Conditions on a topological space $X$ under which the space $C(X,\mathbb{R})$ of continuous real-valued maps with the Isbell topology $κ$ is a topological group (topological vector space) are investigated. It is proved that the addition is jointly continuous at the zero function in $C_κ(X,\mathbb{R})$ if and only if $X$ is infraconsonant. This property is (formally) weaker than consonance, which implies that the Isbell and the compact-open topologies coincide. It is shown the translations are continuous in $C_κ(X,\mathbb{R})$ if and only if the Isbell topology coincides with the fine Isbell topology. It is proved that these topologies coincide if $X$ is prime (that is, with at most one non-isolated point), but do not even for some sums of two consonant prime spaces.
We look at the Bohr topology of maximally almost periodic groups (MAP, for short). Among other results, we investigate when a totally bounded abelian group $(G,w)$ is the Bohr reflection of a locally compact abelian group. Necessary and sufficient conditions are established in terms of the inner properties of $w$. As an application, an example of a MAP group $(G,t)$ is given such that every closed, metrizable subgroup $N$ of $bG$ with $N \cap G = \{0\}$ preserves compactness but $(G,t)$ does not strongly respects compactness. Thereby, we respond to Questions 4.1 and 4.3 in [comftrigwu].
A Hausdorff topological group topology on a group $G$ is the minimum (Hausdorff) group topology if it is contained in every Hausdorff group topology on $G$. For every compact metrizable space $X$ containing an open $n$-cell, $n\ge2$, the homeomorphism group $H(X)$ has no minimum Hausdorff group topology. The homeomorphism groups of the Cantor set and the Hilbert cube have no minimum group topology. For every compact metrizable space $X$ containing a dense open one-manifold, $H(X)$ has the minimum group topology. Some, but not all, oligomorphic groups have the minimum group topology.
A group topology is said to be linear if open subgroups form a base of neighborhoods of the identity element. It is proved that the existence of a nondiscrete extremally disconnected group of Ulam nonmeasurable cardinality with linear topology implies that of a nondiscrete extremally disconnected group of cardinality at most $2^ω$ with linear topology.
We give the first example of a locally quasi-convex (even countable reflexive and $k_ω$) abelian group $G$ which does not admit the strongest compatible locally quasi-convex group topology. Our group $G$ is the Graev free abelian group $A_G(\mathbf{s})$ over a convergent sequence $\mathbf{s}$.
We equip the product of countably many copies of a compact Abelian group X with the uniform topology, and study some properties of the topological group G thus obtained. In particular, we determine the cardinality of the dual group of G, when X is the circle group: it is precisely 2^c.
We prove that every reflexive abelian group $G$ such that its dual group $G^\wedge$ has the $qc$-Glicksberg property is a Mackey group. We show that a reflexive abelian group of finite exponent is a Mackey group. We prove that, for a realcompact space $X$, the space $C_k(X)$ is barrelled if and only if it is a Mackey group.
Groups with a topology that is in consistent one way or another with the algebraic structure are considered. Classical groups with a topology are topological, paratopological, semitopological, and quasitopological groups. We also study other ways of matching topology and algebraic structure. The minimum requirement in this paper is that the group is a right semitopological group (such groups are often called right topological groups). We study when a group with a topology is a topological group; research in this direction began with the work of Deane Montgomery and Robert Ellis. (Invariant) se…
We comment van Douwen's problems on the Bohr topology of the abelian groups raised in his paper (The maximal totally bounded group topology on G and the biggest minimal G-space for Abelian groups G) as well as the steps in the solution of some of them. New solutions to two of the resolved problems are also given.
For any countable torsion subgroup $H$ of an unbounded Abelian group $G$ there is a complete Hausdorff group topology $τ$ such that $H$ is the von Neumann radical of $(G,τ)$. In particular, any unbounded torsion countable Abelian group admits a complete Hausdorff minimally almost periodic (MinAP) group topology. If $G$ is a bounded torsion countably infinite Abelian group, then it admits a MinAP group topology if and only if all its leading Ulm-Kaplansky invariants are infinite. In such a case, a MinAP group topology can be chosen to be complete.
