Accurate knowledge of the non-linear dark-matter power spectrum is important for understanding the large-scale structure of the Universe, the statistics of dark-matter haloes and their evolution, and cosmological gravitational lensing. We analytically model the dark-matter power spectrum and its cross-power spectrum with dark-matter haloes. Our model extends the halo-model formalism, including realistic substructure population within individual dark-matter haloes and the scatter of the concentration parameter at fixed halo mass. We consider three prescriptions for the mass-concentration relation and two for the substructure distribution in dark-matter haloes. We show that this extension of the halo model mainly increases the predicted power on the small scales, and is crucial for proper modeling the cosmological weak-lensing signal due to low-mass haloes. Our extended formalism shows how the halo model approach can be improved in accuracy as one increases the number of ingredients that are calibrated from n-body simulations.
Halo-based models have been successful in predicting the clustering of matter. However, the validity of the postulate that the clustering is fully determined by matter inside haloes remains largely untested, and it is not clear a priori whether non-virialised matter might contribute significantly to the non-linear clustering signal. Here, we investigate the contribution of haloes to the matter power spectrum as a function of both scale and halo mass by combining a set of cosmological N-body simulations to calculate the contributions of different spherical overdensity regions, Friends-of-Friend…
We characterize the baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO) feature in halo two-point statistics using N-body simulations. We find that nonlinear damping of the BAO signal is less severe for halos in the mass range we investigate than for dark matter. The amount of damping depends weakly on the halo mass. The correlation functions show a mass-dependent drop of the halo clustering bias below roughly 90 Mpc/h, which coincides with the scale of the BAO trough. The drop of bias is 4% for halos with mass M>10^{14} Msun/h and reduces to roughly 2% for halos with mass M>10^{13} Msun/h. In contrast, halo b…
Clustering properties and peculiar velocities of halos in large-scale structure carry a wealth of cosmological information over a wide range of scales from linear to nonlinear scales. We use halo catalogs in a suite of high-resolution $N$-body simulations to construct mock catalogs of galaxies that resemble the SDSS-like luminous early-type galaxies at three redshift bins in the range $0.15\le z\le 0.7$. To do this we include 10 nuisance parameters to model variations in halo-galaxy connections for each redshift bin; the halo occupation distribution, and the spatial and velocity distributions …
The two-point clustering of dark matter halos is influenced by halo properties besides mass, a phenomenon referred to as halo assembly bias. Using the depth of the gravitational potential well, $V_{\rm max}$, as our secondary halo property, in this paper we present the first study of the scale-dependence assembly bias. In the large-scale linear regime, $r\geq10h^{-1}{\rm Mpc},$ our findings are in keeping with previous results. In particular, at the low-mass end ($M_{\rm vir}<M_{\rm coll}\approx10^{12.5}{\rm M}_{\odot}$), halos with high-$V_{\rm max}$ show stronger large-scale clustering relat…
The overwhelming foreground contamination is one of the primary impediments to probing the Epoch of Reionization (EoR) through measuring the redshifted 21 cm signal. Among various foreground components, radio halos are less studied and their impacts on the EoR observations are still poorly understood. In this work, we employ the Press-Schechter formalism, merger-induced turbulent re-acceleration model, and the latest SKA1-Low layout configuration to simulate the SKA "observed" images of radio halos. We calculate the one-dimensional power spectra from simulated images and find that radio halos …
We study the fluctuations in luminosity distance due to gravitational lensing produced both by galaxy halos and large scale voids. Voids are represented via a "Swiss cheese" model consisting of a \LambdaCDM Friedman-Robertson-Walker background in which a number of randomly distributed, spherical regions of comoving radius 35 Mpc are removed. A fraction of the removed mass is then placed on the shells of the spheres, in the form of randomly located halos, modeled with Navarro-Frenk-White profiles. The remaining mass is placed in the interior of the spheres, either smoothly distributed, or as ra…
