A Hausdorff topological group G is minimal if every continuous isomorphism f: G --> H between G and a Hausdorff topological group H is open. Significantly strengthening a 1981 result of Stoyanov, we prove the following theorem: For every infinite minimal abelian group G there exists a sequence {σ_n : n\in N} of cardinals such that w(G) = sup {σ_n : n \in N} and sup {2^{σ_n} : n \in N} \leq |G| \leq 2^{w(G)}, where w(G) is the weight of G. If G is an infinite minimal abelian group, then either |G| = 2^σfor some cardinal σ, or w(G) = min {σ: |G| \leq 2^σ}; moreover, the equality |G| = 2^{w(G)} holds whenever cf (w(G)) > ω. For a cardinal κ, we denote by F_κthe free abelian group with κmany generators. If F_κadmits a pseudocompact group topology, then κ\geq c, where c is the cardinality of the continuum. We show that the existence of a minimal pseudocompact group topology on F_c is equivalent to the Lusin's Hypothesis 2^{ω_1} = c. For κ> c, we prove that F_κadmits a (zero-dimensional) minimal pseudocompact group topology if and only if F_κhas both a minimal group topology and a pseudocompact group topology. If κ> c, then F_κadmits a connected minimal pseudocompact group topology of weight σif and only if κ= 2^σ. Finally, we establish that no infinite torsion-free abelian group can be equipped with a locally connected minimal group topology.
A space X is selectively sequentially pseudocompact if for every sequence (U_n) of non-empty open subsets of X, one can choose a point x_n in each U_n in such a way that the sequence (x_n) has a convergent subsequence. Let G be a group from one of the following three classes: (i) V-free groups, where V is an arbitrary variety of Abelian groups; (ii) torsion Abelian groups; (iii) torsion-free Abelian groups. Under the Singular Cardinal Hypothesis SCH, we prove that if G admits a pseudocompact group topology, then it can also be equipped with a selectively sequentially pseudocompact group topolo…
We show that every Abelian group satisfying a mild cardinal inequality admits a pseudocompact group topology from which all countable subgroups inherit the maximal totally bounded topology (we say that such a topology satisfies property $\h$). Every pseudocompact Abelian group $G$ with cardinality $|G|\leq 2^{2^\cc}$ satisfies this inequality and therefore admits a pseudocompact group topology with property $\h$. Under the Singular Cardinal Hypothesis (SCH) this criterion can be combined with an analysis of the algebraic structure of pseudocompact groups to prove that every pseudocompact Abeli…
For a cardinal k, generalizing a recent result of Comfort and van Mill, we prove that every k-pseudocompact abelian group of weight >k has some proper dense k-pseudocompact subgroup and admits some strictly finer k-pseudocompact group topology.
Two non-discrete Hausdorff group topologies $τ, δ$ on a group $G$ are called {\it transversal} if the least upper bound $τ\vee δ$ of $τ$ and $δ$ is the discrete topology. In this paper, we discuss the existence of transversal group topologies on locally pseudocompact, locally precompact or locally compact groups. We prove that each locally pseudocompact, connected topological group satisfies CSP, which gives an affirmative answer to a problem posed by Dikranjan, Tkachenko and Yaschenko in 2006. For a compact normal subgroup $K$ of a locally compact totally disconnected group $G$, if $G$ admits…
In this paper, we describe the relationship between the quasi-component q(G) of a (perfectly) minimal pseudocompact abelian group G and the quasi-component q(\widetilde G) of its completion. Specifically, we characterize the pairs (C,A) of compact connected abelian groups C and subgroups A such that A \cong q(G) and C \cong q(\widetilde G). As a consequence, we show that for every positive integer n or n=ω, there exist plenty of abelian pseudocompact perfectly minimal n-dimensional groups G such that the quasi-component of G is not dense in the quasi-component of the completion of G.
We present a series of examples of precompact, noncompact, reflexive topological Abelian groups. Some of them are pseudocompact or even countably compact, but we show that there exist precompact non-pseudocompact reflexive groups as well. It is also proved that every pseudocompact Abelian group is a quotient of a reflexive pseudocompact group with respect to a closed reflexive pseudocompact subgroup.
