A key tool in the study of algebraic surfaces and their moduli is Brieskorn's simultaneous resolution for families of algebraic surfaces with simple (du Val or ADE) singularities. In this paper we show that a similar statement holds for families of curves with at worst simple (ADE) singularities. For a family $\mathscr X\to B$ of ADE curves, we give an explicit and natural resolution of the rational map $B\to \bar M_g$. Moreover, we discuss a lifting of this map to the moduli stack $ \bar {\mathcal M}_g$, i.e. a simultaneous semi-stable reduction for the family $\mathscr X/B$. In particular, we note that in contrast to what might be expected from the case of surfaces, the natural Weyl cover of $B$ is not a sufficient base change for a lifting of the map $B\to \bar M_g$ to $\bar {\mathcal M}_g$.
Given a complex projective surface with an ADE singularity and p_{g}=0, we construct ADE bundles over it and its minimal resolution. Furthermore, we descibe their minuscule representation bundles in terms of configurations of (reducible) (-1)-curves.
We give a classification of all Delsarte surfaces with only ADE singularities. Using this we give closed formulas for the Picard numbers of such surfaces.
We study symplectic resolutions of the Hilbert scheme of two points on a surface with one ADE-singularity. We also characterize such singularities by central fibers of their symplectic resolutions. As an application, we show that these singularities are isomorphic to the Slodowy slices which are transversal to the `sub-subregular' orbits in the nilpotent cones of ADE-types.
In this article we apply the results in the article "On Isolated Real Singularities I" to the study of real $ADE$-singularities. We show that said results enables us to find the homology groups of the Milnor fibres of real $ADE$-singularities of curves. As a corollary we show how to deduce the same for $ADE$-singularities in higher codimension, giving an almost complete answer in this case. This is followed by a discussion of the classification problem of simple real singularities.
Given a hypersurface, $X$, prime $p$, the zeta function is a generating function for the number of $\mathbb{F}_{p}$ rational points of $X$. Until now, there is no algorithm for computing hypersurfaces with ADE singularities. Scott Stetson and Vladimir Baranovsky provided an algorithm with Mathematica for the ordinary double point case. In this paper, I go over a Sage algorithm for computing the zeta function of a hypersurface with ADE singularities over 3-dimensional projective space. To make the algorithm more efficient, I established an equivalence between a polynomial belonging to the Jacob…
We study Ruan's \textit{cohomological crepant resolution conjecture} for orbifolds with transversal ADE singularities. In the $A_n$-case we compute both the Chen-Ruan cohomology ring $H^*_{\rm CR}([Y])$ and the quantum corrected cohomology ring $H^*(Z)(q_1,...,q_n)$. The former is achieved in general, the later up to some additional, technical assumptions. We construct an explicit isomorphism between $H^*_{\rm CR}([Y])$ and $H^*(Z)(-1)$ in the $A_1$-case, verifying Ruan's conjecture. In the $A_n$-case, the family $H^*(Z)(q_1,...,q_n)$ is not defined for $q_1=...=q_n=-1$. This implies that the …
We construct compact $G_2$-orbifolds with ADE-singularities that carry exactly one parallel spinor. Our examples are related to certain quotients of $\mathbb{C}^2\times T^3$ that have been investigated in arXiv:hep-th/9812205. We shortly discuss the physical applications of our examples.
We use F. Ferrari's methods relating matrix models to Calabi-Yau spaces in order to explain much of Intriligator and Wecht's ADE classification of $\N=1$ superconformal theories which arise as RG fixed points of $\N = 1$ SQCD theories with adjoints. We find that ADE superpotentials in the Intriligator-Wecht classification exactly match matrix model superpotentials obtained from Calabi-Yaus with corresponding ADE singularities. Moreover, in the additional $\Hat{O}, \Hat{A}, \Hat{D}$ and $\Hat{E}$ cases we find new singular geometries. These `hat' geometries are closely related to their ADE coun…
We study the elliptic genera of two-dimensional orbifold CFTs, where the orbifolding procedure introduces du Val surface singularities on the target space. The N=4 character decompositions of the elliptic genus contributions from the twisted sectors at the singularities obey a consistent scaling property, and contain information about the arrangement of exceptional rational curves in the resolution. We also discuss how these twisted sector elliptic genera are related to twining genera and Hodge elliptic genera for sigma models with K3 target space.
