We embed a holographic model of an U(1) charged fluid with Galilean invariance in string theory and calculate its specific heat capacity and Prandtl number. Such theories are generated by a R-symmetry twist along a null direction of a N=1 superconformal theory. We study the hydrodynamic properties of such systems employing ideas from the fluid-gravity correspondence.
We study hydrodynamics of four-dimensional non-conformal holographic plasma with non-equal central charges $c\ne a$ at the ultraviolet fixed point. We compute equation of state, the speed of sound waves, transport coefficients (shear and bulk viscosities), and discuss causality. We study the asymptotic character of the hydrodynamic series for the homogeneous and isotropic expansion of the plasma. We perform computations for finite $c-a\ne 0$, but to leading nonvanishing order in the conformal symmetry breaking coupling.
We examine the hydrodynamic limit of non-conformal branes using the recently developed precise holographic dictionary. We first streamline the discussion of holography for backgrounds that asymptote locally to non-conformal brane solutions by showing that all such solutions can be obtained from higher dimensional asymptotically locally AdS solutions by suitable dimensional reduction and continuation in the dimension. As a consequence, many holographic results for such backgrounds follow from the corresponding results of the Asymptotically AdS case. In particular, the hydrodynamics of non-confo…
We study the effect of conformal anomalies on the hydrodynamic description of conformal field theories in even spacetime dimensions. We consider equilibrium curved backgrounds characterized by a time-like Killing vector and construct a local low energy effective action that captures the conformal anomalies. Using as a special background the Rindler spacetime we derive a formula for the anomaly effect on the hydrodynamic pressure. We find that this anomalous effect is only due to the Euler central charge.
We use the AdS/CFT correspondence to study first-order relativistic viscous magneto-hydrodynamics of (2+1) dimensional conformal magnetic fluids. It is shown that the first order magneto-hydrodynamics constructed following Landau and Lifshitz from the positivity of the entropy production is inconsistent. We propose additional contributions to the entropy motivated dissipative current and, correspondingly, new dissipative transport coefficients. We use the strongly coupled M2-brane plasma in external magnetic field to show that the new magneto-hydrodynamics leads to self-consistent results in t…
In recent work (arXiv:0712.2456, arXiv:0712.2451) the energy-momentum tensor for the N=4 SYM fluid was computed up to second derivative terms using holographic methods. The aim of this note is to propose an entropy current (accurate up to second derivative terms) consistent with this energy-momentum tensor and to explicate its relation with the existing theories of relativistic hydrodynamics. In order to achieve this, we first develop a Weyl-covariant formalism which simplifies the study of conformal hydrodynamics. This naturally leads us to a proposal for the entropy current of an arbitrary c…
Starting from a chiral conformal Haag-Kastler net on 2 dimensional Minkowski space we construct associated charged pointlike localized fields which intertwine between arbitrary superselection sectors with finite statistics of the theory. This amounts to a proof of the Spin-Statistics theorem, the PCT theorem and the existence of operator product expansions. This paper generalizes similar results of a recently published paper by Fredenhagen and the author \cite{FrJ} from the neutral vacuum sector to the the full theory with arbitrary charge and finite statistics.
We extend the recent work on fluid-gravity correspondence to charged black-branes by determining the metric duals to arbitrary charged fluid configuration up to second order in the boundary derivative expansion. We also derive the energy-momentum tensor and the charge current for these configurations up to second order in the boundary derivative expansion. We find a new term in the charge current when there is a bulk Chern-Simons interaction thus resolving an earlier discrepancy between thermodynamics of charged rotating black holes and boundary hydrodynamics. We have also confirmed that all o…
We study second-order hydrodynamic transport in strongly coupled non-conformal field theories with holographic gravity duals in asymptotically anti-de Sitter space. We first derive new Kubo formulae for five second-order transport coefficients in non-conformal fluids in $(3+1)$ dimensions. We then apply them to holographic RG flows induced by scalar operators of dimension $Δ=3$. For general background solutions of the dual bulk geometry, we find explicit expressions for the five transport coefficients at infinite coupling and show that a specific combination, $\tilde{H}=2ητ_π-2(κ-κ^*)-λ_2$, al…
The conformal weights of spherical twist operators at non--zero (Euclidean) chemical potential are computed for free Dirac fields in arbitrary dimensions. An image technique, equivalent to replicas, is again used to obtain the $n$--fold cover quantities. The proof of a conjecture made by Bueno, Myers and Witczac--Krempa regarding the relation between the conformal weights and a corner coefficient in the Rényi entropy, given before for scalar fields, is extended to the fermion case. The variation of the weights with chemical potential indicates phase changes.