We say that a topological space X is selectively sequentially pseudocompact (SSP for short) if for every sequence (U_n) of non-empty open subsets of X, one can choose a point x_n in U_n for every n in such a way that the sequence (x_n) has a convergent subsequence. We show that the class of SSP spaces is closed under taking arbitrary products and continuous images, contains the class of all dyadic spaces and forms a proper subclass of the class of strongly pseudocompact spaces introduced recently by García-Ferreira and Ortiz-Castillo. We investigate basic properties of this new class and its r…
In this paper, we study precompact abelian groups G that contain no sequence {x_n} such that {0} \cup {\pm x_n : n \in N} is infinite and quasi-convex in G, and x_n --> 0. We characterize groups with this property in the following classes of groups: (a) bounded precompact abelian groups; (b) minimal abelian groups; (c) totally minimal abelian groups; (d) ω-bounded abelian groups. We also provide examples of minimal abelian groups with this property, and show that there exists a minimal pseudocompact abelian group with the same property; furthermore, under Martin's Axiom, the group may be chose…
We present a wide class of reflexive, precompact, non-compact, Abelian topological groups $G$ determined by three requirements. They must have the Baire property, satisfy the \textit{open refinement condition}, and contain no infinite compact subsets. This combination of properties guarantees that all compact subsets of the dual group $G^\wedge$ are finite. We also show that many (non-reflexive) precompact Abelian groups are quotients of reflexive precompact Abelian groups. This includes all precompact almost metrizable groups with the Baire property and their products. Finally, given a compac…
In this note we show that if $G$ is a countably infinite abelian group such that $nG=0$ for some integer $n$, then the only locally minimal group topology on $G$ is the discrete one.
For a locally quasi-convex (lqc) abelian group $G$, we give the first description of all compatible group topologies on $G$ and apply this result to the Mackey group problem for lqc groups. We characterize lqc abelian groups which are Mackey groups or admit a Mackey group topology and provide a characterization of two Mackey groups whose product is Mackey. We obtain the first characterization of locally convex spaces which are Mackey groups.
(1) Every infinite, Abelian compact (Hausdorff) group K admits 2^|K|-many dense, non-Haar-measurable subgroups of cardinality |K|. When K is nonmetrizable, these may be chosen to be pseudocompact. (2) Every infinite Abelian group G admits a family A of 2^2^|G|-many pairwise nonhomeomorphic totally bounded group topologies such that no nontrivial sequence in G converges in any of the topologies T in A. (For some G one may arrange w(G,T) < 2^|G| for some T in A.) (3) Every infinite Abelian group $G$ admits a family B of 2^2^|G|-many pairwise nonhomeomorphic totally bounded group topologies, with…
For a compact Hausdorff abelian group K and its subgroup H, one defines the g-closure g(H) of H in K as the subgroup consisting of $χ\in K$ such that $χ(a_n)\longrightarrow 0$ in T=R/Z for every sequence {a_n} in $\hat K$ (the Pontryagin dual of K) that converges to 0 in the topology that H induces on $\hat K$. We prove that every countable subgroup of a compact Hausdorff group is g-closed, and thus give a positive answer to two problems of Dikranjan, Milan and Tonolo. We also show that every g-closed subgroup of a compact Hausdorff group is realcompact. The techniques developed in the paper a…
Let G be an abelian group. For a subset A of G, Cyc(A) denotes the set of all elements x of G such that the cyclic subgroup generated by x is contained in A, and G is said to have the small subgroup generating property (abbreviated to SSGP) if the smallest subgroup of G generated by Cyc(U) is dense in G for every neighbourhood U of zero of G. SSGP groups form a proper subclass of the class of minimally almost periodic groups. Comfort and Gould asked for a characterization of abelian groups G which admit an SSGP group topology, and they solved this problem for bounded torsion groups (which have…
We prove that if there are $\mathfrak c$ incomparable selective ultrafilters then, for every infinite cardinal $κ$ such that $κ^ω=κ$, there exists a group topology on the free Abelian group of cardinality $κ$ without nontrivial convergent sequences and such that every finite power is countably compact. In particular, there are arbitrarily large countably compact groups. This answers a 1992 question of D. Dikranjan and D. Shakhmatov.
Every proper closed subgroup of a connected Hausdorff group must have index at least c, the cardinality of the continuum. 70 years ago Markov conjectured that a group G can be equipped with a connected Hausdorff group topology provided that every subgroup of G which is closed in all Hausdorff group topologies on G has index at least c. Counter-examples in the non-abelian case were provided 25 years ago by Pestov and Remus, yet the problem whether Markov's Conjecture holds for abelian groups G remained open. We resolve this problem in the positive.
