In this paper, we consider the problem of the evolution of the disk subsystem of galaxies in view of the halo. To this end, we have studied the dependence of the evolution of a non-linearly non-radially disk oscillating in its plane depending on the basic parameters of the dark matter halo numerically. The dark matter halo stabilizes the instabilities in the plane of the disk, but destabilizes its vertical oscillations. The global disk structure is dependent strongly on the mass and shape of the of dark matter halo. The evolutionary dependence of the oscillation process of a self-gravitating disk versus the indicated parameters of the dark matter halo are constructed.
We use surface brightness contour maps of nearby edge-on spiral galaxies to determine whether extended bright radio halos are common. In particular, we test a recent model of the spatial structure of the diffuse radio continuum by Subrahmanyan and Cowsik which posits that a substantial fraction of the observed high-latitude surface brightness originates from an extended Galactic halo of uniform emissivity. Measurements of the axial ratio of emission contours within a sample of normal spiral galaxies at 1500 MHz and below show no evidence for such a bright, extended radio halo. Either the Galax…
The absence of stellar disc truncations in low-inclined spiral galaxies has been a matter of debate in the last decade. Disc truncations are often observed in highly inclined galaxies but no obvious detection of this feature has so far been made in face-on spirals. Here we show, using a simple exponential disc plus stellar halo model based on current observational constraints, that truncations in face-on projections occur at surface brightness levels comparable to the brightness of stellar haloes at the same radial distance. In this sense, stellar haloes outshine the galaxy disc at the expecte…
We present our XMM-Newton observation of the fastest rotating spiral galaxy UGC 12591. We detect hot gas halo emission out to 110 kpc from the galaxy center, and constrain the halo gas mass to be smaller than 3.5e11 solar masses. We also measure the temperature of the hot gas as T=0.64\pm0.03 keV. Combining our X-ray constraints and the near-infrared and radio measurements in the literature, we find a baryon mass fraction of 0.03-0.04 in UGC 12591, suggesting a missing baryon mass of 75% compared with the cosmological mean value. Combined with another recent measurement in NGC 1961, the result…
The results of numerical simulations of the dynamics of galactic disks, which are submerged into nonaxisymmetric dark massive halo are discussed. Galaxy disks dynamics in the nonaxisymmetric (triaxial) dark halo were investigated in detail by the high resolution numerical hydrodynamical methods (TVD \& SPH) and N-body models. The long-lived two arms spiral structure generates for a wide range of parameters. The spiral structure is global and number of turns can be 2-3 in depends of model parameters. Morphology and kinematics of spiral structures were investigated in depends of the halo and the…
We present the results of a kinematic study of planetary nebulae in the extreme outskirts of two spiral galaxies, M83 (NGC 5236) and M94 (NGC 4736). We find that in the inner regions of the galaxies, the vertical velocity dispersion (sigma_z) falls off exponentially with the light, as expected for a constant mass-to-light ratio, constant thickness disk. However, starting at four optical scale lengths, sigma_z asymptotes out at roughly 20 km/s. Our analysis finds evidence for significant flaring in the outer regions as well, especially in M94. These observations are in excellent agreement with …
Radio continuum observations allow to reveal the magnetic field structure in the disk and halo of nearby spiral galaxies, their magnetic field strength and vertical scale heights. The spiral galaxies studied so far show a similar magnetic field pattern which is of spiral shape along the disk plane and X-shaped in the halo, sometimes accompanied by strong vertical fields above and below the central region of the disk. The strength of the halo field is comparable to that of the disk. The total and turbulent magnetic field strength is (weakly) increasing with the star formation. There are, howeve…
In order to address the question of whether spiral disturbances in galaxy discs are gravitationally coupled to the halo, we conduct simulations of idealized models of disc galaxies. We compare growth rates of spiral instabilities in identical mass models in which the halo is held rigid or is represented by particles drawn from an equilibrium distribution function. We examine cases of radial and azimuthal bias in the halo velocity ellipsoid in one of our models, and an isotropic velocity distribution in both. We find at most marginal evidence for an enhanced growth rate of spiral modes caused b…
