We study the gauge invariance of physical observables in holographic theories under the local diffeomorphism. We find that gauge invariance is intimately related to the holographic renormalisation: the local counter terms defined in the boundary cancel most of gauge dependences of the on-shell action as well as the divergences. There is a mismatch in the degrees of freedom between the bulk theory and the boundary one. We resolve this problem by noticing that there is a residual gauge symmetry(RGS). By extending the RGS such that it satisfies infalling boundary condition at the horizon, we can understand the problem in the context of general holographic embedding of a global symmetry at the boundary into the local gauge symmetry in the bulk.
At strong coupling holographic studies have shown that heavy ion collisions do not obey normal boost invariance. Here we study a modified boost invariance through a complex shift in time, and show that this leads to surprisingly good agreement with numerical holographic computations. When including perturbations the agreement becomes even better, both in the hydrodynamic and the far-from-equilibrium regime. One of the main advantages is an analytic formulation of the stress-energy tensor of the longitudinal dynamics of holographic heavy ion collisions.
We explore the role of a holographic Wilsonian cut-off in simple probe brane models with chiral symmetry breaking/restoration phase transitions. The Wilsonian cut-off allows us to define supergravity solutions for off-shell configurations and hence to define a potential for the chiral condensate. We pay particular attention to the need for configurations whose action we are comparing to have the same IR and UV boundary conditions. We exhibit new first and second order phase transitions with changing cut-off. We derive the effective potential for the condensate including mean field and BKT type…
We study quenched disorder in strongly correlated systems via holography, focusing on the thermodynamic effects of mild electric disorder. Disorder is introduced through a random potential which is assumed to self-average on macroscopic scales. Studying the flow of this distribution with energy scale leads us to develop a holographic functional renormalization scheme. We test this scheme by computing thermodynamic quantities and confirming that the Harris criterion for relevance, irrelevance or marginality of quenched disorder holds.
The equivalence between the holographic renormalization group and the soft dilaton theorem is shown for a class of wrapped metrics solutions of the string beta function equations for the bosonic string.
Holographic Renormalization Group (RG) in nine dimensions is considered. The d8 holographic conformal anomaly is found. It should correspond to d8 CFT in AdS_9/CFT_8 correspondence. The comparison of holographic and QFT anomalies in d8 de Sitter space is done. It may give the indication for rigorous AdS_9/CFT_8 correspondence proposal.
In this lecture, we review the derivation of the holographic renormalization group given in hep-th/9912012. Some extra background material is included, and various applications are discussed.
We elaborate on our earlier proposal connecting entanglement renormalization and holographic duality in which we argued that a tensor network can be reinterpreted as a kind of skeleton for an emergent holographic space. Here we address the question of the large $N$ limit where on the holographic side the gravity theory becomes classical and a non-fluctuating smooth spacetime description emerges. We show how a number of features of holographic duality in the large $N$ limit emerge naturally from entanglement renormalization, including a classical spacetime generated by entanglement, a sparse sp…
It is shown that the Holographic Renormalization Group can be formulated universally within Quantum Field Theory as (the quantization of) the Hamiltonian flow on the cotangent bundle to the space of gauge-invariant single-trace operators supplied with the canonical symplectic structure. The classical Hamiltonian dynamics is recovered in the large $N$ limit.
Notes on holographic renormalization as a tool for UV analysis and derivation of the two-point Ward identity encoding symmetry breaking. Goldstone theorem is reviewed, discussing in particular the modifications required by its extension to non-relativistic field theories. The Ward identity encoding both spontaneous and explicit breaking are derived by general principles. Holographic renormalization is presented in a quite operational fashion. The derivation of the Ward identity in holography is illustrated by an example.
We revisit the unparticle interactions and propagators from the AdS-CFT point of view, and we show how the contact terms and their renormalization group flow appear in the context of the holographic renormalization. We study both vector unparticles and unfermions, uncovering the relevant boundary conditions and renormalization group flows.
