An overview of some recent results on the geometry of partial differential equations in application to integrable systems is given. Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formalism both in the free case (on the space of infinite jets) and with constraints (on a PDE) are discussed. Analogs of tangent and cotangent bundles to a differential equation are introduced and the variational Schouten bracket is defined. General theoretical constructions are illustrated by a series of examples.
We prove that the cosine law for spherical triangles and spherical tetrahedra defines integrable systems, both in the sense of multidimensional consistency and in the sense of dynamical systems.
We introduce a novel systematic construction for integrable (3+1)-dimensional dispersionless systems using nonisospectral Lax pairs that involve contact vector fields. In particular, we present new large classes of (3+1)-dimensional integrable dispersionless systems associated to the Lax pairs which are polynomial and rational in the spectral parameter.
In this paper, we study the formal solution space of a nonlinear PDE in a fiber bundle. To this end, we start with foundational material and introduce the notion of a pfd structure to build up a new concept of profinite dimensional manifolds. We show that the infinite jet space of the fiber bundle is a profinite dimensional manifold in a natural way. The formal solution space of the nonlinear PDE then is a subspace of this jet space, and inherits from it the structure of a profinite dimensional manifold, if the PDE is formally integrable. We apply our concept to scalar PDEs and prove a new cri…
For several classes of second order dispersionless PDEs, we show that the symbols of their formal linearizations define conformal structures which must be Einstein-Weyl in 3D (or self-dual in 4D) if and only if the PDE is integrable by the method of hydrodynamic reductions. This demonstrates that the integrability of these dispersionless PDEs can be seen from the geometry of their formal linearizations.
We introduce a general setting for multidimensional dispersionless integrable hierarchy in terms of differential $m$-form $Ω_m$ with the coefficients satisfying the Plücker relations, which is gauge-invariantly closed and its gauge-invariant coordinates (ratios of coefficients) are (locally) holomorphic with respect to one of the variables (the spectral variable). We demonstrate that this form defines a hierarchy of dispersionless integrable equations in terms of commuting vector fields locally holomorphic in the spectral variable. The equations of the hierarchy are given by the gauge-invarian…
We construct a new series of multicomponent integrable PDE systems that contain as particular example (with appropriately chosen parameters) many famous integrable systems including KdV, coupled KdV, Harry Dym, coupled Harry Dym, Camassa-Holm, multicomponent Camassa-Holm, Kaup-Boussinesq systems. The series contains also integrable systems with no low-component analogues.
We describe the gauge-theoretic approach to transformations in integrable geometry through discussion of two classical examples: surfaces of constant negative Gauss curvature and isothermic surfaces. These are purely expository notes written to accompany some lectures I gave in Fukuoka in May 2015.
This article is a local analysis of integrable GL(2)-structures of degree 4. A GL(2)-structure of degree n corresponds to a distribution of rational normal cones over a manifold M of dimension (n+1). Integrability corresponds to the existence of many submanifolds that are spanned by lines in the cones. These GL(2)-structures are important because they naturally arise from a certain family of second-order hyperbolic PDEs in three variables that are integrable via hydrodynamic reduction. Familiar examples include the wave equation, the first flow of the dKP equation, and the Boyer--Finley equati…
A novel class of integrable surfaces is recorded. This class of O surfaces is shown to include and generalize classical surfaces such as isothermic, constant mean curvature, minimal, `linear' Weingarten, Guichard and Petot surfaces and surfaces of constant Gaussian curvature. It is demonstrated that the construction of a Backlund transformation for O surfaces leads in a natural manner to an associated parameter-dependent linear representation. The classical pseudosphere and breather pseudospherical surfaces are generated.
