This paper shows that the Seifert volume of each closed non-trivial graph manifold is virtually positive.
As a consequence, for each closed orientable prime 3-manifold $N$, the set of mapping degrees $cD(M,N)$ is finite for any 3-manifold $M$, unless $N$ is finitely covered by either a torus bundle, or a trivial circle bundle, or the 3-sphere.
In this paper, it is shown that for any closed orientable $3$-manifold with positive simplicial volume, the growth of the Seifert volume of its finite covers is faster than the linear rate. In particular, each closed orientable $3$-manifold with positive simplicial volume has virtually positive Seifert volume. The result reveals certain fundamental difference between the representation volume of the hyperbolic type and the Seifert type. The proof is based on developments and reactions of recent results on virtual domination and on virtual representation volumes of $3$-manifolds.
The infimal Heegaard gradient of a compact 3-manifold was defined and studied by Marc Lackenby in an approach toward the well-known virtually Haken conjecture. As instructive examples, we consider Seifert fibered 3-manifolds, and show that a Seifert fibered 3-manifold has zero infimal Heegaard gradient if and only if it virtually fibers over the circle or over a surface other than the 2-sphere. For a collection of finite coverings of a Seifert fibered 3-manifold, a necessary and sufficient condition to have zero infimal Heegaard gradient is also given.
In this paper, we mainly discuss the representations of closed graph manifolds to the Seifert motion group. Then we prove that there exist graph manifolds virtually having no faithful representations to the Seifert motion group.
The paper introduces the spirality character of the almost fiber part for a closed essentially immersed subsurface of a closed orientable aspherical 3-manifold, which generalizes an invariant due to Rubinstein and Wang. The subsurface is virtually embedded if and only if the almost fiber part is aspiral, and in this case, the subsurface is virtually a leaf of a taut foliation. Besides other consequences, examples are exhibited that non-geometric 3-manifolds with no Seifert fibered pieces may contain essentially immersed but not virtually embedded closed subsurfaces.
For any oriented Seifert manifold X and compact connected Lie group G with finite center, we relate the Reidemeister density of the moduli space of representations of the fundamental group of X into G to the Liouville measure of some moduli spaces of representations of surface groups into G.
This paper proves that every oriented non-disk Seifert surface $F$ for a knot $K$ in $S^3$ is smoothly concordant to a Seifert surface $F^{\prime}$ for a hyperbolic knot $K^{\prime}$ of arbitrarily large volume. This gives a new and simpler proof of the result of Friedl and of Kawauchi that every knot is $S$-equivalent to a hyperbolic knot of arbitrarily large volume. The construction also gives a new and simpler proof of the result of Silver and Whitten and of Kawauchi that for every knot $K$ there is a hyperbolic knot $K^{\prime}$ of arbitrarily large volume and a map of pairs $f:(S^3,K^{\pr…
A Seifert surface F for a knot K is free if the complement of F is a handlebody (i.e., has free fundamental group). The free genus of K is the minimum genus among all free Seifert surfaces for K. In this paper we show that there exist families of hyperbolic knots with arbitrarily large volume, which each have free genus one. This implies that there are knots with free genus one but arbitrarily large canonical genus, and that there exist knots admitting incompressible free Seifert surfaces which cannot be built by applying Seifert's algorithm to a projection of the knot.
Let $\barγ$ be a link in a Seifert fibered space $M$ over a hyperbolic $2$-orbifolds $\mathcal O$ that projects injectively to a filling multicurve of closed geodesics $γ$ in $\mathcal O.$ We prove that the complement $M_{\barγ}$ of $\barγ$ in $M$ admits a hyperbolic structure of finite volume and give combinatorial bounds of its volume.
A Seifert surface for a knot K is called canonical if it can be built by applying Seifert's algorithm to some projection of K. The canonical genus of K is the smallest genus of a surface so obtained. In this paper we show that there is a bound on the volume of a hyperbolic knot which admits a canonical surface of genus g. The bound can, in fact, be chosen to be linear in g.
