We develop a space-time large-deviation point of view on Gibbs-non-Gibbs transitions in spin systems subject to a stochastic spin-flip dynamics. Using the general theory for large deviations of functionals of Markov processes outlined in Feng and Kurtz [11], we show that the trajectory under the spin-flip dynamics of the empirical measure of the spins in a large block in Z^d satisfies a large deviation principle in the limit as the block size tends to infinity. The associated rate function can be computed as the action functional of a Lagrangian that is the Legendre transform of a certain non-linear generator, playing a role analogous to the moment-generating function in the Gartner-Ellis theorem of large deviation theory when this is applied to finite-dimensional Markov processes. This rate function is used to define the notion of "bad empirical measures", which are the discontinuity points of the optimal trajectories (i.e., the trajectories minimizing the rate function) given the empirical measure at the end of the trajectory. The dynamical Gibbs-non-Gibbs transitions are linked to the occurrence of bad empirical measures: for short times no bad empirical measures occur, while for intermediate and large times bad empirical mea- sures are possible. A future research program is proposed to classify the various possible scenarios behind this crossover, which we refer to as a "nature-versus-nurture" transition.
We give new and explicitly computable examples of Gibbs-non-Gibbs transitions of mean-field type, using the large deviation approach introduced in [4]. These examples include Brownian motion with small variance and related diffusion processes, such as the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process, as well as birth and death processes. We show for a large class of initial measures and diffusive dynamics both short-time conservation of Gibbsianness and dynamical Gibbs-non-Gibbs transitions.
In this paper, we present a novel extension to the classical path coupling method to statistical mechanical models which we refer to as aggregate path coupling. In conjunction with large deviations estimates, we use this aggregate path coupling method to prove rapid mixing of Glauber dynamics for a large class of statistical mechanical models, including models that exhibit discontinuous phase transitions which have traditionally been more difficult to analyze rigorously. The parameter region for rapid mixing for the generalized Curie-Weiss-Potts model is derived as a new application of the agg…
We prove a large deviation principle for a sequence of point processes defined by Gibbs probability measures on a Polish space. This is obtained as a consequence of a more general Laplace principle for the non-normalized Gibbs measures. We consider three main applications: Conditional Gibbs measures on compact spaces, Coulomb gases on compact Riemannian manifolds and the usual Gibbs measures in the Euclidean space. Finally, we study the generalization of Fekete points and prove a deterministic version of the Laplace principle known as $Γ$-convergence. The approach is partly inspired by the wor…
We consider the random point processes on a measure space X defined by the Gibbs measures associated to a given sequence of N-particle Hamiltonians H^{(N)}. Inspired by the method of Messer-Spohn for proving concentration properties for the laws of the corresponding empirical measures, we propose a number of hypotheses on H^{(N)} which are quite general, but still strong enough to extend the approach of Messer-Spohn. The hypotheses are formulated in terms of the asymptotics of the corresponding mean energy functionals. We show that in many situations the approach even yields a Large Deviation …
We establish large deviation principles (LDPs) for empirical measures associated with a sequence of Gibbs distributions on $n$-particle configurations, each of which is defined in terms of an inverse temperature $% β_n$ and an energy functional consisting of a (possibly singular) interaction potential and a (possibly weakly) confining potential. Under fairly general assumptions on the potentials, we use a common framework to establish LDPs both with speeds $β_n/n \rightarrow \infty$, in which case the rate function is expressed in terms of a functional involving the potentials, and with speed …
The entropy of an ergodic finite-alphabet process can be computed from a single typical sample path x_1^n using the entropy of the k-block empirical probability and letting k grow with $n$ roughly like log n. We further assume that the distribution of the process is a g-measure; g-measures form a large class of Gibbs measures. We prove large deviation principles for conditional, non-conditional and relative k(n)-block empirical entropies.
In this paper, we show that the empirical measure of mean-field model satisfies the large deviation principle with respect to the weak convergence topology or the stronger Wasserstein metric, under the strong exponential integrability condition on the negative part of the interaction potentials. In contrast to the known results we prove this without any continuity or boundedness condition on the interaction potentials. The proof relies mainly on the law of large numbers and the exponential decoupling inequality of de la Pena for U-statistics.