We employ very high resolution simulations of isolated Milky Way-like galaxies to study the effect of triaxial dark matter haloes on exponential stellar discs. Non-adiabatic halo shape changes can trigger two-armed grand-design spiral structures which extend all the way to the edge of the disc. Their pattern speed coincides with the inner Lindblad resonance indicating that they are kinematic density waves which can persist up to several Gyr. In dynamically cold discs, grand-design spirals are swing amplified and after a few Gyr can lead to the formation of (multi-armed) transient recurrent spi…
Using $N$-body simulations ($N\sim 10^6 - 10^7$), we examine how a non-axisymmetric dark halo affects the dynamical evolution of the structure in collisionless (stellar) discs. We demonstrate how the model parameters such as mass of the halo, initial conditions in the disc and the halo axes ratio affect morphology and kinematics of the stellar discs. We show that a non-axisymmetric halo can generate a large-scale spiral density pattern in the embedded stellar disc. The pattern is observed in the disc for many periods of its revolution, even if the disc is gravitationally over-stable. The growt…
We utilize Young's algorithm to model the adiabatic compression of the dark matter haloes of galaxies in the THINGS survey to determine the relationship between the halo fit to the rotation curve and the corresponding primordial halo prior to compression. Young's algorithm conserves radial action and angular momentum, resulting in less halo compression than more widely utilized approximations. We find that estimates of the parameters of the NFW haloes fit to the current dark matter distribution systematically overestimate the concentration and underestimate the virial velocity of the correspon…
We present the analysis of the XMM-Newton data of the Circum-Galactic Medium of MASsive Spirals (CGM-MASS) sample of six extremely massive spiral galaxies in the local Universe. All the CGM-MASS galaxies have diffuse X-ray emission from hot gas detected above the background extending $\sim(30-100)\rm~kpc$ from the galactic center. This doubles the existing detection of such extended hot CGM around massive spiral galaxies. The radial soft X-ray intensity profile of hot gas can be fitted with a $β$-function with the slope typically in the range of $β=0.35-0.55$. This range, as well as those $β$ …
This thesis investigates the dynamical effect of two structural components of disk galaxies, namely, the dark matter halo and the interstellar gas on the origin and persistence issue of spiral structure in disk galaxies through theoretical modeling and numerical calculations. These studies have been carried out under two well-known paradigm for generation of spiral arms, namely, the density wave theory and the small-scale material arm generated by swing amplification. The basic theoretical model of the galactic disk used involves gravitationally-coupled two-component system (stars and gas) emb…
An overwhelming majority of galactic spiral arms trail with respect to the rotation of the galaxy, though a small sample of leading spiral arms has been observed. The formation of these leading spirals is not well understood. Here we show, using collisionless $N$-body simulations, that a barred disc galaxy in a retrograde dark matter halo can produce long-lived ($\sim3$ Gyr) leading spiral arms. Due to the strong resonant coupling of the disc to the halo, the bar slows rapidly and spiral perturbations are forced ahead of the bar. We predict that such a system, if observed, will also host a dar…
The rotation of the galactic halos is a fascinating topic which is still waiting to be addressed. Planck data has shown the existence of a temperature asymmetry towards the halo of several nearby galaxies, such as M31, NGC 5128, M33, M81, and M82. However, the cause of this asymmetry is an open problem. A possibility to explain the observed effect relies on the presence of "cold gas clouds" populating the galactic halos, which may be the answer to the so-called missing baryon problem. Here, we present a technique to estimate an upper limit to the rotational velocity of the halo of some nearby …
Low surface brightness (LSB) galaxies are dominated by dark matter halo from the innermost radii; hence they are ideal candidates to investigate the influence of dark matter on different dynamical aspects of spiral galaxies. Here, we study the effect of dark matter halo on grand-design, m = 2, spiral modes in a galactic disk, treated as a collisionless system, by carrying out a global modal analysis within the WKB approximation. First, we study a superthin, LSB galaxy UGC 7321 and show that it does not support discrete global spiral modes when modeled as a disk-alone system or as a disk plus d…
We seek the conditions for a {\it steady} mean field galactic dynamo. The parameter set is reduced to those appearing in the $α^2$ and $α/ω$ dynamo, namely velocity amplitudes, and the ratio of sub-scale helicity to diffusivity. The parameters can be allowed to vary on conical spirals. We analyze the mean field dynamo equations in terms of scale invariant logarithmic spiral modes and special exact solutions. Compatible scale invariant gravitational spiral arms are introduced and illustrated in an appendix, but the detailed dynamical interaction with the magnetic field is left for another work.…