We prove that an irreducible 3-manifold whose fundamental group satisfies a certain group-theoretic property called RFRS is virtually fibered. As a corollary, we show that 3-dimensional reflection orbifolds and arithmetic hyperbolic orbifolds defined by a quadratic form virtually fiber. These include the Seifert Weber dodecahedral space and the Bianchi orbifolds. Moreover, we show that a taut sutured compression body has a finite-sheeted cover with a depth one taut-oriented foliation.
We study the set ${\rm vol}\left(M,G\right)$ of volumes of all representations $ρ\coπ_1M\to G$, where $M$ is a closed oriented $3$-manifold and $G$ is either ${\rm Iso}_+{\Hi}^3$ or ${\rm Iso}_e\t{\rm SL_2(\R)}$. By various methods, including relations between the volume of representations and the Chern--Simons invariants of flat connections, and recent results of surfaces in 3-manifolds, we prove that any 3-manifold $M$ with positive Gromov simplicial volume has a finite cover $\t M$ with ${\rm vol}(\t M,{\rm Iso}_+{\Hi}^3)\ne \{0\}$, and that any non-geometric 3-manifold $M$ containing at le…
This article has two purposes. In \cite{R3} (math.KT/0405211) we showed that the FIC (Fibered Isomorphism Conjecture for pseudoisotopy functor) for a particular class of 3-manifolds (we denoted this class by \cal C) is the key to prove the FIC for 3-manifold groups in general. And we proved the FIC for the fundamental groups of members of a subclass of \cal C. This result was obtained by showing that the double of any member of this subclass is either Seifert fibered or supports a nonpositively curved metric. In this article we prove that for any M in {\cal C} there is a closed 3-manifold P su…
We give a new proof of Witten asymptotic conjecture for Seifert manifolds with non vanishing Euler class and one exceptional fiber. Our method is based on semiclassical analysis on a two dimensional phase space torus. We prove that the Witten-Reshetikhin-Turaev invariant of a Seifert manifold is the scalar product of two Lagrangian states, and we estimate this scalar product in the large level limit. The leading order terms of the expansion are naturally given in terms of character varieties, the Chern-Simons invariants and some symplectic volumes. For the analytic part, we establish some sing…
We give some applications of the Chern Simons gauge theory to the study of the set ${\rm vol}(N,G)$ of volumes of all representations $ρ\coπ_1N\to G$, where $N$ is a closed oriented three-manifold and $G$ is either ${\rm Iso}_e\t{\rm SL_2(\R)}$, the isometry group of the Seifert geometry, or ${\rm Iso}_+{\Hi}^3$, the orientation preserving isometry group of the hyperbolic 3-space. We focus on three natural questions: (1) How to find non-zero values in ${\rm vol}(N, G)$? or weakly how to find non-zero elements in ${\rm vol}(\t N, G)$ for some finite cover $\t N$ of $N$? (2) Do these volumes sat…
It is shown that every non-compact hyperbolic manifold of finite volume has a finite cover admitting a geodesic ideal triangulation. Also, every hyperbolic manifold of finite volume with non-empty, totally geodesic boundary has a finite regular cover which has a geodesic partially truncated triangulation. The proofs use an extension of a result due to Long and Niblo concerning the separability of peripheral subgroups.
This article studies the abelian analytic torsion on a closed, oriented, Sasakian three-manifold and identifies this quantity as a specific multiple of the natural unit symplectic volume form on the moduli space of flat abelian connections. This identification computes the analytic torsion explicitly in terms of Seifert data.
