Let G be a polyhedral group, namely a finite subgroup of SO(3). Nakamura's G-Hilbert scheme provides a preferred Calabi-Yau resolution Y of the polyhedral singularity C^3/G. The classical McKay correspondence describes the classical geometry of Y in terms of the representation theory of G. In this paper we describe the quantum geometry of Y in terms of R, an ADE root system associated to G. Namely, we give an explicit formula for the Gromov-Witten partition function of Y as a product over the positive roots of R. In terms of counts of BPS states (Gopakumar-Vafa invariants), our result can be stated as a correspondence: each positive root of R corresponds to one half of a genus zero BPS state. As an application, we use the crepant resolution conjecture to provide a full prediction for the orbifold Gromov-Witten invariants of [C^3/G].
We prove the quantum McKay correspondence formulae conjectured by J. Bryan and A. Gholampour for the type D (binary) polyhedral groups in SU(2) and SO(3). We use the method of induction by the WDVV equation and from the normal subgroups by J. Bryan and A. Gholampour, and the polynomiality technique developed in this article. We are also based on the validity of the corresponding conjecture for type A groups, which is proved by T. Coates, A. Corti, H. Iritani, and H.-H. Tseng.
The quotient singularities of dimensions two and three obtained from polyhedral groups and the corresponding binary polyhedral groups admit natural resolutions of singularities as Hilbert schemes of regular orbits whose exceptional fibres over the origin reveal similar properties. We construct a morphism between these two resolutions, contracting exactly the excess part of the exceptional fibre. This construction is motivated by the study of some pencils of K3-surfaces arising as minimal resolutions of quotients of nodal surfaces with high symmetries.
A Calabi-Yau orbifold is locally modeled on C^n/G where G is a finite subgroup of SL(n, C). In dimension n=3 a crepant resolution is given by Nakamura's G-Hilbert scheme. This crepant resolution has a description as a GIT/symplectic quotient. We use tools from global analysis to give a geometrical generalization of the McKay Correspondence to this case.
The present work is devoted to the study of motivic integration on quotient singularities. We give a new proof of a form of the McKay correspondence previously proved by Batyrev. The paper contains also some general results on motivic integration on arbitrary singular spaces.
The boundary chiral ring of a 2d gauged linear sigma model on a Kähler manifold $X$ classifies the topological D-brane sectors and the massless open strings between them. While it is determined at small volume by simple group theory, its continuation to generic volume provides highly non-trivial information about the $D$-branes on $X$, related to the derived category $D^\flat(X)$. We use this correspondence to elaborate on an extended notion of McKay correspondence that captures more general than orbifold singularities. As an illustration, we work out this new notion of McKay correspondence fo…
We consider the quotients $X = V/G$ of a symplectic complex vector space $V$ by a finite subgroup $G \subset Sp(V)$ which admit a smooth crepant resolution $Y \to X$. For such quotients, we prove the homological McKay correspondence conjectured by M. Reid. Namely, we construct a natural basis in the homology space $H_\cdot(Y,\Q)$ whose elements are numbered by the conjugacy classes in the finite group $G$.
We give a conceptual proof that the Poincaré series of the coordinate algebra of a Kleinian singularity and of a Fuchsian singularity of genus 0 is the quotient of the characteristic polynomials of two Coxeter elements. These Coxeter elements are interpreted geometrically, using triangulated categories and spherical twist functors.
There are many generalizations of the McKay correspondence for higher dimensional Gorenstein quotient singularities and there are some applications to compute the topological invariants today. But some of the invariants are completely different from the classical invariants, in particular for non-Gorenstein cases. In this paper, we would like to discuss the McKay correspondence for 2-dimensional quotient singularities via "special" representations which gives the classical topological invariants and give a new characterization of the special representations for cyclic quotient singularities in…
We define the singular orbifold elliptic genus and $E$-function for all normal surfaces without strictly log-canonical singularities, and prove the analogue of the McKay correspondence in this setting. Our invariants generalize the stringy invariants defined by Willem Veys for this class of singularities. We show that the ability to define these invariants is closely linked to rigidity phenomena associated to the elliptic genus.
Let $V$ be a finite-dimensional symplectic vector space over a field of characteristic 0, and let $G \subset Sp(V)$ be a finite subgroup. We prove that for any crepant resolution $X \to V/G$, the bounded derived category $D^b(Coh(X))$ of coherent sheaves on $X$ is equivalent to the bounded derived category $D^b_G(Coh(V))$ of $G$-equivariant coherent sheaves on $V$.
