We report on three key processes involving atomic step motion during the dewetting of thin solid films: (i) the growth of an isolated island nucleated far from a hole, (ii) the spreading of a monolayer rim, and (iii) the zipping of a monolayer island along a straight dewetting front. Kinetic Monte Carlo results are in good agreement with simple analytical models assuming diffusion-limited dynamics.
The dewetting dynamics of an ultrathin film is studied in the presence of evaporation - or reaction - of adatoms on the substrate. KMC simulations are in good agreement with an analytical model with diffusion, rim facetting, and substrate sublimation. As sublimation is increased, we find a transition from the usual dewetting regime where the front slows down with time, to a sublimation-controlled regime where the front velocity is approximately constant. The rim width exhibits an unexpected non-monotonous behavior, with a maximum in time.
An evolution partial differential equation for the surface of a non-wetting single-crystal film in an attractive substrate potential is derived and used to study the dynamics of a pinhole for the varying initial depth of a pinhole and the strengths of the potential and the surface energy anisotropy. The results of the simulations demonstrate how the corresponding parameters may lead to complete or partial dewetting of the film. Anisotropy of the surface energy, through faceting of the pinhole walls, is found to most drastically affect the time to film rupture. In particular, the similations su…
Stability of thin lubricating fluid coated slippery surfaces depends on the surface energy of the underlying solid surface. High energy solid surfaces, coated with thin lubricating oil, lead to the dewetting of the oil films upon depositing aqueous drops on it. The total surface energy, which is due to the long range and short range interactions, also predict the instability of thin lubricating films under the given condition. In this article, we present experimental study of dewetting of thin lubricating oil films sandwiched between hydrophilic solid surface and aqueous drops. Fluorescence im…
Practical applications of nanocrystalline metallic thin films are often limited by instabilities. In addition to grain growth, the thin film itself can become unstable and collapse into islands through solid-state dewetting. Selective alloying can improve nanocrystalline stability, but the impact of this approach on dewetting is not clear. In this study, two alloys that exhibit nanocrystalline thermal stability as ball milled powders are evaluated as thin films. While both alloys demonstrated dewetting behavior following annealing, the severity decreased in more dilute compositions. Ultimately…
The fluid dynamics of the classical dewetting instability in ultrathin films is a non-linear process. However, the physical manifestation of the instability in terms of characteristic length and time scales can be described by a linearized form of the initial conditions of the films's dynamics. Alternately, the thermodynamic approach based on equating the rate of free energy decrease to the viscous dissipation [de Gennes, C. R. Acad. Paris.v298, 1984] can give similar information. Here we have evaluated dewetting in the presence of thermocapillary forces arising from a film-thickness (h) depen…
The surface evolution model based on geometric partial differential equation is used to numerically study the kinetics of dewetting and dynamic morphologies for the localized pinhole defect in the surface of the ultrathin solid film with the strongly anisotropic surface energy. Depending on parameters such as the initial depth and width of the pinole, the strength of the attractive substrate potential and the strength of the surface energy anisotropy, the pinhole may either extend to the substrate and thus rupture the film, or evolve to the quasiequilibrium shape while the rest of the film sur…
We show here that the morphological pathway of spontaneous dewetting of ultrathin Ag films on SiO2 under nanosecond laser melting is found to be film thickness dependent. For films with thickness h between 2 <= h <= 9.5 nm, the morphology during the intermediate stages of dewetting consisted of bicontinuous structures. For films 11.5 <= h <= 20 nm, the intermediate stages consisted of regularly-sized holes. Measurement of the characteristic length scales for different stages of dewetting as a function of film thickness showed a systematic increase, which is consistent with the spinodal dewetti…
