In this paper, we analysed the halos and voids properties of a GR-based N-body simulation carried out at redshifts z= 0.0 and z= 0.8 as differences between dynamical dark energy models (namely PL and CPL) with respect to LCDM. Analysing the halos demonstrates that both models, PL and CPL, behave like LCDM, despite the velocity dispersion of halos was more sensitive to the dynamical dark energy model. In addition, a void finder was developed to extract the properties of voids from simulated data. Further statistical model on voids confirms that the PL model produces larger voids. In summary, our novel simulation demonstrates void properties are better than halo properties in discriminating between dark energy models. Hence, the results suggest to make more use of the properties of voids in future studies of discriminating dynamical dark energy models.
The bias of dark matter halos and galaxies is a crucial quantity in many cosmological analyses. In this work, using large cosmological simulations, we explore the halo mass function and halo bias within cosmic voids. For the first time to date, we show that they are scale-dependent along the void profile, and provide a predictive theoretical model of both the halo mass function and halo bias inside voids, recovering for the latter and 1% accuracy against simulated data. These findings may help shed light on the dynamics of halo formation within voids and improve the analysis of several void st…
Using cosmological $N$-body simulation which coevolves cold dark matter (CDM) and neutrino particles, we discover the local effect of massive neutrinos on the spatial distribution of CDM halos, reflected on properties of the Delaunay Triangulation (DT) voids. Smaller voids are generally in regions with higher neutrino abundance and so their surrounding halos are impacted by a stronger neutrino free streaming. This makes the voids larger (surrounding halos being washed outward the void center). On the contrary, larger voids are generally in regions with lower neutrino abundance and so their sur…
Evidence shows properties of dark matter haloes may vary with large-scale environment. By studying the halo occupation distribution in cosmic voids it is possible to obtain useful information that can shed light on the subject. The history of the formation of the haloes and galaxies residing in these regions is likely to differ from the global behaviour given their extreme environment. We use two public access simulated galaxy catalogues constructed with different methods: a semi-analytical model and a hydrodynamic simulation. In both, we identify cosmic voids and we measure the halo occupatio…
Using a mapping from dark matter halos to galaxy properties based on hydrodynamical simulations, we explore the impact of galaxy properties on the void size function and the void-galaxy correlation function. We replicate the properties of galaxies from Illustris on MassiveNus halos, to perform both luminosity and star formation rate cuts on MassiveNus halos. We compare the impact of such cuts on voids properties with respect to cuts on halo mass (as usually performed on halo catalogs driven from N-body simulations). We find that void catalogs built from luminosity-selected galaxies and halos a…
Cosmic voids, the underdense regions in the universe, are particularly sensitive to diffuse density components such as cosmic neutrinos. This sensitivity is enhanced by the match between void sizes and the free-streaming scale of massive neutrinos. Using the massive neutrino simulations \texttt{MassiveNuS}, we investigate the effect of neutrino mass on dark matter halos as a function of environment. We find that the halo mass function depends strongly on neutrino mass and that this dependence is more pronounced in voids than in high-density environments. An observational program that measured …
Cosmic voids provide a unique environment to study galaxy formation and evolution. In this paper, we analyse a set of hydrodynamic zoom-in simulations of voids, to analyse in detail their inner structures. These voids were identified in a cosmological simulation and classified according to their surrounding dynamics at very large scales: whether they are in expansion or contraction at their outskirts. We study how these environments and the dynamics of voids impact the baryonic processes inside haloes and their mechanisms of formation and evolution. We find an under-abundance of processed gas …
We study the large-scale bias parameter of cosmic voids with primordial non-Gaussian (PNG) initial conditions of the local type. In this scenario, the dark matter halo bias exhibits a characteristic scale dependence on large scales, which has been recognized as one of the most promising probes of the local PNG. Using a suite of $N$-body simulations with Gaussian and non-Gaussian initial conditions, we find that the void bias features scale-dependent corrections on large scales, similar to its halo counterpart. We find excellent agreement between the numerical measurement of the PNG void bias a…
Cosmic voids provide a powerful probe of the origin and evolution of structures in the Universe because their dynamics can remain near-linear to the present day. As a result they have the potential to connect large scale structure at late times to early-Universe physics. Existing "watershed"-based algorithms, however, define voids in terms of their morphological properties at low redshift. The degree to which the resulting regions exhibit linear dynamics is consequently uncertain, and there is no direct connection to their evolution from the initial density field. A recent void definition addr…
The abundance of cosmic voids can be described by an analogue of halo mass functions for galaxy clusters. In this work, we explore a number of void mass functions: from those based on excursion-set theory to new mass functions obtained by modifying halo mass functions. We show how different void mass functions vary in their predictions for the largest void expected in an observational volume, and compare those predictions to observational data. Our extreme-value formalism is shown to be a new practical tool for testing void theories against simulation and observation.

