The renormalization group flows of the one-dimensional anisotropic XY model and quantum Ising model under a transverse field are obtained by different multiscale entanglement renormalization ansatz schemes. It is shown that the optimized disentangler removes the short-range entanglement by rotating the system in the parameter space spanned by the anisotropy and the magnetic field. It is understood from the study that the disentangler reduces the entanglement by mapping the system to another one in the same universality class but with smaller short range entanglement. The phase boundary and corresponding critical exponents are calculated using different schemes with different block sizes, look-ahead steps and truncation dimensions. It is shown that larger truncation dimension leads to more accurate results and that using larger block size or look-ahead step improve the overall calculation consistency.
I apply a two-step density-matrix renormalization group method to the anisotropic two-dimensional tight-binding model. This study, which is a prelude to the study of models of quasi-one dimensional materials, shows the potential power of this approach for anisotropic fermionic models. I find a ground-state energy which agrees with the exact value up to four digits for systems as large as $24 \times 25$. This open new opportunities for simulations of fermions in two dimensions.
We present an elementary introduction to entanglement renormalization, a real space renormalization group for quantum lattice systems. This manuscript corresponds to a chapter of the book "Understanding Quantum Phase Transitions", edited by Lincoln D. Carr (Taylor & Francis, Boca Raton, 2010)
The tensor-entanglement renormalization group approach is applied to Hamiltonians that realize a class of topologically ordered states -- string-net condensed states. We analyze phase transitions between phases with and without string-net condensation. These phase transitions change topological order without changing any symmetries. This demonstrates that the tensor-entanglement renormalization group approach can be used to study the phase diagram of a quantum system with topologically ordered phases.
We propose and test an algorithm to simulate a lattice system of interacting fermions in two spatial dimensions. The approach is an extension of the entanglement renormalization technique [Phys. Rev. Lett. 99, 220405 (2007)] and the related multi-scale entanglement renormalization ansatz. Benchmark calculations for free and interacting fermions on a lattice of $6\times 6$ sites and periodic boundary conditions confirm the validity of this proposal.
Two-loop renormalization-group analysis for a two-dimensional electron system with a partially flat Fermi surface has been carried out. We found that, {\it irrespective of pairing mechanism}, the quasiparticle weight is anisotropically suppressed due to logarithmically singular processes in the flat regions of the Fermi surface. When the energy scale decreases, the quasiparticle weight is the most strongly suppressed around the center of the flat region, which qualitatively agrees with the anisotropic pseudogap behavior suggested through the angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy experiment…
We show how to build a multi-scale entanglement renormalization ansatz (MERA) representation of the ground state of a many-body Hamiltonian $H$ by applying the recently proposed \textit{tensor network renormalization} (TNR) [G. Evenbly and G. Vidal, arXiv:1412.0732] to the Euclidean time evolution operator $e^{-βH}$ for infinite $β$. This approach bypasses the costly energy minimization of previous MERA algorithms and, when applied to finite inverse temperature $β$, produces a MERA representation of a thermal Gibbs state. Our construction endows TNR with a renormalization group flow in the spa…
The use of entanglement renormalization in the presence of scale invariance is investigated. We explain how to compute an accurate approximation of the critical ground state of a lattice model, and how to evaluate local observables, correlators and critical exponents. Our results unveil a precise connection between the multi-scale entanglement renormalization ansatz (MERA) and conformal field theory (CFT). Given a critical Hamiltonian on the lattice, this connection can be exploited to extract most of the conformal data of the CFT that describes the model in the continuum limit.