We examine the kinetics of surface diffusion-controlled, solid-state dewetting by consideration of the retraction of the contact in a semi-infinite solid thin film on a flat rigid substrate. The analysis is performed within the framework of the Onsager variational principle applied to surface diffusion-controlled morphology evolution. Based on this approach, we derive a simple, reduced-order model to quantitatively analyse the power-law scaling of the dewetting process. Using asymptotic analysis and numerical simulations for the reduced-order model, we find that the retraction distance grows a…
We have observed nanopattern formation with robust and controllable spatial ordering by laser-induced dewetting in nanoscopic metal films. Pattern evolution in Co film of thickness 1\leq h\leq8 nm on SiO_{2} was achieved under multiple pulse irradiation using a 9 ns pulse laser. Dewetting leads to the formation of cellular patterns which evolve into polygons that eventually break up into nanoparticles with monomodal size distribution and short range ordering in nearest-neighbour spacing R. Spatial ordering was attributed to a hydrodynamic thin film instability and resulted in a predictable var…
We compare dewetting characteristics of a thin nonwetting solid film in the absence of stress, for two models of a wetting potential: the exponential and the algebraic. The exponential model is a one-parameter (r) model, and the algebraic model is a two-parameter (r,m) model, where r is the ratio of the characteristic wetting length to the height of the unperturbed film, and m is the exponent of h (film height) in a smooth function that interpolates the system's surface energy above and below the film-substrate interface at z=0. The exponential model gives monotonically decreasing (with h) wet…
We study the dewetting of liquid films capped by a thin elastomeric layer. When the tension in the elastomer is isotropic, circular holes grow at a rate which decreases with increasing tension. The morphology of holes and rim stability can be controlled by changing the boundary conditions and tension in the capping film. When the capping film is prepared with a biaxial tension, holes form with a non-circular shape elongated along the high tension axis. With suitable choice of elastic boundary conditions, samples can even be designed such that square holes appear.
Hydrodynamic pattern formation (PF) and dewetting resulting from pulsed laser induced melting of nanoscopic metal films have been used to create spatially ordered metal nanoparticle arrays with monomodal size distribution on SiO_{\text{2}}/Si substrates. PF was investigated for film thickness h\leq7 nm < laser absorption depth \sim11 nm and different sets of laser parameters, including energy density E and the irradiation time, as measured by the number of pulses n. PF was only observed to occur for E\geq E_{m}, where E_{m} denotes the h-dependent threshold energy required to melt the film. Ev…
We propose a sharp interface model for simulating solid-state dewetting where the surface energy is (weakly) anisotropic. The morphology evolution of thin films is governed by surface diffusion and contact line migration. The mathematical model is based on an energy variational approach. Anisotropic surface energies lead to multiple solutions of the contact angle equation at contact points. Introduction of a finite contact point mobility is both physically based and leads to robust, unambiguous determination of the contact angles. We implement the mathematical model in an explicit finite diffe…
Dewetting of a binary alloy thin film is studied using a continuum many-parameter model that accounts for the surface and bulk diffusion, the bulk phase separation, the surface segregation and the particles formation. Analytical solution is found for the quasistatic equilibrium concentration of a surface-segregated atomic species. This solution is factored into the nonlinear and coupled evolution PDEs for the bulk composition and surface morphology. Stability of a planar film surface with respect to small perturbations of the shape and composition is analyzed, revealing the dependence of the p…
Overlaid self-ordering processes: we form anodic self-organized TiO2 nanostumps and exploit them for self-ordering dewetting of Au-Ag sputtered films. This forms ordered particle configurations at tube top (crown position) or bottom (ground position). By dealloying we then form, from minimal amount of noble metal, porous Au nanoparticles that when in crown position allow for a drastically improved photocatalytic H2 production compared with nanoparticles produced by conventional dewetting processes.