We study Ruan's "cohomological crepant resolution conjecture" (see math.AG/0108195) for orbifolds with transversal ADE singularities. Let [Y] be such an orbifold, Y its coarse moduli space and Z the crepant resolution of Y. Following Ruan [math.AG/0108195], we have a deformation of the cohomology ring H^*(Z) using some Gromov-Witten invariants of Z. The resulting family of rings will be denoted by H^*(Z)(q_1,...,q_n), where q_1,...,q_n are complex parameters. In the A_n case we compute both the orbifold cohomology ring H^*_{orb}([Y]) and the family H^*(Z)(q_1,...,q_n). The former is achieved i…
This paper is based on a talk at the conference `The McKay correspondence, mutation and related topics' from July 2020. We provide an introduction to joint work of the author with Søren Gammelgaard, Ádám Gyenge and Balázs Szendrői that constructs the reduced scheme underlying the Hilbert scheme of $n$ points on an ADE singularity as a Nakajima quiver variety for a particular stability parameter. After drawing a parallel with two well-known constructions of the Hilbert scheme of $n$ points in $\mathbb{A}^2$, we summarise results of the author and Gwyn Bellamy before describing the main result b…
We use F. Ferrari's methods relating matrix models to Calabi-Yau spaces in order to explain Intriligator and Wecht's ADE classification of $\N=1$ superconformal theories which arise as RG fixed points of $\N = 1$ SQCD theories with adjoints. The connection between matrix models and $\N = 1$ gauge theories can be seen as evidence for the Dijkgraaf--Vafa conjecture. We find that ADE superpotentials in the Intriligator--Wecht classification exactly match matrix model superpotentials obtained from Calabi-Yau's with corresponding ADE singularities. Moreover, in the additional $\Hat{O}, \Hat{A}, \Ha…
By the famous ADE classification rational double points are simple. Rational triple points are also simple. We conjecture that the simple normal surface singularities are exactly those rational singularities, whose resolution graph can be obtained from the graph of a rational double point or rational triple point by making (some) vertex weights more negative. For rational singularities we show one direction in general, and the other direction (simpleness) within the special classes of rational quadruple points and of sandwiched singularities.
In this continuation of [L-Y1] and [L-L-S-Y], we explain how the Azumaya structure on D-branes together with a netted categorical quotient construction produces the same resolution of ADE orbifold singularities as that arises as the vacuum manifold/variety of the supersymmetric quantum field theory on the D-brane probe world-volume, given by Douglas and Moore [D-M] under the string-theory contents and constructed earlier through hyper-Kähler quotients by Kronheimer and Nakajima. This is consistent with the moral behind this project that Azumaya-type structure on D-branes themselves -- stated a…
In this paper we present new proofs using real spectra of the finiteness theorem on Nash trivial simultaneous resolution and the finiteness theorem on Blow-Nash triviality for isolated real algebraic singularities. That is, we prove that a family of Nash sets in a Nash manifold indexed by a semialgebraic set always admits a Nash trivial simultaneous resolution after a partition of the parameter space into finitely many semialgebraic pieces and in the case of isolated singularities it admits a finite Blow-Nash trivialization. We also complement the finiteness results with recursive bounds.
We study the BPS invariants of the preferred Calabi-Yau resolution of ADE polyhedral singularities C^3/G given by Nakamura's G-Hilbert schemes. Genus 0 BPS invariants are defined by means of the moduli space of torsion sheaves as proposed by Sheldon Katz. We show that these invariants are equal to half the number of certain positive roots of an ADE root system associated to G. This is in agreement with the prediction via Gromov-Witten theory.
We investigate the triangle singularity $f=x^a+y^b+z^c$, or $S=k[x,y,z]/(f)$, attached to a weighted projective line $X$ given by the weight triple $(a,b,c)$. We investigate the stable category of vector bundles on $X$ obtained from the vector bundles by factoring out all line bundles. This category is triangulated and has Serre duality. It is, moreover, naturally equivalent to the stable category of graded maximal Cohen-Macaulay modules over $S$ (or matrix factorizations of $f$), and then by results of Buchweitz and Orlov to the graded singularity category of $f$. We show that this category i…
We prove a local theorem on simultaneous resolution of singularities, which is valid in all dimensions. This theorem is proven in dimension 2 (and in all characteristics) by Abhyankar in his book "Ramification theoretic methods in algebraic geometry".