Let $Γ$ be a connected, triangle-free, planar graph with at least five vertices that has no separating vertices or edges. If the graph $Γ$ is $\mathcal{CFS}$, we prove that the right-angled Coxeter group $G_Γ$ is virtually a Seifert manifold group or virtually a graph manifold group and we give a complete quasi-isometry classification of these such groups. Otherwise, we prove that $G_Γ$ is hyperbolic relative to a collection of $\mathcal{CFS}$ right-angled Coxeter subgroups of $G_Γ$. Consequently, the divergence of $G_Γ$ is linear, or quadratic, or exponential. We also generalize right-angled …
We obtain restrictions on the topology of a closed connected manifold B that bounds a (possibly noncompact) manifold whose interior V admits a complete Riemannian metric of nonpositive sectional curvature. If G denotes the fundamental group of B, then a sample result is that B must be aspherical and incompressible if one of the following is true: (1) V has finite volume and G is virtually nilpotent, (2) G is virtually nilpotent and has no proper torsion-free quotients, (3) G is isomorphic to a uniform, irreducible lattice of real rank > 1.
Integral foliated simplicial volume is a version of simplicial volume combining the rigidity of integral coefficients with the flexibility of measure spaces. In this article, using the language of measure equivalence of groups we prove a proportionality principle for integral foliated simplicial volume for aspherical manifolds and give refined upper bounds of integral foliated simplicial volume in terms of stable integral simplicial volume. This allows us to compute the integral foliated simplicial volume of hyperbolic 3-manifolds. This is complemented by the calculation of the integral foliat…
Let $S$ be a surface of negative Euler characteristic and consider a finite filling collection $Γ$ of closed curves on $S$ in minimal position. An observation of Foulon and Hasselblatt shows that $PT(S) \setminus \hatΓ$ is a finite-volume hyperbolic 3-manifold, where $PT(S)$ is the projectivized tangent bundle and $\hatΓ$ is the set of tangent lines to $Γ$. In particular, $vol(PT(S) \setminus \hatΓ)$ is a mapping class group invariant of the collection $Γ$. When $Γ$ is a filling pair of simple closed curves, we show that this volume is coarsely comparable to Weil-Petersson distance between str…
Let M be a complete hyperbolic 3-manifold of finite volume that admits a decomposition into right-angled ideal polyhedra. We show that M has a deformation retraction that is a virtually special square complex, in the sense of Haglund and Wise and deduce that such manifolds are virtually fibered. We generalise a theorem of Haglund and Wise to the relatively hyperbolic setting and deduce that the fundamental group of M is LERF and that the geometrically finite subgroups of the fundamental group are virtual retracts. Examples of 3-manifolds admitting such a decomposition include augmented link co…
Let the complexity of a closed manifold M be the minimal number of simplices in a triangulation of M. Such a quantity is clearly submultiplicative with respect to finite coverings, and by taking the infimum on all finite coverings of M normalized by the covering degree we can promote it to a multiplicative invariant, a characteristic number already considered by Milnor and Thurston, which call the "stable complexity" of M. We study here the relation between the stable complexity of M and Gromov's simplicial volume ||M||. It is immediate to show that ||M|| is smaller or equal than the stable co…
We examine three key conjectures in 3-manifold theory: the virtually Haken conjecture, the positive virtual b_1 conjecture and the virtually fibred conjecture. We explore the interaction of these conjectures with the following seemingly unrelated areas: eigenvalues of the Laplacian, and Heegaard splittings. We first give a necessary and sufficient condition, in terms of spectral geometry, for a finitely presented group to have a finite index subgroup with infinite abelianisation. For negatively curved 3-manifolds, we show that this is equivalent to a statement about generalised Heegaard splitt…
Let M be a closed, orientable, irreducible, non-simply connected 3-manifold. We prove that if M admits a sequence of Riemannian metrics whose sectional curvature is locally controlled and whose thick part becomes asymptotically hyperbolic and has a sufficiently small volume, then M is Seifert fibred or contains an incompressible torus. This result gives an alternative approach for the last step in Perelman's proof of the Geometrisation Conjecture for aspherical 3-manifolds.