In the previous paper we studied the transport coefficients of Quark-Gluon Plasma in finite temperature and finite density in vector and tensor modes. In this paper, we extend it to the scalar modes. We work out the decoupling problem and hydrodynamic analysis for the sound mode in charged AdS black hole and calculate the sound velocity, the charge susceptibility and the electrical conductivity. We find that Einstein relation among the conductivity, the diffusion constant and the susceptibility holds exactly.
We consider the hydrodynamics of relativistic conformal field theories at finite temperature and its slow motions limit, where it reduces to the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. The symmetries of the equations and their solutions are analyzed. We construct exact solutions with finite time singularities of one-dimensional relativistic conformal hydrodynamic motions, and use them to generate multi-dimensional solutions via special conformal transformations. These solutions, however, are shown to have no non-trivial slow motions limit. A simple non-equilibrium steady state in the form of a…
We consider hydrodynamics of N=4 supersymmetric SU(N_c) Yang-Mills plasma at a nonzero density of R-charge. In the regime of large N_c and large 't Hooft coupling the gravity dual description involves an asymptotically Anti- de Sitter five-dimensional charged black hole solution of Behrnd, Cvetic and Sabra. We compute the shear viscosity as a function of chemical potentials conjugated to the three U(1) \subset SO(6)_R charges. The ratio of the shear viscosity to entropy density is independent of the chemical potentials and is equal to 1/4π. For a single charge black hole we also compute the th…
In the Einestein-dilaton theory with a Liouville potential parameterized by $η$, we find a Schwarzschild-type black hole solution. This black hole solution, whose asymptotic geometry is described by the warped metric, is thermodynamically stable only for $0 \le η< 2$. Applying the gauge/gravity duality, we find that the dual gauge theory represents a non-conformal thermal system with the equation of state depending on $η$. After turning on the bulk vector fluctuations with and without a dilaton coupling, we calculate the charge diffusion constant, which indicates that the life time of the quas…
The subject of relativistic hydrodynamics is explored using the tools of gauge/gravity duality. A brief literature review of AdS/CFT and gauge/gravity duality is presented first. This is followed by a pedagogical introduction to the use of these methods in determining hydrodynamic dispersion relations, $w(q)$, of perturbations in a strongly coupled fluid. Shear and sound mode perturbations are examined in a special class of gravity duals: those where the matter supporting the metric is scalar in nature. Analytical solutions (to order $q^4$ and $q^3$ respectively) for the shear and sound mode d…
We study the effects of the Chern-Simons term in the hydrodynamics of the five-dimensional Reissner-Nordstrom-AdS background. We work out the decoupling problem of the equations of motion and calculate the retarded Green functions explicitly. We then find that the Chern-Simons term induces the magnetic conductivity caused by the anomaly effect. It is increasing function of temperature running from a non-zero value at zero temperature to the twice the value at infinite temperature.
We study 4-dimensional non-charged and charged spherically symmetric spacetimes in conformal teleparallel equivalent of general relativity. We apply the gravitational field equations in non-charged and charged spacetimes to the diagonal and non-diagonal vierbeins and derive their sets of the non-linear differential equations. It is demonstrated that the Schwarzschild, for the non-charged case, and the Reissner-Nordström, for the charged case, are the only black hole solutions for the spherically symmetric case in the framework of the conformal teleparallel equivalent of general relativity theo…
I compute the conformal weights of the twist operators of free scalar fields for charged Rényi entropy in both odd and even dimensions. Explicit expressions can be found, in odd dimensions as a function of the chemical potential in the absence of a conical singularity and thence by images for all integer coverings. This method, developed some time ago, is equivalent, in results, to the replica technique. A review is given. The same method applies for even dimensions but a general form is more immediately available. For no chemical potential, the the closed form in the covering order is written…
In this work we study wave propagation in dissipative relativistic fluids described by a simplified set of the 2nd order viscous conformal hydrodynamic equations. Small amplitude waves are studied within the linearization approximation while waves with large amplitude are investigated using the reductive perturbation method. Our results indicate the presence of a "soliton-like" wave solution in 2nd order conformal hydrodynamics despite the presence of dissipation and relaxation effects.
