The standard derivation of Schroedinger's equation from a Lorentz-invariant Feynman path integral consists in taking first the limit of infinite speed of light and then the limit of short time slice. In this order of limits the light cone of the path integral disappears, giving rise to an instantaneous spread of the wave function to the entire space. We ascribe the failure of Schroedinger's equation to retain the light cone of the path integral to the very nature of the limiting process: it is a regular expansion of a singular approximation problem, because the boundary conditions of the path integral on the light cone are lost in this limit. We propose a distinguished limit, which produces an intermediate model between non-relativistic and relativistic quantum mechanics: it produces Schroedinger's equation and preserves the zero boundary conditions on and outside the original light cone of the path integral. These boundary conditions relieve the Schroedinger equation of several annoying, seemingly unrelated unphysical artifacts, including non-analytic wave functions, spontaneous appearance of discontinuities, non-existence of moments when the initial wave function has a jump discontinuity (e.g., a collapsed wave function after a measurement), the EPR paradox, and so on. The practical implications of the present formulation are yet to be seen.
We outline a general method of obtaining exact solutions of Schroedinger equations with a position dependent effective mass. Exact solutions of several potentials including shape invariant potentials have also been obtained.
We discuss a family of quasi-distributions (s-ordered Wigner functions of Agarwal and Wolf) and its connection to the so called phase space representation of the Schroedinger equation. It turns out that although Wigner functions satisfy the Schroedinger equation in phase space they have completely different interpretation.
The intertwining operator technique is applied to difference Schroedinger equations with operator-valued coefficients. It is shown that these equations appear naturally when a discrete basis is used for solving a multichannel Schroedinger equation. New families of exactly solvable multichannel Hamiltonians are found.
We show that a point particle moving in space-time on entwined-pair paths generates Schroedinger's equation in a static potential in the appropriate continuum linit. This provides a new realist context for the Schroedinger equation within the domain of classical stochastic processes. It also suggests that self-quantizing systems may provide considerable insight into conventional quantum mechanics.
We derive an exact propagation scheme for nonlinear Schroedinger equations. This scheme is entirely analogous to the propagation of linear Schroedinger equations. We accomplish this by defining a special operator whose algebraic properties ensure the correct propagation. As applications, we provide a simple proof of a recent conjecture regarding higher-order integrators for the Gross-Pitaevskii equation, extend it to multi-component equations, and to a new class of integrators.
The Schroedinger equation with one and two dimensional potentials are solved in the frame work of the sl(2) Lie algebra. Eigenfunctions of the Schroedinger equation for various asymmetric double-well potentials have been determined and the eigenstates are expressed in terms of the orthogonal polynomials. The solution of the double-well potential in two dimension have been analyzed.
Canonical coordinates for both the Schroedinger and the nonlinear Schroedinger equations are introduced, making more transparent their Hamiltonian structures. It is shown that the Schroedinger equation, considered as a classical field theory, shares with the nonlinear Schroedinger, and more generally with Liouville completely integrable field theories, the existence of a "recursion operator" which allows for the construction of infinitely many conserved functionals pairwise commuting with respect to the corresponding Poisson bracket. The approach may provide a good starting point to get a clea…
A supersymmetric technique for the solution of the effective mass Schrö% dinger equation is proposed. Exact solutions of the Schroedinger equation corresponding to a number of potentials are obtained. The potentials are fully isospectral with the original potentials. The conditions for the shape invariance of the potentials are discussed.
Chains of Darboux transformations for the matrix Schroedinger equation are considered. Matrix generalization of the well-known for the scalar equation Crum-Krein formulas for the resulting action of such chains is given.
We discuss a new approach to solve the low lying states of the Schroedinger equation. For a fairly large class of problems, this new approach leads to convergent iterative solutions, in contrast to perturbative series expansions. These convergent solutions include the long standing difficult problem of a quartic potential with either symmetric or asymmetric minima.
A useful semiclassical method to calculate eigenfunctions of the Schroedinger equation is the mapping to a well-known ordinary differential equation, as for example Airy's equation. In this paper we generalize the mapping procedure to the nonlinear Schroedinger equation or Gross-Pitaevskii equation describing the macroscopic wave function of a Bose-Einstein condensate. The nonlinear Schroedinger equation is mapped to the second Painleve equation, which is one of the best-known differential equations with a cubic nonlinearity. A quantization condition is derived from the connection formulae of …
For the unitary operator, solution of the Schroedinger equation corresponding to a time-varying Hamiltonian, the relation between the Magnus and the product of exponentials expansions can be expressed in terms of a system of first order differential equations in the parameters of the two expansions. A method is proposed to compute such differential equations explicitly and in a closed form.