This is an expanded version of the lecture notes for a minicourse that I gave at a summer school called "Advanced Course on Geometry and Dynamics of Integrable Systems" at CRM Barcelona, 9--14/September/2013. In this text we study the following aspects of integrable non-Hamiltonian systems: local and semi-local normal forms and associated torus actions for integrable systems, and the geometry of integrable systems of type $(n,0)$. Most of the results presented in this text are very recent, and some theorems in this text are even original in the sense that they have not been written down explic…
In this paper we show that if one writes down the structure equations for the evolution of a curve embedded in an (n)-dimensional Riemannian manifold with constant curvature this leads to a symplectic, a Hamiltonian and an hereditary operator. This gives us a natural connection between finite dimensional geometry, infinite dimensional geometry and integrable systems. Moreover one finds a Lax pair in (\orth{n+1}) with the vector modified Korteweg-De Vries equation (vmKDV) \[ \vk{t}= \vk{xxx}+\fr32 ||\vk{}||^2 \vk{x} \] as integrability condition. We indicate that other integrable vector evoluti…
We present the first steps of a procedure which discretises surface theory in classical projective differential geometry in such a manner that underlying integrable structure is preserved. We propose a canonical frame in terms of which the associated projective Gauss-Weingarten and Gauss-Mainardi-Codazzi equations adopt compact forms. Based on a scaling symmetry which injects a parameter into the linear Gauss-Weingarten equations, we set down an algebraic classification scheme of discrete projective minimal surfaces which turns out to admit a geometric counterpart formulated in terms of discre…
In this paper, we consider a class of plane curves called log-aesthetic curves and their generalization which are used in computer aided geometric design. We consider these curves in the framework of the similarity geometry and characterize them as invariant curves under the integrable flow on plane curves which is governed by the Burgers equation. We propose a variational principle for these curves, leading to the stationary Burgers equation as the Euler-Lagrange equation. As an application of the formulation developed here, we propose a discretization of these curves and the associated varia…
A tensorial approach to the theory of classical Hamiltonian integrable systems is proposed, based on the geometry of Haantjes tensors. We introduce the class of symplectic-Haantjes manifolds (or $ω\mathscr{H}$ manifolds), as a natural setting where the notion of integrability can be formulated. We prove that the existence of suitable Haantjes algebras of (1,1) tensor fields with vanishing Haantjes torsion is a necessary and sufficient condition for a Hamiltonian system to be integrable in the Liouville-Arnold sense. We also show that new integrable models arise from the Haantjes geometry. Fina…
Some of the most important classes of surfaces in projective 3-space are reviewed: these are isothermally asymptotic surfaces, projectively applicable surfaces, surfaces of Jonas, projectively minimal surfaces, etc. It is demonstrated that the corresponding projective "Gauss-Codazzi" equations reduce to integrable systems which are quite familiar from the modern soliton theory and coincide with the stationary flows in the Davey-Stewartson and Kadomtsev-Petviashvili hierarchies, equations of the Toda lattice, etc. The corresponding Lax pairs can be obtained by inserting a spectral parameter in …
The aim of this paper is to develop on the 1-jet space J^1(R, M^n) the Finsler-like geometry (in the sense of distinguished (d-) connection, d-torsions, d-curvatures and some gravitational-like and electromagnetic-like geometrical models) attached to the (t,x)-conformal deformation of the Berwald-Moor metric.
We use the consistency approach to classify discrete integrable 3D equations of the octahedron type. They are naturally treated on the root lattice $Q(A_3)$ and are consistent on the multidimensional lattice $Q(A_N)$. Our list includes the most prominent representatives of this class, the discrete KP equation and its Schwarzian (multi-ratio) version, as well as three further equations. The combinatorics and geometry of the octahedron type equations are explained. In particular, the consistency on the 4-dimensional Delaunay cells has its origin in the classical Desargues theorem of projective g…
For each of the simple Lie algebras $\mathfrak{g}=A_l$, $D_l$ or $E_6$, we show that the all-genera one-point FJRW invariants of $\mathfrak{g}$-type, after multiplication by suitable products of Pochhammer symbols, are the coefficients of an algebraic generating function and hence are integral. Moreover, we find that the all-genera invariants themselves coincide with the coefficients of the unique calibration of the Frobenius manifold of $\mathfrak{g}$-type evaluated at a special point. For the $A_4$ (5-spin) case we also find two other normalizations of the sequence that are again integral an…
We give an account of the classical and integrable geometry of isothermic surfaces in arbitrary co-dimension. We show that the classical transformation theory of Darboux, Bianchi and Calapso goes through unchanged in arbitrary co-dimension as does the connection with the "curved flats" of Ferus and Pedit. Moreover, we identify Darboux transformations with the dressing action of "simple factors" in the sense of Terng and Uhlenbeck. In so doing, we advertise the use of Vahlen's Clifford algebra matrices as an efficient computational tool in conformal geometry.