We show that the recently constructed holographic duals of conformal non-relativistic theories behave hydrodynamically at long distances, and construct the gravitational dual of fluid flows in a long-wavelength approximation. We compute the thermal conductivity of the holographic conformal non-relativistic fluid. The corresponding Prandtl number is equal to one.
We study Abelian Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory in three-dimensional $AdS$ black hole backgrounds for both integer and non-integer Chern-Simons coupling. Such theories can be derived from various string theory constructions, which we review in the present work. In particular we find exact solutions in the low frequency, low momentum limit, $ω, k \ll T$(hydrodynamic limit). Using the holographic principle, we translate our results into correlation functions of vector and scalar operators in the dual strongly coupled 1+1-dimensional quantum field theory with a chiral anomaly at non-zero temperature…
Extending researches on Hawking radiation to conformal gravity theory, we discuss Hawking radiation of different particles across charged rotating AdS black holes in conformal gravity, including charged massive particles, complex scalar and spin-$1/2$ Dirac particles. To make the study of rotating black holes' tunneling radiation get rid of the dependence on dragging coordinate systems, we investigate the radiation without dragging coordinate transformations. The previous geodesic derivation existed some shortcomings. Not only did geodesics of massive and massless particles are derived by usin…
We present some exact solutions of relativistic second-order hydrodynamic equations in theories with conformal symmetry. Starting from a spherically expanding solution in ideal hydrodynamics, we take into account general conformal second-order corrections, and construct, for the first time, fully analytical axisymmetric exact solutions including the case with nonzero vorticity. These solutions are time-reversible despite having a nonvanishing shear stress tensor and provide a useful quantitative measure of the second-order effects in relativistic hydrodynamics.
The covariant phase technique is used to compute the constraint algebra of the stationary axisymmetric charged black hole. A standard Virasoro subalgebra with corresponding central charge is constructed at a Killing horizon with Carlip's boundary conditions. For the Kerr-Newman black hole and the Kerr-Newman-AdS black hole, the density of states determined by conformal fields theory methods yields the statistical entropy which agrees with the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy.
Standard textbooks will state that hydrodynamics requires near-equilibrium to be applicable. Recently, however, out-of-equilibrium attractor solutions for hydrodynamics have been found in kinetic theory and holography in systems with a high degree of symmetry, suggesting the possibility of a genuine out-of-equilibrium formulation of hydrodynamics. This work demonstrates that attractor solutions also occur in non-conformal kinetic theory and spatially non-homogeneous systems, potentially having important implications for the interpretation of experimental data in heavy-ion and proton-proton col…
We investigate the convergence of relativistic hydrodynamics in charged fluids, within the framework of holography. On the one hand, we consider the analyticity properties of the dispersion relations of the hydrodynamic modes on the complex frequency and momentum plane and on the other hand, we perform a perturbative expansion of the dispersion relations in small momenta to a very high order. We see that the locations of the branch points extracted using the first approach are in good quantitative agreement with the radius of convergence extracted perturbatively. We see that for different valu…
The extended thermodynamics of static charged AdS black holes in conformal gravity is analyzed. The $P-V$ criticality of these black holes has some unusual features. There exists a single critical point with critical temperature $T_c$ and critical pressure $P_c$. At fixed $T>T_c$ (or at fixed $P>P_c$), there are two zeroth order phase transition points but no first order phase transition points. The systems favors large pressure states at constant $T$, or high temperature states at constant $P$.