Cosmic voids offer an extraordinary opportunity to study the effects of massive neutrinos on cosmological scales. Because they are freely streaming, neutrinos can penetrate the interior of voids more easily than cold dark matter or baryons, which makes their relative contribution to the mass budget in voids much higher than elsewhere in the Universe. In simulations it has recently been shown how various characteristics of voids in the matter distribution are affected by neutrinos, such as their abundance, density profiles, dynamics, and clustering properties. However, the tracers used to ident…
Within the Halo Model of large scale structure, all matter is contained in dark matter halos. This simple yet powerful framework has been broadly applied to multiple data sets and enriched our comprehension of how matter is distributed in the Universe. In this work we extend this assumption by allowing for matter to rest not only inside halos but also within cosmic voids and in between halos and voids (which we call 'dust'). This assumption leads to additional contributions (1Void, 2Void, Halo-Void, etc.) to the predictions of correlation functions, spectra and profiles for both halos and void…
Voids have emerged as a novel probe of cosmology and large-scale structure. These regions of extreme underdensity are sensitive to physics beyond the standard model of cosmology, and can potentially be used as a testing ground to constrain new physics. We present the first determination of the linear void bias measured in separate universe simulations. Our methods are validated by comparing the separate universe response bias with the clustering bias of voids. We find excellent agreement between the two methods for voids identified in the halo field and the down-sampled dark matter field. For …

The Vainshtein mechanism, present in many models of gravity, is very effective at screening dark matter halos such that the fifth force is negligible and general relativity is recovered within their Vainshtein radii. Vainshtein screening is independent of halo mass and environment, in contrast to e.g. chameleon screening, making it difficult to test. However, our previous studies have found that the dark matter particles in filaments, walls, and voids are not screened by the Vainshtein mechanism. We therefore investigate whether cosmic voids, identified as local density minima using a watershe…

We stack maps of the thermal Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect produced by the Planck Collaboration around the centers of cosmic voids defined by the distribution of galaxies in the CMASS sample of the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey, scaled by the void effective radii. We report a first detection of the associated cross-correlation at the $3.4σ$ level: voids are under-pressured relative to the cosmic mean. We compare the measured Compton-$y$ profile around voids with a model based solely on the spatial modulation of halo abundance with environmental density. The amplitude of the detected sign…

We perform for the first time N-body simulations of Interacting Dark Energy assuming non-Gaussian initial conditions, with the aim of investigating possible degeneracies of these two theoretically independent phenomena in different observational probes. We focus on the large-scale matter distribution, as well as on the statistical and structural properties of collapsed halos and cosmic voids. On very large scales, we show that it is possible to choose the Interaction and non-Gaussian parameters such that their effects on the halo power spectrum cancel, and the power spectrum is indistinguishab…
We study the statistics of various large-scale structure tracers in gravity-only cosmological simulations including baryons and cold dark matter (CDM) initialized with two different transfer functions, and simulated as two distinct fluids. This allows us to study the impact of baryon-CDM relative perturbations on these statistics. In particular, we focus on the statistics of cosmic voids, as well as on the matter and halo real-space 2-point correlation function and baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO) peak. We find that the void size function is affected at the 1-2% level at maximum, and that th…

We perform a statistical study of the global motion of cosmic voids using both a numerical simulation and observational data. We analyse their relation to large-scale mass flows and the physical effects that drive those motions. We analyse the bulk motions of voids, defined by the mean velocity of haloes in the surrounding shells in the numerical simulation, and by galaxies in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 7. We find void mean bulk velocities close to 400 km/s, comparable to those of haloes (~ 500-600 km/s), depending on void size and the large-scale environment. Statistically, sma…
We develop a method to identify cosmic voids from the matter density field by adopting a physically-motivated concept that voids are the counterpart of massive clusters. To prove the concept we use a pair of $Λ$CDM simulations, a reference and its initial density-inverted mirror simulation, and study the relation between the effective size of voids and the mass of corresponding clusters. Galaxy cluster-scale dark matter halos are identified in the Mirror simulation at $z=0$ by linking dark matter particles. The void corresponding to each cluster is defined in the Reference simulation as the re…
Dark matter halos represent the highest density peaks in the matter distribution. Conversely, cosmic voids are under-dense patches of the universe. Probing the mass distribution of the universe requires various approaches, including weak gravitational lensing that subtly modifies the shape of distant sources, and Doppler lensing that changes the apparent size and magnitude of objects due to peculiar velocities. In this work, we adopt both gravitational and Doppler lensing effects to study the underlying matter distribution in and around cosmic voids/halos. We use the relativistic $N$-body code…
The Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO) refer to the ripples of material density in the Universe. As the most direct density tracers in the universe, galaxies have been commonly used in studies of BAO peak detection. The spatial number density of galaxies, to a certain extent, reflects the distribution of the material density of our Universe. Using galaxies as matter tracers, we can construct more overlapping empty spheres (DT voids) than the matter tracers, via Delaunay Triangulation technique. We show that their radii excellently reflect the galaxy number density round them, and they can serv…
