Let $X_1$, $X_2$, $...$ be a sequence of independently and identically distributed random variables with $\mathsf{E}X_1=0$, and let $S_0=0$ and $S_t=S_{t-1}+X_t$, $t=1,2,...$, be a random walk. Denote $τ={cases}\inf\{t>1: S_t\leq0\}, &\text{if} \ X_1>0, 1, &\text{otherwise}. {cases}$ Let $α$ denote a positive number, and let $L_α$ denote the number of level-crossings from the below (or above) across the level $α$ during the interval $[0, τ]$. Under quite general assumption, an inequality for the expected number of level-crossings is established. Under some special assumptions, it is proved that there exists an infinitely increasing sequence $α_n$ such that the equality $\mathsf{E}L_{α_n}=c\mathsf{P}\{X_1>0\}$ is satisfied, where $c$ is a specified constant that does not depend on $n$. The result is illustrated for a number of special random walks. We also give non-trivial examples from queuing theory where the results of this theory are applied.
We prove for an arbitrary one-dimensional random walk with independent increments that the probability of crossing a level at a given time n has the order of square root of n. Moment or symmetry assumptions are not necessary. In removing symmetry the (sharp) inequality P(|X+Y| <= 1) < 2 P(|X-Y| <= 1) for independent identically distributed X,Y is used. In part II we shall discuss the connection of this result to 'polygonal recurrence' of higher-dimensional walks and some conjectures on directionally random walks in the sense of Mauldin, Monticino and v.Weizsaecker [5].
In part I (math.PR/0406392) we proved for an arbitrary one-dimensional random walk with independent increments that the probability of crossing a level at a given time n is of the maximal order square root of n. In higher dimensions we call a random walk 'polygonally recurrent' (resp. transient) if a.s. infinitely many (resp. finitely many) of the straight lines between two consecutive sites hit a given bounded set. The above estimate implies that three-dimensional random walks with independent components are polygonally transient. Similarly a directionally reinforced random walk on Z^3 in the…
Suppose that $\{S_n,\ n\geq0\}$ is an asymptotically stable random walk. Let $g$ be a positive function and $T_g$ be the first time when $S_n$ leaves $[-g(n),\infty)$. In this paper we study asymptotic behaviour of $T_g$. We provide integral tests for function $g$ that guarantee $P(T_g>n)\sim V(g)P(T_0>n)$ where $T_0$ is the first strict descending ladder epoch of $\{S_n\}$
We consider the Pólya random walk in $\mathbb{Z}^2$. The paper establishes a number of results for the distributions and expectations of the number of usual (undirected) and specifically defined in the paper up- and down-directed state-crossings and different sets of states crossings. One of the most important results of this paper is that the expected number of undirected state-crossings $\mathbf{n}$ is equal to 1 for any state $\mathbf{n}\in\mathbb{Z}^2\setminus\{\mathbf{0}\}$. As well, the results of the paper are extended to $d$-dimensional random walks, $d\geq2$, in bounded areas.
In this paper, we study the problem of finding the probability that the two-dimensional (biased) monotonic random walk crosses the line $y=αx+d$, where $α,d \geq 0$. A $β$-biased monotonic random walk moves from $(a,b)$ to $(a+1,b)$ or $(a,b+1)$ with probabilities $1/(β+ 1)$ and $β/(β+ 1)$, respectively. Among our results, we show that if $β\geq \lceil α\rceil$, then the $β$-biased monotonic random walk, starting from the origin, crosses the line $y=αx+d$ for all $d\geq 0$ with probability 1.
