to the models with exponentially decaying, infinite-range interaction.
The Anderson Hamiltonian $H_0=-Δ+V(x,ω)$ is considered, where $V$ is a random potential of Bernoulli type. The operator $H_0$ is perturbed by a non-random, continuous potential $-w(x) \leq 0$, decaying at infinity. It will be shown that the borderline between finitely, and infinitely many negative eigenvalues of the perturbed operator, is achieved with a decay of the potential $-w(x)$ as $O(\ln^{-2/d} |x|)$.
We study effects of a bounded and compactly supported perturbation on multi-dimensional continuum random Schrödinger operators in the region of complete localisation. Our main emphasis is on Anderson orthogonality for random Schrödinger operators. Among others, we prove that Anderson orthogonality does occur for Fermi energies in the region of complete localisation with a non-zero probability. This partially confirms recent non-rigorous findings [V. Khemani et al., Nature Phys. 11, 560-565 (2015)]. The spectral shift function plays an important role in our analysis of Anderson orthogonality. W…
We prove localization at the bottom of the spectrum for a random Schrödinger operator in the continuum with a single-site potential probability distribution supported by a Cantor set of zero Lebesgue measure. This distribution is too singular to be treated by the usual methods. In particular, an "a priori" Wegner estimate is not available. To prove the result we perform a multiscale analysis following the work of Bourgain and Kenig for the Bernoulli-Anderson Hamiltonian, and obtain the required Wegner estimate scale by scale. To do so, we generalize their argument based on Sperner's Lemma by r…
We show absence of energy levels repulsion for the eigenvalues of random Schrödinger operators in the continuum. We prove that, in the localization region at the bottom of the spectrum, the properly rescaled eigenvalues of a continuum Anderson Hamiltonian are distributed as a Poisson point process with intensity measure given by the density of states. We also obtain simplicity of the eigenvalues. We derive a Minami estimate for continuum Anderson Hamiltonians. We also give a simple and transparent proof of Minami's estimate for the (discrete) Anderson model.
Following [7,8], we analyze regularity properties of single-site probability distributions of the random potential and of the Integrated Density of States (IDS) in the Anderson models with infinite-range interactions and arbitrary nontrivial probability distributions of the site potentials. In the present work, we study $2$-particle Anderson Hamiltonians on a lattice and prove spectral and strong dynamical localization at low energies, with exponentially decaying eigenfunctions, for a class of site potentials featuring a power-law decay.
We establish strong dynamical localization for a class of multi-particle Anderson models in a Euclidean space with an alloy-type random potential and a sub-exponentially decaying interaction of infinite range. For the first time in the mathematical literature, the uniform decay bounds on the eigenfunction correlators at low energies are proved, in the multi-particle continuous configuration space, in the norm-distance and not in the Hausdorff pseudo-metric.
We consider the multi-particle Anderson model in the continuum and show that under some mild assumptions on the inter-particle interaction and the external potential, its lower spectral edge is almost surely constant and is the same with that of the single-particle model. We then obtain the lifshitz asymptotics for the multi-particle hamiltonian in the continuum near the bottom of the spectrum.
We use scattering theoretic methods to prove strong dynamical and exponential localization for one dimensional, continuum, Anderson-type models with singular distributions; in particular the case of a Bernoulli distribution is covered. The operators we consider model alloys composed of at least two distinct types of randomly dispersed atoms. Our main tools are the reflection and transmission coefficients for compactly supported single site perturbations of a periodic background which we use to verify the necessary hypotheses of multi-scale analysis. We show that non-reflectionless single sites…
In this paper, we establish Anderson localization for the quantum kicked rotor model. More precisely, we proved that \begin{equation*} H=\tanπ\left(x_0+my_0+\frac{m(m-1)}{2}ω\right) δ_{mn}+εS_ϕ\end{equation*} has pure point spectrum with exponentially decaying eigenfunctions for almost all $ω\in DC$ (diophantine condition).