In this paper we suggest the existence in the central regions of spiral galaxies of collisionless, scale-free, rigidly rotating, self-gravitating discs with spiral symmetry. Such discs must be truncated at a finite radius, and they must be stabilized and rendered self-similar by a suitable halo. The halo and the rotating disc share the self-similar class and must form together to arrive at the suggested state. We make comparisons with the well-known rigidly rotating, Kalnajs discs; one of which is axi-symmetric and finite while the other is infinite and decomposed into spiral modes. We find th…
We present 21-cm observations and models of the neutral hydrogen in NGC 4565, a nearby, edge-on spiral galaxy, as part of the Westerbork Hydrogen Accretion in LOcal GAlaxieS (HALOGAS) survey. These models provide insight concerning both the morphology and kinematics of HI above, as well as within, the disk. NGC 4565 exhibits a distinctly warped and asymmetric disk with a flaring layer. Our modeling provides no evidence for a massive, extended HI halo. We see evidence for a bar and associated radial motions. Additionally, there are indications of radial motions within the disk, possibly associa…
It is commonly believed that galaxies use, throughout the Hubble time, a very small fraction of the baryons associated to their dark matter halos to form stars. This so-called low "star formation efficiency" $f_\star\equiv M_\star/f_{\rm b} M_{\rm halo}$, where $f_{\rm b}\equivΩ_{\rm b}/Ω_{\rm c}$ is the cosmological baryon fraction, is expected to reach its peak at nearly $L^\ast$ (at efficiency $\approx 20\%$) and decline steeply at lower and higher masses. We have tested this using a sample of nearby star-forming galaxies, from dwarfs ($M_\star\simeq 10^7 M_\odot$) to high-mass spirals ($M_…
Low surface brightness (LSB) galaxies form a major class of galaxies, and are characterized by low disc surface density and low star formation rate. These are known to be dominated by dark matter halo from the innermost regions. Here we study the role of dark matter halo on the grand-design, $m=2$, spiral modes in a galactic disc by carrying out a global mode analysis in the WKB approximation. The Bohr-Sommerfeld quantization rule is used to determine how many discrete global spiral modes are permitted. First a typical superthin LSB galaxy, UGC 7321 is studied by taking only the galactic disc,…
We use a sample of 220 face-on bulge-less galaxies situated in the low density environment to estimate their total mass via orbital motions of supposed rare satellites. Our inspection reveals 43 dwarf companions having the mean projected separation of 130 kpc and the mean-square velocity difference of 96 km/s. For them, we obtain the mean orbital-mass-to-K-band luminosity ratio of $20\pm3$. Seven bulge-less spirals in the Local Volume are also characterized by the low mean ratio, $M_{orb}/L_K = 22\pm5$. We conclude that bulge-less Sc-Scd-Sd galaxies have poor dark halos, about two times lower …
Rotation curves of more than one hundred spiral galaxies were compiled from the literature, and deconvolved into bulge, disk, and dark halo using $χ^2$ fitting in order to determine their scale radii and masses. Correlation analyses were obtained of the fitting parameters for galaxies that satisfied selection and accuracy criteria. Size-mass relations indicate that the sizes and masses are positively correlated among different components in such a way that the larger or more massive is the dark halo, the larger or more massive are the disk and bulge. Empirical size-mass relations were obtained…
Dwarf irregular galaxies with extended HI disk distributions, such as DDO 154, allow measurement of rotation curves, hence deduction of dark matter halo properties to large radial distances, up to several times the optical radius. These galaxies contain a huge reservoir of dark matter halo, which dominates over most of disk. We study the effect of the dark matter halo on small-scale spiral features by carrying out the local, non-axisymmetric perturbation analysis in the disks of five such late-type, gas-rich dwarf irregular galaxies, namely, DDO 154, NGC 3741, DDO 43, NGC 2366, and DDO 168 whi…
The dynamics of a galactic disk in a non-axisymmetric (triaxial) dark halo is studied in detail using high-resolution, numerical, hydrodynamical models. A long-lived, two-armed spiral pattern is generated for a wide range of parameters. The spiral structure is global, and the number of turns can be two or three, depending on the model parameters. The morphology and kinematics of the spiral pattern are studied as functions of the halo and disk parameters. The spiral structure rotates slowly, and its angular velocity varies quasi-periodically. Models with differing relative halo masses, halo sem…