This work has its origins in an attempt to describe systematically the integrable geometries and gauge theories in dimensions one to four related to twistor theory. In each such dimension, there is a nondegenerate integrable geometric structure, governed by a nonlinear integrable differential equation, and each solution of this equation determines a background geometry on which, for any Lie group $G$, an integrable gauge theory is defined. In four dimensions, the geometry is selfdual conformal geometry and the gauge theory is selfdual Yang-Mills theory, while the lower-dimensional structures a…

We give an abstract formulation of the formal theory partial differential equations (PDEs) in synthetic differential geometry, one that would seamlessly generalize the traditional theory to a range of enhanced contexts, such as super-geometry, higher (stacky) differential geometry, or even a combination of both. A motivation for such a level of generality is the eventual goal of solving the open problem of covariant geometric pre-quantization of locally variational field theories, which may include fermions and (higher) gauge fields. (abridged)
We compute the scalar curvature of 7-dimensional ${G}_2$-manifolds admitting a connection with totally skew-symmetric torsion. We prove the formula for the general solution of the Killing spinor equation and express the Riemannian scalar curvature of the solution in terms of the dilation function and the NS 3-form field. In dimension n=7 the dilation function involved in the second fermionic string equation has an interpretation as a conformal change of the underlying integrable ${G}_2$-structure into a cocalibrated one of pure type $W_3$.
Nondegeneracy conditions need to be imposed in K.A.M. theorems to insure that the set of diophantine tori has a large measure. Although they are usually expressed in action coordinates, it is possible to give a geometrical formulation using the notion of regular completely integrable systems defined by a fibration of a symplectic manifold by lagrangian tori together with a Hamiltonian function constant on the fibers. In this paper, we give a geometrical definition of different nondegeneracy conditions, we show the implication relations that exist between them, and we show the uniqueness of the…
We define a jet-space analog of the BV-Laplacian, avoiding delta-functions and infinite constants; instead we show that the main properties of the BV-Laplacian and its relation to the Schouten bracket originate from the underlying jet-space geometry.
Jet isomorphism theorems for conformal geometry are discussed. A new proof of the jet isomorphism theorem for odd-dimensional conformal geometry is outlined, using an ambient realization of the conformal deformation complex. An infinite order ambient lift for conformal densities in the case in which harmonic extension is obstructed is described. A jet isomorphism theorem for even dimensional conformal geometry is formulated using the inhomogeneous ambient metrics recently introduced by the author and K. Hirachi.
The aim of this paper is to develop on the 1-jet space J^1(R,M^4) the jet Generalized Lagrange Geometry for the rheonomic Chernov metric. The associated gravitational and electromagnetic field models based on the rheonomic Finsler Chernov metric tensor are developed and discussed.
The integrability of multivector fields in a differentiable manifold is studied. Then, given a jet bundle $J^1E\to E\to M$, it is shown that integrable multivector fields in $E$ are equivalent to integrable connections in the bundle $E\to M$ (that is, integrable jet fields in $J^1E$). This result is applied to the particular case of multivector fields in the manifold $J^1E$ and connections in the bundle $J^1E\to M$ (that is, jet fields in the repeated jet bundle $J^1J^1E$), in order to characterize integrable multivector fields and connections whose integral manifolds are canonical lifting of …
In this article, we treat G_2-geometry as a special case of multisymplectic geometry and make a number of remarks regarding Hamiltonian multivector fields and Hamiltonian differential forms on manifolds with an integrable G_2-structure; in particular, we discuss existence and make a number of identifications of the spaces of Hamiltonian structures associated to the two multisymplectic structures associated to an integrable G_2-structure. Along the way, we prove some results in multisymplectic geometry that are generalizations of results from symplectic geometry.