We consider perturbations of quasi-periodic Schrödinger operators on the integer lattice with analytic sampling functions by decaying potentials and seek decay conditions under which various spectral properties are preserved. In the (almost) reducibility regime we prove that for perturbations with finite first moment, the essential spectrum remains purely absolutely continuous and the newly created discrete spectrum must be finite in each gap of the unperturbed spectrum. We also prove that for fixed phase, Anderson localization occurring for almost all frequencies in the regime of positive Lya…
We give a new proof of correlation estimates for arbitrary moments of the resolvent of random Schrödinger operators on the lattice that generalizes and extends the correlation estimate of Minami for the second moment. We apply this moment bound to obtain a new $n$-level Wegner-type estimate that measures eigenvalue correlations through an upper bound on the probability that a local Hamiltonian has at least $n$ eigenvalues in a given energy interval. Another consequence of the correlation estimates is that the results on the Poisson statistics of energy level spacing and the simplicity of the e…
We study continuous Anderson Hamiltonians with non-degenerate single site probability distribution of bounded support, without any regularity condition on the single site probability distribution. We prove the existence of a strong form of localization at the bottom of the spectrum, which includes Anderson localization (pure point spectrum with exponentially decaying eigenfunctions) with finite multiplicity of eigenvalues, dynamical localization (no spreading of wave packets under the time evolution), decay of eigenfunctions correlations, and decay of the Fermi projections. We also prove log-H…
We introduce a new approach for proving localization (pure point spectrum with exponentially decaying eigenfunctions, dynamical localization) for the Anderson model at high disorder. In contrast to the usual strategy, we do not study finite volume Green's functions. Instead, we perform a multiscale analysis based on finite volume eigensystems (eigenvalues and eigenfunctions). Information about eigensystems at a given scale is used to derive information about eigensystems at larger scales. This eigensystem multiscale analysis treats all energies of the finite volume operator at the same time, e…
We provide a complete and self-contained proof of spectral and dynamical localization for the one-dimensional Anderson model, starting from the positivity of the Lyapunov exponent provided by Fürstenberg's theorem. That is, a Schrödinger operator in $\ell^2(\mathbb{Z})$ whose potential is given by independent identically distributed (i.i.d.) random variables almost surely has pure point spectrum with exponentially decaying eigenfunctions and its unitary group exhibits exponential off-diagonal decay, uniformly in time. This is achieved by way of a new result: for the Anderson model, one typical…
We study multi-particle interactive quantum disordered systems on a polynomially-growing countable connected graph (Z,E). The novelty is to give localization bounds uniform in finite or infinite volumes (subgraphs) in Z^N as well as for the whole of Z^N. Such bounds are proved here by means of a comprehensive fixed-energy multi-particle multi-scale analysis. Another feature of the paper is that we consider -- for the first time in the literature -- an infinite-range (although fast-decaying) interaction between particles. For the models under consideration we establish (1) exponential spectral …
We give a widely self-contained introduction to the mathematical theory of the Anderson model. After defining the Anderson model and determining its almost sure spectrum, we prove localization properties of the model. Here we discuss spectral as well as dynamical localization and provide proofs based on the fractional moments (or Aizenman-Molchanov) method. We also discuss, in less self-contained form, the extension of the fractional moment method to the continuum Anderson model. Finally, we mention major open problems. These notes are based on several lecture series which the author gave at t…
We study the spectrum and dynamics of a one-dimensional discrete Dirac operator in a random potential obtained by damping an i.i.d. environment with an envelope of type $n^{-α}$ for $α>0$. We recover all the spectral regimes previously obtained for the analogue Anderson model in a random decaying potential, namely: absolutely continuous spectrum in the super-critical region $α>\frac12$; a transition from pure point to singular continuous spectrum in the critical region $α=\frac12$; and pure point spectrum in the sub-critical region $α<\frac12$. From the dynamical point of view, delocalization …
We consider a magnetic Schrödinger operator in two dimensions. The magnetic field is given as the sum of a large and constant magnetic field and a random magnetic field. Moreover, we allow for an additional deterministic potential as well as a magnetic field which are both periodic. We show that the spectrum of this operator is contained in broadened bands around the Landau levels and that the edges of these bands consist of pure point spectrum with exponentially decaying eigenfunctions. The proof is based on a recent Wegner estimate obtained in \cite{EH2} and a multiscale analysis.
