We study renormalization group flow in a non-local version of quantum electrodynamics (QED). We determine the regime in which the theory flows to a local theory in the infrared and study a possible UV completion of four-dimensional QED. In addition, we find that there exist non-local conformal theories with a one-dimensional conformal manifold and non-local deformations of QED in three dimensions that are exactly marginal. Along the way we develop methods for coupling non-local derivatives to external sources and discuss unitarity and conformal vs. scale invariance of these theories.
The paper proposes an algorithm for regularization of the self-energy expressions for a Dirac particle that meets the relativistic and gauge invariance requirements.
It has been conjectured in the literature that renormalizability of the $θ$-expanded noncommutative gauge theories improves when one takes into account full nonuniqueness of the Seiberg-Witten expansion, which relates noncommutative (`high-energy') with commutative (`low-energy') fields. In order to check this conjecture we analyze renormalizability of the noncommutative chiral electrodynamics: we quantize the action which contains all possible terms implied by the SW map. After renormalization we arrive at a different theory in which the relation between the coupling constants is changed. Thi…
It has been demonstrated that the effective potential V(ϕ) in a massless O(N) λϕ^4_4 model is determined completely by the renormalization group functions provided the renormalization condition \frac{d^4V}{d ϕ^4}|_{ϕ=μ}=λis used. This is shown to also hold in massless scalar electrodynamics. By employing a variant of the method of characteristics, the sums contributing to the leading-log, next-to-leading-log etc. contributions to V(ϕ) can be evaluated.
We show that the general Lorentz- and CPT-violating extension of quantum electrodynamics is one-loop renormalizable. The one-loop Lorentz-violating beta functions are obtained, and the running of the coefficients for Lorentz and CPT violation is determined. Some implications for theory and experiment are discussed.
The effective equations of motion for a point charged particle taking account of radiation reaction are considered in various space-time dimensions. The divergencies steaming from the pointness of the particle are studied and the effective renormalization procedure is proposed encompassing uniformly the cases of all even dimensions. It is shown that in any dimension the classical electrodynamics is a renormalizable theory if not multiplicatively beyond d=4. For the cases of three and six dimensions the covariant analogs of the Lorentz-Dirac equation are explicitly derived.
Two-loop $β$-function and anomalous dimension are calculated for N=1 supersymmetric quantum electrodynamics, regularized by higher derivatives in the minimal subtraction scheme. The result for two-loop contribution to the $β$-function appears to be equal to 0, does not depend on the form of regularizing term and does not lead to anomaly puzzle. Two-loop anomalous dimension can be also made independent on parameters of higher derivative regularization by a special choice of subtraction scheme.
The role of the conformal group in electrodynamics in four space-time dimensions is re-examined. As a pedagogic example we use the application of conformal transformations to find the electromagnetic field for a charged particle moving with a constant relativistic acceleration from the Coulomb electric field for the particle at rest. We also re-consider the reformulation of Maxwell's equations on the projective cone, which is isomorphic to a conformal compactification on Minkowski space, so that conformal transformations, belonging to the group O(4,2), are realised linearly. The resulting equa…
We formulate quantum electrodynamics on the basis of gauge (or BRST) covariant diffusion equations of fields. This is a particular example of the gradient flow exact renormalization group (GFERG). The resulting Wilson action fulfills a simple gauge Ward--Takahashi identity. We solve the GFERG equation around the Gaussian fixed point to the second order in gauge coupling and obtain the 1-loop beta function and anomalous dimensions. The anomalous dimension of the electron field coincides with that of the fermion field diffused by a gauge covariant flow equation of Lüscher.
Recently Bandos, Lechner, Sorokin, and Townsend [arXiv:2007.09092] have discovered that Maxwell's electrodynamics can be generalized so that the resulting nonlinear theory preserves both conformal invariance and SO(2) duality-rotation invariance. Their result can be derived in a simpler way.
