We show that every holographic entropy inequality can be recast in the form: "some entanglement wedges reach deeper in the bulk than some other entanglement wedges." When the inequality is saturated, the two sets of wedges reach equally deep. Because bulk depth geometrizes CFT scales, the inequalities enforce and protect the holographic Renormalization Group.
We investigate numerically several proxy measures for the number of states contained within the holographic entropy cone, compared to the number contained within the quantum entropy cone, for states with $3$ and $4$ parties. We find an interesting tension: while measures focused on calculating the volume ratios between the two cones indicate that the quantum cone is much larger than the holographic one, measures based on the generation of random states and then calculating the entropies thereof imply that almost all such randomly generated states are also contained within the holographic entro…
The notion of a holographic entropy cone has recently been introduced and it has been proven that this cone is polyhedral. However, the original definition was fully geometric and did not strictly require a holographic duality. We introduce a new definition of the cone, insisting that the geometries used for its construction should be dual to states of a CFT. As a result, the polyhedrality of this holographic cone does not immediately follow. A numerical evaluation of the Euclidean action for the geometries that realize extremal rays of the original cone indicates that these are subdominant bu…
We examine the five-region holographic entropy cone inequalities for the special case of the AdS$_3$-Vaidya metric for a variety of boundary configurations. This is done by numerically solving the geodesic equation in the bulk for various boundary configurations. In all the cases we examine, we find that all the inequalities are satisfied when the bulk satisfies the null energy condition, while the inequalities are all violated when the bulk spacetime violates the null energy condition. A proof of the five-region holographic entropy cone inequalities for the dynamical bulk case remains an open…

Even though little is known about the quantum entropy cone for $N\geq4$ subsystems, holographic techniques allow one to get a handle on the subspace of entropy vectors corresponding to states with gravity duals. For static spacetimes and $N$ boundary subsystems, this space is a convex polyhedral cone known as the holographic entropy cone $\mathcal{C}_N$ for $N$ regions. While an explicit description of $\mathcal{C}_N$ was accomplished for all $N\leq4$ in the initial study, the information given about larger $N$ was only partial already for $\mathcal{C}_5$. This letter provides a complete const…
In holographic duality, if a boundary state has a geometric description that realizes the Ryu-Takayanagi proposal then its entanglement entropies must obey certain inequalities that together define the so-called holographic entropy cone. A large family of such inequalities have been proven under the assumption that the bulk geometry is static, using a method involving contraction maps. By using kinematic space techniques, we show that in two boundary (three bulk) dimensions, all entropy inequalities that can be proven in the static case by contraction maps must also hold in holographic states …
We initiate a systematic enumeration and classification of entropy inequalities satisfied by the Ryu-Takayanagi formula for conformal field theory states with smooth holographic dual geometries. For 2, 3, and 4 regions, we prove that the strong subadditivity and the monogamy of mutual information give the complete set of inequalities. This is in contrast to the situation for generic quantum systems, where a complete set of entropy inequalities is not known for 4 or more regions. We also find an infinite new family of inequalities applicable to 5 or more regions. The set of all holographic entr…
The domain of allowed von Neumann entropies of a holographic field theory carves out a polyhedral cone -- the holographic entropy cone -- in entropy space. Such polyhedral cones are characterized by their extreme rays. For an arbitrary number of parties, it is known that the so-called perfect tensors are extreme rays. In this work, we constrain the form of the remaining extreme rays by showing that they correspond to geometries with vanishing mutual information between any two parties, ensuring the absence of Bell pair type entanglement between them. This is tantamount to proving that besides …
We consider banana shaped regions as examples of compact regions, whose boundary has two conical singularities. Their regularised holographic entropy is calculated with all divergent as well as finite terms. The coefficient of the squared logarithmic divergence, also in such a case with internally curved boundary, agrees with that calculated in the literature for infinite circular cones with their internally flat boundary. For the otherwise conformally invariant coefficient of the ordinary logarithmic divergence an anomaly under exceptional conformal transformations is observed. The constructi…
In this note we show that the holographic entanglement entropy inequalities that hold for constant time slices are also valid for large regions and times in covariant spacetimes containing collapsing black branes, where the leading part of the entropy is computed by the simplified membrane theory of arXiv:1803.10244.