We establish faithfulness of braid group actions generated by twists along an ADE configuration of $2$-spherical objects in a derived category. Our major tool is the Garside structure on braid groups of type ADE. This faithfulness result provides the missing ingredient in Bridgeland's description of a space of stability conditions associated to a Kleinian singularity.
We provide a definition of Vafa-Witten invariants for projective surface Deligne-Mumford stacks, generalizing the construction of Tanaka-Thomas on the Vafa-Witten invariants for projective surfaces inspired by the S-duality conjecture. We give calculations for a root stack over a general type quintic surface, and quintic surfaces with ADE singularities. The relationship between the Vafa-Witten invariants of quintic surfaces with ADE singularities and the Vafa-Witten invariants of their crepant resolutions is also discussed.
We compute the image of the Milnor lattice of an ADE singularity under a period map. We also prove that the Milnor latticecan be identified with an appropriate relative $K$-group defined through the Berglund-Hübsch dual of the corresponding singularity.
A finite subgroup of the conformal group SL(2,C) can be related to invariant polynomials on a hypersurface in C^3. The latter then carries a simple singularity, which resolves by a finite iteration of basic cycles of deprojections. The homological intersection graph of this cycles is the Dynkin graph of an ADE Lie group. The deformation of the simple singularity corresponds to ADE symmetry breaking. A 3+1-dimensional topological model of observation is constructed, transforming consistently under SL(2,C), as an evolving 3-dimensional system of world tubes, which connect ``possible points of ob…
In this paper, we study a class of toric ideals obtained by using some geometric data of ADE trees which are the minimal resolution graphs of rational surface singularities. We compute explicit Gröbner bases for these toric ideals that are also minimal generating sets consisting of large number of binomials of degree $\leq 4$. In particular, they give rise to squarefree initial ideals as well.
We give a precise formulation of the modularity principle for the log canonical models of $\bar{M}_g$. Assuming the modularity principle holds, we develop and compare two methods for determining the critical alpha-values at which a singularity or complete curve with G_m-action arises in the modular interpretations of log canonical models of $\bar{M}_g$. The first method involves a new invariant of curve singularities with G_m-action, constructed via the characters of the induced G_m-action on spaces of pluricanonical forms. The second method involves intersection theory on the variety of stabl…
We give a $δ$-constant criterion for equinormalizability of deformations of isolated (not necessarily reduced) curve singularities over smooth base spaces of dimension $\geq 1$. For one-parametric families of isolated curve singularities, we show that their topologically triviality is equivalent to the admission of weak simultaneous resolutions.
Let $\mathbb{K}$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero, and $V$ a hypersurface defined by an irreducible polynomial $f$ with coefficients in $\mathbb{K}$ . In this article we prove that an Embedded Deformation of $V$ which admits a Simultaneous Embedded Resolution induces, under certain mild conditions, a deformation of the reduced scheme associated to the space of $m$-jets $V_m$, $m\geq 0$. An example of an Embedded Deformation of $V$ which admits a Simultaneous Embedded Resolution is a $Γ(f)$-deformation of $V$, where $V$ has at most one isolated singularity, and $f$ is non…
We utilize the deformation theory of algebraic singularities to study charged matter in compactifications of M-theory, F-theory, and type IIa string theory on elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau manifolds. In F-theory, this description is more physical than that of resolution. We describe how two-cycles can be identified and systematically studied after deformation. For ADE singularities, we realize non-trivial ADE representations as sublattices of Z^N, where N is the multiplicity of the codimension one singularity before deformation. We give a method for the determination of Picard-Lefschetz vani…
We classify isolated hypersurface singularities $f\in K[[x_1,..., x_n]]$, $K$ an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p>0$, which are simple w.r.t. right equivalence, that is, which have no moduli up to analytic coordinate change. For $K=\mathbb R$ or $\mathbb C$ this classification was initiated by Arnol'd, resulting in the famous ADE-series. The classification w.r.t. contact equivalence for $p>0$ was done by Greuel and Kröning with a result similar to Arnol'd's. It is surprising that w.r.t. right equivalence and for any given $p>0$ we have only finitely many simple singularities, i.…
We construct Bridgeland stability conditions on the derived category of smooth quasi-projective Deligne-Mumford surfaces whose coarse moduli spaces have ADE singularities. This unifies the construction for smooth surfaces and Bridgeland's work on Kleinian singularities. The construction hinges on an orbifold version of the Bogomolov-Gieseker inequality for slope semistable sheaves on the stack, and makes use of the Toën-Hirzebruch-Riemann-Roch theorem.
