We review recent results obtained within the framework of the integer quantum Hall effect in the spirit of the work of Germinet, Klein, Schenker in \cite{GKS}. Landau Hamiltonians perturbed by random electric or magnetic perturbations are shown to exhibit a dynamical mobility edge, that is a transition between a regime of dynamical localization and a regime of non trivial transport at a minimal rate. The focus is put on three situations of interest: 1) unbounded ergodic electric potentials, for which Landau gaps are filled; 2) non ergodic electric potentials; 3) random magnetic potentials.
Propagators weakly associated to a family of Hamiltonians and the adiabatic theorem for the Landau Hamiltonian with a time-dependent Aharonov-Bohm flux
We consider the asymptotic behavior of the spectrum of the Landau Hamiltonian plus a rapidly decaying potential, as the magnetic field strength, $B$, tends to infinity. After a suitable rescaling, this becomes a semiclassical problem where the role of Planck's constant is played by $1/B$. The spectrum of the operator forms eigenvalue clusters. We obtain a Szegő limit theorem for the eigenvalues in the clusters as a suitable cluster index and $B$ tend to infinity with a fixed ratio $\calE$. The answer involves the averages of the potential over circles of radius $\sqrt{\calE/2}$ (circular Radon…
We consider a driven open system whose evolution is described by a Lindbladian. The Lindbladian is assumed to be dephasing and its Hamiltonian part to be given by the Landau-Zener Hamiltonian. We derive a formula for the transition probability which, unlike previous results, extends the Landau-Zener formula to open systems.
We establish a sharp estimate on the size of the spectral clusters of the Landau Hamiltonian with $L^p$ potentials in two dimensions as the cluster index tends to infinity. In three dimensions, we prove a new limiting absorption principle as well as a unique continuation theorem. The results generalize to higher dimensions.
We consider Landau Hamiltonians with a weak coupling random electric potential of breather type. Under appropriate assumptions we prove a Wegner estimate. It implies the Hoelder continuity of the integrated density of states. The main challenge is the problem how to deal with non-linear dependence on the random parameters.
In this work, the definition of the density operator on quantum states in Hilbert spaces and some of its aspects relevant in thermodynamics and information-theoretical entropy calculations are given. In this framework, a physical model describing an electron in a magnetic field is investigated. The so-called exotic Landau problem in noncommutative plane is also considered. Then, a model related to the fractional quantum Hall effect is revisited. Thanks to the completeness relations verified by the coherent states (CS) in these models, the thermodynamics is discussed by using the diagonal $P$-r…
This note is devoted to the study of the well-posedness of the Cauchy problem for the Landau Hamiltonian wave equation in the plane, with nonzero constant magnetic field. We show the well-posedness in suitably defined Sobolev spaces taking into account the spectral properties of the operator.
We use coarse index methods to prove that the Landau Hamiltonian on the hyperbolic half-plane, and even on much more general imperfect half-spaces, has no spectral gaps. Thus the edge states of hyperbolic quantum Hall Hamiltonians completely fill up the gaps between Landau levels, just like those of the Euclidean counterpart.
It is well known that, given a $2d$ purely magnetic Landau Hamiltonian with a constant magnetic field $b$ which generates a magnetic flux $φ$ per unit area, then any spectral island $σ_b$ consisting of $M$ infinitely degenerate Landau levels carries an integrated density of states $\mathcal{I}_b=M φ$. Wannier later discovered a similar Diophantine relation expressing the integrated density of states of a gapped group of bands of the Hofstadter Hamiltonian as a linear function of the magnetic field flux with integer slope. We extend this result to a gap labelling theorem for any $2d$ Bloch-Land…
This work provides a first step towards the construction of a noncommutative geometry for the quantum Hall effect in the continuum. Taking inspiration from the ideas developed by Bellissard during the 80's we build a spectral triple for the $C^*$-algebra of continuous magnetic operators based on a Dirac operator with compact resolvent. The metric aspects of this spectral triple are studied, and an important piece of Bellissard's theory (the so-called first Connes' formula) is proved.