In a recent contribution [arXiv:0904:4151] entanglement renormalization was generalized to fermionic lattice systems in two spatial dimensions. Entanglement renormalization is a real-space coarse-graining transformation for lattice systems that produces a variational ansatz, the multi-scale entanglement renormalization ansatz (MERA), for the ground states of local Hamiltonians. In this paper we describe in detail the fermionic version of the MERA formalism and algorithm. Starting from the bosonic MERA, which can be regarded both as a quantum circuit or in relation to a coarse-graining transfor…
Symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases are short-range entangled quantum phases with symmetry, which have gapped excitations in the bulk and gapless modes at the edge. In this paper, we study the SPT phases in the spin-1 Heisenberg chain with a single-ion anisotropy D, which has a quantum phase transition between a Haldane phase and a large-D phase. Using symmetric multiscale entanglement renormalization ansatz (MERA) tensor networks, we study the nonlocal order parameters for time-reversal and inversion symmetry. For the inversion symmetric MERA, we propose a brick-and-rope representatio…
By using a different quantum-to-classical mapping from the Trotter-Suzuki decomposition, we identify the entanglement structure of the maximal eigenvectors for the associated quantum transfer matrix. This observation provides a deeper insight into the problem of linear growth of the entanglement entropy in time evolution using conventional methods. Based on this observation, we propose a general method for arbitrary temperatures using the biorthonormal transfer-matrix renormalization group. Our method exhibits a competitive accuracy with a much cheaper computational cost in comparison with two…
We investigate the ground state persistent spin current and the pair entanglement in one-dimensional antiferromagnetic anisotropic Heisenberg ring with twisted boundary conditions. Solving Bethe ansatz equations numerically, we calculate the dependence of the ground state energy on the total magnetic flux through the ring, and the resulting persistent current. Motivated by recent development of quantum entanglement theory, we study the properties of the ground state concurrence under the influence of the flux through the anisotropic Heisenberg ring. We also include an external magnetic field a…
Based on exact diagonalization and density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method, we show that an anisotropic triangle lattice Heisenberg spin model has three distinct quantum phases. In particular, a spin-liquid phase is present in the weak interchain coupling regime, which is characterized by an exponentially-decaying spin correlator along the weaker coupling direction and a quasi-one-dimensional spin structure factor along the chain direction, in agreement with experiments on the Cs2CuCl4 compounds. In the obtained phase diagram, the spin liquid phase is found to persist up to a relati…
We extend the formalism of entanglement renormalization to the study of boundary critical phenomena. The multi-scale entanglement renormalization ansatz (MERA), in its scale invariant version, offers a very compact approximation to quantum critical ground states. Here we show that, by adding a boundary to the scale invariant MERA, an accurate approximation to the critical ground state of an infinite chain with a boundary is obtained, from which one can extract boundary scaling operators and their scaling dimensions. Our construction, valid for arbitrary critical systems, produces an effective …
Entanglement renormalization techniques are applied to numerically investigate the ground state of the spin-1/2 Heisenberg model on a kagome lattice. Lattices of N={36,144,inf} sites with periodic boundary conditions are considered. For the infinite lattice, the best approximation to the ground state is found to be a valence bond crystal (VBC) with a 36-site unit cell, compatible with a previous proposal. Its energy per site, E=-0.43221, is an exact upper bound and is lower than the energy of any previous (gapped or algebraic) spin liquid candidate for the ground state.
We use an estimator of quantum criticality based on the entanglement entropy to discuss the ground state properties of the 1D anisotropic Kondo necklace model. We found that the T=0 phase diagram of the model is described by a critical line separating an antiferromagnetic phase from a Kondo singlet state. Moreover we calculate the conformal anomaly on the critical line and obtained that c tends to 0.5 as the thermodynamic limit is reached. We conclude that these transitions belong to Ising universality class being, therefore, second order transitions instead of infinite order as claimed before…
A density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method for highly anisotropic two-dimensional systems is presented. The method consists in applying the usual DMRG in two steps. In the first step, a pure one dimensional calculation along the longitudinal direction is made in order to generate a low energy Hamiltonian. In the second step, the anisotropic 2D lattice is obtained by coupling in the transverse direction the 1D Hamiltonians. The method is applied to the anisotropic quantum spin half Heisenberg model on a square lattice.