We study the BPS invariants of the preferred Calabi-Yau resolution of ADE polyhedral singularities C^3/G given by Nakamura's G-Hilbert schemes. Genus 0 BPS invariants are defined by means of the moduli space of torsion sheaves as proposed by Sheldon Katz. We show that these invariants are equal to half the number of certain positive roots of an ADE root system associated to G. This is in agreement with the prediction via Gromov-Witten theory.
We formulate a Crepant Resolution Correspondence for open Gromov-Witten invariants (OCRC) of toric Calabi-Yau orbifolds by viewing the open theories as sections of Givental's symplectic vector space and the correspondence as a linear map of Givental spaces which identifies them. We deduce a Bryan-Graber-type statement for disk invariants and extend it to arbitrary genus zero topologies in the Hard Lefschetz case. Upon leveraging Iritani's theory of integral structures to equivariant quantum cohomology, we conjecture a general form of the symplectomorphism entering the OCRC which arises from a …
In this paper we study weight homology of singular schemes. Weight homology is an invariant of a singular scheme defined in terms of hypercoverings of resolution of singularities. Our main result is McKay principle for weight homology of quotient singularities, i.e. we describe weight homology of a quotient scheme in terms of weight homology of an equivariant scheme. Our method is to reduce the geometric McKay principle for weight homology to Kato's cohomological Hasse principle for arithmetic schemes. The McKay principle for weight homology implies McKay principle for the homotopy type of the…
We prove the generalised McKay correspondence for isolated singularities using Floer theory. Given an isolated singularity \C^n/G for a finite subgroup G in SL(n,\C) and any crepant resolution Y, we prove that the rank of positive symplectic cohomology SH_+(Y) is the number of conjugacy classes of G, and that twice the age grading on conjugacy classes is the \Z-grading on SH_+(Y) by the Conley-Zehnder index. The generalised McKay correspondence follows as SH_+(Y) is naturally isomorphic to ordinary cohomology H(Y), due to a vanishing result for full symplectic cohomology. In the Appendix we co…
Let $G$ be a finite subgroup of $\mbox{GL}(2)$ acting on $\mathbf{A}^2\setminus\{0\}$ freely. The $G$-orbit Hilbert scheme $G\mbox{-Hilb}(\mathbf{A}^2)$ is a minimal resolution of the quotient $\mathbf{A}^2/G$. We determine the generator sheaf of the ideal defining the universal $G$-cluster over $G\mbox{-Hilb}(\mathbf{A}^2)$, which somewhat strengthens the well-known McKay correspondence for a finite subgroup of $\mbox{SL}(2)$. We also study the quiver structure of $G\mbox{-Hilb}(\mathbf{A}^2)$ at every $G$-cluster $O_{Z_y}=O_{\mathbf{A}^2}/I_y$ in terms of a collection of sort of minimal $G$-…
A finite subgroup of ${\rm SL}_2(\CC)$ defines a (Kleinian) rational surface singularity. The McKay correspondence yields a relation between the Poincaré series of the algebra of invariants of such a group and the characteristic polynomials of certain Coxeter elements determined by the corresponding singularity. Here we consider some non-abelian finite subgroups $G$ of ${\rm SL}_3(\CC)$. They define non-isolated three-dimensional Gorenstein quotient singularities. We consider suitable hyperplane sections of such singularities which are Kleinian or Fuchsian surface singularities. We show that w…
The quotient of a finite-dimensional vector space by the action of a finite subgroup of automorphisms is usually a singular variety. Under appropriate assumptions, the McKay correspondence relates the geometry of nice resolutions of singularities and the representations of the group. For the Hilbert scheme of points on the affine plane, we study how different correspondences (McKay, dual McKay and multiplicative McKay) are related to each other.
We revisit the construction of elliptic class given by Borisov and Libgober for singular algebraic varieties. Assuming torus action we adjust the theory to equivariant local situation. We study theta function identities having geometric origin. In the case of quotient singularities $\mathbb C^n/G$, where $G$ is a finite group the theta identities arise from McKay correspondence. The symplectic singularities are of special interest. The Du Val surface singularity $A_n$ leads to a remarkable formula.
