We discuss fermions for arbitrary dimensions and signature of the metric, with special emphasis on euclidean space. Generalized Majorana spinors are defined for $d=2,3,4,8,9$ mod 8, independently of the signature. These objects permit a consistent analytic continuation of Majorana spinors in Min-kowski space to euclidean signature. Compatibility of charge conjugation with complex conjugation requires for euclidean signature a new complex structure which involves a reflection in euclidean time. The possible complex structures for Minkowski and euclidean signature can be understood in terms of a modulo two periodicity in the signature. The concepts of a real action and hermitean observables depend on the choice of the complex structure. For a real action the expectation values of all hermitean multi-fermion observables are real. This holds for arbitrary signature, including euclidean space. In particular, a chemical potential is compatible with a real action for the euclidean theory. We also discuss the discrete symmetries of parity, time reversal and charge conjugation for arbitrary dimension and signature.
We obtain a continuous Wick rotation for Dirac, Majorana and Weyl spinors $ψ\to \exp ({1\over 2} θγ^4 γ^5)ψ$ which interpolates between Minkowski and Euclidean field theories.
We generalize a regularization method of Stumpf 1984 in the case of non-linear spinor field models to fourth order theories and to non-scalar interactions. The involved discrete symmetries can be connected with C,P,T transformations.
VSR symmetries are here naturally incorporated in the DKP algebra on the spin-0 and the spin-1 DKP sectors. We show that the Elko (dark) spinor fields structure plays an essential role on accomplishing this aim, unravelling hidden symmetries on the bosonic DKP fields under the action of discrete symmetries.
We propose a continuous Wick rotation for Dirac, Majorana and Weyl spinors from Minkowski spacetime to Euclidean space which treats fermions on the same footing as bosons. The result is a recipe to construct a supersymmetric Euclidean theory from any supersymmetric Minkowski theory. This Wick rotation is identified as a complex Lorentz boost in a five-dimensional space and acts uniformly on bosons and fermions. For Majorana and Weyl spinors our approach is reminiscent of the traditional Osterwalder Schrader approach in which spinors are ``doubled'' but the action is not hermitean. However, for…
The covariant quantization of massless D=11 superparticle (M0-brane) in its twistor-like Lorentz harmonic formulation is used to clarify the origin and some properties of the Berkovits pure spinor approach to quantum superstring and to search for hidden symmetries of D=11 supergravity. In the twistor like Lorentz harmonic formulation, the SO(16) symmetry is seen already at the classical level. The quantization produces the linearized supergravity multiplet as 128+128=256 component Majorana spinor of SO(16) and also shows an indirect argument in favor of the possible E8 symmetry.
In this paper we discuss fundamental aspects related to the helicity and dynamics of the spin-$1/2$ fermions encompassed within the very well-known Lounesto's classification. More specifically, we investigate how the bi-spinorial structures behave under discrete symmetries, as well as analyse some consequences on the spinors dynamics. In addition, we find an interesting relation between the spinor helicity and the Lounesto spinor classification.
By exploring a spinor space whose elements carry a spin 1/2 representation of the Lorentz group and satisfy the the Fierz-Pauli-Kofink identities we show that certain symmetries operations form a Lie group. Moreover, we discuss the reflex of the Dirac dynamics in the spinor space. In particular, we show that the usual dynamics for massless spinors in the spacetime is related to an incompressible fluid behavior in the spinor space.
A spinor fields classification with non-Abelian gauge symmetries is introduced, generalizing the the U(1) gauge symmetries-based Lounesto's classification. Here, a more general classification, contrary to the Lounesto's one, encompasses spinor multiplets, corresponding to non-Abelian gauge fields. The particular case of SU(2) gauge symmetry, encompassing electroweak and electromagnetic conserved charges, is then implemented by a non-Abelian spinor classification, now involving 14 mixed classes of spinor doublets. A richer flagpole, dipole, and flag-dipole structure naturally descends from this…
We consider quantum electrodynamics with additional coupling of spinor fields to the space-time independent axial vector violating both Lorentz and CPT symmetries. The Fock-Schwinger proper time method is used to calculate the one-loop effective action up to the second order in the axial vector and to all orders in the space-time independent electromagnetic field strength. We find that the Chern-Simons term is not radiatively induced and that the effective action is CPT invariant in the given approximation.