We study corner contributions to holographic entanglement entropy in non-conformal backgrounds: a kink for D2-branes as well as a cone and two different types of crease for D4-branes. Unlike 2+1-dimensional CFTs, the corner contribution to the holographic entanglement entropy of D2-branes exhibits a power law behaviour rather than a logarithmic term. However, the logarithmic term emerges in the holographic entanglement entropy of D4-branes. We identify the logarithmic term for a cone in D4-brane background as the universal contribution under appropriate limits and compare it with other physica…
Significant work has gone into determining the minimal set of entropy inequalities that determine the holographic entropy cone. Holographic systems with three or more parties have been shown to obey additional inequalities that generic quantum systems do not. We consider a two dimensional conformal field theory that is a single boundary of a holographic system and find four additional non-linear inequalities which are derived from strong subadditivity and the formula for the entanglement entropy of a region on the conformal field theory. We also present an equality obtained by application of a…
We study holographic entanglement entropy in Gauss-Bonnet gravity following a global quench. It is known that in dynamical scenarios the entanglement entropy probe penetrates the apparent horizon. The goal of this work is to study how far behind the horizon can the entanglement probe reach in a Gauss-Bonnet theory. We find that the behavior is quite different depending on the sign of the Gauss-Bonnet coupling $λ_{GB}$. We show that for $λ_{GB} > 0$ the holographic entanglement entropy probe explores less of the spacetime behind the horizon than in Einstein gravity. On the other hand, for $λ_{G…
Motivated by $T{\overline T}$ deformation of a conformal field theory we compute holographic complexity for a black brane solution with a cut off using "complexity=action" proposal. In order to have a late time behavior consistent with Lloyd's bound one is forced to have a cut off behind the horizon whose value is fixed by the boundary cut off. Using this result we compute holographic complexity for two dimensional AdS solutions where we get expected late times linear growth. It is in contrast with the naively computation which is done without assuming the cut off where the complexity approach…
We discuss the behaviour of holographic entanglement entropy following a local quench in 2+1 dimensional strongly coupled CFTs. The entanglement generated by the quench propagates along an emergent light-cone, reminiscent of the Lieb-Robinson light-cone propagation of correlations in non-relativistic systems. We find the speed of propagation is bounded from below by the entanglement tsunami velocity obtained earlier for global quenches in holographic systems, and from above by the speed of light. The former is realized for sufficiently broad quenches, while the latter pertains for well localiz…
We explore the structure of holographic entropy relations (associated with 'information quantities' given by a linear combination of entanglement entropies of spatial sub-partitions of a CFT state with geometric bulk dual). Such entropy relations can be recast in multiple ways, some of which have significant advantages. Motivated by the already-noted simplification of entropy relations when recast in terms of multipartite information, we explore additional simplifications when recast in a new basis, which we dub the K-basis, constructed from perfect tensor structures. For the fundamental infor…
We develop a convenient framework for characterizing multipartite entanglement in composite systems, based on relations between entropies of various subsystems. This continues the program initiated in arXiv:1808.07871, of using holography to effectively recast the geometric problem into an algebraic one. We prove that, for an arbitrary number of parties, our procedure identifies a finite set of entropic information quantities that we conveniently represent geometrically in the form of an arrangement of hyperplanes. This leads us to define the holographic entropy arrangement, whose algebraic an…
In this work, we generalize the graph-theoretic techniques used for the holographic entropy cone to study hypergraphs and their analogously-defined entropy cone. This allows us to develop a framework to efficiently compute entropies and prove inequalities satisfied by hypergraphs. In doing so, we discover a class of quantum entropy vectors which reach beyond those of holographic states and obey constraints intimately related to the ones obeyed by stabilizer states and linear ranks. We show that, at least up to 4 parties, the hypergraph cone is identical to the stabilizer entropy cone, thus dem…
We discuss the holographic reconstruction of static thin bubble walls in BTZ black hole geometries. We consider two reconstruction prescriptions suggested in recent years: hole-ography and light-cone cuts, in the context of thin bubble walls, and comment on their applicability in the presence of non-trivial matter in the bulk. We find that while the light-cone cuts prescription goes through within its own limitations, the current hole-ographic approaches are inadequate to describe bubble spacetimes completely. Much like entanglement shadows found around BTZ black holes and conical defects in t…