The wild McKay correspondence, a variant of the McKay correspondence in positive characteristics, shows that stringy motives of quotient varieties equal some motivic integrals on the moduli space of of the Galois covers of a formal disk. In this paper, we determine when the integrals converge for the the case of cyclic groups of prime power order. As an application, we give a criterion for the quotient variety being canonical or log canonical.
This is a write-up of my talk at the Conference on algebraic structures in Montreal, July 2003. I try to give a brief informal introduction to the proof of Y. Ruan's conjecture on orbifold cohomology multiplication for symplectic quotient singularities given in V. Ginzburg and D. Kaledin, math.AG/0212279. Version 2: minor changes, added some references.
We give some necessary conditions for the existence of a symplectic resolution for quotient singularities. The McKay correspondence is also worked out for these resolutions.
The condensation of closed string tachyons localized at the fixed point of a C^d/Γorbifold can be studied in the framework of renormalization group flow in a gauged linear sigma model. The evolution of the Higgs branch along the flow describes a resolution of singularities via the process of tachyon condensation. The study of the fate of D-branes in this process has lead to a notion of a ``quantum McKay correspondence.'' This is a hypothetical correspondence between fractional branes in an orbifold singularity in the ultraviolet with the Coulomb and Higgs branch branes in the infrared. In this…
We establish a correspondence between orbifold and singular elliptic genera of a global quotient. While the former is defined in terms of the fixed point set of the action, the latter is defined in terms of the resolution of singularities. As a byproduct, the second quantization formula of Dijkgraaf, Moore, Verlinde and Verlinde is extended to arbitrary Kawamata log-terminal pairs.
Let $Γ$ be a finite group acting linearly on $\C^n$, freely outside the origin. In previous work a generalisation of Kronheimer's construction of moduli of Hermitian-Yang-Mills bundles with certain invariance properties was given. This produced varieties $X_ζ$ (parameterised by $ζ\in\Q^N$) which are partial resolutions of $\C^n/Γ$. In this article, it is shown the same $X_ζ$ can be described as moduli spaces of representations of the McKay quiver associated to the action of $Γ$. It it shown that, for abelian groups, $X_ζ$ are toric varieties defined by convex polyhedra which are the solution s…
We survey some features of equivariant instanton partition functions of topological gauge theories on four and six dimensional toric Kahler varieties, and their geometric and algebraic counterparts in the enumerative problem of counting holomorphic curves. We discuss the relations of instanton counting to representations of affine Lie algebras in the four-dimensional case, and to Donaldson-Thomas theory for ideal sheaves on Calabi-Yau threefolds. For resolutions of toric singularities, an algebraic structure induced by a quiver determines the instanton moduli space through the McKay correspond…
For a finite subgroup $Γ\subset \mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{C})$ and $n\geq 1$, we construct the (reduced scheme underlying the) Hilbert scheme of $n$ points on the Kleinian singularity $\mathbb{C}^2/Γ$ as a Nakajima quiver variety for the framed McKay quiver of $Γ$, taken at a specific non-generic stability parameter. We deduce that this Hilbert scheme is irreducible (a result previously due to Zheng), normal, and admits a unique symplectic resolution. More generally, we introduce a class of algebras obtained from the preprojective algebra of the framed McKay quiver by a process called cornering, a…
We globalize the derived version of the McKay correspondence of Bridgeland-King-Reid, proven by Kawamata in the case of abelian quotient singularities, to certain log algebraic stacks with locally free log structure. The two sides of the correspondence are given respectively by the infinite root stack and by a certain version of the valuativization (the projective limit of every possible log blow-up). Our results imply, in particular, that in good cases the category of coherent parabolic sheaves with rational weights is invariant under log blow-up, up to Morita equivalence.
When the quotient of a symplectic vector space by the action of a finite subgroup of symplectic automorphisms admits as a crepant projective resolution of singularities the Hilbert scheme of regular orbits of Nakamura, then there is a natural isomorphism between the Grothendieck group of this resolution and the representation ring of the group, given by the Bridgeland-King-Reid map. However, this isomorphism is not compatible with the ring structures. For the Hilbert scheme of points on the affine plane, we study the multiplicative behavior of this map.