A clear prediction of the Cold Dark Matter model is the existence of cuspy dark matter halo density profiles on all mass scales. This is not in agreement with the observed rotation curves of spiral galaxies, challenging on small scales the otherwise successful CDM paradigm. In this work we employ high resolution cosmological hydro-dynamical simulations to study the effects of dissipative processes on the inner distribution of dark matter in Milky-Way like objects (M~1e12 Msun). Our simulations include supernova feedback, and the effects of the radiation pressure of massive stars before they ex…
We examine ultraviolet halos around a sample of highly inclined galaxies within 25 Mpc to measure their morphology and luminosity. Despite contamination from galactic light scattered into the wings of the point-spread function, we find that UV halos occur around each galaxy in our sample. Around most galaxies the halos form a thick, diffuse disk-like structure, but starburst galaxies with galactic superwinds have qualitatively different halos that are more extensive and have filamentary structure. The spatial coincidence of the UV halos above star-forming regions, the lack of consistent associ…
We investigate the use of spiral arm pitch angles as a probe of disk galaxy mass profiles. We confirm our previous result that spiral arm pitch angles (P) are well correlated with the rate of shear (S) in disk galaxy rotation curves. We use this correlation to argue that imaging data alone can provide a powerful probe of galactic mass distributions out to large look-back times. We then use a sample of 13 galaxies, with Spitzer 3.6-$μ$m imaging data and observed H$α$ rotation curves, to demonstrate how an inferred shear rate coupled with a bulge-disk decomposition model and a Tully-Fisher-deriv…
The degeneracy among the disk, bulge and halo contributions to galaxy rotation curves prevents an understanding of the distribution of baryons and dark matter in disk galaxies. In an attempt to break this degeneracy, we present an analysis of the spiral galaxy strong gravitational lens SDSS J2141-0001, discovered as part of the SLACS survey. We present new Hubble Space Telescope multicolor imaging, gas and stellar kinematics data derived from long-slit spectroscopy, and K-band LGS adaptive optics imaging, both from the Keck telescopes. We model the galaxy as a sum of concentric axisymmetric bu…
Using a sample of spiral galaxies selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 7 (SDSS DR7) and Galaxy Zoo 2 (GZ2), we investigate the alignment of spin axes of spiral galaxies with their surrounding large scale structure, which is characterized by the large-scale tidal field reconstructed from the data using galaxy groups above a certain mass threshold. We find that the spin axes of only have weak tendency to be aligned with (or perpendicular to) the intermediate (or minor) axis of the local tidal tensor. The signal is the strongest in a \cluster environment where all the three eig…
Galaxies are thought to grow through accretion; as less massive galaxies are disrupted and merge over time, their debris results in diffuse, clumpy stellar halos enveloping the central galaxy. Here we present a study of the variation in the stellar halos of galaxies, using data from the Dragonfly Nearby Galaxies Survey (DNGS). The survey consists of wide field, deep ($μ_{g} > 31$ mag arcsec$^{-2}$) optical imaging of nearby galaxies using the Dragonfly Telephoto Array. Our sample includes eight spiral galaxies with stellar masses similar to that of the Milky Way, inclinations of $16-90$ degree…
Context. The magnetic field in spiral galaxies is known to have a large-scale spiral structure along the galactic disk and is observed as X-shaped in the halo of some galaxies. While the disk field can be well explained by dynamo action, the 3-dimensional structure of the halo field and its physical nature is still unclear. Aims. As first steps towards understanding the halo fields, we want to clarify whether the observed X-shaped field is a wide-spread pattern in the halos of spiral galaxies and whether these halo fields are just turbulent fields ordered by compression or shear (anisotropic t…
We investigate a sub-sample of the rotation curves consisting of 45 HSB non-bulgy spiral galaxies selected from SPARC (Spitzer Photometry and Accurate Rotation Curves) database by using two dark halo models (NFW and Burkert) and MOdified Newtonian Dynamics (MOND) theory. Among these three models, the core-dominated Burkert halo model provides a better description of the observed data ($χ_ν^2$ = 0.33) than Navarro, Frenk and White (NFW, $χ_ν^2$= 0.45) and MOND model ($χ_ν^2$ = 0.58). So our results show that, for dark halo models, the selected 45 HSB non-bulgy spiral galaxies prefer a cored den…
We report on the detection of a stellar halo around NGC 1560, a 10^9 Mo spiral galaxy member of the Maffei group. We obtained deep images in the r and i bands using the 10.4m Gran Telescopio Canarias in a field centered at ~ 3.7 arcmin (projected distance of 3.5 kpc) from the center of this galaxy. The luminosity function and the CMD show a clear excess of stars with respect to the expected foreground level at magnitudes fainter than the RGB tip at the distance of NGC 1560. The color of the halo stars implies a metallicity of Z ~ Zo/50, while their counts correspond to a stellar mass of ~ 10^7…
