I describe the interplay between Minkowski and Euclidean signature gamma matrices, Majorana fermions, and discrete and continuous symmetries in all spacetime dimensions.
We solve Klein-Gordon equation for massless scalars on d+1 dimensional Minkowski (Euclidean) space in terms of the Cauchy data on the hypersurface t=0. By inserting the solution into the action of massless scalars in Minkowski (Euclidean) space we obtain the action of dual theory on the boundary t=0 which is exactly the holographic dual of conformally coupled scalars on d+1 dimensional (Euclidean anti) de Sitter space obtained in (A)dS/CFT correspondence. The observed equivalence of dual theories is explained using the one-to-one map between conformally coupled scalar fields on Minkowski (Eucl…
The AdS/CFT correspondence relates Wilson loops in N=4 SYM theory to minimal area surfaces in AdS5xS5 space. If the Wilson loop is Euclidean and confined to a plane (t,x) then the dual surface is Euclidean and lives in Minkowski AdS3. In this paper we study such minimal area surfaces generalizing previous results obtained in the Euclidean case. Since the surfaces we consider have the topology of a disk, the holonomy of the flat current vanishes which is equivalent to the condition that a certain boundary Schroedinger equation has all its solutions anti-periodic. If the potential for that Schro…
We present an elementary method to obtain Green's functions in non-perturbative quantum field theory in Minkowski space from calculated Green's functions in Euclidean space. Since in non-perturbative field theory the analytical structure of amplitudes is many times unknown, especially in the presence of confined fields, dispersive representations suffer from systematic uncertainties. Therefore we suggest to use the Cauchy-Riemann equations, that perform the analytical continuation without assuming global information on the function in the entire complex plane, only in the region through which …
We give evidence that spacelike BPS Wilson loops do not exist in Minkowski spacetime. We show that spacelike Wilson loops in Minkowski spacetime cannot preserve any supersymmetries, in $d = 4$ $\mathcal N = 4$ super Yang-Mills theory, $d = 3$ $\mathcal N = 2$ super Chern-Simons-matter theory, and $d = 3$ $\mathcal N = 6$ Aharony-Bergman-Jafferis-Maldacena theory. We not only show this using infinite straight lines and circles as examples, but also we give proofs for general curves. We attribute this to the conflicts of reality conditions of the spinors. However, spacelike Wilson loops do exist…
We study the spectral dimension associated with diffusion processes on Euclidean $κ$-Minkowski space. We start by describing a geometric construction of the "Euclidean" momentum group manifold related to $κ$-Minkowski space. On such space we identify various candidate Laplacian functions, i.e. deformed Casimir invariants, and calculate the corresponding spectral dimension for each case. The results obtained show a variety of running behaviours for the spectral dimension according to the choice of deformed Laplacian, from dimensional reduction to super-diffusion.
We shortly review different methods to obtain the scattering solutions of the Bethe-Salpeter equation in Minkowski space. We emphasize the possibility to obtain the zero energy observables in terms of the Euclidean scattering amplitude.
We consider the correspondence between solutions of non-gravitational field theories formulated in Euclidean space-time and Minkowski space-time. Infinitely many "Euclidean" spaces can be obtained from M4 via a group of transformations in which the Wick rotation is a special case. We then discuss how the solutions of gauge field theories formulated in these "Euclidean" spaces have a one-to-one correspondence with the solutions of field theories formulated in Minkowski space-time, provided we avoid the one-point compactification into S4 = E4 U infinity.
We propose a way of bosonizing free world-sheet fermions for $4$-dimensional heterotic string theory formulated in Minkowski space-time. We discuss the differences as compared to the standard bosonization performed in Euclidean space-time.
We study infrared divergences due to ultraviolet-infrared mixing in quantum field theory on Moyal space with Lorentzian signature in the Yang-Feldman formalism. Concretely, we are considering the phi^4 and the phi^3 model in arbitrary even dimension. It turns out that the situation is worse than in the Euclidean setting, in the sense that we find infrared divergences in graphs that are finite there. We briefly discuss the problems one faces when trying to adapt the nonlocal counterterms that render the Euclidean model renormalizable.
Some results obtained by a new method for solving the Bethe-Salpeter equation are presented. The method is valid for any kernel given by irreducible Feynman graphs. The Bethe-Salpeter amplitude, both in Minkowski and in Euclidean spaces, and the binding energy for ladder + cross-ladder kernel are found. We calculate also the corresponding electromagnetic form factor.
