We show that if there exists a Lipschitz homeomorphism $T$ between the nets in the Banach spaces $C(X)$ and $C(Y)$ of continuous real valued functions on compact spaces $X$ and $Y$, then the spaces $X$ and $Y$ are homeomorphic provided $l(T) \times l(T^{-1})< 6/5$. By $l(T)$ and $l(T^{-1})$ we denote the Lipschitz constants of the maps $T$ and $T^{-1}$. This improves the classical result of Jarosz and the recent result of Dutrieux and Kalton where the constant obtained is 17/16. We also estimate the distance of the map $T$ from the isometry of the spaces $C(X)$ and $C(Y)$.
One important class of tools in the study of the connections between algebraic and topological structures are the "Banach-Stone type theorems", which describe algebraic isomorphisms of algebras (or groups, lattices, etc.) of functions in terms of homeomorphisms between the underlying topological spaces. Several such theorems have been proven throughout the last century, however not all of them are comparable, and in particular no single one is the strongest. In this article, we describe a general framework which encompasses several of these results, and which allows for new applications relate…
We show that under a certain topological assumption on two compact hereditary families $\F$ and $\G$ on some infinite cardinal $κ$, the corresponding combinatorial spaces $X_\F$ and $X_\G$ are isometric if and only if there is a permutation of $κ$ inducing a homeomorphism between $\F$ and $\G$. We also prove that two different regular families $\F$ and $\G$ on $ω$ cannot be permuted one to the other. Both these results strengthen the main result of \cite{BrechFerencziTcaciuc}.
Let $X$ and $Y$ be compact Hausdorff spaces, and $E$, $F$ be Banach lattices. Let $C(X,E)$ denote the Banach lattice of all continuous $E$-valued functions on $X$ equipped with the pointwise ordering and the sup norm. We prove that if there exists a Riesz isomorphism $\mathnormalΦ: C(X,E)\to C(Y,F)$ such that $\mathnormalΦf$ is non-vanishing on $Y$ if and only if $f$ is non-vanishing on $X$, then $X$ is homeomorphic to $Y$, and $E$ is Riesz isomorphic to $F$. In this case, $\mathnormalΦ$ can be written as a weighted composition operator: $\mathnormalΦ f(y)=\mathnormalΠ(y)(f(φ(y)))$, where $φ$ …
Let $X$ and $Y$ be completely regular spaces and $E$ and $F$ be Hausdorff topological vector spaces. We call a linear map $T$ from a subspace of $C(X,E)$ into $C(Y,F)$ a \emph{Banach-Stone map} if it has the form $Tf(y) = S_{y}(f(h(y))$ for a family of linear operators $S_{y} : E \to F$, $y \in Y$, and a function $h: Y \to X$. In this paper, we consider maps having the property: \cap^{k}_{i=1}Z(f_{i}) \neq\emptyset\iff\cap^{k}_{i=1}Z(Tf_{i}) \neq \emptyset, where $Z(f) = \{f = 0\}$. We characterize linear bijections with property (Z) between spaces of continuous functions, respectively, spaces…
We show how the mathematical structure of large-deviation principles matches well with the concept of coarse-graining. For those systems with a large-deviation principle, this may lead to a general approach to coarse-graining through the variational form of the large-deviation functional.
We give a quantitative result about asymptotic moduli of Banach spaces under coarse quotient maps. More precisely, we prove that if a Banach space $Y$ is a coarse quotient of a subset of a Banach space $X$, where the coarse quotient map is coarse Lipschitz, then the ($β$)-modulus of $X$ is bounded by the modulus of asymptotic uniform smoothness of $Y$ up to some constants. In particular, if the coarse quotient map is a coarse homeomorphism, then the modulus of asymptotic uniform convexity of $X$ is bounded by the modulus of asymptotic uniform smoothness of $Y$ up to some constants.
In this note, we extend to the setting of quasi-reflexive spaces a classical result of N. Kalton and L. Randrianarivony on the coarse Lipschitz structure of reflexive and asymptotically uniformly smooth Banach spaces. As an application, we show for instance, that for $1\le q<p$, a $q$-asymptotically uniformly convex Banach space does not coarse Lipschitz embed into a $p$-asymptotically uniformly smooth quasi-reflexive Banach space. This extends a recent result of B.M. Braga.