The bulk locality in the constructive holographic renormalization group requires miraculous cancellations among various local renormalization group functions. The cancellation is not only from the properties of the spectrum but from more detailed aspects of operator product expansions in relation to conformal anomaly. It is remarkable that one-loop computation of the universal local renormalization group functions in the weakly coupled limit of the $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory fulfils the necessary condition for the cancellation in the strongly coupled limit in its $SL(2,\mathbf{Z})…
To clarify the mathematical structure of the RG-derived holographic dual field theory, we rewrite the string-theory based conventionally utilized dual holographic effective field theory based on the ADM decomposition of the metric tensor. This comparison leads us to claim that the RG-derived emergent holographic dual field theory takes into account higher-derivative curvature terms with gauge fixing in the string-theory based conventionally utilized Einstein-Klein-Gordon theory, giving rise to the RG flow of the metric tensor beyond the AdS (anti-de Sitter space) geometry. Furthermore, we comp…
We review holographic renormalization for non-conformal branes using the Hamilton-Jacobi formalism. We provide the tools required for the computation of the holographic dictionary, while we present some marginally new technical results regarding holographic renormalization for $Dp$-branes, $p<5$, for Einstein-Maxwell theory coupled to a dilaton. The computations are based on a recursive algorithm by Papadimitriou, that solves the radial Hamilton-Jacobi equation in the asymptotic boundary of the bulk. This paper is a short version of the Master thesis of the author written in 2014 at the Instit…
In holographic duality, dynamics along the emergent extra-dimensional space describes a renormalization group (RG) flow of the corresponding quantum field theory (QFT). Following this idea, we develop an emergent holographic description of a QFT, where not only the information of the RG flow is introduced into an IR holographic dual effective field theory (HDEFT), but also the UV information of the QFT is encoded in the HDEFT through the IR boundary condition. In particular, we argue that this dual holographic construction is self-consistent within the assumption of bulk locality, showing the …
Holographic renormalization group flows can be interpreted in terms of effective field theory. Based on such an interpretation, a formula for the running scaling dimensions of gauge-invariant operators along such flows is proposed. The formula is checked for some simple examples from the AdS/CFT correspondence, but can be applied also in non-AdS/non-CFT cases.
In AdS/CFT corresponding, the UV divergence of generating functional on the field theory can be removed as the IR divergence in the gravity. This geometric process is well known as holographic renormalization. The standard method of holographic renormalization is based on the Fefferman-Graham expansion, which is strict and universal but technically cumbersome. To improve the technique, different methods have been proposed. Here we develop an alternative approach to holographic renormalization based on the Hamilton-Jacobi formulation of gravity. Compared to previous approaches, its distinguishi…
We develop parallels between the holographic renormalization group in the bulk and the Wilsonian renormalization group in the dual field theory. Our philosophy differs from most previous work on the holographic RG; the most notable feature is the key role of multi-trace operators. We work out the forms of various single- and double-trace flows. The key question, `what cutoff on the field theory corresponds to a radial cutoff in the bulk?' is left unanswered, but by sharpening the analogy between the two sides we identify possible directions.
We discuss Holographic Renormalization Group equations in the presence of fermions and form fields in the bulk. The existence of a holographically dual quantum field theory for a given bulk gravity theory imposes consistency conditions on the ranks of the form fields, the fermion - form field couplings, and leads to a novel Ward identity.
We study a conjectured connection between the AdS/CFT and a real-space quantum renormalization group scheme, the multi-scale entanglement renormalization ansatz (MERA). By making a close contact with the holographic formula of the entanglement entropy, we propose a general definition of the metric in the MERA in the extra holographic direction, which is formulated purely in terms of quantum field theoretical data. Using the continuum version of the MERA (cMERA), we calculate this emergent holographic metric explicitly for free scalar boson and free fermions theories, and check that the metric …
We study holographic renormalization of 3D minimal massive gravity using the Chern-Simons-like formulation of the model. We explicitly present Gibbons- Hawking term as well as all counterterms needed to make the action finite in terms of dreibein and spin-connection. This can be used to find correlation functions of stress tensor of holographic dual field theory.