Benefiting from the index spinorial formalism, the Killing spinor equation is integrated in six-dimensional spacetimes. The integrability conditions for the existence of a Killing spinor are worked out and the Killing spinors are classified in two algebraic types, in the first type the scalar curvature of the spacetime must be negative, while in the second type the spacetime must be an Einstein manifold. In addition, the equations that define Killing-Yano (KY) and closed conformal Killing-Yano (CCKY) tensors are expressed in the index notation and, as consequence, all non-vanishing KY and CCKY…
In the background of a stationary black hole, the "conserved current" of a particular spinor field always approaches the null Killing vector on the horizon. What's more, when the black hole is asymptotically flat and when the coordinate system is asymptotically static, then the same current also approaches the time Killing vector at the spatial infinity. We test these results against various black hole solutions and no exception is found. The spinor field only needs to satisfy a very general and simple constraint.
In this manuscript we report the flag-dipole spinors dual structure direct definition and analyze the properties behind the corresponding operator which generates such structure. This particular construction may be interesting for cosmological, phenomenological and mathematical physics applications. In addition, we analyse the behaviour of the flag-dipole spinors under action of discrete symmetries, facing an \emph{unconventional} property encoded on $(\mathcal{CPT})^2$.
We obtain the exact solutions to the field equations for massless scalar and massless spinor fields on quantized two-dimensional anti-de Sitter space. We then apply the AdS/CFT correspondence principle to get exact answers for the two point correlation functions of the associated operators on the boundary. The results support the conclusion that conformal symmetry on the boundary is not spoiled by quantization of the bulk. Moreover, quantization of the bulk has no effect on the spinor two-point correlation function, while it induces an overall re-scaling in the scalar two-point correlation fun…
Extending the investigations about the theory of duals, we analyze duals built up with the aid of discrete symmetry operators. We scrutinize algebraic and physical constraints (encompassing them in a theoretical scope) in order to verify which combination of discrete symmetries may compose a physical and mathematical well-posed spinorial dual. In this scenario, we relate the Lounesto classification with several other spinor classification possibilities, attempting to connect classes and physical constraints. Several possibilities are investigated.
We consider geometric and supergravity Killing spinors and the spinor bilinears constructed out of them. The spinor bilinears of geometric Killing spinors correspond to the antisymmetric generalizations of Killing vector fields which are called Killing-Yano forms. They constitute a Lie superalgebra structure in constant curvature spacetimes. We show that the Dirac currents of geometric Killing spinors satisfy a Lie algebra structure up to a condition on 2-form spinor bilinears. We propose that the spinor bilinears of supergravity Killing spinors give way to different generalizations of Killing…
We consider the covariant quantization of the D=11 massless superparticle (M0-brane) in the spinor moving frame or twistor-like Lorentz harmonics formulation. The action involves the set of 16 constrained 32 component Majorana spinors, the spinor Lorentz harmonics parametrizing (as homogeneous coordinates, modulo gauge symmetries) the celestial sphere S9. There presence allows us to separate covariantly the first and the second class constraints of the model. After taking into account the second class constraints by means of Dirac brackets and after further reducing the first class constraints…
We show how a singly quantized vortex can exhibit energetically stable defect cores with different symmetries in an atomic spin-1 polar Bose-Einstein condensate, and how a stable topologically nontrivial Skyrmion texture of lower dimensionality can be confined inside the core. The core isotropy and the stability of the confined texture are sensitive to Zeeman level shifts. The observed structures have analogies, respectively, in pressure-dependent symmetries of superfluid liquid He-3 vortices and in the models of superconducting cosmic strings.
