The Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO) refer to the ripples of material density in the Universe. As the most direct density tracers in the universe, galaxies have been commonly used in studies of BAO peak detection. The spatial number density of galaxies, to a certain extent, reflects the distribution of the material density of our Universe. Using galaxies as matter tracers, we can construct more overlapping empty spheres (DT voids) than the matter tracers, via Delaunay Triangulation technique. We show that their radii excellently reflect the galaxy number density round them, and they can serve as reliable different density region tracers. Using the data from an unprecedented large-scale $N$-body simulation "TianNu", we conduct some fundamental statistical studies and clustering analysis of the DT voids. We discuss in detail the representative features of two-point correlation functions of different DT void populations. We show that the peak, the position of which corresponds to the average radius of data samples, is the most representative feature of the two-point correlation function of the DT voids. In addition, we also construct another voids, the disjoint voids, and investigate their some statistical properties and clustering properties. And we find that the occupied space of all disjoint voids accounts for about $45\%$ of the volume of the simulation box, regardless of the number density of mock galaxies. We also investigate the BAO detections based on different tracers, i.e. mock galaxies, low-density region tracers, and high-density region tracers respectively. Our results show that BAO intensities detected by low/high-density region tracers are enhanced significantly compared to the BAO detection by mock galaxies, for the mock galaxy catalogue with the number density of $7.52\times10^{-5}$ $h^3$ Mpc$^{-3}$.
Measurements of neutrino mass in cosmological observations rely on two point statistics that are hindered by significant degeneracies with the optical depth and galaxy bias. The relative velocity effect between cold dark matter and neutrinos induces a large scale dipole into the matter density field and may be able to provide orthogonal constraints to standard techniques. We numerically investigate this dipole in the TianNu Simulation, which contains cold dark matter and 50 meV neutrinos. We first compute the dipole using a new linear response technique where we treat the displacement caused b…
We study the effect of noise in the density field, such as would arise from a finite number density of tracers, on reconstruction of the acoustic peak within the context of Lagrangian perturbation theory. Reconstruction performs better when the density field is determined from denser tracers, but the gains saturate at n~1e-4(h/Mpc)^3. For low density tracers it is best to use a large smoothing scale to define the shifts, but the optimum is very broad.
The reconstruction of the initial conditions of the Universe is an important topic in cosmology, particularly in the context of sharpening the measurement of the baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) peak. Nonlinear reconstruction algorithms developed in recent years, when applied to late-time matter fields, can recover to a substantial degree the initial density distribution, however, when applied to sparse tracers of the matter field, the performance is poorer. In this paper we apply the Shi et al. non-linear reconstruction method to biased tracers in order to establish what factors affect the r…

A weighted, semi-discrete, fast optimal transport (OT) algorithm for reconstructing the Lagrangian positions of proto-halos from their evolved Eulerian positions is presented. The algorithm makes use of a mass estimate of the biased tracers and of the distribution of the remaining mass (the `dust'), but is robust to errors in the mass estimates. Tests with state-of-art cosmological simulations show that if the dust is assumed to have a uniform spatial distribution, then the shape of the OT-reconstructed pair correlation function of the tracers is very close to linear theory, enabling sub-perce…
We develop a methodology to optimise the measurement of Baryon Acoustic Oscillation (BAO) from a given galaxy sample. In our previous work, we demonstrated that one can measure BAO from tracers in under-dense regions (voids). In this study, we combine the over-dense and under-dense tracers (galaxies & voids) to obtain better constraints on the BAO scale. To this end, we modify the de-wiggled BAO model with an additional parameter to describe both the BAO peak and the underlying exclusion pattern of void 2PCFs. We show that after applying BAO reconstruction to galaxies, the BAO peak scale of bo…
The baryon acoustic oscillation feature can be used as a standard cosmological ruler. In practice, for sub-percent level accuracy on the distance scale, it must be standardized. The physical reason why is understood, so we use this to develop an algorithm which improves the estimated scale. The algorithm exploits the fact that, over the range of scales where the initial correlation function is well-fit by a polynomial, the leading order effects which distort the length of the ruler can be accounted for analytically. Tests of the method in numerical simulations show that it provides simple and …
The baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) experiment requires a sufficiently dense sampling of large-scale structure tracers with spectroscopic redshift, which is observationally expensive especially at high redshifts $z\simgt 1$. Here we present an alternative route of the BAO analysis that uses the cross-correlation of sparse spectroscopic tracers with a much denser photometric sample, where the spectroscopic tracers can be quasars or bright, rare galaxies that are easier to access spectroscopically. We show that measurements of the cross-correlation as a function of the transverse comoving sepa…
