We present measurements of the small-scale (0.1<~ r <~ 1 Mpc/h) quasar two-point correlation function at z>2.9, for a flux-limited (i<21) sample of 15 binary quasars compiled by Hennawi et al. (2009). The amplitude of the small-scale clustering increases from z ~ 3 to z ~ 4. The small-scale clustering amplitude is comparable to or lower than power-law extrapolations (with slope gamma=2) from the large-scale correlation function of the i<20.2 quasar sample from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. Using simple prescriptions relating quasars to dark matter halos, we model the observed small-scale clustering with halo occupation models. Reproducing the large-scale clustering amplitude requires that the active fraction of the black holes in the central galaxies of halos is near unity, but the level of small-scale clustering favors an active fraction of black holes in satellite galaxies 0.1 <~ f_s <~ 0.5 at z >~ 3.
State-of-the-art models of massive black hole formation postulate that quasars at $z>6$ reside in extreme peaks of the cosmic density structure in the early universe. Even so, direct observational evidence of these overdensities is elusive, especially on large scales ($\gg$1 Mpc) as the spectroscopic follow-up of $z>6$ galaxies is observationally expensive. Here we present Keck / DEIMOS optical and IRAM / NOEMA millimeter spectroscopy of a $z\sim6$ Lyman-break galaxy candidate originally discovered via broadband selection, at a projected separation of 4.65 physical Mpc (13.94 arcmin) from the …
We present the most precise estimate to date of the clustering of quasars on very small scales, based on a sample of 47 binary quasars with magnitudes of $g<20.85$ and proper transverse separations of $\sim 25\,h^{-1}$\,kpc. Our sample of binary quasars, which is about 6 times larger than any previous spectroscopically confirmed sample on these scales, is targeted using a Kernel Density Estimation technique (KDE) applied to Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) imaging over most of the SDSS area. Our sample is "complete" in that all of the KDE target pairs with $17.0 \lesssim R \lesssim 36.2\,h^{-1}…
We trace the cosmic web at redshifts 1.0 <= z <= 1.8 using the quasar data from the SDSS DR7 QSO catalogue (Schneider et al. 2010). We apply a friend-of-friend (FoF) algorithm to the quasar and random catalogues to determine systems at a series of linking lengths, and analyse richness and sizes of these systems. At the linking lengths l <= 30 Mpc/h the number of quasar systems is larger than the number of systems detected in random catalogues, and systems themselves have smaller diameters than random systems. The diameters of quasar systems are comparable to the sizes of poor galaxy superclust…
We study the dependence of quasar clustering on quasar luminosity and black hole mass by measuring the angular overdensity of photometrically selected galaxies imaged by WISE about z $\sim$ 0.8 quasars from SDSS. By measuring the quasar-galaxy cross-correlation function and using photometrically selected galaxies, we achieve a higher density of tracer objects and a more sensitive detection of clustering than measurements of the quasar autocorrelation function. We test models of quasar formation and evolution by measuring the luminosity dependence of clustering amplitude. We find a significant …
Super-Eddington mass accretion has been suggested as an efficient mechanism to grow supermassive black holes (SMBHs). We investigate the imprint left by the radiative efficiency of the super-Eddington accretion process on the clustering of quasars using a new semi-analytic model of galaxy and quasar formation based on large-volume cosmological $N$-body simulations. Our model includes a simple model for the radiative efficiency of a quasar, which imitates the effect of photon trapping for a high mass accretion rate. We find that the model of radiative efficiency affects the relation between the…
Simulations predict that gas in the intergalactic medium (IGM) is distributed in filamentary structures that connect dense galaxy clusters and form the cosmic web. These structures of predominantly ionized hydrogen are difficult to observe directly due to their lack of emitting regions. We serendipitously detected an overdensity of log N(HI) > 18.0 absorbers at z = 2.69 along the lines of sight toward a pair of background quasars. Three main absorption regions spanning ~2000 km/s (corresponding to 6.4 (h_70)^(-1) Mpc proper) are coincident in the two lines of sight, which are separated by ~90 …