The non-linear, scale-dependent bias in the mass distribution of galaxies and the underlying dark matter is a key systematic affecting the extraction of cosmological parameters from galaxy clustering. Using 95 million halos from the Millennium-XXL N-body simulation, we find that the mass bias is scale independent only for $k<0.1 h{\rm Mpc}^{-1}$ today ($z=0$) and for $k<0.2 h{\rm Mpc}^{-1}$ at $z=0.7$. We test analytic halo bias models against our simulation measurements and find that the model of Tinker et al. 2005 is accurate to better then 5% at $z=0$. However, the simulation results are be…
We study the dependence of surface mass density profiles, which can be directly measured by weak gravitational lensing, on the orientation of haloes with respect to the line-of-sight direction, using a suite of $N$-body simulations. We find that, when major axes of haloes are aligned with the line-of-sight direction, surface mass density profiles have higher amplitudes than those averaged over all halo orientations, over all scales from $0.1$ to $100\,\mathrm{Mpc}/h$ we studied. While the orientation dependence at small scales is ascribed to the halo triaxiality, our results indicate even stro…
We apply the nonlinear reconstruction method to simulated halo fields. For halo number density $2.77\times 10^{-2}$ $(h^{-1} {\rm Mpc})^{-3}$ at $z=0$, corresponding to the SDSS main sample density, we find the scale where the noise saturates the linear signal is improved to $k\gtrsim0.36\ h {\rm Mpc}^{-1}$, a factor of $2.29$ improvement in scale, or $12$ in number of linear modes. The improvement is less for higher redshift or lower halo density. We expect this to substantially improve the BAO accuracy of dense, low redshift surveys, including the SDSS main sample, 6dFGS and 21cm intensity m…
We examine the projected correlation of galaxies with mass from small scales (<few hundred kpc) where individual dark matter halos dominate, out to 15 Mpc where correlated large-scale structure dominates. We investigate these profiles as a function of galaxy luminosity and redshift. Selecting 0.8 million galaxies in the Deep Lens Survey, we use photometric redshifts and stacked weak gravitational lensing shear tomography out to radial scales of 1 degree from the centers of foreground galaxies. We detect correlated mass density from multiple halos and large-scale structure at radii larger than …
We investigate the gravitational effect of large-scale radiation perturbations on small-scale structure formation. In addition to making the growth of matter perturbations scale dependent, the free-streaming of radiation also affects the coupling between structure formation at small and large scales. We study this using Separate Universe N-body simulations to compute the (isotropized) squeezed-limit matter bispectrum and the linear halo bias. Our results show that the scale dependence in the growth of long-wavelength matter perturbations, caused by radiation, translates into these quantities a…
Halos of similar mass and redshift exhibit a large degree of variability in their differential properties, such as dark matter, hot gas, and stellar mass density profiles. This variability is an indicator of diversity in the formation history of these dark matter halos that is reflected in the coupling of scatters about the mean relations. In this work, we show that the strength of this coupling depends on the scale at which halo profiles are measured. By analyzing the outputs of the IllustrisTNG hydrodynamical cosmological simulations we report the radial- and mass-dependent couplings between…
Cold dark matter halos form within a smoothly distributed background of relic neutrinos -- at least some of which are massive and non-relativistic at late times. We calculate the accumulation of massive neutrinos around spherically collapsing cold dark matter halos in a cosmological background. We identify the physical extent of the "neutrino halo" in the spherical collapse model, which is large in comparison with the virial radius of the dark matter, and conditions under which neutrinos reaching the cold dark matter halo will remain bound to the halo at late times. We calculate the total neut…
This review analyzes the state and advancement of the dark matter halo concentrations over the last two decades. It begins with presenting the article that brought the field to the limelight and then follows through with other research works that studied the concentrations of dark matter haloes over the ages. Besides the discussion of the halo mass-concentration relation and its evolution, we examine the effects of cosmology, subhaloes and environment on the relation. In addition to theoretical halo concentrations, observational dark matter halo concentrations are also considered. This review …
