Let M be a PL 2-manifold and X be a compact subpolyhedron of M and let E(X, M) denote the space of embeddings of X into M with the compact-open topology. In this paper we study an extension property of embeddings of X into M and show that the restriction map from the homeomorphism group of M to E(X, M) is a principal bundle. As an application we show that if M is a Euclidean PL 2-manifold and dim X >= 1 then the triple (E(X,M), E^LIP(X,M), E^PL(X, M)) is an (s,Sigma,sigma)-manifold, where E_K^LIP(X,M) and E_K^PL(X, M) denote the subspaces of Lipschitz and PL embeddings.
In this article we establish the relation between the spines of 3-manifolds and the polyhedra with identified faces. We do this by showing that the spines of the closed, connected, orientable 3-manifolds can be presented through polyhedra with identified faces in a very natural way. We also prove the equivalence between the special spines and a certain type of polyhedra, and other related results.
We prove that an open 3-manifold proper homotopy equivalent to a geometrically simply connected polyhedron is simply connected at infinity, generalizing a theorem of V.Poenaru.
Two single parameter families of polyhedra $P(ψ)$ are constructed in three dimensional spaces of constant curvature $C(ψ)$. Identification of the faces of the polyhedra via isometries results in cone manifolds $M(ψ)$ which are topologically $S^1\timesS^2$, $S^3$ or singular $S^2$. The singular set of $M(ψ)$ can have self intersections for some values of $ψ$ and can also be the Whitehead link or form other configurations. Curvature varies continuously with $ψ$. At $ψ=0$ spontaneous surgery occurs and the topological type of $M(ψ)$ changes. This phenomenon is described.
Cannon, Swenson, and others have proved numerous theorems about subdivision rules associated to hyperbolic groups with a 2-sphere at infinity. However, few explicit examples are known. We construct an explicit subdivision rule for many 3-manifolds from polyhedral gluings. The manifolds that satisfy the conditions include all closed manifolds created from right-angled hyperbolic polyhedra, as well as many 3-manifolds with toral or hyperbolic boundary.
Let $S_{g,n}$ be a surface of genus $g > 1$ with $n>0$ punctures equipped with a complete hyperbolic cusp metric. Then it can be uniquely realized as the boundary metric of an ideal Fuchsian polyhedron. In the present paper we give a new variational proof of this result. We also give an alternative proof of the existence and uniqueness of a hyperbolic polyhedral metric with prescribed curvature in a given conformal class.
Let $(M, \dr M)$ be a 3-manifold with incompressible boundary that admits a convex co-compact hyperbolic metric. We consider the hyperbolic metrics on $M$ such that $\dr M$ looks locally like a hyperideal polyhedron, and we characterize the possible dihedral angles. We find as special cases the results of Bao and Bonahon on hyperideal polyhedra, and those of Rousset on fuchsian hyperideal polyhedra. Our results can also be stated in terms of circle configurations on $\dr M$, they provide an extension of the Koebe theorem on circle packings. The proof uses some elementary properties of the hype…
This article presents an improvement and extension of the heuristic first presented by Hougardy, Lutz, and Zelke in 2010 for realizing triangulated orientable surfaces with few vertices by a simplex-wise linear embedding. The improvement consists in the applicability to non-orientable surfaces (simplex-wise linear immersions) as well as symmetric realizations. With the help of our algorithm, numerous - often symmetric - realizations of non-orientable surfaces with the minimal number or few vertices have been obtained for the first time. These examples include the the Projective Plane with one …
Suppose M is a connected PL 2-manifold and X is a compact connected subpolyhedron of M (X \neq 1pt, a closed 2-manifold). Let E(X, M) denote the space of topological embeddings of X into M with the compact-open topology and let E(X, M)_0 denote the connected component of the inclusion i_X : X \subset M in E(X, M). In this paper we classify the homotopy type of E(X, M)_0 in term of the subgroup G = Im[{i_X}_\ast : π_1(X) \to π_1(M)]. We show that if G is not a cyclic group and M \neq T^2, T^2 then E(X, M)_0 \simeq \ast, if G is a nontrivial cyclic group and M \neq P^2, T^2, K^2 then E(X, M)_0 \…
Graph manifolds form important classes of $3$-dimensional closed and orientable manifolds. For example, {\it Seifert} manifolds are graph manifolds where hyperbolic manifolds are not. In applying singularity theory of differentiable maps to understanding global topologies of manifolds, graph manifolds have been shown to be characterized as ones admitting so-called simple fold maps into the plane of explicit classes by Saeki and the author. The present paper presents several related new results. Fold maps are higher dimensional variants of Morse functions and simple ones form simple classes, ge…
A compact polyhedron $X$ is said to have the Bounded Index Property for Homotopy Equivalence (BIPHE) if there is a finite bound $\mathcal{B}$ such that for any homotopy equivalence $f:X\rightarrow X$ and any fixed point class $\mathbf{F}$ of $f$, the index $|\mathrm{ind}(f,\mathbf{F})|\leq \mathcal{B}$. In this note, we consider the product of compact polyhedra, and give some sufficient conditions for it to have BIPHE. Moreover, we show that the products of closed Riemannian manifolds with negative sectional curvature, in particular hyperbolic manifolds, have BIPHE, which gives an affirmative …
The deformation theory of hyperbolic and Euclidean cone-manifolds with all cone angles less then 2π plays an important role in many problems in low dimensional topology and in the geometrization of 3-manifolds. Furthermore, various old conjectures dating back to Stoker about the moduli of convex hyperbolic and Euclidean polyhedra can be reduced to the study of deformations of cone-manifolds by doubling a polyhedron across its faces. This deformation theory has been understood by Hodgson and Kerckhoff when the singular set has no vertices, and by Weiß when the cone angles are less than π. We pr…
The aim of this paper is to extend the notion of pseudo harmonic morphism (introduced by Loubeau \cite {Lo}) to the case when the source manifold is an admissible Riemannian polyhedron. We define these maps to be harmonic in the sense of Eells-Fuglede \cite {EF} and pseudo-horizontally weakly conformal in our sense (see Section 3). We characterize them by means of germs of harmonic functions on the source polyhedron, in sense of Korevaar-Schoen \cite {KS}, and germs of holomorphic functions on the Kähler target manifold.