In this paper, we study the asymptotic thin-shell width concentration for random vectors uniformly distributed in Orlicz balls. We provide both asymptotic upper and lower bounds on the probability of such a random vector $X_n$ being in a thin shell of radius $\sqrt{n}$ times the asymptotic value of $n^{-1/2}\left(\mathbb E\left[\| X_n\|_2^2\right]\right)^{1/2}$ (as $n\to\infty$), showing that in certain ranges our estimates are optimal. In particular, our estimates significantly improve upon the currently best known general Lee-Vempala bound when the deviation parameter $t=t_n$ goes down to ze…
In this paper we prove a large deviation principle (LDP) for the empirical measure of a general system of mean-field interacting diffusions with singular drift (as the number of particles tends to infinity) and show convergence to the associated McKean-Vlasov equation. Along the way, we prove an extended version of the Varadhan Integral Lemma for a discontinuous change of measure and subsequently an LDP for Gibbs and Gibbs-like measures with singular potentials.
We continue our study of Gibbs-non-Gibbs dynamical transitions. In the present paper we consider a system of Ising spins on a large discrete torus with a Kac-type interaction subject to an independent spin-flip dynamics (infinite-temperature Glauber dynamics). We show that, in accordance with the program outlined in \cite{vEFedHoRe10}, in the thermodynamic limit Gibbs-non-Gibbs dynamical transitions are \emph{equivalent} to bifurcations in the set of global minima of the large-deviation rate function for the trajectories of the empirical density \emph{conditional} on their endpoint. More preci…
We study a Gibbs measure over Brownian motion with a pair potential which depends only on the increments. Assuming a particular form of this pair potential, we establish that in the infinite volume limit the Gibbs measure can be viewed as Brownian motion moving in a dynamic random environment. Thereby we are in a position to use the technique of Kipnis and Varadhan and to prove a functional central limit theorem.
We show that under a low complexity condition on the gradient of a Hamiltonian, Gibbs distributions on the Boolean hypercube are approximate mixtures of product measures whose probability vectors are critical points of an associated mean-field functional. This extends a previous work by the first author. As an application, we demonstrate how this framework helps characterize both Ising models satisfying a mean-field condition and the conditional distributions which arise in the emerging theory of nonlinear large deviations, both in the dense case and in the polynomially-sparse case.
We establish the large deviation principle for a topological Markov shift over infinite alphabet which satisfies strong combinatorial assumptions called ``finite irreducibility'' or ``finite primitiveness''. More precisely, we assume the existence of a Gibbs state for a potential $ϕ$ in the sense of Bowen, and prove the level-2 Large Deviation Principles for the distribution of empirical means under the Gibbs state, as well as that of weighted periodic points and iterated pre-images. The rate function is written with the pressure and the free energy associated with the potential $ϕ$.
We introduce the multiplicative Ising model and prove basic properties of its thermodynamic formalism such as existence of pressure and entropies. We generalize to one-dimensional "layer-unique" Gibbs measures for which the same results can be obtained. For more general models associated to a $d$-dimensional multiplicative invariant potential, we prove a large deviation theorem in the uniqueness regime for averages of multiplicative shifts of general local functions. This thermodynamic formalism is motivated by the statistical properties of multiple ergodic averages.
We investigate the Gibbs properties of the fuzzy Potts model on the d-dimensional torus with Kac interaction. We use a variational approach for profiles inspired by that of Fernandez, den Hollander and Martınez for their study of the Gibbs-non-Gibbs transitions of a dynamical Kac-Ising model on the torus. As our main result, we show that the mean-field thresholds dividing Gibbsian from non-Gibbsian behavior are sharp in the fuzzy Kac-Potts model with class size unequal two. On the way to this result we prove a large deviation principle for color profiles with diluted total mass densities and u…
We prove a large deviation principle for the expectation of macroscopic observables in quantum (and classical) Gibbs states. Our proof is based on Ruelle-Lanford functions and direct subadditivity arguments, as in the classical case, instead of relying on Gärtner-Ellis theorem, and cluster expansion or transfer operators as done in the quantum case. In this approach we recover, expand, and unify quantum (and classical) large deviation results for lattice Gibbs states. In the companion paper \cite{OR} we discuss the characterization of rate functions in terms of relative entropies.