Let Y be a normal projective variety and p a morphism from X to Y, which is a projective holomorphic symplectic resolution. Namikawa proved that the Kuranishi deformation spaces Def(X) and Def(Y) are both smooth, of the same dimension, and p induces a finite branched cover f from Def(X) to Def(Y). We prove that f is Galois. We proceed to calculate the Galois group G, when X is simply connected, and its holomorphic symplectic structure is unique, up to a scalar factor. The singularity of Y is generically of ADE-type, along every codimension 2 irreducible component B of the singular locus, by Na…
We construct closed arboreal Lagrangian skeleta associated to links of isolated plane curve singularities. This yields closed arboreal Lagrangian skeleta for Weinstein pairs and Weinstein 4-manifolds associated to max-tb Legendrian representatives of algebraic links. We provide computations of Legendrian and Weinstein invariants, and discuss the symplectic topological nature of the Fomin-Pylyavskyy-Shustin-Thurston cluster algebra associated to a singularity. Finally, we present a conjectural ADE-classification for Lagrangian fillings of certain Legendrian links and list some related problems.

The purpose, mainly expository and speculative, of this paper---an outgrowth of a survey lecture at the September 1997 Obergurgl working week---is to indicate some (not all) of the efforts that have been made to interpret equisingularity, and connections among them; and to suggest directions for further exploration. Zariski defined equisingularity on an n-dimensional hypersurface V via stratification by ``dimensionality type," an integer associated to a point by means of a generic local projection to affine n-space. A possibly more intuitive concept of equisingularity can be based on stratific…
For any non-degenerate, quasi-homogeneous hypersurface singularity, we describe a family of moduli spaces, a virtual cycle, and a corresponding cohomological field theory associated to the singularity. This theory is analogous to Gromov-Witten theory and generalizes the theory of r-spin curves, which corresponds to the simple singularity A_{r-1}. We also resolve two outstanding conjectures of Witten. The first conjecture is that ADE-singularities are self-dual; and the second conjecture is that the total potential functions of ADE-singularities satisfy corresponding ADE-integrable hierarchies.…
We build two embedded resolution procedures of a quasi-ordinary singularity of complex analytic hypersurface, by using toric morphisms which depend only on the characteristic monomials associated to a quasi-ordinary projection of the singularity. This result answers an open problem of Lipman in Equisingularity and simultaneous resolution of singularities, Resolution of Singularities, Progress in Mathematics No. 181, 2000, 485-503. In the first procedure the singularity is embedded as hypersurface. In the second procedure, which is inspired by a work of Goldin and Teissier for plane curves (see…
For a flat family of Du Val singularities, we can take a simultaneous resolution after finite base change. It is an interesting problem to consider this analogy for a flat family of higher dimensional canonical singularities. In this note, we consider an existence of simultaneous terminalization for K. Altmann's homogeneous toric deformation whose central fibre is an affine Gorenstein toric singularity. We obtain examples that there are no simultaneous terminalization even after finite base change and give a sufficient condition for an existence of simultaneous terminalization. Some examples o…
In this paper we construct noncommutative resolutions of a certain class of Calabi-Yau threefolds studied by F. Cachazo, S. Katz and C. Vafa. The threefolds under consideration are fibered over a complex plane with the fibers being deformed Kleinian singularities. The construction is in terms of a noncommutative algebra introduced by V. Ginzburg, which we call the "N=1 ADE quiver algebra".