Cosmic voids defined as a subset of Delaunay Triangulation (DT) circumspheres have been used to measure the Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO) scale; providing tighter constraints on cosmological parameters when combined with matter tracers. These voids are defined as spheres larger than a given radius threshold, which is constant over the survey volume. However, the response of these void tracers to observational systematics has not yet been studied. In this work we analyse the response of void clustering to selection effects. We find for the case of moderate (<20 per cent) incompleteness, vo…
A shift of the baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) scale to smaller values than predicted by linear theory was observed in simulations. In this paper, we try to provide an intuitive physical understanding of why this shift occurs, explaining in more pedagogical detail earlier perturbation theory calculations. We find that the shift is mainly due to the following physical effect. A measurement of the BAO scale is more sensitive to regions with long wavelength overdensities than underdensities, because (due to non-linear growth and bias) these overdense regions contain larger fluctuations and more…
In light of recent successes in measuring baryon acoustic oscillations in quasar absorption using the Lyman $α$ (Ly$α$) transition, I explore the possibility of using the 1548Å transition of triply ionized carbon (C IV) as a tracer. While the Ly-alpha forest is a more sensitive tracer of intergalactic gas, it is limited by the fact that it can only be measured in the optical window at redshifts $z > 2$. Quasars are challenging to identify and observe at these high-redshifts, but the C IV forest can be probed down to redshifts $z \approx 1.3$, taking full advantage of the peak in the redshift d…
The baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) method for constraining the expansion history is adversely affected by non-linear structure formation, which washes out the correlation function peak created at decoupling. To increase the constraining power of low z BAO experiments, it has been proposed that one use the observed distribution of galaxies to "reconstruct'' the acoustic peak. Recently Padmanabhan, White and Cohn provided an analytic formalism for understanding how reconstruction works within the context of Lagrangian perturbation theory. We extend that formalism to include the case of biased…
NoAM for "No Action Method" is a framework for reconstructing the past orbits of observed tracers of the large scale mass density field. It seeks exact solutions of the equations of motion (EoM), satisfying initial homogeneity and the final observed particle (tracer) positions. The solutions are found iteratively reaching a specified tolerance defined as the RMS of the distance between reconstructed and observed positions. Starting from a guess for the initial conditions, NoAM advances particles using standard N-body techniques for solving the EoM. Alternatively, the EoM can be replaced by any…
We explore Lagrangian perturbation theory (LPT) for biased tracers in the presence of two fluids, focusing on the case of cold dark matter (CDM) and baryons. The presence of two fluids induces corrections to the Lagrangian bias expansion and tracer advection, both of which we formulate as expansions in the three linear modes of the Lagrangian equations of motion. We compute the linear-order two-fluid corrections in the Zeldovich approximation, finding that modifications to the bias expansion and tracer advection both enter as percent-level corrections over a large range of wavenumbers at low r…
Recent development in the reconstruction of the large-scale structure (LSS) has seen significant improvement in restoring the linear baryonic acoustic oscillation (BAO) from at least the non-linear matter field. This outstanding performance is achieved by iteratively solving the Monge-Ampere equation of the mass conservation. However, this technique also relies on several assumptions that are not valid in reality, namely the longitudinal displacement, the absence of shell-crossing and homogeneous initial condition. In particular, the conservation equation of the tracers comprises the biasing i…
The baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) scale acts as a standard ruler for measuring cosmological distances and has therefore emerged as a leading probe of cosmic expansion history. However, any physical effect that alters the length of the ruler can lead to a bias in our determination of distance and expansion rate. One of these physical effects is the streaming velocity, the relative velocity between baryons and dark matter in the early Universe, which couples to the BAO scale due to their common origin in acoustic waves at recombination. In this work, we investigate the impact of streaming ve…
Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO) are a feature imprinted in the density field by acoustic waves travelling in the plasma of the early universe. Their fixed scale can be used as a standard ruler to study the geometry of the universe. BAO have been previously detected using correlation functions and power spectra of the galaxy distribution. In this work, we present a new method for the detection of the real-space structures associated with this feature. These baryon acoustic structures are spherical shells with a relatively small density contrast, surrounding high density central regions. We d…
