Fixed point free homeomorphisms of the complex plane

Our purpose in this article is to prove that the group $H({\bf C})$ of homeomorphisms of the complex plane ${\bf C}$ is a metric group equipped with the metric induced by uniform convergence of homeomorphisms and their inverses on compacts and the set $$\left\{ h \in H({\bf C}) : ( \forall z \in {\bf C} )( h(z) \neq z ) \right\} $$ of fixed point free homeomorphisms of the complex plane is a conjugacy invariant dense $G_{δ}$ subset of $H({\bf C})$.

The complexity of homeomorphism relations on some classes of compacta with bounded topological dimension

We are dealing with the complexity of the homeomorphism equivalence relation on some classes of metrizable compacta from the viewpoint of invariant descriptive set theory. We prove that the homeomorphism equivalence relation of absolute retracts in the plane is Borel bireducible with the isomorphism equivalence relation of countable graphs. A notion of graph homeomorphism

We introduce a notion of graph homeomorphisms which uses the concept of dimension and homotopy for graphs. It preserves the dimension of a subbasis, cohomology and Euler characteristic. Connectivity and homotopy look as in classical topology. The Brouwer-Lefshetz fixed point leads to the following discretiszation of the Kakutani fixed point theorem: any graph homeomorphism T with nonzero Lefschetz number has a nontrivial invariant open set which is fixed by T.

Homotopy types of homeomorphism groups of noncompact 2-manifolds

Suppose M is a noncompact connected PL 2-manifold and let H(M)_0 denote the identity component of the homeomorphism group of M with the compact-open topology. In this paper we classify the homotopy type of H(M)_0 by showing that {\cal H}(M)_0 has the homotopy type of the circle if M is the plane, an open or half open annulus, or the punctured projective plane. In all other cases we show that H(M)_0 is homotopically trivial.

More on Tie-points and homeomorphism in N^*

A point x is a (bow) tie-point of a space X if X setminus {x} can be partitioned into (relatively) clopen sets each with x in its closure. Tie-points have appeared in the construction of non-trivial autohomeomorphisms of betaN setminus N= N^* and in the recent study of (precisely) 2-to-1 maps on N^*. In these cases the tie-points have been the unique fixed point of an involution on N^*. One application of the results in this paper is the consistency of there being a 2-to-1 continuous image of N^* which is not a homeomorph of N^* .

Fixed-point index, the Incompatibility Theorem, and torus parametrization

The fixed-point index of a homeomorphism of Jordan curves measures the number of fixed-points, with multiplicity, of the extension of the homeomorphism to the full Jordan domains in question. The now-classical Circle Index Lemma says that the fixed-point index of a positive-orientation-preserving homeomorphism of round circles is always non-negative. Given uniformly homeomorphic metric spaces $X$ and $Y$, it is proved that the hyperspaces $C(X)$ and $C(Y)$ are uniformly homeomorphic, where $C(X)$ denotes the collection of all nonempty closed subsets of $X$, and is endowed with Hausdorff distance.