We study how well a quasi-Banach space can be coarsely embedded into a Hilbert space. Given any quasi-Banach space X which coarsely embeds into a Hilbert space, we compute its Hilbert space compression exponent. We also show that the Hilbert space compression exponent of X is equal to the supremum of the amounts of snowflakings of X which admit a bi-Lipschitz embedding into a Hilbert space.
In this paper, we study the coarse Lipschitz geometry of Banach spaces with several asymptotic properties. Specifically, we look at asymptotically uniformly smoothness and convexity, and several distinct Banach-Saks-like properties. Among other results, we characterize the Banach spaces which are either coarsely or uniformly homeomorphic to $T^{p_1}\oplus \ldots \oplus T^{p_n}$, where each $T^{p_j}$ denotes the $p_j$-convexification of the Tsirelson space, for $p_1,\ldots,p_n\in (1,\ldots, \infty)$, and $2\not\in\{p_1,\ldots ,p_n\}$. We obtain applications to the coarse Lipschitz geometry of t…
For a space $X$ denote by $C_b(X)$ the Banach algebra of all continuous bounded scalar-valued functions on $X$ and denote by $C_0(X)$ the set of all elements in $C_b(X)$ which vanish at infinity. We prove that certain Banach subalgebras $H$ of $C_b(X)$ are isometrically isomorphic to $C_0(Y)$, for some unique (up to homeomorphism) locally compact Hausdorff space $Y$. The space $Y$ is explicitly constructed as a subspace of the Stone--Čech compactification of $X$. The known construction of $Y$ enables us to examine certain properties of either $H$ or $Y$ and derive results not expected to be de…
A wide new class of subsets of a Banach space $X$ named coarse $p$-limited sets ($ 1\leq p < \infty$) is introduced by considering weak* $p$-summable sequences in $X'$ instead of weak* null sequences. We study its basic properties and compare it with the class of compact and weakly compact sets. Results concerning the relationship of coarse $p$-limited sets with operators are obtained.
In these notes, we study the relation between uniform and coarse embeddings between Banach spaces. In order to understand this relation better, we also look at the problem of when a coarse embedding can be assumed to be topological. Among other results, we show that if a Banach space $X$ uniformly embeds into a minimal Banach space $Y$, then $X$ simultaneously coarsely and uniformly embeds into $Y$, and if a Banach space $X$ coarsely embeds into a minimal Banach space $Y$, then $X$ simultaneously coarsely and homeomorphically embeds into $Y$ by a map with uniformly continuous inverse.
We study the structure of the space of coarse Lipschitz maps between Banach spaces. In particular we introduce the notion of norm attaining coarse Lipschitz maps. We extend to the case of norm attaining coarse Lipschitz equivalences, a result of G. Godefroy on Lipschitz equivalences. This leads us to include the non separable versions of classical results on the stability of the existence of asymptotically uniformly smooth norms under Lipschitz or coarse Lipschitz equivalences.
Krivine and Maurey proved in 1981 that every stable Banach space contains almost isometric copies of $\ell_p$, for some $p\in[1,\infty)$. In 1983, Raynaud showed that if a Banach space uniformly embeds into a superstable Banach space, then $X$ must contain an isomorphic copy of $\ell_p$, for some $p\in[1,\infty)$. In these notes, we show that if a Banach space coarsely embeds into a superstable Banach space, then $X$ has a spreading model isomorphic to $\ell_p$, for some $p\in[1,\infty)$. In particular, we obtain that there exist reflexive Banach spaces which do not coarsely embed into any sup…
We give a direct proof of the fact that a quasi-Banach space coarsely embeds into a Hilbert space if and only if it uniformly embeds into a Hilbert space.
In this paper, we study the coarse embedding into Banach space. We proved that under certain conditions, the property of embedding into Banach space can be preserved under taking the union the metric spaces. For a group $G$ strongly relative hyperbolic to a subgroup $H$, we proved that if $H$ admits a coarse embedding into a uniformly convex Banach space, so is $B(n)=\{g\in G|\abs{g}_{S\cup\mathscr{H}}\leq n\}$.
In this paper we show that a countable, residually amenable group admits a proper isometric affine action on some uniformly convex Banach space if and only if one (or equivalently, all) of its box families admits a fibred cofinitely-coarse embedding into some uniformly convex Banach space.