In 1999, A. Connes and D. Kreimer have discovered the Hopf algebra structure on the Feynman graphs of scalar field theory. They have found that the renormalization can be interpreted as a solving of some Riemann -- Hilbert problem. In this work a generalization of their scheme to the case of quantum electrodynamics is proposed. The action of the gauge group on the Hopf algebra of diagrams are defined and the proof that this action is consistent with the Hopf algebra structure is given.
The paper determines the anomalous magnetic moment and Lamb energy level shift in the second order of the perturbation theory using the algorithm of self-energy expression regularization in quantum electrodynamics that meets the relativistic and gauge invariance requirements; the comparison is made to the associated conventional quantum electrodynamics results. A limiting 4-impulse with an infinitely large temporal component and limited value of spatial components that depend quite weakly on the Dirac particle impulse variation is introduced within the algorithm. The answer in regard to the ag…
We examine the nonperturbative structure of the radiatively induced Chern-Simons term in a Lorentz- and CPT-violating modification of QED. Although the coefficient of the induced Chern-Simons term is in general undetermined, the nonperturbative theory appears to generate a definite value. However, the CPT-even radiative corrections in this same formulation of the theory generally break gauge invariance. We show that gauge invariance may yet be preserved through the use of a Pauli-Villars regulator, and, contrary to earlier expectations, this regulator does not necessarily give rise to a vanish…
Starting from a formal Hamiltonian as found in the physics literature -- omitting photons -- we define a renormalized Hamiltonian through charge and mass renormalization. We show that the restriction to the one-electron subspace is well-defined. Our construction is non-perturbative and does not use a cut-off. The Hamiltonian is relevant for the description of the Lamb shift in muonic atoms.
In this work, we employ algebraic renormalization technique to show the renormalizability to all orders in perturbation theory of the Lorentz and CPT violating QED. Essentially, we control the breaking terms by using a suitable set of external sources. Thus, with the symmetries restored, a perturbative treatment can be consistently employed. After showing the renormalizability, the external sources attain certain physical values, which allow the recovering of the starting physical action. The main result is that the original QED action presents the three usual independent renormalization param…
$ $In this paper we present a systematic treatment for fundamental renormalization of quantum electrodynamics in real space. Although the standard renormalization is an old school problem in this case, it has not yet been completely done in position space. The most important difference with well-known differential renormalization is that we do the whole procedure in coordinate space without need to transformation to momentum space. Specially, we directly derive the conterterms in real space. This problem becomes important when the translational symmetry of the system breaks somehow explicitly …
We study the quantum properties of a Galilean-invariant abelian gauge theory coupled to a Schrödinger scalar in 2+1 dimensions. At the classical level, the theory with minimal coupling is obtained from a null-reduction of relativistic Maxwell theory coupled to a complex scalar field in 3+1 dimensions and is closely related to the Galilean electromagnetism of Le-Bellac and Lévy-Leblond. Due to the presence of a dimensionless, gauge-invariant scalar field in the Galilean multiplet of the gauge-field, we find that at the quantum level an infinite number of couplings is generated. We explain how t…
We study the renormalization flow of axion electrodynamics, concentrating on the non-perturbative running of the axion-photon coupling and the mass of the axion (like) particle. Due to a non-renormalization property of the axion-photon vertex, the renormalization flow is controlled by photon and axion anomalous dimensions. As a consequence, momentum-independent axion self-interactions are not induced by photon fluctuations. The non-perturbative flow towards the ultraviolet exhibits a Landau-pole-type behavior, implying that the system has a scale of maximum UV extension and that the renormaliz…
We comment on a recent puzzle regarding renormalization group invariance of exact results in SUSY theories, and argue that a purported renormalization of the dynamical scale Λdoes not in fact occur.
