v2: 27 pages, 12 figures. There is a major revision in the quantitative analysis. The qualitative results and conclusions are unchanged, with one exception: we show that the quantum Hall state embeddings, which exist for discrete values of the filling fraction, deform continuously into metallic state embeddings away from these filling fractions
We consider a holographic description of a system of strongly coupled fermions in 2+1 dimensions based on a D7-brane probe in the background of D3-branes, and construct stable embeddings by turning on worldvolume fluxes. We study the system at finite temperature and charge density, and in the presence of a background magnetic field. We show that Minkowski-like embeddings that terminate above the horizon describe a family of quantum Hall states with filling fractions that are parameterized by a single discrete parameter. The quantization of the Hall conductivity is a direct consequence of the topological quantization of the fluxes. When the magnetic field is varied relative to the charge density away from these discrete filling fractions, the embeddings deform continuously into black-hole-like embeddings that enter the horizon and that describe metallic states. We also study the thermodynamics of this system and show that there is a first order phase transition at a critical temperature from the quantum Hall state to the metallic state.
We compute the neutral bosonic excitation spectra of the holographic quantum Hall fluid described by the D3-D7' system. We find that the system is stable, gapped, and, in a range of parameters, exhibits a spectrum of low-lying excitations very similar to that of a quantum Hall fluid, including a magneto-roton excitation.
The Hall and longitudinal conductivities of a recently studied holographic model of a quantum Hall ferromagnet are computed using the Karch-O'Bannon technique. In addition, the low temperature entropy of the model is determined. The holographic model has a phase transition as the Landau level filling fraction is increased from zero to one. We argue that this phase transition allows the longitudinal conductivity to have features qualitatively similar to those of two dimensional electron gases in the integer quantum Hall regime. The argument also applies to the low temperature limit of the entro…
We analyze the neutral spectrum of the holographic quantum Hall fluid described by the D2-D8' model. As expected for a quantum Hall state, we find the system to be stable and gapped and that, at least over much of the parameter space, the lowest excitation mode is a magneto-roton. In addition, we find magneto-rotons in higher modes as well. We show that these magneto-rotons are direct consequences of level crossings between vector and scalar modes.
We construct a holographic model of a system of strongly-coupled fermions in 2+1 dimensions based on a D8-brane probe in the background of D2-branes. The Minkowski embeddings of the D8-brane represent gapped quantum Hall states with filling fraction one. By computing the conductivity and phase structure, we find results qualitatively similar to the experimental observations and also to the recent D3-D7' model.
The holographic Weyl semimetal is a model of a strongly coupled topological semi-metal. A topological quantum phase transition separates a topological phase with non-vanishing anomalous Hall conductivity from a trivial state. We investigate how this phase transition depends on the parameters of the scalar potential (mass and quartic self coupling) finding that the quantum phase transition persists for a large region in parameter space. We then compute the axial Hall conductivity. The algebraic structure of the axial anomaly predicts it to be 1/3 of the electric Hall conductivity. We find that …
We consider a phenomenological holographic model, inspired by the D3/D7 system with a 2+1 dimensional intersection, at finite chemical potential and magnetic field. At large 't Hooft coupling the system is unstable and needs regularization; the UV cutoff can be decoupled by considering a certain double scaling limit. At finite chemical potential the model exhibits a phase transition between states with filling fractions plus and minus one--half as the magnetic field is varied. By varying the parameters of the model, this phase transition can be made to happen at arbitrary values of the magneti…
By employing the holographic operator mixing technique to deal with coupled perturbations in the gauge/gravity duality, I numerically compute the real and imaginary parts of the diagonal and Hall AC conductivities in a strongly coupled quantum field theory dual to a bulk condensate of magnetic monopoles. The results obtained show that a conclusion previously derived in the literature, namely, the vanishing of holographic DC conductivities in 3-dimensional strongly coupled quantum field theories dual to a 4-dimensional bulk magnetic monopole condensate, also applies to the calculation of diagon…
In this paper, we study $(2+1)$-dimensional quantum anomalous Hall states, i.e. band insulators with quantized Hall conductance, using the exact holographic mapping. The exact holographic mapping is an approach to holographic duality which maps the quantum anomalous Hall state to a different state living in $(3+1)$-dimensional hyperbolic space. By studying topological response properties and the entanglement spectrum, we demonstrate that the holographic dual theory of a quantum anomalous Hall state is a $(3+1)$-dimensional topological insulator. The dual description enables a new characterizat…
The anomalous spin Hall conductivity in the holographic model of Dirac semimetals with two Dirac nodes protected by the crystal symmetry has been elaborated. Such system besides the chiral anomaly possesses another anomaly which is related to the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological charge of the system. The holographic model of the system contains matter action with two $U(1)$-gauge fields as well as the appropriate combination of the Chern-Simons gauge terms. We also allow for the coupling of two gauge fields {\it via} the kinetic mixing parametrised by the coupling $α$. The holographic approach in th…
The D3-probe-D7 brane system, oriented so as to have 2+1-dimensional Poincare symmetry, is argued to be the holographic representation of a strongly correlated fractional topological insulator which exhibits a zero-field quantized Hall effect with half-units of Hall conductivity. The phase diagram of the system with charge density and external magnetic field is found and, as well as charge gapped quantum Hall states, it exhibits metallic and semi-metallic phases with interesting behaviours. The relationship of this to other models of fractional topological insulators is discussed.