We investigate unbound dark matter particles in halos by tracing particle trajectories in a simulation run to the far future (a = 100). We find that the traditional sum of kinetic and potential energies is a very poor predictor of which dark matter particles will eventually become unbound from halos. We also study the mass fraction of unbound particles, which increases strongly towards the edges of halos, and decreases significantly at higher redshifts. We discuss implications for dark matter detection experiments, precision calibrations of the halo mass function, the use of baryon fractions t…
We present mock DensePak Integral Field Unit (IFU) velocity fields, rotation curves, and halo fits for disc galaxies formed in spherical and triaxial cuspy dark matter haloes, and spherical cored dark matter haloes. The simulated galaxies are "observed" under a variety of realistic conditions to determine how well the underlying dark matter halo can be recovered and to test the hypothesis that cuspy haloes can be mistaken for cored haloes. We find that the appearance of the velocity field is distinctly different depending on the underlying halo type. We also find that we can successfully recov…
We study the properties of dark matter haloes in a wide range of modified gravity models, namely, $f(R)$, DGP, and interacting dark energy models. We study the effects of modified gravity and dark energy on the internal properties of haloes, such as the spin and the structural parameters. We find that $f(R)$ gravity enhance the median value of the Bullock spin parameter, but could not detect such effects for DGP and coupled dark energy. $f(R)$ also yields a lower median sphericity and oblateness, while coupled dark energy has the opposite effect. However, these effects are very small. We then …
In this paper, we analyze the dynamical evolution of quintessence dark energy induced by the collapse of dark matter halos. Different from other previous studies, we develop a numerical strategy which allows us to calculate the dark energy evolution for the entire history of the spherical collapse of dark matter halos, without the need of separate treatments for linear, quasi-linear and nonlinear stages of the halo formation. It is found that the dark energy perturbations evolve with redshifts, and their specific behaviors depend on the quintessence potential as well as the collapsing process.…
In this paper, we analysed the halos and voids properties of a GR-based N-body simulation carried out at redshifts z= 0.0 and z= 0.8 as differences between dynamical dark energy models (namely PL and CPL) with respect to LCDM. Analysing the halos demonstrates that both models, PL and CPL, behave like LCDM, despite the velocity dispersion of halos was more sensitive to the dynamical dark energy model. In addition, a void finder was developed to extract the properties of voids from simulated data. Further statistical model on voids confirms that the PL model produces larger voids. In summary, ou…
We present $\texttt{matryoshka}$, a suite of neural network based emulators and accompanying Python package that have been developed with the goal of producing fast and accurate predictions of the nonlinear galaxy power spectrum. The suite of emulators consists of four linear component emulators, from which fast linear predictions of the power spectrum can be made, allowing all nonlinearities to be included in predictions from a nonlinear boost component emulator. The linear component emulators includes an emulator for the matter transfer function that produces predictions in $\sim 0.0004 \ \m…
We explore the cosmological halo-to-halo scatter of the distribution of mass within dark matter halos utilizing a well-resolved statistical sample of clusters from the cosmological Millennium simulation. We find that at any radius, the spherically-averaged dark matter density of a halo (corresponding to the "smooth-component") and its logarithmic slope are well-described by a Gaussian probability distribution. At small radii (within the scale radius), the density distribution is fully determined by the measured Gaussian distribution in halo concentrations. The variance in the radial distributi…
We describe a methodology to accurately compute halo mass functions, progenitor mass functions, merger rates and merger trees in non-cold dark matter universes using a self-consistent treatment of the generalized extended Press-Schechter formalism. Our approach permits rapid exploration of the subhalo population of galactic halos in dark matter models with a variety of different particle properties or universes with rolling, truncated, or more complicated power spectra. We make detailed comparisons of analytically derived mass functions and merger histories with recent warm dark matter cosmolo…
Dark matter halos of sub-solar mass are the first bound objects to form in cold dark matter theories. In this article, I discuss the present understanding of "microhalos'', their role in structure formation, and the implications of their potential presence, in the interpretation of dark matter experiments.