The aim of this paper is to construct a natural Riemann-Lagrange differential geometry on 1-jet spaces, in the sense of nonlinear connections, generalized Cartan connections, d-torsions, d-curvatures, jet electromagnetic fields and jet electromagnetic Yang-Mills energies, starting from some given nonlinear evolution ODEs systems modelling biologic phenomena like the cancer cell population model or the infection by human immunodeficiency virus-type 1 (HIV-1) model.
The aim of this paper is to obtain on the dual 1-jet space J^{1*}(R;M) the main geometrical objects used in the dual jet geometry of time-dependent Hamiltonians. We talk about distinguished (d-) tensors, time-dependent semisprays, nonlinear connections and their mathematical connections.
The L-equivalent counterpart of the M-LXIX equation is found. This L-equivalent equation is the Gauss-Codazzi equation which is integrable by the dressing method. This means that the M-LXIX equation is also integrable in this sense.
In this paper we classify Weingarten surfaces integrable in the sense of soliton theory. The criterion is that the associated Gauss equation possesses an sl(2)-valued zero curvature representation with a nonremovable parameter. Under certain restrictions on the jet order, the answer is given by a third order ordinary differential equation to govern the functional dependence of the principal curvatures. Employing the scaling and translation (offsetting) symmetry, we give a general solution of the governing equation in terms of elliptic integrals. We show that the instances when the elliptic int…
The paper develops the Finsler-like geometry on the 1-jet space for the jet conformal Minkowski (JCM) metric, which naturally extends the Minkowski metric in the Chernov-Pavlov framework. To this aim there are determined the nonlinear connection, distinguished (d-) Cartan linear connection, d-torsions and d-curvatures. The field geometrical gravitational and electromagnetic d-models based on the JCM metric are discussed.
Using a combination of techniques from conformal and complex geometry, we show the potentialization of 4-dimensional closed Einstein-Weyl structures which are half-algebraically special and admit a "half-integrable" almost-complex structure. That is, we reduce the Einstein-Weyl equations to a single, conformally invariant, non-linear scalar equation, that we call the "conformal HH equation", and we reconstruct the conformal structure (curvature and metric) from a solution to this equation. We show that the conformal metric is composed of: a conformally flat part, a conformally half-flat part r…
The aim of this paper is to construct a natural Riemann-Lagrange differential geometry on 1-jet spaces, in the sense of nonlinear connections, generalized Cartan connections, d-torsions, d-curvatures, jet electromagnetic fields and jet Yang-Mills energies, starting from some given non-linear evolution DEs systems modelling economic phenomena, like the Kaldor model of the bussines cycle or the Tobin-Benhabib-Miyao model regarding the role of money on economic growth.
The aim of this paper is to develop on the 1-jet space J^1(R,M^3) the Finsler-like geometry (in the sense of distinguished (d-) connection, d-torsions and d-curvatures) of the rheonomic Berwald-Moor metric of order three. Some natural geometrical field theories (gravitational and electromagnetic) produced by the preceding rheonomic Berwald-Moor metric of order three are also exposed.