We report the discovery of a quasar pair at z=5 separated by 21 arcsec. Both objects were identified as quasar candidates using simple color selection techniques applied to photometric catalogs from the CFHT Legacy Survey (CFHTLS). Spectra obtained with the MMT present no discernible offset in redshift between the two objects; on the other hand, there are clear differences in the emission line profiles and in the multiwavelength spectral energy distributions that strongly disfavor the hypothesis that they are gravitationally lensed images of a single quasar. Both quasars are surprisingly brigh…
We investigate the large-scale structure of Lyman-alpha emission intensity in the Universe at redshifts z=2-3.5 using cross-correlation techniques. Our Lya emission samples are spectra of BOSS Luminous Red Galaxies from Data Release 12 with the best fit model galaxies subtracted. We cross-correlate the residual flux in these spectra with BOSS quasars, and detect a positive signal on scales 1-15 Mpc/h. We identify and remove a source of contamination not previously accounted for, due to the effects of quasar clustering on cross-fibre light. Corrected, our quasar-Lya emission cross-correlation i…
We investigate clustering properties of quasars using a new version of our semi-analytic model of galaxy and quasar formation with state-of-the-art cosmological N-body simulations. In this study, we assume that a major merger of galaxies triggers cold gas accretion on to a supermassive black hole and quasar activity. Our model can reproduce the downsizing trend of the evolution of quasars. We find that the median mass of quasar host dark matter haloes increases with cosmic time by an order of magnitude from z=4 (a few 1e+11 Msun) to z=1 (a few 1e+12 Msun), and depends only weakly on the quasar…
We present the first measurement of the spatial clustering of mid-infrared selected obscured and unobscured quasars, using a sample in the redshift range 0.7 < z < 1.8 selected from the 9 deg^2 Bootes multiwavelength survey. Recently the Spitzer Space Telescope and X-ray observations have revealed large populations of obscured quasars that have been inferred from models of the X-ray background and supermassive black hole evolution. To date, little is known about obscured quasar clustering, which allows us to measure the masses of their host dark matter halos and explore their role in the cosmi…
We examine recent high-precision measurements of small-scale quasar clustering (at $z\sim0.5-2$ on scales of $\sim25~\mathrm{kpc/h}$) from the SDSS in the context of the MassiveBlackII (MBII) cosmological hydrodynamic simulation and conditional luminosity function (CLF) modeling. At these high luminosities ($g < 20.85$ quasars), the MBII simulation volume ($100~\mathrm{cMpc}/h$ comoving boxsize) has only 3 quasar pairs at distances of $1-4$ Mpc. The black-hole masses for the pairs range between $M_{bh}\sim1-3\times 10^{9}~M_{\odot}/h$ and the quasar hosts are haloes of $M_h\sim1-3\times10^{14}…

We investigate the spatial clustering of galaxies around quasars at redshifts from 0.6 to 1.2 using the photometric data from Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Stripe 82. The quasar and galaxy cross-correlation functions are measured through the projected galaxy number density n(r_p) on scales $0.05<r_p<20 h^-1 Mpc around quasars for a sample of 2300 quasars from Schneider et al. (2007). We detect strong clustering signals at all redshifts, and find that the clustering amplitude increases significantly with redshift. We examine the dependence of the quasar-galaxy clustering on quasar and galaxy …
We analyze the quasar two-point correlation function (2pCF) within the redshift interval $0.8<z<2.2$ using a sample of 52303 quasars selected from the recent 7th Data Release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. Our approach to 2pCF uses a concept of locally Lorentz (Fermi) frame for determination of the distance between objects and permutation method of the random catalogue generation. Assuming the spatially flat cosmological model with given $Ω_Λ=0.726$, we found that the real-space 2pCF is fitted well with the power-low model within the distance range $1<σ<35$ $h^{-1}$ Mpc with the correlation …
