In this paper we prove a large deviation principle (LDP) for the empirical measure of a general system of mean-field interacting diffusions with singular drift (as the number of particles tends to infinity) and show convergence to the associated McKean-Vlasov equation. Along the way, we prove an extended version of the Varadhan Integral Lemma for a discontinuous change of measure and subsequently an LDP for Gibbs and Gibbs-like measures with singular potentials.
In this work, we prove the well--posedness of a singularly interacting stochastic particle system and we establish propagation of chaos result towards the one-dimensional parabolic-parabolic Keller-Segel model.
We establish the large deviation principle (LDP) for stochastic flows of interacting Brownian motions. In particular, we consider smoothly correlated flows, coalescing flows and Brownian motion stopped at a hitting moment.
We prove the Large Deviation Principle for the empirical process in a system of locally interacting Brownian motions in the nonequilibrium dynamic. Such a phenomenon has been proven only for two lattice systems: the symmetric simple exclusion process and zero-range process. Therefore, we have achieved the third result in this context and moreover the first result for the diffusion-type interacting particle system.
We establish uniqueness for a class of first-order Hamilton-Jacobi equations with Hamiltonians that arise from the large deviations of the empirical measure and empirical flux pair of weakly interacting Markov jump processes. As a corollary we obtain a large deviation principle for the trajectory of the empirical measure and empirical flux pair of such processes. As a second corollary we get same result in the setting where the jump-rates are time-periodic, with period-length that decreases to 0.
We consider a system of stochastic interacting particles in $\mathbb{R}^d$ and we describe large deviations asymptotics in a joint mean-field and small-noise limit. Precisely, a large deviations principle (LDP) is established for the empirical measure and the stochastic current, as the number of particles tends to infinity and the noise vanishes, simultaneously. We give a direct proof of the LDP using tilting and subsequently exploiting the link between entropy and large deviations. To this aim we employ consistency of suitable deterministic control problems associated to the stochastic dynami…
We consider oscillatory systems of interacting Hawkes processes introduced in Ditlevsen and Loecherbach (2017) to model multi-class systems of interacting neurons together with the diffusion approximations of their intensity processes. This diffusion, which incorporates the memory terms defining the dynamics of the Hawkes process, is hypo-elliptic. It is given by a high dimensional chain of differential equations driven by $2-$dimensional Brownian motion. We study the large-population-, i.e., small noise-limit of its invariant measure for which we establish a large deviation result in the spir…
Moderate deviation principles for empirical measure processes associated with weakly interacting Markov processes are established. Two families of models are considered: the first corresponds to a system of interacting diffusions whereas the second describes a collection of pure jump Markov processes with a countable state space. For both cases the moderate deviation principle is formulated in terms of a large deviation principle (LDP), with an appropriate speed function, for suitably centered and normalized empirical measure processes. For the first family of models the LDP is established in …
We prove a Large Deviations Principle (LDP) for systems of diffusions (particles) interacting through their ranks, when the number of particles tends to infinity. We show that the limiting particle density is given by the unique solution of the approriate McKean-Vlasov equation and that the corresponding cumulative distribution function evolves according to the porous medium equation with convection. The large deviations rate function is provided in explicit form. This is the first instance of a LDP for interacting diffusions, where the interaction occurs both through the drift and the diffusi…
We consider a collection of weakly interacting diffusion processes moving in a two-scale locally periodic environment. We study the large deviations principle of the empirical distribution of the particles' positions in the combined limit as the number of particles grow to infinity and the time-scale separation parameter goes to zero simultaneously. We make use of weak convergence methods providing a convenient representation for the large deviations rate function, which allow us to characterize the effective controlled mean field dynamics. In addition, we obtain equivalent representations for…
We establish a process level large deviation principle for systems of interacting Bessel-like diffusion processes. By establishing weak uniqueness for the limiting non-local SDE of McKean-Vlasov type, we conclude that the latter describes the process level hydrodynamic limit of such systems and obtain a propagation of chaos result. This is the first instance of results of this type in the context of interacting diffusion processes under explicit assumptions on the coefficients, where the diffusion coefficients are allowed to be both non-Lipschitz and degenerate. In the second part of the paper…
This paper studies large deviations of a ``fully coupled" finite state mean-field interacting particle system in a fast varying environment. The empirical measure of the particles evolves in the slow time scale and the random environment evolves in the fast time scale. Our main result is the path-space large deviation principle for the joint law of the empirical measure process of the particles and the occupation measure process of the fast environment. This extends previous results known for two time scale diffusions to two time scale mean-field models with jumps. Our proof is based on the me…