We classify all the non-hyperbolic Dehn fillings of the complement of the chain-link with 3 components, conjectured to be the smallest hyperbolic 3-manifold with 3 cusps. We deduce the classification of all non-hyperbolic Dehn fillings of infinitely many 1-cusped and 2-cusped hyperbolic manifolds, including most of those with smallest known volume. Among other consequences of this classification, we mention the following: - for every integer n we can prove that there are infinitely many hyperbolic knots in the 3-sphere having exceptional surgeries n, n+1, n+2, n+3, with n+1, n+2 giving small S…
A natural problem in the theory of 3-manifolds is the question of whether two 3-manifolds are homeomorphic or not. The aim of this paper is to study this problem for the class of closed Haken manifolds using degree one maps. To this purpose we introduce an invariant $ τ(N)=({\rm Vol}(N),\|N\|)$ where $\|N\|$ denotes the Gromov simplicial volume of $N$ and ${\rm Vol}(N)$ is a 2-dimensional simplicial volume which measures the volume of the base 2-orbifolds of the Seifert pieces of $N$. After studying the behavior of $τ(N)$ under nonzero degree maps action, we prove that if $M$ and $N$ are close…
For any closed oriented 3-manifold $M$ with positive simplicial volume and any closed oriented 3-manifold $N$, we prove that there exists a finite cover $M'$ of $M$ that admits a degree-1 map $f:M'\to M$, i.e. M virtually 1-dominates N. This result generalizes previous virtual domination results with closed hyperbolic domain to more general domains.
Let $ 1 \rightarrow N \rightarrow G \rightarrow Q \rightarrow 1$ be an exact sequence of finitely presented groups where Q is infinite and not virtually cyclic, and is the fundamental group of some closed 3-manifold. If G is Kaehler, we show that Q is either the 3-dimensional Heisenberg group or the fundamental group of the Cartesian product of a closed oriented surface of positive genus and the circle. As a corollary, we obtain a new proof of a theorem of Dimca and Suciu by taking N to be the trivial group, If G is the fundamental group of a compact complex surface, we show that Q must be the…
Froyshov invariants are numerical invariants of rational homology three-spheres derived from gradings in monopole Floer homology. In the past few years, they have been employed to solve a wide range of problems in three and four-dimensional topology. In this paper, we look at connections with hyperbolic geometry for the class of minimal $L$-spaces. In particular, we study relations between Froyshov invariants and closed geodesics using ideas from analytic number theory. We discuss two main applications of our approach. First, we derive effective upper bounds for the Froyshov invariants of mini…
This work is devoted to the study of deformations of hyperbolic cone structures under the assumption that the lengths of the singularity remain uniformly bounded over the deformation. Given a sequence (M_{i},p_{i}) of pointed hyperbolic cone-manifolds with topological type (M,Σ), where M is a closed, orientable and irreducible 3-manifold and Σ an embedded link in M. Assuming that the lengths of the singularity remain uniformly bounded, we prove that either the sequence M_{i} collapses and M is Seifert fibered or a Sol manifold, or the sequence M_{i} does not collapse and in this case a subsequ…
We prove that any mapping torus of a closed 3-manifold has zero simplicial volume. When the fiber is a prime 3-manifold, classification results can be applied to show vanishing of the simplicial volume, however the case of reducible fibers is by far more subtle. We thus analyse the possible self-homeomorphisms of reducible 3-manifolds, and use this analysis to produce an explicit representative of the fundamental class of the corresponding mapping tori. To this end, we introduce a new technique for understanding self-homeomorphisms of connected sums in arbitrary dimensions on the level of clas…
We describe an algorithm which has enabled us to give a complete list, without repetitions, of all closed oriented irreducible 3-manifolds of complexity up to 9. More interestingly, we have actually been able to give a "name" to each such manifold, by recognizing its canonical decomposition into Seifert fibred spaces and hyperbolic manifolds. The algorithm relies on the extension of Matveev's theory of complexity to the case of manifolds bounded by suitably marked tori, and on the notion of assembling of two such manifolds. We show that every manifold is an assembling of manifolds which cannot…