We construct semiclassical solutions of the symplectically covariant Schroedinger phase-space equation rigorously studied in a previous paper; we use for this purpose an adaptation of Littlejohn's nearby-orbit method. We take the opportunity to discuss in some detail the so fruitful notion of squeezed coherent state and the action of the metaplectic group on these states.
The convergent iterative procedure for solving the groundstate Schroedinger equation is extended to derive the excitation energy and the wave function of the low-lying excited states. The method is applied to the one-dimensional quartic potential problem. The results show that the iterative solution converges rapidly when the coupling $g$ is not too small.
We revisit a recent discussion about the boundary condition at the origin in the Schroedinger radial equation for central potentials. Using a slight modification of the usual spherical coordinates, the origin of a previously reported Dirac delta function term at the origin is clearly shown up. As a consequence, a vanishing boundary condition at the origin must be imposed in solving the radial equation, regardless the kind of potential.
The stationary nonlinear Schroedinger equation, or Gross-Pitaevskii equation, is studied for the cases of a single delta potential and a delta-shell potential. These model systems allow analytical solutions, and thus provide useful insight into the features of stationary bound, scattering and resonance states of the nonlinear Schroedinger equation. For the single delta potential, the influence of the potential strength and the nonlinearity is studied as well as the transition from bound to scattering states. Furthermore, the properties of resonance states for a repulsive delta-shell potential …
We present an explicit convergent iterative solution for the lowest energy state of the Schroedinger equation with a generalized double well potential $V=\frac{g^2}{2}(x^2-1)^2(x^2+a)$. The condition for the convergence of the iteration procedure and the dependence of the shape of the groundstate wave function on the parameter $a$ are discussed.
The Schroedinger equation with scalar and vector potentials is the continuum limit of any coherent hopping process (where position eigenstates superpose with neighbouring eigenstates after a time step) whose hopping amplitudes are homogeneous in quadratic order of the inverse lattice spacing, inhomogeneous in first order, and satisfying a summability condition with respect to higher-than-next neighbours.
In this paper we derive the Schroedinger equation by assuming it describes the time evolution of a deterministic and reversible process that leaves at each moment in time a different observable well defined; that is, it allows an accurate prediction for it. We also derive an expression for the well defined observable and apply this expression to the cases of spin precession and a free particle.
We propose a general method for constructing quasi-exactly solvable potentials with three analytic eigenstates. These potentials can be real or complex functions but the spectrum is real. A comparison with other methods is also performed.
There has been a recent tendency to apply Schroedinger's wave equation to macroscopic domains, from Bose-Einstein condensates in neutron stars to planetary orbits. In these applications a hydrodynamical interpretation, involving vortices in some 'fluid' medium is often given. The vortex picture appears surprising in light of more traditional interpretations of Schroedinger's equation, and indeed often appears to rely on ad hoc analogies. The purpose of this letter is to examine the vortex hypothesis in light of a simple, transparent mathematical framework. We find that Schroedinger's equation …
The motion of a particle is studied in a random space-time. It is assumed that the velocity is small enough for the non-relativistic approximation to be valid. The randomness of the metric induces a diffusion in coordinate space. Hence it is shown that the evolution of the probability density is given by Schroedinger equation.
An algebraic method of constructing potentials for which the Schroedinger equation with position dependent mass can be solved exactly is presented. A general form of the generators of su(1,1) algebra has been employed with a unified approach to the problem. Our systematic approach reproduces a number of earlier results and also leads to some novelties. We show that the solutions of the Schroedinger equation with position dependent mass are free from the choice of parameters for position dependent mass. Two classes of potentials are constructed that include almost all exactly solvable potential…
The role of double humped states in spreading of wave packets for the nonlinear Schroedinger equation (NLSE) with a random potential is explored and the spreading mechanism is unraveled. Comparison with an NLSE with a double-well potential is made. There are two independent affects of the nonlinearity on the double humped states for the NLSE: coupling to other states and destruction. The interplay between these effects is discussed.
