Suppose M is a noncompact connected PL 2-manifold. In this paper we study the topological property of the triple (H(M)_0, H^PL(M)_0, H^PL, c(M)_0), where H(M)_0 is the identity component of the homeomorphism group {\cal H}(M) of M with the compact-open topology, and H^PL(M)_0 and H^PL, c(M)_0 are the identity components of the subgroups consisting of PL-homeomorphisms of M and ones with compact supports. We show that this triple is a (s^infty,sigma^infty,sigma^infty_f)-manifold and determine its topological type. We also study the subgroups of Lipschitz homeomorphisms.
In this paper we introduce a general notion of weak extension property for embeddings induced by a group actions. As an example, for the group H(M, m) of measure-preserving homeomorphisms of a noncompact manifold M, we deduce weak type extension theorems, and as an application we exhibit the local contractibility of the group H_c(M, m) of measure-preserving homeomorphisms with compact support of a noncompact connected manifold M endowed with the Whitney topology.
Suppose M is a noncompact connected 2-manifold and m is a good Radon measure of M with m(partial M) = 0. Let H(M)_0 denote the identity component of the group of homeomorphisms of M equipped with the compact-open topology and let H(M; m)_0 denote the identity component of the subgroup consisting of m-preserving homeomorphisms of M. We use results of A.Fathi and R.Berlanga to show that H(M; m)_0 is a strong deformation retract of H(M)_0 and classify the topological type of H(M; m)_0.
Suppose M is a noncompact connected PL 2-manifold and let H(M)_0 denote the identity component of the homeomorphism group of M with the compact-open topology. In this paper we classify the homotopy type of H(M)_0 by showing that {\cal H}(M)_0 has the homotopy type of the circle if M is the plane, an open or half open annulus, or the punctured projective plane. In all other cases we show that H(M)_0 is homotopically trivial.
We extend the proof of automatic continuity for homeomorphism groups of manifolds to non-compact manifolds and manifolds with marked points and their mapping class groups. Specifically, we show that, for any manifold $M$ homeomorphic to the interior of a compact manifold, and a set $X \subset M$ homeomorphic to the union of a Cantor set and finite set, the relative homeomorphism group $\mathrm{Homeo}(M, X)$ and the mapping class group $\mathrm{Homeo}(M, X)/\mathrm{Homeo}_0(M,X)$ have the property that any homomorphism from such a group to any separable topological group is necessarily continuo…
Suppose M is a noncompact connected n-manifold and m is a good Radon measure of M with m(bdry M) = 0. Let H(M; m) denote the group of m-preserving homeomorphisms of M equipped with the compact-open topology and H_E(M; m) denote the subgroup consisting of all h in H(M; m) which fix the ends of M. Each h in H_E(M; m) moves mass toward ends and this quantity is measured by a mass flow homomorphism J : H_E(M; m) -> V_m, where V_m is a topological vector space. We show that the map J has a continuous section. This induces the factorization H_E(M; m) cong Ker J times V_m and implies that Ker J is a …
In this paper we prove a new version of the Schoenflies extension theorem for collared domains in Euclidean n-space: for 1 < p < n, locally bi-Lipschitz homeomorphisms between collared domains with locally p-integrable, second-order weak derivatives admit homeomorphic extensions of the same regularity. Moreover, the theorem is essentially sharp. The existence of exotic 7-spheres shows that such extension theorems cannot hold for p > n = 7.
Relationships between a chaotic behavior and closely related properties of topological transitivity, sensitivity to initial conditions, density of closed orbits of homeomorphism groups and their countable products are investigated. We construct numerous new examples of chaotic groups of homeomorphisms of countable products of various metrizable topological spaces, including infinite-dimensional topological manifolds, whose factors can be as noncompact surfaces, so triangulable closed manifolds of an arbitrary dimension.

With a compact PL manifold X we associate a category T(X). The objects of T(X) are all combinatorial manifolds of type X, and morphisms are combinatorial assemblies. We prove that the homotopy equivalence BT (X) \approx BPL(X) holds, where PL(X) is the simplicial group of PL-homeomorphisms. Thus the space BT(X) is a canonical countable (as a CW-complex) model of BPL(X). As a result, we obtain functorial pure combinatorial models for PL fiber bundles with fiber X and a PL polyhedron B as the base. Such a model looks like a T(X)-coloring of some triangulation K of B. The vertices of K are colore…
A local deformation property for uniform embeddings in metric manifolds (LD) is formulated and its behaviour is studied in a formal view point. It is shown that any metric manifold with a geometric group action, typical metric spaces (Euclidean space, hyperbolic space and cylinders) and for κ\leq 0 the κ-cone ends over any compact Lipschitz metric manifolds, all of them have the property (LD). We also formulate a notion of end deformation property for uniform embeddings over proper product ends (ED). For example, the 0-cone end over a compact metric manifold has the property (ED) if it has the…
We show that there is no bi-Lipschitz homeomorphism of $\mathbb{R}^2$ that maps a spiral with a sub-exponential decay of winding radii to an unwinded arc. This result is sharp as shows an example of a logarithmic spiral.
We use the reflection group trick to glue manifolds with corners that are Borel-Serre compactifications of locally symmetric spaces of noncompact type and obtain aspherical manifolds. We call these \emph{piecewise locally symmetric} manifolds. This class of spaces provide new examples of aspherical manifolds whose fundamental groups have the structure of a complex of groups. These manifolds typically do not admit a locally $\CAT(0)$ metric. We prove that any self homotopy equivalence of such manifolds is homotopic to a homeomorphism. We compute the group of self homotopy equivalences of such a…
Let M be a PL 2-manifold and X be a compact subpolyhedron of M and let E(X, M) denote the space of embeddings of X into M with the compact-open topology. In this paper we study an extension property of embeddings of X into M and show that the restriction map from the homeomorphism group of M to E(X, M) is a principal bundle. As an application we show that if M is a Euclidean PL 2-manifold and dim X >= 1 then the triple (E(X,M), E^LIP(X,M), E^PL(X, M)) is an (s,Sigma,sigma)-manifold, where E_K^LIP(X,M) and E_K^PL(X, M) denote the subspaces of Lipschitz and PL embeddings.
In this paper, we classify completely hyperbolic 3-manifolds corresponding to geometric limits of Kleinian surface groups isomorphic to $π_1(S)$ for a finite-type hyperbolic surface $S$. In the first of the three main theorems, we construct bi-Lipschitz model manifolds for such hyperbolic 3-manifolds, which have a structure called brick decomposition and are embedded in $S \times (0,1)$. In the second theorem, we show that conversely, any such model manifold admitting a brick decomposition with reasonable conditions is bi-Lipschitz homeomorphic to a hyperbolic manifold corresponding to some ge…
We construct analytically the signature operator for a new family of topological manifolds. This family contains the quasi-conformal manifolds and the topological manifolds modeled on germs of homeomorphisms of R^n possessing a derivative which is in L^p, with p > n(n+1)/2. We obtain an unbounded Fredholm module which defines a class in the K-homology of the manifold, the Chern character of which is the Hirzebruch polynomial in the Pontrjagin classes of the manifold. This generalizes previous works of N. Teleman for Lipschitz manifolds and of A. Connes, N. Teleman and D. Sullivan for quasi-con…