A new representation of Lagrangians of 4D nonlinear electrodynamics is considered. In this new formulation, in parallel with the standard Maxwell field strength F, an auxiliary bispinor (tensor) field V is introduced. The gauge field strength appears only in bilinear terms of the full Lagrangian, while the interaction Lagrangian E depends on the auxiliary fields, E = E(V). Two types of self-duality inherent in the nonlinear electrodynamics models admit a simple characterization in terms of the function E. The continuous SO(2) duality symmetry between nonlinear equations of motion and Bianchi i…
In this letter, we investigate the deformation of the ModMax theory, as a unique Lagrangian of non-linear electrodynamics preserving both conformal and electromagnetic-duality invariance, under $T\bar{T}$-like flows. We will show that the deformed theory is the generalized non-linear Born-Infeld electrodynamics. Being inspired by the invariance under the flow equation for Born-Infeld theories, we propose another $T\bar{T}$-like operator generating the ModMax and generalized Born-Infeld non-linear electrodynamic theories from the usual Maxwell and Born-Infeld theories, respectively.
Three-dimensional quantum electrodynamics exhibits a number of interesting properties, such as dynamical chiral symmetry breaking, weak confinement, and non-Fermi liquid behavior, and also has wide applications in condensed matter physics. We study the effects of random potentials, which exist in almost all realistic condensed-matter systems, on the low-energy behaviors of massless Dirac fermions by means of renormalization group method, and show that the role of random mass is significantly enhanced by the gauge interaction, whereas random scalar and vector potentials are insusceptible to the…
We investigate the renormalization group flow of the Yukawa model with a fixed momentum cutoff at the leading order in 1/N, where N is the number of the fermion species. We demonstrate the scale invariance of coupling constants of the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model.
We construct a gravity dual for scale invariant but non-conformal field theories with a cyclic renormalization group flow. A slight modification of our construction gives a gravity dual of discretely scale invariant field theories. The underlying gravitational theory breaks the null energy condition.

The dilation invariance is studied in the framework of Epstein-Glaser approach to renormalization theory. Some analogues of the Callan-Symanzik equations are found and they are applied to the scalar field theory and to Yang-Mills models. We find the interesting result that, if all the fields of the theory have zero masses, then from purely cohomological consideration, one can obtain the anomalous terms of logarithmic type.

We formulate a renormalized running coupling expansion for the $β$--function and the potential of the renormalized $ϕ^4$--trajectory on four dimensional Euclidean space-time. Renormalization invariance is used as a first principle. No reference is made to bare quantities. The expansion is proved to be finite to all orders of perturbation theory. The proof includes a large momentum bound on the connected free propagator amputated vertices.
Differential regularization is used to investigate the one-loop quantum corrections to Chern-Simons-Maxwell spinor and scalar electrodynamics. We illustrate the techniques to write the loop amplitudes in coordinate space. The short-distance expansion method is developed to perform the Fourier transformation of the amplitudes into momentum space and the possible renormalization ambiguity in Chern-Simons type gauge theories in terms of differential regularization is discussed. We also stress that the surface terms appearing in the differential regularization should be kept along for finite theor…
We consider a higher-derivative extension of QED modified by the addition of a gauge-invariant dimension-6 kinetic operator in the U(1) gauge sector. The Feynman diagrams at one-loop level are then computed. The modification in the spin-1 sector leads the electron self-energy and vertex corrections diagrams finite in the ultraviolet regime. Indeed, no regularization prescription is used to calculate these diagrams because the modified propagator always occurs coupled to conserved currents. Moreover, besides the usual massless pole in the spin-1 sector, there is the emergence of a massive one, …
A model of nonlinear electrodynamics with the Lagrangian density ${\cal L} = -(1/β)\arcsin(βF_{μν}F^{μν}/4)$ is proposed. The scale invariance and the dual invariance of electromagnetic fields are broken in the model. In the limit $β\rightarrow 0$ one comes to Maxwell's electrodynamics and the scale and dual invariances are recovered. We investigate the effect of coupling electromagnetic fields with the gravitational field. The asymptotic black hole solution is found which is similar to the Reissner-Nordström solution. We obtain corrections to Coulomb's law and to the Reissner-Nordström soluti…