The standard cosmological paradigm currently lacks a detailed account of physics in the dark sector, the dark matter and energy that dominate cosmic evolution. In this paper, we consider the distinguishing factors between three alternative models - warm dark matter, quintessence and coupled dark matter-energy - and \lcdm{} through numerical simulations of cosmological structure formation. Key halo statistics - halo spin/velocity alignment between large-scale structure and neighboring haloes, halo formation time and migration - were compared across cosmologies within the redshift range 0$\leq$$…
We present an analytic model for the local bias of dark matter halos in a LCDM universe. The model uses the halo mass density instead of the halo number density and is searched for various halo mass cuts, smoothing lengths, and redshift epoches. We find that, when the logarithmic density is used, the second-order polynomial can fit the numerical relation between the halo mass distribution and the underlying matter distribution extremely well. In this model the logarithm of the dark matter density is expanded in terms of log halo mass density to the second order. The model remains excellent for…
Dark matter is an important ingredient of galaxies, as was recognised early on by Ken Freeman himself! Evidence for dark matter halos is still indirect, based on analysing motions of tracers such as gas and stars. In a sense the visible galaxy is the mask through which we can study the dark matter. Light rays are also sensitive to gravitational fields, and dark haloes cause observable gravitational lensing effects. There are three regimes: microlensing (which probes the clumpiness of dark matter haloes), strong lensing (sensitive to the inner mass distribution) and weak lensing (which can prob…
A cylindrical model for the dark matter halo of disk galaxies is developed. At the center of the cylinder, in the plane perpendicular to the long axis, the rotation curve is constant for distances much less than the cylinder length and Keplerian at much greater distances. The rotation curve is equivalent to the spherical truncated flat (TF) profile, a model derived empirically from the radial velocity dispersion of the Milky Way dark halo. It is shown that an isothermal, self-gravitating cylinder of length 89 kpc can account for the observed radial velocity dispersion of the Milky Way dark hal…
We study the distribution of intragroup dark matter in small groups of dark matter halos of galaxy-like size in a LCDM cosmology. These groups are identified using a physical criterion and may be an appropriate representation of small galaxy groups. We quantify the amount of intragroup dark matter and characterize its distribution. We find that compact associations of halos, as well as those intermediate and loose groups, have rather flat intragroup dark matter profiles with logarithmic slopes of gamma ~0 and ~-0.2$, respectively. Hence, the intragroup dark matter of these halo systems does no…
A long-standing issue in peculiar velocity cosmology is whether the halo/galaxy velocity bias $b_v=1$ at large scale. The resolution of this important issue must resort to high precision cosmological simulations. However, this is hampered by another long-standing `sampling artifact' problem in volume weighted velocity measurement. We circumvent this problem with a hybrid approach. We first measure statistics free of sampling artifact, then link them to volume weighted statistics in theory, finally solve for the velocity bias. $b_v$ determined by our method is not only free of sampling artifact…
We study the clustering of the highest-z galaxies (from ~ $0.1$ to a few tens Mpc scales) using the BLUETIDES simulation and compare it to current observational constraints from Hubble legacy and Hyper Suprime Cam (HSC) fields (at $z=6-7.2$). With a box length of $400$ $Mpc/h$ on each side and $0.7$ trillion particles, BLUETIDES is the largest high resolution cosmological hydrodynamic simulation to date ideally suited for studies of high-z galaxies. We find that galaxies with magnitude $m_{UV}<27.7$ have a bias ($b_g$) of $8.1\pm 1.2$ at $z=8$, and typical halo masses $M_H \gtrsim 6\times10^{1…
We study the imprint of Dark Energy on the density profile of Dark Matter halos using a set of high-resolution large volume cosmological N-body simulations from the Dark Energy Universe Simulation Series (DEUSS). We first focus on the analysis of the goodness-of-fit of the Navarro-Frenk-White (NFW) profile which we find to vary with halo mass and redshift. We also find that the fraction of halos ill-fitted by NFW varies with cosmology, thus indicating that the mass assembly of halos with perturbed density profiles carries a characteristic signature of Dark Energy. To access this information in…
The shape of dark matter haloes plays a critical role in constraining cosmology with upcoming large-scale structure surveys. In this paper, we study the correlations between the triaxial shapes and formation histories in dark matter haloes in the MultiDark Planck 2 N-body cosmological simulation. We find that halo ellipticity is strongly correlated with halo properties that serve as proxies of halo formation history, such as halo concentration and the peak-centroid offset. In particular, the correlation between halo ellipticity and halo concentration is nearly independent of the halo density p…
The apparent presence of large core radii in Low Surface Brightness galaxies has been claimed as evidence in favor of warm dark matter. Here we show that WDM halos do not have cores that are large fractions of the halo size: typically, r_core/r_200 < 0.001. This suggests an astrophysical origin for the large cores observed in these galaxies, as has been argued by other authors.
