We consider the Landau Hamiltonian perturbed by a long-range electric potential $V$. The spectrum of the perturbed operator consists of eigenvalue clusters which accumulate to the Landau levels. First, we obtain an estimate of the rate of the shrinking of these clusters to the Landau levels as the number of the cluster $q$ tends to infinity. Further, we assume that there exists an appropriate $\V$, homogeneous of order $-ρ$ with $ρ\in (0,1)$, such that $V(x) = \V(x) + O(|x|^{-ρ- ε})$, $ε> 0$, as $|x| \to \infty$, and investigate the asymptotic distribution of the eigenvalues within a given cluster, as $q \to \infty$. We obtain an explicit description of the asymptotic density of the eigenvalues in terms of the mean-value transform of $\V$.
We consider metric perturbations of the Landau Hamiltonian. We investigate the asymptotic behaviour of the discrete spectrum of the perturbed operator near the Landau levels, for perturbations with power-like decay, exponential decay or compact support.
We establish a sharp estimate on the size of the spectral clusters of the Landau Hamiltonian with $L^p$ potentials in two dimensions as the cluster index tends to infinity. In three dimensions, we prove a new limiting absorption principle as well as a unique continuation theorem. The results generalize to higher dimensions.
The Landau Hamiltonian, describing the behavior of a quantum particle in dimension 2 in a constant magnetic field, is perturbed by a magnetic field with power-like decay at infinity and a similar electric potential. We describe how the spectral subspaces change and how the Landau levels split under this perturbation.
We study the spectral flow of Landau-Robin hamiltonians in the exterior of a compact domain with smooth boundary. This provides a method to study the spectrum of the exterior Landau-Robin hamiltonian's dependence on the choice of Robin data, even explaining the heuristics of how the spectrum of the Robin problem asymptotically tends to the spectrum of the Dirichlet problem. The main technical result concerns the continuous dependence of Landau-Robin hamiltonians on the Robin data in the gap topology. The problem can be localized to the compact boundary where the asymptotic behavior of the spec…
In this paper we prove the Hardy inequalities for the quadratic form of the Laplacian with the Landau Hamiltonian magnetic field. Moreover, we obtain Poincaré type inequality and inequalities with more general families of weights, all with estimates for the remainder terms of these inequalities. Furthermore, we establish weighted Hardy inequalities for the quadratic form of the magnetic Baouendi-Grushin operator for the magnetic field of Aharonov-Bohm type. For these, we show refinements of the known Hardy inequalities for the Baouendi-Grushin operator involving radial derivatives in some of t…
The spectral properties of the singularly perturbed self-adjoint Landau Hamiltonian $A_α=(i \nabla + A)^2 + αδ$ in $L^2(R^2)$ with a $δ$-potential supported on a finite $C^{1,1}$-smooth curve $Σ$ are studied. Here $A = \frac{1}{2} B (-x_2, x_1)^\top$ is the vector potential, $B>0$ is the strength of the homogeneous magnetic field, and $α\in L^\infty(Σ)$ is a position-dependent real coefficient modeling the strength of the singular interaction on the curve $Σ$. After a general discussion of the qualitative spectral properties of $A_α$ and its resolvent, one of the main objectives in the present…
We consider the Landau Hamiltonian $H_0$, self-adjoint in $L^2({\mathbb R^2})$, whose spectrum consists of an arithmetic progression of infinitely degenerate positive eigenvalues $Λ_q$, $q \in {\mathbb Z}_+$. We perturb $H_0$ by a non-local potential written as a bounded pseudo-differential operator ${\rm Op}^{\rm w}({\mathcal V})$ with real-valued Weyl symbol ${\mathcal V}$, such that ${\rm Op}^{\rm w}({\mathcal V}) H_0^{-1}$ is compact. We study the spectral properties of the perturbed operator $H_{\mathcal V} = H_0 + {\rm Op}^{\rm w}({\mathcal V})$. First, we construct symbols ${\mathcal V}…
In this note, we study Lifshitz tails for a 2D Landau Hamiltonian perturbed by a random alloy-type potential constructed with single site potentials decaying at least at a Gaussian speed. We prove that, if the Landau level stays preserved as a band edge for the perturbed Hamiltonian, at the Landau levels, the integrated density of states has a Lifshitz behavior of the type $e^{-\log^2|E-2bq|}$.