We present a new approach to the eigensystem multiscale analysis (EMSA) for random Schrödinger operators that relies on the Wegner estimate. The EMSA treats all energies of the finite volume operator in an energy interval at the same time, simultaneously establishing localization of all eigenfunctions with eigenvalues in the energy interval with high probability. It implies all the usual manifestations of localization (pure point spectrum with exponentially decaying eigenfunctions, dynamical localization). The new method removes the restrictive level spacing hypothesis used in the previous ver…
We use a bootstrap argument to enhance the eigensystem multiscale analysis, introduced by Elgart and Klein for proving localization for the Anderson model at high disorder. The eigensystem multiscale analysis studies finite volume eigensystems, not finite volume Green's functions. It yields pure point spectrum with exponentially decaying eigenfunctions and dynamical localization. The starting hypothesis for the eigensystem bootstrap multiscale analysis only requires the verification of polynomial decay of the finite volume eigenfunctions, at some sufficiently large scale, with some minimal pro…
In this paper we present a class of Anderson type operators with independent, non-stationary (non-decaying) random potentials supported on a subset of positive density in the odd-dimensional lattice and prove the existence of pure absolutely continuous spectrum in the middle of the band for small disorder.
We present an eigensystem multiscale analysis for proving localization (pure point spectrum with exponentially decaying eigenfunctions, dynamical localization) for the Anderson model in an energy interval. In particular, it yields localization for the Anderson model in a nonempty interval at the bottom of the spectrum. This eigensystem multiscale analysis in an energy interval treats all energies of the finite volume operator at the same time, establishing level spacing and localization of eigenfunctions with eigenvalues in the energy interval in a fixed box with high probability. In contrast …
We study the multi-particle Anderson model in the continuum and show that under some mild assumptions on the random external potential and the inter-particle interaction, for any finite number of particles, the multi-particle lower edges of the spectrum are almost surely constant in absence of ergodicity. We stress that this result is not quite obvious and has to be handled carefully. In addition, we prove the spectral exponential and the strong dynamical localization of the continuous multi-particle Anderson model at low energy. The proof based on the multi-particle multi-scale analysis bound…
We prove quantum dynamical lower bounds for one-dimensional continuum Schrödinger operators that possess critical energies for which there is slow growth of transfer matrix norms and a large class of compactly supported initial states. This general result is applied to a number of models, including the Bernoulli-Anderson model with a constant single-site potential.
Following [5], we analyze regularity properties of single-site probability distributions of the random potential and of the Integrated Density of States (IDS) in the Anderson models with infinite-range interactions. In the present work, we study in detail a class of polynomially decaying interaction potentials of rather artificial (piecewise-constant) form, and give a complete proof of infinite smoothness of the IDS in an arbitrarily large finite domain subject to the fluctuations of the entire, infinite random environment. A variant of this result, based as in [5] on the harmonic analysis of …
We consider one-dimensional discrete Dirac models in vanishing random environments. In a previous work [6], we showed that these models exhibit a rich phase diagram in terms of their spectrum as a function of the rate of decay of the random potential. This article is devoted to their spectral statistics. We show that the rescaled spectrum converges to the clock process for fast decay and to the Schrödinger/Sine processes from random matrix theory for critical decay. This way, we recover all the regimes previously identified for the Anderson model in a similar context [25]. Poisson statistics, …
We consider continuum one-dimensional Schrödinger operators with potentials that are given by a sum of a suitable background potential and an Anderson-type potential whose single-site distribution has a continuous and compactly supported density. We prove exponential decay of the expectation of the finite volume correlators, uniform in any compact energy region, and deduce from this dynamical and spectral localization. The proofs implement a continuum analog of the method Kunz and Souillard developed in 1980 to study discrete one-dimensional Schrödinger operators with potentials of the form ba…
We prove that certain natural random variables associated with the local eigenvalue statistics for generalized lattice Anderson models constructed with finite-rank perturbations are compound Poisson distributed. This distribution is characterized by the fact that the Levy measure is supported on at most a finite set determined by the rank. The proof relies on a Minami-type estimate for finite-rank perturbations. For Anderson-type continuum models on $\R^d$, we prove a similar result for certain natural random variables associated with the local eigenvalue statistics. We prove that the compound…
For the multi-particle Anderson model with correlated random potential in the continuum, we show under fairly general assumptions on the inter-particle interaction and the random external potential, the Anderson localization which consists of both the spectral, exponential localization and the strong dynamical localization. The localization results are proven near the lower spectral edge of the almost sure spectrum and the proofs require the uniform log-Hölder continuity assumption of the probability distribution functions of the random field in addition of the Rosenblatt's strongly mixing con…
In this paper we consider two classes of random Hamiltonians on $L^2(\RR^d)$ one that imitates the lattice case and the other a Schrödinger operator with non-decaying, non-sparse potential both of which exhibit a.c. spectrum. In the former case we also know the existence of dense pure point spectrum for some disorder thus exhibiting spectral transition valid for the Bethe lattice and expected for the Anderson model in higher dimension.