We propose a novel codimension-n holography, called cone holography, between a gravitational theory in $(d+1)$-dimensional conical spacetime and a CFT on the $(d+1-n)$-dimensional defects. Similar to wedge holography, the cone holography can be obtained by taking the zero-volume limit of holographic defect CFT. Remarkably, it can be regarded as a holographic dual of the edge modes on the defects. For one class of solutions, we prove that the cone holography is equivalent to AdS/CFT, by showing that the classical gravitational action and thus the CFT partition function in large N limit are the …
We study thermalization in the holographic (1+1)-dimensional CFT after simultaneous generation of two high-energy excitations in the antipodal points on the circle. The holographic picture of such quantum quench is the creation of BTZ black hole from a collision of two massless particles. We perform holographic computation of entanglement entropy and mutual information in the boundary theory and analyze their evolution with time. We show that equilibration of the entanglement in the regions which contained one of the initial excitations is generally similar to that in other holographic quench …
The positivity of relative entropy for spatial subsystems in a holographic CFT implies the positivity of certain quantities in the dual gravitational theory. In this note, we consider CFT subsystems whose boundaries lie on the lightcone of a point $p$. We show that the positive gravitational quantity which corresponds to the relative entropy for such a subsystem $A$ is a novel notion of energy associated with a gravitational subsystem bounded by the minimal area extremal surface $\tilde{A}$ associated with $A$ and by the AdS boundary region $\hat{A}$ corresponding to the part of the lightcone …
Recent work has characterized the various inequalities that entanglement entropies represented by min-cuts on hypergraphs will satisfy. This collection, the hypergraph entropy cone, can be seen as a generalization of the holographic entropy cone which describes the entropies given by both min-cuts on 2-graphs and those of holographic states in AdS/CFT. In this article we describe a generalization of bit threads which allows us to describe max multiflows on hypergraphs. We further comment on its properties and interpretation in holography.
The entanglement entropy for smooth regions $\cal A$ has a logarithmic divergent contribution with a shape dependent coefficient and that for regions with conical singularities an additional $\log ^2$ term. Comparing the coefficient of this extra term, obtained by direct holographic calculation for an infinite cone, with the corresponding limiting case for the shape dependent coefficient for a regularised cone, a mismatch by a factor two has been observed in the literature. We discuss several aspects of this issue. In particular a regularisation of $\cal A$, intrinsically delivered by the holo…
We study the evolution of entanglement entropy in a 2-dimensional equilibration process that has a holographic description in terms of a Vaidya geometry. It models a unitary evolution in which the field theory starts in a pure state, its vacuum, and undergoes a perturbation that brings it far from equilibrium. The entanglement entropy in this set up provides a measurement of the quantum entanglement in the system. Using holographic techniques we recover the same result obtained before from the study of processes triggered by a sudden change in a parameter of the hamiltonian, known as quantum q…
What do simple clocks, simple computers, black holes, space-time foam, and holographic principle have in common? I will show that the physics behind them is inter-related, linking together our concepts of information, gravity, and quantum uncertainty. Thus, the physics that sets the limits to computation and clock precision also yields Hawking radiation of black holes and the holographic principle. Moreover, the latter two strongly imply that space-time undergoes much larger quantum fluctuations than what the folklore suggests --- large enough to be detected with modern gravitational-wave inte…
We discuss the time dependence of subsystem entropies in interacting quantum systems. As a model for the time dependence, we suggest that the entropy is as large as possible given two constraints: one follows from the existence of an emergent light cone, and the other is a conjecture associated to the "entanglement velocity" $v_E$. We compare this model to new holographic and spin chain computations, and to an operator growth picture. Finally, we introduce a second way of computing the emergent light cone speed in holographic theories that provides a boundary dynamics explanation for a special…
In this paper we show that in addition to the known minimal surfaces which appear in the literature for computing the entanglement entropy there are other minimal surfaces with non-zero extrinsic curvature. We use the approach of regularization procedure for computing the quadratic and cubic curvature invariants on manifolds with squashed cones. The results can be used to find the leading and universal terms of the holographic entanglement entropy to understand which solution corresponds to the actual minimal surface.
