We develop an intrinsic geometrical setting for higher order constrained field theories. As a main tool we use an appropriate generalization of the classical Skinner-Rusk formalism. Some examples of application are studied, in particular, applications to the geometrical description of optimal control theory for partial differential equations.
We present a geometric interpretation of the integration-by-parts formula on an arbitrary vector bundle. As an application we give a new geometric formulation of higher-order variational calculus.
The equations for the critical points of the action functional defined by a Lagrangian depending on higher-order derivatives of admissible curves on a Lie algebroid are found. The relation with Euler-Poincaré and Lagrange Poincaré type equations is studied. Reduction and reconstruction results for such systems are established.
We introduce a stochastic fractional calculus. As an application, we present a stochastic fractional calculus of variations, which generalizes the fractional calculus of variations to stochastic processes. A stochastic fractional Euler-Lagrange equation is obtained, extending those available in the literature for the classical, fractional, and stochastic calculus of variations. To illustrate our main theoretical result, we discuss two examples: one derived from quantum mechanics, the second validated by an adequate numerical simulation.
We connect the well-known theory of functional forms of variational bicomplex with the theory of antiexact differential forms. We identify antiexact functional forms as an obstruction to the variationality of differential equations. The most prominent result of this observation is the formulation of the variational problem for some differential equations that are not variational and neither have a variational multiplier. Heat, Navier-Stokes, and KdV equations illustrate this new variational principle.
A geometric setup for constrained variational calculus is presented. The analysis deals with the study of the extremals of an action functional defined on piecewise differentiable curves, subject to differentiable, non-holonomic constraints. Special attention is paid to the tensorial aspects of the theory. As far as the kinematical foundations are concerned, a fully covariant scheme is developed through the introduction of the concept of infinitesimal control. The standard classification of the extremals into normal and abnormal ones is discussed, pointing out the existence of an algebraic alg…
Invariant conditions for conformable fractional problems of the calculus of variations under the presence of external forces in the dynamics are studied. Depending on the type of transformations considered, different necessary conditions of invariance are obtained. As particular cases, we prove fractional versions of Noether's symmetry theorem. Invariant conditions for fractional optimal control problems, using the Hamiltonian formalism, are also investigated. As an example of potential application in Physics, we show that with conformable derivatives it is possible to formulate an Action Prin…
We approach uncertainty principles of Cowling-Price-Heis-\\enberg-type as a variational principle on modulation spaces. In our discussion we are naturally led to compact localization operators with symbols in modulation spaces. The optimal constant in these uncertainty principles is the smallest eigenvalue of the inverse of a compact localization operator. The Euler-Lagrange equations for the associated functional provide equations for the eigenfunctions of the smallest eigenvalue of these compact localization operators. As a by-product of our proofs we derive a generalization to mixed-norm sp…
We consider the three dimensional Vlasov-Poisson system that is equipped with an external magnetic field to describe a plasma. The aim of various concrete applications is to control a plasma in a desired fashion. This can be modeled by an optimal control problem. For that reason the basics for calculus of variations will be introduced in this paper. We have to find a suitable class of fields that are admissible for this procedure as they provide unique global solutions of the Vlasov-Poisson system. Then we can define a field-state operator that maps any admissible field onto its corresponding …
New third- and fourth-order Lagrangian hierarchies are derived in this paper. The free coefficients in the leading terms satisfy the most general differential geometric criteria currently known for the existence of a variational formulation, as derived by solution of the full inverse problem of the Calculus of Variations for scalar sixth- and eighth-order ordinary differential equations (ODEs). The Lagrangians obtained here have greater freedom since they require conditions only on individual coefficients. In particular, they contain four arbitrary functions, so that some investigations based …
We introduce variational problems on Riemannian manifolds with constrained acceleration and derive necessary conditions for normal extremals in the constrained variational problem. The problem consists on minimizing a higher-order energy functional, among a set of admissible curves defined by a constraint on the covariant acceleration. In addition, we use this framework to address the elastic splines problem with obstacle avoidance in the presence of this type of contraints.
The paper is devoted to an analysis of optimality conditions for nonsmooth multidimensional problems of the calculus of variations with various types of constraints, such as additional constraints at the boundary and isoperimetric constraints. To derive optimality conditions, we study generalised concepts of differentiability of nonsmooth functions called codifferentiability and quasidifferentiability. Under some natural and easily verifiable assumptions we prove that a nonsmooth integral functional defined on the Sobolev space is continuously codifferentiable and compute its codifferential an…
We develop a geometric version of the inverse problem of the calculus of variations for discrete mechanics and constrained discrete mechanics. The geometric approach consists of using suitable Lagrangian and isotropic submanifolds. We also provide a transition between the discrete and the continuous problems and propose variationality as an interesting geometric property to take into account in the design and computer simulation of numerical integrators.
The aim of this work is to study, from an intrinsic and geometric point of view, second-order constrained variational problems on Lie algebroids, that is, optimization problems defined by a cost functional which depends on higher-order derivatives of admissible curves on a Lie algebroid. Extending the classical Skinner and Rusk formalism for the mechanics in the context of Lie algebroids, for second-order constrained mechanical systems, we derive the corresponding dynamical equations. We find a symplectic Lie subalgebroid where, under some mild regularity conditions, the second-order constrain…
Several ultra-compact accurate wave functions in the form of generalized Hylleraas-Kinoshita functions and Guevara-Harris-Turbiner functions, which describe the domain of applicability of the Quantum Mechanics of Coulomb Charges (QMCC), or, equivalently, the Non-Relativistic QED (NRQED), for the ground state energies (4-5 significant digits (s.d.)) of He-like and Li-like iso-electronic sequences in the static approximation with point-like, infinitely heavy nuclei are constructed. It is shown that for both sequences the obtained parameters can be fitted in $Z$ by simple smooth functions: in gen…