Baryonic physical processes could leave non-negligible imprint on cosmic matter distribution pattern. Series of high precision simulation data sets with identical initial condition are employed for count-in-cell (CIC) analysis, including one N-body dark matter run, one with adiabatic gas only and one with dissipative processes. Variances and higher order correlation functions of dark matter and gas are estimated. It is found that baryon physical processes mainly affected dark matter distribution at scales less than $1h^{-1}$Mpc. In comparison with the pure dark matter run, adiabatic process al…
$Λ$CDM-model predicts an excess of dark halos compared to the observations. The excess is seen from the estimates of the virialized mass inside the Local Supercluster and its surroundings. It is shown that account for cosmological velocity fluctuations in the process of formation of the population of dark halos it is possible to eliminate this contradiction remaining within the framework of the $Λ$CDM cosmology. Based on the formalism of Press and Schechter, we suggest a model of formation of dark halo population which takes into account the kinematic effects in the dark matter. The model allo…
In this paper, we present a simulation method within the two-component spherical collapse model to investigate dark energy perturbations associated with the formation of dark matter halos. The realistic mass accretion history of a dark matter halo taking into account its fast and slow growth is considered by imposing suitable initial conditions and isotropized virializations for the spherical collapse process. The dark energy component is treated as a perfect fluid described by two important parameters, the equation of state parameter $w$ and the sound speed $c_s$. Quintessence models with $w>…
We analyse the evolution of scalar field dark energy in the spherical halos of dark matter at the late stages of formation of gravitationally bound systems in the expanding Universe. The dynamics of quintessential dark energy at the center of dark matter halo strongly depends on the value of effective sound speed $c_s$ (in units of speed of light). If $c_s\sim1$ (classical scalar field) then the dark energy in the gravitationally bound systems is only slightly perturbed and its density is practically the same as in cosmological background. The dark energy with small value of sound speed ($c_s<…
We investigate the building of unified models that can predict the matter-density power spectrum and the two-point correlation function from very large to small scales, being consistent with perturbation theory at low $k$ and with halo models at high $k$. We use a Lagrangian framework to re-interpret the halo model and to decompose the power spectrum into "2-halo" and "1-halo" contributions, related to "perturbative" and "non-perturbative" terms. We describe a simple implementation of this model and present a detailed comparison with numerical simulations, from $k \sim 0.02$ up to $100 h$Mpc$^…
In this Letter we explore the effects of the scattering of photons incident on a dark matter halo through their interaction with either electrons or photons produced by dark matter annihilation. Particularly, we examine the effects of this scattering upon the observed spectrum of a distant AGN or of the Cosmic Microwave Background. Our results indicate that ultra-compact mini halos and other dense dark matter clumps can induce an observable Comptonisation of AGN spectra as well as a Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect (SZE) with an optical depth similar to that attained by thermal electrons in the Coma …
We use the "Millennium Simulation" to study the mass function of accreted sub-halos during merger events in the dark halo assembly history. Our study includes three kinds of sub-halo mergers: (1) mergers that happen to the main progenitor of dark halos; (2) mergers that happen on the entire merging history tree of dark halos; and (3) mergers that leave identifiable sub-halos in present-day dark halos. We estimate the unevolved sub-halo mass functions (USMFs), for which sub-halo masses are measured at the times of their accretion. For sub-halos that merge into the main branch of a present-day d…
We investigate the effects of halo ellipticity and alignment with larger-scale structure on the galaxy correlation function. We base our analysis on the galaxy formation models of Guo et al. (2011), run on the Millennium Simulations. We quantify the importance of these properties of the galaxy distribution by randomizing the angular positions of satellite galaxies within haloes, either coherently or individually, while keeping the distance to their respective central galaxies fixed. We find that the effect of disrupting the alignment with larger-scale structure is a ~2 per cent decrease in the…
We investigate the feasibility of extracting the gravitational nanolensing signal due to the presence of subsolar mass halos within galaxy-sized dark matter halos. We show that subsolar mass halos in a lensing galaxy can cause strong nanolensing events with shorter durations and smaller amplitudes than microlensing events caused by stars. We develop techniques that can be used in future surveys such as Pan-STARRS, LSST and OMEGA to search for the nanolensing signal from subsolar mass halos.
