Suppose M is a noncompact connected n-manifold and m is a good Radon measure of M with m(bdry M) = 0. Let H(M; m) denote the group of m-preserving homeomorphisms of M equipped with the compact-open topology and H_E(M; m) denote the subgroup consisting of all h in H(M; m) which fix the ends of M. Each h in H_E(M; m) moves mass toward ends and this quantity is measured by a mass flow homomorphism J : H_E(M; m) -> V_m, where V_m is a topological vector space. We show that the map J has a continuous section. This induces the factorization H_E(M; m) cong Ker J times V_m and implies that Ker J is a strong deformation retract of H_E(M; m).
In this paper we introduce a general notion of weak extension property for embeddings induced by a group actions. As an example, for the group H(M, m) of measure-preserving homeomorphisms of a noncompact manifold M, we deduce weak type extension theorems, and as an application we exhibit the local contractibility of the group H_c(M, m) of measure-preserving homeomorphisms with compact support of a noncompact connected manifold M endowed with the Whitney topology.
Suppose M is a noncompact connected 2-manifold and m is a good Radon measure of M with m(partial M) = 0. Let H(M)_0 denote the identity component of the group of homeomorphisms of M equipped with the compact-open topology and let H(M; m)_0 denote the identity component of the subgroup consisting of m-preserving homeomorphisms of M. We use results of A.Fathi and R.Berlanga to show that H(M; m)_0 is a strong deformation retract of H(M)_0 and classify the topological type of H(M; m)_0.
Suppose M is a noncompact connected PL 2-manifold and let H(M)_0 denote the identity component of the homeomorphism group of M with the compact-open topology. In this paper we classify the homotopy type of H(M)_0 by showing that {\cal H}(M)_0 has the homotopy type of the circle if M is the plane, an open or half open annulus, or the punctured projective plane. In all other cases we show that H(M)_0 is homotopically trivial.
Suppose M is a noncompact connected PL 2-manifold. In this paper we study the topological property of the triple (H(M)_0, H^PL(M)_0, H^PL, c(M)_0), where H(M)_0 is the identity component of the homeomorphism group {\cal H}(M) of M with the compact-open topology, and H^PL(M)_0 and H^PL, c(M)_0 are the identity components of the subgroups consisting of PL-homeomorphisms of M and ones with compact supports. We show that this triple is a (s^infty,sigma^infty,sigma^infty_f)-manifold and determine its topological type. We also study the subgroups of Lipschitz homeomorphisms.
We extend the proof of automatic continuity for homeomorphism groups of manifolds to non-compact manifolds and manifolds with marked points and their mapping class groups. Specifically, we show that, for any manifold $M$ homeomorphic to the interior of a compact manifold, and a set $X \subset M$ homeomorphic to the union of a Cantor set and finite set, the relative homeomorphism group $\mathrm{Homeo}(M, X)$ and the mapping class group $\mathrm{Homeo}(M, X)/\mathrm{Homeo}_0(M,X)$ have the property that any homomorphism from such a group to any separable topological group is necessarily continuo…
Relationships between a chaotic behavior and closely related properties of topological transitivity, sensitivity to initial conditions, density of closed orbits of homeomorphism groups and their countable products are investigated. We construct numerous new examples of chaotic groups of homeomorphisms of countable products of various metrizable topological spaces, including infinite-dimensional topological manifolds, whose factors can be as noncompact surfaces, so triangulable closed manifolds of an arbitrary dimension.
We give a simple construction of new, complete, finite volume manifolds $M$ of bounded, nonpositive curvature. These manifolds have ends that look like a mixture of locally symmetric ends of different ranks and their fundamental groups are not duality groups.