Recent work has shown that entanglement and the structure of spacetime are intimately related. One way to investigate this is to begin with an entanglement entropy in a conformal field theory (CFT) and use the AdS/CFT correspondence to calculate the bulk metric. We perform this calculation for ABJM, a particular 3-dimensional supersymmetric CFT (SCFT), in its ground state. In particular we are able to reconstruct the pure AdS4 metric from the holographic entanglement entropy of the boundary ABJM theory in its ground state. Moreover, we are able to predict the correct AdS radius purely from ent…
In many-body fermionic systems at finite density correlation functions of the density operator exhibit Friedel oscillations at a wavevector that is twice the Fermi momentum. We demonstrate the existence of such Friedel oscillations in a 3d gravity dual to a compressible finite-density state in a (1+1) dimensional field theory. The bulk dynamics is provided by a Maxwell U(1) gauge theory and all the charge is behind a bulk horizon. The bulk gauge theory is compact and so there exist magnetic monopole tunneling events. We compute the effect of these monopoles on holographic density-density corre…
Light-cone cuts have recently been proposed as a method to reconstruct the conformal metric of a holographic spacetime. We explore how additional information about the bulk geometry gets encoded in the structure of these light-cone cuts. In particular, we study how the hyperbolic angle related to a cusp in the light-cone cut encodes information about the matter content of the spacetime. We provide an explicit numerical example reconstructing the metric for a 4- dimensional spacetime composed by the superposition of a boson star and a gas of radiation in AdS.
In this paper, the two reconstruction methods, light-cone cuts method and hole-ography, are combined to provide complete bulk metrics of locally AdS$_3$ static spacetimes. As examples, our method is applied to the geometries of pure AdS$_3$, AdS$_3$ soliton, and BTZ black hole, and we see them successfully reconstructed. The light-cone cuts method is known to have difficulty in obtaining conformal factors, while the hole-ography in describing temporal components. Combining the two methods, we overcome the disadvantages and give complete metrics for a class of holographic theories such that ent…
We propose a measure of holographic information based on a causal wedge construction. The motivation behind this comes from an attempt to understand how boundary field theories can holographically reconstruct spacetime. We argue that given the knowledge of the reduced density matrix in a spatial region of the boundary, one should be able to reconstruct at least the corresponding bulk causal wedge. In attempt to quantify the `amount of information' contained in a given spatial region in field theory, we consider a particular bulk surface (specifically a co-dimension two surface in the bulk spac…
While most of the singularities of General Relativity are expected to be safely hidden behind event horizons by the cosmic censorship conjecture, we happen to live in the causal future of the classical big bang singularity, whose resolution constitutes the active field of early universe cosmology. Could the big bang be also hidden behind a causal horizon, making us immune to the decadent impacts of a naked singularity? We describe a braneworld description of cosmology with both 4d induced and 5d bulk gravity (otherwise known as Dvali-Gabadadze-Porati, or DGP model), which exhibits this feature…
