In this note we characterize the (resp., weak) Gorenstein global dimension for an arbitrary ring. Also, we extend the well-known Hilbert's syzygy Theorem to the weak Gorenstein global dimension and we study the weak Gorenstein homological dimensions of direct product of rings, which gives examples of non-coherent rings of finite Gorenstein dimensions $>0$ and infinite classical weak dimension.
Unlike the Gorenstein projective and injective dimensions, the majority of results on the Gorenstein flat dimension have been established only over Noetherian (or coherent) rings. Naturally, one would like to generalize these results to any associative ring. In this direction, we show that the Gorenstein flat dimension is a refinement of the classical flat dimension over any ring; and we investigate the relations between the Gorenstein projective dimension and the Gorenstein flat dimension.
In this paper, after giving a criterion for a Noetherian local ring to be quasi-Gorenstein, we obtain some sufficient conditions for a quasi- Gorenstein ring to be Gorenstein. In the course, we provide a slight generalization of a theorem of Evans and Griffith.
Let $k$ be an arbitrary field. In this note, we show that if a sequence of relatively prime positive integers ${\bf a}=(a_1,a_2,a_3,a_4)$ defines a Gorenstein non complete intersection monomial curve ${\mathcal C}({\bf a})$ in ${\mathbb A}_k^4$, then there exist two vectors ${\bf u}$ and ${\bf v}$ such that ${\mathcal C}({\bf a}+t{\bf u})$ and ${\mathcal C}({\bf a}+t{\bf v})$ are also Gorenstein non complete intersection affine monomial curves for almost all $t\geq 0$.
We deal with the complete-intersection property of maximally differential ideals. Also, we connect the Gorenstein homology of derivations to the Gorenstein property of the base rings. These equipped with some applications.
Koszulness of Gorenstein quadratic algebras of small socle degree is studied. In this note, we construct non-Koszul Gorenstein quadratic toric ring such that its socle degree is more than 3 by using stable set polytopes.
In this note, we study commutative Noetherian local rings having finitely generated modules of finite Gorenstein injective dimension. In particular, we consider whether such rings are Cohen-Macaulay.
The so-called 'change-of-ring' results are well-known expressions which present several connections between projective, injective and flat dimensions over the various base rings. In this note we extend these results to the Gorenstein dimensions over Cohen-Macaulay local rings.
We compute the Gorenstein weak dimension of a coherent power series rings over a commutative rings and we show that, in general, $\gwd(R) \leq 1$ does not imply that $R$ is an arithmetical ring.
We give an alternate proof for a theorem of Migliore and Nagel. In particular, we show that if $\mathcal H$ is an SI-sequence, then the collection of Betti diagrams for all Artinian Gorenstein $k$-algebras with the weak Lefschetz property and Hilbert function $\mathcal H$ has a unique largest element.
In this note, we calculate the Koszul homology of the codimension 3 Gorenstein ideals. We find filtrations for the Koszul homology in terms of modules with pure free resolutions and completely describe these resolutions. We also consider the Huneke-Ulrich deviation 2 ideals.
Let $(R,\frak m, k)$ be a noetherian local ring. It is well-known that $R$ is regular if and only if the injective dimension of $k$ is finite. In this paper it is shown that $R$ is Gorenstein if and only if the Gorenstein injective dimension of $k$ is finite. On the other hand a generalized version of the so-called Bass formula is proved for finitely generated modules of finite Gorenstein injective dimension. It also improves Christensen's generalized Bass formula (cf. "Gorenstein dimensions", volume 1747 of Lecture Notes in Mathematics, Springer-Verlag, Berlin, 2000).
We study the weak Lefschetz property of a class of graded Artinian Gorenstein algebras of codimension three associated in a natural way to the Apéry set of a numerical semigroup generated by four natural numbers. We show that these algebras have the weak Lefschetz property whenever the initial degree of their defining ideal is small.
In this note we supply an elementary proof of the following well-known theorem of R. Stanley: the $h$-vectors of Gorenstein algebras of codimension 3 are SI-sequences, i.e. are symmetric and the first difference of their first half is an $O$-sequence.
In this paper we study the Weak Lefschetz property of two classes of standard graded Artinian Gorenstein algebras associated in a natural way to the Apéry set of numerical semigroups. To this aim we also prove a general result about the transfer of Weak Lefschetz property from an Artinian Gorenstein algebra to its quotients modulo a colon ideal.
In this note we study trace ideals of canonical modules. Characterizations of the trace ideals in terms of annihilators of certain Ext modules are given. We apply our results to study many classes of rings close to being Gorenstein that appear in recent literature. We discuss the behavior of nearly Gorensteinness, introduced by Herzog-Hibi-Stamate, under reductions by regular sequences. A nearly Gorenstein version of the Tachikawa conjecture is posed, and an affirmative answer given for type 2 rings. We also introduce the class of weakly almost Gorenstein rings using the canonical module, and …
We study the Gorenstein weak global dimension of associative rings and its relation to the Gorenstein global dimension. In particular, we prove the conjecture that the Gorenstein weak global dimension is a left-right symmetric invariant -- just like the (absolute) weak global dimension.
