Identical interactions found in the three families of quarks and leptons suggest the presence of a horizontal symmetry. We discuss how such a symmetry can be tested by measuring the decay rates of Higgs into fermion pairs, and the Higgs production cross section. Depending on the details, there is a chance that the decay widths to the bottom-pair and the tau-pair may be down by more than a factor of 3 or more compared to the usual values, and the fusion production cross section of the Higgs also altered. Whatever the outcome, such a test also serves to constraint horizontal symmetry models.
An extended spin-space model in $7+1$ dimensions is presented that describes the standard-model electroweak quark sector. Up to four generations of massless and massive quarks and two-Higgs doublets derive from the associated representation space, in addition to the W- and Z-vector bosons. Other mass operators are obtained that put restrictions on additional non-Higgs scalars and their vacuum expectation value. After symmetry breaking, the scalar components give rise to a hierarchy effect vertically (within doublets) associated to the Higgs fields, and horizontally (within generations) associa…
We extend the nonsupersymmetric SO(10) grand unification theories by adding a horizontal symmetry, which connects the three generations of fermions. Without committing to any specific symmetry group, we investigate the 1-loop renormalization group evolutions of the gauge couplings with one and two intermediate breaking scales. We find that depending on the SO(10) breaking chains, gauge coupling unification is compatible with only a handful of choices of representations of the Higgs bosons under the horizontal symmetry.
We propose a novel process where singly charged Higgs bosons are produced in a same-sign pair via vector boson fusion at hadron colliders in two Higgs doublet models. The process directly relates to the global symmetry structure of the Higgs potential. The produced charged Higgs bosons predominantly decay into a tau lepton and the neutrino or into a pair of top and bottom quarks, depending on the type of Yukawa interactions. We evaluate the signal and the background for the both cases at the CERN Large Hadron Collider and future higher-energy hadron colliders. We find that the process can be f…
The first LHC run has confirmed the Standard Model as the correct theory at the electroweak scale, and the existence of a Higgs-like particle associated with the spontaneous breaking of the electroweak gauge symmetry. These lectures overview the present knowledge on the Higgs boson and discuss alternative scenarios of electroweak symmetry breaking which are already being constrained by the experimental data.
We present a model of composite Dark Matter (DM), in which a new QCD-like confining "hypercolor" sector generates naturally stable hyperbaryons as DM candidates and at the same time provides mass to new weakly coupled gauge bosons $H$ that serve as DM mediators, coupling the hyperbaryons to the Standard Model (SM) fermions. By an appropriate choice of the $H$ gauge symmetry as a horizontal $SU(2)_h$ SM flavor symmetry, we show how the $H$ gauge bosons can be identified with the horizontal gauge bosons recently put forward as an explanation for discrepancies in rare $B$-meson decays. We find th…
We construct a three-Higgs doublet model with a flavour non-universal ${\rm U}(1)\times \mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry. That symmetry induces suppressed flavour-changing interactions mediated by neutral scalars. New scalars with masses below the TeV scale can still successfully negotiate the constraints arising from flavour data. Such a model can thus encourage direct searches for extra Higgs bosons in the future collider experiments, and includes a non-trivial flavour structure.
One of the most popular extensions of the Standard Model is the Two-Higgs-Doublet model (2HDM), in which a second Higgs doublet is added to the conventional Standard Model particle content. 2HDM's with a softly broken $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry avoid flavour-changing neutral Higgs currents at tree-level. They also comprise the Higgs sector of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model. Current Higgs observables put strong constraints on these models. We present global fits to these data and combine them with information from theoretical bounds, electroweak precision observables and the most import…
We investigate a new scenario of the two Higgs doublet model, where the current experimental data for the electroweak rho parameter and those for the Higgs boson couplings can be simultaneously explained. In this scenario, the two Higgs doublet model is supposed to be a low energy effective theory up to a high energy scale $Λ$, above which a fundamental theory should appear. It is assumed that the Higgs potential respects a global symmetry at $Λ$ (the twisted custodial symmetry), which is to be given as a consequence of the global symmetry structure of the fundamental theory above $Λ$. By the …
We study lepton flavor violating Higgs decays in two models, with the recently found hint for Higgs $\to μτ$ at CMS as a benchmark value for the branching ratio. The first model uses the discrete flavor symmetry group $A_4$, broken at the electroweak scale, while the second is renormalizable and based on the Abelian gauge group $L_μ- L_τ$. Within the models we find characteristic predictions for other non-standard Higgs decay modes, charged lepton flavor violating decays and correlations of the branching ratios with neutrino oscillation parameters.
We study Higgs and dark matter physics in the type-II two-Higgs-doublet model (2HDM) with an extra U(1)_H gauge symmetry, inspired by the E_6 grand unified theory (GUT). From the viewpoint of the bottom-up approach, the additional U(1)_H gauge symmetry plays a crucial role in avoiding the tree-level flavor changing neutral currents mediated by neutral Higgs bosons in general 2HDMs. In the model with U(1)_H gauge symmetry, which has Type-II Yukawa couplings, we have to introduce additional chiral fermions that are charged under the U(1)_H gauge symmetry as well as under the Standard-Model (SM) …
The largest global symmetry that can be made local in the Standard Model + 3$ν_R$ while being compatible with Pati-Salam unification is $SU(3)_H\times U(1)_{B-L}$. The gauge bosons of this theory would induce flavour effects involving both quarks and leptons, and are a potential candidate to explain the recent reports of lepton universality violation in rare B meson decays. In this letter we characterise this type of models and show how they can accommodate the data and naturally be within reach of direct searches.
We study the contributions of supersymmetric models with a $U(1)$ horizontal symmetry and only spontaneous CP breaking to various lepton flavor observables, such as $μ\to eγ$ and the electron electric dipole moment. We show that both a horizontal symmetry and a lack of explicit CP violation can alleviate the existing bounds from such observables. The undetermined $\mathcal{O}(1)$ coefficients in such mass matrix models muddle the interpretation of the bounds from various flavor observables. To overcome this, we define a new fine-tuning measure for different observables in such setups. This all…