We examine the clustering of quasars over a wide luminosity range, by utilizing 901 quasars at $\overline{z}_{\rm phot}\sim3.8$ with $-24.73<M_{\rm 1450}<-22.23$ photometrically selected from the Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program (HSC-SSP) S16A Wide2 date release and 342 more luminous quasars at $3.4<z_{\rm spec}<4.6$ having $-28.0<M_{\rm 1450}<-23.95$ from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) that fall in the HSC survey fields. We measure the bias factors of two quasar samples by evaluating the cross-correlation functions (CCFs) between the quasar samples and 25790 bright $z\sim4$ Lym…
We present a new redshift survey, the 2dF Quasar Dark Energy Survey pilot (2QDESp), which consists of ${\approx}10000$ quasars from ${\approx}150$ deg$^2$ of the southern sky, based on VST-ATLAS imaging and 2dF/AAOmega spectroscopy. Combining our optical photometry with the WISE (W1,W2) bands we can select essentially contamination free quasar samples with $0.8{<}z{<}2.5$ and $g{<}20.5$. At fainter magnitudes, optical UVX selection is still required to reach our $g{\approx}22.5$ limit. Using both these techniques we observed quasar redshifts at sky densities up to $90$ deg$^{-2}$. By comparing…
With close pairs of quasars at different redshifts, a background quasar sightline can be used to study a foreground quasar's environment in absorption. We use a sample of 650 projected quasar pairs to study the HI Lya absorption transverse to luminous, z~2 quasars at proper separations of 30kpc < R < 1Mpc. In contrast to measurements along the line-of-sight, regions transverse to quasars exhibit enhanced HI Lya absorption and a larger variance than the ambient intergalactic medium, with increasing absorption and variance toward smaller scales. Analysis of composite spectra reveals excess absor…
We study the clustering properties of 1,307,530 AGNs/quasars in the CatWISE2020 catalog prepared using the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) and Near-Earth Object Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (NEOWISE) survey data. For angular moments $\ell \gtrapprox 10$ ($\lessapprox 18^\circ$) down to non-linear scales, the results are in agreement with the standard $Λ$CDM cosmology, with a galaxy bias roughly matching that of the NRAO VLA Sky Survey (NVSS) AGNs. We further explore the redshift dependence of the fraction of infrared bright AGNs on stellar mass, $f_{\rm IB} \sim M_*^{α_0 + α_…
The Clowes & Campusano (1991) Large Quasar Group (LQG) at <z> = 1.28 has been re-examined using the quasar data from the DR7QSO catalogue of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. In the 1991 discovery, the LQG impinged on the northern, southern and eastern limits of the survey. In the DR7QSO data, the western, northern and southern boundaries of the LQG remain essentially the same, but an extension eastwards of \sim 2 deg is indicated. In the DR7QSO data, the LQG has 34 members, with <z> = 1.28. A new group of 38 members is indicated at <z> = 1.11 and within \sim 2.0 deg of the Clowes & Campusano LQG.…
We analyze the clustering properties of quasars simulated using a semianalytic model built on the Millennium Simulation, with the goal of testing scenarios in which black hole accretion and quasar activity are triggered by galaxy mergers. When we select quasars with luminosities in the range accessible by current observations, we find that predicted values for the redshift evolution of the quasar bias agree rather well with the available data and the clustering strength depends only weakly on luminosity. This is independent of the lightcurve model assumed, since bright quasars are black holes …
We cross-correlate a cosmic microwave background (CMB) lensing map with the projected space densities of quasars to measure the bias and halo masses of a quasar sample split into obscured and unobscured populations, the first application of this method to distinct quasar subclasses. Several recent studies of the angular clustering of obscured quasars have shown that these objects likely reside in higher-mass halos compared to their unobscured counterparts. This has important implications for models of the structure and geometry of quasars, their role in growing supermassive black holes, and mu…