In this second part, we generalize the results of the previous paper. We present an analytic superwind solution considering extended gravitationally-interacting dark-matter and baryonic haloes. The incorporation of the latter is critical, since they can have a substantial effect on the hydrodynamics of superwinds generated by massive galaxies. Although the presence of extended and massive haloes does not change the limit for the closed-box enrichment of galaxies established in the first paper, they can trigger an earlier activation of the open-box enrichment scenario, since their gravitational…
NGC 891 is a nearby edge-on galaxy that is similar to the Milky Way and has a hot X-ray emitting halo that could arise from accretion, a galactic fountain, or a combination of the two. The metallicity of the gas can help distinguish between these models, and here we report on results that use 138 ks of archival Chandra data and 92 ks of new XMM-Newton data to measure the temperature and metallicity of the hot halo of the galaxy. We find good fits for a thermal model with kT ~ 0.2 keV and Z ~ 0.1 solar, and rule out solar metallicity to more than 99% confidence. This result suggests accretion f…
We use a new telescope concept, the Dragonfly Telephoto Array, to study the low surface brightness outskirts of the spiral galaxy M101. The radial surface brightness profile is measured down to mu_g ~ 32 mag/arcsec^2, a depth that approaches the sensitivity of star count studies in the Local Group. We convert surface brightness to surface mass density using the radial g-r color profile. The mass density profile shows no significant upturn at large radius and is well-approximated by a simple bulge + disk model out to R = 70 kpc, corresponding to 18 disk scale lengths. Fitting a bulge + disk + h…
We begin by recalling the isothermal, collisionless, disc-halo. The disc component is the Mestel disc. Subsequently we introduce spiral arms to such an isothermal disc-halo system that are co-moving in the mean with an axi-symmetric background. These correspond to a similar disturbance in the halo, which is comprised of spiral structures on cones. The arms are necessarily transient due to the differential winding in the disc and their gradual destruction is described. Although the spiral potentials are weak compared to the axi-symmetric potential the arms are not propagating waves on the backg…
Super spirals are the most massive star-forming disk galaxies in the universe (Ogle et al. 2016, 2019). We measured rotation curves for 23 massive spirals and find a wide range of fast rotation speeds (240-570 km/s), indicating enclosed dynamical masses of 0.6 - 4E12 Msun. Super spirals with mass in stars log Mstars / Msun > 11.5 break from the baryonic Tully-Fisher relation (BTFR) established for lower mass galaxies. The BTFR power-law index breaks from 3.75 +/- 0.11 to 0.25 +/- 0.41 above a rotation speed of 340 km/s. Super spirals also have very high specific angular momenta that break from…
We use data from the IAC Stripe82 Legacy Project to study the surface photometry of 22 nearby, face-on to moderately inclined spiral galaxies. The reprocessed and combined Stripe 82 $g'$, $r'$ and $i'$ images allow us to probe the galaxy down to 29-30 $r'$-magnitudes/arcsec$^2$ and thus reach into the very faint outskirts of the galaxies. Truncations are found in three galaxies. An additional 15 galaxies are found to have an apparent extended stellar halo. Simulations show that the scattering of light from the inner galaxy by the Point Spread Function (PSF) can produce faint structures resembl…
We consider dark masses measured from kinematic tracers at discrete radii in galaxies for which baryonic contributions to overall potentials are either subtracted or negligible. Recent work indicates that rotation curves due to dark matter (DM) halos at intermediate radii in spiral galaxies are remarkably similar, with a mean rotation curve given by $\log_{10}[V_{c,\mathrm{DM}}/(\mathrm{km s^{-1}})]=1.47_{-0.19}^{+0.15}+0.5\log_{10}[r/\mathrm{kpc}]$. Independent studies show that while estimates of the dark mass of a given dwarf spheroidal (dSph) galaxy are robust only near the half-light radi…
The low surface brightness galaxies are gas-rich and yet have a low star formation rate, this is a well-known puzzle. The spiral features in these galaxies are weak and difficult to trace, although this aspect has not been studied much. These galaxies are known to be dominated by the dark matter halo from the innermost regions. Here we do a stability analysis for the galactic disc of UGC 7321, a low surface brightness, superthin galaxy, for which the various observational input parameters are available. We show that the disc is stable against local, linear axisymmetric and non-axisymmetric per…