M. Talagrand showed that, for the Cech-Stone compactification βω of the space of natural numbers, the norm and the weak topology generate different Borel structures in the Banach space C(βω). We prove that the Borel structures in C(βω) generated by the weak and the pointwise topology are also different. We also show that in C(ω*), where ω*=βω- ω, there is no countable family of pointwise Borel sets separating functions from C(ω*).
We prove a commutative Gelfand--Naimark type theorem, by showing that the set $C_s(X)$ of continuous bounded (real or complex valued) functions with separable support on a locally separable metrizable space $X$ (provided with the supremum norm) is a Banach algebra, isometrically isomorphic to $C_0(Y)$, for some unique (up to homeomorphism) locally compact Hausdorff space $Y$. The space $Y$, which we explicitly construct as a subspace of the Stone--Čech compactification of $X$, is countably compact, and if $X$ is non-separable, is moreover non-normal; in addition $C_0(Y)=C_{00}(Y)$. When the un…
In these notes, we study nonlinear embeddings between Banach spaces which are also weakly sequentially continuous. In particular, our main result implies that if a Banach space $X$ coarsely (resp. uniformly) embeds into a Banach space $Y$ by a weakly sequentially continuous map, then every spreading model $(e_n)_n$ of a normalized weakly null sequence in $X$ satisfies \[\|e_1+\ldots+e_k\|_{\overlineδ_Y}\lesssim\|e_1+\ldots+e_k\|_S,\] where $\overlineδ_Y$ is the modulus of asymptotic uniform convexity of $Y$. Among other results, we obtain Banach spaces $X$ and $Y$ so that $X$ coarsely (resp. u…
We prove that the class of reflexive asymptotic-$c_0$ Banach spaces is coarsely rigid, meaning that if a Banach space $X$ coarsely embeds into a reflexive asymptotic-$c_0$ space $Y$, then $X$ is also reflexive and asymptotic-$c_0$. In order to achieve this result we provide a purely metric characterization of this class of Banach spaces. This metric characterization takes the form of a concentration inequality for Lipschitz maps on the Hamming graphs, which is rigid under coarse embeddings. Using an example of a quasi-reflexive asymptotic-$c_0$ space, we show that this concentration inequality…
If $X$ is an almost transitive Banach space with amenable isometry group (for example, if $X=L^p([0,1])$ with $1\leqslant p<\infty$) and $X$ admits a uniformly continuous map $X\oversetϕ\longrightarrow E$ into a Banach space $E$ satisfying $$\inf_{\|x-y\|=r} \| ϕ(x)-ϕ(y)\|>0 $$ for some $r>0$, then $X$ admits a simultaneously uniform and coarse embedding into a Banach space $V$ that is finitely representable in $L^2(E)$.
Given a Boolean algebra $A$, we construct another Boolean algebra $B$ with no uncountable well-ordered chains such that the Banach space of real valued continuous functions $C(K_A)$ embeds isometrically into $C(K_B)$, where $K_A$ and $K_B$ are the Stone spaces of $A$ and $B$ respectively. As a consequence we obtain the following: If there exists an isometrically universal Banach space for the class of Banach spaces of a given uncountable density $κ$, then there is another such space which is induced by a Boolean algebra which is not universal for Boolean algebras of cardinality $κ$. Such a phe…
We prove a very general theorem concerning the estimation of the expression $\|T(\frac{a+b}{2}) - \frac{Ta+Tb}{2}\|$ for different kinds of maps $T$ satisfying some general perurbated isometry condition. It can be seen as a quantitative generalization of the classical Mazur-Ulam theorem. The estimates improve the existing ones for bi-Lipschitz maps. As a consequence we also obtain a very simple proof of the result of Gevirtz which answers the Hyers-Ulam problem and we prove a non-linear generalization of the Banach-Stone theorem which improves the results of Jarosz and more recent results of D…
In this paper, we study nonlinear embeddings between Banach spaces. More specifically, the goal of this paper is to study weaker versions of coarse and uniform embeddability, and to provide suggestive evidences that those weaker embeddings may be stronger than one would think. We do such by proving that many known results for coarse and uniform embeddings remain valid for those weaker notions of embeddings.