Given positive integers e and s we consider Gorenstein Artinian local rings R of embedding dimension e whose maximal ideal $\mathfrak{m}$ satisfies $\mathfrak{m}^s\ne 0=\mathfrak{m}^{s+1}$. We say that R is a compressed Gorenstein local ring when it has maximal length among such rings. It is known that generic Gorenstein Artinian algebras are compressed. If $s\ne 3$, we prove that the Poincare series of all finitely generated modules over a compressed Gorenstein local ring are rational, sharing a common denominator. A formula for the denominator is given. When s is even this formula depends on…
Given a homomorphism of commutative noetherian rings R --> S and an S-module N, it is proved that the Gorenstein flat dimension of N over R, when finite, may be computed locally over S. When, in addition, the homomorphism is local and N is finitely generated over S, the Gorenstein flat dimension equals sup{m | Tor^R_m(E,N) \noteq 0} where E is the injective hull of the residue field of R. This result is analogous to a theorem of André on flat dimension.
We deal with the Weak Lefschetz property (WLP) for Artinian standard graded Gorenstein algebras of codimension $3.$ We prove that many Gorenstein sequences force the WLP for such algebras. Moreover for every Gorenstein sequence $H$ of codimension 3 we found several Gorenstein Betti sequences compatible with $H$ which again force the WLP. Finally we show that for every Gorenstein Betti sequence the general Artinian standard graded Gorenstein algebra with such Betti sequence has the WLP.
In this paper, we extend the well-known Hilbert's syzygy theorem to the Gorenstein homological dimensions of rings. Also, we study the Gorenstein homological dimensions of direct product of rings, which gives examples of non-Noetherian rings of finite Gorenstein dimensions and infinite classical weak dimension.
In this paper, we extend the well-known Hilbert's syzygy theorem to the Gorenstein homological dimensions of rings. Also, we study the Gorenstein homological dimensions of direct products of rings. Our results generate examples of non-Noetherian rings of finite Gorenstein dimensions and infinite classical weak dimension.
In this paper, we investigate the weak Gorenstein global dimensions. We are mainly interested in studying the problem when the left and right weak Gorenstein global dimensions coincide. We first show, for GF-closed rings, that the left and right weak Gorenstein global dimensions are equal when they are finite. Then, we prove that the same equality holds for any two-sided coherent ring. We conclude the paper with some examples and a brief discussion of the scope and limits of our results.
Let $C$ be a semidualizing module. We first investigate the properties of finitely generated $G_C$-projective modules. Then, relative to $C$, we introduce and study the rings of Gorenstein (weak) global dimensions at most 1, which we call $C$-Gorenstein (semi)hereditary rings, and prove that every $C$-Gorenstein hereditary ring is both coherent and $C$-Gorenstein semihereditary.
A ring $R$ is called left GF-closed, if the class of all Gorenstein flat left $R$-modules is closed under extensions. The class of left GF-closed rings includes strictly the one of right coherent rings and the one of rings of finite weak dimension. In this paper, we investigate the Gorenstein flat dimension over left GF-closed rings. Namely, we generalize the fact that the class of all Gorenstein flat left modules is projectively resolving over right coherent rings to left GF-closed rings. Also, we generalize the characterization of Gorenstein flat left modules (then of Gorenstein flat dimensi…
We expand on two existing characterizations of rings of Gorenstein (weak) global dimension zero and give two new characterizations of rings of finite Gorenstein (weak) global dimension. We also include the answer to a question of Y.~Xiang on Gorenstein weak global dimension of group rings.
The Nakayama conjecture is one of the most important conjectures in ring theory. The Auslander-Reiten conjecture is closely related to it. The purpose of this note is to show that if the Auslander-Reiten conjecture holds in codimension one for a commutative Gorenstein ring $R$, then it holds for $R$.
Assume sigma is a face of a Gorenstein* simplicial complex D. We investigate the question of whether the Weak Lefschetz Property of the Stanley-Reisner ring k[D] (over an infinite field k) is equivalent to the same property of the Stanley-Reisner ring k[D_sigma] of the stellar subdivision D_sigma. We prove that this is the case if the dimension of sigma is big compared to the codimension.
It is proved that if one of the finite modules M and N, over a local ring R, has reducible complexity and has finite Gorenstein dimension then the depth formula holds, provided TorR_i(M,N) = 0 for i>>0. We also study the vanishing of cohomology of a module of finite complete intersection dimension.