We construct a three-dimensional geometry interpolating two different AdS spaces. From the dual quantum field theory viewpoint, it corresponds to a nontrivial renormalization group flow from a UV to another IR conformal field theory. On this geometry, we discuss the change of the central charge in a momentum-space and real-space renormalization group flow. The result shows in both renormalization prescriptions that the central charge monotonically decreases along the renormalization group flow.
Anti-de Sitter (AdS) space can be foliated by a family of nested surfaces homeomorphic to the boundary of the space. We propose a holographic correspondence between theories living on each surface in the foliation and quantum gravity in the enclosed volume. The flow of observables between our ``interior'' theories is described by a renormalization group equation. The dependence of these flows on the foliation of space encodes bulk geometry.
We give a holographic explanation how the renormalization group approach to singular perturbations in non-linear differential equations proposed by Chen, Goldenfeld and Oono is indeed equivalent to a renormalization group method in quantum field theories proposed by Gell-Mann and Low via AdS/CFT correspondence.
We look into the $AdS$ black holes from two-dimensional gravity perspective. In this work, we extend the previous results of holographic renormalization group flows to dimensions two. By introducing a superpotential, we derive the flow equations in two-dimensional dilaton gravity. We find a quantity which monotonically decreases along flows and give some comments on holographic $c$-theorem. As examples, we show that recently studied supersymmetric $AdS$ black hole solutions generically dimensionally reduce to two-dimensional dilaton gravity, and obtain the flow equations for black hole solutio…
We investigate the structure of holographic renormalization in the presence of sources for irrelevant operators. By working perturbatively in the sources we avoid issues related to the non-renormalizability of the dual field theory. We find new classes of divergences which appear to be non-local on the gravity side. However in all cases a systematic renormalization procedure exists involving either standard local counterterms or new counterterms which may be interpreted as multi-trace counterterms in the field theory. The multi-trace counterterms reflect a more intricate relation between sourc…
We study a mathematical relationship between holographic Wilsonian renormalization group and stochastic quantization framework. We extend the original proposal given in arXiv:1209.2242 to interacting theories. The original proposal suggests that fictitious time(or stochastic time) evolution of stochastic 2-point correlation function will be identical to the radial evolution of the double trace operator of certain classes of holographic models, which are free theories in AdS space. We study holographic gravity models with interactions in AdS space and establish a map between the holographic ren…
We extend the relation between stochstic quantization and Holographic Wilsonian Renormalization Group to the massive fermion case in Euclidean AdS space. The original suggestion about the explicit relation between the two theories is in arXiv:1209.2242. To give a fermion bulk action the Dirichlet boundary condition and the Neumann boundary condition, there are some additional terms to the bulk action. We have confirmed that the relation also hold for massive fermion case.
We show that Polchinski equations in the D--dimensional matrix scalar field theory can be reduced at large $N$ to the Hamiltonian equations in a (D+1)-dimensional theory. In the subsector of the $\Tr ϕ^l$ (for all $l$) operators we find the exact form of the corresponding Hamiltonian. The relation to the Holographic renormalization group is discussed.
We give a prescription for calculating the holographic Weyl anomaly in arbitrary dimension within the framework based on the Hamilton-Jacobi equation proposed by de Boer, Verlinde and Verlinde. A few sample calculations are made and shown to reproduce the results that are obtained to this time with a different method. We further discuss continuum limits, and argue that the holographic renormalization group may describe the renormalized trajectory in the parameter space. We also clarify the relationship of the present formalism to the analysis carried out by Henningson and Skenderis.
