We denote by C_p(X,G) the group of all continuous functions from a space X to a topological group G endowed with the topology of pointwise convergence. We say that spaces X and Y are G-equivalent provided that the topological groups C_p(X,G) and C_p(Y,G) are topologically isomorphic. We investigate which topological properties are preserved by G-equivalence, with a special emphasis being placed on characterizing topological properties of X in terms of those of C_p(X,G). Since R-equivalence coincides with l-equivalence, this line of research "includes" major topics of the classical C_p-theory of Arhangel'skii as a particular case (when G = R). We introduce a new class of TAP groups that contains all groups having no small subgroups (NSS groups). We prove that: (i) for a given NSS group G, a G-regular space X is pseudocompact if and only if C_p(X,G) is TAP, and (ii) for a metrizable NSS group G, a G^*-regular space X is compact if and only if C_p(X,G) is a TAP group of countable tightness. In particular, a Tychonoff space X is pseudocompact (compact) if and only if C_p(X,R) is a TAP group (of countable tightness). We show that Tychonoff spaces X and Y are T-equivalent if and only if their free precompact Abelian groups are topologically isomorphic, where T stays for the quotient group R/Z. As a corollary, we obtain that T-equivalence implies G-equivalence for every Abelian precompact group G. We establish that T-equivalence preserves the following topological properties: compactness, pseudocompactness, sigma-compactness, the property of being a Lindelof Sigma-space, the property of being a compact metrizable space, the (finite) number of connected components, connectedness, total disconnectedness. An example of R-equivalent (that is, l-equivalent) spaces that are not T-equivalent is constructed.
Let $T\subset\mathbb{R}$ and $(X,\mathcal{U})$ be a uniform space with an at most countable gage of pseudometrics $\{d_p:p\in\mathcal{P}\}$ of the uniformity $\mathcal{U}$. Given $f\in X^T$ (=the family of all functions from $T$ into $X$), the approximate variation of $f$ is the two-parameter family $\{V_{\varepsilon,p}(f):\varepsilon>0,p\in\mathcal{P}\}$, where $V_{\varepsilon,p}(f)$ is the greatest lower bound of Jordan's variations $V_p(g)$ on $T$ with respect to $d_p$ of all functions $g\in X^T$ such that $d_p(f(t),g(t))\le\varepsilon$ for all $t\in T$. We establish the following pointwise…
For a compact space $K$ we denote by $C_w(K)$ ($C_p(K)$) the space of continuous real-valued functions on $K$ endowed with the weak (pointwise) topology. In this paper we address the following basic question which seems to be open: Suppose that $K$ is an infinite (metrizable) compact space. Is it true that $C_w(K)$ and $C_p(K)$ are homeomorphic? We show that the answer is "no", provided $K$ is an infinite compact metrizable $C$-space. In particular our proof works for any infinite compact metrizable finite-dimemsional space $K$.
We generalize the concept of the pointwise supremum of real-valued functions to the pointfree setting. The concept itself admits a direct and intuitive formulation which makes no mention of points. But our aim here is to investigate pointwise suprema of subsets of $\mathcal{R}L$, the family of continuous real valued functions on a locale, or pointfree space. Our setting is the category $\mathbf{W}$ of archimedean lattice-ordered groups ($\ell$-groups) with designated weak order unit, with morphisms which preserve the group and lattice operations and take units to units. A main result is the ap…
The characterization of the pointwise limits of the sequences of Świątkowski functions is given. Modifications of Świątkowski property with respect to different topologies finer than the Euclidean topology are discussed.
For a compact space $K$ we denote by $C_w(K)$ ($C_p(K)$) the space of continuous real-valued functions on $K$ endowed with the weak (pointwise) topology. In this paper we discuss the following basic question which seems to be open: Let $K$ and $L$ be infinite compact spaces. Can it happen that $C_w(K)$ and $C_p(L)$ are homeomorphic? M. Krupski proved that the above problem has a negative answer when $K=L$ and $K$ is finite-dimensional and metrizable. We extend this result to the class of finite-dimensional Valdivia compact spaces $K$.
We prove that every point-finite family of nonempty functionally open sets in a topological space $X$ has the cardinality at most an infinite cardinal $κ$ if and only if $w(X)\leqκ$ for every Valdivia compact space $Y\subseteq C_p(X)$. Correspondingly a Valdivia compact space $Y$ has the weight at most an infinite cardinal $κ$ if and only if every point-finite family of nonempty open sets in $C_p(Y)$ has the cardinality at most $κ$, that is $p(C_p(Y))\leq κ$. Besides, it was proved that $w(Y)=p(C_p(Y))$ for every linearly ordered compact $Y$. In particular, a Valdivia compact space or linearly…
Let $X$ be a uniform space and $U(X)$ the linear space of real-valued uniformly continuous functions on $X$. Our main objective is to give a number of properties characterizing the fact that $U(X)$ is stable under pointwise product in case $X$ is a metric space. Some of these characterizations hold in much more general circumstances.
For a set $X\sbst\R$, let $B(X)\sbst\R^X$ denote the space of Borel real-valued functions on $X$, with the topology inherited from the Tychonoff product $\R^X$. Assume that for each countable $A\sbst B(X)$, each $f$ in the closure of $A$ is in the closure of $A$ under pointwise limits of sequences of partial functions. We show that in this case, $B(X)$ is countably Fréchet--Urysohn, that is, each point in the closure of a countable set is a limit of a sequence of elements of that set. This solves a problem of Arnold Miller. The continuous version of this problem is equivalent to a notorious op…
We solve a problem on a construction of a separately continuous mapping with the given diagonal, which is the pointwise limit of a sequence of continuous mappings valued in an equiconnected space. We construct an example of a closed-valued separately continuous mapping $f:[0,1]^2\to \mathbb R$ with an everywhere discontinuous diagonal. The example shows that the results on the joint continuity point set of compact-valued separately continuous mappings can not be generalized to the case of closed-valued mappings.