For a Markov chain $Y$ with values in a Polish space, consider the entrance Markov chain obtained by sampling $Y$ at the moments when it enters a fixed set $A$ from its complement $A^c$. Similarly, consider the exit Markov chain, obtained by sampling $Y$ at the exit times from $A^c$ to $A$. This paper provides a framework for analysing invariant measures of these two types of Markov chains in the case when the initial chain $Y$ has a known $σ$-finite invariant measure. Under certain recurrence-type assumptions ($Y$ can be transient), we give explicit formulas for invariant measures of these ch…
Let $R_n=\max_{0\leq j\leq n}S_j-S_n$ be a random walk $S_n$ reflected in its maximum. Except in the trivial case when $P(X\ge0)=1$, $R_n$ will pass over a horizontal boundary of any height in a finite time, with probability 1. We extend this by giving necessary and sufficient conditions for finiteness of passage times of $R_n$ above certain curved (power law) boundaries, as well. The intuition that a degree of heaviness of the negative tail of the distribution of the increments of $S_n$ is necessary for passage of $R_n$ above a high level is correct in most, but not all, cases, as we show. Co…
A sufficient condition for the uniqueness of multinomial sequential unbiased estimators is provided generalizing a classical result for binomial samples. Unbiased estimators are applied to infer the parameters of multidimensional or multinomial Random Walks which are observed until they reach a boundary. An application to clinical trials is presented.
The Brownian Web (BW) is a family of coalescing Brownian motions starting from every point in space and time $\R\times\R$. It was first introduced by Arratia, and later analyzed in detail by Tóth and Werner. More recently, Fontes, Isopi, Newman and Ravishankar gave a characterization of the BW, and general convergence criteria allowing either crossing or noncrossing paths, which they verified for coalescing simple random walks. Later Ferrari, Fontes, and Wu verified these criteria for a two dimensional Poisson Tree. In both cases, the paths are noncrossing. In this thesis, we formulate new con…
We determine the decay rate of the bottom crossing probability for symmetric jump processes under the condition on heat kernel estimates. Our results are applicable to symmetric stable-like processes and stable-subordinated diffusion processes on a class of (unbounded) fractals and fractal-like spaces.
We study how to sample paths of a random walk up to the first time it crosses a fixed barrier, in the setting where the step sizes are iid with negative mean and have a regularly varying right tail. We introduce a desirable property for a change of measure to be suitable for exact simulation. We study whether the change of measure of Blanchet and Glynn (2008) satisfies this property and show that it does so if and only if the tail index $α$ of the right tail lies in the interval $(1, \, 3/2)$.
We consider a random walk in an i.i.d. non-negative potential on the d-dimensional integer lattice. The walk starts at the origin and is conditioned to hit a remote location y on the lattice. We prove that the expected time under the annealed path measure needed by the random walk to reach y grows only linearly in the distance from y to the origin. In dimension one we show the existence of the asymptotic positive speed.
We study the behavior of Random Walk in Random Environment (RWRE) on trees in the critical case left open in previous work. Representing the random walk by an electrical network, we assume that the ratios of resistances of neighboring edges of a tree Gamma are i.i.d.random variables whose logarithms have mean zero and finite variance. Then the resulting RWRE is transient if simple random walk on Gamma is transient, but not vice versa. We obtain general transience criteria for such walks, which are sharp for symmetric trees of polynomial growth. In order to prove these criteria, we establish re…
We prove a quenched functional central limit theorem for a one-dimensional random walk driven by a simple symmetric exclusion process. This model can be viewed as a special case of the random walk in a balanced random environment, for which the weak quenched limit is constructed as a function of the invariant measure of the environment viewed from the walk. We bypass the need to show the existence of this invariant measure. Instead, we find the limit of the quadratic variation of the walk and give an explicit formula for it.
We consider a random walk among i.i.d. obstacles on the one dimensional integer lattice under the condition that the walk starts from the origin and reaches a remote location y. The obstacles are represented by a killing potential, which takes value M>0 with probability p and value 0 with probability (1-p), 0<p<1, independently at each site of the lattice. We consider the walk under both quenched and annealed measures. It is known that under either measure the crossing time from 0 to y of such walk, tau(y), grows linearly in y. More precisely, the expectation of tau(y)/y converges to a limit a…
We give Harnack inequalities for the hitting distributions of a large family of symmetric random walks on $\Z^2$, and their projections onto the lattice torus $\Z^2_K$. This extends a framework for the simple random walk in Dembo, et al. (2006), and generalizes the results in Bass, Rosen (2007) to the toral projection.