The trajectory of motion of a scattering electron in the Coulomb potential from the wave function of the Schroedinger equation is presented in two ways, spherical polar coordinates and Temple coordinates, and is compared with each other and with the corresponding motion of classical mechanics. A good correspondence among dynamics by wave functions and the classical dynamics has been acknowledged by comparing computed examples.Detailed computing examples discriminate the optimal dynamics of the wave function that should be verified by an experiment.
In this paper we consider a class of coupled nonlinear Schroedinger equations for the fields $ψ_i$ containing complex nonlinearities, that has been obtained by requiring that the norms $|ψ_i|^2$ are conserved densities. For this class of equations we introduce a Cole-Hopf like transformation, whose effect is to reduce the complex nonlinearities into real ones, this way reducing the continuity equations of the system to the standard bilinear form. Some examples are presented to illustrate the applicability of the method. Pacs numbers: 03.50.-z, 03.65.-w, 11.30.Na, 11.40.Dw Keywords: Coupled non…
Systems governed by the Non-linear Schroedinger Equation (NLSE) with various external PT-symmetric potentials are considered. Exact solutions have been obtained for the same through the method of ansatz, some of them being solitonic in nature. It is found that only the unbroken PT-symmetric phase is realized in these systems, characterized by real energies.
We point out that the presence of a term proportional to the scalar curvature in the Schroedinger equation in curved space can easily be detected in atomic spectra with Russel-Saunders coupling by a violation of the Lande interval rule for adjacent levels E_J-E_{J-1} propto J.
We construct a general algorithm generating the analytic eigenfunctions as well as eigenvalues of one-dimensional stationary Schroedinger Hamiltonians. Both exact and quasi-exact Hamiltonians enter our formalism but we focus on quasi-exact interactions for which no such general approach has been considered before. In particular we concentrate on a generalized sextic oscillator but also on the Lame and the screened Coulomb potentials.
Sturm-Schroedinger equations $Hψ=E Wψ$ with $H\neq H^\dagger$ and $W\neq W^\dagger \neq I$ are considered, with a weak point of the theory lying in the purely numerical matrix-inversion form of the double-series definition of the necessary metric operator $Θ$ in the physical Hilbert space of states [M. Znojil, J. Phys. A: Math. Theor. 41 (2008) 215304]. This shortcoming is removed here via an amended, single-series definition of $Θ$.
We construct arbitrary-order Darboux transformations for Schroedinger equations with energy-dependent potential and position-dependent mass within the Dunkl formalism. Our construction is based on a point transformation that interrelates our equations with the standard Schroedinger case. We apply our method to generate several solvable Dunkl-Schroedinger equations.
A transformation is found between the one dimensional Schroedinger equation and a pendulum problem. It is demonstrated how to construct exact solutions with the resulted pendulum equation. The relation of this transformation to the Zakharov-Shabat equations is pointed out.
Within the framework of stochastic Schroedinger equations, we show that the correspondence between statevector equations and ensemble equations is infinitely many to one, and we discuss the consequences. We also generalize the results of [Phys. Lett. A 224, p. 25 (1996)] to the case of more general complex Gaussian noises and analyze the two important cases of purely real and purely imaginary stochastic processes.
It is shown that for a class of position dependent mass Schroedinger equation the shape invariance condition is equivalent to a potential symmetry algebra. Explicit realization of such algebras have been obtained for some shape invariant potentials.
In this paper we give a sharper condition for the blow-up of the solution to a nonlinear Schroedinger equation with free/Stark/quadratic potential by improving the well known Zakharov-Glassey's method.
Within the framework of self-adjoint operator of time in non-relativistic quantum mechanics the equation describing change of the state of quantum system with respect to energy is introduced. The operator of time appears to be the generator of the change of energy while the operator of energy, that is conjugate to the operator of time, generates time evolution in this proposal. Two examples, one with discrete time and the other with continuous one, are given and the generalization of Schroedinger equation is proposed.