In this paper we prove the Hardy inequalities for the quadratic form of the Laplacian with the Landau Hamiltonian magnetic field. Moreover, we obtain Poincaré type inequality and inequalities with more general families of weights, all with estimates for the remainder terms of these inequalities. Furthermore, we establish weighted Hardy inequalities for the quadratic form of the magnetic Baouendi-Grushin operator for the magnetic field of Aharonov-Bohm type. For these, we show refinements of the known Hardy inequalities for the Baouendi-Grushin operator involving radial derivatives in some of t…
We discuss a class of models that generalize the two-state Landau-Zener (LZ) Hamiltonian to both the multistate and multitime evolution. It is already known that the corresponding quantum mechanical evolution can be understood in great detail. Here, we present an approach to classify such solvable models, namely, to identify all their independent families for a given number $N$ of interacting states and prove the absence of such families for some types of interactions. We also discuss how, within a solvable family, one can classify the scattering matrices, i.e., the system's dynamics. Due to t…
The spectral properties of the singularly perturbed self-adjoint Landau Hamiltonian $A_α=(i \nabla + A)^2 + αδ$ in $L^2(R^2)$ with a $δ$-potential supported on a finite $C^{1,1}$-smooth curve $Σ$ are studied. Here $A = \frac{1}{2} B (-x_2, x_1)^\top$ is the vector potential, $B>0$ is the strength of the homogeneous magnetic field, and $α\in L^\infty(Σ)$ is a position-dependent real coefficient modeling the strength of the singular interaction on the curve $Σ$. After a general discussion of the qualitative spectral properties of $A_α$ and its resolvent, one of the main objectives in the present…
We solve the non-stationary Schrodinger equation for several time-dependent Hamiltonians, such as the BCS Hamiltonian with an interaction strength inversely proportional to time, periodically driven BCS and linearly driven inhomogeneous Dicke models as well as various multi-level Landau-Zener tunneling models. The latter are Demkov-Osherov, bow-tie, and generalized bow-tie models. We show that these Landau-Zener problems and their certain interacting many-body generalizations map to Gaudin magnets in a magnetic field. Moreover, we demonstrate that the time-dependent Schrodinger equation for th…
The kinetic energy term of Hamiltonian systems with balanced loss and gain is not semi-positive-definite, leading to instabilities at the classical as well quantum level. It is shown that an additional Lorentz interaction in the Hamiltonian allows the kinetic energy term to be semi-positive-definite and thereby, improving the stability properties of the system. Further, a consistent quantum theory admitting bound states may be obtained on the real line instead of Stoke wedges on the complex plane. The Landau Hamiltonian in presence of balanced loss and gain is considered for elucidating the ge…
The purpose of this paper is threefold: First of all the topological aspects of the Landau Hamiltonian are reviewed in the light (and with the jargon) of theory of topological insulators. In particular it is shown that the Landau Hamiltonian has a generalized even time-reversal symmetry (TRS). Secondly, a new tool for the computation of the topological numbers associated with each Landau level is introduced. The latter is obtained by combining the Dixmier trace and the (resolvent of the) harmonic oscillator. Finally, these results are extended to models with non-Abelian magnetic fields. Two mo…
We consider the Landau Hamiltonian $H_0$, self-adjoint in $L^2({\mathbb R^2})$, whose spectrum consists of an arithmetic progression of infinitely degenerate positive eigenvalues $Λ_q$, $q \in {\mathbb Z}_+$. We perturb $H_0$ by a non-local potential written as a bounded pseudo-differential operator ${\rm Op}^{\rm w}({\mathcal V})$ with real-valued Weyl symbol ${\mathcal V}$, such that ${\rm Op}^{\rm w}({\mathcal V}) H_0^{-1}$ is compact. We study the spectral properties of the perturbed operator $H_{\mathcal V} = H_0 + {\rm Op}^{\rm w}({\mathcal V})$. First, we construct symbols ${\mathcal V}…

In this work we study the differential aspects of the noncommutative geometry for the magnetic $C^*$-algebra which is a 2-cocycle deformation of the group $C^*$-algebra of $\mathbb{R}^2$. This algebra is intimately related to the study of the Quantum Hall Effect in the continuous, and our results aim to provide a new geometric interpretation of the related Kubo's formula. Taking inspiration from the ideas developed by Bellissard during the 80's, we build an appropriate Fredholm module for the magnetic $C^*$-algebra based on the magnetic Dirac operator which is the square root (à la Dirac) of t…
We discuss solvable multistate Landau-Zener (MLZ) models whose Hamiltonians have commuting partner operators with $\sim 1/τ$-time-dependent parameters. Many already known solvable MLZ models belong precisely to this class. We derive the integrability conditions on the parameters of such commuting operators, and demonstrate how to use such conditions in order to derive new solvable cases. We show that MLZ models from this class must contain bands of parallel diabatic energy levels. The structure of the scattering matrix and other properties are found to be the same as in the previously discusse…
Exactly solvable multistate Landau-Zener (MLZ) models are associated with families of operators that commute with the MLZ Hamiltonians and depend on time linearly. There can also be operators that satisfy the integrability conditions with the MLZ Hamiltonians but depend on time quadratically. We show that, among the MLZ systems, such time-quadratic operators are much more common. We demonstrate then that such operators generally lead to constraints on the independent variables that parametrize the scattering matrix. We show how such constraints lead to asymptotically exact expressions for the …
Eigenstates of the planar magnetic Laplacian with homogeneous magnetic field form degenerate energy bands, the Landau levels. We discuss the unitary correspondence between states in higher Landau levels and those in the lowest Landau level, where wave functions are holomorphic. We apply this correspondence to many-body systems, in particular we represent effective Hamiltonians and particle densities in higher Landau levels by corresponding quantities in the lowest Landau level.