We show that a compact n-polyhedron PL embeds in a product of n trees if and only if it collapses onto an (n-1)-polyhedron. If the n-polyhedron is contractible and n\ne 3 (or n=3 and the Andrews-Curtis Conjecture holds), the product of trees may be assumed to collapse onto the image of the embedding. In contrast, there exists a 2-dimensional compact absolute retract X such that X\times I^k does not embed in any product of 2+k dendrites for each k.
Let $(M, \partial M)$ be a compact 3-manifold with boundary which admits a complete, convex co-compact hyperbolic metric. For each hyperbolic metric $g$ on $M$ such that $\dr M$ is smooth and strictly convex, the induced metric on $\dr M$ has curvature $K>-1$, and each such metric on $\dr M$ is obtained for a unique choice of $g$. A dual statement is that, for each $g$ as above, the third fundamental form of $\dr M$ has curvature $K<1$, and its closed geodesics which are contractible in $M$ have length $L>2π$. Conversely, any such metric on $\dr M$ is obtained for a unique choice of $g$. We ar…
We provide sufficient conditions assuring that a suitably decorated 2-polyhedron can be thickened to a compact 4-dimensional Stein domain. We also study a class of flat polyhedra in 4-manifolds and find conditions assuring that they admit Stein, compact neighborhoods. We base our calculations on Turaev's shadows suitably "smoothed"; the conditions we find are purely algebraic and combinatorial. Applying our results, we provide examples of hyperbolic 3-manifolds admitting "many" positive and negative Stein fillable contact structures, and prove a 4-dimensional analogue of Oertel's result on inc…
The space of shapes of a polyhedron with given total angles less than 2πat each of its n vertices has a Kaehler metric, locally isometric to complex hyperbolic space CH^{n-3}. The metric is not complete: collisions between vertices take place a finite distance from a nonsingular point. The metric completion is a complex hyperbolic cone-manifold. In some interesting special cases, the metric completion is an orbifold. The concrete description of these spaces of shapes gives information about the combinatorial classification of triangulations of the sphere with no more than 6 triangles at a vert…
In 1938, Tarski proved that a formula is not intuitionistically valid if, and only if, it has a counter-model in the Heyting algebra of open sets of some topological space. In fact, Tarski showed that any Euclidean space R^n with n >= 1 suffices, as does e.g. the Cantor space. In particular, intuitionistic logic cannot detect topological dimension in the frame of all open sets of a Euclidean space. By contrast, we consider the lattice of open subpolyhedra of a given compact polyhedron P \subseteq R^n, prove that it is a locally finite Heyting subalgebra of the (non-locally-finite) algebra of a…
We are generalizing to higher dimensions the Bavard-Ghys construction of the hyperbolic metric on the space of polygons with fixed directions of edges. The space of convex d-dimensional polyhedra with fixed directions of facet normals has a decomposition into type cones that correspond to different combinatorial types of polyhedra. This decomposition is a subfan of the secondary fan of a vector configuration and can be analyzed with the help of Gale diagrams. We construct a family of quadratic forms on each of the type cones using the theory of mixed volumes. The Alexandrov-Fenchel inequalitie…
In this paper we study existence and lack thereof of closed embedded orientable co-dimension one totally geodesic submanifolds of minimal volume cusped orientable hyperbolic manifolds.
We show that any closed oriented 3-manifold can be topologically embedded in some simply-connected closed symplectic 4-manifold, and that it can be made a smooth embedding after one stabilization. As a corollary of the proof we show that the homology cobordism group is generated by Stein fillable 3-manifolds. We also find obstructions on smooth embeddings: there exists 3-manifolds which cannot smoothly embed in a way that appropriately respect orientations in any symplectic manifold with weakly convex boundary. This embedding obstruction can also be used to detect exotic smooth structures on 4…
In this article we study proper symplectic and iso-symplectic embeddings of $4$--manifolds in $6$--manifolds. We show that a closed orientable smooth $4$--manifold admitting a Lefschetz fibration over $\C P^1$ admits a symplectic embedding in the symplectic manifold $(\C P^1 \times \C P^1 \times \C P^1, ω_{pr}),$ where $ω_{pr}$ is the product symplectic form on $\C P^1 \times \C P^1 \times \C P^1.$ We also show that there exists a sub-critical Weinstein $6$--manifold in which all finite type Weinstein $4$--manifolds admit iso-symplectic embeddings.
Let $N$ be a closed orientable connected $n$-manifold, $n\ge 4$. We classify embeddings of the punctured manifold $N_0$ into $\R^{2n-1}$ up to isotopy. Our result in some sense extends results of J.C. Becker -- H.H. Glover (1971) and O. Saeki (1999).
In this note we observe that one can contact embed all contact 3-manifolds into a Stein fillable contact structure on the twisted $S^3$-bundle over $S^2$ and also into a unique overtwisted contact structure on $S^3\times S^2$. These results are proven using "spun embeddings" and Lefschetz fibrations.
In this paper we study embeddings of contact manifolds using braidings of one manifold about another. In particular we show how to embed many contact 3-manifolds into the standard contact 5-sphere. We also show how to obstruct braidings of one manifold about another using contact geometry.