We construct uncountably many simply connected open 3-manifolds with genus one ends homeomorphic to the Cantor set. Each constructed manifold has the property that any self homeomorphism of the manifold (which necessarily extends to a homeomorphism of the ends) fixes the ends pointwise. These manifolds are complements of rigid generalized Bing-Whitehead (BW) Cantor sets. Previous examples of rigid Cantor sets with simply connected complement in $R^{3}$ had infinite genus and it was an open question as to whether finite genus examples existed. The examples here exhibit the minimum possible genu…
Suppose M is a noncompact connected oriented C^infty n-manifold and omega is a positive volume form on M. Let D^+(M) denote the group of orientation preserving diffeomorphisms of M endowed with the compact-open C^infty topology and D(M; omega) denote the subgroup of omega-preserving diffeomorphisms of M. In this paper we propose a unified approach for realization of mass transfer toward ends by diffeomorphisms of M. This argument together with Moser's theorem enables us to deduce two selection theorems for the groups D^+(M) and D(M; omega). The first one is the extension of Moser's theorem to …
A local deformation property for uniform embeddings in metric manifolds (LD) is formulated and its behaviour is studied in a formal view point. It is shown that any metric manifold with a geometric group action, typical metric spaces (Euclidean space, hyperbolic space and cylinders) and for κ\leq 0 the κ-cone ends over any compact Lipschitz metric manifolds, all of them have the property (LD). We also formulate a notion of end deformation property for uniform embeddings over proper product ends (ED). For example, the 0-cone end over a compact metric manifold has the property (ED) if it has the…
For every finitely generated abelian group G, we construct an irreducible open 3-manifold $M_{G}$ whose end set is homeomorphic to a Cantor set and with end homogeneity group of $M_{G}$ isomorphic to G. The end homogeneity group is the group of self-homeomorphisms of the end set that extend to homeomorphisms of the 3-manifold. The techniques involve computing the embedding homogeneity groups of carefully constructed Antoine type Cantor sets made up of rigid pieces. In addition, a generalization of an Antoine Cantor set using infinite chains is needed to construct an example with integer homoge…
This survey/expository article covers a variety of topics related to the "topology at infinity" of noncompact manifolds and complexes. In manifold topology and geometric group theory, the most important noncompact spaces are often contractible, so distinguishing one from another requires techniques beyond the standard tools of algebraic topology. One approach uses end invariants, such as the number of ends or the fundamental group at infinity; another approach seeks nice compactifications, then analyzes the boundaries. A thread connecting the two is shape theory. In these notes we provide a ca…
We construct infinitely many examples of finite volume 4-manifolds with $T^3$ ends that do not admit any cusped asymptotically hyperbolic Einstein metrics yet satisfy a strict logarithmic version of the Hitchin-Thorpe inequality due to Dai-Wei. This is done by using estimates from Seiberg-Witten theory due to LeBrun as well as a method for constructing solutions to the Seiberg-Witten equations on noncompact manifolds due to Biquard. We also use constructions coming from the $Pin^-(2)$ monopole equations to obtain a larger class of manifolds where these techniques apply.
This paper accomplishes two things. First, we construct a geometric analog of the rational Tits building for general noncompact, complete, finite volume $n$-manifolds $M$ of bounded nonpositive curvature. Second, we prove that this analog has dimension less than $\lfloor n/2\rfloor$.
We obtain restrictions on the topology of a closed connected manifold B that bounds a (possibly noncompact) manifold whose interior V admits a complete Riemannian metric of nonpositive sectional curvature. If G denotes the fundamental group of B, then a sample result is that B must be aspherical and incompressible if one of the following is true: (1) V has finite volume and G is virtually nilpotent, (2) G is virtually nilpotent and has no proper torsion-free quotients, (3) G is isomorphic to a uniform, irreducible lattice of real rank > 1.
We continue our study of ends of non-compact manifolds, with a focus on the inward tameness condition. For manifolds with compact boundary, inward tameness, has significant implications. For example, such manifolds have stable homology at infinity in all dimensions. We show that these manifolds have 'almost perfectly semistable' fundamental group at each end. That observation leads to further analysis of group theoretic conditions at infinity, and to the notion of a 'near pseudo-collar' structure. We obtain a complete characterization of n-manifolds (n>5) admitting such a structure, thereby ge…
Real projective structures on $n$-orbifolds are useful in understanding the space of representations of discrete groups into $\mathrm{SL}(n+1, \mathbb{R})$ or $\mathrm{PGL}(n+1, \mathbb{R})$. A recent work shows that many hyperbolic manifolds deform to manifolds with such structures not projectively equivalent to the original ones. The purpose of this paper is to understand the structures of properly convex ends of real projective $n$-dimensional orbifolds. In particular, these have the radial or totally geodesic ends. For this, we will study the natural conditions on eigenvalues of holonomy r…

With a compact PL manifold X we associate a category T(X). The objects of T(X) are all combinatorial manifolds of type X, and morphisms are combinatorial assemblies. We prove that the homotopy equivalence BT (X) \approx BPL(X) holds, where PL(X) is the simplicial group of PL-homeomorphisms. Thus the space BT(X) is a canonical countable (as a CW-complex) model of BPL(X). As a result, we obtain functorial pure combinatorial models for PL fiber bundles with fiber X and a PL polyhedron B as the base. Such a model looks like a T(X)-coloring of some triangulation K of B. The vertices of K are colore…
A key tool in our earlier work on ends of manifolds high-dimensional manifolds was an ability to embed cobordisms provided by the Quillen Plus Construction into those ends. Here we develop a `spherical modification' trick which provides a constructive approach to obtaining such embeddings. More importantly, this approach allows for more general embedding results. In this paper we develop generalizations of the plus construction and show how the corresponding cobordisms can be embedded in manifolds satisfying appropriate fundamental group properties. Results obtained here play an important role…