The problem of simulating solid-state dewetting of thin films in three dimensions (3D) by using a sharp-interface approach is considered in this paper. Based on the thermodynamic variation, a speed method is used for calculating the first variation to the total surface energy functional. The speed method shares more advantages than the traditional use of parameterized curves (or surfaces), e.g., it is more intrinsic and its variational structure (related with Cahn-Hoffman $\boldsymbolξ$-vector) is clearer and more direct. By making use of the first variation, necessary conditions for the equil…

The Al-Au binary diffusion couple is a classic example of the system exhibiting Kirkendall voiding during interdiffusion. We demonstrate that this effect, which is a major reason for failures of the wire bonds in microelectronics, can be utilized for producing hollow AlAu2 nanoparticles attached to sapphire substrate. To this end, we produced the core-shell Al-Au nanoparticles by performing a solid state dewetting treatment of Al thin film deposited on sapphire substrate, followed by the deposition of thin Au layer on the top of dewetted sample. Annealing of the core-shell nanoparticles in air…
A mathematical model is developed to analyze the growth/decay rate of surface perturbations of an ultrathin metal film on an amorphous substrate (SiO_{2}). The formulation combines the approach of Mullins [J. Appl. Phys. v30, 77, 1959] for bulk substrates, in which curvature-driven mass transport and surface deformation can occur by surface/volume diffusion and evaporation-condensation processes, with that of Spencer et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. v67, 26, 1991] to describe solid state transport in thin films under epitaxial strain. The model is applied to study the relative rate of solid state mass…
We propose a parametric finite element method (PFEM) for efficiently solving the morphological evolution of solid-state dewetting of thin films on a flat rigid substrate in three dimensions (3D). The interface evolution of the dewetting problem in 3D is described by a sharp-interface model, which includes surface diffusion coupled with contact line migration. A variational formulation of the sharp-interface model is presented, and a PFEM is proposed for spatial discretization. For temporal discretization, at each time step, we first update the position of the contact line according to the rela…
Solid-state dewetting phenomenon in silver thin films offers a straightforward method to obtain structures having controlled shape or size -this latter in principle spanning several orders of magnitudes -- with potentially strong interest in many applications involving high-tech industry and biomedicine. In this work nanostructured silver is deposited by pulsed electron ablation technique and its surface modified upon thermal treatments in air at increasing temperatures. Surface chemistry and morphology are then monitored simultaneously by X-ray photoemission spectroscopy and atomic force micr…
When a liquid film lies on a non-wettable substrate, the configuration is unstable and the film then retracts from a solid substrate to form droplets. This phenomenon, known as dewetting, commonly leads to undesirable morphological changes. Nevertheless, recent works have demonstrated the possibility to harness dewetting by employing templated substrates with a degree of precision on par with advanced lithographic processes for high-performance nanophotonic applications. Since resonant behavior is highly sensitive to geometrical changes, predicting quantitatively dewetting dynamics is of high …
The results of our investigation of ion implantation of PLGA show that the PLGA films undergo crosslinking, carbonization and etching. The PLGA coating degrades in water by a hydrolysis reaction. The dewetting of PLGA coating under water is observed on silicon wafer, metal and carbon surfaces. As the result, the coating is ruptured up to separate drops of PLGA on the surface. The dewetting process can be eliminated by an ion beam implantation treatment, when the ions penetrate through the whole PLGA coating. The dewetting process in the modified layer can be eliminated even with low fluence (1…
Everyday experience confirms the tendency of adhesive films to detach from spheroidal regions of rigid substrates -- what is a petty frustration when placing a sticky bandage onto an elbow or knee is a more serious matter in the coating and painting industries. Irrespective of their resistance to bending, a key driver of such phenomena is Gauss' \textit{Theorema Egregium}, which implies that naturally flat sheets cannot conform to doubly-curved surfaces without developing a strain whose magnitude grows sharply with the curved area. Previous attempts to characterize the onset of curvature-induc…
Morphological instability of a planar surface ([111], [011], or [001]) of an ultra-thin metal film is studied in a parameter space formed by three major effects (the quantum size effect, the surface energy anisotropy and the surface stress) that influence a film dewetting. The analysis is based on the extended Mullins equation, where the effects are cast as functions of the film thickness. The formulation of the quantum size effect (Z. Zhang et al., PRL 80, 5381 (1998)) includes the oscillation of the surface energy with thickness caused by electrons confinement. By systematically comparing th…
We show that many two dimensional domain patterns observed in Monte Carlo simulations can be obtained from the many soliton solutions of the imaginary time Sine Gordon equation. This opens the door to analytic physical understanding of the micromagnetics in ultra-thin films.