Starting with a holographic construction for a fractional quantum Hall state based on the D3-D7' system, we explore alternative quantization conditions for the bulk gauge fields. This gives a description of a quantum Hall state with various filling fractions. For a particular alternative quantization of the bulk gauge fields, we obtain a holographic anyon fluid in a vanishing background magnetic field. We show that this system is a superfluid, exhibiting the relevant gapless excitation.
Transitions among quantum Hall plateaux share a suite of remarkable experimental features, such as semi-circle laws and duality relations, whose accuracy and robustness are difficult to explain directly in terms of the detailed dynamics of the microscopic electrons. They would naturally follow if the low-energy transport properties were governed by an emergent discrete duality group relating the different plateaux, but no explicit examples of interacting systems having such a group are known. Recent progress using the AdS/CFT correspondence has identified examples with similar duality groups, …
A detailed numerical study of a recent proposal for exotic states of the D3-probe D5 brane system with charge density and an external magnetic field is presented. The state has a large number of coincident D5 branes blowing up to a D7 brane in the presence of the worldvolume electric and magnetic fields which are necessary to construct the holographic state. Numerical solutions have shown that these states can compete with the the previously known chiral symmetry breaking and maximally symmetric phases of the D3-D5 system. Moreover, at integer filling fractions, they are incompressible with in…
We use the holographic approach to compare the Hall viscosity $η_H$ and the angular momentum density ${\cal J}$ in gapless systems in $2+1$ dimensions at finite temperature. We start with a conformal fixed point and turn on a perturbation which breaks the parity and time reversal symmetries via gauge and gravitational Chern-Simons couplings in the bulk. While the ratio of $η_H$ and ${\cal J}$ shows some universal properties when the perturbation is slightly relevant, we find that the two quantities behave differently in general. In particular, $η_H$ depends only on infrared physics, while ${\c…
The holographic duality allows to construct and study models of strongly coupled quantum matter via dual gravitational theories. In general such models are characterized by the absence of quasiparticles, hydrodynamic behavior and Planckian dissipation times. One particular interesting class of quantum materials are ungapped topological semimetals which have many interesting properties from Hall transport to topologically protected edge states. We review the application of the holographic duality to this type of quantum matter including the construction of holographic Weyl semimetals, nodal lin…
In this letter we study the Hall conductivity in holographic models where translational invariance is broken by a lattice. We show that generic holographic theories will display a different temperature dependence in the Hall angle as to the DC conductivity. Our results suggest a general mechanism for obtaining an anomalous scaling of the Hall angle in strongly interacting quantum critical systems.
We find a new holographic description of strongly coupled defect field theories using probe D5 branes. We consider a system where a large number of probe branes, which are asymptotically D5 branes, blow up into a D7 brane suspended in the bulk of anti-de Sitter space. For a particular ratio of charge density to external magnetic field, so that the Landau level filling fraction per color is equal to one, the D7 brane exhibits an incompressible charge-gapped state with one unit of integer quantized Hall conductivity. The detailed configuration as well as ungapped, compressible configurations for…
We develop a general framework for computing the holographic 2-point functions and the corresponding conductivities in asymptotically locally AdS backgrounds with an electric charge density, a constant magentic field, and possibly non-trivial scalar profiles, for a broad class of Einstein-Maxwell-Axion-Dilaton theories, including certain Chern-Simons terms. Holographic renormalization is carried out for any theory in this class and the computation of the renormalized AC conductivities at zero spatial momentum is reduced to solving a single decoupled first order Riccati equation. Moreover, we d…
We calculate the Ohmic and Hall conductivities from linear response theory in a system consisting of the intersection of Nc Dp-branes and Nf << N_c Dq-branes. Agreement is found between previous results found in a macroscopic approach comparing induced currents with external electric fields. The issue of how to deal with mixed operators is raised. The retarded Green's function is given by a matrix that can be computed from the boundary action similarly to the Green's function for uncoupled operators.