We present a functional renormalization group scheme that allows us to calculate frustrated magnetic systems of arbitrary lattice geometry beyond O(200) sites from first principles. We study the magnetic susceptibility of the antiferromagnetic (AFM) spin-1/2 Heisenberg model ground state on the spatially anisotropic triangular lattice, where J' denotes the coupling strength of the intrachain bonds along one lattice direction and J the coupling strength of the interchain bonds. We identify three distinct phases of the Heisenberg model. Increasing xi=J'/J from the effective square lattice xi=0, …
The ground state of an S=1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on a spatially anisotropic triangular lattice, which is an effective model of Mott insulators on a triangular layer of organic charge transfer salts or Cs2CuCl4, is numerically studied. We apply a numerical variational method by using a tensor network with entanglement renormalization, which improves the capability of describing a quantum state. Magnetic ground states are identified for 0.7 <= J2/J1 <= 1 in the thermodynamic limit, where J1 and J2 denote the inner-chain and inter-chain coupling constants, respectively. Except for …
We propose and test a scheme for entanglement renormalization capable of addressing large two-dimensional quantum lattice systems. In a translationally invariant system, the cost of simulations grows only as the logarithm of the lattice size; at a quantum critical point, the simulation cost becomes independent of the lattice size and infinite systems can be analysed. We demonstrate the performance of the scheme by investigating the low energy properties of the 2D quantum Ising model on a square lattice of linear size L={6,9,18,54,inf} with periodic boundary conditions. We compute the ground st…
We establish a precise connection between discrete wavelet transforms (WTs) and entanglement renormalization (ER), a real-space renormalization group transformation for quantum systems on the lattice, in the context of free particle systems. Specifically, we employ Daubechies wavelets to build approximations to the ground state of the critical Ising model, then demonstrate that these states correspond to instances of the multi-scale entanglement renormalization ansatz (MERA), producing the first known analytic MERA for critical systems.
We study the ground state quantum phase transition by means of entanglement in the one-dimensional asymmetric Hubbard model with open boundary condition. The local entanglement between the middle two sites and the rest of the system, and the block entanglement between the left and right portions of the system, are calculated using the density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method. We find that the entanglement shows interesting scaling and singular behavior around the phase transition line.
The correlations, entanglement entropy, and fidelity susceptibility are calculated for a one-dimensional spin-1/2 XXZ chain with anisotropic power-law long range interactions by employing the density matrix renormalization group method. In particular, this long-range interaction is assigned to ferromagnetic for transversal components, while it can be either ferro- or antiferromagnetic for the longitudinal spin component. Two ground-state phase diagrams are established versus the anisotropy of the interactions which not only changes the phase boundaries of the counterparts with short-range inte…
We investigate the entanglement-renormalization group flows of translation-invariant topological stabilizer models in three dimensions. Fracton models are observed to bifurcate under entanglement renormalization, generically returning at least one copy of the original model. Based on this behavior we formulate the notion of bifurcated equivalence for fracton phases, generalizing foliated fracton equivalence. The notion of quotient superselection sectors is also generalized accordingly. We calculate bifurcating entanglement-renormalization group flows for a wide range of examples and, based on …
We study the renormalization group flow of the Lagrangian for statistical and quantum systems by representing their path integral in terms of a tensor network. Using a tensor-entanglement-filtering renormalization (TEFR) approach that removes local entanglement and coarse grain the lattice, we show that the resulting renormalization flow of the tensors in the tensor network has a nice fixed-point structure. The isolated fixed-point tensors $T_{inv}$ plus the symmetry group $G_{sym}$ of the tensors (i.e. the symmetry group of the Lagrangian) characterize various phases of the system. Such a cha…
We study numerically the universal conductance of Luttinger liquids wire with a single impurity via the Muti-scale Entanglement Renormalization Ansatz (MERA). The scale invariant MERA provides an efficient way to extract scaling operators and scaling dimensions for both the bulk and the boundary conformal field theories. By utilizing the key relationship between the conductance tensor and ground-state correlation function, the universal conductance can be evaluated within the framework of the boundary MERA. We construct the boundary MERA to compute the correlation functions and scaling dimensi…