We produce 1000 realizations of synthetic clustering catalogues for each type of the tracers used for the baryon acoustic oscillation and redshift space distortion analysis of the Sloan Digital Sky Surveys-IV extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey final data release (eBOSS DR16), covering the redshift range from 0.6 to 2.2, to provide reliable estimates of covariance matrices and test the robustness of the analysis pipeline with respect to observational systematics. By extending the Zel'dovich approximation density field with an effective tracer bias model calibrated with the cluster…
We present the first simulation of the signature of baryonic acoustic oscillations (BAO) in Lyman alpha forest data containing 180,000 mock quasar sight-lines. We use eight large dark-matter only simulations onto which we paint the Lyman alpha field using the fluctuating Gunn-Peterson approximation. We argue that this approach should be sufficient for the mean signature on the scales of interest. Our results indicate that Lyman alpha flux provides a good tracer of the underlying dark matter field on large scales and that redshift space distortions are well described by a simple linear theory p…
We present a comparison between approximated methods for the construction of mock catalogs based on the halo-bias mapping technique. To this end, we use as reference a high resolution $N$-body simulation of 3840$^3$ dark matter particles on a 400$h^{-1}\rm{Mpc}$ cube box from the Multidark suite. In particular, we explore parametric versus non-parametric bias mapping approaches and compare them at reproducing the halo distribution in terms of the two and three point statistics down to $\sim 10^8\,{\rm M}_{\odot}\,h^{-1}$ halo masses. Our findings demonstrate that the parametric approach remain…

We detect the peak of baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO) in the two-point correlation function of a spectroscopic sample of $25226$ clusters selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. Galaxy clusters, as tracers of massive dark matter haloes, are highly biased structures. The linear bias $b$ of the sample considered in this work, that we estimate from the projected correlation function, is $b σ_8 = 1.72 \pm 0.03$. Thanks to the high signal in the cluster correlation function and to the accurate spectroscopic redshift measurements, we can clearly detect the BAO peak and determine its position,…
We perform a multi-tracer analysis using the complete Sloan Digital Sky Survey IV (SDSS-IV) extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS) DR16 luminous red galaxy (LRG) and the DR16 emission line galaxy (ELG) samples in the configuration space, and successfully detect a cross correlation between the two samples, and find the growth rate to be $fσ_8=0.342 \pm 0.085$ ($\sim25$ per cent accuracy) from the cross sample alone. We perform a joint measurement of the baryonic acoustic oscillation (BAO) and redshift space distortion (RSD) parameters at a single effective redshift of $z_{\rm …
We utilise mock catalogues from high-accuracy cosmological $N$-body simulations to quantify shifts in the recovery of the acoustic scale that could potentially result from galaxy clustering bias. The relationship between galaxies and dark matter halos presents a complicated source of systematic errors in modern redshift surveys, particularly when aiming to make cosmological measurements to sub-percent precision. Apart from a scalar, linear bias parameter accounting for the density contrast ratio between matter tracers and the true matter distribution, other types of galaxy bias, such as assemb…
The clustering properties of the Universe at large-scales are currently being probed at various redshifts through several cosmological tracers and with diverse statistical estimators. Here we use the three-point angular correlation function (3PACF) to probe the baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) features in the quasars catalogue from the twelfth data release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, with mean redshift z = 2.225, detecting the BAO imprint with a statistical significance of 2.9σ, obtained using lognormal mocks. Following a quasi model-independent approach for the 3PACF, we find the BAO tr…
The baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) feature in the two-point correlation function of galaxies supplies a standard ruler to probe the expansion history of the Universe. We study here several galaxy selection schemes, aiming at building an emission-line galaxy (ELG) sample in the redshift range $0.6<z<1.7$, that would be suitable for future BAO studies, providing a highly biased galaxy sample. We analyse the angular galaxy clustering of galaxy selections at the redshifts 0.5, 0.7, 0.8, 1 and 1.2 and we combine this analysis with a halo occupation distribution (HOD) model to derive the properti…
We incorporate the effects of redshift space distortions and non-linear bias in time-sliced perturbation theory (TSPT). This is done via a new method that allows to map cosmological correlation functions from real to redshift space. This mapping preserves a transparent infrared (IR) structure of the theory and provides us with an efficient tool to study non-linear infrared effects altering the pattern of baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO) in redshift space. We give an accurate description of the BAO by means of a systematic resummation of Feynman diagrams guided by well-defined power counting …
The baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) feature in the clustering of matter in the universe serves as a robust standard ruler and hence can be used to map the expansion history of the universe. We use high force resolution simulations to analyze the effects of galaxy bias on the measurements of the BAO signal. We apply a variety of Halo Occupation Distributions (HODs) and produce biased mass tracers to mimic different galaxy populations. We investigate whether galaxy bias changes the non-linear shifts on the acoustic scale relative to the underlying dark matter distribution presented by Seo et a…