We investigate the holographic DC and Hall conductivity in massive Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton (EMD) gravity. Two special EMD backgrounds are considered explicitly. One is dyonic Reissner-Nordstr$\ddot{o}$m-AdS (RN-AdS) geometry and the other one is hyperscaling violation AdS (HV-AdS) geometry. We find that the linear-T resistivity and quadratic-T inverse Hall angle can be simultaneously achieved in HV-AdS models, providing a hint to construct holographic models confronting with the experimental data of strange metal in future.
We study the AC optical and hall conductivities of Dp/Dq-branes intersections in the probe approximation and use sum-rules to study various associated transport coefficients. We determine that the presence of massive fundamental matter, as compared to massless fundamental matter described holographically by a theory with no dimensional defects, reduces the plasma frequency. We further show that this is not the case when the brane intersections include defects. We discuss in detail how to implement correctly the regularization of retarded Green's functions so that the dispersion relations are s…
We analyze the quasinormal modes of the D2-D8' model of 2+1-dimensional, strongly-coupled, charged fermions in a background magnetic field and at nonzero density. The model is known to include a quantum Hall phase with integer filling fraction. As expected, we find a hydrodynamical diffusion mode at small momentum and the nonzero-temperature holographic zero sound, which becomes massive above a critical magnetic field. We confirm the previously-known thermodynamic instability. In addition, we discover an instability at low temperature, large mass, and in a charge density and magnetic field ran…
Experimental data for fractional quantum Hall systems can to a large extent be explained by assuming the existence of a modular symmetry group commuting with the renormalization group flow and hence mapping different phases of two-dimensional electron gases into each other. Based on this insight, we construct a phenomenological holographic model which captures many features of the fractional quantum Hall effect. Using an SL(2,Z)-invariant Einstein-Maxwell-axio-dilaton theory capturing the important modular transformation properties of quantum Hall physics, we find dyonic diatonic black hole so…
We study a holographic model which exhibits a quantum phase transition from the strongly interacting Weyl semimetal phase to an insulating phase. In the holographic insulating phase there is a hard gap in the real part of frequency dependent diagonal conductivities. However, the anomalous Hall conductivity is nonzero at zero frequency, indicting that it is a Chern insulator. This holographic quantum phase transition is always of first order, signified by a discontinuous anomalous Hall conductivity at the phase transition, in contrast to the very continuous holographic Weyl semimetal/trivial se…
We show how a Hall viscosity induced by a magnetic field can be generated in strongly coupled theories with a holographic dual. This is achieved by considering parity-breaking higher derivative terms in the gravity dual. These terms couple the Riemann curvature tensor to the field strength of a gauge field dual to the charge current, and have an analog in the field theory side as a coupling between the "Euler current" and the electromagnetic field. As a concrete example, we study the effect of the new terms in the thermodynamic and transport properties of a strongly coupled magnetized plasma d…
We have modified the holographic model of Saremi and Son by using a charged black brane, instead of a neutral one, such that when the bulk pseudo scalar potential is made of quadratic and quartic terms, parity can still be broken spontaneously in the boundary theory. In our model, the 3+1 dimensional bulk has a pseudo scalar coupled to the gravitational Chern-Simons term in the anti de Sitter charged black brane back ground. Parity could be broken spontaneously in the bulk by the pseudo scalar hairy solution and give rise to non-zero Hall viscosity at the boundary theory.
