The use of entanglement renormalization in the presence of scale invariance is investigated. We explain how to compute an accurate approximation of the critical ground state of a lattice model, and how to evaluate local observables, correlators and critical exponents. Our results unveil a precise connection between the multi-scale entanglement renormalization ansatz (MERA) and conformal field theory (CFT). Given a critical Hamiltonian on the lattice, this connection can be exploited to extract most of the conformal data of the CFT that describes the model in the continuum limit.
Critical transition points between symmetry-broken phases are characterized as fixed points in the renormalization group (RG) theory. We show that, following the standard Wilsonian procedure that traces out the large momentum modes, this well known fact can break down in non-Hermitian systems. Based on non-Hermitian Su-Schrieffer-Hegger (SSH)-type models, we propose a real-space decimation scheme to study the criticality between the topological and trivial phase. We provide concrete examples and an analytic proof to show that the real-space scheme perfectly overcomes the insufficiency of the s…
Quantum impurity models are the prototypical examples of quantum many-body dynamics which manifests in their spectral and transport properties. Single channel Anderson(and Kondo model) leads to the Fermi liquid ground state in the strong coupling regime which corresponds to a stable infrared fixed point at which the quantum impurity gets completely screened by the conduction electrons. Quantum impurity models with non-trivial density of states exhibit quantum phase transition and this quantum criticality lies in the universality class of local quantum critical systems. In this paper, we report…
For D-dimensional weakly interacting topological insulators in certain symmetry classes, the topological invariant can be calculated from a D- or (D+1)-dimensional integration over a certain curvature function that is expressed in terms of single-particle Green's functions. Based on the divergence of curvature function at the topological phase transition, we demonstrate how a renormalization group approach circumvents these integrations and reduces the necessary calculation to that for the Green's function alone, rendering a numerically efficient tool to identify topological phase transitions …
Inspired by recent conflicting views on the order of the phase transition from an antiferromagnetic Neel state to a valence bond solid, we use the functional renormalization group to study the underlying quantum critical field theory which couples two complex matter fields to a non-compact gauge field. In our functional renormalization group approach we only expand in covariant derivatives of the fields and use a truncation in which the full field dependence of all wave-function renormalization functions is kept. While we do find critical exponents which agree well with some quantum Monte Carl…
The mysterious universal line revealing an independence of spin fluctuation contributions to the heat capacity of (Mn,Co)Si on impurity contents and its nature is discovered. This situation probably declares an invariance of the spin subsystem energy that may provide by the response of itinerant electron system on the volume change at doping.
Using the density-matrix renormalization group, we determine the phase diagram of the spin 1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on a honeycomb lattice with a nearest neighbor interaction J1 and a frustrating, next-neighbor exchange J2. As frustration increases, the ground state exhibits Neel, plaquette and dimer orders, with critical points at J2/J1 = 0.22 and 0.35. We observe that both the spin gap and the corresponding order parameters vanish continuously at both the critical points, indicating the presence of deconfined quantum criticality.
The goal of this manuscript is to provide an introduction to the multi-scale entanglement renormalization ansatz (MERA) and its application to the study of quantum critical systems. Only systems in one spatial dimension are considered. The MERA, in its scale-invariant form, is seen to offer direct numerical access to the scale-invariant operators of a critical theory. As a result, given a critical Hamiltonian on the lattice, the scale-invariant MERA can be used to characterize the underlying conformal field theory. The performance of the MERA is benchmarked for several critical quantum spin ch…
The pseudogap Kondo problem, describing quantum impurities coupled to fermionic quasiparticles with a pseudogap density of states, rho(omega) ~ |omega|^r, shows a rich zero-temperature phase diagram, with different screened and free moment phases and associated transitions. We analyze both the particle-hole symmetric and asymmetric cases using renormalization group techniques. In the vicinity of r=0, which plays the role of a lower-critical dimension, an expansion in the Kondo coupling is appropriate. In contrast, r=1 is the upper-critical dimension in the absence of particle-hole symmetry, an…
The gapless nodal fermions exhibit non-Fermi liquid behaviors at the nematic quantum critical point that is supposed to exist in some $d$-wave cuprate superconductors. This non-Fermi liquid state may be turned into a disorder-dominated diffusive metal if the fermions also couple to a disordered potential that generates a relevant perturbation in the sense of renormalization group theory. It is therefore necessary to examine whether a specific disorder is relevant or not. We study the interplay between critical nematic fluctuation and random chemical potential by performing renormalization grou…
The continuous quantum phase transition and the nature of quantum critical point (QCP) in a modified Kondo lattice model with Ising anisotropic exchange interactions is studied within the density-matrix renormalization group algorithm. We investigate the effect of quantum fluctuations on critical Kondo destruction QCP, by probing static and dynamic properties of the magnetic order and the Kondo effect. In particular, we identify that local Kondo physics itself becomes critical at the magnetic phase transition point, providing unbiased evidences for local quantum criticality between two insulat…
A renormalization group treatment of metamagnetic quantum criticality in metals is presented. In clean systems the universality class is found to be of the overdamped, conserving (dynamical exponent z=3) Ising type. Detailed results are obtained for the field and temperature dependence of physical quantities including the differential susceptibility, resistivity and specific heat near the transition. An application of the theory is made to Sr3Ru2O7, which appears to exhibit a metamagnetic critical end-point at a very low temperature and a field of order 5-7T.