We investigate the hidden symmetries and existence of Killing spinors of D=5 minimal gauged supergravity solutions which admit a Killing-Maxwell system in the sense of Carter, such as the Chong-Cveti$\check{c}$-Lü-Pope (CCLP) Kerr-dS black hole spacetime and a 5-dimensional minimal gauged supergravity solution endowed with a Sasaki structure deformed by torsion, a limiting case of the generalization of the 5-dimensional toric Sasaki-Einstein $L^{a,b,c}$ spacetime. We note that when an electromagnetic tensor is present and an associated Killing-Maxwell system can be constructed in the sense of …
I describe the interplay between Minkowski and Euclidean signature gamma matrices, Majorana fermions, and discrete and continuous symmetries in all spacetime dimensions.
Lattice spinor gravity is a proposal for regularized quantum gravity based on fermionic degrees of freedom. In our lattice model the local Lorentz symmetry is generalized to complex transformation parameters. The difference between space and time is not put in a priori, and the euclidean and Minkowski quantum field theory are unified in one functional integral. The metric and its signature arise as a result of the dynamics, corresponding to a given ground state or cosmological solution. Geometrical objects as the vierbein, spin connection or the metric are expectation values of collective fiel…
Noncommutative Chern-Simons gauge theory coupled to nonrelativistic scalars or spinors is shown to admit the ``exotic'' two-parameter-centrally extended Galilean symmetry, realized in a unique way consistent with the Seiberg-Witten map. Nontopological spinor vortices and topological external-field vortices are constructed by reducing the problem to previously solved self-dual equations.
We lift the set of classical non-local symmetries recently studied by Klose, Loebbert, and Münkler in the context of $\mathbb Z_2$ cosets to the pure spinor description of the superstring in the $AdS_5\times S^5$ background.
Recently we proposed a new Wick rotation for Dirac spinors which resulted in a hermitean action in Euclidean space. Our work was in a path integral context, however, in this note, we provide the canonical formulation of the new Wick rotation along the lines of the proposal of Osterwalder and Schrader.
Classification of the N=1 space-time supersymmetric fermionic Z2XZ2 heterotic-string vacua with symmetric internal shifts, revealed a novel spinor-vector duality symmetry over the entire space of vacua, where the S_t <-> V duality interchanges the spinor plus anti-spinor representations with vector representations. In this paper we demonstrate that the spinor--vector duality exists also in fermionic Z2 heterotic string models, which preserve N=2 space-time supersymmetry. In this case the interchange is between spinorial and vectorial representations of the unbroken SO(12) GUT symmetry. We prov…
We give a covariant construction of Lagrangians for spinor fields in generic Newton-Cartan backgrounds. A non-relativistic Dirac/Levy-Leblond operator and the associated fields are obtained from relativistic analogues by a limiting procedure. The relativistic symmetries induce the complete set of non-relativistic symmetries, including Milne boosts and local Galilean transformations. The resulting Levy-Leblond operator includes non-minimal couplings to the Newton-Cartan structure as well as to the gauge field, and with these couplings it transforms covariantly. Phenomenologically, this fixes th…
Triple systems are closely related to Yang-Baxter symmetries. Utilizing a non-parameter-dependent triple product, we derive the BCS interaction. The enlargement of the notion of symmetry leads in some sense to a regular vertex function. The connection to the effect of running coupling constants is outlined, which leads to the recently discussed anisotropic effective local interactions. Furthermore, a discussion of the physical nature of q-symmetries is given.