For any countable subgroup $H$ of an unbounded Abelian group $G$ there is a complete Hausdorff group topology $τ$ such that $H$ is the von Neumann radical of $(G,τ)$. In particular, we obtain the positive answer to Comfort's question: any unbounded countable Abelian group admits a complete Hausdorff minimally almost periodic (MinAP) group topology. A bounded infinite Abelian group admits a MinAP group topology if and only if all its leading Ulm-Kaplansky invariants are infinite. If, in addition, $G$ is countably infinite, a MinAP group topology can be chosen to be complete.
Recall that a space X is selectively pseudocompact if for every sequence (U_n) of non-empty open subsets of X one can choose a point x_n in U_n for all n such that the resulting sequence (x_n) has an accumulation point in X. This notion was introduced under the name strong pseudocompactness by García-Ferreira and Ortiz-Castillo, the present name is due to Dorantes-Aldama and the first author. In 2015, García-Ferreira and Tomita constructed a pseudocompact Boolean group that is not selectively pseudocompact. We prove that if the subgroup topology on every countable subgroup H of an infinite Boo…
A topological group G is said to be almost maximally almost-periodic if its von Neumann radical is non-trivial, but finite. In this paper, we prove that every abelian group with an infinite torsion subgroup admits a (Hausdorff) almost maximally almost-periodic group topology. Some open problems are also formulated.
A Hausdorff topological group is called minimal if it does not admit a strictly coarser Hausdorff group topology. This paper mostly deals with the topological group $H_+(X)$ of order-preserving homeomorphisms of a compact linearly ordered connected space $X$. We provide a sufficient condition on $X$ under which the topological group $H_+(X)$ is minimal. This condition is satisfied, for example, by: the unit interval, the ordered square, the extended long line and the circle (endowed with its cyclic order). In fact, these groups are even $a$-minimal, meaning, in this setting, that the compact-o…
We show that the homeomorphism group of a surface without boundary does not admit a Hausdorff group topology strictly coarser than the compact-open topology. In combination with known automatic continuity results, this implies that the compact-open topology is the unique Hausdorff separable group topology on the group if the surface is closed or the complement in a closed surface of either a finite set or the union of a finite set and a Cantor set.
The result often known as Joiner's lemma is fundamental in understanding the topology of the free topological group $F(X)$ on a Tychonoff space$X$. In this paper, an analogue of Joiner's lemma for the free paratopological group $\FP(X)$ on a $T_1$ space $X$ is proved. Using this, it is shown that the following conditions are equivalent for a space $X$: (1) $X$ is $T_1$; (2) $\FP(X)$ is $T_1$; (3) the subspace $X$ of $\FP(X)$ is closed; (4) the subspace $X^{-1}$ of $\FP(X)$ is discrete; (5) the subspace $X^{-1}$ is $T_1$; (6) the subspace $X^{-1}$ is closed; and (7) the subspace $\FP_n(X)$ is c…
Assuming the existence of $\mathfrak c$ incomparable selective ultrafilters, we classify the non-torsion Abelian groups of cardinality $\mathfrak c$ that admit a countably compact group topology. We show that for each $κ\in [\mathfrak c, 2^\mathfrak c]$ each of these groups has a countably compact group topology of weight $κ$ without non-trivial convergent sequences and another that has convergent sequences. Assuming the existence of $2^\mathfrak c$ selective ultrafilters, there are at least $2^\mathfrak c$ non homeomorphic such topologies in each case and we also show that every Abelian group…
The paper deals with group dualities. A group duality is simply a pair $(G, H)$ where $G$ is an abstract abelian group and $H$ a subgroup of characters defined on $G$. A group topology $τ$ defined on $G$ is {\it compatible} with the group duality (also called dual pair) $(G, H)$ if $G$ equipped with $τ$ has dual group $H$. A topological group $(G, τ)$ gives rise to the natural duality $(G, G^\wedge)$, where $G^\wedge$ stands for the group of continuous characters on $G$. We prove that the existence of a $g$-barrelled topology on $G$ compatible with the dual pair $(G, G^\wedge)$ is equivalent t…
We study locally compact group topologies on semisimple Lie groups. We show that the Lie group topology on such a group $S$ is very rigid: every 'abstract' isomorphism between $S$ and a locally compact and $σ$-compact group $Γ$ is automatically a homeomorphism, provided that $S$ is absolutely simple. If $S$ is complex, then non-continuous field automorphisms of the complex numbers have to be considered, but that is all.