We show that the Anderson model has a transition from localization to delocalization at exactly 2 dimensional growth rate on antitrees with normalized edge weights which are certain discrete graphs. The kinetic part has a one-dimensional structure allowing a description through transfer matrices which involve some Schur complement. For such operators we introduce the notion of having one propagating channel and extend theorems from the theory of one-dimensional Jacobi operators that relate the behavior of transfer matrices with the spectrum. These theorems are then applied to the considered mo…
We study the statistics of Dirichlet eigenvalues of the random Schrödinger operator $-ε^{-2}Δ^{(\text{d})}+ξ^{(ε)}(x)$, with $Δ^{(\text{d})}$ the discrete Laplacian on $\mathbb Z^d$ and $ξ^{(ε)}(x)$ uniformly bounded independent random variables, on sets of the form $D_ε:=\{x\in \mathbb Z^d\colon xε\in D\}$ for $D\subset \mathbb R^d$ bounded, open and with a smooth boundary. If $\mathbb Eξ^{(ε)}(x)=U(xε)$ holds for some bounded and continuous $U\colon D\to \mathbb R$, we show that, as $ε\downarrow0$, the $k$-th eigenvalue converges to the $k$-th Dirichlet eigenvalue of the homogenized operator…
It is shown that in a large class of disordered systems with non-degenerate disorder, in presence of non-local interactions, the Integrated Density of States (IDS) is at least Hölder continuous in one dimension and universally infinitely differentiable in higher dimensions. This result applies also to the IDS in any finite volume subject to the random potential induced by an ambient, infinitely extended disordered media. Dimension one is critical: in the Bernoulli case, within the class of exponential interactions, the IDS measure undergoes continuity phase transitions, from absolutely continu…
The two main results of the article are concerned with Anderson Localization for one-dimensional lattice Schroedinger operators with quasi-periodic potentials with d frequencies. First, in the case d = 1 or 2, it is proved that the spectrum is pure-point with exponentially decaying eigenfunctions for all potentials (defined in terms of a trigonometric polynomial on the d-dimensional torus) for which the Lyapounov exponents are strictly positive for all frequencies and all energies. Second, for every non-constant real-analytic potential and with a Diophantine set of d frequencies, a lower bound…
We adapt a simplified version of the Multi-Scale Analysis presented in \cite{C11} to multi-particle tight-binding Anderson models. Combined with a recent eigenvalue concentration bound for multi-particle systems \cite{C10}, the new method leads to a simple proof of the multi-particle dynamical localization with more optimal decay bounds on eigenfunctions than in \cite{CS09b,AW09a,AW09b}, for a large class of strongly mixing random potentials. All earlier results required the random potential to be IID. We also extend the result on multi-particle localization to models with a rapidly decaying i…
We study Schrödinger operators on $L^2 (\RR^d)$ and $\ell^2(\ZZ^d)$ with a random potential of alloy-type. The single-site potential is assumed to be exponentially decaying but not necessarily of fixed sign. In the continuum setting we require a generalized step-function shape. Wegner estimates are bounds on the average number of eigenvalues in an energy interval of finite box restrictions of these types of operators. In the described situation a Wegner estimate which is polynomial in the volume of the box and linear in the size of the energy interval holds. We apply the established Wegner est…
We consider random Schrödinger equations on $\bZ^d$ for $d\ge 3$ with identically distributed random potential. Denote by $λ$ the coupling constant and $ψ_t$ the solution with initial data $ψ_0$. The space and time variables scale as $x\sim λ^{-2 -κ/2}, t \sim λ^{-2 -κ}$ with $0< κ< κ_0(d)$. We prove that, in the limit $λ\to 0$, the expectation of the Wigner distribution of $ψ_t$ converges weakly to a solution of a heat equation in the space variable $x$ for arbitrary $L^2$ initial data. The diffusion coefficient is uniquely determined by the kinetic energy associated to the momentum $v$. This…
In this paper we study random perturbations of first order elliptic operators with periodic potentials. We are mostly interested in Hamiltonians modeling graphene antidot lattices with impurities. The unperturbed operator $H_0 := D_S + V_0$ is the sum of a Dirac-like operator $D_S$ plus a periodic matrix valued potential $V_0$, and is assumed to have an open gap. The random potential $V_ω$ is of Anderson-type with independent, identically distributed coupling constants and moving centers, with absolutely continuous probability distributions. We prove band edge localization, namely that there e…