We compare the roles of fidelity and entanglement in characterizing renormalization group flows and quantum phase transitions. It turns out that the scaling parameter extracted from fidelity for different ground states succeeds to capture nontrivial information including stable and unstable fixed points, whereas the von Neumann entropy as a bipartite entanglement measure (or equivalently, majorization relations satisfied by the spectra of the reduced density matrix along renormalization group flows) often fails, as far as the intrinsic irreversibility-information loss along renormalization gro…
Entanglement renormalization refers to a sequence of real-space coarse-graining transformations in which short-range entanglement on successively longer length scales are distilled out. In this work, we introduce a state-based approach, "zipper entanglement renormalization" (ZER), for free-fermion systems. The name derives from a unitary we construct at every renormalization step, dubbed the zipper, which unzips the state into an approximate tensor product between a short-range entangled state and a renormalized one carrying the longer-range entanglement. By successively performing ZER on the …
We investigate the scaling of entanglement entropy in both the multi-scale entanglement renormalization ansatz (MERA) and in its generalization, the branching MERA. We provide analytical upper bounds for this scaling, which take the general form of a boundary law with various types of multiplicative corrections, including power-law corrections all the way to a bulk law. For several cases of interest, we also provide numerical results that indicate that these upper bounds are saturated to leading order. In particular we establish that, by a suitable choice of holographic tree, the branching MER…
We apply a recently developed functional renormalization group (fRG) scheme for quantum spin systems to the spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic XXZ model on a two-dimensional square lattice. Based on an auxiliary fermion representation we derive flow equations which allow a resummation of the perturbation series in the spin-spin interactions. Spin susceptibilities are calculated for different values of the anisotropy parameter. The phase transition between planar and axial ordering at the isotropic point is reproduced correctly. The results for the critical scales from the fRG as quantitative measures …
We introduce a family of variational ansatz states for chains of anyons which optimally exploits the structure of the anyonic Hilbert space. This ansatz is the natural analog of the multi-scale entanglement renormalization ansatz for spin chains. In particular, it has the same interpretation as a coarse-graining procedure and is expected to accurately describe critical systems with algebraically decaying correlations. We numerically investigate the validity of this ansatz using the anyonic golden chain and its relatives as a testbed. This demonstrates the power of entanglement renormalization …
The quantum renormalization group method is applied to study the quantum criticality and entanglement entropy of the ground state of the Ising chain in the presence of antisymmetric anisotropic couplings and alternating exchange interactions. The quantum phase transitions can be characterized by the discontinuity in the second derivative of the energy of renormalized ground state. The phase diagram is obtained by the critical boundary line. The first derivative of entanglement entropy also diverges at the same critical points after enough iterations of the renormalization of coupling constants…
Entanglement renormalization is a real-space renormalization group (RG) transformation for quantum many-body systems. It generates the multi-scale entanglement renormalization ansatz (MERA), a tensor network capable of efficiently describing a large class of many-body ground states, including those of systems at a quantum critical point or with topological order. The MERA has also been proposed to be a discrete realization of the holographic principle of string theory. In this paper we propose the use of symmetric tensors as a mechanism to build a symmetry protected RG flow, and discuss two im…
The superconducting instability of the Fermi liquid state is investigated by considering anisotropic electron-boson couplings. Both electron-electron interactions and anisotropic electron-boson couplings are treated with a renormalization-group method that takes into account retardation effects. Considering a non-interacting circular Fermi surface, we find analytical solutions for the flow equations and derive a set of generalized Eliashberg equations. Electron-boson couplings with different momentum dependences are studied, and we find superconducting instabilities of the metallic state with …
The multi-scale entanglement renormalisation ansatz (MERA) is argued to provide a natural description for topological states of matter. The case of Kitaev's toric code is analyzed in detail and shown to possess a remarkably simple MERA description leading to distillation of the topological degrees of freedom at the top of the tensor network. Kitaev states on an infinite lattice are also shown to be a fixed point of the RG flow associated with entanglement renormalization. All these results generalize to arbitrary quantum double models.