We provide a stochastic interpretation of non-commutative Dirichlet forms in the context of quantum filtering. For stochastic processes motivated by quantum optics experiments, we derive an optimal finite time deviation bound expressed in terms of the non-commutative Dirichlet form. Introducing and developing new non-commutative functional inequalities, we deduce concentration inequalities for these processes. Examples satisfying our bounds include tensor products of quantum Markov semigroups as well as Gibbs samplers above a threshold temperature.
We consider the Curie-Weiss model at a given initial temperature in vanishing external field evolving under a Glauber spin-flip dynamics corresponding to a possibly different temperature. We study the limiting conditional probabilities and their continuity properties and discuss their set of points of discontinuity (bad points). We provide a complete analysis of the transition between Gibbsian and non-Gibbsian behavior as a function of time, extending earlier work for the case of independent spin-flip dynamics. For initial temperature bigger than one we prove that the time-evolved measure stay…
We perform a detailed study of Gibbs-non-Gibbs transitions for the Curie-Weiss model subject to independent spin-flip dynamics ("infinite-temperature" dynamics). We show that, in this setup, the program outlined in van Enter, Fernández, den Hollander and Redig can be fully completed, namely that Gibbs-non-Gibbs transitions are equivalent to bifurcations in the set of global minima of the large-deviation rate function for the trajectories of the magnetization conditioned on their endpoint. As a consequence, we show that the time-evolved model is non-Gibbs if and only if this set is not a single…
We study the problem of continuum percolation in infinite volume Gibbs measures for particles with an attractive pair potential, with a focus on low temperatures (large $β$). The main results are bounds on percolation thresholds $ρ_\pm(β)$ in terms of the density rather than the chemical potential or activity. In addition, we prove a variational formula for a large deviations rate function for cluster size distributions. This formula establishes a link with the Gibbs variational principle and a form of equivalence of ensembles, and allows us to combine knowledge on finite volume, canonical Gib…
In order to sample from a given target distribution (often of Gibbs type), the Monte Carlo Markov chain method consists in constructing an ergodic Markov process whose invariant measure is the target distribution. By sampling the Markov process one can then compute, approximately, expectations of observables with respect to the target distribution. Often the Markov processes used in practice are time-reversible (i.e., they satisfy detailed balance), but our main goal here is to assess and quantify how the addition of a non-reversible part to the process can be used to improve the sampling prop…
The aim of this paper is to use non asymptotic bounds for the probability of rare events in the Sanov theorem, in order to study the asymptotics in conditional limit theorems (Gibbs conditioning principle for thin sets). Applications to stochastic mechanics or calibration problems for diffusion processes are discussed.
Many problems of interest in computer science and information theory can be phrased in terms of a probability distribution over discrete variables associated to the vertices of a large (but finite) sparse graph. In recent years, considerable progress has been achieved by viewing these distributions as Gibbs measures and applying to their study heuristic tools from statistical physics. We review this approach and provide some results towards a rigorous treatment of these problems.
We establish the Level-1 and Level-3 Large Deviation Principles (LDPs) for invariant measures on shift spaces over finite alphabets under very general decoupling conditions for which the thermodynamic formalism does not apply. Such decoupling conditions arise naturally in multifractal analysis, in Gibbs states with hard-core interactions, and in the statistics of repeated quantum measurement processes. We also prove the LDP for the entropy production of pairs of such measures and derive the related Fluctuation Relation. The proofs are based on Ruelle-Lanford functions, and the exposition is es…
We consider large random trees under Gibbs distributions and prove a Large Deviation Principle (LDP) for the distribution of degrees of vertices of the tree. The LDP rate function is given explicitly. An immediate consequence is a Law of Large Numbers for the distribution of vertex degrees in a large random tree. Our motivation for this study comes from the analysis of RNA secondary structures.
