In this paper we focus on the set-open topologies on the group $\mathcal{H}(X)$ of all self-homeomorphisms of a topological space $X$ which yield continuity of both the group operations, product and inverse function. As a consequence, we make the more general case of Dijkstra's theorem. In this case a homogeneously encircling family $\mathcal{B}$ consists of regular open sets and the closure of every set from $\mathcal{B}$ is contained in the finite union of connected sets from $\mathcal{B}$. Also we proved that the zero-cozero topology of $\mathcal{H}(X)$ is the relativisation to $\mathcal{H}(X)$ of the compact-open topology of $\mathcal{H}(βX)$ for any Tychonoff space $X$ and every homogeneous zero-dimensional space $X$ can be represented as the quotient space of a topological group with respect to a closed subgroup.
We prove that for any non-compact connected surface $M$ the group $H_c(M)$ of compactly suported homeomorphisms of $M$ endowed with the Whitney topology is homeomorphic to $R^\infty\times l_2$ or $Z\times R^\infty\times l_2$.
We prove that no subgroup of the group of boundary-fixing homeomorphisms of a compact surface whose action on the interior of the surface is sufficiently transitive can be Roelcke precompact with the topology inherited from the compact-open topology.
The $Golomb$ (resp. $Kirch$) topology on the set $\mathbb Z^\bullet$ of nonzero integers is generated by the base consisting of arithmetic progressions $a+b\mathbb Z=\{a+bn:n\in\mathbb Z\}$ where $a\in\mathbb Z^\bullet$ and $b$ is a (square-free) number, coprime with $a$. In 2019 Dario Spirito proved that the space of nonzero integers endowed with the Golomb topology admits only two self-homeomorphisms. In this paper we prove an analogous fact for the space of nonzero integers endowed with the Kirch topology: it also admits exactly two self-homeomorphisms.
We show that the homeomorphism group of a surface without boundary does not admit a Hausdorff group topology strictly coarser than the compact-open topology. In combination with known automatic continuity results, this implies that the compact-open topology is the unique Hausdorff separable group topology on the group if the surface is closed or the complement in a closed surface of either a finite set or the union of a finite set and a Cantor set.
We study the topological structure and the topological dynamics of groups of homeomorphisms of scattered spaces. For a large class of them (including the homeomorphism group of any ordinal space or of any locally compact scattered space), we establish Roelcke-precompactness and amenability, classify all closed normal subgroups and compute the universal minimal flow. As a by-product, we classify up to isomorphism the homeomorphism groups of compact ordinal spaces.
We prove that in a certain class E of nonseparable Banach spaces the norm topology of the dual ball is definable in terms of its weak* topology. Thus, any weak* homeomorphism between duals balls of spaces in E is automatically norm-continuous.
We show that the topology of pointwise convergence on scattered spaces is compatible with the group structure of their homeomorphism group. We then establish a few topological properties of the homeomorphism group of the first uncountable ordinal, such as amenability and Roelcke-precompactness.
The union of a directed family of topological groups can be equipped with two noteworthy topologies: the finest topology making each injection continuous, and the finest group topology making each injection continuous. This begs the question of whether the two topologies coincide. If the family is countable, the answer is well known in many cases. We study this question in the context of so-called long families, which are as far as possible from countable ones. As a first step, we present answers to the question for families of group-valued continuous maps and homeomorphism groups, and provide…
Let X be a zero-dimensional compact space such that all non-empty clopen subsets of X are homeomorphic to each other, and let H(X) be the group of all self-homeomorphisms of X with the compact-open topology. We prove that the Roelcke compactification of H(X) can be identified with the semigroup of all closed relations on X whose domain and range are equal to X. We use this to prove that the group H(X) is topologically simple and minimal, in the sense that it does not admit a strictly coarser Hausdorff group topology.
Let $PL_0(I)$ represent the group of orientation-preserving piecewise-linear homeomorphisms of the unit interval which admit finitely many breaks in slope, under the operation of composition. We find a non-solvable group $W$ and show that $W$ embeds in every non-solvable subgroup of $PL_0(I)$. We find mild conditions under which other non-solvable subgroups ($B$, $(\wr\Z\wr)^{\infty}$, $(\Z\wr)^{\infty}$, and $^{\infty}(\wr\Z)$) embed in subgroups of $PL_0(I)$. We show that all solvable subgroups of $PL_0(I)$ embed in all non-solvable subgroups of $PL_0(I)$. These results continue to apply if …
A Hausdorff topological group topology on a group $G$ is the minimum (Hausdorff) group topology if it is contained in every Hausdorff group topology on $G$. For every compact metrizable space $X$ containing an open $n$-cell, $n\ge2$, the homeomorphism group $H(X)$ has no minimum Hausdorff group topology. The homeomorphism groups of the Cantor set and the Hilbert cube have no minimum group topology. For every compact metrizable space $X$ containing a dense open one-manifold, $H(X)$ has the minimum group topology. Some, but not all, oligomorphic groups have the minimum group topology.