There is a demand for the manufacture of ultra low-loss metallic films with high-quality single crystals and surface for quantum optics and quantum information processing. Many researches are devoted to alternative materials, but silver is by far the most preferred low-loss material at optical and near-IR frequencies. Usually, epitaxial growth is used to deposit single-crystalline silver films, but they still suffer from losses and well-known deweting effect. Here we report the two-step approach for e-beam evaporation of atomically smooth single-crystalline metallic films. The proposed method …
We study the free-surface deformation dynamics of an immersed glassy thin polymer film supported on a substrate, induced by an air nanobubble at the free surface. We combine analytical and numerical treatments of the glassy thin film equation, resulting from the lubrication approximation applied to the surface mobile layer of the glassy film, under the driving of an axisymmetric step function in the pressure term accounting for the nanobubble's Laplace pressure. Using the method of Green's functions, we derive a general solution for the film profile. We show that the lateral extent of the surfa…
Here we study the kinetics of liquefaction and solidification of thin bismuth films grown on the insulating substrate by the pulsed laser deposited (PLD) and molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) and investigated by in situ electron and X-ray diffraction. By PLD, we can grow films similar to those obtained using MBE, studied by ex-situ AFM, KPFM, XRR, and XRD. The liquefaction-solidification transition is monitored in real-time by RHEED and synchrotron XRD, resulting in a dewetting phenomenon and the formation of spherical droplets which size depends on the initial film thickness. Studying this phase t…
Here we report the adsorption behaviour of a water soluble laser dye rhodamine onto ultrathin films prepared by LB technique without altering its photophysical behabiour.
The phenomenon of potential sputtering of ultra-thin Pt films due to impact of 20 keV highly charged $Ar^{q+}$ (q = 3 - 8) ions has been investigated. The results show enhanced erosion of the Pt film with the increase of potential energy of the Ar projectile.
We analyze X-ray diffraction data used to extract cell parameters of ultrathin films on closely matching substrates. We focus on epitaxial La2/3Sr1/3MnO3 films grown on (001) SrTiO3 single crystalline substrates. It will be shown that, due to extremely high structural similarity of film and substrate, data analysis must explicitly consider the distinct phase of the diffracted waves by substrate and films to extract reliable unit cell parameters. The implications of this finding for the understanding of strain effects in ultrathin films and interfaces will be underlined
We observe pronounced oscillations in differential reflectivity of 9 nm and 60 nm BaFe\textsubscript{2}As\textsubscript{2} (Ba-122) thin films using ultrafast optical spectroscopy. Our studies show that the oscillations result from propagating longitudinal acoustic (LA) phonon wave packets with strong thickness and temperature dependence. Particularly, the experimentally measured oscillation frequency approaches to 50 GHz for the ultra-thin film. Our calculations show that Young's modulus of 9 nm thin film is nearly four times as large as that of 60 nm thin film, consistent with the experiment…
In this paper, a method is presented to create and characterize mechanically robust, free standing, ultrathin, oxide films with controlled, nanometer-scale thickness using Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD) on graphene. Aluminum oxide films were deposited onto suspended graphene membranes using ALD. Subsequent etching of the graphene left pure aluminum oxide films only a few atoms in thickness. A pressurized blister test was used to determine that these ultrathin films have a Young's modulus of 154 \pm 13 GPa. This Young's modulus is comparable to much thicker alumina ALD films. This behavior indic…
Experimental efforts to stabilize ferromagnetism in ultrathin films of transition metal oxides have so far failed, despite expectations based on density functional theory (DFT) and DFT+U. Here, we investigate one of the most promising materials, SrRuO$_3$, and include correlation effects beyond DFT by means of dynamical mean field theory. In agreement with experiment we find an intrinsic thickness limitation for metallic ferromagnetism in SrRuO$_3$ thin films. Indeed, we demonstrate that the realization of ultrathin ferromagnetic films is out of reach of standard thin-film techniques. Proposin…
A detailed formulation for the effects of the surface integrity, i.e. surface topography, surface metallurgy, and surface mechanical properties, on the mechanics of ultra-thin films is proposed in the framework of linear elasticity. In this formulation, the ultra-thin film is modeled as a material bulk covered with two altered layers and two rough surfaces as distinct phases. Two versions of the proposed formulation are developed. In the first version, the governing equations are obtained depending on the general form of the surface topography. In the second version, the governing equations ar…
To understand the near-interface magnetism in manganites, uniform, ultra-thin films of La_{0.67}Sr_{0.33}MnO_3 were grown epitaxially on single crystal (001) LaAlO_3 and (110) NdGaO_3 substrates. The temperature and magnetic field dependent film resistance is used to probe the film's structural and magnetic properties. A surface and/or interface related dead-layer is inferred from the thickness dependent resistance and magnetoresistance. The total thickness of the dead layer is estimated to be $\sim 30 Å$ for films on NdGaO_3 and $\sim 50 Å$ for films on LaAlO_3.