We recover spiral and barred spiral patterns in disk galaxy simulations with a Wave Dark Matter (WDM) background (also known as Scalar Field Dark Matter (SFDM), Ultra-Light Axion (ULA) dark matter, and Bose-Einstein Condensate (BEC) dark matter). Here we show how the interaction between a baryonic disk and its Dark Matter Halo triggers the formation of spiral structures when the halo is allowed to have a triaxial shape and angular momentum. This is a more realistic picture within the WDM model since a non-spherical rotating halo seems to be more natural. By performing hydrodynamic simulations,…
We present the mass models of 31 spiral and irregular nearby galaxies obtained using hybrid rotation curves (RCs) combining high resolution GHASP Fabry-Perot H$α$ RCs and extended WHISP HI ones together with 3.4 $μ$m WISE photometry. The aim is to compare the dark matter (DM) halo properties within the optical radius using only H$α$ RCs with the effect of including and excluding the mass contribution of the neutral gas component, and when using HI or hybrid RCs. Pseudo-isothermal (ISO) core and Navarro-Frenk-White (NFW) cuspy DM halo profiles are used with various fiducial fitting procedures. …
We use recent very extended HI kinematics (out to 48 kpc) along with previous H$α$ kinematics of the spiral galaxy NGC 3198 in order to derive its distribution of dark matter (DM). First, we used a chi-square method to model the rotation curve (RC) of this galaxy in terms of different profiles of its DM distribution: the universal rotation curve (URC) mass model (stellar disk $+$ Burkert halo $+$ gaseous disk), the NFW mass model (stellar disk $+$ NFW halo $+$ gaseous disk) and the baryon $Λ$CDM mass model (stellar disk $+$ NFW halo modified by baryonic physics $+$ gaseous disk). Second, to de…
We present an update to the multiphase SPH galaxy formation code by Scannapieco et al. We include a more elaborate treatment of the production of metals, cooling rates based on individual element abundances, and a scheme for the turbulent diffusion of metals. Our SN feedback model now transfers energy to the ISM in kinetic and thermal form, and we include a prescription for the effects of radiation pressure from massive young stars on the ISM. We calibrate our new code on the well studied Aquarius haloes and then use it to simulate a sample of 16 galaxies with halo masses between 1x10^11 and 3…
We present a deep Chandra observation of the extremely massive spiral galaxy 2MASX J23453268-0449256, the first X-ray observation of this very rare system which features the largest known relativistic jets from a spiral galaxy. We detect extended X-ray emission from the hot halo surrounding the galaxy, reaching out to 80 kpc in radius. The hot halo is elongated along the plane of the spiral galaxy, and one possibility is that the powerful relativistic jets have disrupted the hot halo gas located perpendicular to the disk. Our calculations indicate that it is energetically feasible that the AGN…
The manifold theory of barred-spiral structure provides a dynamical mechanism explaining how spiral arms beyond the ends of galactic bars can be supported by chaotic flows extending beyond the bar's co-rotation zone. We discuss its applicability to N-body simulations of secularly evolving barred galaxies. In these simulations, we observe consecutive `incidents' of spiral activity, leading to a time-varying disc morphology. Besides disc self-excitations, we provide evidence of a newly noted excitation mechanism related to the `off-centering' effect: particles ejected in elongated orbits at majo…

The dark matter halos in $Λ$CDM cosmological simulations are triaxial and highly flattened. In many cases, these triaxial equilibria are also tumbling slowly, typically about their short axes, with periods of order a Hubble time. Halos may therefore exert a slowly changing external torque on spiral galaxies that can affect their dynamical evolution in interesting ways. We examine the effect of the external torques exerted by a tumbling quadrupolar tidal field on the evolution of spiral galaxies using N-body simulations with realistic, disk galaxy models. We measure the amplitude of the externa…
We study the global consequences in the halos of spiral galaxies of the steady, axially symmetric, mean field dynamo. We use the classical theory but add the possibility of using the velocity field components as parameters in addition to the helicity and diffusivity. The analysis is based on the simplest version of the theory and uses scale-invariant solutions. The velocity field (subject to restrictions) is a scale invariant field in a `pattern' frame, in place of a full dynamical theory. The `pattern frame' of reference may either be the systemic frame or some rigidly rotating spiral pattern…
Thanks to deep UV observations with GALEX and Swift, diffuse UV haloes have recently been discovered around galaxies. Based on UV-optical colours, it has been advocated that the UV haloes around spiral galaxies are due to UV radiation emitted from the disc and scattered off dust grains at high latitudes. Detailed UV radiative transfer models that take into account scattering and absorption can explain the morphology of the UV haloes, and they require the presence of an additional thick dust disc next the to traditional thin disc for half of the galaxies in their sample. We test whether such an…