Let $X_{1},..,X_{n}$ denote an i.i.d. sample with light tail distribution and $S_{1}^{n}$ denote the sum of its terms; let $a_{n}$ be a real sequence\ going to infinity with $n.$\ In a previous paper (\cite{BoniaCao}) it is proved that as $n\rightarrow\infty$, given $\left(S_{1}^{n}/n>a_{n}\right) $ all terms $X_{i_{\text{}}}$ concentrate around $a_{n}$ with probability going to 1. This paper explores the asymptotic distribution of $X_{1}$ under the conditioning events $\left(S_{1}^{n}/n=a_{n}\right) $ and $\left(S_{1}^{n}/n\geq a_{n}\right)$ . It is proved that under some regulatity property,…
We consider a system of real-valued spins interacting with each other through a mean-field Hamiltonian that depends on the empirical magnetization of the spins via a general potential. The system is subjected to a stochastic dynamics where the spins perform independent Brownian motions. As in \cite{FedHoMa13}, which considers the Curie-Weiss model with Ising spins interacting via a quadratic potential and subjected to independent spins flips, we follow the program outlined in \cite{vEFedHoRe10}. We show that in the thermodynamic limit the system is non-Gibbs at time $t \in (0,\infty)$ if and o…
We study an optimal mass threshold for normalizability of the Gibbs measures associated with the focusing mass-critical nonlinear Schrödinger equation on the one-dimensional torus. In an influential paper, Lebowitz, Rose, and Speer (1988) proposed a critical mass threshold given by the mass of the ground state on the real line. We provide a proof for the optimality of this critical mass threshold. The proof also applies to the two-dimensional radial problem posed on the unit disc. In this case, we answer a question posed by Bourgain and Bulut (2014) on the optimal mass threshold. Furthermore, …
These notes have been written to complete a mini-course "Introduction to (generalized) Gibbs measures" given at the universities UFMG (Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, Belo Horizonte, Brasil) and UFRGS (Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul, Porto Alegre, Brasil) during the first semester 2007. The main goal of the lectures was to describe Gibbs and generalized Gibbs measures on lattices at a rigorous mathematical level, as equilibirum states of systems of a huge number of particles in interaction. In particular, our main message is that although the historical approach based on poten…
This paper explores a conditional Gibbs theorem for a random walkinduced by i.i.d. (X_{1},..,X_{n}) conditioned on an extreme deviation of its sum (S_{1}^{n}=na_{n}) or (S_{1}^{n}>na_{n}) where a_{n}\rightarrow\infty. It is proved that when the summands have light tails with some additional regulatity property, then the asymptotic conditional distribution of X_{1} can be approximated in variation norm by the tilted distribution at point a_{n}, extending therefore the classical LDP case.
We consider $(M,d)$ a connected and compact manifold and we denote by $X$ the Bernoulli space $M^{\mathbb{N}}$. The shift acting on $X$ is denoted by $σ$. We analyze the general XY model, as presented in a recent paper by A. T. Baraviera, L. M. Cioletti, A. O. Lopes, J. Mohr and R. R. Souza. Denote the Gibbs measure by $μ_{c}:=h_{c}ν_{c}$, where $h_{c}$ is the eigenfunction, and, $ν_{c}$ is the eigenmeasure of the Ruelle operator associated to $cf$. We are going to prove that any measure selected by $μ_{c}$, as $c\to +\infty$, is a maximizing measure for $f$. We also show, when the maximizing …
We consider particle systems with mean-field interactions whose distribution is invariant by translations. Under the assumption that the system seen from its centre of mass be reversible with respect to a Gibbs measure, we establish large deviation principles for its empirical measure at equilibrium. Our study covers the cases of McKean-Vlasov particle systems without external potential, and systems of rank-based interacting diffusions. Depending on the strength of the interaction, the large deviation principles are stated in the space of centered probability measures endowed with the Wasserst…
The problem of the description of finite factor representations of the infinite-dimensional unitary group, investigated by Voiculescu in 1976, is equivalent to the description of all totally positive Toeplitz matrices. Vershik-Kerov showed that this problem is also equivalent to the description of the simplex of central (i.e. possessing a certain Gibbs property) measures on paths in the Gelfand-Tsetlin graph. We study a quantum version of the latter problem. We introduce a notion of a q-centrality and describe the simplex of all q-central measures on paths in the Gelfand-Tsetlin graph. Conject…
We consider certain self-adjoint observables for the KMS state associated to the Hamiltonian $H= σ^x \otimes σ^x$ over the quantum spin lattice $\mathbb{C}^2 \otimes \mathbb{C}^2 \otimes \mathbb{C}^2 \otimes ...$. For a fixed observable of the form $L \otimes L \otimes L \otimes ...$, where $L:\mathbb{C}^2 \to \mathbb{C}^2 $, and for the zero temperature limit one can get a naturally defined stationary probability $μ$ on the Bernoulli space $\{1,2\}^\mathbb{N}$. This probability is ergodic but it is not mixing for the shift map. It is not a Gibbs state for a continuous normalized potential but…