We consider the quantum loop effects in scalar electrodynamics on de Sitter space by making use of the functional renormalization group approach. We first integrate out the photon field, which can be done exactly to leading (zeroth) order in the gradients of the scalar field, thereby making this method suitable for investigating the dynamics of the infrared sector of the theory. Assuming that the scalar remains light we then apply the functional renormalization group methods to the resulting effective scalar theory and focus on investigating the effective potential, which is the leading order …
We study the gauge invariance of physical observables in holographic theories under the local diffeomorphism. We find that gauge invariance is intimately related to the holographic renormalisation: the local counter terms defined in the boundary cancel most of gauge dependences of the on-shell action as well as the divergences. There is a mismatch in the degrees of freedom between the bulk theory and the boundary one. We resolve this problem by noticing that there is a residual gauge symmetry(RGS). By extending the RGS such that it satisfies infalling boundary condition at the horizon, we can …
This paper aims to consider the general properties of the non-linear solutions to the vacuum equations of Extended Electrodynamics. The *-invariance and the conformal invariance of the equations are mentioned. It is also proved that all non-linear solutions have zero invariants: F_{μν}F^{μν} = (*F)_{μν}F^{μν} = 0. The three invariant characteristics of the non-linear solutions: amplitude, phase and scale factor are introdiced and discussed.
We study the renormalization of the fermion mixing matrix in the Standard Model and derive the constraints that must be satisfied to respect gauge invariance to all orders. We demonstrate that the prescription based on the {\it on-shell} renormalization conditions is not consistent with the Ward-Takahashi Identities and leads to gauge dependent physical amplitudes. A simple scheme is proposed that satisfies all theoretical requirements and is very convenient for practical calculations.
The possibility to construct inflationary models for the renormalization-group improved potentials corresponding to scalar electrodynamics and to $SU(2)$ and $SU(5)$ models is investigated. In all cases, the tree-level potential, which corresponds to the cosmological constant in the Einstein frame, is seen to be non-suitable for inflation. Rather than adding the Hilbert-Einstein term to the action, quantum corrections to the potential, coming from to the RG-equation, are included. The inflationary scenario is analyzed with unstable de Sitter solutions which correspond to positive values of the…
We study three well known models of matter coupled to the ultraviolet cutoff, quantized radiation field and to the Coulomb potential of arbitrarily many nuclei. Two are nonrelativistic: the first uses the kinetic energy (p+eA(x))^2 and the second uses the Pauli-Fierz energy (p+eA(x))^2 +eσ\cdot B(x). The third, no-pair model, is relativistic and replaces the kinetic energy with the Dirac operator D(A), but restricted to its positive spectral subspace, which is the ``electron subspace''. In each case we are able to give an upper bound to the {\it binding} energy -- as distinct from the less dif…
The gradient flow exact renormalization group (GFERG) is a formulation of the exact renormalization group that keeps exact gauge invariance. GFERG can keep also modified chiral invariance. We will show that this formulation reproduces the correct axial anomaly in four dimensions.
In this work we use the framework of effective field theory to couple Einstein's gravity to scalar electrodynamics and determine the renormalization of the model through the study of physical processes below Planck scale, a realm where quantum mechanics and general relativity are perfectly compatible. We consider the effective field theory up to dimension six operators, corresponding to processes involving one graviton exchange. Studying the renormalization group functions we see that the beta function of the electric charge is positive and possesses no contribution coming from gravitational i…
The field theoretic renormalization study of reduced quantum electrodynamics (QED) is performed up to two loops. In the condensed matter context, reduced QED constitutes a very natural effective relativistic field theory describing (planar) Dirac liquids, e.g., graphene and graphene-like materials, the surface states of some topological insulators and possibly half-filled fractional quantum Hall systems. From the field theory point of view, the model involves an effective (reduced) gauge field propagating with a fractional power of the d'Alembertian in marked contrast with usual QEDs. The use …
Manifestly invariant renormalization scheme for supersymmetric gauge theories is proposed. This scheme is applied to supersymmetric quantum electrodynamics.