We study final group topologies and their relations to compactness properties. In particular, we are interested in situations where a colimit or direct limit is locally compact, a k_ω-space, or locally k_ω. As a first application, we show that unitary forms of complex Kac-Moody groups can be described as the colimit of an amalgam of subgroups (in the category of Hausdorff topological groups, and the category of k_ω-groups). Our second application concerns Pontryagin duality theory for the classes of almost metrizable topological abelian groups, resp., locally k_ωtopological abelian groups, whi…
We prove that an abelian group admits a minimally almost periodic (MinAP) group topology if and only if it is connected in its Markov-Zariski topology. In particular, every unbounded abelian group admits a MinAP group topology. This answers positively a question set by Comfort, as well as several weaker forms proposed recently by Gabriyelyan. Using this characterization we answer also two open questions of Gould. We prove that a subgroup H of an abelian group G can be realized as the von Neumann kernel of G equipped with some Hausdorff group topology if and only if H is contained in the connec…
Under $\mathfrak{p} = \mathfrak{c}$, we answer Question 24 of \cite{dikranjan&shakhmatov3} for cardinality ${\mathfrak c}$ , by showing that if a non-torsion Abelian group of size continuum admits a countably compact Hausdorff group topology, then it admits a countably compact Hausdorff group topology with non-trivial convergent sequences.
We obtain a forcing construction that shows that it is consistent that the torsion-free Abelian group $\mathbb{Q}^{(λ)}$ admits a Hausdorff group topology which is also $\mathcal{U}$-compact and contains no non-trivial convergent sequences, where $λ$ is a cardinal whose cofinality is $ω$ and $\mathcal{U}$ is a selective ultrafilter. This answers a question posed in arXiv:1904.05928.
In the general context of functorial topologies, we prove that in the lattice of all group topologies on an abelian group, the infimum between the Bohr topology and the natural topology is the profinite topology. The profinite topology and its connection to other functorial topologies is the main objective of the paper. We are particularly interested in the poset C(G) of all finite-index subgroups of an abelian group G, since it is a local base for the profinite topology of G. We describe various features of the poset C(G) (its cardinality, its cofinality, etc.) and we characterize the abelian…
We prove that the existence of a selective ultrafilter implies the existence of a countably compact Hausdorff group topology on the free Abelian group of size continuum. As a consequence, we show that the existence of a selective ultrafilter implies the existence of a Wallace semigroup (i.e., a countably compact both-sided cancellative topological semigroup which is not a topological group).
We denote by C_p(X,G) the group of all continuous functions from a space X to a topological group G endowed with the topology of pointwise convergence. We say that spaces X and Y are G-equivalent provided that the topological groups C_p(X,G) and C_p(Y,G) are topologically isomorphic. We investigate which topological properties are preserved by G-equivalence, with a special emphasis being placed on characterizing topological properties of X in terms of those of C_p(X,G). Since R-equivalence coincides with l-equivalence, this line of research "includes" major topics of the classical C_p-theory o…
The notion of locally quasi-convex abelian group, introduce by Vilenkin, is extended to maximally almost-periodic non-necessarily abelian groups. For that purpose, we look at certain bornologies that can be defined on the set $\hbox{rep}(G)$ of all finite dimensional continuous representations on a topological group $G$ in order to associate well behaved group topologies (dual topologies) to them. As a consequence, the lattice of all Hausdorff totally bounded group topologies on a group $G$ is shown to be isomorphic to the lattice of certain special subsets of $\hbox{rep}(G_d)$. Moreover, gene…
Topological properties of the free topological group and the free abelian topological group on a space have been thoroughly studied since the 1940s. In this paper, we study the free topological $\mathbb{R}$-vector space $V(X)$ on $X$. We show that $V(X)$ is a quotient of the free abelian topological group on $[-1,1]\times X$, and use this to prove topological vector space analogues of existing results for free topological groups on pseudocompact spaces. As an application, we show that certain families of subspaces of $V(X)$ satisfy the so-called $\textit{algebraic colimit property}$ defined in…