We consider second-order viscous hydrodynamics in conformal field theories at finite temperature. We show that conformal invariance imposes powerful constraints on the form of the second-order corrections. By matching to the AdS/CFT calculations of correlators, and to recent results for Bjorken flow obtained by Heller and Janik, we find three (out of five) second-order transport coefficients in the strongly coupled N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. We also discuss how these new coefficents can arise within the kinetic theory of weakly coupled conformal plasmas. We point out that the Muelle…
In this paper we present the details of our previous work on exact solutions in second-order conformal hydrodynamics together with a number of new solutions found by mapping Minkowski space onto various curved spacetimes such as anti-de Sitter space and hyperbolic space. We analytically show how the solutions of ideal hydrodynamics are modified by the second-order effects including vorticity. We also find novel boost-invariant exact solutions which exist only in second-order hydrodynamics and have an unusual dependence on the proper time.
We show how to generate non-trivial solutions to the conformally invariant, relativistic fluid dynamic equations by appealing to the Weyl covariance of the stress tensor. We use this technique to show that a recently studied solution of the relativistic conformally invariant Navier-Stokes equations in four-dimensional Minkowski space can be recast as a static flow in three-dimensional de Sitter space times a line. The simplicity of the de Sitter form of the flow enables us to consider several generalizations of it, including flows in other spacetime dimensions, second order viscous corrections…
It is recently conjectured that generic non-extremal Kerr black hole could be holographically dual to a hidden conformal field theory in two dimensions. Moreover, it is known that there are two CFT duals (pictures) to describe the charged rotating black holes which correspond to angular momentum $J$ and electric charge $Q$ of the black hole. Furthermore these two pictures can be incorporated by the CFT duals (general picture) that are generated by $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$ modular group. The general conformal structure can be revealed by looking at charged scalar wave equation in some appropriate val…
We show that one can obtain asymptotic evolving boost-invariant geometries in a simple manner from the corresponding static solutions. We exhibit the procedure in the case of a supergravity dual of R-charged hydrodynamics by turning on a supergravity gauge field and analyze the relevant thermodynamics. Finally we consider turning on the dilaton and show that electric and magnetic modes in the plasma equilibrate before reaching asymptotic proper times.
We obtain the charged rotating black hole in conformal gravity. The metric is asymptotic to the (anti-)de Sitter spacetime. The contribution to the metric from the charges has a slower falloff than that in the Kerr-Newman AdS black hole. We analyse the global structure and obtain all the thermodynamical quantities including the mass, angular momentum, electric/magnetic charges and their thermodynamical conjugates. We verify that the first law of thermodynamics holds. We also obtain the new neutral rotating black holes that are beyond Einstein metrics. In contrast to the static ones, these rota…
We show how the motion of a charged particle near the horizon of an extreme Reissner-Nordstrom black hole can lead to different forms of conformal mechanics, depending on the choice of the time coordinate.
We study the hydrodynamic properties of strongly coupled $SU(N)$ Yang-Mills theory of the D1-brane at finite temperature and at a non-zero density of R-charge in the framework of gauge/gravity duality. The gravity dual description involves a charged black hole solution of an Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton system in 3 dimensions which is obtained by a consistent truncation of the spinning D1-brane in 10 dimensions. We evaluate thermal and electrical conductivity as well as the bulk viscosity as a function of the chemical potential conjugate to the R-charges of the D1-brane. We show that the ratio of …
The role of the conformal group in electrodynamics in four space-time dimensions is re-examined. As a pedagogic example we use the application of conformal transformations to find the electromagnetic field for a charged particle moving with a constant relativistic acceleration from the Coulomb electric field for the particle at rest. We also re-consider the reformulation of Maxwell's equations on the projective cone, which is isomorphic to a conformal compactification on Minkowski space, so that conformal transformations, belonging to the group O(4,2), are realised linearly. The resulting equa…
We calculate the scaling dimensions of operators with large global charge and spin in 2+1 dimensional conformal field theories. By the state-operator correspondence, these operators correspond to superfluids with vortices and can be systematically studied using effective field theory. As the spin increases from zero to the unitarity bound, the superfluid state corresponding to the lowest dimension operator passes through three distinct regimes: (1) a single phonon, (2) two vortices, and (3) multiple vortices. We also calculate correlation functions with two such operators and the Noether curre…