We investigate the quantum phase transition of the O(3) nonlinear $σ$ model {\it without Berry phase} in two spacial dimensions. Utilizing the $CP^{1}$ representation of the nonlinear $σ$ model, we obtain an effective action in terms of bosonic spinons interacting via compact U(1) gauge fields. Based on the effective field theory, we find that the bosonic spinons are deconfined to emerge at the quantum critical point of the nonlinear $σ$ model. It is emphasized that the deconfinement of spinons is realized {\it in the absence of Berry phase}. This is in contrast to the previous study of Senthi…
We numerically investigate the critical behavior of the Hubbard model on the honeycomb and the $π$-flux lattice, which exhibits a direct transition from a Dirac semimetal to an antiferromagnetically ordered Mott insulator. We use projective auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo simulations and a careful finite-size scaling analysis that exploits approximately improved renormalization-group-invariant observables. This approach, which is successfully verified for the three-dimensional XY transition of the Kane-Mele-Hubbard model, allows us to extract estimates for the critical couplings and the cr…
We study a two-dimensional frustrated Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the windmill lattice consisting of triangular and dual honeycomb lattice sites. In the classical ground state the spins on different sublattices are decoupled, but quantum and thermal fluctuations drive the system into a coplanar state via an "order from disorder" mechanism. We obtain the finite temperature phase diagram using renormalization group approaches. In the coplanar regime, the relative U$(1)$ phase between the spins on the two sublattices decouples from the remaining degrees of freedom, and is described by a six-sta…
We present the critical theory of a number of zero temperature phase transitions of quantum antiferromagnets and interacting boson systems in two dimensions. The most important example is the transition of the S = 1/2 square lattice antiferromagnet between the Neel state (which breaks spin rotation invariance) and the paramagnetic valence bond solid (which preserves spin rotation invariance but breaks lattice symmetries). We show that these two states are separated by a second order quantum phase transition. The critical theory is not expressed in terms of the order parameters characterizing e…
We show that the RKKY interaction in the two-impurity Anderson model comprise two contributions: a ferromagnetic part stemming from the symmetrized hybridization functions and an anti-ferromagnetic part. We demonstrate that this anti-ferromagnetic contribution can also be generated by an effective local tunneling term between the two impurities. This tunneling can be analytically calculated for particle-hole symmetric impurities. Replacing the full hybridization functions by the symmetric part and this tunneling term leads to the identical low-temperature fixed point spectrum in the numerical …
We compute the multipartite entanglement measures such as the global entanglement of various one- and two-dimensional quantum systems to probe the quantum criticality based on the matrix and tensor product states (MPSs/TPSs). We use infinite time-evolving block decimation (iTEBD) method to find the ground states numerically in the form of MPSs/TPSs, and then evaluate their entanglement measures by the method of tensor renormalization group (TRG). We find these entanglement measures can characterize the quantum phase transitions by their derivative discontinuity right at the critical points in …
A new phenomenology is proposed for the superfluid density of strongly underdoped cuprate superconductors based on recent data for ultra-clean single crystals of YBCO. The data feature a puzzling departure from Uemura scaling and a decline of the slope as the T_c = 0 quantum critical point is approached. We show that this behavior can be understood in terms of the renormalization of quasiparticle effective charge by quantum fluctuations of the superconducting phase as described by a (3+1)-dimensional XY model. We calculate the renormalization of the superfluid density and its slope, explain th…