Starting with assumptions both simple and natural from "physical" point of view we present a direct construction of transformations preserving wide class of (anti)commutation relations which describe Euclidean/Minkowski superspace quantizations. These generalized transformations act on deformed superspaces as the ordinary ones do on undeformed spaces but they depend on non(anti)commuting parameters satisfying some consistent (anti)commutation relations. Once the coalgebraic structure compatible with the algebraic one is introduced in the set of transformations we deal with quantum symmetry sup…
Recently D. Buchholz and R. Verch have proposed a method for implementing in algebraic quantum field theory ideas from renormalization group analysis of short-distance (high energy) behavior by passing to certain scaling limit theories. Buchholz and Verch distinguish between different types of theories where the limit is unique, degenerate, or classical, and the method allows in principle to extract the `ultraparticle' content of a given model, i.e. to identify particles (like quarks and gluons) that are not visible at finite distances due to `confinement'. It is therefore of great importance …
We propose a continuous Wick rotation for Dirac, Majorana and Weyl spinors from Minkowski spacetime to Euclidean space which treats fermions on the same footing as bosons. The result is a recipe to construct a supersymmetric Euclidean theory from any supersymmetric Minkowski theory. This Wick rotation is identified as a complex Lorentz boost in a five-dimensional space and acts uniformly on bosons and fermions. For Majorana and Weyl spinors our approach is reminiscent of the traditional Osterwalder Schrader approach in which spinors are ``doubled'' but the action is not hermitean. However, for…
We obtain a continuous Wick rotation for Dirac, Majorana and Weyl spinors $ψ\to \exp ({1\over 2} θγ^4 γ^5)ψ$ which interpolates between Minkowski and Euclidean field theories.
The simplest supersymmetry (SUSY) algebra in four dimensional Euclidean space ($4dE$) has been shown to closely resemble the $N = 2$ SUSY algebra in four dimensional Minkowski space ($4dM$). The structure of the former algebra is examined in greater detail in this paper. We first present its Clifford algebra structure. This algebra shows that the momentum Casimir invariant of physical states has an upper bound which is fixed by the central charges. Secondly, we use reduction of the $N = 1$ SUSY algebra in six dimensional Minkowski space ($6dM$) to $4dE$; this reproduces our SUSY algebra in $4d…
We compute the density of open strings stretching between AdS2 branes in the Euclidean AdS3. This is done by solving the factorization constraint of a degenerate boundary field, and the result is checked by a Cardy-type computation. We mention applications to branes in the Minkowskian AdS3 and its cigar coset.
The generating function of correlators of dual operators on the boundary of (A)dS4 space corresponding to the conformally coupled $ϕ^4$-model is obtained up to first order in the coupling constant by using the conformal map between massless scalar fields in (Euclidean) Minkowski space and conformally coupled scalars on (Euclidean anti) de Sitter space. Some exact classical solutions of the nonlinear wave equation of massless (conformally coupled) $ϕ^3$, $ϕ^4$ and $ϕ^6$-models in D=6,4,3 Euclidean/Minkowski (AdS/dS) spaces are obtained.
We describe an analytic continuation of the Euclidean Grosse-Wulkenhaar and LSZ models which defines a one-parameter family of duality covariant noncommutative field theories interpolating between Euclidean and Minkowski space versions of these models, and provides an alternative regularization to the usual Feynman prescription. This regularization allows for a matrix model representation of the field theories in terms of a complex generalization of the usual basis of Landau wavefunctions. The corresponding propagators are calculated and identified with the Feynman propagators of the field the…
A variant of the Nielsen--Ninomiya no-go theorem is formulated. This theorem states that, under several assumptions, it is impossible to write down a doubler-free Euclidean lattice action of a single Majorana fermion in $8k$ and $8k+1$ dimensions.
We discuss fermions for arbitrary dimensions and signature of the metric, with special emphasis on euclidean space. Generalized Majorana spinors are defined for $d=2,3,4,8,9$ mod 8, independently of the signature. These objects permit a consistent analytic continuation of Majorana spinors in Min-kowski space to euclidean signature. Compatibility of charge conjugation with complex conjugation requires for euclidean signature a new complex structure which involves a reflection in euclidean time. The possible complex structures for Minkowski and euclidean signature can be understood in terms of a…
CFTs in Euclidean signature satisfy well-accepted rules, such as the convergent Euclidean OPE. It is nowadays common to assume that CFT correlators exist and have various properties also in Lorentzian signature. Some of these properties may represent extra assumptions, and it is an open question if they hold for familiar statistical-physics CFTs such as the critical 3d Ising model. Here we consider Wightman 4-point functions of scalar primaries in Lorentzian signature. We derive a minimal set of their properties solely from the Euclidean unitary CFT axioms, without using extra assumptions. We …
After a review of the existing theory of non-inertial frames and mathematical observers in Minkowski space-time we give the explicit expression of a family of such frames obtained from the inertial ones by means of point-dependent Lorentz transformations as suggested by the locality principle. These non-inertial frames have non-Euclidean 3-spaces and contain the differentially rotating ones in Euclidean 3-spaces as a subcase. Then we discuss how to replace mathematical accelerated observers with dynamical ones (their world-lines belong to interacting particles in an isolated system) and of how…
The pinched/non-pinched classification of intersections of causal singularities of propagators in Minkowski space is reconsidered in the context of the theory of asymptotic operation as a first step towards extension of the latter to non-Euclidean asymptotic regimes. A highly visual distribution-theoretic technique of singular wave fronts is tailored to the needs of the theory of Feynman diagrams. Besides a simple derivation of the usual Landau equations in the case of the conventional singularities, the technique naturally extends to other types of singularities e.g. due to linear denominator…
We establish duality between real forms of the quantum deformation of the 4-dimensional orthogonal group studied by Fioresi et al. and the classification work made by Borowiec et al.. Classically these real forms are the isometry groups of $\mathbb{R}^4$ equipped with Euclidean, Kleinian or Lorentzian metric. A general deformation, named $q$-linked, of each of these spaces is then constructed, together with the coaction of the corresponding isometry group.