We examine the sets of late points of a symmetric random walk on $Z^2$ projected onto the torus $Z^2_K$, culminating in a limit theorem for the cover time of the toral random walk. This extends the work done for the simple random walk in Dembo, et al. (2006) to a large class of random walks projected onto the lattice torus. The approach uses comparisons between planar and toral hitting times and distributions on annuli, and uses only random walk methods.
In this paper, we penalised the standard random walk by several functions of its maximum. The aim is to show that in spite of very close penalisation functions, under the new probabilities, the canonical process behaves very differently.
Non-trivial linear bounds are obtained for the displacement of a random walk in a dynamic random environment given by a one-dimensional simple symmetric exclusion process in equilibrium. The proof uses an adaptation of multiscale renormalization methods of Kesten and Sidoravicius.
We examine escape and entrance times, Green's functions, local times, and hitting distributions of discs and annuli of a symmetric random walk on $\Z^2$ projected onto the periodic lattice $\Z^2_K$. This extends a framework for the simple planar random walk in Dembo, et al. (2006) to the large class of planar random walks in Bass, Rosen (2007). The approach uses comparisons between $\Z^2$ and $\Z^2_K$ hitting times and distributions on annuli, and uses only random walk methods.
We study the random walk on the symmetric group $S_n$ generated by the conjugacy class of cycles of length $k$. We show that the convergence to uniform measure of this walk has a cut-off in total variation distance after $\frac{n}{k} log n$ steps, uniformly in $k = o(n)$ as $n \to \infty$. The analysis follows from a new asymptotic estimation of the characters of the symmetric group evaluated at cycles.
We study models of continuous time, symmetric, $\Z^d$-valued random walks in random environments. One of our aims is to derive estimates on the decay of transition probabilities in a case where a uniform ellipticity assumption is absent. We consider the case of independent conductances with a polynomial tail near 0, and obtain precise asymptotics for the annealed return probability and convergence times for the random walk confined to a finite box.
In the present paper, we study long time asymptotics of non-symmetric random walks on crystal lattices from a view point of discrete geometric analysis due to Kotani and Sunada [11, 23]. We observe that the Euclidean metric associated with the standard realization of the crystal lattice, called the Albanese metric, naturally appears in the asymptotics. In the former half of the present paper, we establish two kinds of (functional) central limit theorems for random walks. We first show that the Brownian motion on the Euclidean space with the Albanese metric appears as the scaling limit of the u…
We consider a one-dimensional simple symmetric exclusion process in equilibrium, constituting a dynamic random environment for a nearest-neighbor random walk that on occupied/vacant sites has two different local drifts to the right. We construct a renewal structure from which a LLN, a functional CLT and large deviation bounds for the random walk under the annealed measure follow. We further prove an Einstein relation under a suitable perturbation. A brief discussion on the topic of random walks in slowly mixing dynamic random environments is presented.
Let X and Y be two simple symmetric continuous-time random walks on the vertices of the n-dimensional hypercube. We consider the class of co-adapted couplings of these processes, and describe an intuitive coupling which is shown to be the fastest in this class.
We prove an estimate for the probability that a simple random walk in a simply connected subset A of Z^2 starting on the boundary exits A at another specified boundary point. The estimates are uniform over all domains of a given inradius. We apply these estimates to prove a conjecture of S. Fomin in 2001 concerning a relationship between crossing probabilities of loop-erased random walk and Brownian motion.