Duality places an important constraint on the renormalization group flows and the phase diagrams. For self-dual theories, the self-duality can be promoted as a symmetry, this leads to the multi-criticalities. This work investigates a description of the deconfined quantum criticality, the $N_f=2$ QED$_3$, as an example of self-dual theories and its multi-critical behavior under perturbative deformations. The multi-criticality is described by the theory with Gross-Neveu couplings and falls in a different universality class than the standard deconfined quantum criticality. We systematically calcu…
During the last few years, investigations of Rare-Earth materials have made clear that not only the heavy fermion phase in these systems provides interesting physics, but the quantum criticality where such a phase dies exhibits novel phase transition physics not fully understood. Moreover, attempts to study the critical point numerically face the infamous fermion sign problem, which limits their accuracy. Effective action techniques and Callan-Symanzik equations have been very popular in high energy physics, where they enjoy a good record of success. Yet, they have been little exploited for fe…
We study renormalization group flow in a non-local version of quantum electrodynamics (QED). We determine the regime in which the theory flows to a local theory in the infrared and study a possible UV completion of four-dimensional QED. In addition, we find that there exist non-local conformal theories with a one-dimensional conformal manifold and non-local deformations of QED in three dimensions that are exactly marginal. Along the way we develop methods for coupling non-local derivatives to external sources and discuss unitarity and conformal vs. scale invariance of these theories.
Quasiperiodic systems are aperiodic but deterministic, so their critical behavior differs from that of clean systems as well as disordered ones. Quasiperiodic criticality was previously understood only in the special limit where the couplings follow discrete quasiperiodic sequences. Here we consider generic quasiperiodic modulations; we find, remarkably, that for a wide class of spin chains, generic quasiperiodic modulations flow to discrete sequences under a real-space renormalization group transformation. These discrete sequences are therefore fixed points of a \emph{functional} renormalizat…
Using finite size scaling arguments, the critical properties of a chain of interacting anyons can be extracted from the low energy spectrum of a finite system. In Phys. Rev. Lett. 98, 160409 (2007), Feiguin et al. showed that an antiferromagnetic (AFM) chain of Fibonacci anyons on a torus is in the same universality class as the tricritical Ising model, and that criticality is protected by a topological symmetry. In the present paper we first review the graphical formalism for the study of anyons on the disc and demonstrate how this formalism may be consistently extended to the study of system…
Capturing the interplay between electronic correlations and many-particle entanglement requires a unified framework for Hamiltonian and eigenbasis renormalization. In this work, we apply the unitary renormalization group (URG) scheme developed in a companion work (Ref.[1]) to the study of two archetypal models of stongly correlated lattice electrons, one with translation invariance and one without. We obtain detailed insight into the emergence of various gapless and gapped phases of quantum electronic matter by computing effective Hamiltonians as well as entanglement signatures through their r…
We consider a two-dimensional interacting Fermi system which displays a nematic phase within mean-field theory. The system is analyzed using a non-perturbative renormalization-group scheme. We find that order-parameter fluctuations can suppress the nematic order obtained in mean-field theory even at zero temperature. For a suitable choice of parameters a quantum critical point surrounded by a disordered phase can be realized, giving rise to quantum critical behavior in the absence of an ordered regime in the phase diagram.