In this paper, we investigate the dark matter halo density profile of M33. We find that the HI rotation curve of M33 is best described by a NFW dark matter halo density profile model, with a halo concentration of cvir = 4.0\pm1.0 and a virial mass of Mvir = (2.2\pm0.1)\times10^11 Msun. We go on to use the NFW concentration (cvir)of M33, along with the values derived for other galaxies (as found in the literature), to show that cvir correlates with both spiral arm pitch angle and supermassive black hole mass.
We derive an estimate of the rate of formation of dark matter halos per unit volume as a function of the halo mass and redshift of formation. Analytical estimates of the number density of dark matter halos are useful in modeling several cosmological phenomena. We use the excursion set formalism for computing the formation rate of dark matter halos. We use an approach that allows us to differentiate between major and minor mergers, as this is a pertinent issue for semi-analytic models of galaxy formation. We compute the formation rate for the Press-Schechter and the Sheth-Tormen mass function. …
The interpretation of upcoming weak gravitational lensing surveys depends critically on our understanding of the matter power spectrum on scales $k < 10 h/\mathrm{Mpc}$, where baryonic processes are important. We study the impact of galaxy formation processes on the matter power spectrum using a halo model that treats the stars and gas separately from the dark matter distribution. We use empirical constraints from X-ray observations (hot gas) and halo occupation distribution modelling (stars) for the baryons. Since X-ray observations cannot generally measure the hot gas content outside $r_\mat…
We study the density profile of a dwarf halo in the decaying dark matter (DDM) cosmology, using a new algorithm that resolves halo density profiles down to the innermost $700$ pc robustly with high efficiency. Following Schwarzschild's orbit-based method, we have also developed a simplified model to calculate the DDM halo density profiles, which agree remarkably well with those from N-body simulations. Both zoom-in simulations and the simplified model reveal that dark matter decays lead to the flattening of central density and overall reduction of density in dwarf halos, and the underlying phy…
We present "sheet+release" simulations that reliably follow the evolution of dark matter structure at and below the dark matter free-streaming scale, where instabilities in traditional N-body simulations create a large population of spurious artificial haloes. Our simulations sample a large range of power-spectrum cutoff functions, parameterized through the half-mode scale $k_{\rm{hm}}$ and a slope parameter $β$. This parameter space can represent many non-cold dark matter models, including thermal relic warm dark matter, sterile-neutrinos, fuzzy dark matter, and a significant fraction of ETHO…
Radio halos are diffuse synchrotron sources on scales of ~1 Mpc that are found in merging clusters of galaxies, and are believed to be powered by electrons re-accelerated by the merger-driven turbulence. We present measurements of extended radio emission on similarly large scales in two clusters of galaxies hosting cool cores: Abell 2390 and Abell 2261. The analysis is based on interferometric imaging with the JVLA, VLA and GMRT. We present detailed radio images of the targets, subtract the compact emission components, and measure the spectral indices for the diffuse components. The radio emis…
We provide a quantitative analysis of the halo model in the context of massive neutrino cosmologies. We discuss all the ingredients necessary to model the non-linear matter and cold dark matter power spectra and compare with the results of N-body simulations that incorporate massive neutrinos. Our neutrino halo model is able to capture the non-linear behavior of matter clustering with a $\sim 20\%$ accuracy up to very non-linear scales of $k=10~h/$Mpc (which would be affected by baryon physics). The largest discrepancies arise in the range $k=0.5-1~h/$Mpc where the 1-halo and 2-halo terms are …
A second galaxy ``missing dark matter" (NGC1052-DF4) has been recently reported. Here we show, using the location of the Tip of the Red Giant Branch (TRGB), that the distance to this galaxy is 14.2+-0.7 Mpc. This locates the galaxy 6 Mpc closer than previously determined. We also analyse the distances to the brightest galaxies in the field-of-view (FOV) of NGC1052. We find this field is populated by two groups of galaxies in projection: one dominated by NGC1052 and NGC1047 at ~19 Mpc and another group containing NGC1042 and NGC1035 (as well as [KKS2000]04 and NGC1052-DF4) at ~13.5 Mpc. At a di…