We use holographic correspondence to study transport of the conformal plasma in ${\mathbb R}^{2,1}$ in a phase with a spontaneously broken global $Z_2$ symmetry. The dual black branes in a Poincare patch of asymptotically $AdS_4$ have "hair" -- a condensate of the order parameter for the broken symmetry. This hair affects both the hydrodynamic and the nonhydrodynamic quasinormal modes of the black branes. Nonetheless, the shear viscosity of the conformal order is universal, the bulk viscosity vanishes and the speed of the sound waves is $c_s^2=\frac 12$. We compute the low-lying spectrum of th…
We discuss the quantization of a self-interacting string consisting of maximally charged matter. We construct the Hamiltonian in the non-relativistic limit by expanding around a static solution of the Einstein-Maxwell field equations. Conformal symmetry is broken on the worldsheet, but a subgroup of the conformal group acts as the gauge group of the theory. Thus, the Faddeev-Popov quantization procedure of fixing the gauge is applicable. We calculate the Hamiltonian and show that, if properly quantized, the system possesses a well-defined ground state and the spacing of its energy levels is of…
We show that relativistic hydrodynamics in Minkowski space-time has intrinsic ambiguity in second order viscosity parameters in the Landau-Lifshitz frame. This stems from the possibility of improvements of energy-momentum tensor. There exist at least two viscosity parameters which can be removed by using this ambiguity in scale invariant hydrodynamics in (1+3) dimension, and seemingly non-conformal hydrodynamic theories can be hiddenly conformal invariant.
In this paper we obtain holographic formulas for the transport coefficients $κ$ and $τ_π$ present in the second-order derivative expansion of relativistic hydrodynamics in curved spacetime associated with a non-conformal strongly coupled plasma described holographically by an Einstein+Scalar action in the bulk. We compute these coefficients as functions of the temperature in a bottom-up non-conformal model that is tuned to reproduce lattice QCD thermodynamics at zero baryon chemical potential. We directly compute, besides the speed of sound, 6 other transport coefficients that appear at second…
We develop a hydrodynamic approach to non-equilibrium conformal field theory. We study non-equilibrium steady states in the context of one-dimensional conformal field theory perturbed by the $T\bar T$ irrelevant operator. By direct quantum computation, we show, to first order in the coupling, that a relativistic hydrodynamic emerges, which is a simple modification of one-dimensional conformal fluids. We show that it describes the steady state and its approach, and we provide the main characteristics of the steady state, which lies between two shock waves. The velocities of these shocks are mod…
The nonextremal Kerr black holes have been considered to be holographically dual to two-dimensional (2D) conformal field theories (CFTs). In this paper, we extend the holography to the case of an asymptotically anti--de Sitter (AdS) rotating charged black holes in $f$($T$) gravity, where $f(T) = T + αT^2$, where $α$ is a constant. We find that the scalar wave radial equation at the near-horizon region implies the existence of the 2D conformal symmetries. We note that the $2π$ identification of the azimuthal angle $ϕ$ in the black hole line element, corresponds to a spontaneous breaking of the …
Lorentz proposed a classical model of electron in which electron was assumed to have only 'electromagnetic mass'. We modeled electron as charged anisotropic perfect fluid sphere admitting non static conformal symmetry. It is noticed that the pressure and density fail to be regular at the origin but effective gravitational mass is regular everywhere and vanishes at the limit r->0 i.e. it does not have to tolerate the problem of singularity. Further, we have matched interior metric with exterior (Reissner-Nordström) metric and determine the values of the parameters k and r_0 (occurring in the so…
We report the continuum limits of the speed of sound, c_s, and the specific heat at constant volume, c_v, in quenched QCD at temperatures of 2Tc and 3Tc. At these temperatures, c_s is within 2-sigma of the ideal gas value, whereas c_v differs significantly from the ideal gas. However, both are compatible with results expected in a theory with conformal symmetry. We investigate effective measures of conformal symmetry in the high temperature phase of QCD.
We consider the hydrodynamics of relativistic conformal field theories at finite temperature. We show that the limit of slow motions of the ideal hydrodynamics leads to the non-relativistic incompressible Euler equation. For viscous hydrodynamics we show that the limit of slow motions leads to the non-relativistic incompressible Navier-Stokes equation. We explain the physical reasons for the reduction and discuss the implications. We propose that conformal field theories provide a fundamental microscopic viewpoint of the equations and the dynamics governed by them.