A sequence $\{a_n\}$ in a group $G$ is a {\em $T$-sequence} if there is a Hausdorff group topology $τ$ on $G$ such that $a_n\stackrelτ\longrightarrow 0$. In this paper, we provide several sufficient conditions for a sequence in an abelian group to be a $T$-sequence, and investigate special sequences in the Prüfer groups $\mathbb{Z}(p^\infty)$. We show that for $p\neq 2$, there is a Hausdorff group topology $τ$ on $\mathbb{Z}(p^\infty)$ that is determined by a $T$-sequence, which is close to being maximally almost-periodic--in other words, the von Neumann radical $\mathbf{n}(\mathbb{Z}(p^\infty…
We discuss the class of paratopological groups which admits a transversal, $T_{1}$-independent and $T_{1}$-complementary paratopological group topology. We show that the Sorgenfrey line does not admit a $T_{1}$-complementary Hausdorff paratopological group topology, which gives a negative answer to \cite[Problem 10]{AT2017}. We give a very useful criterion for transversality in term of submaximal paratopological group topology, and prove that if a non-discrete paratopological group topology $G$ contains a central subgroup which admits a transversal paratopological group topology, then so does …
We study free topological groups defined over uniform spaces in some subclasses of the class NA of non-archimedean groups. Our descriptions of the corresponding topologies show that for metrizable uniformities the corresponding free balanced, free abelian and free Boolean NA groups are also metrizable. Graev type ultra-metrics determine the corresponding free topologies. Such results are in a striking contrast with free balanced and free abelian topological groups cases (in standard varieties). Another contrasting advantage is that the induced topological group actions on free abelian NA group…
A Hausdorff topological group $(G,τ)$ is called an $s$-group and $τ$ is called an $s$-topology if there is a set $S$ of sequences in $G$ such that $τ$ is the finest Hausdorff group topology on $G$ in which every sequence of $S$ converges to the unit. The class $\mathbf{S}$ of all $s$-groups contains all sequential Hausdorff groups and it is finitely multiplicative. A quotient group of an $s$-group is an $s$-group. For a non-discrete topological group $(G,τ)$ the following three assertions are equivalent: 1) $(G,τ)$ is an $s$-group, 2) $(G,τ)$ is a quotient group of a Graev free topological gro…
For a Tychonoff space $X$, denote by $\mathfrak{P}$ the family of topological properties $\mathcal{P}$ of being a convergent sequence or being a compact, sequentially compact, countably compact, pseudocompact and functionally bounded subset of $X$, respectively. A maximally almost periodic $(MAP$) group $G$ respects $\mathcal{P}$ if $\mathcal{P}(G)=\mathcal{P}(G^+)$, where $G^+$ is the group $G$ endowed with the Bohr topology. We study relations between different respecting properties from $\mathfrak{P}$ and show that the respecting convergent sequences (=the Schur property) is the weakest one…
Given a $T$-sequence on a countable abelian group $G$, we prove that there exists $2^{2^{|G|}}$ Hausdorff group topologies in which this sequence converges to $0$. This answers a question posed in Intern. J. Math. Math. Sci. {\bf 24}(3) (2000), 145-148.
This paper is part of a program to understand topologies on spaces of valuations. We fix an ordered abelian group $Γ$ and an integral domain $R$. We study the relation between a topology on $Γ_\infty$ and the induced topology on the set $\mathcal W_Γ$ of all valuations of $R$ taking values in $Γ_\infty$. For instance, we give a criterion for $ \mathcal W_Γ$ to be closed in $\left(Γ_\infty\right)^R$. We also discuss the effect of this criterion for natural topologies on $Γ_\infty$.
The famous Banach-Mazur problem, which asks if every infinite-dimensional Banach space has an infinite-dimensional separable quotient Banach space, has remained unsolved for 85 years, though it has been answered in the affirmative for reflexive Banach spaces and even Banach spaces which are duals. The analogous problem for locally convex spaces has been answered in the negative, but has been shown to be true for large classes of locally convex spaces including all non-normable Fréchet spaces. In this paper the analogous problem for topological groups is investigated. Indeed there are four natu…
We further investigate the weak topology generated by the irreducible unitary representations of a group $G$. A deep result due to Ernest \cite{Ernest1971} and Hughes \cite{Hughes1973} asserts that every weakly compact subset of a locally compact (LC) group $G$ is compact in the LC-topology, generalizing thereby a previous result of Glicksberg \cite{glicks1962} for abelian locally compact (LCA) groups. Here, we first survey some recent findings on the weak topology and establish some new results about the preservation of several compact-like properties when going from the weak topology to the …