We revisit the applications of integral geometry in AdS$_3$ and argue that the metric of the kinematic space can be realized as the entanglement contour, which is defined as the additive entanglement density. From the renormalization of the entanglement contour, we can holographically understand the operations of disentangler and isometry in multi-scale entanglement renormalization ansatz. Furthermore, a renormalization group equation of the long-distance entanglement contour is then derived. We then generalize this integral geometric construction to higher dimensions and in particular demonst…
The real-space RG approach is applied to study critical temperatures of system consisting of interacting spin chains of spin S=1 with an inner antiferromagnetic exchange which form a honeycomb crystal lattice. Using anisotropic Heisenberg model we calculate critical temperature as a function of anisotropic parameter and the ratio of interchain and intrachain interactions. A comparison our results with those obtained from RGRS calculations for the same model of spin-1/2 on a square lattice is given.
We construct an explicit renormalization group (RG) transformation for Levin and Wen's string-net models on a hexagonal lattice. The transformation leaves invariant the ground-state "fixed-point" wave function of the string-net condensed phase. Our construction also produces an exact representation of the wave function in terms of the multi-scale entanglement renormalization ansatz (MERA). This sets the stage for efficient numerical simulations of string-net models using MERA algorithms. It also provides an explicit quantum circuit to prepare the string-net ground-state wave function using a q…
We study the phase diagram of a frustrated spin-1/2 ferromagnetic chain with anisotropic exchange interactions in an external magnetic field, using the density matrix renormalization group method. We show that an easy-axis anisotropy enhances the tendency towards multimagnon bound states, while an easy-plane anisotropy favors chirally ordered phases. In particular, a moderate easy-plane anisotropy gives rise to a quantum phase transition at intermediate magnetization. We argue that this transition is related to the finite-field phase transition experimentally observed in the spin-1/2 compound …
We derive the multiscale entanglement renormalization ansatz (MERA) for the single impuity Kondo model. We find two types of hidden quantum entanglement: one comes from a finite-temperature effect on the geometry of the MERA network, and the other represents screening of the impurity by conduction electrons. As the latter starts to dominate the electronic state, the Kondo physics emerges. The present result is a simple and beautiful example of a holographic dual of a boundary conformal field theory.
We propose a tensor network method for investigating strongly disordered systems that is based on an adaptation of entanglement renormalization [G. Vidal, Phys. Rev. Lett. 99, 220405 (2007)]. This method makes use of the strong disorder renormalization group to determine the order in which lattice sites are coarse-grained, which sets the overall structure of the corresponding tensor network ansatz, before optimization using variational energy minimization. Benchmark results from the disordered XXZ model demonstrates that this approach accurately captures ground state entanglement in disordered…
We report an angular resolved photoemission study of Na0.73CoO2 where it is found that the renormalization of the quasiparticle (QP) dispersion changes dramatically upon a rotation from GM to GK. The comparison of the experimental data to the calculated band structure reveals that the QP-renormalization is most pronounced along the GK-direction, while it is significantly weaker along the GM-direction. We discuss the observed anisotropy in terms of multiorbital effects and point out the relevance of magnetic correlations for the band structure of Na0.73CoO2.