We have used spectra of 181 projected quasar pairs at separations $\le 1.5$ arcmins from the Sloan Digital Sky-Survey Data Release 12 in the redshift range of 2.5 to 3.5 to probe the proximity regions of the foreground quasars. We study the proximity effect both in the longitudinal as well as in the transverse directions, by carrying out a comparison of the \lya absorption lines originating from the vicinity of quasars to those originating from the general inter-galactic medium at the same redshift. We found an enhancement in the transmitted flux within 4 Mpc to the quasar in the longitudinal …
In current and future surveys, quasars play a key role. The new data will extend our knowledge of the Universe as it will be used to better constrain the cosmological model at redshift $z>1$ via baryon acoustic oscillation and redshift space distortion measurements. Here, we present the first clustering study of quasars observed by the extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey. We measure the clustering of $\sim 70,000$ quasars located in the redshift range $0.9<z<2.2$ that cover 1,168 deg$^2$. We model the clustering and produce high-fidelity quasar mock catalogues based on the BigMult…
We measure the small-scale (comoving separation 10 kpc/h < r_p < 200 kpc/h) two-point correlation function of quasars using a sample of 26 spectroscopically confirmed binary quasars at 0.6<z<2.2 from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Quasar Lens Search (SQLS). Thanks to careful candidate selections and extensive follow-up observations of the SQLS, which is aimed at constructing a complete quasar lens sample, our sample of binary quasars is also expected to be nearly complete within a specified range of angular separations and redshifts. The measured small-scale correlation function rises steeply to…
We use Shen et al.'s (2009) measurements of luminosity-dependent clustering in the SDSS Data Release 5 Quasar Catalog, at redshifts 0.4 < z < 2.5, to constrain the relation between quasar luminosity and host halo mass and to infer the duty cycle f_opt, the fraction of black holes that shine as optically luminous quasars at a given time. We assume a monotonic mean relation between quasar luminosity and host halo mass, with log-normal scatter Σ. For specified f_opt and Σ, matching the observed quasar space density determines the normalization of the luminosity-halo mass relation, from which we p…
We present a detailed study of the longitudinal proximity effect using a sample of 85 quasars spanning an emission redshift range of $3.5 \leq z_{em} \leq 4.5$ and Lyman continuum luminosity ($L_{912}$) ranging from 1.06$\times 10^{31}$ to 2.24$\times 10^{32}$ erg s$^{-1}$ Hz$^{-1}$. We use the high-quality spectra of these quasars obtained at a spectral resolution of $R\sim$ 5100 and S/N $\sim$ 30 using X-SHOOTER spectrograph mounted on the Very Large Telescope (VLT). In our analysis, we compared the transmitted flux and pixel optical depth of the Ly$α$ absorption originating from the vicinit…
We combine the most precise small scale ($< 100\, \rm h^{-1}kpc$) quasar clustering constraintsto date with recent measurements at large scales ($> 1\, \rm h^{-1}Mpc$) from the extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS) to better constrain the satellite fraction of quasars at $z\sim 1.5$ in the halo occupation formalism. We build our Halo Occupation Distribution (HOD) framework based on commonly used analytic forms for the one and two-halo terms with two free parameters: the minimum halo mass that hosts a central quasar and the fraction of satellite quasars that are within one ha…
We measure the two-point clustering of spectroscopically confirmed quasars from the final sample of the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS) on comoving scales of 4 < s < 22 Mpc/h. The sample covers 6950 deg^2 (~ 19 (Gpc/h)^3) and, over the redshift range 2.2 < z < 2.8, contains 55,826 homogeneously selected quasars, which is twice as many as in any similar work. We deduce b_Q = 3.54 +/- 0.10 ; the most precise measurement of quasar bias to date at these redshifts. This corresponds to a host halo mass of ~ 2 x 10^12 ~ M_sun/h with an implied quasar duty cycle of ~1 percent. The real-…