Recently, Ishiwata, Kawabi and Kotani [2] proved two kinds of central limit theorems for non-symmetric random walks on crystal lattices from the view point of discrete geometric analysis. In the present paper, we obtain yet another kind of the central limit theorem for them. Our argument is based on a measure-change technique due to Alexopoulos [1].
We define a dynamical simple symmetric random walk in one dimension, and show that there almost surely exist exceptional times at which the walk tends to infinity. This is in contrast to the usual dynamical simple symmetric random walk in one dimension, for which such exceptional times are known not to exist. In fact we show that the set of exceptional times has Hausdorff dimension $1/2$ almost surely, and give bounds on the rate at which the walk diverges at such times. We also show noise sensitivity of the event that our random walk is positive after $n$ steps. In fact this event is maximall…
In this paper we define Brownian local time as the almost sure limit of the local times of a nested sequence of simple, symmetric random walks. The limit is jointly continuous in $(t,x)$. The rate of convergence is $n^{\frac14} (\log n)^{\frac34}$ that is close to the best possible. The tools we apply are almost exclusively from elementary probability theory.
The entropy, the spectral radius and the drift are important numerical quantities associated to random walks on countable groups. We prove sharp inequalities relating those quantities for walks with a finite second moment, improving upon previous results of Avez, Varopoulos, Carne, Ledrappier. We also deduce inequalities between these quantities and the volume growth of the group. Finally, we show that the equality case in our inequality is rather rigid.
We derive a local limit theorem for normal, moderate, and large deviations for symmetric simple random walk on the square lattice in dimensions one and two that is an improvement of existing results for points that are particularly distant from the walk's starting point. More specifically, we give explicit asymptotic expressions in terms of $n$ and $x$, where $x$ is thought of as dependent on $n$, in dimensions one and two for $P(S_n=x)$, the probability that symmetric simple random walk $S$ started at the origin is at some point $x$ at time $n$, that are valid for all $x$. We also show that t…
We show that the edges crossed by a random walk in a network form a recurrent graph a.s. In fact, the same is true when those edges are weighted by the number of crossings.
Consider a branching random walk, where the branching mechanism is governed by a Galton-Watson process, and the migration by a finite range symmetric irreducible random walk on the integer lattice $\mathbb{Z}^d$. Let $Z_n(z)$ be the number of the particles in the $n$-th generation at the point $z\in \mathbb{Z}^d$. Under the mild moment conditions for offspring distribution of the underlying Galton-Watson, we derive a second order expansion in the local limit theorem for $Z_n(z)$ for each given $z\in \mathbb{Z}^d$. That generalizes the results for simple branching random walks obtained by Gao […
We give refined estimates for the discrete time and continuous time versions of some basic random walks on the symmetric and alternating groups $S_n$ and $A_n$. We consider the following models: random transposition, transpose top with random, random insertion, and walks generated by the uniform measure on a conjugacy class. In the case of random walks on $S_n$ and $A_n$ generated by the uniform measure on a conjugacy class, we show that in continuous time the $\ell^2$-cuttoff has a lower bound of $(n/2)\log n$. This result, along with the results of Müller, Schlage-Puchta and Roichman, demons…
A new approach to stochastic integration is described, which is based on an a.s. pathwise approximation of the integrator by simple, symmetric random walks. Hopefully, this method is didactically more advantageous, more transparent, and technically less demanding than other existing ones. In a large part of the theory one has a.s. uniform convergence on compacts. In particular, it gives a.s. convergence for the stochastic integral of a finite variation function of the integrator, which is not càdlàg in general.
The longest increasing subsequence of a random walk with mean zero and finite variance is known to be $n^{1/2 + o(1)}$. We show that this is not universal for symmetric random walks. In particular, the symmetric Ultra-fat tailed random walk has a longest increasing subsequence that is asymptotically at least $n^{0.690}$ and at most $n^{0.815}$. An exponent strictly greater than $1/2$ is also shown for the symmetric stable-$α$ distribution when $α$ is sufficiently small.