In this paper the nonperturbative analysis of the spectrum for one-particle excitations of the electron-positron field (EPF) is considered in the paper. A standard form of the quantum electrodynamics (QED) is used but the charge of the "bare" electron $e_0$ is supposed to be of a large value. It is shown that in this case the quasi-particle can be formed with a non-zero averaged value of the scalar component of the electromagnetic field (EMF). Self-consistent equations for the distribution of charge density in the "physical" electron (positron) are derived. A variational solution of these equa…
We consider matter fields conformally coupled to a background metric and dilaton and describe in detail a quantization procedure and related renormalization group flow that preserve Weyl invariance. Even though the resulting effective action is Weyl-invariant, the trace anomaly is still present, with all its physical consequences. We discuss first the case of free matter and then extend the result to interacting matter. We also consider the case when the metric and dilaton are dynamical and gravitons enter in the loops.
When using dimensional regularization, the bare couplings are expressed as a power series in (2 - n/2)^{-1} where n is the number of dimensions. It is shown how the renormalization group can be used to sum the leading pole, next to leading pole etc. contributions to these sums in scalar electrodynamics (or any theory with multiple couplings.)
The causal perturbation theory is an axiomatic perturbative theory of the S-matrix. This formalism has as its essence the following axioms: causality, Lorentz invariance and asymptotic conditions. Any other property must be showed via the inductive method order-by-order and, of course, it depends on the particular physical model. In this work we shall study the normalizability of the generalized quantum electrodynamics in the framework of the causal approach. Furthermore, we analyse the implication of the gauge invariance onto the model and obtain the respective Ward-Takahashi-Fradkin identiti…
We show that the renormalization group beta functions in the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model identically vanish in all order due to the compositeness condition. Accordingly the effective coupling constants are entirely fixed and do not run with the renormalization scale.
We give a prescription for N=1 supersymmetrization of any (four-dimensional) nonlinear electrodynamics theory with a Lagrangian density satisfying a convexity condition that we relate to semi-classical unitarity. We apply it to the one-parameter ModMax extension of Maxwell electrodynamics that preserves both electromagnetic duality and conformal invariance, and its Born-Infeld-like generalization, proving that duality invariance is preserved. We also establish superconformal invariance of the superModMax theory by showing that its coupling to supergravity is super-Weyl invariant. The higher-de…
In this work we report new results concerning the question of dynamical mass generation in the Lorentz and PCT violating quantum electrodynamics. A one loop calculation for the vacuum polarization tensor is presented. The electron propagator, "dressed" by a Lorentz breaking extra term in the fermion Lagrangian density, is approximated by its first order: this scheme is shown to break gauge invariance. Then we rather consider a full calculation to second order in the Lorentz breaking parameter: we recover gauge invariance and use the Schwinger-Dyson equation to discuss the full photon propagato…
Field-theoretical calculations performed in an approximation scheme often present a spurious dependence of physical quantities on some unphysical parameters associated with the details of the calculation setup (such as, the renormalization scheme or, in perturbation theory, the resummation procedure). In the present article, we propose to reduce this dependence by invoking conformal invariance. Using as a benchmark the three-dimensional Ising model, we show that, within the derivative expansion at order 4, performed in the nonperturbative renormalization group formalism, the identity associate…
We revisit the U(1) duality-invariant nonlinear models for N=1 and N=2 vector multiplets coupled to off-shell supergravities. For such theories we develop new formulations which make use of auxiliary chiral superfields (spinor in the N=1 case and scalar for N=2) and are characterized by the remarkable property that U(1) duality invariance is equivalent to the manifest U(1) invariance of the self-interaction. Our construction is inspired by the non-supersymmetric approach that was proposed by Ivanov and Zupnik a decade ago and recently re-discovered in the form of twisted self-duality.