The main result of this article is a rigidity result pertaining to the spreading model structure for Banach spaces coarsely embeddable into Tsirelson's original space $T^*$. Every Banach space that is coarsely embeddable into $T^*$ must be reflexive and all its spreading models must be isomorphic to $c_0$. Several important consequences follow from our rigidity result. We obtain a coarse version of an influential theorem of Tsirelson: $T^*$ does not coarsely contain $c_0$ nor $\ell_p$ for $p\in[1,\infty)$. We show that there is no infinite dimensional Banach space that coarsely embeds into eve…
We examine several classical concepts from topology and functional analysis, using methods of commutative algebra. We show that these various concepts are all controlled by BC R-rings and their maximal spectra. A BC R-ring is a ring A that is isomorphic to the ring of bounded continuous R-valued functions on some compact topological space X. These rings are not topologized. We prove that the category of BC R-rings is dual to the category of compact topological spaces. Next we prove that for every topological space X the ring of bounded continuous functions on it is a BC R-ring. These theorems …
In the present paper we investigate the class of compact trees, endowed with the coarse wedge topology, in the area of non-separable Banach spaces. We describe Valdivia compact trees in terms of inner structures and we characterize the space of continuous functions on them. We prove that all compact trees have the property $(M)$. Finally we prove that the space of continuous functions on an arbitrary tree with height less than $ω_1\cdotω_0$ is Plichko.
We study uniform and coarse embeddings between Banach spaces and topological groups. A particular focus is put on equivariant embeddings, i.e., continuous cocycles associated to continuous affine isometric actions of topological groups on separable Banach spaces with varying geometry.
We deal with isomorphic Banach-Stone type theorems for closed subspaces of vector-valued continuous functions. Let $\mathbb{F}=\mathbb{R}$ or $\mathbb{C}$. For $i=1,2$, let $E_i$ be a reflexive Banach space over $\mathbb{F}$ with a certain parameter $λ(E_i)>1$, which in the real case coincides with the Schaffer constant of $E_i$, let $K_i$ be a locally compact (Hausdorff) topological space and let $\mathcal{H}_i$ be a closed subspace of $\mathcal{C}_0(K_i, E_i)$ such that each point of the Choquet boundary $\mathcal{Ch}_{\mathcal{H}_i} K_i$ of $\mathcal{H}_i$ is a weak peak point. We show that…
We introduce the notion of asymptotic coarse Lipschitz equivalence of metric spaces. We show that it is strictly weaker than coarse Lipschitz equivalence. We study its impact on the asymptotic dimension of metric spaces. Then we focus on Banach spaces. We prove that, for $2\leq p<\infty$, being linearly isomorphic to $\ell_p$ is stable under asymptotic coarse Lipschitz equivalences. Finally, we establish a version of the Gorelik principle in this setting and apply it to prove the stability of various properties of asymptotic uniform smoothness of Banach spaces under asymptotic coarse Lipschitz…
In this paper, we report on new results related to the existence of an adjoint for operators on separable Banach spaces and discuss a few interesting applications. (Some results are new even for Hilbert spaces.) Our first two applications provide an extension of the Poincaré inequality and the Stone-von Neumann version of the spectral theorem for a large class of $C_0$-generators of contraction semigroups on separable Banach spaces. Our third application provides a natural extension of the Schatten-class of operators to all separable Banach spaces. As a part of this program, we introduce a new…
These notes concern the nonlinear geometry of Banach spaces, asymptotic uniform smoothness and several Banach-Saks-like properties. We study the existence of certain concentration inequalities in asymptotically uniformly smooth Banach spaces as well as weakly sequentially continuous coarse (Lipschitz) embeddings into those spaces. Some results concerning the descriptive set theoretical complexity of those properties are also obtained. We finish the paper with a list of open problem.
A convex-polynomial is a convex combination of the monomials $\{1, x, x^2, \ldots\}$. This paper establishes that the convex-polynomials on $\mathbb R$ are dense in $L^p(μ)$ and weak$^*$ dense in $L^\infty(μ)$, precisely when $μ([-1,\infty)) = 0$. It is shown that the convex-polynomials are dense in $C(K)$ precisely when $K \cap [-1, \infty) = \emptyset$, where $K$ is a compact subset of the real line. Moreover, the closure of the convex-polynomials on $[-1,b]$ are shown to be the functions that have a convex-power series representation. A continuous linear operator $T$ on a locally convex spa…
This paper presents Stieltjes-type integration for operator-valued functions with respect to spectral families. The relation between Riemann-Stieltjes integrals associated with some classes of spectral families including, in particular, those that arise in the context of the Stone representation theorem for Banach spaces is established. The developed approach is applied to the structural analysis of the operators commuting with a one-parameter representation satisfying the Generalized Stone theorem.