This paper studies probabilistic mean-field models for interacting bosons at a positive temperature in the thermodynamic limit with random particle density. In particular, we prove large deviation principles for empirical cycle counts in all our models, and as such generalise recent work in \cite{ACK} where upper and lower large deviation bounds do not match. Namely, on the one hand we generalise to the so-called grand canonical ensemble, and on the other hand, we consider classes of interaction potentials depending on the cycle counts which are not restricted to be positive. Our large deviati…
Consider a collection of particles whose state evolution is described through a system of interacting diffusions in which each particle is driven by an independent individual source of noise and also by a small amount of noise that is common to all particles. The interaction between the particles is due to the common noise and also through the drift and diffusion coefficients that depend on the state empirical measure. We study large deviation behavior of the empirical measure process which is governed by two types of scaling, one corresponding to mean field asymptotics and the other to the Fr…
A basic result of large deviations theory is Sanov's theorem, which states that the sequence of empirical measures of independent and identically distributed samples satisfies the large deviation principle with rate function given by relative entropy with respect to the common distribution. Large deviation principles for the empirical measures are also known to hold for broad classes of weakly interacting systems. When the interaction through the empirical measure corresponds to an absolutely continuous change of measure, the rate function can be expressed as relative entropy of a distribution…
We study large deviation properties of systems of weakly interacting particles modeled by Itô stochastic differential equations (SDEs). It is known under certain conditions that the corresponding sequence of empirical measures converges, as the number of particles tends to infinity, to the weak solution of an associated McKean-Vlasov equation. We derive a large deviation principle via the weak convergence approach. The proof, which avoids discretization arguments, is based on a representation theorem, weak convergence and ideas from stochastic optimal control. The method works under rather mil…
We establish a large deviation principle for the empirical measure process associated with a general class of finite-state mean field interacting particle systems with Lipschitz continuous transition rates that satisfy a certain ergodicity condition. The approach is based on a variational representation for functionals of a Poisson random measure. Under an appropriate strengthening of the ergodicity condition, we also prove a locally uniform large deviation principle. The main novelty is that more than one particle is allowed to change its state simultaneously, and so a standard approach to th…
This paper concerns the large deviations of a system of interacting particles on a random graph. There is no stochasticity, and the only sources of disorder are the random graph connections, and the initial condition. The average number of afferent edges on any particular vertex must diverge to infinity as $N\to \infty$, but can do so at an arbitrarily slow rate. These results are thus accurate for both sparse and dense random graphs. A particular application to sparse Erdos-Renyi graphs is provided. The theorem is proved by pushing forward a Large Deviation Principle for a `nested empirical m…
We consider a mean-field system of path-dependent stochastic interacting diffusions in random media over a finite time window. The interaction term is given as a function of the empirical measure and is allowed to be non-linear and path dependent. We prove that the sequence of empirical measures of the full trajectories satisfies a large deviation principle with explicit rate function. The minimizer of the rate function is characterized as the path-dependent McKean-Vlasov diffusion associated to the system. As corollary, we obtain a strong law of large numbers for the sequence of empirical mea…
In this work we determine a process-level Large Deviation Principle (LDP) for a model of interacting neurons indexed by a lattice $\mathbb{Z}^d$. The neurons are subject to noise, which is modelled as a correlated martingale. The probability law governing the noise is strictly stationary, and we are therefore able to find a LDP for the probability laws $Π^n$ governing the stationary empirical measure $\hatμ^n$ generated by the neurons in a cube of length $(2n+1)$. We use this LDP to determine an LDP for the neural network model. The connection weights between the neurons evolve according to a …
We consider a system of $N^{d}$ spins in random environment with a random local mean field type interaction. Each spin has a fixed spatial position on the torus $\mathbb{T}^{d}$, an attached random environment and a spin value in $\mathbb{R}$ that evolves according to a space and environment dependent Langevin dynamic. The interaction between two spins depends on the spin values, on the spatial distance and the random environment of both spins. We prove the path large deviation principle from the hydrodynamic (or local mean field McKean-Vlasov) limit and derive different expressions of the rat…
Using the weak convergence approach to large deviations, we formulate and prove the large deviation principle (LDP) for W-random graphs in the cut-norm topology. This generalizes the LDP for Erdős-R{\' e}nyi random graphs by Chatterjee and Varadhan. Furthermore, we translate the LDP for random graphs to a class of interacting dynamical systems on such graphs. To this end, we demonstrate that the solutions of the dynamical models depend continuously on the underlying graphs with respect to the cut-norm and apply the contraction principle.