We propose a new tensor renormalization group algorithm, Anisotropic Tensor Renormalization Group (ATRG), for lattice models in arbitrary dimensions. The proposed method shares the same versatility with the Higher-Order Tensor Renormalization Group (HOTRG) algorithm, i.e., it preserves the lattice topology after the renormalization. In comparison with HOTRG, both of the computation cost and the memory footprint of our method are drastically reduced, especially in higher dimensions, by renormalizing tensors in an anisotropic way after the singular value decomposition. We demonstrate the ability…
We introduce the subsystem symmetry-preserving real-space entanglement renormalization group and apply it to study bifurcating flows generated by linear and fractal subsystem symmetry-protected topological phases in two spatial dimensions. We classify all bifurcating fixed points that are given by subsystem symmetric cluster states with two qubits per unit cell. In particular, we find that the square lattice cluster state is a quotient-bifurcating fixed point, while the cluster states derived from Yoshida's first order fractal spin liquid models are self-bifurcating fixed points. We discuss th…
The entanglement renormalization flow of a (1+1) free boson is formulated as a path integral over some auxiliary scalar fields. The resulting effective theory for these fields amounts to the dilaton term of non-critical string theory in two spacetime dimensions. A connection between the scalar fields in the two theories is provided, allowing to acquire novel insights into how a theory of gravity emerges from the entanglement structure of another one without gravity.
The multiscale entanglement renormalization ansatz (MERA) provides a constructive algorithm for realizing wavefunctions that are inherently scale invariant. Unlike conformally invariant partition functions however, the finite bond dimension $χ$ of the MERA provides a cut-off in the fields that can be realized. In this letter, we demonstrate that this cut-off is equivalent to the one obtained when approximating a thermal state of a critical Hamiltonian with a matrix product operator (MPO) of finite bond dimension $χ$. This is achieved by constructing an explicit mapping between the isometries o…
By combining the Grassmann algebra with multi-scale entanglement renormalization ansatz (MERA), we introduce a new unbiased and effective numerical method for simulating 2D strongly correlated electronic systems. The new GMERA method inherits all the advantages of MERA, which constructs the variational wave function based on complicated tensor network. Besides it can deal with fermionic properties of the system due to Grassmann algebra through local tensor contractions. This general method can treat different tensor network structures in a universal way. We show several benchmark calculations …
We investigate the entanglement structure of the continuous multi-scale entanglement renormalization ansatz (cMERA) [Haegeman et al., Phys. Rev. Lett., 110, 100402 (2013)] for ground states of quantum field theories (QFTs). The cMERA, proposed as an extension to QFTs of the lattice MERA, is defined directly in the continuum but is nevertheless naturally equipped with a short-distance scale $1/Λ$ that acts as a UV regulator for quantum fluctuations. We consider the simplified setting of Gaussian cMERA for free QFTs, where explicit calculations can be performed. For relativistic free massless bo…
In this paper we continue the study of renormalized entanglement entropy introduced in [1]. In particular, we investigate its behavior near an IR fixed point using holographic duality. We develop techniques which, for any static holographic geometry, enable us to extract the large radius expansion of the entanglement entropy for a spherical region. We show that for both a sphere and a strip, the approach of the renormalized entanglement entropy to the IR fixed point value contains a contribution that depends on the whole RG trajectory. Such a contribution is dominant, when the leading irreleva…
In the context of real-space renormalization group methods, we propose a novel scheme for quantum systems defined on a D-dimensional lattice. It is based on a coarse-graining transformation that attempts to reduce the amount of entanglement of a block of lattice sites before truncating its Hilbert space. Numerical simulations involving the ground state of a 1D system at criticality show that the resulting coarse-grained site requires a Hilbert space dimension that does not grow with successive rescaling transformations. As a result we can address, in a quasi-exact way, tens of thousands of qua…
A quantitative criterion to prove and analyze convergence within the numerical renormalization group (NRG) is introduced. By tracing out a few further NRG shells, the resulting reduced density matrices carry relevant information on numerical accuracy as well as entanglement. Their spectra can thus be analyzed twofold. The smallest eigenvalues provide a sensitive estimate of how much weight is discarded in the low energy description of later iterations. As such, the discarded weight is a clear indicator of the accuracy of a specific NRG calculation. In particular, it indicates in a site-specifi…
We describe an iterative method to optimize the multi-scale entanglement renormalization ansatz (MERA) for the low-energy subspace of local Hamiltonians on a D-dimensional lattice. For translation invariant systems the cost of this optimization is logarithmic in the linear system size. Specialized algorithms for the treatment of infinite systems are also described. Benchmark simulation results are presented for a variety of 1D systems, namely Ising, Potts, XX and Heisenberg models. The potential to compute expected values of local observables, energy gaps and correlators is investigated.