We discuss the class of paratopological groups which admits a transversal, $T_{1}$-independent and $T_{1}$-complementary paratopological group topology. We show that the Sorgenfrey line does not admit a $T_{1}$-complementary Hausdorff paratopological group topology, which gives a negative answer to \cite[Problem 10]{AT2017}. We give a very useful criterion for transversality in term of submaximal paratopological group topology, and prove that if a non-discrete paratopological group topology $G$ contains a central subgroup which admits a transversal paratopological group topology, then so does …
The natural quotient map q from the space of based loops in the Hawaiian earring onto the fundamental group provides a new example of a quotient map such that q x q fails to be a quotient map. This also settles in the negative the question of whether the fundamental group (with the quotient topology) of a compact metric space is always a topological group with the standard operations.
This paper is devoted to the study of a natural group topology on the fundamental group which remembers local properties of spaces forgotten by covering space theory and weak homotopy type. It is known that viewing the fundamental group as the quotient of the loop space often fails to result in a topological group; we use free topological groups to construct a topology which promotes the fundamental group of any space to topological group structure. The resulting invariant, denoted $π_{1}^τ$, takes values in the category of topological groups, can distinguish spaces with isomorphic fundamental…
The $n$-th Zariski topology on a group $G$ is generated by the sub-base consiting of the cozero sets of monomials of degree $\le n$ on $G$. We prove that for each group $G$ the 2-nd Zariski topology is not discrete and present an example of a group $G$ of cardinality continuum whose 2-nd Zariski topology has countable pseudocharacter. On the other hand, the non-topologizable group $G$ constructed by Ol'shanskii has discrete 665-th Zariski topology.
According to Markov, a subset of an abelian group G of the form {x in G: nx=a}, for some integer n and some element a of G, is an elementary algebraic set; finite unions of elementary algebraic sets are called algebraic sets. We prove that a subset of an abelian group G is algebraic if and only if it is closed in every precompact (=totally bounded) Hausdorff group topology on G. The family of all algebraic subsets of an abelian group G forms the family of closed subsets of a unique Noetherian T_1 topology on G called the Zariski, or verbal, topology of G. We investigate the properties of this …
Recently Außenhofer and the author independently have shown that the free abelian topological group $A(\mathbf{s})$ over a convergent sequence $\mathbf{s}$ does not admit the strongest compatible locally quasi-convex group topology that gives the first example of a locally quasi-convex abelian group without a Mackey group topology. In this note we considerably extend this example by showing that the free abelian topological group $A(X)$ over a non-discrete zero-dimensional metrizable space $X$ does not have a Mackey group topology. In particular, for every countable non-discrete metrizable spa…
We prove that for any non-compact connected surface $M$ the group $H_c(M)$ of compactly suported homeomorphisms of $M$ endowed with the Whitney topology is homeomorphic to $R^\infty\times l_2$ or $Z\times R^\infty\times l_2$.
In this paper, we find at the properties of the family lambda which imply that the function space C(X,R^alpha) with the lambda-open topology is a semitopological group (paratopological group, topological group, topological vector space and other algebraic structures) under the usual operations of addition and multiplication (and multiplication by scalars).