In these expository notes I discuss several concepts and results in the theory of modules over commutative rings, revolving around the Gorenstein dimension of modules. Some of the related notions are the Auslander dual, k-torsionless modules, and k-th syzygies. Essentially everything in these notes can be found, in one form or another, in the memoir "Stable module theory" by M. Auslander and M. Bridger (Mem. A.M.S., no. 94, 1969). The only difference is in presentation. In the Auslander-Bridger memoir many of the results are proved in the most general setting, e.g. over possibly non-commutativ…
An SI-sequence is a finite sequence of positive integers which is symmetric, unimodal and satisfies a certain growth condition. These are known to correspond precisely to the possible Hilbert functions of Artinian Gorenstein algebras with the Weak Lefschetz Property, a property shared by most Artinian Gorenstein algebras. Starting with an arbitrary SI-sequence, we construct a reduced, arithmetically Gorenstein configuration $G$ of linear varieties of arbitrary dimension whose Artinian reduction has the given SI-sequence as Hilbert function and has the Weak Lefschetz Property. Furthermore, we s…
We study the problem of whether an arbitrary codimension three graded artinian Gorenstein algebra has the Weak Lefschetz Property. We reduce this problem to checking whether it holds for all compressed Gorenstein algebras of odd socle degree. In the first open case, namely Hilbert function (1,3,6,6,3,1), we give a complete answer in every characteristic by translating the problem to one of studying geometric aspects of certain morphisms from $\mathbb P^2$ to $\mathbb P^3$, and Hesse configurations in $\mathbb P^2$.
Suppose that $R$ is a ring essentially of finite type over a perfect field of characteristic $p > 0$ and that $a \subseteq R$ is an ideal. We prove that the set of $F$-jumping numbers of $τ_b(R; a^t)$ has no limit points under the assumption that $R$ is normal and $Q$-Gorenstein -- we do \emph{not} assume that the $Q$-Gorenstein index is not divisible by $p$. Furthermore, we also show that the $F$-jumping numbers of $τ_b(R; Δ, a^t)$ are discrete under the more general assumption that $K_R + Δ$ is $\bR$-Cartier.
It has been conjectured that {\it all} graded Artinian Gorenstein algebras of codimension three have the weak Lefschetz property over a field of characteristic zero. In this paper, we study the weak Lefschetz property of associated graded algebras $A$ of the Apéry set of $M$-pure symmetric numerical semigroups generated by four natural numbers. In 2010, Bryant proved that these algebras are graded Artinian Gorenstein algebras of codimension three. In a recent article, Guerrieri showed that if $A$ is not a complete intersection, then $A$ is of form $A=R/I$ with $R=K[x,y,z]$ and \begin{align*} I…
In this note we establish a (non-trivial) lower bound on the degree two entry $h_2$ of a Gorenstein $h$-vector of any given socle degree $e$ and any codimension $r$. In particular, when $e=4$, that is for Gorenstein $h$-vectors of the form $h=(1,r,h_2,r,1)$, our lower bound allows us to prove a conjecture of Stanley on the order of magnitude of the minimum value, say $f(r)$, that $h_2$ may assume. In fact, we show that $$\lim_{r\to \infty} {f(r)\over r^{2/3}}= 6^{2/3}.$$ In general, we wonder whether our lower bound is sharp for all integers $e\geq 4$ and $r\geq 2$.
Let $M$ denote a finitely generated module over a Noetherian ring $R$. For an ideal $I \subset R$ there is a study of the endomorphisms of the local cohomology module $H^g_I(M), g = \operatorname{grade} (I,M),$ and related results. Another subject is the study of left derived functors of the $I$-adic completion $Λ^I_i(H^g_I(M))$, motivated by a characterization of Gorenstein rings given in the book by Simon and the author. This provides another Cohen-Macaulay criterion. The results are illustrated by several examples. There is also an extension to the case of homomorphisms of two different loc…
In this note, we characterize the Hilbert regularity of the Stanley-Reisner ring $K[\bigtriangleup]$ in terms of the $f$-vector and the $h$-vector of a simplicial complex $\bigtriangleup$. We also compute the Hilbert regularity of a Gorenstein algebra.
Let $R$ be a Cohen--Macaulay normal domain with a canonical module $ω_R$. It is proved that if $R$ admits a noncommutative crepant resolution (NCCR), then necessarily it is $\mathbb{Q}$-Gorenstein. Writing $S$ for a Zariski local canonical cover of $R$, then a tight relationship between the existence of noncommutative (crepant) resolutions on $R$ and $S$ is given. A weaker notion of Gorenstein modification is developed, and a similar tight relationship is given. There are three applications: non-Gorenstein quotient singularities by connected reductive groups cannot admit an NCCR, the centre of…
A Gorenstein A-algebra R of codimension 2 is a perfect finite A-algebra such that R=Ext^2(R,A) holds as R-modules, A being a Cohen-Macaulay local ring with dim(A)-dim_A(R)=2. I prove a structure theorem for these algebras improving on an old theorem of M. Grassi. Special attention is paid to the question how the ring structure of R is encoded in its Hilbert resolution. It is shown that R is automatically a ring once one imposes a weak depth condition on a determinantal ideal derived from a presentation matrix of R over A. The interplay of Gorenstein algebras and Koszul modules as introduced by…
A connected sum construction for local rings was introduced in a paper by H. Ananthnarayan, L. Avramov, and W.F. Moore. In the graded Artinian Gorenstein case, this can be viewed as an algebraic analogue of the topological construction of the same name. We give two alternative description of this algebraic connected sum: the first uses algebraic analogues of Thom classes of vector bundles and Gysin homomorphisms, the second is in terms of Macaulay dual generators. We also investigate the extent to which the connected sum construction preserves the weak or strong Lefschetz property, thus provid…