We study the first year of the eBOSS quasar sample in the redshift range $0.9<z<2.2$ which includes 68,772 homogeneously selected quasars. We show that the main source of systematics in the evaluation of the correlation function arises from inhomogeneities in the quasar target selection, particularly related to the extinction and depth of the imaging data used for targeting. We propose a weighting scheme that mitigates these systematics. We measure the quasar correlation function and provide the most accurate measurement to date of the quasar bias in this redshift range, $b_Q = 2.45 \pm 0.05$ …
The present paper analyses the quasar clustering using the two-point correlation function (2pCF) and the largest existing sample of photometrically selected quasars: the SDSS NBCKDE catalogue (from the SDSS DR6). A new technique of random catalogue generation was developed for this purpose, that allows to take into account the original homogeneity of the survey without knowledge of its imaging mask. When averaged over photometrical redshifts 0.8<z_phot<2.2 the 2pCF of photometrically selected quasars is found to be approximated well with the power law w(θ)=(θ/θ_0)^{-α} with θ_0=4".5+/-1".4, α=…
We study the compatibility of large quasar groups with the concordance cosmological model. Large Quasar Groups are very large spatial associations of quasars in the cosmic web, with sizes of 50-250h^-1 Mpc. In particular, the largest large quasar group known, named Huge-LQG, has a longest axis of ~860h^-1 Mpc, larger than the scale of homogeneity (~260 Mpc), which has been noted as a possible violation of the cosmological principle. Using mock catalogues constructed from the Horizon Run 2 cosmological simulation, we found that large quasar groups size, quasar member number and mean overdensity…
We use the large catalogues of haloes available for the Millennium Simulation to test whether recently merged haloes exhibit stronger large-scale clustering than other haloes of the same mass. This effect could help to understand the very strong clustering of quasars at high redshift. However, we find no statistically significant excess bias for recently merged haloes over the redshift range 2 < z < 5, with the most massive haloes showing an excess of at most ~5%. We also consider galaxies extracted from a semianalytic model built on the Millennium Simulation. At fixed stellar mass, we find an…
The Sloan Digital Sky Survey has surveyed 14,555 square degrees of the sky, and delivered over a trillion pixels of imaging data. We present the large-scale clustering of 1.6 million quasars between z = 0.5 and z = 2.5 that have been classified from this imaging, representing the highest density of quasars ever studied for clustering measurements. This data set spans ~11,000 square degrees and probes a volume of 80(Gpc/h)^3. In principle, such a large volume and medium density of tracers should facilitate high-precision cosmological constraints. We measure the angular clustering of photometric…
We explore the cosmological implications of anisotropic clustering measurements of the quasar sample from Data Release 14 of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey IV Extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS) in configuration space. The $\sim 147,000$ quasar sample observed by eBOSS offers a direct tracer of the density field and bridges the gap of previous BAO measurements between redshift $0.8<z<2.2$. By analysing the two-point correlation function characterized by clustering wedges $ξ_{\rm w_i}(s)$ and multipoles $ξ_{\ell}(s)$, we measure the angular diameter distance, Hubble parameter…
We analyze the SDSS DR12 quasar catalogue to test the large-scale smoothness in the quasar distribution. We quantify the degree of inhomogeneity in the quasar distribution using information theory based measures and find that the degree of inhomogeneity diminishes with increasing length scales which finally reach a plateau at $\sim 250 \, h^{-1}\, {\rm Mpc}$. The residual inhomogeneity at the plateau is consistent with that expected for a Poisson point process. Our results indicate that the quasar distribution is homogeneous beyond length scales of $250 \, h^{-1}\, {\rm Mpc}$.