We advocate that a generalized Kronheimer construction of the Kähler quotient crepant resolution $\mathcal{M}_ζ\longrightarrow \mathbb{C}^3/Γ$ of an orbifold singularity where $Γ\subset \mathrm{SU(3)}$ is a finite subgroup naturally defines the field content and interaction structure of a superconformal Chern-Simons Gauge Theory. This is supposedly the dual of an M2-brane solution of $D=11$ supergravity with $\mathbb{C}\times\mathcal{M}_ζ$ as transverse space. We illustrate and discuss many aspects of this of constructions emphasizing that the equation $\pmb{p}\wedge\pmb{p}=0$ which provides t…
Canonical orders, introduced in the minimal model program for orders, are simultaneous generalisations of Kleinian singularities and their associated skew group rings. In this paper, we construct minimal resolutions of canonical orders via non-commutative cyclic covers and skew group rings. This allows us to exhibit a derived equivalence between minimal resolutions of canonical orders and the skew group ring form of the canonical order in all but one case. The Fourier-Mukai transform used to construct this equivalence allows us to make explicit, the numerical version of the McKay correspondenc…
This paper is based on a talk at the conference `The McKay correspondence, mutation and related topics' from July 2020. We provide an introduction to joint work of the author with Søren Gammelgaard, Ádám Gyenge and Balázs Szendrői that constructs the reduced scheme underlying the Hilbert scheme of $n$ points on an ADE singularity as a Nakajima quiver variety for a particular stability parameter. After drawing a parallel with two well-known constructions of the Hilbert scheme of $n$ points in $\mathbb{A}^2$, we summarise results of the author and Gwyn Bellamy before describing the main result b…
Let $G$ be a polyhedral group $G\subset SO(3)$ of types $\mathbb{Z}/n\mathbb{Z}$, $D_{2n}$ and $\mathbb{T}$. We prove that there exists a one-to-one correspondence between flops of $G$-Hilb$\mathbb{C}^3$ and mutations of the McKay quiver with potential which do not mutate the trivial vertex. This correspondence provides two equivalent methods to construct every projective crepant resolution for the singularities $\mathbb{C}^3/G$, which are constructed as moduli spaces $\mathcal{M}_C$ of quivers with potential for some chamber $C$ in the space $Θ$ of stability conditions. In addition, we study …

A K3-surface is a (smooth) surface which is simply connected and has trivial canonical bundle. In these notes we investigate three particular pencils of K3-surfaces with maximal Picard number. More precisely the general member in each pencil has Picard number 19 and each pencil contains four surfaces with Picard number 20. These surfaces are obtained as the minimal resolution of quotients X/G, where $G\subset SO(4,\R)$ is some finite subgroup and $X\subset ¶_3(\C)$ denotes a G-invariant surface. The singularities of X/G come from fix points of G on X or from singularities of X. In any case the…
We state a version of the crepant resolution conjecture for total ancestor potentials for surface singularities, and reduce the conjecture to the quantum McKay correspondence conjecture of J.Bryan and A.Gholampour and a vanishing conjecture for Hurwitz-Hodge integrals. In particular, for singularities of type A, we prove the conjecture. We also suggest an approach towards a proof for the general cases by Teleman's reconstruction theorem for semisimple cohomological field theories.
Let X/G be a 3-dimensional Calabi-Yau orbifold with codimension 2 singularities. The topology of crepant resolutions of X/G is described by the McKay correspondence (Reid, Ito). We study Calabi-Yau 3-folds Y that arise by deforming the complex structure of X/G. The McKay correspondence does not hold for such Y. We describe the topology of Y using the `Weyl group' of the singular set of X/G. Even in simple examples, this can give many different ways to desingularize X/G. It would be interesting to interpret these results in String Theory, which should lead to a generalization of the idea of orb…
Given an irreducible hypersurface singularity of dimension $d$ (defined by a polynomial $f\in K[[ {\bf x} ]][z]$) and the projection to the affine space defined by $K[[ {\bf x} ]]$, we construct an invariant which detects whether the singularity is quasi-ordinary with respect to the projection. The construction uses a weighted version of Hironaka's characteristic polyhedron and successive embeddings of the singularity in affine spaces of higher dimensions. When $ f $ is quasi-ordinary, our invariant determines the semigroup of the singularity and hence it encodes the embedded topology of the s…
This is the final draft, containing very minor proof-reading corrections. Let G in SL(n,\C) be a finite subgroup and \fie: Y -> X = \C^n/G any resolution of singularities of the quotient space. We prove that crepant exceptional prime divisors of Y correspond one-to-one with ``junior'' conjugacy classes of G. When n = 2 this is a version of the McKay correspondence (with irreducible representations of G replaced by conjugacy classes). In the case n = 3, a resolution with K_Y = 0 is known to exist by work of Roan and others; we prove the existence of a basis of H^*(Y, \Q) by algebraic cycles in …
A total mass is the weighted count of continuous homomorphisms from the absolute Galois group of a local field to a finite group. In the preceding paper, the authors observed that in a particular example, two total masses coming from two different weightings are dual to each other. We discuss the problem how general such a duality holds and relate it to the existence of simultaneous resolution of singularities, using the wild McKay correspondence and the Poincaré duality for stringy invariants. We also exhibit several examples.