We use the IllustrisTNG (TNG) simulations to explore the galaxy-halo connection as inferred from state-of-the-art cosmological, magnetohydrodynamical simulations. With the high mass resolution and large volume achieved by combining the 100 Mpc (TNG100) and 300 Mpc (TNG300) volumes, we establish the mean occupancy of central and satellite galaxies and their dependence on the properties of the dark matter haloes hosting them. We derive best-fitting HOD parameters from TNG100 and TNG300 for target galaxy number densities of $\bar{n}_g = 0.032\,h^3$Mpc$^{-3}$ and $\bar{n}_g = 0.016\,h^3$Mpc$^{-3}$…
We perform cosmological simulations of the intergalactic medium (IGM) at redshift z ~ 3 using the numerical gravity-hydrodynamics codes GADGET-3 and Enzo for the purpose of modelling the gaseous environments of galaxies. We identify haloes in the simulations using three different algorithms. Different rank orderings of the haloes by mass result, introducing a limiting factor in identifying haloes with observed galaxies. We also compare the physical properties of the gas between the two codes, focussing primarily on the gas outside the virial radius, motivated by recent HI absorption measuremen…
We investigate the effects of intrinsic alignments (IA) of dark-matter halo shapes on cosmic density and velocity fields from cluster to cosmic scales beyond 100 Mpc/h. Besides the density correlation function binned by the halo orientation angle which was used in the literature, we introduce, for the first time, the corresponding two velocity statistics, the angle-binned pairwise infall momentum and momentum correlation function. Using large-volume, high-resolution N-body simulations, we measure the alignment statistics of density and velocity, both in real and redshift space. We find that th…
We investigate from the fractal viewpoint the way in which the dark matter is grouped at z = 0 in the Millennium dark matter cosmological simulation. The determination of the cross to homogeneity in the Millennium Simulation data is described from the behaviour of the fractal dimension and the lacunarity. We use the sliding window technique to calculate the fractal mass-radius dimension, the pre-factor F and the lacunarity of this fractal relation. Besides, we determinate the multi-fractal dimension and the lacunarity spectrum, including their dependence with radial distance. This calculations…
We present measurements of the small-scale (0.1<~ r <~ 1 Mpc/h) quasar two-point correlation function at z>2.9, for a flux-limited (i<21) sample of 15 binary quasars compiled by Hennawi et al. (2009). The amplitude of the small-scale clustering increases from z ~ 3 to z ~ 4. The small-scale clustering amplitude is comparable to or lower than power-law extrapolations (with slope gamma=2) from the large-scale correlation function of the i<20.2 quasar sample from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. Using simple prescriptions relating quasars to dark matter halos, we model the observed small-scale clust…
In this paper, we consider the problem of the evolution of the disk subsystem of galaxies in view of the halo. To this end, we have studied the dependence of the evolution of a non-linearly non-radially disk oscillating in its plane depending on the basic parameters of the dark matter halo numerically. The dark matter halo stabilizes the instabilities in the plane of the disk, but destabilizes its vertical oscillations. The global disk structure is dependent strongly on the mass and shape of the of dark matter halo. The evolutionary dependence of the oscillation process of a self-gravitating d…
Cosmological $N$-body simulations of the dark matter component of the universe typically use initial conditions with a fixed power spectrum and random phases of the density field, leading to structure consistent with the local distribution of galaxies only in a statistical sense. It is, however, possible to infer the initial phases which lead to the configuration of galaxies and clusters that we see around us. We analyse the CSiBORG suite of 101 simulations, formed by constraining the density field within 155 Mpc$/h$ with dark matter particle mass $4.38\times10^9 M_\odot$, to quantify the degr…