We investigate subregion holographic complexity in the context of renormalization group flow geometries. We use both the Poincaŕe slicing and the Janus ansatz as holographic duals to renormalization group flows in the boundary conformal field theory. In the former metric, subregion complexity is computed for a disc and a strip shaped entangling region. For the disc shaped region, consistent emergence of length scales for flow to the deep infra-red is established. For strip shaped regions, we find that complexity cannot locate holographic phase transitions in a sharp domain wall scenario. For s…
We review the formalism of holographic renormalization. We start by discussing mathematical results on asymptotically anti-de Sitter spacetimes. We then outline the general method of holographic renormalization. The method is illustrated by working all details in a simple example: a massive scalar field on anti-de Sitter spacetime. The discussion includes the derivation of the on-shell renormalized action, of holographic Ward identities, anomalies and RG equations, and the computation of renormalized one-, two- and four-point functions. We then discuss the application of the method to holograp…
We have studied holographic Wilsonian renormalization group (HWRG) of free massless fermionic fields in AdS space and its stochastic quantization(SQ) by identifying the Euclidean action with its boundary on-shell action. The natural extension of the relation between stochastic 2-point correlation function and double trace coupling obtained from HWRG computation conjectured in arXiv:1209.2242 to fermionic fields is established. We have confirmed that the stochastic 2-point function precisely captures the radial flow of the double trace coupling via this relation.
Holographic renormalization is a systematic procedure for regulating divergences in observables in asymptotically locally AdS spacetimes. For dual boundary field theories which are supersymmetric it is natural to ask whether this defines a supersymmetric renormalization scheme. Recent results in localization have brought this question into sharp focus: rigid supersymmetry on a curved boundary requires specific geometric structures, and general arguments imply that BPS observables, such as the partition function, are invariant under certain deformations of these structures. One can then ask if …
A heavy quark moving through a strongly coupled deconfined plasma has a holographic dual description as a string moving in a black brane geometry. We apply the holographic Wilsonian renormalization method to derive a holographic effective string action dual to the heavy quark. The effective action only depends on the geometry between the black brane horizon and a cutoff localized in the radial direction, corresponding to the IR of the dual theory. We derive RG flow equations for the coefficients in the effective action and show that the force acting on the heavy quark is independent of the pos…
We consider a holographic description of the inflationary multiverse, according to which the wave function of the universe is interpreted as the generating functional for a lower dimensional Euclidean theory. We analyze a simple model where transitions between inflationary vacua occur through bubble nucleation, and the inflating part of spacetime consists of de Sitter regions separated by thin bubble walls. In this model, we present some evidence that the dual theory is conformally invariant in the UV.
We consider the holographic duality for a generic bulk theory of scalars coupled to gravity. By studying the fluctuations around Poincare invariant backgrounds with non-vanishing scalars, with the scalar and metric boundary conditions considered as being independent, we obtain all one- and two-point functions in the dual renormalization group flows of the boundary field theory. Operator and vev flows are explicitly distinguished by means of the physical condensates. The method is applied to the GPPZ and Coulomb branch flows, and field theoretical expectations are confirmed.
We study holographic renormalization for three dimensional new massive gravity (NMG). By studying the general fall off conditions for the metric allowed by the model at infinity, we show that at the critical point where the central charges of the dual CFT are zero it contains a leading logarithmic behavior. In the context of AdS/CFT correspondence it can be identified as a source for an irrelevant operator in the dual CFT. The presence of the logarithmic fall off may be interpreted as the fact that the dual CFT would be a LCFT.
We clarify the relation between the recently formulated holographic renormalization group equation and Polchinski's exact renormalization group equation.
We perform holographic renormalization for probe branes in AdS_5 x S^5. We show that for four known probe D-branes wrapping an AdS_m x S^n, the counterterms needed to render the action finite are identical to those for the free, massive scalar in AdS_m plus counterterms for the renormalization of the volume of AdS_m. The four cases we consider are the probe D7, two different probe D5's and a probe D3. In the D7 case there are scheme-dependent finite counterterms that can be fixed by supersymmetry.