The multi-scale entanglement renormalization ansatz (MERA) provides a natural description of the ground state of a quantum critical Hamiltonian on the lattice. From an optimized MERA, one can extract the scaling dimensions of the underlying conformal field theory. However, extracting conformal data from the ascending superoperator derived from MERA seems to have a limited range of accuracy, even after increasing the bond dimension. Here, we propose an alternative ansatz based on an increasing number of disentangling layers. This leads to generalized versions of MERA that improve the extraction…
We propose algorithms, based on the multi-scale entanglement renormalization ansatz, to obtain the ground state of quantum critical systems in the presence of boundaries, impurities, or interfaces. By exploiting the theory of minimal updates [G. Evenbly and G. Vidal, arXiv:1307.0831], the ground state is completely characterized in terms of a number of variational parameters that is independent of the system size, even though the presence of a boundary, an impurity, or an interface explicitly breaks the translation invariance of the host system. Similarly, computational costs do not scale with…
I apply a two-step density-matrix renormalization group method to the anisotropic two-dimensional Hubbard model. As a prelude to this study, I compare the numerical results to the exact one for the tight-binding model. I find a ground-state energy which agrees with the exact value up to four digits for systems as large as $24 \times 25$. I then apply the method to the interacting case. I find that for strong Hubbard interaction, the ground-state is dominated by magnetic correlations. These correlations are robust even in the presence of strong frustration. Interchain pair tunneling is negligib…
Understanding the collective behavior of a quantum many-body system, a system composed of a large number of interacting microscopic degrees of freedom, is a key aspect in many areas of contemporary physics. However, as a direct consequence of the difficultly of the so-called many-body problem, many exotic quantum phenomena involving extended systems, such as high temperature superconductivity, remain not well understood on a theoretical level. Entanglement renormalization is a recently proposed numerical method for the simulation of many-body systems which draws together ideas from the renorma…
We present a study of entanglement in the case of the 1D extended anisotropic Heisenberg model. We investigate two quantum phase transitions (QPTs) within the previously found ergodicity phase diagram [E. Plekhanov, A. Avella, and F. Mancini Phys. Rev. B \textbf{74}, 115120 (2006)]. Our calculations are done by means of the numerically exact Lanczos method at T=0, followed by a finite-size scaling. As a measure of entanglement we use the concurrence for two spins out of the system. We conclude from our studies that these QPTs are accompanied by a qualitative entanglement change.
We elaborate on our earlier proposal connecting entanglement renormalization and holographic duality in which we argued that a tensor network can be reinterpreted as a kind of skeleton for an emergent holographic space. Here we address the question of the large $N$ limit where on the holographic side the gravity theory becomes classical and a non-fluctuating smooth spacetime description emerges. We show how a number of features of holographic duality in the large $N$ limit emerge naturally from entanglement renormalization, including a classical spacetime generated by entanglement, a sparse sp…
It is shown how to construct renormalization group flows of quantum field theories in real space, as opposed to the usual Wilsonian approach in momentum space. This is achieved by generalizing the multiscale entanglement renormalization ansatz to continuum theories. The variational class of wavefunctions arising from this RG flow are translation invariant and exhibit an entropy-area law. We illustrate the construction for a free non-relativistic boson model, and argue that the full power of the construction should emerge in the case of interacting theories.
We provide an explicit connection between the differential generation of entanglement entropy in a tensor network representation of the ground states of two field theories, and a geometric description of these states based on the Fisher information metric. We show how the geometrical description remains invariant despite there is an irreducible gauge freedom in the definition of the tensor network. The results might help to understand how spacetimes may emerge from distributions of quantum states, or more concretely, from the structure of the quantum entanglement concomitant to those distribut…