We introduce two probabilistic models for $N$ interacting Brownian motions moving in a trap in $\mathbb {R}^d$ under mutually repellent forces. The two models are defined in terms of transformed path measures on finite time intervals under a trap Hamiltonian and two respective pair-interaction Hamiltonians. The first pair interaction exhibits a particle repellency, while the second one imposes a path repellency. We analyze both models in the limit of diverging time with fixed number $N$ of Brownian motions. In particular, we prove large deviations principles for the normalized occupation measu…
We consider a class of particle systems described by differential equations (both stochastic and deterministic), in which the interaction network is determined by the realization of an Erdős-Rényi graph with parameter $p_n\in (0, 1]$, where $n$ is the size of the graph (i.e., the number of particles). If $p_n\equiv 1$ the graph is the complete graph (mean field model) and it is well known that, under suitable hypotheses, the empirical measure converges as $n\to \infty$ to the solution of a PDE: a McKean-Vlasov (or Fokker-Planck) equation in the stochastic case, or a Vlasov equation in the dete…
We study a system of interacting particles that randomly react to form new particles. The reaction flux is the rescaled number of reactions that take place in a time interval. We prove a dynamic large-deviation principle for the reaction fluxes under general assumptions that include mass-action kinetics. This result immediately implies the dynamic large deviations for the empirical concentration.
We consider systems of mean-field interacting diffusions, where the pairwise interaction structure is described by a sparse (and potentially inhomogeneous) random graph. Examples include the stochastic Kuramoto model with pairwise interactions given by an Erdős-Rényi graph. Our problem is to compare the bulk behavior of such systems with that of corresponding systems with dense nonrandom interactions. For a broad class of interaction functions, we find the optimal sparsity condition that implies that the two systems have the same hydrodynamic limit, which is given by a McKean-Vlasov diffusion.…
The aim of the paper is to establish a large deviation principle (LDP) for the empirical measure of mean-field interacting diffusions in a random environment. The point is to derive such a result once the environment has been frozen (quenched model). The main theorem states that a LDP holds for every realization of the environment, with a rate function that does not depend on the disorder and is different from the rate function in the averaged model. Similar results concerning the empirical flow and local empirical measures are provided.
A pathwise large deviation result is proved for the pure jump models of $k$-nary interacting particle system introduced by Kolokoltsov that generalize classical Boltzmann's collision model, Smoluchovski's coagulation model and many others. The upper bound is obtained by following the standard methods of using a process "perturbed" by a regular function. To show the lower bound, we propose a family of orthogonal martingale measures and prove a coupling for the general perturbations. The rate function is studied based on the idea of Léonard with a simplification by considering the conjugation of…
This article is concerned with moderate deviation principles of a general class of mean eld type interacting particle models. We discuss functional moderate deviations of the occupation measures for both the strong -topology on the space of fi nite and bounded measures as well as for the corresponding stochastic processes on some class of functions equipped with the uniform topology. Our approach is based on an original semigroup analysis combined with stochastic perturbation techniques and projective limit large deviation methods.
We study current fluctuations in lattice gases in the hydrodynamic scaling limit. More precisely, we prove a large deviation principle for the empirical current in the symmetric simple exclusion process with rate functional I. We then estimate the asymptotic probability of a fluctuation of the average current over a large time interval and show that the corresponding rate function can be obtained by solving a variational problem for the functional I. For the symmetric simple exclusion process the minimizer is time independent so that this variational problem can be reduced to a time independen…
Level 2.5 large deviations and uncertainty relations for self-interacting jump processes: tilting constructions and the emergence of time-scale separation
We consider extended slow-fast systems of N interacting diffusions. The typical behavior of the empirical density is described by a nonlinear McKean-Vlasov equation depending on , the scaling parameter separating the time scale of the slow variable from the time scale of the fast variable. Its atypical behavior is encapsulated in a large N Large Deviation Principle (LDP) with a rate functional. We study the $Γ$-convergence of as $\rightarrow$ 0 and show it converges to the rate functional appearing in the Macroscopic Fluctuations Theory (MFT) for diffusive systems.
We consider a lattice gas evolving in a bounded cylinder of length 2N + 1 and interacting via a Neuman Kac interaction of range N, in contact with particles reservoirs at different densities. We investigate the associated law of large numbers and large deviations of the empirical current and of the density. The hydrodynamic limit for the empirical density, obtained in the diffusive scaling, is given by a nonlocal, nonlinear evolution equation with Dirichlet boundary conditions.