We consider the role of spontaneous lattice symmetry breaking in strongly interacting two dimensional Dirac systems. The fermion induced quantum (multi-)criticality is described by Dirac fermions coupled to a dynamical order parameter that is composed of mass and emergent gauge fields. This is illustrated for the example of translational symmetry breaking due to charge-density wave order on the honeycomb lattice. Using a renormalization-group analysis we find that the putative emergent Lorentz invariance is violated. Finally, we identify that topological phase transitions are well described by…
We study quantum criticality of the magnetic field induced charge density wave (CDW) order in correlated spinless Dirac fermions on the $π$-flux square lattice at zero temperature as a prototypical example of the magnetic catalysis, by using the infinite density matrix renormalization group. It is found that the CDW order parameter $M(B)$ exhibits an anomalous magnetic field $(B)$ scaling behavior characteristic of the $(2+1)$-dimensional chiral Ising universality class near the quantum critical point, which leads to a strong enhancement of $M(B)$ compared with a mean field result. We also est…
We study the gauge invariance of physical observables in holographic theories under the local diffeomorphism. We find that gauge invariance is intimately related to the holographic renormalisation: the local counter terms defined in the boundary cancel most of gauge dependences of the on-shell action as well as the divergences. There is a mismatch in the degrees of freedom between the bulk theory and the boundary one. We resolve this problem by noticing that there is a residual gauge symmetry(RGS). By extending the RGS such that it satisfies infalling boundary condition at the horizon, we can …
We formulate the effective Gross-Neveu-Yukawa theory of the semimetal-insulator transitions on the honeycomb lattice and compute its quantum critical behavior near three (spatial) dimensions. We find that at the critical point Dirac fermions do not survive as coherent excitations and that the $\sim 1/r$ tail of the weak Coulomb interaction is an irrelevant coupling. The emergent Lorentz invariance near criticality implies a universal ratio of the low-temperature specific heats of the metallic and the rotational-symmetry-broken insulating phase.
We demonstrate that the prototypical two-dimensional Chern insulator hosts exotic quantum multi-criticality in the presence of an appropriate periodic driving: a linear Dirac-like transition coexists with a nodal loop-like transition caused by emerging symmetries. The existence of multiple universality classes and scaling laws can be unambiguously captured by a single renormalization group approach based on the stroboscopic Floquet Hamiltonian, regardless of whether the topological transition is associated with the anomalous edge modes or not.
Monte Carlo simulations of the SU(2)-symmetric deconfined critical point action reveal strong violations of scale invariance for the deconfinement transition. We find compelling evidence that the generic runaway renormalization flow of the gauge coupling is to a weak first order transition, similar to the case of U(1)$\times$U(1) symmetry. Our results imply that recent numeric studies of the Nèel antiferromagnet to valence bond solid quantum phase transition in SU(2)-symmetric models were not accurate enough in determining the nature of the transition.
Control of quantum coherence in many-body system is one of the key issues in modern condensed matter. Conventional wisdom is that lattice vibration is an innate source of decoherence, and amounts of research have been conducted to eliminate lattice effects. Challenging this wisdom, here we show that lattice vibration may not be a decoherence source but an impetus of a novel coherent quantum many-body state. We demonstrate the possibility by studying the transverse-field Ising model on a chain with renormalization group and density-matrix renormalization group method, and theoretically discover…
The long-thought charge Kondo effects have recently been experimentally realized in the quantum Hall regime. This experiment, supported by numerics, exemplifies the realization of two-channel Kondo state, a non-Fermi Liquid, and its crossover to the one-channel counterpart, a Fermi liquid. Scaling up such a platform, we find a hierarchy of non-Fermi Liquids and their tunable crossovers based on a renormalization group analysis. Utilizing results from a conformal field theory, we further examine the universal conductances of this strongly correlated system and their finite temperature scaling, …
We investigate the effect of anti-ferromagnetic (AF) quantum criticality on the magnetic penetration depth $λ(T)$ in line-nodal superconductors, including the cuprates, the iron pnictides, and the heavy-fermion superconductors. The critical magnetic fluctuation renormalizes the current vertex and drastically enhances zero-temperature penetration depth $λ(0)$, which is more remarkable in the iron-pnictide case due to the Fermi-surface topology. Additional temperature ($T$) dependence of the current renormalization makes the expected $T$-linear behavior at low temperatures approaching to $T^{1.5…
We study transitions between distinct phases of one-dimensional periodically driven (Floquet) systems. We argue that these are generically controlled by infinite-randomness fixed points of a strong-disorder renormalization group procedure. Working in the fermionic representation of the prototypical Floquet Ising chain, we leverage infinite randomness physics to provide a simple description of Floquet (multi)criticality in terms of a new type of domain wall associated with time-translational symmetry-breaking and the formation of `Floquet time crystals'. We validate our analysis via numerical s…