We examine holographic renormalization by the singular value decomposition (SVD) of matrix data generated by the Monte Carlo snapshot of the 2D classical Ising model at criticality. To take the continuous limit of the SVD enables us to find the mathematical form of each SVD component by the inverse Mellin transformation as well as the power-law behavior of the SVD spectrum. We find that each SVD component is characterized by the two-point spin correlator with a finite correlation length. Then, the continuous limit of the decomposition index in the SVD corresponds to the inverse of the correlat…
We investigate the holographic renormalization of a charged black brane with or without a dilaton field, whose dual field theory describes a dense medium at finite temperature. In a dense medium, two different thermodynamic descriptions are possible due to an additional conserved charge. These two different thermodynamic ensembles are classified by the asymptotic boundary condition of the bulk gauge field. We show that in the holographic renormalization regularity of all bulk fields can reproduce consistent thermodynamic quantities and that the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy is nothing but the ren…
We analyse non-local rotating observables in holography corresponding to spinning bound states. To renormalize their energies and momenta we suggest and discuss different holographic renormalization schemes motivated by the static non-local observables. Namely the holographic renormalization and the rotating color singlet mass subtraction scheme. In the holographic renormalization we identify the infinite boundary terms and subtract them. In the mass subtraction scheme we evaluate the energy of a spinning trailing string corresponding to the color charged singlet which experiences dragging phe…
We consider the problem of IR divergences of the action in the covariant formulation of teleparallel gravity in asymptotically Minkowski spacetimes. We show that divergences are caused by inertial effects and can be removed by adding an appropriate surface term, leading to the renormalized action. This process can be viewed as a teleparallel analogue of holographic renormalization. Moreover, we explore the variational problem in teleparallel gravity and explain how the variation with respect to the spin connection should be performed.
The Hamilton-Jacobi method in holography has produced important results both at a renormalization group (RG) fixed point and away from it. In this paper we use the Hamilton-Jacobi method to compute the holographic trace anomaly for four- and six-dimensional boundary conformal field theories (CFTs), assuming higher-derivative gravity and interactions of scalar fields in the bulk. The scalar field contributions to the anomaly appear in CFTs with exactly marginal operators. Moving away from the fixed point, we show that the Hamilton-Jacobi formalism provides a deep connection between the holograp…
We consider holographic renormalization for the decoupling limit of coincident Dp-branes. We truncate the theory to the supergravity sector which is homogeneous on the (8-p)-sphere and carries only RR electric (p+2)-flux, leaving a graviton and two scalar degrees of freedom associated to the dilaton and the sphere radius. We non-linearly construct the asymptotic graviton and dilaton deformations - the analog of the Graham-Fefferman expansion for AdS/CFT - and compute counterterms to give a finite renormalized bulk action and dual one point functions. Restricting to linear deformations we find …
We show that a generalized version of the holographic principle can be derived from the Hamiltonian description of information flow within a quantum system that maintains a separable state. We then show that this generalized holographic principle entails a general principle of gauge invariance. When this is realized in an ambient Lorentzian space-time, gauge invariance under the Poincare group is immediately achieved. We apply this pathway to retrieve the action of gravity. The latter is cast a la Wilczek through a similar formulation derived by MacDowell and Mansouri, which involves the repre…
We consider a very general dilaton-axion system coupled to Einstein-Hilbert gravity in arbitrary dimension and we carry out holographic renormalization for any dimension up to and including five dimensions. This is achieved by developing a new systematic algorithm for iteratively solving the radial Hamilton-Jacobi equation in a derivative expansion. The boundary term derived is valid not only for asymptotically AdS backgrounds, but also for more general asymptotics, including non-conformal branes and Improved Holographic QCD. In the second half of the paper, we apply the general result to Impr…
We study the fate of reparametrization invariance of Wilson loops, also known as 'zig-zag' symmetry, under the RG flow using some simple cases as guidance. We restrict our analysis to large-$N$, strongly coupled CFTs and use the holographic dual description of a Wilson loop as a fundamental string embedded in asymptotically AdS spaces, at zero and nonzero temperature. We then introduce a cutoff in the holographic radial direction and integrate out the the section of the string closer to the AdS boundary in the spirit of holographic Wilsonian renormalization. We make explicit the map between Wi…