We consider an i.i.d. random environment with a strong form of transience on the two dimensional integer lattice. Namely, the walk always moves forward in the y-direction. We prove a functional CLT for the quenched expected position of the random walk indexed by its level crossing times. We begin with a variation of the Martingale Central Limit Theorem. The main part of the paper checks the conditions of the theorem for our problem.
We consider a one-dimensional discrete symmetric random walk with a reflecting boundary at the origin. Generating functions are found for the 2- dimensional probability distribution P{Sn = x,max1?j?n Sn = a} of being at position x after n steps, while the maximal location that the walker has achieved during these n steps is a. We also obtain the familiar (marginal) 1-dimensional distribution for Sn = x, but more importantly that for max1?j?n Sj = a asymptotically at fixed a2/n. We are able to compute and compare the expectations and variances of the two one-dimensional distributions, finding t…
We show that for lazy simple random walks on finite spherically symmetric trees, the ratio of the mixing time and the relaxation time is bounded by a universal constant. Consequently, lazy simple random walks on any sequence of finite spherically symmetric trees do not exhibit pre-cutoff; this conclusion also holds for continuous-time simple random walks. This answers a question recently proposed by Gantert, Nestoridi, and Schmid. We also show that for lazy simple random walks on finite spherically symmetric trees, hitting times of vertices are (uniformly) non concentrated. Finally, we study t…
The paper is concerned with a new approach for the recurrence property of the oscillating process on $\mathbb{Z}$ in Kemperman's sense. In the case when the random walk is ascending on $\mathbb{Z}^-$ and descending on $\mathbb{Z}^+$, we determine the invariant measure of the embedded process of successive crossing times and then prove a necessary and sufficient condition for recurrence. Finally, we make use of this result to show that the general oscillating process is recurrent under some H{ö}lder-typed moment assumptions.
Motivated by problems in behavioural finance, we provide two explicit constructions of a randomized stopping time which embeds a given centered distribution $μ$ on integers into a simple symmetric random walk in a uniformly integrable manner. Our first construction has a simple Markovian structure: at each step, we stop if an independent coin with a state-dependent bias returns tails. Our second construction is a discrete analogue of the celebrated Azéma-Yor solution and requires independent coin tosses only when excursions away from maximum breach predefined levels. Further, this construction…
We investigate the long-term behavior of a random walker evolving on top of the simple symmetric exclusion process (SSEP) at equilibrium, in dimension one. At each jump, the random walker is subject to a drift that depends on whether it is sitting on top of a particle or a hole, so that its asymptotic behavior is expected to depend on the density $ρ\in [0, 1]$ of the underlying SSEP. Our first result is a law of large numbers (LLN) for the random walker for all densities $ρ$ except for at most two values $ρ_-, ρ_+ \in [0, 1]$. The asymptotic speed we obtain in our LLN is a monotone function of…
We consider a one-dimensional continuous time random walk with transition rates depending on an underlying autonomous simple symmetric exclusion process starting out of equilibrium. This model represents an example of a random walk in a slowly non-uniform mixing dynamic random environment. Under a proper space-time rescaling in which the exclusion is speeded up compared to the random walk, we prove a hydrodynamic limit theorem for the exclusion as seen by this walk and we derive an ODE describing the macroscopic evolution of the walk. The main difficulty is the proof of a replacement lemma for…
In the present paper, we study central limit theorems (CLTs) for non-symmetric random walks on nilpotent covering graphs from a point of view of discrete geometric analysis developed by Kotani and Sunada. We establish a semigroup CLT for a non-symmetric random walk on a nilpotent covering graph. Realizing the nilpotent covering graph into a nilpotent Lie group through a discrete harmonic map, we give a geometric characterization of the limit semigroup on the nilpotent Lie group. More precisely, we show that the limit semigroup is generated by the sub-Laplacian with a non-trivial drift on the n…
We establish an invariance principle for a one-dimensional random walk in a dynamical random environment given by a speed-change exclusion process. The jump probabilities of the walk depend on the configuration of the exclusion in a finite box around the walker. The environment starts from equilibrium. After a suitable space-time rescaling, the random walk converges to a sum of two independent processes, a Brownian motion and a Gaussian process with stationary increments.