Spinor structure and internal symmetries are considered within one theoretical framework based on the generalized spin and abstract Hilbert space. Complex momentum is understood as a generating kernel of the underlying spinor structure. It is shown that tensor products of biquaternion algebras are associated with the each irreducible representation of the Lorentz group. Space-time discrete symmetries $P$, $T$ and their combination $PT$ are generated by the fundamental automorphisms of this algebraic background (Clifford algebras). Charge conjugation $C$ is presented by a pseudoautomorphism of …
Taking Euclidean signature space-time with its local Spin(4)=SU(2)xSU(2) group of space-time symmetries as fundamental, one can consistently gauge one SU(2) factor to get a chiral spin connection formulation of general relativity, the other to get part of the Standard Model gauge fields. Reconstructing a Lorentz signature theory requires introducing a degree of freedom specifying the imaginary time direction, which will play the role of the Higgs field. To make sense of this one needs to work with twistor geometry, which provides tautological spinor degrees of freedom and a framework for relat…
The axial anomaly is computed for Euclidean Dirac fermions on the plane. The dependence upon the self-adjoint extensions of the Dirac operator is investigated and its relevance concerning the second virial coefficient of the anyon gas is discussed.
We study metric solutions of Einstein-anti-Maxwell theory admitting Killing spinors. The analogue of the IWP metric which admits a space-like Killing vector is found and is expressed in terms of a complex function satisfying the wave equation in flat (2+1)-dimensional space-time. As examples, electric and magnetic Kasner spaces are constructed by allowing the solution to depend only on the time coordinate. Euclidean solutions are also presented.
Each isometric complex structure on a 2$\ell$-dimensional euclidean space $E$ corresponds to an identification of the Clifford algebra of $E$ with the canonical anticommutation relation algebra for $\ell$ ( fermionic) degrees of freedom. The simple spinors in the terminology of E.~Cartan or the pure spinors in the one of C. Chevalley are the associated vacua. The corresponding states are the Fock states (i.e. pure free states), therefore, none of the above terminologies is very good.
We consider a free massive spinor field in Euclidean Anti-de Sitter space. The usual Dirac action in bulk is supplemented by a certain boundary term. The boundary conditions of the field are parametrized by a spinor on the boundary, subject to a projection. We calculate the dependence of the partition function on this boundary spinor. The result agrees with the generating functional of the correlation functions of a quasi-primary spinor operator, of a certain scaling dimension, in a free conformal field theory on the boundary.
It has been recently shown that the eigenvalues of the Dirac operator can be considered as dynamical variables of Euclidean gravity. The purpose of this paper is to explore the possiblity that the eigenvalues of the Dirac operator might play the same role in the case of supergravity. It is shown that for this purpose some primary constraints on covariant phase space as well as secondary constraints on the eigenspinors must be imposed. The validity of primary constraints under covariant transport is further analyzed. It is show that in the this case restrictions on the tanget bundle and on the …
We explore the Euclidean supersymmetric solutions admitting the self-dual gauge field in the framework of ${\cal N}=2$ minimal gauged supergravity in four dimensions. According to the classification scheme utilizing the spinorial geometry or the bilinears of Killing spinors, the general solution preserves one quarter of supersymmetry and is described by the Przanowski-Tod class with the self-dual Weyl tensor. We demonstrate that there exists an additional Killing spinor, provided the Przanowski-Tod metric admits a Killing vector that commutes with the principal one. The proof proceeds by recas…
We compute conformal correlation functions with spinor, tensor, and spinor-tensor primary fields in general dimensions with Euclidean and Lorentzian metrics. The spinors are taken to be Dirac spinors, which exist for any dimensions. For this, the embedding space formalism is employed and the polarisation spinors are introduced to simplify the computations. Three-point functions are rewritten in terms of differential operators acting on scalar-scalar-tensor correlation functions. This enables us to determine conformal blocks for four-point functions with scalar and spinor fields by acting the d…