Plenty of crucial information about our Universe is encoded in the cosmic large-scale structure (LSS). However, the extractions of these information are usually hindered by the nonlinearities of the LSS, which can be largely alleviated by various techniques known as the reconstruction. In realistic applications, the efficiencies of these methods are always degraded by many limiting factors, a quite important one being the shot noise induced by the finite number density of biased matter tracers (i.e., luminous galaxies or dark matter halos) in observations. In this work, we explore the gains of…
In the standard model of cosmology, the Universe is static in comoving coordinates; expansion occurs homogeneously and is represented by a global scale factor. The baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) peak location is a statistical tracer that represents, in the standard model, a fixed comoving-length standard ruler. Recent gravitational collapse should modify the metric, rendering the effective scale factor, and thus the BAO standard ruler, spatially inhomogeneous. Using the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, we show to high significance (P < 0.001) that the spatial compression of the BAO peak location i…
Future dark energy experiments will require better and more accurate theoretical predictions for the baryonic acoustic oscillations (BAO) signature in the spectrum of cosmological perturbations. Here, we use large N-body simulations of the \LambdaCDM Planck cosmology to study any possible systematic shifts and damping in BAO due to the impact of nonlinear gravitational growth of structure, scale dependent and non-local bias, and redshift-space distortions. The effect of cosmic variance is largely reduced by dividing the tracer power spectrum by that from a BAO-free simulation starting with the…
We investigate the necessary methodology to optimally measure the baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) signal, from voids based on galaxy redshift catalogues. To this end, we study the dependency of the BAO signal on the population of voids classified by their sizes. We find for the first time the characteristic features of the correlation function of voids including the first robust detection of BAOs in mock galaxy catalogues. These show an anti-correlation around the scale corresponding to the smallest size of voids in the sample (the void exclusion effect), and dips at both sides of the BAO pe…
The Baryon Acoustic Oscillation (BAO) scale in the clustering of galaxies is a powerful standard ruler to measure cosmological distances and determine the geometry of the Universe. Past surveys have detected the BAO feature in the clustering of different galaxy samples, most of them composed of redder, quiescent galaxies and bluer, star-forming ones out to redshift $z\sim1$. Besides these targets, new upcoming surveys will observe high-redshift galaxies with bright nebular emission lines out to $z\sim2$, quasars and Lyman-$α$ quasars at $z\gt 2$. All these different galaxy targets will be used…
We investigate the application of volume statistics to probe the distribution of underdense regions in the large-scale structure of the Universe. This statistic measures the distortion of Eulerian volume elements relative to Lagrangian ones and can be built from tracer particles using tessellation methods. We apply Voronoi and Delaunay tessellation to study the clustering properties of density and volume statistics. Their level of shot-noise contamination is similar, as both methods take into account all available tracer particles in the field estimator. The tessellation causes a smoothing eff…
The baryon-acoustic oscillation (BAO) feature in the Lyman-$α$ forest is one of the key probes of the cosmic expansion rate at redshifts z~2.5, well before dark energy is believed to have become dynamically significant. A key advantage of the BAO as a standard ruler is that it is a sharp feature and hence is more robust against broadband systematic effects than other cosmological probes. However, if the Lyman-$α$ forest transmission is sensitive to the initial streaming velocity of the baryons relative to the dark matter, then the BAO peak position can be shifted. Here we investigate this sens…
Models of galaxy and halo clustering commonly assume that the tracers can be treated as a continuous field locally biased with respect to the underlying mass distribution. In the peak model pioneered by BBKS, one considers instead density maxima of the initial, Gaussian mass density field as an approximation to the formation site of virialized objects. In this paper, the peak model is extended in two ways to improve its predictive accuracy. Firstly, we derive the two-point correlation function of initial density peaks up to second order and demonstrate that a peak-background split approach can…
We present the first attempt at measuring the baryonic acoustic oscillations (BAO) in the large scale cross-correlation between the magnesium-II doublet (MgII) flux transmission field and the position of quasar and galaxy tracers. The MgII flux transmission continuous field at $0.3 < z < 1.6$ is measured from 500,589 quasar spectra obtained in the Baryonic Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS) and the extended BOSS (eBOSS). The position of 246,697 quasar tracers and 1,346,776 galaxy tracers are extracted from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) I, II, BOSS and eBOSS catalogs. In addition to …
The baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) feature provides an important distance scale for the measurement of the expansion history of the Universe. Theoretical models of the BAO in the distribution of biased tracers of the large scale structure usually rely on an initially linear BAO. With aid of N-body simulations, we demonstrate that the BAO in the initial (Lagrangian) halo 2-point function is significantly sharper than in the linear matter distribution, in agreement with peak theory. Using this approach, we delineate the scale-dependence induced by the higher-derivative and velocity bias befor…
At the epoch of decoupling, cosmic baryons had supersonic velocities relative to the dark matter that were coherent on large scales. These velocities subsequently slow the growth of small-scale structure and, via feedback processes, can influence the formation of larger galaxies. We examine the effect of streaming velocities on the galaxy correlation function, including all leading-order contributions for the first time. We find that the impact on the BAO peak is dramatically enhanced (by a factor of ~5) over the results of previous investigations, with the primary new effect due to advection:…
The physical scale corresponding to baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO), the size of the sound horizon at recombination, is precisely determined by CMB experiments. Measuring the apparent size of the BAO scale imprinted in the clustering of galaxies gives us a direct estimate of the angular-diameter distance and the Hubble parameter as a function of redshift. The BAO feature is damped by non-linear structure formation, which reduces the precision with which we can infer the BAO scale from standard galaxy clustering analysis methods. Many methods to undo this damping via the so-called BAO recons…
We present measurements of the Baryon Acoustic Oscillation (BAO) scale in redshift-space using the clustering of quasars. We consider a sample of 147,000 quasars from the extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS) distributed over 2044 square degrees with redshifts $0.8 < z < 2.2$ and measure their spherically-averaged clustering in both configuration and Fourier space. Our observational dataset and the 1400 simulated realizations of the dataset allow us to detect a preference for BAO that is greater than 2.8$σ$. We determine the spherically averaged BAO distance to $z = 1.52$ to…

We present a science forecast for the eBOSS survey, part of the SDSS-IV project, which is a spectroscopic survey using multiple tracers of large-scale structure, including luminous red galaxies (LRGs), emission line galaxies (ELGs) and quasars (both as a direct probe of structure and through the Ly-$α$ forest). Focusing on discrete tracers, we forecast the expected accuracy of the baryonic acoustic oscillation (BAO), the redshift-space distortion (RSD) measurements, the $f_{\rm NL}$ parameter quantifying the primordial non-Gaussianity, the dark energy and modified gravity parameters. We also u…
We study the statistics of various large-scale structure tracers in gravity-only cosmological simulations including baryons and cold dark matter (CDM) initialized with two different transfer functions, and simulated as two distinct fluids. This allows us to study the impact of baryon-CDM relative perturbations on these statistics. In particular, we focus on the statistics of cosmic voids, as well as on the matter and halo real-space 2-point correlation function and baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO) peak. We find that the void size function is affected at the 1-2% level at maximum, and that th…
We measure the transverse baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO) signal in the local Universe using a sample of blue galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) survey as a cosmological tracer. The method is weakly dependent on a cosmological model and is suitable for 2D analyses in thin redshift bins to investigate the SDSS data in the interval $z {\in} [0.105, 0.115]$. We detect the transverse BAO signal $θ_{BAO} = 19.8^° {\pm} 1.05^°$ at $z_{eff} = 0.11$, with a statistical significance of $2.2 σ$. Additionally, we perform tests that confirm the robustness of this angular BAO signature. S…
Weak lensing (WL) clustering is studied using 2D (angular) coordinates, while redshift space distortions (RSD) and baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO) use 3D coordinates, which requires a model dependent conversion of angles and redshifts into comoving distances. This is the first paper of a series, which explore modelling multi-tracer galaxy clustering (of WL, BAO and RSD), using only angular (2D) cross-correlations in thin redshift bins. This involves evaluating many thousands cross-correlations, each a multidimensional integral, which is computationally demanding. We present a new algorithm …
We present a self-consistent Bayesian formalism to sample the primordial density fields compatible with a set of dark matter density tracers after cosmic evolution observed in redshift space. Previous works on density reconstruction did not self-consistently consider redshift space distortions or included an additional iterative distortion correction step. We present here the analytic solution of coherent flows within a Hamiltonian Monte Carlo posterior sampling of the primordial density field. We test our method within the Zel'dovich approximation, presenting also an analytic solution includi…
Luminous red galaxies (LRGs) are one of the key tracers of the large-scale structure of the Universe used by galaxy surveys. Hence, it is important to make accurate predictions for their properties and clustering, including the errors on these statistics. Here, we describe a novel technique which uses the semi-analytical model of galaxy formation {\sc Galform}, embedded in the high-resolution $N$-body Planck-Millennium simulation, to populate a thousand halo catalogues generated using the Parallel-PM $N$-body {\sc glam} code. Our hybrid scheme allows us to make clustering predictions on scales…