We present measurements of the quasar two-point correlation function, ξ_{Q}, over the redshift range z=0.3-2.2 based upon data from the SDSS. Using a homogeneous sample of 30,239 quasars with spectroscopic redshifts from the DR5 Quasar Catalogue, our study represents the largest sample used for this type of investigation to date. With this redshift range and an areal coverage of approx 4,000 deg^2, we sample over 25 h^-3 Gpc^3 (comoving) assuming the current LCDM cosmology. Over this redshift range, we find that the redshift-space correlation function, xi(s), is adequately fit by a single powe…
We measure the large-scale cross-correlation of quasars with the Lyman α forest absorption in redshift space, using ~ 60000 quasar spectra from Data Release 9 (DR9) of the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS). The cross-correlation is detected over a wide range of scales, up to comoving separations r of 80 Mpc/h. For r > 15 Mpc/h, we show that the cross-correlation is well fitted by the linear theory prediction for the mean overdensity around a quasar host halo in the standard ΛCDM model, with the redshift distortions indicative of gravitational evolution detected at high confidence.…
We study the cosmic web at redshifts 1.0 <= z <= 1.8 using quasar systems based on quasar data from the SDSS DR7 QSO catalogue. Quasar systems were determined with a friend-of-friend (FoF) algorithm at a series of linking lengths. At the linking lengths l <= 30 Mpc/h the diameters of quasar systems are smaller than the diameters of random systems, and are comparable to the sizes of galaxy superclusters in the local Universe. The mean space density of quasar systems is close to the mean space density of local rich superclusters. At larger linking lengths the diameters of quasar systems are comp…
Narrowband observations have detected no Ly-alpha emission within a 70 pMpc^3 volume centered on the z = 2.168 quasar PKS 0424-131. This is in contrast to surveys of Ly-alpha emitters in the field at similar redshifts and flux limits, which indicate that tens of sources should be visible within the same volume. The observed difference indicates that the quasar environment has a significant influence on the observed density of Ly-alpha emitters. To quantify this effect we have constructed a semi-analytic model to simulate the effect of a luminous quasar on nearby Ly-alpha emitters. We find the …

We examine predictions for the quasar luminosity functions (QLF) and quasar clustering at high redshift (z > 4.75) using MassiveBlack, our new hydrodynamic cosmological simulation which includes a self-consistent model for black hole growth and feedback. We show that the model reproduces the Sloan QLF within observational constraints at z >= 5. We find that the high-z QLF is consistent with a redshift-independent occupation distribution of BHs among dark matter halos (which we provide) such that the evolution of the QLF follows that of the halo mass function. The sole exception is the bright-e…
We present a measurement of the anisotropic and isotropic Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO) from the extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey Data Release 14 quasar sample with optimal redshift weights. Applying the redshift weights improves the constraint on the BAO dilation parameter $α(z_{\rm eff})$ by 17\%. We reconstruct the evolution history of the BAO distance indicators in the redshift range of $0.8<z<2.2$. This paper is part of a set that analyses the eBOSS DR14 quasar sample.
We measure the quasar two-point correlation function over the redshift range 2.2<z<2.8 using data from the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey. We use a homogeneous subset of the data consisting of 27,129 quasars with spectroscopic redshifts---by far the largest such sample used for clustering measurements at these redshifts to date. The sample covers 3,600 square degrees, corresponding to a comoving volume of 9.7(Gpc/h)^3 assuming a fiducial LambdaCDM cosmology, and it has a median absolute i-band magnitude of -26, k-corrected to z=2. After accounting for redshift errors we find that the …
We present an anisotropic analysis of Baryon Acoustic Oscillation (BAO) signal from the SDSS-IV extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS) Data Release 14 (DR14) quasar sample. The sample consists of 147,000 quasars distributed over a redshift range of $0.8 < z < 2.2$. We apply the redshift weights technique to the clustering of quasars in this sample and achieve a 4.6 per cent measurement of the angular distance measurement $D_M$ at $z = 2.2$ and Hubble parameter $H$ at $z=0.8$. We parameterize the distance-redshift relation, relative to a fiducial model, as a quadratic expansio…