We further investigate the weak topology generated by the irreducible unitary representations of a group $G$. A deep result due to Ernest \cite{Ernest1971} and Hughes \cite{Hughes1973} asserts that every weakly compact subset of a locally compact (LC) group $G$ is compact in the LC-topology, generalizing thereby a previous result of Glicksberg \cite{glicks1962} for abelian locally compact (LCA) groups. Here, we first survey some recent findings on the weak topology and establish some new results about the preservation of several compact-like properties when going from the weak topology to the …
We prove that an abelian group admits a minimally almost periodic (MinAP) group topology if and only if it is connected in its Markov-Zariski topology. In particular, every unbounded abelian group admits a MinAP group topology. This answers positively a question set by Comfort, as well as several weaker forms proposed recently by Gabriyelyan. Using this characterization we answer also two open questions of Gould. We prove that a subgroup H of an abelian group G can be realized as the von Neumann kernel of G equipped with some Hausdorff group topology if and only if H is contained in the connec…
In this paper we focus on the set-open topologies on the group $\mathcal{H}(X)$ of all self-homeomorphisms of a topological space $X$ which yield continuity of both the group operations, product and inverse function. As a consequence, we make the more general case of Dijkstra's theorem. In this case a homogeneously encircling family $\mathcal{B}$ consists of regular open sets and the closure of every set from $\mathcal{B}$ is contained in the finite union of connected sets from $\mathcal{B}$. Also we proved that the zero-cozero topology of $\mathcal{H}(X)$ is the relativisation to $\mathcal{H}…
The Isbell, compact-open and point-open topologies on the set $C(X,\mathbb{R})$ of continuous real-valued maps can be represented as the dual topologies with respect to some collections $α(X)$ of compact families of open subsets of a topological space $X$. Those $α(X)$ for which addition is jointly continuous at the zero function in $C_α(X,\mathbb{R})$ are characterized, and sufficient conditions for translations to be continuous are found. As a result, collections $α(X)$ for which $C_α(X,\mathbb{R})$ is a topological vector space are defined canonically. The Isbell topology coincides with thi…
We give a characterization of those abelian groups which are direct sums of cyclic groups and the Jacobson radical of their endomorphism rings are closed. A complete characterization of $p$-groups $A$ for which $(EndA,\mathcal T_L)$ is locally compact, where $\mathcal T_L$ is the Liebert topology on $EndA$, is given. We prove that if $A$ is a countable elementary $p$-group then $EndA$ has a non-admissible ring topology. To every functorial topology on $A$ a right bounded ring topology on $EndA$ is attached. By using this topology we construct on $EndA$ a non-metrizable and non-admissibe ring t…
It is known that the topology of a Polish group is uniquely determined by its Borel structure and group operations, but this does not give us a way to find the topology. In this article we expand on this theorem and give a criterion for a measurable function on the group to be continuous. We show that it is continuous iff there exists some second countable topology in which all the shifts of the function are continuous. Here measurability can be taken to be measurable with respect to Haar measure (in locally compact groups), or having the Baire property or universally measurable (in Abelian Po…
A Hausdorff topological group G is minimal if every continuous isomorphism f: G --> H between G and a Hausdorff topological group H is open. Significantly strengthening a 1981 result of Stoyanov, we prove the following theorem: For every infinite minimal abelian group G there exists a sequence {σ_n : n\in N} of cardinals such that w(G) = sup {σ_n : n \in N} and sup {2^{σ_n} : n \in N} \leq |G| \leq 2^{w(G)}, where w(G) is the weight of G. If G is an infinite minimal abelian group, then either |G| = 2^σfor some cardinal σ, or w(G) = min {σ: |G| \leq 2^σ}; moreover, the equality |G| = 2^{w(G)} h…
In the general context of functorial topologies, we prove that in the lattice of all group topologies on an abelian group, the infimum between the Bohr topology and the natural topology is the profinite topology. The profinite topology and its connection to other functorial topologies is the main objective of the paper. We are particularly interested in the poset C(G) of all finite-index subgroups of an abelian group G, since it is a local base for the profinite topology of G. We describe various features of the poset C(G) (its cardinality, its cofinality, etc.) and we characterize the abelian…
We show that every Abelian group satisfying a mild cardinal inequality admits a pseudocompact group topology from which all countable subgroups inherit the maximal totally bounded topology (we say that such a topology satisfies property $\h$). Every pseudocompact Abelian group $G$ with cardinality $|G|\leq 2^{2^\cc}$ satisfies this inequality and therefore admits a pseudocompact group topology with property $\h$. Under the Singular Cardinal Hypothesis (SCH) this criterion can be combined with an analysis of the algebraic structure of pseudocompact groups to prove that every pseudocompact Abeli…
Consider a Cremona group endowed with the Euclidean topology introduced by Blanc and Furter. It makes it a Hausdorff topological group that is not locally compact nor metrisable. We show that any sequence of elements of the Cremona group of bounded order that converges to the identity is constant. We use this result to show that the Cremona groups do not contain any non-trivial sequence of subgroups converging to the identity. We also show that, in general, paths in a Cremona group do not lift and do not satisfy a property similar to the definition of morphisms to a Cremona group.