In the present paper, as a continuation of our preceding paper [10], we study another kind of central limit theorems (CLTs) for non-symmetric random walks on nilpotent covering graphs from a viewpoint of discrete geometric analysis developed by Kotani and Sunada. We introduce a one-parameter family of random walks which interpolates between the original non-symmetric random walk and the symmetrized one. We first prove a semigroup CLT for the family of random walks by realizing the nilpotent covering graph into a nilpotent Lie group via discrete harmonic maps. The limiting diffusion semigroup i…
This paper studies Markov chains on the symmetric group $S_n$ where the transition probabilities are given by the Ewens distribution with parameter $θ>1$. The eigenvalues are identified to be proportional to the content polynomials of partitions. We show that the mixing time is bounded above by a constant depending only on the parameter if $θ$ is fixed. However, if it agrees with the number of permuted elements ($θ=n$), the sequence of chains has a total variation cutoff at $\frac{\log n}{\log 2}.$
We consider a model of a polymer in $\mathbb{Z}^{d+1}$, constrained to join 0 and a hyperplane at distance $N$. The polymer is subject to a quenched nonnegative random environment. Alternatively, the model describes crossing random walks in a random potential (see Zerner [Ann Appl. Probab. 8 (1998) 246--280] or Chapter 5 of Sznitman [Brownian Motion, Obstacles and Random Media (1998) Springer] for the original Brownian motion formulation). It was recently shown [Ann. Probab. 36 (2008) 1528--1583; Probab. Theory Related Fields 143 (2009) 615--642] that, in such a setting, the quenched and annea…
The Skorokhod Embedding problem is well understood when the underlying process is a Brownian motion. We examine the problem when the underlying is the simple symmetric random walk and when no external randomisation is allowed. We prove that any measure on Z can be embedded by means of a minimal stopping time. However, in sharp contrast to the Brownian setting, we show that the set of measures which can be embedded in a uniformly integrable way is strictly smaller then the set of centered probability measures: specifically it is a fractal set which we characterise as an iterated function system…
We prove an upper bound for the $\varepsilon$-mixing time of the symmetric exclusion process on any graph G, with any feasible number of particles. Our estimate is proportional to $\mathsf{T}_{\mathsf{RW}(G)}\ln(|V|/\varepsilon)$, where |V| is the number of vertices in G, and $\mathsf{T}_{\mathsf{RW}(G)}$ is the 1/4-mixing time of the corresponding single-particle random walk. This bound implies new results for symmetric exclusion on expanders, percolation clusters, the giant component of the Erdos-Renyi random graph and Poisson point processes in $\mathbb{R}^d$. Our technical tools include a …
We develop Stein's method for the half-normal distribution and apply it to derive rates of convergence in distributional limit theorems for three statistics of the simple symmetric random walk: the maximum value, the number of returns to the origin and the number of sign changes up to a given time $n$. We obtain explicit error bounds with the optimal rate $n^{-1/2}$ for both the Kolmogorov and the Wasserstein metric. In order to apply Stein's method, we compare the characterizing operator of the limiting half-normal distribution with suitable characterizations of the discrete approximating dis…
Several cycle lexicographical orders are found to describe the relative likelihood of elements of the random walks on the symmetric group generated by the conjugacy classes of transpositions, 3-cycles, and n-cycles. Spectral analysis finds sufficient time for the orders to hold. This partially answers a conjecture that the n-cycles are the least likely elements of the transposition walk on the symmetric group. A likelihood order contributes to understanding the total variation distance and separation distance for a random walk.