We produce two separate algebraic descriptions of the isomorphism classes of the solvable subgroups of the group PLo(I) of piecewise-linear orientation-preserving homeomorphisms of the unit interval under the operation of composition, and also of the solvable subgroups of the generalized R. Thompson groups F_n. The first description is as a set of isomorphism classes of groups which is closed under three algebraic operations, and the second is as the set of isomorphism classes of subgroups of a countable collection of easily described groups. We show the two descriptions are equivalent.
We investigate subgroups of the group PLo(I) of piecewise-linear, orientation-preserving homeomorphisms of the unit interval with finitely many breaks in slope, under the operation of composition, and also subgroups of the generalized Thompson groups F_n. We find geometric criteria determining the derived length of any such group, and use this criteria to produce a geometric classification of the solvable and non-solvable subgroups of PLo(I) and of the F_n. We also show that any standard restricted wreath product C wr T (of non-trivial groups) that embeds in PLo(I) or F_n must have T isomorphi…
We investigate subgroups of the group PLo(I) of piecewise-linear, orientation preserving homeomorphisms of the unit interval with finitely many breaks in slope, and also subgroups of Thompson's group F. We find geometric criteria determining the derived length of any such group, and use this criteria to classify the solvable and non-solvable subgroups of PLo(I) and of F. Let H be a subgroup of PL_o(I) or F. We find that H is solvable if and only if H is isomorphic to a group in a well described class R of groups. We also find that H is non-solvable if and only if we can embed a copy of a speci…
We study expansive dynamical systems from the viewpoint of general topology. We introduce the notions of orbit and refinement expansivity on topological spaces extending expansivity in the compact metric setting. Examples are given on non-Hausdorff compact spaces. Topological properties are studied in relation to separability axioms, metrizability and uniform expansivity.
For a non-compact n-manifold M let H(M) denote the group of homeomorphisms of M endowed with the Whitney topology and H_c(M) the subgroup of H(M) consisting of homeomorphisms with compact support. It is shown that the group H_c(M) is locally contractible and the identity component H_0(M) of H(M) is an open normal subgroup in H_c(M). This induces the topological factorization H_c(M) \approx H_0(M) \times \M_c(M) for the mapping class group \M_c(M) = H_c(M)/H_0(M) with the discrete topology. Furthermore, for any non-compact surface M, the pair (H(M), H_c(M)) is locally homeomorphic to (\square^w…
The group of compactly supported homeomorphisms on a Tychonoff space can be topologized in a number of ways, including as a colimit of homeomorphism groups with a given compact support, or as a subgroup of the homeomorphism group of its Stone-Čech compactification. A space is said to have the Compactly Supported Homeomorphism Property (CSHP) if these two topologies coincide. The authors provide necessary and sufficient conditions for finite products of ordinals equipped with the order topology to have CSHP. In addition, necessary conditions are presented for finite products and coproducts of s…
The topological and metrical equivalence of fractals is an important topic in analysis. In this paper, we use a class of finite state automata, called $Σ$-automaton, to construct psuedo-metric spaces, and then apply them to the study of classification of self-similar sets. We first introduce a notion of topology automaton of a fractal gasket, which is a simplified version of neighbor automaton; we show that a fractal gasket is homeomorphic to the psuedo-metric space induced by the topology automaton. Then we construct a universal map to show that psuedo-metric spaces induced by different autom…
We study the Golomb spaces of Dedekind domains with torsion class group. In particular, we show that a homeomorphism between two such spaces sends prime ideals into prime ideals and preserves the $P$-adic topology on $R\setminus P$. Under certain hypothesis, we show that we can associate to a prime ideal $P$ of $R$ a partially ordered set, constructed from some subgroups of the group of units of $R/P^n$, which is invariant under homeomorphisms, and use this result to show that the unique self-homeomorphisms of the Golomb space of $\mathbb{Z}$ are the identity and the multiplication by $-1$. We…
We prove a reconstruction theorem for homeomorphism groups of open sets in metrizable locally convex topological vector spaces. We show that certain small subgroups of the full homeomorphism group obey the conditions of the above theorem.
In this paper we introduce a general notion of weak extension property for embeddings induced by a group actions. As an example, for the group H(M, m) of measure-preserving homeomorphisms of a noncompact manifold M, we deduce weak type extension theorems, and as an application we exhibit the local contractibility of the group H_c(M, m) of measure-preserving homeomorphisms with compact support of a noncompact connected manifold M endowed with the Whitney topology.
We prove various reconstruction theorems about open subsets of normed spaces. E.g. if the uniformly continuous homeomorphism groups of two such sets are isomorphic, then this isomorphism is induced by a uniformly continuous homeomorphism between these open sets.