In the strange metal phase of the high-$T_{c}$ cuprates, it is challenging to explain the linear temperature dependence of the in-plane resistivity and the quadratic temperature dependence of the inverse Hall angle. In this paper, we investigate the temperature dependence of the in-plane resistivity and inverse Hall angle in the nonlinear electrodynamics holographic model developed in our recent work. Maxwell electrodynamics and Born-Infeld electrodynamics are considered. Both cases support a wide spectrum of temperature scalings in parameter space. For Maxwell electrodynamics, the T-linear in…
We study general models of holographic superconductivity parametrized by four arbitrary functions of a neutral scalar field of the bulk theory. The models can accommodate several features of real superconductors, like arbitrary critical temperatures and critical exponents in a certain range, and perhaps impurities, boundary or thickness effects. We find analytical expressions for the critical exponents of the general model and show that they satisfy the Rushbrooke identity. An important subclass of models exhibits second order phase transitions. A study of the specific heat shows that general …
We compute AC electrical transport at quantum Hall critical points, as modeled by intersecting branes and gauge/gravity duality. We compare our results with a previous field theory computation by Sachdev, and find unexpectedly good agreement. We also give general results for DC Hall and longitudinal conductivities valid for a wide class of quantum Hall transitions, as well as (semi)analytical results for AC quantities in special limits. Our results exhibit a surprising degree of universality; for example, we find that the high frequency behavior, including subleading behavior, is identical for…
A holographic model of a quantum critical theory at a finite but low temperature, and finite density is studied. The model exhibits non-relativistic z=2 Schrödinger symmetry and is realized by the Anti-de-Sitter-Schwarzschild black hole in light-cone coordinates. Our approach addresses the electrical conductivities in the presence or absence of an applied magnetic field and contains a control parameter that can be associated to quantum tuning via charge carrier doping or an external field in correlated electron systems. The Ohmic resistivity, the inverse Hall angle, the Hall coefficient and th…
We study the spontaneous parity breaking and generating of Hall viscosity and angular momentum in holographic p+ip model, which can describe strongly-coupled chiral superfluid states in many quantum systems. The dual gravity theory, an SU(2) gauge field minimally coupled to Einstein gravity, is parity-invariant but allows a black hole solution with vector hair corresponding to a parity-broken superfluid state. We show that this state possesses a non-vanishing parity-odd transport coefficient -- Hall viscosity -- and an angular momentum density. We first develop an analytic method to solve this…
Based on the gauge/gravity correspondence, the hydrodynamic response coefficients, shear and Hall viscosities, have been studied. The holographic model of Einstein-Maxwell- AdS $(3+1)$-dimensional system additionally coupled with the another gauge field mimicking the {\it dark matter} sector, as well as, gravitational Chern-Simons term bounded with a dynamical scalar field, were taken into account. Condensation of the scalar field provides the parity violating term. Both shear and Hall viscosities have been calculated and their dependence on $α$ - the coupling constant between matter and {\it …
In (2+1)-dimensional systems with broken parity, there exists yet another transport coefficient, appearing at the same order as the shear viscosity in the hydrodynamic derivative expansion. In condensed matter physics, it is referred to as "Hall viscosity". We consider a simple holographic realization of a (2+1)-dimensional isotropic fluid with broken spatial parity. Using techniques of fluid/gravity correspondence, we uncover that the holographic fluid possesses a nonzero Hall viscosity, whose value only depends on the near-horizon region of the background. We also write down a Kubo's formula…
In this paper we consider the holographic DC and Hall conductivity in Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton in Gauss-Bonnet gravity with momentum dissipation. We analytically derived the DC conductivity and Hall conductivity from the black horizon data, and found that the conductivities are independent on the Gauss-Bonnet coupling. We also used the entropy function formalism to get the conductivities in terms of the charge of the black hole, even without knowing the explicit black hole solutions.
We examine transport in a holographic model in which the dynamics of the charged degrees of freedom is described by the nonlinear Dirac-Born-Infeld (DBI) action. Axionic scalar fields are included to break translational invariance and generate momentum dissipation in the system. Scaling exponents are introduced by using geometries which are nonrelativistic and hyperscaling-violating in the infrared. In the probe DBI limit the theory reproduces the anomalous temperature dependence of the resistivity and Hall angle of the cuprate strange metals, $ρ\sim T$ and $\cotΘ_H \sim T^2$. These scaling la…
We show that Horava-Lifshitz gravity theory can be employed as a covariant framework to build an effective field theory for the fractional quantum Hall effect that respects all the spacetime symmetries such as non-relativistic diffeomorphism invariance and anisotropic Weyl invariance as well as the gauge symmetry. The key to this formalism is a set of correspondence relations that maps all the field degrees of freedom in the Horava-Lifshitz gravity theory to external background (source) fields among others in the effective action of the quantum Hall effect, according to their symmetry transfor…
Classical SU(2) Yang-Mills theory in 3+1 dimensional anti-de Sitter space is known to provide a holographic dual to a 2+1 system that undergoes a superconducting phase transition. We study the electrical conductivity and spectral density of an isotropic superconducting phase. We show that the theory exhibits a pseudogap at low temperatures and a nonzero Hall conductivity. The Hall conductivity is possible because of spontaneous breaking of time reversal symmetry.