First, we reformulate RG transformations in a recursive way with introduction of an order-parameter field. As a result, we manifest the RG flow of an effective field theory through the emergence of an extra dimensional space, where both RG $β-$functions of coupling functions and RG flow equation of the order-parameter field appear in the resulting effective action explicitly through the extra dimensional space. Second, we consider an effective dual holographic description derived recently, where the classical gravity theory of the large $N$ limit takes into account quantum corrections in the a…
The spectrum of two-point functions in a holographic renormalization group flow from an ultraviolet (UV) to an infrared (IR) conformal fixed point is necessarily continuous. For a toy model, the spectral function does not only show the expected UV and IR behaviours, but other interesting features such as sharp peaks and oscillations in the UV. The spectral functions for the SU(3)xU(1) flow in AdS_4/CFT_3 and the SU(2)xU(1) flow in AdS_5/CFT_4 are calculated numerically. They exhibit a simple cross-over behaviour and reproduce the conformal dimensions of the dual operators in the UV and IR conf…
We perform a holographic renormalization of gravity duals to little string theories. In particular, we construct counterterms which yield a well-defined type II action for NS-sector linear dilaton backgrounds. Our methods are based on a similar recent construction in asymptotically flat spacetimes, and our work demonstrates in detail the parallels between asymptotically flat and linear dilaton boundary conditions. The counterterms guarantee that (i) the on-shell action is finite and (ii) asymptotically linear dilaton solutions are stationary points of the action under all boundary condition pr…
Recently, a practical approach to holographic renormalization has been developed based on the Hamilton-Jacobi formulation. Using a simple Einstein-scalar theory, we clarify that this approach does not conflict with the Hamiltonian constraint as it seems. Then we apply it to the holographic renormalization of massive gravity. We assume that the shift vector is falling off fast enough asymptotically. We derive the counterterms up to the boundary dimension d=4. Interestingly, we find that the conformal anomaly can even occur in odd dimensions, which is different from the Einstein gravity. We chec…
Applying recursive renormalization group transformations to a scalar field theory, we obtain an effective quantum gravity theory with an emergent extra dimension, described by a dual holographic Einstein-Klein-Gordon type action. Here, the dynamics of both the dual order-parameter field and the metric tensor field originate from density-density and energy-momentum tensor-tensor effective interactions, respectively, in the recursive renormalization group transformation, performed approximately in the Gaussian level. This linear approximation in the recursive renormalization group transformation…
We study the holographic renormalization group (RG) flow in the presence of higher-order curvature corrections to the $(d+1)$-dimensional Einstein-Hilbert (EH) action for an arbitrary interacting scalar matter field by using the superpotential approach. We find the critical points of the RG flow near the local minima and maxima of the potential and show the existence of the bounce solutions. In contrast to the EH gravity, regarding the values of couplings of the bulk theory, superpotential may have both upper and lower bounds. Moreover, the behavior of the RG flow controls by singular curves. …
We study the thermodynamics and the jet quenching parameter of a black hole solution dual to a SQCD-like plasma which includes the backreaction of fundamental flavors. The free energy is calculated in several ways, including some recently proposed holographic renormalization prescriptions. The validity of the latter is confirmed by the consistency with the other methods. The resulting thermodynamic properties are similar to the Little String Theory ones: the temperature is fixed at the Hagedorn value and the free energy is vanishing. Finally, an accurate analysis of the relevant string configu…
In this work, we present a holographic renormalization scheme for asymptotically anti-de Sitter spacetimes in which the dual renormalization scheme of the boundary field theory is dimensional regularization. This constitutes a new level of precision in the holographic dictionary and paves the way for the exact matching of scheme dependent quantities, such as holographic beta functions, with field theory computations. Furthermore, the renormalization procedure identifies a local source field which satisfies the equations of motion along renormalization group flows, resolving a long-standing puz…