We present the measurement of the two-point cross-correlation function (CCF) of 8,198 Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 7 (DR7) quasars and 349,608 DR10 CMASS galaxies from the Baryonic Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS) at redshift <z>~0.5 (0.3<z<0.9). The cross-correlation function can be reasonably well fit by a power-law model xi_QG(r)=(r/r_0)^(-gamma) on projected scales of r_p=2-25 Mpc/h with r_0=6.61+-0.25 Mpc/h and gamma=1.69+-0.07. We estimate a quasar linear bias of b_Q=1.38+-0.10 at <z>=0.53 from the CCF measurements. This linear bias corresponds to a characteristic …
We present constraints on local primordial non-Gaussianity (PNG), parametrized through $f^{\rm loc}_{\rm NL}$, using the Sloan Digital Sky Survey IV extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey Data Release 14 quasar sample. We measure and analyze the anisotropic clustering of the quasars in Fourier space, testing for the scale-dependent bias introduced by primordial non-Gaussianity on large scales. We derive and employ a power spectrum estimator using optimal weights that account for the redshift evolution of the PNG signal. We find constraints of $-51<f^{\rm loc}_{\rm NL}<21$ at 95% conf…
After quasars ionize intergalactic HeII at z~3, a large radiation field builds up above the HeII ionization edge. Unlike the background responsible for HI ionizations, this field should be highly variable, thanks to the scarcity of bright quasars and the relatively short attenuation lengths (~50 Mpc) of these high-energy photons. Recent observations of the HeII and HI Lyman-alpha forests show that this background does indeed vary strongly, with substantial fluctuations on scales as small as ~2 Mpc. Here we show that such spatial fluctuation scales are naturally expected in any model in which t…
Cluster analysis is the distribution of objects into different groups or more precisely the partitioning of a data set into subsets (clusters) so that the data in subsets share some common trait according to some distance measure. Unlike classi cation, in clustering one has to rst decide the optimum number of clusters and then assign the objects into different clusters. Solution of such problems for a large number of high dimensional data points is quite complicated and most of the existing algorithms will not perform properly. In the present work a new clustering technique applicable to large…
We measure the growth rate and its evolution using the anisotropic clustering of the extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS) Data Release 14 (DR14) quasar sample, which includes $148\,659$ quasars covering the wide redshift range of $0.8 < z < 2.2$ and a sky area of $2112.90$ $\rm deg^2$. To optimise measurements we deploy a redshift-dependent weighting scheme, which allows us to avoid binning, and perform the data analysis consistently including the redshift evolution across the sample. We perform the analysis in Fourier space, and use the redshift evolving power spectrum mul…
Public data from the 2dF quasar survey (2QZ) and 2dF/SDSS LRG & QSO (2SLAQ), with their vast reservoirs of spectroscopically located and identified sources, afford us the chance to more accurately study their real space correlations in the hopes of identifying the physical processes that trigger quasar activity. We have used these two public databases to measure the projected cross correlation, $ω_p$, between quasars and luminous red galaxies. We find the projected two-point correlation to have a fitted clustering radius of $r_0, = 5.3 \pm 0.6 $ and a slope, $γ=1.83 \pm 0.42 $ on scales from 0…
We compute the cross-correlation between a sample of 14,000 radio-loud AGN (RLAGN) with redshifts between 0.4 and 0.8 selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey and a reference sample of 1.2 million luminous red galaxies in the same redshift range. We quantify how the clustering of radio-loud AGN depends on host galaxy mass and on radio luminosity. Radio-loud AGN are clustered more strongly on all scales than control samples of radio-quiet galaxies with the same stellar masses and redshifts, but the differences are largest on scales less than 1 Mpc. In addition, the clustering amplitude of the…
We have identified 469 MgII doublet systems having W_r >= 0.02 Å in 252 Keck/HIRES and UVES/VLT quasar spectra over the redshift range 0.1 < z < 2.6. Using the largest sample yet of 188 weak MgII systems (0.02 Å <= W_r < 0.3 Å), we calculate their absorber redshift path density, dN/dz. We find clear evidence of evolution, with dN/dz peaking at z ~ 1.2, and that the product of the absorber number density and cross section decreases linearly with increasing redshift; weak MgII absorbers seem to vanish above z ~ 2.7. If the absorbers are ionized by the UV background, we estimate number densities …