Let $G$ be an abelian group, and $F$ a downward directed family of subsets of $G$. The finest topology $\mathcal{T}$ on $G$ under which $F$ converges to $0$ has been described by I.Protasov and E.Zelenyuk. In particular, their description yields a criterion for $\mathcal{T}$ to be Hausdorff. They then show that if $F$ is the filter of cofinite subsets of a countable subset $X\subseteq G$, there is a simpler criterion: $\mathcal{T}$ is Hausdorff if and only if for every $g\in G-\{0\}$ and positive integer $n$, there is an $S\in F$ such that $g$ does not lie in the n-fold sum $n(S\cup\{0\}\cup-S…
The paper deals with group dualities. A group duality is simply a pair $(G, H)$ where $G$ is an abstract abelian group and $H$ a subgroup of characters defined on $G$. A group topology $τ$ defined on $G$ is {\it compatible} with the group duality (also called dual pair) $(G, H)$ if $G$ equipped with $τ$ has dual group $H$. A topological group $(G, τ)$ gives rise to the natural duality $(G, G^\wedge)$, where $G^\wedge$ stands for the group of continuous characters on $G$. We prove that the existence of a $g$-barrelled topology on $G$ compatible with the dual pair $(G, G^\wedge)$ is equivalent t…
Assuming the existence of $\mathfrak c$ incomparable selective ultrafilters, we classify the non-torsion Abelian groups of cardinality $\mathfrak c$ that admit a countably compact group topology. We show that for each $κ\in [\mathfrak c, 2^\mathfrak c]$ each of these groups has a countably compact group topology of weight $κ$ without non-trivial convergent sequences and another that has convergent sequences. Assuming the existence of $2^\mathfrak c$ selective ultrafilters, there are at least $2^\mathfrak c$ non homeomorphic such topologies in each case and we also show that every Abelian group…

Let N be the set of non-negative integer numbers, T the circle group and c the cardinality of the continuum. Given an abelian group G of size at most 2^c and a countable family F of infinite subsets of G, we construct "Baire many" monomorphisms p: G --> T^c such that p(E) is dense in {y in T^c : ny=0} whenever n in N, E in F, nE={0} and {x in E: mx=g} is finite for all g in G and m such that n=mk for some k in N--{1}. We apply this result to obtain an algebraic description of countable potentially dense subsets of abelian groups, thereby making a significant progress towards a solution of a pr…
A twisted sum in the category of topological abelian groups is a short exact sequence $0\to Y\to X \to Z\to 0$ where all maps are assumed to be continuous and open onto their images. The twisted sum splits if it is equivalent to $0\to Y\to Y \times Z \to Z\to 0$. \par We study the class $\ST$ of topological groups $G$ for which every twisted sum $0\to \T\to X \to G\to 0$ splits. We prove that this class contains locally precompact groups, sequential direct limits of locally compact groups and topological groups with $\mathcal{L}_\infty$ topologies. We also prove that it is closed by taking ope…
In a compact abelian group $X$, a characterized subgroup is a subgroup $H$ such that there exists a sequence of characters $\vs=(v_n)$ of $X$ such that $H=\{x\in X:v_n(x)\to 0 \text{ in } \T\}$. Gabriyelyan proved for $X=\T$, that $\{x\in\T:n!x\to 0 \text{ in }\T\}$ is not an $F_σ$-set. In this paper, we give a complete description of the $F_σ$-subgroups of $\T$ characterized by sequences of integers $\vs=(v_n)$ such that $v_n|v_{n+1}$ for all $n\in\N$ (we show that these are exactly the countable characterized subgroups). Moreover in the general setting of compact metrizable abelian groups, w…
Let $G$ be an infinite locally compact group and $\aleph$ a cardinal satisfying $\aleph_0\le\aleph\le w(G)$ for the weight $w(G)$ of $G$. It is shown that there is a closed subgroup $N$ of $G$ with $w(N)=\aleph$. Sample consequences are: (1) Every infinite compact group contains an infinite closed metric subgroup. (2) For a locally compact group $G$ and $\aleph$ a cardinal satisfying $\aleph_0\le\aleph\le \lw(G)$, where $\lw(G)$ is the local weight of $G$, there are either no infinite compact subgroups at all or there is a compact subgroup $N$ of $G$ with $w(N)=\aleph$. (3) For an infinite abe…
Given a topological group $ G $ and a Hausdorff topological group $ A $ on which $ G $ acts continuously and compatibly with the group operation of $ A $, we study the set of continuous cocycles of $ G $ with value in $ A $. This set is a function space and can be endowed with several topologies. By imposing a suitable function space topology on the set of cocycles of $ G $ with value in $ A $, we propose a topological study of this set, and we prove, as our first main result, that if $ A $ is a compact group having a presentation as an inverse limit of compact and Hausdorff topological groups…