The cross topology $γ$ on a product of topological spaces $X$ and $Y$ is the collection of all sets $G\subseteq X\times Y$ such that the intersection of $G$ with every vertical line and every horizontal line is an open subset of either vertical or horizontal line, respectively. For spaces $X$ and $Y$ from a wide class, which includes all spaces $\mathbb R^n$, we prove that there exists a separately continuous mapping $f:X\times Y\to (X\times Y,γ)$ which is not a pointwise limit of a sequence of continuous functions. Also we prove that every separately continuous mapping is a pointwise limit of…
In this paper, we mainly study the function spaces related to H-sober spaces. For an irreducible subset system H and $T_{0}$ spaces $X$ and $Y$, it is proved that $Y$ is H-sober iff the function space $\mathbb{C}(X, Y)$ of all continuous functions $f : X\longrightarrow Y$ equipped with the topology of pointwise convergence is H-sober iff the function space $\mathbb{C}(X, Y)$ equipped with the Isbell topology is H-sober. One immediate corollary is that for a $T_{0}$ space $X$, $Y$ is a sober space (resp., $d$-space, well-filtered space) iff the function space $\mathbb{C}(X, Y)$ equipped with th…
Molodtsov initiated the concept of soft sets in Molodtsov D. Maji et al. defined some operations on soft sets in Maji P. K., Bismas R., Roy A. R. The concept of soft topological space was introduced by some authors. In this paper, we introduce the concept of the pointwise topology of soft topological spaces and the properties of soft mappings spaces. Finally, we investigate the relationships between some soft mappings spaces.
We construct an LUR-norm on the space C(K) which is lower semicontinuous with respect to the pointwise topology for any Fedorchuk compactum of height 3.
Let $Γ$ be a Polish space and let $K$ be a separable and pointwise compact set of real-valued functions on $Γ$. It is shown that if each function in $K$ has only countably many discontinuities then $C(K)$ may be equipped with a $T_p$-lower semicontinuous and locally uniformly convex norm, equivalent to the supremum norm.
A topological space $X$ is Baire if the intersection of any sequence of open dense subsets of $X$ is dense in $X$. Let $C_p(X,[0,1])$ denote the space of all continuous $[0,1]$-valued functions on a Tychonoff space $X$ with the topology of pointwise convergence. In this paper, we have obtained a characterization when the function space $C_p(X,[0,1])$ is Baire for a Tychonoff space $X$ all separable closed subsets of which are $C$-embedded. In particular, this characterization is true for normal spaces and, hence, for metrizable spaces. Moreover, we obtained that the space $C_p(X,[0,1])$ is Bai…
Some new classes of compacta $K$ are considered for which $C(K)$ endowed with the pointwise topology has a countable cover by sets of small local norm--diameter.
We study the approximate fixed point property (AFPP) for continuous single-valued functions and for continuous multivalued functions in digital topology. We extend what is known about these notions and discuss errors that have appeared in the literature.
Let E be a topological space and F a uniform space. We introduce a new topology (in fact a uniform structure) called the V-congergence on the space of applications from E to F such that C(E,F) is closed for this topology and the restriction of this topology to C(E,F) is equivalent to pointwise convergence. In other words this topology is the coarsest preserving continuity. We give a criterion of convergence for this topology not involving the limit. Among properties preserved are mesurability and alpha-borelianity for a countable ordinal alpha.
We prove that for each Polish space X, the space C(X) of continuous real-valued functions on X satisfies a strong version of the Pytkeev property, if endowed with the compact-open topology. (This shows that whereas it need not be metrizable, it is "very close" to that.) We also consider the Pytkeev property in the case where C(X) is endowed with the topology of pointwise convergence.
In this paper we consider some properties of a space B(X) of Borel functions on a set of reals X, with pointwise topology, that are stronger than separability.
With a complete Heyting algebra $L$ as the truth value table, we prove that the collections of open filters of stratified $L$-valued topological spaces form a monad. By means of $L$-Scott topology and the specialization $L$-order, we get that the algebras of open filter monad are precisely $L$-continuous lattices.
For a Tychonoff space $X$, we denote by $C_p(X)$ the space of all real-valued continuous functions on $X$ with the topology of pointwise convergence. We give the functional characterization of the covering property of Hurewicz.
For the set C(X) of real-valued continuous functions on a Tychonoff space X, the compact-open topology on C(X) is a "set-open topology". This paper studies the separation and countability properties of the space C(X) having the topology given by the join of the compact-open topology and an "open-set topology" called the open-point topology, that was introduced in [6].
Scalarization method is an important tool in the study of vector optimization as corresponding solutions of vector optimization problems can be found by solving scalar optimization problems. This is applied by Du (2010) [A note on cone metric fixed point theory and its equivalence, Nonlinear Analysis 72 2259-2261] to investigate the equivalence of vectorial versions of fixed point theorems of contractive mappings in generalized cone metric spaces and scalar versions of fixed point theorems in general metric spaces in usual sense. In this paper we find out that the topology induced by topologic…
For a Tychonoff space $X$, we denote by $C_k(X)$ the space of all real-valued continuous functions on X with the compact-open topology. In this paper, we have gave characterization for $C_k(X)$ to satisfy $S_{fin}(S, S)$.
Modifying a construction of W. Marciszewski we prove (in ZFC) that there exists a subspace of the real line $\mathbb{R}$, such that the realcompact space $C_p(X)$ of continuous real-valued functions on $X$ with the pointwise convergence topology does not admit a continuous bijection onto a $σ$-compact space. This answers a question of Arhangel'skii.