There has been much recent progress on exotic surface critical behavior, yet the classical-quantum correspondence of special and extraordinary-log criticality remains largely unclear. Employing worm Monte Carlo simulations, we explore the surface criticality at an emergent superfluid-Mott insulator critical point in the Villain representation, which is believed to connect classical and quantum O(2) critical systems. We observe a special transition with the thermal and magnetic renormalization exponents $y_t=0.58(1)$ and $y_h=1.690(1)$ respectively, which are close to recent estimates from mode…
We use a simple real-space renormalization group approach to investigate the critical behavior of the quantum Ashkin-Teller model, a one-dimensional quantum spin chain possessing a line of criticality along which critical exponents vary continuously. This approach, which is based on exploiting the on-site symmetry of the model, has been shown to be surprisingly accurate for predicting some aspects of the critical behavior of the Ising model. Our investigation explores this approach in more generality, in a model where the critical behavior has a richer structure but which reduces to the simple…
The semimetal-superconductor quantum phase transition on the two-dimensional (2D) surface of a 3D topological insulator is conjectured to exhibit an emergent $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetry, based on a renormalization group (RG) analysis at one-loop order in the $ε$ expansion. We provide additional support for this conjecture by performing a three-loop RG analysis and showing that the supersymmetric fixed point found at this order survives the extrapolation to 2D. We compute critical exponents to order $ε^3$, obtaining the more accurate value $ν\approx 0.985$ for the correlation length exponent …
Quantum critical points in quasiperiodic magnets can realize new universality classes, with critical properties distinct from those of clean or disordered systems. Here, we study quantum phase transitions separating ferromagnetic and paramagnetic phases in the quasiperiodic $q$-state Potts model in $2+1d$. Using a controlled real-space renormalization group approach, we find that the critical behavior is largely independent of $q$, and is controlled by an infinite-quasiperiodicity fixed point. The correlation length exponent is found to be $ν=1$, saturating a modified version of the Harris-Luc…
We study the nonequilibrium properties of a nonergodic random quantum chain in which highly excited eigenstates exhibit critical properties usually associated with quantum critical ground states. The ground state and excited states of this system belong to different universality classes, characterized by infinite-randomness quantum critical behavior. Using strong-disorder renormalization group techniques, we show that the crossover between the zero and finite energy density regimes is universal. We analytically derive a flow equation describing the unitary dynamics of this isolated system at f…
We investigate the superfluid-insulator quantum phase transition of one-dimensional bosons with off-diagonal disorder by means of large-scale Monte-Carlo simulations. For weak disorder, we find the transition to be in the same universality class as the superfluid-Mott insulator transition of the clean system. The nature of the transition changes for stronger disorder. Beyond a critical disorder strength, we find nonuniversal, disorder-dependent critical behavior. We compare our results to recent perturbative and strong-disorder renormalization group predictions. We also discuss experimental im…
We present a functional renormalization group analysis of a quantum critical point in two-dimensional metals involving Fermi surface reconstruction due to the onset of spin-density wave order. Its critical theory is controlled by a fixed point in which the order parameter and fermionic quasiparticles are strongly coupled and acquire spectral functions with a common dynamic critical exponent. We obtain results for critical exponents and for the variation in the quasiparticle spectral weight around the Fermi surface. Our analysis is implemented on a two-band variant of the spin-fermion model whi…
We study the quantum phase transition of $U(1)$ - charged Dirac fermions Yukawa-coupled to the Kekulé valence bond solid order parameter with $Z_3$ symmetry of the honeycomb lattice. The symmetry allows for the presence of the term in the action which is cubic in the Kekulé order parameter, and which is expected to prevent the quantum phase transition in question from being continuous. The Gross-Neveu-Yukawa theory for the transition is investigated using a perturbative renormalization group and within the $ε$ expansion close to four space-time dimensions. For a vanishing $U(1)$ charge we show…
We present a family of nonrelativistic Yang-Mills gauge theories in D+1 dimensions whose free-field limit exhibits quantum critical behavior with gapless excitations and dynamical critical exponent z=2. The ground state wavefunction is intimately related to the partition function of relativistic Yang-Mills in D dimensions. The gauge couplings exhibit logarithmic scaling and asymptotic freedom in the upper critical spacetime dimension, equal to 4+1. The theories can be deformed in the infrared by a relevant operator that restores Poincare invariance as an accidental symmetry. In the large-N lim…