We explore the magnetic properties of the Fermi-like liquid represented by the D3-D7' system. The system exhibits interesting magnetic properties such as ferromagnetism and an anomalous Hall effect, which are due to the Chern-Simons term in the effective gravitational action. We investigate the spectrum of quasi-normal modes in the presence of a magnetic field and show that the magnetic field mitigates the instability towards a striped phase. In addition, we find a critical magnetic field above which the zero sound mode becomes massive.
In this paper we study a simple gravity model dual to a (2+1)-dimensional system with a boundary at finite charge density and temperature. In our naive AdS/BCFT extension of a well known AdS/CFT system a non-zero charge density must be supported by a magnetic field. As a result, the Hall conductivity is a constant inversely proportional to the coefficients of pertinent topological terms. Since the direct conductivity vanishes, such behaviors resemble that of a quantum Hall system with Fermi energy in the gap between the Landau levels. We further analyze the properties stemming from our hologra…
We study the AC electrical conductivity at zero temperature in a holographic model for a Weyl semimetal. At small frequencies we observe a linear dependence in the frequency. The model shows a quantum phase transition between a topological semimetal (Weyl semimetal phase) with a non vanishing anomalous Hall conductivity and a trivial semimetal. The AC conductivity has an intermediate scaling due to the presence of a quantum critical region in the phase diagram of the system. The phase diagram is reconstructed using the scaling properties of the conductivity. We compare with the experimental da…
We present three holographic constructions of fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) via string theory. The first model studies edge states in FQHE using supersymmetric domain walls in N=6 Chern-Simons theory. We show that D4-branes wrapped on CP^1 or D8-branes wrapped on CP^3 create edge states that shift the rank or the level of the gauge group, respectively. These holographic edge states correctly reproduce the Hall conductivity. The second model presents a holographic dual to the pure U(N)_k (Yang-Mills-)Chern-Simons theory based on a D3-D7 system. Its holography is equivalent to the level-…
We study parity-violating effects, particularly the generation of angular momentum density and its relation to the parity-odd and dissipationless transport coefficient Hall viscosity, in strongly-coupled quantum fluid systems in 2+1 dimensions using holographic method. We employ a class of 3+1-dimensional holographic models of Einstein-Maxwell system with gauge and gravitational Chern-Simons terms coupled to a dynamical scalar field. The scalar can condensate and break the parity spontaneously. We find that when the scalar condensates, a non-vanishing angular momentum density and an associated…
We study the Fermi level structure of 2+1-dimensional strongly interacting electron systems in external magnetic field using the AdS/CFT correspondence. The gravity dual of a finite density fermion system is a Dirac field in the background of the dyonic AdS-Reissner-Nordstrom black hole. In the probe limit the magnetic system can be reduced to the non-magnetic one, with Landau-quantized momenta and rescaled thermodynamical variables. We find that at strong enough magnetic fields, the Fermi surface vanishes and the quasiparticle is lost either through a crossover to conformal regime or through …

We study the response of a (2+1)-dimensional gauge theory to an external rotating electric field. In the strong coupling regime such system is formulated holographically in a top-down model constructed by intersecting D3- and D5-branes along 2+1 dimensions, in the quenched approximation, in which the D5-brane is a probe in the AdS_5 x S^5 geometry. The system has a non-equilibrium phase diagram with conductive and insulator phases. The external driving induces a rotating current due to vacuum polarization (in the insulator phase) and to Schwinger effect (in the conductive phase). For some part…
We use the AdS/CFT correspondence to compute the AC conductivities for a (2+1)-dimensional system of massless fundamental fermions coupled to (3+1)-dimensional Super Yang-Mills theory at strong coupling. We consider the system at finite charge density, with a constant electric field along the defect and an orthogonal magnetic field. The holographic model we employ is the well studied D3/probe-D5-brane system. There are two competing phases in this model: a phase with broken chiral symmetry favored when the magnetic field dominates over the charge density and the electric field and a chirally s…
We investigate properties of holographic strange metals in $p+2$-dimensions, generalizing the analysis performed in arXiv:0912.1061. The bulk spacetime is $p+2$-dimensional Lifshitz black hole, while the role of charge carriers is played by probe D-branes. We mainly focus on massless charge carriers, where most of the results can be obtained analytically. We obtain exact results for the free energy and calculate the entropy density, the heat capacity as well as the speed of sound at low temperature. We obtain the DC conductivity and DC Hall conductivity and find that the DC conductivity takes …