Using Lipman's results on resolution of two-dimensional singularities, we provide a form of resolution of singularities in codimension two for reduced quasi-excellent schemes. We deduce that operations of degree less than two on algebraic cycles are characterised by their values on classes of regular schemes. We provide several applications of this "detection principle", when the base is an arbitrary regular excellent scheme: integrality of the Chern character in codimension less than three, existence of weak forms of the second and third Steenrod squares, Adem relation for the first Steenrod …
A cusp singularity is a surface singularity whose minimal resolution is a cycle of smooth rational curves meeting transversely. Cusp singularities come in naturally dual pairs. Looijenga proved in 1981 that if a cusp singularity is smoothable, the minimal resolution of the dual cusp is the anticanonical divisor of some smooth rational surface. In 1983, the second author and Miranda gave a criterion for smoothability of a cusp singularity, in terms of the existence of a K-trivial semistable model for the central fiber of such a smoothing. We study these "Type III degenerations" of rational surf…
This paper studies the concept of algorithmic equiresolution of a family of embedded varieties or ideals, which means a simultaneous resolution of such a family compatible with a given (suitable) algorithm of resolution in characteristic zero. The paper's approach is more indirect: it primarily considers the more general case of families of basic objects (or marked ideals). A definition of algorithmic equiresolution is proposed, which applies to families whose parameter space T may be non-reduced, e.g., the spectrum of a suitable artinian ring. Other definitions of algorithmic equiresolution a…
This paper uses noncommutative resolutions of non-Gorenstein singularities to construct classical deformation spaces, by recovering the Artin component of the deformation space of a cyclic surface singularity using only the quiver of the corresponding reconstruction algebra. The relations of the reconstruction algebra are then deformed, and the deformed relations together with variation of the GIT quotient achieve the simultaneous resolution. This extends work of Brieskorn, Kronheimer, Grothendieck, Cassens-Slodowy and Crawley-Boevey-Holland into the setting of singularities $\mathbb{C}^2/H$ w…
A total mass is the weighted count of continuous homomorphisms from the absolute Galois group of a local field to a finite group. In the preceding paper, the authors observed that in a particular example, two total masses coming from two different weightings are dual to each other. We discuss the problem how general such a duality holds and relate it to the existence of simultaneous resolution of singularities, using the wild McKay correspondence and the Poincaré duality for stringy invariants. We also exhibit several examples.
An algorithm for resolution of singularities in characteristic zero is described. It is expressed in terms of multi-ideals, that essentially are defined as a finite sequence of pairs, each one consiting of a sheaf of ideals and a positive integer. This approach is particularly simple and, as indicated by some results shown here, it seems suitable for applications to a good theory of simultaneous algorithmic resolution of singularities, specially for families parametrized by the spectrum of an artinian ring.
Let S be a split family of del Pezzo surfaces over a discrete valuation ring such that the general fiber is smooth and the special fiber has ADE-singularities. Let G be the reductive group given by the root system of these singularities. We construct a G-torsor over S whose restriction to the generic fiber is the extension of structure group of the universal torsor. This extends a construction of Friedman and Morgan for individual singular del Pezzo surfaces. In case of very good residue characteristic, this torsor is unique and infinitesimally rigid.
Let G be a polyhedral group, namely a finite subgroup of SO(3). Nakamura's G-Hilbert scheme provides a preferred Calabi-Yau resolution Y of the polyhedral singularity C^3/G. The classical McKay correspondence describes the classical geometry of Y in terms of the representation theory of G. In this paper we describe the quantum geometry of Y in terms of R, an ADE root system associated to G. Namely, we give an explicit formula for the Gromov-Witten partition function of Y as a product over the positive roots of R. In terms of counts of BPS states (Gopakumar-Vafa invariants), our result can be s…
We consider families of parameterizations of reduced curve singularities over a Noetherian base scheme and prove that the delta invariant is semicontinuous. In our setting, each curve singularity in the family is the image of a parameterization and not the fiber of a morphism. The problem came up in connection with the right-left classification of parameterizations of curve singularities defined over a field of positive characteristic. We prove a bound for right-left determinacy of a parameterization in terms of delta and the semicontinuity theorem provides a simultaneous bound for the determi…