An immediate generalization of the classical McKay correspondence for Gorenstein quotient spaces $\Bbb{C}^{r}/G$ in dimensions $r\geq 4$ would primarily demand the existence of projective, crepant, full desingularizations. Since this is not always possible, it is natural to ask about special classes of such quotient spaces which would satisfy the above property. In this paper we give explicit necessary and sufficient conditions under which 2-parameter series of Gorenstein cyclic quotient singularities have torus-equivariant resolutions of this specific sort in all dimensions.
In this article, we study the fundamental groups of low-dimensional log canonical singularities, i.e., log canonical singularities of dimension at most $4$. In dimension $2$, we show that the fundamental group of an lc singularity is a finite extension of a solvable group of length at most $2$. In dimension $3$, we show that every surface group appears as the fundamental group of a $3$-fold log canonical singularity. In contrast, we show that for $r\geq 2$ the free group $F_r$ is not the fundamental group of a $3$-dimensional lc singularity. In dimension $4$, we show that the fundamental group…
Let G be a finite subgroup of GL_n(C). A study is made of the ways in which resolutions of the quotient space C^n / G can parametrise G-constellations, that is, G-regular finite length sheaves. These generalise G-clusters, which are used in the McKay correspondence to construct resolutions of orbifold singularities. A complete classification theorem is achieved, in which all the natural families of G-constellations are shown to correspond to certain finite sets of G-Weil divisors, which are a special sort of rational Weil divisor, introduced in this paper. Moreover, it is shown that the number…
For Gorenstein quotient spaces $C^d/G$, a direct generalization of the classical McKay correspondence in dimensions $d\geq 4$ would primarily demand the existence of projective, crepant desingularizations. Since this turned out to be not always possible, Reid asked about special classes of such quotient spaces which would satisfy the above property. We prove that the underlying spaces of all Gorenstein abelian quotient singularities, which are embeddable as complete intersections of hypersurfaces in an affine space, have torus-equivariant projective crepant resolutions in all dimensions. We us…
In this writing we shall address certain beautiful inter-relations between the construction of 4-dimensional supersymmetric gauge theories and resolution of algebraic singularities, from the perspective of String Theory. We review in some detail the requisite background in both the mathematics, such as orbifolds, symplectic quotients and quiver representations, as well as the physics, such as gauged linear sigma models, geometrical engineering, Hanany-Witten setups and D-brane probes. We investigate aspects of world-volume gauge dynamics using D-brane resolutions of various Calabi-Yau singular…
By associating a `motivic integral' to every complex projective variety X with at worst canonical, Gorenstein singularities, Kontsevich proved that, when there exists a crepant resolution of singularities Y of X, the Hodge numbers of Y do not depend upon the choice of the resolution. In this article we provide an elementary introduction to the theory of motivic integration, leading to a proof of the result described above. We calculate the motivic integral of several quotient singularities and discuss these calculations in the context of the cohomological McKay correspondence.
A T-variety is an algebraic variety X with an effective regular action of an algebraic torus T. Altmann and Hausen gave a combinatorial description of an affine T-variety X by means of polyhedral divisors. In this paper we compute the higher direct images of the structure sheaf of a desingularization of X in terms of this combinatorial data. As a consequence, we give a criterion as to when a T-variety has rational singularities. We also provide a partial criterion for a T-variety to be Cohen-Macaulay. As an application we characterize in this terms quasihomogeneous elliptic singularities of su…
Given a polyhedral cone sigma with smooth two-dimensional faces and, moreover, a lattice point R in the dual cone of sigma, we describe the part of the versal deformation of the associated toric variety TV(sigma) that is built from the deformation parameters of multidegree R. Let Q the polyhedron obtained by intersecting sigma with the hyperplane R=1. Then the base space is (the germ of) an affine scheme that reflects certain possibilities of splitting Q into Minkowski summands.