We study the Fermi level structure of (2+1)-dimensional strongly interacting electron systems in external magnetic field using the AdS/CFT correspondence. We find that at strong enough magnetic fields, the Fermi surface vanishes and the quasiparticle is lost either through a crossover to conformal regime or throug…
We study a strongly interacting, fermionic fluid in the presence of an applied magnetic field using a holographic framework. At low temperatures, translation symmetry is spontaneously broken and the resulting phase is a striped Hall fluid. Due to the magnetic field, an electric field applied parallel to the stripes causes the stripes to slide, a phenomenon we coin "Hall sliding." We also investigate the magneto-transport of the system in the presence of an explicit translation symmetry-breaking lattice which pins the stripes. Electrical properties are well represented by a hydrodynamical model…
We study the thermoelectric transport under shear strain in two spatial dimensional quantum matter using the holographic duality. General analytic formulae for the DC thermoelectric conductivities subjected to finite shear strain are obtained in terms of the black hole horizon data. Off-diagonal terms in the conductivity matrix appear also at zero magnetic field, resembling an emergent electronic nematicity which cannot nevertheless be identified with the presence of an anomalous Hall effect. For an explicit model study, we numerically construct a family of strained black holes and obtain the …
We study the DC conductivities of various holographic models using the open string metric (OSM), which is an effective metric geometrizing density and electromagnetic field effect. We propose a new way to compute the nonlinear conductivity using OSM. As far as the final conductivity formula is concerned, it is equivalent to the Karch-O'Bannon's real-action method. However, it yields a geometrical insight and technical simplifications. Especially, a real-action condition is interpreted as a regular geometry condition of OSM. As applications of the OSM method, we study several holographic models…
We consider a holographic model of chiral superfluidity whose bulk is Einstein Yang-Mills and compute viscosity and conductivity responses away from the probe limit. We calculate Hall viscosity and analyze its relationship to the superfluid density and the shift. We find that the relationship between these quantities derived from effective field theory at zero temperature persists for all temperatures: for $p\pm ip$ their ratio is equal to $\mp1/2$. At low temperatures the system develops a Lifshitz throat, indicating an anisotropic scaling symmetry in the infrared dynamics.
We compute the longitudinal and Hall conductivities in the parallel phase of the Sakai-Sugimoto model with a transverse magnetic field. We find that the conductivities behave as if the charge of the system is made out of two different types; one behaves as charge carriers flowing through a dissipative neutral medium, while the other does not feel the dissipation. We also investigate the case of an electric field parallel to the magnetic field and find that in this case the system behaves as a perfect conductor. Both of the unusual behaviors stem from the axial anomaly.
We discuss the mass gap in quantum Hall solitons (QHS) embedded in superstring theory. In particular, we give two holographic models which are obtained from D-brane configurations in type IIB superstring compactifications. The first one deals with the monolayered system in the D3/D7 brane set up. The second model corresponds to a multilayered system which is described by intersecting D5-branes wrapping a particular set of 3-cycles. In both models, we have shown that the mass gap is related to the filling factor.
We present a holographic model of a topological Weyl semimetal. A key ingredient is a time-reversal breaking parameter and a mass deformation. Upon varying the ratio of mass to time-reversal breaking parameter the model undergoes a quantum phase transition from a topologically nontrivial semimetal to a trivial one. The topological nontrivial semimetal is characterised by the presence of an anomalous Hall effect. The results can be interpreted in terms of the holographic renormalization group (RG) flow leading to restoration of time-reversal at the end point of the RG flow in the trivial phase.
We show that the relativistic gravity theory can offer a framework to formulate the non-relativistic effective field theory in a general coordinate invariant way. We focus on the parity violating case in 2+1 dimensions which is particularly appropriate for the study on quantum Hall effects and chiral superfluids. We discuss how the non-relativistic spacetime structure emerges from relativistic gravity. We present covariant maps and constraints that relate the field contents in the two theories, which also serve as the holographic dictionary in context of gauge/gravity duality. A low energy eff…