We analyze the extension of the well known relation between Brownian motion and Schroedinger equation to the family of Levy processes. We consider a Levy-Schroedinger equation where the usual kinetic energy operator - the Laplacian - is generalized by means of a selfadjoint, pseudodifferential operator whose symbol is the logarithmic characteristic of an infinitely divisible law. The Levy-Khintchin formula shows then how to write down this operator in an integro--differential form. When the underlying Levy process is stable we recover as a particular case the fractional Schroedinger equation. …
We formulate an adiabatic approximation for the imaginary-time Schroedinger equation. The obtained adiabatic condition consists of two inequalities, one of which coincides with the conventional adiabatic condition for the real-time Schroedinger equation, but the other does not. We apply this adiabatic approximation to the analysis of Markovian dynamics of the classical Ising model, which can be formulated as the imaginary-time Schrödinger equation, to obtain an asymptotic formula for the probability that the system reaches the ground state in the limit of a long annealing time in simulated ann…
We determine conditions under which a generic gauge invariant nonautonomous and inhomogeneous nonlinear partial differential equation in the two-dimensional space-time continuum can be transform into standard autonomous forms. In addition to the nonlinear Schroedinger equation, important examples include the derivative nonlinear Schroedinger equation, the quintic complex Ginzburg-Landau equation, and the Gerdjikov-Ivanov equation. This approach provides a mathematical description of nonstationary media supporting unidimensional signal propagation and/or total field trapping. In particular, we …
We study stochastic evolution equations describing the dynamics of open quantum systems. First, using resolvent approximations, we obtain a sufficient condition for regularity of solutions to linear stochastic Schroedinger equations driven by cylindrical Brownian motions applying to many physical systems. Then, we establish well-posedness and norm conservation property of a wide class of open quantum systems described in position representation. Moreover, we prove Ehrenfest-type theorems that describe the evolution of the mean value of quantum observables in open systems. Finally, we give a ne…
Within the framework of self-adjoint operator of time in non-relativistic quantum mechanics some properties of solutions of Schroedinger equation, related to Hilbert space formalism, are investigated for two types of time dependent Hamiltonian.
We consider a wide class of nonlinear canonical quantum systems described by a one-particle Schroedinger equation containing a complex nonlinearity. We introduce a nonlinear unitary transformation which permits us to linearize the continuity equation. In this way we are able to obtain a new quantum system obeying to a nonlinear Schroedinger equation with a real nonlinearity. As an application of this theory we consider a few already studied Schroedinger equations as that containing the nonlinearity introduced by the exclusion-inclusion principle, the Doebner-Goldin equation and others. PACS nu…
Starting from the forward and backward infinitesimal generators of bilateral, time-homogeneous Markov processes, the self-adjoint Hamiltonians of the generalized Schroedinger equations are first introduced by means of suitable Doob transformations. Then, by broadening with the aid of the Dirichlet forms the results of the Nelson stochastic mechanics, we prove that it is possible to associate bilateral, and time-homogeneous Markov processes to the wave functions stationary solutions of our generalized Schroedinger equations. Particular attention is then paid to the special case of the Levy-Schr…
We investigate wavepacket solutions for time-dependent Schoedinger equation in the presence of an exponentially decaying potential. Assuming for travelling wave solutions the phase to be a linear combination of the space and time coordinates, we obtain two distinct wavepacket solutions for the Schroedinger equation. The wavepackets counterpropagate in space at a constant velocity without any distortion or spreading thus retain their initial form at arbitrarily large distances.
A new convenient method to diagonalize the non-relativistic many-body Schroedinger equation with two-body central potentials is derived. It combines kinematic rotations (democracy transformations) and exact calculation of overlap integrals between bases with different sets of mass-scaled Jacobi coordinates, thereby allowing for a great simplification of this formidable problem. We validate our method by obtaining a perfect correspondence with the exactly solvable three-body ($N=3$) Calogero model in 1D.
This is a historical note. In 1981 we constructed a discrete version of quantum nonlinear Schroedinger equation. This led to our discovery of quantum determinant: it appeared in construction of anti-pod (11). Later these became important in quantum groups: it describes the center of Yang-Baxter algebra. Our paper was published in Doklady Akademii Nauk vol 259, page 76 (July l981) in Russian language.
We report localized nonlinear modes of the self-focusing and defocusing nonlocal nonlinear Schroedinger equation with the generalized PT-symmetric Scarf-II, Rosen-Morse, and periodic potentials. Parameter regions are presented for broken and unbroken PT-symmetric phases of linear bounded states and the linear stability of the obtained solitons. Moreover, we numerically explore the dynamical behaviors of solitons and find stable solitons for some given parameters.