We contribute some information towards finding a general algorithm for constructing, for a given profinite group, $G$, a compact connected space, $X$, such that the full homeomorphism group, $H(X)$, with the compact-open topology is isomorphic to $G$ as a topological group. It is proposed that one should find a compact topological oriented graph $Γ$ such that $G\cong Aut(Γ)$. The replacement of the edges of $Γ$ by rigid continua should work as is exemplified in various instances where discrete graphs were used. It is shown here that the strategy can be implemented for profinite monothetic grou…
Suppose M is a noncompact connected PL 2-manifold and let H(M)_0 denote the identity component of the homeomorphism group of M with the compact-open topology. In this paper we classify the homotopy type of H(M)_0 by showing that {\cal H}(M)_0 has the homotopy type of the circle if M is the plane, an open or half open annulus, or the punctured projective plane. In all other cases we show that H(M)_0 is homotopically trivial.
Suppose M is a noncompact connected 2-manifold and m is a good Radon measure of M with m(partial M) = 0. Let H(M)_0 denote the identity component of the group of homeomorphisms of M equipped with the compact-open topology and let H(M; m)_0 denote the identity component of the subgroup consisting of m-preserving homeomorphisms of M. We use results of A.Fathi and R.Berlanga to show that H(M; m)_0 is a strong deformation retract of H(M)_0 and classify the topological type of H(M; m)_0.
Suppose M is a noncompact connected PL 2-manifold. In this paper we study the topological property of the triple (H(M)_0, H^PL(M)_0, H^PL, c(M)_0), where H(M)_0 is the identity component of the homeomorphism group {\cal H}(M) of M with the compact-open topology, and H^PL(M)_0 and H^PL, c(M)_0 are the identity components of the subgroups consisting of PL-homeomorphisms of M and ones with compact supports. We show that this triple is a (s^infty,sigma^infty,sigma^infty_f)-manifold and determine its topological type. We also study the subgroups of Lipschitz homeomorphisms.
Given a compact Lie group $G$, a reconstruction theorem for free $G$-manifolds is proved. As a by-product reconstruction results for locally trivial bundles are presented. Next, the main theorem is generalized to $G$-manifolds with one orbit type. These are the first reconstruction results in the category of $G$-spaces, showing also that the reconstruction in this category is very specific and involved.
This article is concerned with conjugacy problems arising in homeomorphisms group, Hom($F$), of unbounded subsets $F$ of normed vector spaces $E$. Given two homeomorphisms $f$ and $g$ in Hom($F$), it is shown how the existence of a conjugacy may be related to the existence of a common generalized eigenfunction of the associated Koopman operators. This common eigenfunction serves to build a topology on Hom($F$), where the conjugacy is obtained as limit of a sequence generated by the conjugacy operator, when this limit exists. The main conjugacy theorem is presented in a class of generalized Lip…

In this paper we deduce a local deformation lemma for uniform embeddings in a metric covering space over a compact manifold from the deformation lemma for embeddings of a compact subspace in a manifold. This implies the local contractibility of the group of uniform homeomorphisms of such a metric covering space under the uniform topology. Further more, combining with similarity transformation, this enables us to induce a global homotopy property of groups of uniform homeomorphisms of metric spaces with Euclidean ends. In particular, we show that the identity component of the group of uniform h…
Our purpose in this article is to prove that the group $H({\bf C})$ of homeomorphisms of the complex plane ${\bf C}$ is a metric group equipped with the metric induced by uniform convergence of homeomorphisms and their inverses on compacts and the set $$\left\{ h \in H({\bf C}) : ( \forall z \in {\bf C} )( h(z) \neq z ) \right\} $$ of fixed point free homeomorphisms of the complex plane is a conjugacy invariant dense $G_{δ}$ subset of $H({\bf C})$.
Let $Δ$ be a foliation on a topological manifold $X$, $Y$ be the space of leaves, and $p: X \to Y$ be the natural projection. Endow $Y$ with the factor topology with respect to $p$. Then the group $\mathcal{H}(X, Δ)$ of foliated (i.e. mapping leaves onto leaves) homeomorphisms of $X$ naturally acts on the space of leaves $Y$, which gives a homomorphism $ψ: \mathcal{H}(X, Δ) \to \mathcal{H}(Y)$. We present sufficient conditions when $ψ$ is continuous with respect to the corresponding compact open topologies. In fact similar results hold not only for foliations but for a more general class of pa…
We investigate the mapping class group of an orientable $ω$-bounded surface. Such a surface splits, by Nyikos's Bagpipe Theorem, into a union of a bag (a compact surface with boundary) and finitely many long pipes. The subgroup consisting of classes of homeomorphisms fixing the boundary of the bag is a normal subgroup and is a homomorphic image of the product of mapping class groups of the bag and the pipes.
Answering a question of Uspenskij, we prove that if $X$ is a closed manifold of dimension $2$ or higher or the Hilbert cube, then the universal minimal flow of $\mathrm{Homeo}(X)$ is not metrizable. In dimension $3$ or higher, we also show that the minimal $\mathrm{Homeo}(X)$-flow consisting of all maximal, connected chains in $X$ has meager orbits.