We generalize the symmetry superalgebras of isometries and geometric Killing spinors on a manifold to include all the hidden symmetries of the manifold generated by Killing spinors in all dimensions. We show that bilinears of geometric Killing spinors produce special Killing-Yano and special conformal Killing-Yano forms. After defining the Lie algebra structure of hidden symmetries generated by Killing spinors, we construct the symmetry operators as the generalizations of the Lie derivative on spinor fields. All these constructions together constitute the structure of generalized symmetry supe…
This article is based on a talk given at the Memorial Conference for Maximilian Kreuzer at the ESI in Vienna and contains a compact summary of a recent collaboration with P.A. Grassi. A non-linear projection from the space of SO(10) Weyl spinors to the space of pure spinors is presented together with some of its particular properties. This projection can be used to remove the constraints from Berkovits' pure spinor superstring while introducing additional gauge symmetries. This should allow to make transitions to equivalent formulations which might shed light on the origin of the pure spinor g…
We study the classical and quantum evolution of a universe in which the matter source is a massive Dirac spinor field and the universe is described by a Bianchi type I metric. We focus attention on those classical solutions that admit a degenerate metric in which the scale factors have smooth behavior in transition from a Euclidean to a Lorentzian domain and show that this transition happens when the cosmological constant, $Λ$, is negative. The resulting quantum cosmology and the corresponding Wheeler-DeWitt equation are also studied and closed form expressions for the wave functions of the un…
We discuss a simple derivation of the real-time AdS/CFT prescription as an analytic continuation of the corresponding problem in Euclidean signature. We then extend the formalism to spinor operators and apply it to the examples of real-time fermionic correlators in CFTs dual to pure AdS and the BTZ black hole.
Solutions to the four-dimensional Euclidean Weyl equation in the background of a general JNR N-instanton are known to be normalisable and regular throughout four-space. We show that these solutions are asymptotically given by a linear combination of simple singular solutions to the free Weyl equation, which can be interpreted as localised spinors. The `spinorial' data parameterising the asymptotics of the delocalised solutions to the Weyl equation in the presence of the instanton almost determines the background instanton, yet not completely. However, it captures the geometry and symmetry of t…
This paper studies the space of $L ^2 $ harmonic forms and $L ^2 $ harmonic spinors on Taub-bolt, a Ricci-flat Riemannian 4-manifold of ALF type. We prove that the space of harmonic square-integrable 2-forms on Taub-bolt is 2-dimensional and construct a basis. We explicitly find a 2-parameter family of $L ^2 $ zero modes of the Dirac operator twisted by an arbitrary $L ^2 $ harmonic connection. We also show that the number of zero modes found is equal to the index of the Dirac operator. We compare our results with those known in the case of Taub-NUT and Euclidean Schwarzschild as these manifol…
We explicitly calculate a Witten diagram with general spinor field exchange on $(d+1)$-dimensional Euclidean Anti-de Sitter space, which is necessary to evaluate four-point correlation functions with spinor fields when we make use of the AdS/CFT correspondence, especially in supersymmetric cases. We also show that the amplitude can be reduced to a scalar exchange amplitude. We discuss the operator product expansion of the dual conformal field theory by interpreting the short distance expansion of the amplitude according to the AdS/CFT correspondence.
There are gauge-transformation operators applicable to massless spin-1/2 particles within the little-group framework of internal space-time symmetries of massive and massless particles. It is shown that two of the $SL(2,c)$ spinors are invariant under gauge transformations while the remaining two are not. The Dirac equation contains only the gauge-invariant spinors leading to polarized neutrinos. It is shown that the gauge-dependent $SL(2,c)$ spinor is the origin of the gauge dependence of electromagnetic four-potentials. It is noted also that, for spin-1/2 particles, the symmetry group for ma…
The technique for representing spinors and the definition of the discrete symmetries is used to illustrate on a toy model properties of massless and massive spinors states, in the first and the second quantized picture. Since in this toy model the number of the starting massless representations is well defined as well as the origin of masses and charges in $d=(3+1)$ space, this contribution might help to clarify the problem about Dirac, Weyl and Majorana kinds of representations in physically more interesting cases.
We describe spinors in Minkowskian spaces with arbitrary signature and their role in the classification of space-time superalgebras and their R-symmetries in any dimension.