We investigate the rudiments of Riemannian geometry on orbit spaces $M/G$ for isometric proper actions of Lie groups on Riemannian manifolds. Minimal geodesic arcs are length minimising curves in the metric space $M/G$ and they can hit strata which are more singular only at the end points. This is phrased as convexity result. The geodesic spray, viewed as a (strata-preserving) vector field on $TM/G$, leads to the notion of geodesics in $M/G$ which are projections under $M\to M/G$ of geodesics which are normal to the orbits. It also leads to `ballistic curves' which are projections of the other…
We study the Hitchin component in the space of representations of the fundamental group of a Riemann surface into a split real simple Lie group in the rank 2 case. We prove that such representations are described by a conformal structure and class of Higgs bundle we call cyclic and we show cyclic Higgs bundles correspond to a form of the affine Toda equations. In each case we relate cyclic Higgs bundles to geometric structures on the surface. We elucidate the geometry of generic 2-plane distributions in 5 dimensions, relating it to a parabolic geometry associated to the split real form of $G_2…
We consider a regular distribution $\mathcal{D}$ in a Riemannian manifold $(M,g)$. The Levi-Civita connection on $(M,g)$ together with the orthogonal projection allow to endow the space of sections of $\mathcal{D}$ with a natural covariant derivative, the intrinsic connection. Hence we have two different covariant derivatives for sections of $\mathcal{D}$, one directly with the connection in $(M,g)$ and the other one with this intrinsic connection. Their difference is the second fundamental form of $\mathcal{D}$ and we prove it is a significant tool to characterize the involutive and the total…
We propose the time-dependent generalization of an `ordinary' autonomous human biomechanics, in which total mechanical + biochemical energy is not conserved. We introduce a general framework for time-dependent biomechanics in terms of jet manifolds derived from the extended musculo-skeletal configuration manifold. The corresponding Riemannian geometrical evolution follows the Ricci flow diffusion. In particular, we show that the exponential-like decay of total biomechanical energy (due to exhaustion of biochemical resources) is closely related to the Ricci flow on the biomechanical configurati…
In our [Higher-order preconnections in synthetic differential geometry of jet bundles, Beiträge zur Algebra und Geometrie, 45 (2004), 677-696] we have established the affine bundle theorem in the synthetic approach to jet bundles in terms of infinitesimal spaces Dⁿ's. In our succeeding [Synthetic differential geometry of higher-order total differentials, to appear in Cahiers de Topologie et Géométrie Différentielle Catégoriques] we have introduced another synthetic approach to jet bundles in terms of infinitesimal spaces D_{n}'s, and have compared it with the former approach both in the …
Recent work Bobienski-Nurowski on 5-dimensional Riemannian manifolds with an SO(3) structure prompts us to investigate which Lie groups admit such a geometry. The case in which the SO(3) structure admits a compatible connection with torsion is considered. This leads to a classification under special behaviour of the onnection, which enables to recover all known examples, plus others bearing torsion of pure type. Suggestive relations with special structures in other dimensions are highlighted, with attention to eight-dimensional SU(3) geometry.
This paper is the sequel to our previous paper (Differetial Geometry of Microlinear Frolicher spaces IV-1), where three approaches to jet bundles are presented and compared. The first objective in this paper is to give the affine bundle theorem for the second and third approaches to jet bundles. The second objective is to deal with the three approaches to jet bundles in the context where coordinates are available. In this context all the three approaches are shown to be equivalent.
By a real alphabeta-geometry we mean a four-dimensional manifold M equipped with a neutral metric h such that (M,h) admits both an integrable distribution of alpha-planes and an integrable distribution of beta-planes. We obtain a local characterization of the metric when at least one of the distributions is parallel (i.e., is a Walker geometry) and the three-dimensional distribution spanned by the alpha- and beta-distributions is integrable. The case when both distributions are parallel, which has been called two-sided Walker geometry, is obtained as a special case. We also consider real αβ-ge…
First-order jet bundles can be put at the foundations of the modern geometric approach to nonlinear PDEs, since higher-order jet bundles can be seen as constrained iterated jet bundles. The definition of first-order jet bundles can be given in many equivalent ways - for instance, by means of Grassmann bundles. In this paper we generalize it by means of flag bundles, and develop the corresponding theory for higher-oder and infinite-order jet bundles. We show that this is a natural geometric framework for the space of Cauchy data for nonlinear PDEs. As an example, we derive a general notion of t…
Remarkable parallelism between the theory of integrable systems of first-order quasilinear PDE and some old results in projective and affine differential geometry of conjugate nets, Laplace equations, their Bianchi-Baecklund transformations is exposed. These results were recently applied by I.M.Krichever and B.A.Dubrovin to prove integrability of some models in topological field theories. Within the geometric framework we derive some new integrable (in a sense to be discussed) generalizations describing N-wave resonant interactions.
In the present paper, we show that the geometry of a screen integrable null hypersurface can be generated from an isometric immersion of a leaf of its screen distribution into the ambient space. We prove, under certain geometric conditions, that such immersions are contained in semi-Euclidean spheres or hyperbolic spaces, and the underlying null hypersurfaces are necessarily umbilic and screen totally umbilic. Where necessary, examples have been given to illustrate the main ideas.