We consider the Landau Hamiltonian (i.e. the 2D Schroedinger operator with constant magnetic field) perturbed by an electric potential V which decays sufficiently fast at infinity. The spectrum of the perturbed Hamiltonian consists of clusters of eigenvalues which accumulate to the Landau levels. Applying a suitable version of the anti-Wick quantization, we investigate the asymptotic distribution of the eigenvalues within a given cluster as the number of the cluster tends to infinity. We obtain an explicit description of the asymptotic density of the eigenvalues in terms of the Radon transform…
We study leading order singularities of the wave trace of the Aharonov--Bohm Hamiltonian on $\mathbf{R}^2$ with multiple solenoids under a generic assumption that no three solenoids are collinear. Then we apply our formula to get a lower bound of scattering resonances in a logarithmic neighborhood near the real axis.
In this paper we study the Cauchy problem for the Landau Hamiltonian wave equation, with time dependent irregular (distributional) electromagnetic field and similarly irregular velocity. For such equations, we describe the notion of a `very weak solution' adapted to the type of solutions that exist for regular coefficients. The construction is based on considering Friedrichs-type mollifier of the coefficients and corresponding classical solutions, and their quantitative behaviour in the regularising parameter. We show that even for distributional coefficients, the Cauchy problem does have a ve…
In this note we consider a Landau Hamiltonian perturbed by a random magnetic potential of Anderson type. For a given number of bands, we prove the existence of both strongly localized states at the edges of the spectrum and dynamical delocalization near the center of the bands in the sense that wave packets travel at least at a given minimum speed. We provide explicit examples of magnetic perturbations that split the Landau levels into full intervals of spectrum.
We study a magnetic Schr{ö}dinger Hamiltonian, with axisymmetric potential in any dimension. The associated magnetic field is unitary and non constant. The problem reduces to a 1D family of singular Sturm-Liouville operators on the half-line indexed by a quantum number. We study the associated band functions. They have finite limits that are the Landau levels. These limits play the role of thresholds in the spectrum of the Hamiltonian. We provide an asymptotic expansion of the band functions at infinity. Each Landau level concerns an infinity of band functions and each energy level is intersec…
We use the theory of Berezin-Toeplitz operators of Ma and Marinescu to study the quantum Hamiltonian dynamics associated with classical Hamiltonian flows over closed prequantized symplectic manifolds in the context of geometric quantization of Kostant and Souriau. We express the associated evolution operators via parallel transport in the quantum spaces over the induced path of almost complex structures, and we establish various semi-classical estimates. In particular, we establish a Gutzwiller trace formula for the Kostant-Souriau operator and compute explicitly the leading term. We then desc…
Let $(M,J,ω)$ be a quantizable compact Kähler manifold, with quantizing Hermitian line bundle $(A,h)$, and associated Hardy space $H(X)$, where $X$ is the unit circle bundle. Given a collection of $r$ Poisson commuting quantizable Hamiltonian functions $f_j$ on $M$, there is an induced Abelian unitary action on $H(X)$, generated by certain Töplitz operators naturally induced by the $f_j$'s. As a multi-dimensional analogue of the usual Weyl law and trace formula, we consider the problem of describing the asymptotic clustering of the joint eigenvalues of these Töplitz operators along a given ray…
In this survey article we consider the operator pair $(H,H_0)$ where $H_0$ is the shifted 3D Schrödinger operator with constant magnetic field, $H : = H_0 + V$, and $V$ is a short-range electric potential of a fixed sign. We describe the asymptotic behavior of the Krein spectral shift function (SSF) $ξ(E; H,H_0)$ as the energy $E$ approaches the Landau levels $2bq$, $q \in {\mathbb Z}_+$, which play the role of thresholds in the spectrum of $H_0$. The main asymptotic term of $ξ(E; H,H_0)$ as $E \to 2bq$ with a fixed $q \in {\mathbb Z}_+$ is written in the terms of appropriate compact Berezin-T…
On a flat surface, the Landau operator, or quantum Hall Hamiltonian, has spectrum a discrete set of infinitely degenerate Landau levels. We consider surfaces with asymptotically constant curvature away from a possibly non-compact submanifold, the helicoid being our main example. The Landau levels remain isolated, provided the spectrum is considered in an appropriate Hilbert module over the Roe algebra of the surface delocalized away from the submanifold. Delocalized coarse indices may then be assigned to them. As an application, we prove that Landau operators on helical surfaces have no spectr…