Consider a sequence of continuous-time Markov chains $(X^{(n)}_t:t\ge 0)$ evolving on a fixed finite state space $V$. Let $I_n$ be the level two large deviations rate functional for $X^{(n)}_t$, as $t\to\infty$. Under a hypothesis on the jump rates, we prove that $I_n$ can be written as $I_n = I^{(0)} \,+\, \sum_{1\le p\le q} (1/θ^{(p)}_n) \, I^{(p)}$ for some rate functionals $I^{(p)}$. The weights $θ^{(p)}_n$ correspond to the time-scales at which the sequence of Markov chains $X^{(n)}_t$ exhibit a metastable behavior, and the zero level sets of the rate functionals $I^{(p)}$ identify the me…
We are interested in the analysis of Gibbs measures defined on two independent Brownian paths in $\mathbb R^d$ interacting through a mutual self-attraction. This is expressed by the Hamiltonian $\int\int_{\mathbb R^{2d}} V(x-y) μ(d x)ν(d y)$ with two probability measures $μ$ and $ν$ representing the occupation measures of two independent Brownian motions. We will be interested in class of potentials $V$ which are {\it{singular}}, e.g., Dirac or Coulomb type interactions in $\mathbb R^3$, or the correlation function of the parabolic Anderson problem with white noise potential. The mutual intera…
We investigate a probabilistic model for routeing of messages in relay-augmented multihop ad-hoc networks, where each transmitter sends one message to the origin. Given the (random) transmitter locations, we weight the family of random, uniformly distributed message trajectories by an exponential probability weight, favouring trajectories with low interference (measured in terms of signal-to-interference ratio) and trajectory families with little congestion (measured in terms of the number of pairs of hops using the same relay). Under the resulting Gibbs measure, the system targets the best co…
We study a rolling model from the perspective of probability. More precisely, we consider a Riemannian manifold rolling against Euclidean space, where the rolling is coupled with random slipping and twisting. The system is modelled by a stochastic differential equation of Stratonovich-type driven by semimartingales, on the orthonormal frame bundle. The stability of the system is examined via large deviations. We prove the large deviation principles for the projection curves on the base manifold and their horizontal lifts respectively, provided that the large deviation holds for the random Eucl…
For hyperbolic flows $φ_t$ we examine the Gibbs measure of points $w$ for which $$\int_0^T G(φ_t w) dt - a T \in (- e^{-εn}, e^{- εn})$$ as $n \to \infty$ and $T \geq n$, provided $ε> 0$ is sufficiently small. This is similar to local central limit theorems. The fact that the interval $(- e^{-εn}, e^{- εn})$ is exponentially shrinking as $n \to \infty$ leads to several difficulties. Under some geometric assumptions we establish a sharp large deviation result with leading term $C(a) ε_n e^{γ(a) T}$ and rate function $γ(a) \leq 0.$ The proof is based on the spectral estimates for the iterations …
The focus of this work is on local stability of a class of nonlinear ordinary differential equations (ODE) that describe limits of empirical measures associated with finite-state weakly interacting N-particle systems. Local Lyapunov functions are identified for several classes of such ODE, including those associated with systems with slow adaptation and Gibbs systems. Using results from [5] and large deviations heuristics, a partial differential equation (PDE) associated with the nonlinear ODE is introduced and it is shown that positive definite subsolutions of this PDE serve as local Lyapunov…
We analyze hypotheses tests using classical results on large deviations to compare two models, each one described by a different Hölder Gibbs probability measure. One main difference to the classical hypothesis tests in Decision Theory is that here the two measures are singular with respect to each other. Among other objectives, we are interested in the decay rate of the wrong decisions probability, when the sample size $n$ goes to infinity. We show a dynamical version of the Neyman-Pearson Lemma displaying the ideal test within a certain class of similar tests. This test becomes exponentially…
In this article we consider an extension of the classical Curie-Weiss model in which the global and deterministic external magnetic field is replaced by local and random external fields which interact with each spin of the system. We prove a Large Deviations Principle for the so-called {\it magnetization per spin} $S_n/n$ with respect to the associated Gibbs measure, where $S_n/n$ is the scaled partial sum of spins. In particular, we obtain an explicit expression for the LDP rate function, which enables an extensive study of the phase diagram in some examples. It is worth mentioning that the m…