In this talk we review analytical and numerical studies of hydrodynamic vortices in conformal fluids and their gravity duals. We present two conclusions. First, (3+1)-dimensional turbulence is within the range of validity of the AdS/hydrodynamics correspondence. Second, the local equilibrium of the fluid is equivalent to the ultralocality of the holographic correspondence, in the sense that the bulk data at a given point is determined, to any given precision, by the boundary data at a single point together with a fixed number of derivatives. With this criterion we see that the cores of hot and…
We obtain a newly charged BBMB (Bocharova-Bronnikov-Melnikov-Bekenstein) black hole solution from the Einstein-Weyl-Maxwell-conformal (conformally coupled) scalar theory with a positive Weyl coupling parameter $m^2_2$ numerically. This solution has a primary scalar hair, compared to a secondary scalar hair in the charged BBMB black hole solution. The limiting case of $m_2^2\to\infty$ leads to the series form of the charged BBMB black hole solution. However, for $m^2_2<0$, we could not obtain any asymptotically flat black hole solution with scalar hair.
We find an analytical solution to relativistic viscous hydrodynamics for a 1+1 dimensional Landau flow profile. We consider relativistic Navier-Stokes form of the dissipative hydrodynamic equation, for a non-conformal system with a constant speed of sound, and employ the obtained solution to fit rapidity spectrum of observed pions in $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=$ 200, 17.3, 12.3, 8.76, 7.62, 6.27, 4.29, 3.83, 3.28 and 2.63 GeV collision energies. We find that at the freeze-out hypersurface with improved Landau's freeze-out prescription, the viscous corrections do not affect the rapidity spectra. We demonst…
We analyze the dynamics of a four-dimensional null hypersurface in a five-dimensional bulk spacetime with Einstein-Yang-Mills fields. In an appropriate ansatz, the projection of the field equations onto the hypersurface takes the form of conservation laws for relativistic hydrodynamics with global non-abelian charges. A Chern-Simons term in the bulk action corresponds to anomalies in the global charges, with a vorticity term arising in the hydrodynamics. We derive the entropy current and obtain unique expressions for some of the leading-order transport coefficients (in the abelian case, all of…
Extending previous work on the formation and the evaporation of black holes in conformal gravity, in the present paper we study the gravitational collapse of a spherically symmetric and electrically charged thin shell of radiation. The process creates a singularity-free black hole. Assuming that in the evaporation process the charge $Q$ is constant, the final product of the evaporation is an extremal remnant with $M=Q$, which is reached in an infinite amount of time. We also discuss the issue of singularity and thermodynamics of black holes in Weyl's conformal gravity.
A new class of four-dimensional, hairy, stationary solutions of the Einstein-Maxwell-Lambda system with a conformally coupled scalar field is constructed in this paper. The metric belongs to the Plebanski-Demianski family and hence its static limit has the form of the charged C-metric. It is shown that, in the static case, a new family of hairy black holes arises. They turn out to be cohomogeneity-two, with horizons that are neither Einstein nor homogenous manifolds. The conical singularities in the C-metric can be removed due to the back reaction of the scalar field providing a new kind of re…
This is an extended version of the previous paper (hep-th/0701272). Quantum fields near horizons can be described in terms of an infinite set of two-dimensional conformal fields. We first generalize the method of Christensen and Fulling to charged black holes to derive fluxes of energy and charge. These fluxes can be obtained by employing a conformal field theory technique. We then apply this technique to obtain the fluxes of higher-spin currents and show that the thermal distribution of Hawking radiation from a charged black hole can be completely reproduced by investigating transformation pr…
This letter is dedicated to providing proof of two statements concerning the gradient expansion of relativistic hydrodynamics. The first statement is that \textit{the ordering of transverse derivatives is irrelevant in the gradient expansion of a non-conformal fluid}. The second statement is that \textit{the longitudinal projection of the Weyl covariant derivative can be eliminated in the gradient expansion of a conformal fluid}. This second statement does not apply to curvature tensors. In the conformal case, we know that the ordering of Weyl covariant derivatives is irrelevant in the gradien…