\noindent The most natural group topology on $\Z$ is the discrete one. There are other well-known group topologies on $\Z$, like the $p$-adic, defined for any prime number $p$. It is also an important group topology the weak topology with respect to the group of homomorphisms from $\Z$ to the unit circle of the complex plane; that is, the one defined by the characters and which is known as "the Bohr topology" on $\Z$. \noindent In \cite{tesislorenzo}, it is proved that taking as a neighbourhood basis at 0 the subsets $\{W_n\mid n\in\N\}$, defined by $W_n:=\{k\in\Z\mid\forall x\in S$, $ k\cdot …
Let X be a locally compact Polish space and G a non-discrete Polish ANR group. By C(X,G), we denote the topological group of all continuous maps f:X \to G endowed with the Whitney (graph) topology and by C_c(X,G) the subgroup consisting of all maps with compact support. It is known that if X is compact and non-discrete then the space C(X,G) is an l_2-manifold. In this article we show that if X is non-compact and not end-discrete then C_c(X,G) is an (R^\infty \times l_2)-manifold, and moreover the pair (C(X,G), C_c(X,G)) is locally homeomorphic to the pair of the box and the small box powers of…
For a non-compact n-manifold M let H(M) denote the group of homeomorphisms of M endowed with the Whitney topology and H_c(M) the subgroup of H(M) consisting of homeomorphisms with compact support. It is shown that the group H_c(M) is locally contractible and the identity component H_0(M) of H(M) is an open normal subgroup in H_c(M). This induces the topological factorization H_c(M) \approx H_0(M) \times \M_c(M) for the mapping class group \M_c(M) = H_c(M)/H_0(M) with the discrete topology. Furthermore, for any non-compact surface M, the pair (H(M), H_c(M)) is locally homeomorphic to (\square^w…
We study the Golomb spaces of Dedekind domains with torsion class group. In particular, we show that a homeomorphism between two such spaces sends prime ideals into prime ideals and preserves the $P$-adic topology on $R\setminus P$. Under certain hypothesis, we show that we can associate to a prime ideal $P$ of $R$ a partially ordered set, constructed from some subgroups of the group of units of $R/P^n$, which is invariant under homeomorphisms, and use this result to show that the unique self-homeomorphisms of the Golomb space of $\mathbb{Z}$ are the identity and the multiplication by $-1$. We…
For any complex affine reductive group G and a fixed choice of maximal compact subgroup K, we show that the G-character variety of a free group strongly deformation retracts to the corresponding K-character space, which is a real semi-algebraic set. Combining this with constructive invariant theory and classical topological methods, we show that the SL(3,C)-character variety of a rank 2 free group is homotopic to an 8 sphere and the SL(2,C)-character variety of a rank 3 free group is homotopic to a 6 sphere.