We consider a stochastic interacting vortex system of $N$ particles, approximating the vorticity formulation of 2-D Navier-Stokes equation on torus. The singular interaction kernel is given by the Biot-Savart law. We only require the initial state to have finite energy, and obtain a sample-path large deviation principle for the empirical measure when the number of vortices goes to infinity. The rate function is characterized by an explicit formula supporting on sample paths with finite energy and finite integral of $L^2$ norms over time. The proof utilizes a symmetrization technique for the re…
We establish a Sanov type large deviation principle for an ensemble of interacting Brownian rough paths. As application a large deviations for the ($k$-layer, enhanced) empirical measure of weakly interacting diffusions is obtained. This in turn implies a propagation of chaos result in rough path spaces and allows for a robust subsequent analysis of the particle system and its McKean-Vlasov type limit, as shown in two corollaries.
We compute the Hamiltonian and Lagrangian associated to the large deviations of the trajectory of the empirical distribution for independent Markov processes, and of the empirical measure for translation invariant interacting Markov processes. We treat both the case of jump processes (continuous-time Markov chains and interacting particle systems) as well as diffusion processes. For diffusion processes, the Lagrangian is a quadratic form of the deviation of the trajectory from the Kolmogorov forward equation. In all cases, the Lagrangian can be interpreted as a relative entropy or relative ent…
We consider particle systems with mean-field interactions whose distribution is invariant by translations. Under the assumption that the system seen from its centre of mass be reversible with respect to a Gibbs measure, we establish large deviation principles for its empirical measure at equilibrium. Our study covers the cases of McKean-Vlasov particle systems without external potential, and systems of rank-based interacting diffusions. Depending on the strength of the interaction, the large deviation principles are stated in the space of centered probability measures endowed with the Wasserst…
In this paper, we establish a large deviations principle (LDP) for interacting particle systems that arise from state and action dynamics of discrete-time mean-field games under the equilibrium policy of the infinite-population limit. The LDP is proved under weak Feller continuity of state and action dynamics. The proof is based on transferring LDP for empirical measures of initial states and noise variables under setwise topology to the original game model via contraction principle, which was first suggested by Delarue, Lacker, and Ramanan to establish LDP for continuous-time mean-field games…
The Adaptive Multilevel Splitting (AMS) algorithm is a powerful and versatile method for the simulation of rare events. It is based on an interacting (via a mutation-selection procedure) system of replicas, and depends on two integer parameters: n $\in$ N * the size of the system and the number k $\in$ {1, . . . , n -- 1} of the replicas that are eliminated and resampled at each iteration. In an idealized setting, we analyze the performance of this algorithm in terms of a Large Deviations Principle when n goes to infinity, for the estimation of the (small) probability P(X \textgreater{} a) whe…
Large deviations of conservative interacting particle systems, such as the zero range process, about their hydrodynamic limit and their respective rate functions lead to the analysis of the skeleton equation; a degenerate parabolic-hyperbolic PDE with irregular drift. We develop a robust well-posedness theory for such PDEs in energy-critical spaces based on concepts of renormalized solutions and the equation's kinetic form. We establish these properties by proving that renormalized solutions are equivalent to classical weak solutions, extending concepts of [DiPerna, Lions; Ann. Math., 1989], […
In the nonlinear diffusion framework, stochastic processes of McKean-Vlasov type play an important role. In some cases they correspond to processes attracted by their own probability distribution: the so-called self-stabilizing processes. Such diffusions can be obtained by taking the hydrodymamic limit in a huge system of linear diffusions in interaction. In both cases, for the linear and the nonlinear processes, small-noise asymptotics have been emphasized by specific large deviation phenomenons. The natural question, therefore, is: is it possible to interchange the mean-field limit with the …
We study the large deviation behaviour of the trajectories of empirical distributions of independent copies of time-homogeneous Feller processes on locally compact metric spaces. Under the condition that we can find a suitable core for the generator of the Feller process, we are able to define a notion of absolutely continuous trajectories of measures in terms of some topology on this core. Also, we define a Hamiltonian in terms of the linear generator and a Lagrangian as its Legendre transform. We prove the large deviation principle and show that the rate function can be decomposed as a rate …
We prove the large deviation principle for the trajectory of a broad class of mean field interacting Markov jump processes via a general analytic approach based on viscosity solutions. Examples include generalized Ehrenfest models as well as Curie-Weiss spin flip dynamics with singular jump rates. The main step in the proof of the large deviation principle, which is of independent interest, is the proof of the comparison principle for an associated collection of Hamilton-Jacobi equations. Additionally, we show that the large deviation principle provides a general method to identify a Lyapunov …
We study the asymptotic law of a network of interacting neurons when the number of neurons becomes infinite. The dynamics of the neurons is described by a set of stochastic differential equations in discrete time. The neurons interact through the synaptic weights which are Gaussian correlated random variables. We describe the asymptotic law of the network when the number of neurons goes to infinity. Unlike previous works which made the biologically unrealistic assumption that the weights were i.i.d. random variables, we assume that they are correlated. We introduce the process-level empirical …