We employ new calculational technique and present complete list of classical $r$-matrices for $D=4$ complex homogeneous orthogonal Lie algebra $\mathfrak{o}(4;\mathbb{C})$, the rotational symmetry of four-dimensional complex space-time. Further applying reality conditions we obtain the classical $r$-matrices for all possible real forms of $\mathfrak{o}(4;\mathbb{C})$: Euclidean $\mathfrak{o}(4)$, Lorentz $\mathfrak{o}(3,1)$, Kleinian $\mathfrak{o}(2,2)$ and quaternionic $\mathfrak{o}^{\star}(4)$ Lie algebras. For $\mathfrak{o}(3,1)$ we get known four classical $D=4$ Lorentz $r$-matrices, but f…
Hughston has shown that projective pure spinors can be used to construct massless solutions in higher dimensions, generalizing the four-dimensional twistor transform of Penrose. In any even (Euclidean) dimension d=2n, projective pure spinors parameterize the coset space SO(2n)/U(n), which is the space of all complex structures on R^{2n}. For d=4 and d=6, these spaces are CP^1 and CP^3, and the appropriate twistor transforms can easily be constructed. In this paper, we show how to construct the twistor transform for d>6 when the pure spinor satisfies nonlinear constraints, and present explicit …
We describe a novel twistorial construction of the asymptotic BMS symmetries at null infinity for asymptotically flat spacetimes. We define BMS twistors as spinor solutions to some set of components of the usual spacetime twistor equation restricted to null infinity. The space of BMS twistors is infinite-dimensional. We show that given two BMS twistors their symmetric tensor product can be used to generate (complex) vector fields which are the infinitesimal BMS symmetries of null infinity. In this sense BMS twistors are "square roots" of BMS symmetries. We also show that these BMS twistor equa…
The article is dedicated to q-deformed versions of spinor calculus. As a kind of review, the most relevant properties of the two-dimensional quantum plane are summarized. Additionally, the relationship between the quantum plane and higher-dimensional quantum spaces like the q-deformed Euclidean space in four dimensions or the q-deformed Minkowski space is outlined. These considerations are continued by introducing q-analogs of the Pauli matrices. Their main properties are discussed in detail and numerous relations that could prove useful in physical applications are presented. In this respect,…
In this paper, we survey the nature of spinors and supersymmetry (SUSY) in various types of spaces. We treat two distinct types of spaces: flat spaces and spaces of constant (non-zero) curvature. The flat spaces we consider are either three or four dimensional of signatures 3 + 1, 4 + 0, 2 + 2 and 3 + 0. In each of these cases, SUSY generators anti-commute to yield the generators of translations in the non-compact flat spaces. The spaces of constant curvature we consider are two-dimensional: the surface of the sphere S_2 and the Anti-deSitter space AdS_2. S_2 is embedded in a 3 + 0 Euclidean s…
In many mathematical and physical contexts spinors are treated as Grassmann odd valued fields. We show that it is possible to extend the classification of reality conditions on such spinors by a new type of Majorana condition. In order to define this graded Majorana condition we make use of pseudo-conjugation, a rather unfamiliar extension of complex conjugation to supernumbers. Like the symplectic Majorana condition, the graded Majorana condition may be imposed, for example, in spacetimes in which the standard Majorana condition is inconsistent. However, in contrast to the symplectic conditio…
A system in which the free part of the action possesses a gauge symmetry that is not respected by the interacting part presents problems when quantized. We illustrate how the Dirac constraint formalism can be used to address this difficulty by considering an antisymmetric tensor field interacting with a spinor field.
We generalize our previous lattice construction of the abelian bosonization duality in $2+1$ dimensions to the entire web of dualities as well as the $N_f=2$ self-duality, via the lattice implementation of a set of modular transformations in the theory space. The microscopic construction provides explicit operator mappings, and allows the manifestation of some hidden symmetries. It also exposes certain caveats and implicit assumptions beneath the usual application of the modular transformations to generate the web of dualities. Finally, we make brief comments on the non-relativistic limit of t…