According to the fundamental work of Yu.V. Prokhorov, the general theory of stochastic processes can be regarded as the theory of probability measures in complete separable metric spaces. Since stochastic processes depending upon a continuous parameter are basically probability measures on certain subspaces of the space of all functions of a real variable, a particularly important case of this theory is when the underlying metric space has a linear structure. Prokhorov also provided a concrete metrisation of the topology of weak convergence today known as the L{é}vy-Prokhorov distance. Motivat…
The main purpose of the paper is to prove the following results: Let $A$ be a locally finite metric space whose finite subsets admit uniformly bilipschitz embeddings into a Banach space $X$. Then $A$ admits a bilipschitz embedding into $X$. Let $A$ be a locally finite metric space whose finite subsets admit uniformly coarse embeddings into a Banach space $X$. Then $A$ admits a coarse embedding into $X$. These results generalize previously known results of the same type due to Brown-Guentner (2005), Baudier (2007), Baudier-Lancien (2008), and the author (2006, 2009). One of the main steps in th…
Given $\u$ a multiplicative sequence of polynomial ideals, we consider the associated algebra of holomorphic functions of bounded type, $H_{b\u}(E)$. We prove that, under very natural conditions verified by many usual classes of polynomials, the spectrum $M_{b\u}(E)$ of this algebra "behaves" like the classical case of $M_{b}(E)$ (the spectrum of $H_b(E)$, the algebra of bounded type holomorphic functions). More precisely, we prove that $M_{b\u}(E)$ can be endowed with a structure of Riemann domain over $E"$ and that the extension of each $f\in H_{b\u}(E)$ to the spectrum is an $\u$-holomorphi…
We generalize the concept of coarse hypercyclicity, introduced by Feldman in \cite{Fe1}, to that of coarse topological transitivity on open cones. We show that a bounded linear operator acting on an infinite dimensional Banach space with a coarsely dense orbit on an open cone is hypercyclic and a coarsely topologically transitive (mixing) operator on an open cone is topologically transitive (mixing resp.). We also "localize" these concepts by introducing two new classes of operators called coarsely $J$-class and coarsely $D$-class operators and we establish some results that may make these cla…
In 1994, Jan Pelant proved that a metric property related to the notion of paracompactness called the uniform Stone property characterizes a metric space's uniform embeddability into $c_0(κ)$ for some cardinality $κ$. In this paper it is shown that coarse Lipschitz embeddability of a metric space into $c_0(κ)$ can be characterized in a similar manner. It is also shown that coarse, uniform, and bi-Lipschitz embeddability into $c_0(κ)$ are equivalent notions for normed linear spaces.
We study the nonlinear embeddability of Banach spaces and the equi-embeddability of the family of Kalton's interlaced graphs $([\mathbb N]^k,d_{\mathbb K})_k$ into dual spaces. Notably, we define and study a modification of Kalton's property $\mathcal Q$ that we call property $\mathcal{Q}_p$ (with $p \in (1,+\infty]$). We show that if $([\mathbb N]^k,d_{\mathbb K})_k$ equi-coarse Lipschitzly embeds into $X^*$, then the Szlenk index of $X$ is greater than $ω$, and that this is optimal, i.e., there exists a separable dual space $Y^*$ that contains $([\mathbb N]^k,d_{\mathbb K})_k$ equi-Lipschitz…
It is known that the expanders arising as increasing sequences of level sets of warped cones, as introduced by the second-named author, do not coarsely embed into a Banach space as soon as the corresponding warped cone does not coarsely embed into this Banach space. Combining this with non-embeddability results for warped cones by Nowak and Sawicki, which relate the non-embeddability of a warped cone to a spectral gap property of the underlying action, we provide new examples of expanders that do not coarsely embed into any Banach space with nontrivial type. Moreover, we prove that these expan…
In this note, we show that the spectral theorem, has two representations; the Stone-von Neumann representation and one based on the polar decomposition of linear operators, which we call the deformed representation. The deformed representation has the advantage that it provides an easy extension to all closed densely defined linear operators on Hilbert space. Furthermore, the deformed representation can also be extended all separable reflexive Banach spaces and has a limited extension to non-reflexive Banach spaces.
